It all started for me with my 3dTotal artbook. 3dTotal is a small publisher in the UK, and they mainly focus on collections of artists' work. They use Kickstarter to fund each book, and my agent (the amazing Seth Fishman at Gernert) discovered me through the Kickstarter for my artbook Windows to Worlds!

He asked if I had any interest in working on graphic novels or picture books, and I had already been thinking about picture books! He found me my first picture book project with Penguin Workshop, Mother of Sharks, written by the awesome Melissa Cristina Márquez, which came out last year!

While I was working on Mother of Sharks, I was also talking with him about developing The Bakery Dragon, based of course on this painting, which was (and is) one of my proudest artistic moments.

For a little background on the painting, I painted it right after a really challenging couple of months medically - I was dealing with medical complications from my chronic illness for about 6 months, and I wasn't able to finish a single painting the whole time, I was just too exhausted from hospital visits and being in pain. That painting was the first piece I was able to actually complete (both emotionally and literally) in about half a year. So it always held a really special place in my heart, and I really wanted to keep living in that little world. I think there's something in it that is very special to me, about being outside in the cold, seeing warmth and love through a glass barrier, and wanting desperately to reach it.

With Seth's guidance, over a couple months, I developed a pitch for it. The script developed slowly alongside the designs for characters, locations, etc.

I thought I had already read a lot of picture books, I've always loved them, but I read hundreds and hundreds during this process. There is something uniquely fun and challenging about telling a complete narrative in 48 pages (which is already a long picture book, many are 32!) My book also pulls some elements from comics, such as speech bubbles, which I found to be incredible assets for humor and character development.

My pitch included designs, some early example spreads, and a rough script with story beats and jokes! My agent took it out into the world, and the publisher we ended up going forward with was Knopf, an imprint of Penguin Random House! I absolutely love the Knopf team and the beautiful books they put out! My editor, Katherine Harrison, really understood what I wanted to accomplish and has been so incredibly helpful in her guidance!

And from there... through rewrites, dialog adjustments, and lots and lots of drawings, it became a book! I'm happy to answer questions about the process! I'll leave you guys with a little preview from the interior of the book! (And of course you can pre-order it here, gotta learn the author skill of always including that link haha!)

I’m gonna go in a different direction for part four so I figured I’d wrap up the Heart Pirates portion of it (they’ll be back)

So! Pre-timeskip only has Rosie added onto Law’s entourage during Sabaody. Not much of a difference. I’ve got Cora and Del staying behind on the Tang bc 1. Still pretending Cora is dead (hence the dyed hair) 2. Delly’s half fishman.

After Marineford, Cora splits up from the crew since, from this point onwards, their I Hate Doflamingo plan is starting. He decides to travel the grand line (wearing what I’ve designed for him in part one) creating his own lil information network. He’s in constant contact with his kids too.

I’ve got Del’s usual fit here: a swimsuit underneath some clothes that I think are more femme leaning and in line w Law’s style of dress. Delly looks up to him a lot here. They also cut the hoodie up themself. And high heeled boots. They intrinsically like dressing more femininely. Giolla just gave them bad fashion taste in canon ok?

In Dressrosa, I’ve plopped Delly with Nami and the others on the Sunny for the duration of it. Cue screaming match between Del and Giolla lol

Also wanted to show Del’s puffy hat at Punk Hazard.

And Shachi and Penguin without all the hats and glasses in the way. Until Oda says otherwise, Shachi is also a half human half fishman (archerfish type - yeah I looked up what fish can shoot water at people. There’s no other explanation that makes sense to me for Shachi inflating and becoming a water gun.)

─ They don't always let you in with spicy condiments to season your dishes because Ikkaku almost made everyone spit fire once by making a mistake and making all portions of food extra spicy.

─ Jean Bart your only real one, he will be the only one who accompanies you and has endurance competitions with you because the others don't dare, Shachi and Penguin tried it once but they ended up with their eyes and lips as if they had been injected with botox very badly.

─ And speaking of these two devils… they will encourage you to try super spicy things, like if they see a food stand on a random island that claims to sell the spiciest hot dogs and they pay for you to eat to see how spicy they are.

─ Probably the crew that best adapts to your taste for spicy, not because they especially like it too, but because they don't give a shit what you put in the kitchen, as long as it's edible.

─ This doesn't mean that everyone will eat that spicy food that you helped prepare, but they will be more tolerable, the positive side is that if they don't like the dish you prepare you will have more portions of food for yourself.

─ Heat your favorite boy, you are the perfect couple for meals, he can handle all kinds of spice perfectly, this boy breathes fire and is a great competitor for you.

─ Unlike Wire, he likes spicy food, but he is not so good at tolerating it, he will accompany you two when you go to eat in case the situation gets complicated (you love spicy food, but you are not made of steel, sometimes you need an emergency exit)

─ Killer at this point thinks that your taste buds don't exist due to the amount of spicy food you eat daily, seriously, he cares about your health, you need to eat other types of things or your taste will become obsolete.

─ On the other side is Kid, who encourages you to try all kinds of spicy garbage he finds out there, so don't be surprised if he ever asks you to open your mouth so he can spray you with pepper spray, this isn't the worst idea that he has had.

Under the sea (Penguin x mermaid!reader)

Summary: You are afraid of water, at least everyone thinks so. So what happens if you jump right in to save your crewmates?

A/N: Mermaid! reader x Heart Pirates is a must have tbh and I am still confused why I don’t see/ read it anywhere? So I decided to write one. I hope you enjoy. Not sure if I should write a second part.

The heat of the sun was kinda annoying. Everyone was relaxing on the beach you docked on a while ago. You sat on top of the submarine. You would love to swim and cool yourself down. But you were afraid. No one knew that you were a mermaid. Well no one except for Law and Bepo. As soon as you joined the heart pirates, your captain and doctor, Trafalgar Law, was checking your health in general. You thought your secret would be safe, but his Room and Scan Ability revealed it way too fast. “Why do I detect scales and gills? Are you a fishman by any chance?” Law looked at you with a surprised look in his eyes. You couldn’t help but fumbling with your fingers. “Some people might say yes, I would say…ehh .. no?” Law looked at you, now annoyed and sighed. “Look, this could only work out if you are honest with me and the crew. “

You looked at the ground, gulping and tried to hold back the tears. “I am a mermaid.”

“You are what? You have legs…”

Your captain seemed pretty confused. “Well it’s kinda complicated I guess. As long as I touch no water, my tail will transform into legs. My hair is longer when I’m in my mermaid form as well. I have no idea how this happened. There was a spell or a curse or something like that a few centuries ago.”

You slowly moved your head so you could look at Law. “I see. Anything else I need to know?” You silently shook your head. “Ok. If you wanna keep it a secret go ahead. But remember. You need to trust us and we need to trust you.”

Bepo only noticed your secret because he always said “you smell like fish” and you were afraid he might eat you when he was hungry. He would never do it, you know it by now but you were really cautious at the beginning.

Yesterday Penguin and Shachi were close to discovering your secret as well. You loved to sing and you always did when you were alone. As you had night watch you were singing softly and not even loud enough to hear you. What you did not know was the fact that Penguin and Shachi were earlier there for their shift and heard your voice. “Wow Y/N, you have a pretty voice.” Shachi suddenly said with a grin on his face. You shrieked and jumped away. “H-How long are you standing there?” You stuttered and couldn’t help but feel embarrassed.

“Not too long. Your voice was like a magic spell luring us into our shift earlier. Thehe. So feel free to head to bed now.” Shachi still grinned and Penguin was smiling softly at you. You were sure that they were joking on the magic part of it. But you knew for sure that you really lured them towards you. You were a mermaid, your singing voice was for this purpose. Luring people towards you, towards death like a siren. You jumped up and headed towards your bed with a quick wave and a high pitched “see you tomorrow”.

With a heavy sigh you closed your eyes and leaned on the railing. “Hey there. Is everything alright?” You heard a voice and looked up. There he was, your best friend and the most handsome man you’ve ever laid eyes on. “P-Penguin. H-Hey. Yeah I’m fine…what about you?”

You could see his smile and your heart skipped a beat. It was impossible to fall in love with someone so fast, right? “We wanted to swim for a bit. Maybe you would like to join us instead of sitting here alone. You could join us at the beach as well.” Penguin held a hand towards you. You were nervous and were close to accepting it. Your fingertips were brushing against his and soon enough you backed away. “I’m sorry. I can’t.” Penguin’s smile faded and his hand found its way towards his hip. “Well if you say so.” You thought that he would leave you and join the others but instead Penguin sat down beside you. “Are you perhaps afraid of the sea or water in general?”

You lightly shook your head. “I-I’m not a big fan of sea water…that’s all.”

“Are you a devil fruit user?” - “Nope. I’m not that special like captain.”

His smile returns. “You are special without eating a devil fruit, you know?”

You sat there in silence. As your shoulders were touching you couldn’t help but feel giddy and even warmer. “Oh..you can’t swim, right? I can teach you if you want. I won’t let go of you no matter what happens. You can trust me.”

Penguin was such a cutie and you couldn’t help but giggle. “I already trust you, Pen. But maybe not today ok?” //Or maybe ever// you thought.

“RETREAT! There is a sea king.” You could hear someone’s shouting. It sounded like Shachi. Soon enough everyone was on the Polar Tang and you were ready to go underwater.

This sea king was a big octopus, and their arms tried to hit the submarine.

“Captain, it's arm got us. We can’t go underwater.” Hakugan yelled and Law gritted his teeth. “Shachi, Penguin. Attack it under water. I will try to help you from above.”

“Aye, captain” with that Shachi and Penguin jumped inside the sea, attacking the big octopus arm, while Law tried to fight it from the top of the Polar Tang.

Soon enough the octopus let go and Law went inside. You could see on the screen that Shachi returned safely but Penguin on the other hand was far behind.

The octopus grabbed his leg. Without thinking twice you ran out of the room towards the deck of the submarine. You could only hear Law and Bepo yelling at you.

//I have to protect him no matter what.//

You took a deep breath and jumped into the sea. You could feel that your legs transformed into your beautiful (f/c) tail and your hair grew longer. As fast as you can you swim towards the octopus and Penguin. “Let him go. He isn’t your food.”

You talked to the octopus and it seems that he was talking to you as well.

Penguin couldn’t believe his eyes. Were you in the water to save him? He thought you couldn’t swim but maybe it’s just a delusion. You were in front of him, talking with this sea king and you had a …tail?

“Please let him go. He belongs to me.” You begged the giant in front of you and hummed softly. It worked and it let go of Penguin’s leg. Fast enough you were there to support him and swam fast enough towards the Polar Tang. Soon enough you felt a blue presence around you and as you blinked you were on deck of the Polar Tang. Penguin’s head was resting on your lap. Law must’ve used his ability to get you out of the water fast enough.

You could feel his hands on your shoulder. “You did a good job back there, but you shouldn’t do anything out of my order.” Your captain patted your shoulder. “I guess the cat’s out of the bag for now.”

Everyone was soon gathering around you, except for Bepo and Hakugan, who tried to dock on a safer place now.

You weren’t sure if Penguin was awake or not, hard to see with his hat. Your tail transformed back into legs and your hair got a little shorter again. You couldn’t look at your crewmates, the atmosphere was so heavy it felt like you would suffocate.

So your eyes found a spot on the ground.

Shachi was the first who found his voice. “You are a mermaid?”

A light nod was all you could do. “Dude, why didn’t you tell us sooner? THAT IS SO COOL!”

He suddenly screamed and you looked up with a surprise look on your face.

“Oh my god. Penguin always said that you were the prettiest woman he ever laid eyes on, even prettier than mermaids. Of course you are so beautiful...you are a mermaid. “

The rest of your crew was laughing and smiling at it, while you heard a groan from below. Penguin was hiding under his hat even more. “Shut up, Shach.” Even so he hid himself you could see that he was blushing. “I guess that was a part you weren’t allowed to say out loud.”

Ikkaku said while punching Shachi lightly against his arm.

“Hey, that reminds me. I would love to race against you in the water. I bet I can even beat a mermaid. What ya say?” Shachi was pretty excited and you were too stunned to speak.

Penguin sat up, leaving your lap and was scratching his neck. “How about let her alone for a sec? Don’t overwhelm her.” He said while standing up and standing between you and the crew. “You might be right. Sorry for that y/n.” Ikkaku said and smiled at you. “Come on guys, let’s leave her alone for a bit. She has to process all of it first.”

Everyone left slowly except for Penguin and Shachi.

“Come on just one little race please.” Shachi was full of joy like a little kid who got a present. “You can do it another time. I guess it would be better for her to rest for a bit.” With a swift movement, he held your hand, bringing you back on your feet and guiding you towards the submarine.

“NOT FAIR DUDE!”

Penguin was guiding you towards your room, his hands were still holding yours. “I’m sorry for all of this. I guess that's something you wanted to tell us differently.”

His voice was calm and smoothing. “Thank you for saving me.”

“You are welcome. I didn’t even realize I jumped until I was right in front of you.”

You were now in your room and while he let go of your hand, you were sitting on your bed, Penguin was leaning on the doorframe.

“You don’t want to come in and sit with me? I must’ve scared you. I am sorry.”

He shook his head. “So you are mad at me for keeping it a secret?”

He chuckled and shook his head again. “Why should I be scared or mad? I don’t wanna cross a line to enter your room just like that.”

You tilted your head slightly. “You won’t.” It seems like Penguin was fighting himself on the inside, so you jumped up, took his hand and guided him towards the bed so you two could sit down. “I have no idea what I should say.” Penguin mumbled and you giggled. “Same. This is weird right now.”

You sat there in silence. He cleared his throat. “Maybe I should go…you need to rest.”

He was walking towards the door, but you quickly caught him and hugged his back. “Wait please. Before you go…Will it change our relationship? I don’t want our friendship to end or change just like that.”

“I have no idea. The only thing I know is I want to stay by your side as long as you let me.” You hugged him even more while you were leaning on his back. “I want the same.”

I'm currently thinking about a modern AU, where everyone is aged up about 9-10 years. And Kaya is a medical resident at the hospital Law works at, and they're friendly enough; and Kaya posts a flier on a bulletin board in one of the lounges, for a drag show, for one of her fiancé's best friends, she explains, the best friend being the headliner Chouquette. Law has no intention of going, initially, but he gets dragged into it by the surgical techs he always has to work with, Penguin and Shachi, and current surgery fellow, Bepo.

(I am thinking that Minks will stay Minks in this AU, bc I never see that in modern AUs. Same with Fishmen, etc. And Devil Fruit powers are instead powers that people are born with, but still have to figure out and "awaken.")

The group goes to the show, and the first couple acts are fine; but then it's finally time for Chouquette, and it's clear most of the crowd is here for her. She clearly has some pretty big fans up front, hooting and hollering as she sings and tells jokes.

When Chouquette is finished with her performance, Law sees Kaya at the bar with some other people, and she's talking to a really cute-looking boy who has his eyes all over Law. Law doesn't look away fast enough, and Kaya catches his eye and waves him over, first introducing him to the cute boy, Luffy, one of her friends through her fiancé, Usopp, who's also sitting nearby. Luffy quickly introduces Law to everyone else, including Zoro, who wraps his arm around Chouquette when she joins them at the bar; and Chouquette as "Sanji, who's a girl when she's Chouquette, but a boy a lot of the rest of the time" (genderfluid Sanji expressing this via drag...and in the bedroom sometimes 🤭💕).

Law gets unwittingly inducted into this friend group, and with Luffy very interested in him romantically.

I don't have much worked out for this AU, but Luffy is a preschool teacher. And zosan, namivivi, and usokaya are all engaged and lowkey in a competition to see who gets married first. And Brook is still a skeleman and Jinbei a fishman, and Chopper a reindeer. <3 Just a chaotic but fun found family modern fic with some more canon elements dashed in.

Misc. Heart Pirates Head Canons

So, when I'm bored out of my brain at work I've been thinking about my silly little beloveds the Heart Pirates! So here are some thoughts I've had about them and the crew structure! Crew Structure

Not a traditional first mate or incredibly strict hierarchy. I figure Law's authority issues extend to how he runs his crew!

There's four "departments" basically where one of the core-four preside over.

Bepo is in charge of all the helm stuff: navigation, steering, general operations (maintenance of equipment, engineering)

Penguin is in charge of personnel: finances, crew schedules, supplies (clothes, food, yatta yatta)

Shachi is on weapons: armory & procurement of, training the crew, and any like recon they do is planned by him

Law handles all the medical stuff: yearly exams, extensive charts/notes on the crew, any on-going treatments, and the supplies for this specifically goes through him

As captain, Law does oversee/supervise the others if he feels it relevant but after like 13 years he's pretty confident his favorite idiots can handle themselves!

The tang runs on two shifts so someone is always around to keep the sub running in case of emergencies, as such there's often multiple crew members capable of a job (ex chef, helmsman, engineering, nurses)

All the crew knows how to handle alarms, any gauge or sonar readouts, and just generally keep everyone from dying

Most of the crew knows basic triage and first aid

Any Big Decisions (TM) are normally talked over. The crew has a lot of say in most scenarios... One of the few times this was not the case was Law ordering them to Zou when he went to Punk Hazard.

It was an intentional choice on Law & the crew's part that none of them were spotted on jobs and don't have bounties. A lot of the crew's work, especially early on in Law's plotting against Doffy, was gathering information and other covert work. Them being well known or recognizable would've made it impossible for this to get done... It also would've made hiding from Doffy that much harder.

The crew splits proceeds evenly! 50% goes to the Tang's upkeep and supplies, 50% is split equally between everyone else.

Other than Bepo, everyone is older than Law

Penguin likes to sing

He also has collected rocks & shells from every island they've stopped at to make a living map of their travels.

I personally like to think of Shachi & Peng as some sort of fishman-human hybrid or perhaps a few generations removed from a fishman ancestor? Not super sure on how it works exactly, but I think they both look a lil odd and that's why they hide their eyes and such with hats.

Ikkaku handles Law 2nd best only to the Core 4. She knows when he needs space and when he needs to be pushed pretty well, and so they're pretty close.

Uni loves to sew; it's how he relaxes and passes time while they're underwater for long stretches of time. He is also the person who customizes most of Law's clothes with their jolly roger

Law did said customization before they recruited Uni and still helps, but Uni shoves him off often and says this is his therapy time alone

Clione takes to new members the best

He's also a great fighter and definitely yeeted Shachi into a wall one day; Shachi was delighted with this

He can drink most of the crew under the table

Hakugan is enby! And uses they/them pronouns

They also communicate with sign language, so the entire crew is relatively fluent

Hakugan is never lost; they have a 6th sense for where north is at all times

Much like their namesake, Hakugan is a volatile creature prone to violence

Shachi likes to keep up with psychology journals in his free time, so sometimes he & Law will have a little "medical journal book club" to hang out

Bepo is more an astronomy & weather guy... there was, however, a tragic mix-up with the news coo one time that resulted in Bepo getting an astrology magazine.

He likes to torment Law by teasing him with a well placed "That's so very libra of you, captain."

Law actually likes his coffee absurdly, disgustingly sweet

Penguin, however, takes his coffee black

Shachi & Bepo are 2 of 3 members of the Hearts without a caffeine addiction. Hakugan is the third

Penguin has given up trying to get Law on a schedule... It has never worked in their 13 years sailing together

Law had to implement a "no gambling on the tang" rule shortly after Hakugan joined; They were absolutely taking everyone else's money

Law does, however, actively encourage fleecing marines & rival pirate crews

The crew has picked up some Mink social behaviors! As such they're very physically affectionate... Yes, even Law. Though he tends to contain his affection to when they're in private or on the Polar Tang

It's super common to see the crew swap undershirts, jewelry, or other accessories

Bepo has a collection of his crewmates' shirts! Uni made it into a quilt for him since he can't exactly wear them properly

Everyone else has a "Bepo shirt"

Ikkaku tends to forget she's wearing hers while working on the Tang or to sleep then walks about. Whenever Bepo sees this he gets all flustered & teary-eyed

Law, similarly, wears his to sleep in regularly. He would rather be caught dead than wearing though. That's way too mushy for him.... but if there are days where he's still wearing it when Bepo comes to check on him in the morning, well, nobody has to know but them right?

Shachi & Penguin one time wore their Bepo shirts and attempted to force Bepo into their shirts which... obviously did not fit. Undetered they stitched the two together to the ultimate-bros-shirt. Bepo loves this shirt & wears it regularly.

Shachi & Penguin remake this shirt whenever the old one starts wearing down or falling apart every few years

(I took this one from a fic cuz I thought it was just so good) Between more junior members of the crew, it's a running gag that Law, Shachi, & Penguin are more "lesser mink" than "human" after 13 years with Bepo.

Law finds this absolutely hysterical, Bepo says they're all lesser minks

Law is, in fact, capable of a variety of animal noises such as growling, hissing, or purring. He normally makes this noises on accident when startled or particularly relaxed. He did not intentionally learn to make these noises. He was just an incredibly weird child and like many weird children before and after him, mimicked animals

Shachi & Penguin may or may not make fun of him for this

They may or may not have started the rumor that one of Law's parents was a mink; a rumor that Law has unintentionally perpetuated with his general wet cat behavior

Penguin's family were whalers! He uses a harpoon & is a fantastic fisher as a result

The above makes him Clione's favorite

Penguin often threatens Shachi with the harpoon so he may join his bretheren. Shachi shrieks back that orcas are not whales but dolphins. This is a near weekly song & dance.

Each of the "core four" have a way to show they accept a newbie into the crew!

Shachi carves a little wooden animal

Penguin embroiders their name inside their boiler suits

Bepo trades clothes with them

Law procures a custom mug decorated to their taste

Law normally gives his first, actually. Firstly, if he invited you to his crew he already likes you well enough. Two, he knows he can be an unapproachable dick and sees it as a bit of a peace offering. Three, to show the rest of the crew this new person is approved!

Shachi & Penguin gives theirs whenever they feel the new member has "earned" it. Normally 2nd/3rd in whatever order they deem.

Bepo basically always gives his last. He's a very anxious lil guy and doesn't want to disturb or weird anyone out.

Jean Bart is, ironically, the only crew member to not have concussed himself on the doorways in the Tang

Law had a few problem years after his sudden growth spurt, but it hasn't been a problem since he got used to being taller

After reuniting on Zou there was a crew wide cuddle puddle

Law is surprisingly tactile so long as it's on his terms. A head pat there, brushing his hands against a cheek or shoulder there... That kind of thing

This is generally the best indicator of how much he actually likes you

Law often stims using Bepo's fur or paws. Bepo loves this very much

There’s someone theorise that maybe his eyes or iris is like a Penguin while Shachi is maybe 1/4 or 1/3 fishman because of Shachi can suck a huge amount of water ( like water luffy) and shoots like a freaking water canon ball like 🤨🤨 UHHH he doesn’t have any devil fruit… he is a great swimmer … yeah that doesn’t explain why HE CAN SUCK IN HUGE AMOUNT OF WATER LIKE NOTHING?

Remember hybrid fishman-human exist in one piece like Dellinger & Chimney ( 1/4 mermaid , 3/4 human ) . Chimney able to rescue Luffy at Ennies Lobby whirpool easily and strong enough to pull Luffy up.

Synopsis: The Heart-Pirate crew were bent on getting their Captain to smile, no matter the cost. Swapping jokes after mealtime, you all continued to check over your shoulder to see if you managed to break the upturned curve into Law's face.

“Okay, okay, okay,” Penguin ushered his hands in a swatting motion downwards, his lips curling into a broad smile, “Me next, me next.”

All sat at the dining bench, food trays laying scattered and emptied at the edge of the lengthy metal table, the Heart-Pirates gathered on the pews and sat swapping ridiculous jokes all in the hopes of getting a rise out of their Captain: Trafalgar D Water-Law.

It was no easy feat: gaining one of Law's very rare smiles. The entirety of the crew were dedicated to making the dark-haired man crack a small smirk, but the sought after grin would take more than a simple joke to break it into his lips.

“What did the Fishman say when he swam into a wall?” Penguin’s snicker made it all the more difficult for him to conclude the joke, but he teetered it off by clutching at his collar.

“What?” you asked in return, eyebrow arched and grin beginning to crack over your lips.

“Dam,” he squawked, his outrageous and overemphatic laugh was more contagious than the hilarity his joke managed to produce. Penguin snuck a glance over to his captain, noticing his frown and subtle click of his tongue was all Penguin's joke managed to invoke.

Shachi clapped a hand over Penguin’s shoulder, leaning forward and smiling over at you and Ikkaku across the table.

“What's red and bad for your teeth?” he did his best to stifle his growing smile by sucking in his bottom lip. The room shrugged, Ikkaku’s shoulder bumping your own from your position beside her.

“Candy?” Bepo offered with a single, fuzzy, pointed digit, his voice contemplative and reflective.

“A brick,” Shachi concluded, Penguin’s squawked laughter only growing in volume, much to the delight of your crewmates around you. Shachi snuck a subtle glance to his captain, Law's back now turned to face away as he rose to his feet - returning his tray to the kitchen bench.

“Oof, he's tough to crack today,” Ikkaku whispered through gritted teeth into your shoulder, “You reckon we should up the anti?”

“I don't see why not,” you confessed, lip down turned and eyes wide, “What have you got?” She cleared her throat, prompting the crew to bring her their undivided attention.

“Two guys walk into a bar,” she states in a loud and booming voice, prompting Law to halt in his tracks as his ears pricked up.

Ikkaku smirked, crossing her arms and sucking in her bottom lip, her delivery concluded with, “The third guy ducks.”

Shachi and Penguin roared with their laughter, Bepo offering a polite chuckle as your giggle and shake of your head joined in with their chorus.

“Okay, that was bad,” you reached for her forearm and gave it a gentle squeeze, “But I am so glad you're actually participating this time.”

“Hey, you all involved Berry,” she clapped her hand over your own and braced herself against you, “Like I was gonna turn that offer down.” Law reached an inked finger over the counter, collecting a steel canister of water and returning to his space away from you all.

“What did the janitor say when he jumped out of the closet?” Bepo asked the crew, each member turning over to meet his beady, dark eyes with anticipation. Bepo held his paws beside his face, giving them a gentle shake as his brows upturned.

“Supplies!” he shrieked in glee. Shachi clapped his hand over Penguin's chest as Penguin threw his head back against Shachi’s shoulder: both laughs far more entertaining than the delivery of the Bepo’s joke. You snuck a glance at your captain, his cup raised to his lips and eyes remaining serious and unmoving.

“Fine,” you utter to yourself in a quiet whisper, cracking your neck within your palms and fingertips, “Have it your way.”

“Heart-Pirates,” you shot through the air, your manner scolding and serious, “You all know it is inappropriate to be making ‘dad jokes’ when none of us are actually fathers. We all know better than this.”

“What do you mean?” Bepo’s pale, bear face was knit with concern.

“Yeah, what's the big idea?” Penguin asked, his brows furrowed and defensive, “I thought we were all enjoying the dad humor. Why can't we make 'dad-jokes'?”

You remained serious, glaring at your crewmen as your eyes sparkled with delight and mischief.

“It’s a faux pa.”

The silence was broken by a sound none were anticipating. The hummed chuckle cut through the air like a slash of a blade, prompting all of you to snap your heads over to seek out the source.

Trafalgar D Water-Law and a smile painted on his lips, his eyes closed and his cup clutched firmly within his inked fingers. At that small chuckle, the crew laughed in glee: each of their melodical ulations harmonizing in unison.

“Hah! I got him!” You exclaimed, your joy evident in your eyes as you pointed your index finger at the crew around you, “Pay up, you lot.”

Slaps of Berry were scattered on the table in front of you, your subtle bounce on the balls of your feet and squeak of joy responding only had Law's smile rise further up his face.

You shot your captain a winning smile, offering him half of the Berry you collected from the crew. His palm upturned before him, a shake of his head was the refusal you needed to keep the hoard of wafer papers all to yourself.

“Alright, crew,” you offered to the Heart-Pirates around the table, “Next time we make port, drinks are on me!”

Cheers scattered amongst the crew, new joy found at the promise of fresh ales frothing at the brim. Law's eyes searched his crewmen, halting over each of them individually before his eyes settled on your form.

While his crew always managed to bring him support and had his back no matter what; the memory of his own ‘faux pa’ prompted Law to chuckle.

Donquixote Rosinante, Corazon, would be proud of the crew Law had surrounded himself with: his spectral laugh echoing in his mind as Law's smile only stretched wider.

chapter 1081 spoilers—okay, angst is fun and all but...

Shachi literally means orca in Japanese. Ikkaku means narwhal. They can dive deep (Narwhals, deeper than most submarines go, I think) and survive. Penguins are pretty good underwater for a while (though I don't know about depth). The ocean is the home of sea urchins and sea angels (Uni and Clione). And have we forgotten how hardcore Penguin and Shachi went here?:

Now, I don't know about snow geese, but we'll give Hakugan some magical properties. So while it is heartbreaking that the Polar Tang

will no longer sail the seas (and, yeah, the boys had had it forever, but this is the sub's own Going Merry moment, perhaps), I think we should believe Bepo here:

where he urges Law to have faith in the hardiness of his North Blue crew in the depths of the ocean. His concern is more with Law (but we know he'll be okay):

Bepo urges Law not to die, but the Hearts will continue to overcome. I don't know that they'll be captured either, but they must've almost escaped because Jean Bart was on land, right? In chapter 1064:

But look at this instruction (also from 1064):

where Law urges Penguin and Shachi into the water. The Hearts are fine, but I understand the angst (it's glorious, isn't it?!). I think Law's worried, obviously, but I also think he picked his crew and mode of transport for a reason beyond just remaining hidden.

Although, the Wiki says they don't know what happened to it after Bonney was captured by Blackbeard way back when, but in Egghead Jinbei does ask her:

where her ship and crew is. She states that her ship (which might be the Jewelry Margherita) was eaten by the monsters (controlled by Lilith, right?) outside of Egghead, and that she came alone.

The wiki says: (according to Vivre Card - One Piece Visual Dictionary (Card #0511), Information about Bonney is revealed), that:

Bonney seems to prioritize her own safety over her crew's as she managed to escape Marine detainment but chose not to rescue her subordinates.

That's stark contrast to Law, and we've mostly seen her operate alone, but I'm not gonna believe the Vivre cards just yet.

Also, Kid's obviously alive if Law is and if their losses were similar in wording and visuals. I think Kid's crew have saved him, if not Shanks' crew.

BUT, once Law recovers, he'll not be sequestered in a cell for ten years before he becomes relevant again (poor Kid. Damn!).

As @purplehairedwonder pointed out, the Polar Tang was carrying Law's poneglyph copies, and I bet that the crew is carrying them. Hope so. He'd be wise enough to have them waterproofed. BUT it makes more narrative sense to have them destroyed.

Now, someone was talking about how a Klabautermann is only seen when a ship is doomed (this wikipedia article supports it, but that's as far as my sources go) and therefore they didn't include images/stories/prompts about it for the Polar Tang. I can't remember who it was! Ahh, well it seems that the Klabautermann of various ships have been very busy lately.

Kuzan, too. Kuzan is cool (haha). I'm glad we saw him. And the dialogue with the Blackbeard pirates and Kuzan. OH, I almost forgot, this angst:

where Blackbeard taunts Law with the fact (yes, fact!) that there are a hundred pirates on Pirate Island still without their hearts, due to Law, and BB would be thrilled to punish Law for the fact, can't help but stir the whump-writer's heart (I'm sorry, Law).

AND, Koby and Law were in cahoots in some way, I'm sure of it (probably be disproven). Something similar to Luffy and Smoker at Alabasta, perhaps? Anyway.

Side note, do you think that Chopper used Caesar Clown's science and ego to help produce the rumble-ball like power-up he gave Bepo? If so, I wonder if this will come to play in the future when Caesar and Judge enter the fray again, if they do.

Pengy can be into a little biting, as a treat; marking in general really

He loves admiring the discolored blotches on his skin - his neck when they've got him from behind in the shower, his thighs from when they're eating him out and leave a trail of love bites, soft bruises on their hips from when him playing nice just isn't quite enough, he loves it all

Penguin admittedly does let his partner get carried away at times since even though the uniforms Law has their crew wear covers everything from head to toe the only thing most of them have underneath is just a tank top to deal with the heat, Pen included

Y = Yearning

What Penguin would like it to be, is below average - what it actually is, is a bit higher than that much to his dismay

He's not keen on bothering his partner to help out with that (partly out of embarrassment and partly because he's a grown man and ought to take care of his own urges himself), so Penguin sequesters himself in his room when he knows no one else would be about and takes care of it with a battery powered rabbit

Shachi

M = Motivation

Combing their fingers through his hair, scratching his scalp, hell any sort of affection with their hands near his head in general is greatly appreciated, but it also gets him a little bothered depending on the time of day

Shachi doesn't expect his partner to reciprocate if they're the one on the receiving end, but he does ask one night if they'd be alright with pulling his hair - god is he loud when they do

Y = Yearning

His libido is about average most of the year except for the summer, where he gets clingy and affectionate and needy (more than usual lol) as his hormones tell him that mating season is rolling around

I like to think Shachi is at least partially fishman, either half or a quarter, and anything that might affect them also affects him <3
