despite knowing what was going to happen, snotlout's redemption and eventual downfall was so so heartbreaking to me. we spend the past 10 books witnessing how much he's tormented and bullied hiccup that we all feel the same anger and frustration and resentment as fishlegs does in the beginning of 11. i was, maybe, even rooting for something a little bad to happen to him so that he can feel even a fraction of the humiliation that he put hiccup through. but time and time again hiccup, with his inherent goodness and wonderful capacity to always try and see the best in people, reminds us that people need and deserve second chances. even third, fourth and fifth chances. even when hiccup was faced with the certainty that snotlout was set on betraying him from the start.
that's why it was so satisfying to get to the emotional catharsis of the swordfight. snotlout practically begging for hiccup to hate him and hiccup genuinely not having it in him to be able to. and even after that, even after he disarms hiccup and is seconds from killing him - he doesn't. and then hiccup comforts snotlout through it. he tells him words that snotlout didn't know he's been desperate to hear. he tells him he's being too hard on himself. he tells him he's a hero. he opens a door inside snotlout's life for the first time in a long time. despite everything, he offers him another choice to join the dragonmarkers. and snotlout accepts. he bows to hiccup, he calls him king, pledges his sword to his service forever, shakes his hand and chooses to bear the dragonmark.
and it's this moment we finally seeing the seeds of change planted in snotlout sprout - instigated by gobber teaching him a lesson in the amber slavelands and reminding him what the black star represents: pride, honour, bravery. all the times we see snotlout give in to vulnerability and ponder on his choices, he's always holding onto it. which makes it all the more symbolic when he hangs it around hiccup's neck during his last act of valour.
just like how the book tells us that the tides can change so fast, through hiccup, my heart was able to give snotlout another chance too. and it's because of hiccup's belief in snotlout's potential for more that makes you feel so strongly about his death. snotlout's excitement at finally being on hiccup's side, at doing what's right, at having the opportunity to actually be a hero - we can't help but feel that burst of pride, we can't help but root for him. and so we feel the loss, as hiccup did. and it's a point driven home when hiccup ends the epilogue with how he’s carried snotlout and his sacrifice with him all throughout his life. and how time has rubbed away at the black star.
that now the star doesn't look black at all. just gold.
#a hero is WHAT bitch ? so i was re-watching rtte and remembered an old headcanon that i came up with and that i would absolutely love to share with all of you — we all know, that there are days when riders act so insufferable hiccup is about to go mental or batshit crazy or pull a "tiran" and send everyone in different directions with the stupidest tasks possible just so he can have a moment to breathe.
but what if, there are days when riders are so insufferable with their jokes about him that hiccup decides to joke too. during one of the late night checking of the island, he foresees the steel trap and steps accidentally in it — prosthetic leg, of course, but he yells like his only healthy leg got chomped off.
should i mention, that snotlout almost lost his heart and soul when he heard that scream and imagined the worst scenario possible?
«aw, snotlout, were you really that worried about me?»
«only that without both legs you'll become even more annoying... shut up, hiccup»

Floret full
Unrequited!Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III x Reader, mild Fishlegs x Reader
Words: 4,197
Your heart’s gone sour, and like all dead things, seeds sprout in its wake. Eventually they grow too large for you to handle on your own. You’ve come to terms with it. For now, you just spend your time flying under the radar, taking long walks and giving good advice. It’s a lonely life, but it’s yours.

<Previous
“Hey,” You leaned against an open door frame, wood scratchy and splintered, “Have you figured out what it means yet?”
“O-oh, hi,” Fishlegs looked up from his book, one that you noticed had an array of different plants etched onto the leather cover, “Sort of.”
You pursed your lips. As it was, you were just exploring a few whims. You didn’t like having to come to him with this, honestly preferring to keep it to yourself, but there wasn’t anywhere else to find information like this on Berk. You didn’t need to ask him, but…
“It’s a wild pansy.” He started, hesitating.
“Yes,” You urged him on. You knew this already.
“Wild Pansies symbolize love and nostalgia.” Your heart stuttered. In a way, he only just confirmed what you already knew. You couldn’t honestly find it in yourself to be surprised. You weren’t afraid, either- it wasn't as if there was much for you to do about it
Fishlegs closed his book, carefully pushing back his chair. Along the side of one wall was a large bookcase. He carefully slotted his it along one of the lower shelves.
“...Is it useful?” You looked away, rubbing at your arm. It was covered in a heavy layer of furs, mostly to hide the thinning meat.
You were all skin and bones. It was getting more and more difficult to cover up. Even now, the petals tickled at your throat.
“For skin rashes and bumps, mostly,” He looked at you meaningfully, “I-Is there a reason you’re asking?”
You furrowed your brows.
“I’ve told you,” You said, touching your face. There’s nothing on it, is there? Nothing smeared, nothing red or brown- “I just found a flower on the far side of the island. I figured it might be useful. That’s all.”
Fishlegs sighed. You rubbed your temples, your legs feeling stiff as the room began to spin a little, the silence feeling unbearably stuffy in your chest.
“How’s Ruffnut?” Fishlegs perked up slightly at the mention of his pregnant wife, his shoulders dropping, his head coming up through the sad look on his face hadn’t at all wavered.
He wouldn’t say anything, though. You knew that. He had no right to insert himself into your business. The two of you were not even close enough to qualify as acquaintances.
The closest you’d ever gotten to him before -it had been nothing but a minor instance- a short moment involving nothing but a glance, the eyeing of a stranger you’d, in the moment, mistaken for someone else.
The only thing the two of you had was a shared interest. In another world, you might have been friends. Maybe. He wasn’t the type to let anyone but himself care for his dragon if he could help it. To be friends- that was the only way you could ever have imagined it happening, not that you did.
You didn’t have to be friends for him to- to know, or to have a suspicion, at least. Yours was an open secret. If it was something that could be seen, it would have been hidden just barely out of view under a sheer veil, easy to find if anyone thought to look for it. Known, but very inconvenient- something not many were willing to bother themselves with.
Your line -your clan, your blood- had always turned out weak-hearted people, more lovers and poets than warriors. It was what made you different from the rest. It was what excluded you, made you an outcast.
You were taught to live at a distance, to sleep, to eat and to live away from the rest. It was what should have kept you safe- It wouldn't have been good for you to get attached to anyone, not unless you wanted to contract the lover’s sickness. Unfortunately for you it had happened anyway.
You’d fallen into friendship with another little outcast a very, very long time ago. Your friendship, the way it was in its prime- it was barely a memory now, a relic of a time long forgotten. It had been past -dead- even before you’d become nothing but the poor little dragon groomer, spending your teen years alone in your dusty little stables with your fine-bristled brush and washcloth watching him adventure from afar.
Your heart, so vulnerable and fragile, had slowly begun to beat for a place it didn’t belong.
You sighed, feeling the open breeze rush up your front, somehow blowing through all your layers and layers of cloth and furs, keeping an open ear.
“I just- I don’t know what I’m doing wrong,” Their relationship was on the rocks, it was true, but that had nothing to do with you. You really had no intention of messing with it. The outcome was predetermined- they would overcome it and remain just as strong as they always had.
“Why don’t you just… Give it time?” You sighed, voice raspy as you stared out over the oceans that surrounded New Berk, “Maybe it’s not just her- or not just you. It sounds like you both need to cool off. Time… I think time makes things easier.”
This wasn’t a new thing- they were no longer the same knobby-kneed teenagers who met each other with new eyes, who did their best to clutch onto sweaty, strange hands with palms that didn’t quite fit. If they weren’t meant for each other then, they certainly were now.
They, who spent hours, days and years fighting and loving and living together. It.. It had changed him irrevocably. Unrecognizably. You were sure of it.
They were molded to a perfect fit.
You couldn’t love him- you couldn’t look at him, yet you thought of him. You thought of him all of the time. You missed him, sometimes; who he’d been, the ghost of who he could have become… Who you might have known.
You could have only wished to have a fraction of what they had with anyone at all. It was only unfortunate that being a lover hadn’t attracted any love to you.
“I don’t know,” Hiccup bent at the waist, elbows resting on his knees. He rubbed at his eyes with shaky, square fingers. A budding beard, fluffy cape and respectable leather armor- he almost made up the perfect image of ‘young, promising Chief.’
His feet hug over the cliffside, swinging airily, displacing pebbles along the edge. The smell of fresh dew cradled your senses- or what senses you had left. Recent rainfall made wandering along the cliff sides dangerous. Neither of you cared for the danger.
Hiccup’s years on dragonback made him reckless. Your years of yearning and distress made you apathetic. You found yourself along the cliffs often.
“That’s what everyone is always telling me. I’m… I’m not sure I'm doing the right thing. I’m not sure I did the right thing.” He ranted.
As his trusted confidant, you welcomed him when he dropped down besides you, always the listener. You didn’t have much of a voice to talk with anymore, anyways. Your throat was sore, voice scratchy.
“What’s right is… different,” You twirled the stem of a flower between your fingers. You’d coughed it up before he’d gotten there, “For everyone, I think.”
“You’re Chief, Hiccup. You’re… You’re at her mercy. You’re at everyone’s mercy,” You cleared your throat. It was a wet noise, something you brushed past quickly, speaking as fast as you could manage as if your words might be able to drown out your aches, “She’s always been right for you, though-... hasn’t she? You’ve loved her since we were kids. You loved her as a teen. You married her. You’re trying to have children.”
“I know, but… ” His voice cracked, “I feel like I’m holding her back.”
“There is no one else for you, is there?” You gave him a pointed look, an urgent one. Something in you begged, though you weren’t sure for what. He’d taken her honor. He’d- He’d taken yours. He took your heart and you were sure she loved him as much as she could love anyone on Berk. To part from her now would be… cruel. It was cruel. So maybe, in your own way, you were urging him not to make a mistake. To not do something he would ultimately regret. “You can’t say you’re not enough for her. She’s the only one who can decide that.”
“Yeah… Yeah,” He slowly nodded his affirmative, staring up into the clouds as seabirds called to each other in the sky. “I just… I miss Toothless. He was my best friend. I know it’s been years, but don’t know if I can be sure of anything without him here.”
You hummed. That was a sentiment you understood very well.
You were tired.
Death by flower was the coward’s way out. It was more honorable to go on your own terms, not led by some silly organ-led emotions. It was unvikingly. It was dishonorable.
You hadn’t the courage or mind to die by any other terms, though. You didn’t want to die, and wasn’t that a bitter thought?
You’d always known that you might not have a choice.
You closed and opened your eyes in odd intervals as you strolled through the new forests. Your direction was aimless, just as it had been for many days. Sometimes it would bring you back into the village for food you couldn’t eat, sometimes it would bring you to other unreachable parts of the forests.
From lived experience, you knew that half of the danger of the flower disease was malnourishment. You’d seen plenty die to that before the roots and blossoms had grown tall enough to choke and to suffocate.
You wondered which death would claim you first.
You could, appropriately, feel your days coming to an end. You hadn't had much energy for a long while.
Besides making it harder to breathe, your flowers made it near impossible to eat. As soon as anything touched the back of your throat, you’d be sent into another coughing fit.
The higher fields located above on the cliffs were unreachable to you, who was too weak and weary to climb upwards.
After you expended the last of your reserves finding your way through a thicket, you stopped by a small stream, hoping to find a quiet place to rest.
You stared at the ever-moving water. You imagined what it would be like, to be so unaffected, to run so free.
This new island had all the right parts, just in all the wrong places. The same plants, trees, grass, oceans- It all made you miss home. Berk. You wanted for trickling streams and cool, running rivers; not these, but the ones you’d known better than yourself once upon a time.
Lazily, after a moment of blank staring, you found yourself eyeing your own reflection in the water. You couldn’t say you were anything to gawk at with bags under your eyes and the hollows of your cheeks stark and deep.
The large coat you wore made you look imposing. Wise.
You didn’t feel like either of those things, but you did feel… settled, almost.
You lowered yourself between two rocks by the creekside, filled with a sense of nostalgia. They cradled you gently, the dirt beneath you deep and dipping, slightly damp. It was the first time you’d been comfortable in a long while, or as comfortable as you could have been as roots burrowed through soft, mucousy flesh.
It was a good place to think. A nice spot to nap.
If you cut it down to its most simple parts, you would have to say that Hiccup was the sun.
You stared up into the empty blue sky, laced sporadically with clouds in the shape of thin white cotton. It was bright out, almost painfully so.
You used to liken him to a star, but like a stray sheep, he’d left for brighter, more suited pastures. You were the night sky, a dark blanket with no light, an empty background. Stifling, perhaps. Unwarranted, unwanted.
Maybe it was out of some subconscious effort that you’d decided you’d have to take matters into your own hands. You were your own stars, now. Every petal was a new blinking star in the night sky, every leaf a constellation.
That was a better alternative to the truth. It was a sweet lie.
You blinked, half lidded eyes feeling heavier than the weight in your limbs, under the burden of your own throbbing heart.
None shone as bright as him. The rest- they’d only been mirrors, charcoal smeared onto paper, wasted likenesses. Maybe if you’d had more- more people, friends, lovers- …Perhaps, if he hadn’t been your only star- if you’d had more people to love, you wouldn’t have cared for those seeds so thoroughly.
There is no one else for you, is there?
He couldn’t get what you’d said out of his mind.
You’ve loved her since we were kids.
It- It was a tickling thought, something he hadn’t paid much mind to, not at first. He’d been wondering where you’d been going off to these past few days.
What’s right is… different.
He’d stumbled upon it earlier.
He’d been pushing through old brambles, searching for you when no one else would. You weren’t known well enough for anyone in the village to chase after. You weren’t known well enough for anyone to care- or to- to even recognize when you’d gone missing.
You were close to Hiccup.
His breath caught.
Neither you nor Hiccup ever expected to die in a blaze of glory, so perhaps it was fitting.
There were no fancy arrangements or large, bursting bushels, no curling, dramatic vines or unveiling of roots to signify some grand and important passing. It was a simple, narrow clearing with sparse dustings of flowers, not extravagant but no less precious.
The pansies were in a varied state of birth, bloom and wilt. Already, there were pods ripe with seeds dotting the grasses around solid boulders and swaying trees, sprouting from the first just around your final resting place.
Hiccup would not have recognized it for what it was if he hadn’t seen your body, graying and cold, wedged between the rocks.
You’d been off, recently. Out of it. Or maybe you’d been off for a long while- silent, solemn, lonesome.
A heavy weight fell on Hiccup’s chest.
He wondered how long you’d been suffering.
He wondered why he hadn’t noticed, why it was that you’d spent your last days alone.
Sometime between adolescence and adulthood, you’d grown. You’d been able to cast off the confusion and awkwardness that had bonded the two of you together. Where there was unsurety and gawkiness before, there grew a sense of wisdom and a deep sort of knowing.
He’d never expected you to-... You’d always been there, in the back. It hit him slowly- now that you were gone, it felt as if all the answers seemed to have gone with you.
Mind absent of process and reason, Hiccup bent down, and, gently, pulled a few pods from their stems. He hadn’t the faintest clue why, how, or what he was doing, but grief did many odd things to a person.
He stalled. It didn’t feel right to move, not with his limbs feeling so stiff, as if his flesh had become solid around bone, tense.
Hiccup inhaled deeply. To disturb your dirt- it felt sacrilegious. He would leave your body as it was. He intended to.
It would need to be burned if not now then eventually- soon. The flowers would overrun the island.
Hiccup just hadn’t the heart to do it himself.
Perhaps he’d sew the seeds in a pit by his house. Maybe he would keep them in a pot by his workbench, though he’d never been the type to grow anything so delicate. He’d never been the type to care for plants at all, in fact.
Hiccup rubbed his creased brows, sitting at a full table, papers and effects spilling off of the sides like waterfalls.
Even after all these years, the feeling that he just wasn’t cut out for this life still hadn’t left him. He didn’t enjoy this.
He didn’t like directing Vikings, managing houses or organizing expeditions. Trying to keep everyone in line was stressful. Being in charge of the upkeep of all the storehouses and events and stock was unbearable.
He couldn’t just fly off when he needed to take a break.
Hiccup dealt with it, but sometimes, even keeping up with his friends was difficult. His family. Snotlout, the Twins- they definitely got on his nerves now a lot more than before. Fishlegs was helpful. The most help, though, came from Astrid.
Not in the typical sense. She was a doer, not a manager. She was a pusher and a fighter and sometimes that was just what he needed to force himself to keep going. Astrid, truly, was strong. Their relationship was the same. Good, sturdy.
She valued capability, and boy did he try to be capable. He proved his worth time and time again. She loved him for it. It was all he’d ever wanted. At least, that’s what he thought. Still, he wondered if she’d ever thought of being with someone else- If she’d wondered if she was better off alone the same way he did, staring up at the ceiling during cold nights, her back turned far away from him; if he was good for her- if she was good for him.
It was a lot of work to constantly meet her toe-to-toe, especially in times when he just needed rest.
But no, Astrid was good. Perfect, even.
He hated the thought, because she’d never done anything to deserve that kind of thinking. Him, being there- that’s what she needed and deserved, because there were hundreds of Vikings who would kill to be in his place. Because if he couldn’t keep up, then why was he here? Why had he wasted so much of her time?
No. She’d chosen him.
She’d chosen him.
Hiccup clung to that phrase like a mantra, eyeing the pot on the windowsill.
He frowned at the wilting leaves, pushing up from his desk, his chair sliding back against wood, scraping.
He moved towards the sill.
He kept a watering can there, always filled. It was the least he could do.
It had been slightly displaced during some time or other. There was a noticeable mark under where it usually sat which Hiccup grimaced at. No matter how many times he tried to brush it off, it was still there.
He reminded himself to try sanding it off later if he had time, though that would probably fall to the wayside, same as many of his other crafts.
By it, there was a flower on the sill in a pot. Caring for it had effectively become part of his routine.
It was difficult at first, just another thing he had to keep up with. But over time he found that it was relaxing, unwinding in a way he’d never have thought. Even when he was at his busiest, he’d found time for it. He’d been careful to prune dead and unwieldy branches. To pick out weeds, bring it in during the winter and replace the soil every spring.
He realized with displeasure that he had been neglecting it.
Astrid sometimes looked at him oddly for the hobby though she never said anything, probably wondering why he’d picked it up so suddenly in the first place.
Hiccup scratched his beard, watching as water sunk deep into the pot soil.
He smiled faintly as he heard hurried footsteps march up the porch to the Haddock home, too light to be Astrid or Gobber or any one of the other Riders.
The door swung wide open as his children burst through, trampling wood as they ran in.
He caught a glance of the outdoors in his periphery as the door swung shut.
It was a bright day outside, paths littered with small purple and white flowers. The fields, he knew, would be blooming too. Even after the burning, they were still there.
As he’d predicted, the flowers eventually crept into the village. As he hadn’t, they didn’t get in the way of the crops or paths or anything else of the sort. They didn’t drown out the fields, either, hardly suffocating as he’d expected.
There had been a bustle before, some mild annoyance as people beat them back, but after the initial irritation, well, it was quite plain to see- they weren’t malicious.
They were easy to get used to, and so after a while, most decided just to let them be. They became just another part of the island, though there was some prevailing confusion as to where they had come from.
A little body stopped right next to him, standing on her tallest toes as she also made an effort to examine the soil. She let out a groan right after, probably very quickly coming to the realization that there wasn’t much of anything interesting to look at -at least not for her- which was just as well, he supposed.
“Why do you water the pansies?” Came the annoyed voice of his daughter as Hiccup placed the watering can back onto its rightful spot on the sill, “There are so many outside already.”
Hiccup furrowed his brows again, trying to find the right words. He was at a loss trying to figure out how to answer. He didn’t know how.
“...A good friend of mine gave them to me.” He tried the phrase on his tongue. Still, even after he said it, it didn’t feel quite right.
It was true, in a way. Ignoring Hiccup’s own part in harvesting them, you’d given everyone and the whole island some sorely needed color.
Maybe his daughter could tell he was sort of unsure himself as she snorted, the same way she did whenever she wrinkled her nose and looked at him with what he could only call befuddlement.
He didn’t look at her.
After some thinking, privately, he decided that they reminded him of the way you used to look at him, like he was the only thing you’d ever cared for. He used to shy away from it, but now, especially in times like these, he missed it.
He stared at the soft petals as she wandered off, loudly dragging her brother along with her.
Hiccup could say that, in part, the flowers were reminiscent of better times- that would also be true. He wasn’t sure which ‘better times’ he was referring to though. He could mean the times he spent out with the Riders or the ones he spent with Toothless soaring over the archipelago, but also, faintly, he remembered all the quiet times you two had spent together after the fact, still moments and stolen peace.
He recalled the way the fire looked as the two of you sat across it in the early hours when everyone else had gone to bed, when even the crickets were silent and the licking heat and crackling sparks were the only things that existed. He’d spent the time talking to you, the two of you whispering in loud and hushed voices.
He could almost smell the burning logs, feeling his arms twitch, recalling the way his arms flexed and stiffened as he fed sticks and stumps into the pit.
He felt sort of odd caring for the flowers sometimes when his reminiscing would bring him and his watering can to the bushes on the outskirts of New Berk, when the feeling would ghost over his fingers and through the dirt as he spent his time tending to and replanting many of Berk’s blooming pansies.
When he did, he imagined what sort of life he’d have led if you’d survived, somehow. It was impossible, yet even so, he wished for it.
He was an interloper of a sort, looking out for flowers born from a love that was not meant for him.
He could picture the last time he saw you alive, looking over those clifftops. He wished he’d said more, said something valuable, something important to leave you with. He wasn’t completely sure what, but he wished he would have said something.
Hiccup leaned against the windowsill on closed fists, looking finally outwards, into the trees and past them to the few straggling Vikings he could observe over the cliffs.
He puzzled gently, picturing your face. Sometimes, when he thought of you, it almost felt a little bit like-
Hiccup paused as a cough wracked through his upper body, causing him to tense and lightly beat at his chest, burying his nose into his elbow and shutting his eyes tightly.
It’d been happening more and more often. It had gotten to the point where it had begun to give him the shakes.
As the spasms calmed, he thought of going to a healer, as he occasionally did.
Then Hiccup wiped his mouth, rubbing his hand off on his pants leg and brushing it off by the palm, as he always did.
It was just a cold, after all. It’d pass.

Hotd/Got fans and Httd fans. I just had an idea au/crossover.
Ok, so we know the doom of Valyria and how the Targaryens were the only dragon lords to survive, correct?
Well, what if that wasn't the case? What if very few members of House Belaerys and Aurion escaped the doom of Valyria by ship but were separated from their dragons and the Targaryens?
What if instead of regrouping in Dragonstone, they set sail near to the north and landed themselves on viking Land, and for their own survival, they lived amongst them?
As many generations passed, their bloodlines lived on, but they had forgotten who they once were.
As for the dragons that were separated, they found themselves an isolated island where they lived and repopulated. Making their island, an isle of dragons.
But dragons still need food to survive, so they tormented the viking island nearby, stealing their animals and food for many years to the point where the vikings fought back and only killed very few dragons.
For GENERATIONS, the bloodlines of the dragonlords still ran strong, but the descendants had forgotten who they were. But then Valka was taken by a dragon to their island, and her son Hiccup Haddock, who is the son of chief Stoic the vast and future chief of their island Berk, tamed his dragon and taught his friends how to tame theirs. Unbeknownst to him, his group Astrid, Fishlegs, Snotlout, and the twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut are also descendants of the dragonlords of Old Valyria.
Hiccup and his friends defend their home and people with their mighty dragons and defend and protect the wild dragons who come under their care and treat them as one of their own, along with great respect and care.
Although the language of Valyria is unknown to them, their dragons understand them nonetheless.
Hiccup is also known to not just be a mighty dragon master, rider of the alpha dragon and strong future chief, but he is also known for his engineering, protector of Berk, his one leg (obviously), and the dragon games champion 4 years running.
(I also need someone to make fanart of the Httyd dragons in Grrm style, please, and thank you)

I want to see an AU where the gang from rtte interacts with a gang in which rtte didn’t happen (probably set after/during THW).
I feel like this is kinda similar to the third movie (which I should mention I am not a reliable source because I forgot most of it and only rewatch parts that I like because light fury, Snotlout and some plot points makes me angry and the ending makes me sad.) This happened mainly because of third movie Snotlout but from what I remember and what I’ve seen in the fandom, third movie Snotlout is basically removing all the development from rtte which is sad.
It would just be interesting cause I consider rtte to be canon and the plot holes it causes for the movie you just explain away or ignore and they developed so much during rtte. Like that’s the series where they all come into their own and grow the most as a team. If rtte didn’t happen I think they would still obviously be close and bonded but not to the same extent. They also just wouldn’t have the same development that happened in rtte.
So like, I kinda just want to see the two Snotlouts interacting tbh but also the rest of the group too. Like imagine Hiccup from rtte talking about Viggo and Hiccup who has only dealt with Grimmel (or has at least been introduced to Grimmel) is like wait there’s a better one? I could honestly go on a whole rant about Rtte Hiccup vs some of THW Hiccup’s decisions.
A lot of things would stay the same because it would just happen in Berk like Hiccup and Astrid getting together and they would probs have a cute betrothal necklace scene and all that plus many other necessary bits for all of them and to an extent similar development but rtte brings in a bunch of opportunities that wouldn’t come otherwise even with Hiccup going out and adventuring. So I think the idea that it didn’t happen is so fun to explore. Also if we add/remove Rob/Dob that adds a whole other layer.
This is also partly fuelled by my guilty pleasure for characters meeting their older selfs but in this case the younger ones are cooler - or they could meet at the same age but the rtte gang would be a lot more knowledgeable and close as a team when they are older.
I’ll probably do more on this but it’s already so long.
#THW#thw salt#grimmel the grisly#i hate him honestly#Viggo would destroy him#yes I am biased for Viggo#aren’t we all?#vigcup#imagine the drama when non rtte finds out Hiccup was in love with a dragon hunter#Httyd#hiccup haddock#snotlout jorgenson#rtte#viggo grimborn#snotlout snotlout oi oi oi#httyd movies#httyd rtte#astrid hofferson#fishlegs ingerman#ruffnut thorston#tuffnut thorston#race to the edge

This is another difference between Hiccup and Horrendous, I believe.
Here in the book, Horrendous (aged 10 still) believes the warning at the front and that's why he doesn't want the coffin to be opened. He believes in the curse to the point of panicking when his father opens a supposedly cursed coffin.
In the movies and shows, Hiccup is a firm sceptic. He's familiar with their rituals and their deities, but doesn't seem to believe in them. Certainly not as much as, say, Fishlegs who was ready to blame disappearing islands on the wrath of Odinn or Thor. Astrid, too, seems to believe when she recalls the tale of her aunt who had to sail off the edge of the world to satisfy Odinn or something.
The only moment we've seen Hiccup believe in any way is when he and his friends made that tribute for Thorr, hoping it would stop the thunderstorms above Berk, thereby keeping scrutiny off Toothless' back.
Even when bones rain down from the sky, he calls it "weird" and still doesn't believe in this Fog Monster that supposedly took Johann's boat in the Breakneck Bog episode in Riders of Berk. He needs hard proof before he believes in anything supernatural or paranormal. (That or Toothless needs to be at risk)
Even so, I still don't think he would've just opened a coffin. Not because he actually believes in curses, but rather out of respect for the person inside.
Maybe it's the difference in age- one is 10, the other 15- maybe it's because the books do hint at magic and the mystic being real. (Apparently, Httyd and TWOO take place in the same universe?) Either way, an interesting difference between the two, for sure.
#once again i am just imagining these two in the same world together#the older brother who needs hard evidence before he believes in a curse#and the younger brother telling his elder to please please please PLEASE NOT DO THIS THING THAT IS CLEARLY CURSED#i can't enjoy wickedcriminal's half-brother's AU due to all the books I have yet to read but can i slowly form my own?#i am in love#httyd books#httyd movies#httyd book 2#how to be a pirate#rob#riders of berk#hiccup haddock#hiccup horrendous haddock III#the dragon boys#astrid hofferson#fishlegs ingerman#liveblog

I finished watching RTTE and I am. Emotional
#GAHFHHH…I don’t know what to do with myself rn.#I’ll probably rewatch some of my fave episodes bc I don’t think I’m ready to be done with it yet 🤧#I WILL say tho the ending was uhhh#Pretty rushed. Lol#They had maybe 2-3 minutes to wrap it up#When instead they probably could have used an entire episode#Dedicated to various things.#i.e. The Dragon Riders coming to terms with saying goodbye to the Edge.#Mala and Dagur’s wedding.#Stoick regaining consciousness and his reunion with Hiccup.#VALKA’S CAMEO?? HELLO???#Yeah they could have easily stretched out all of that into one epilogue episode for sure#Also I’m. I’m kinda bummed they dropped Fishlegs/Heather bc they were SO cute#AND SNOTLOUT/MINDEN#He literally shouted ‘THAT’S MY GIRL!!’ when she showed up in the final fight 😭#But yeah I’ve never really been a fan of Fishlegs/Ruffnut? Not that I don’t understand the appeal but like#It’s just hard for me to imagine Ruffnut in a relationship with anybody. Except maybe Throk bc they made it WORK#Seeing her and Fishlegs all cuddly and cute in Homecoming feels SO OOC to me#But I digress.#Fishlegs/Heather had good chemistry 🥺#Astrid/Heather even MORE so. GOD I love those girlfriends#Shima speaks#HTTYD#How To Train Your Dragon#Anyway ghfhh. Now that I’m done with the series maybe my brain can hyperfixate on smth new#That’ll actually give me motivation to draw again. Sighs

about to watch an hour & a half long video titled "Why How To Train Your Dragon 3 Is Not Good" & I feel so fucking vindicated right now
#I'M GONNA SAY IT: HTTYD 3 SUCKS ASS. I'M RIGHT & I SHOULD SAY IT#like from a writer's standpoint it sucks but ALSO from a viewer's standpoint. HTTYD 2 & 3 just aren't very good#i mean obviously 3 is waaaay worse than 2 but both take any & all character development from 1 & kinda throw it in the garbage#& i think because 1 was so good it just set the bar so high. but then again#Riders of Berk. Defenders of Berk. & RTTE were all very good shows with like less than a quarter the budget of the movies#why did the shows have better characterization & development than the actual main movies?#you cannot imagine my disappointment when they were like ''whatever let's just slap Ruff with Snotlout or Fishlegs at the end''#Snotloud & Fishlegs are bisexual & dating. this is the only version of canon i will accept#the shows gave me that why can't the movies???#yes they literally kiss in the show. yes you need to watch it right now#idk i feel like in the movies hiccup is the only character. everyone is a background character to him#& his characterization isn't even consistent with the first movie#he unlearns how to draw. he fucking unlearns how to draw because he's too cool for loser hobbies now. i'm going to kill someone

hope you don't mind me pretty much spamming your ask box lately 😭 /lh
but yeah like i said jtta is consuming my mind and it's all i've been thinking abt these days /pos
i remember when i was re-reading it a few days ago, i saw httyd get mentioned and i got so happy (i LOVE httyd 😭)
what does IK think of the movies if she has seen them??!?! 👀
also i hc satan would love toothless, since he acts like a cat sometimes and satan loves cats-
ty that's all i have for today *disappears into thin air*
no worries it's not spam at all!! i always love getting asks ^^
and heck yeah ik would love the movies!! anything with cool dragons has always been a shoe-in for her, so you'd have been likely to find her watching them whenever she got bored at home when she was younger
ik has a toothless plushie from aunt lisa and every time he visits her house satan always finds and sits there holding it the entire time. he only refrains from just taking it home with him because he knows ik would get upset (she gets him his own at some point and he nearly cries)
#answering asks#valenrien#personally while i do love the movies in isolation i think they're AWFUL adaptations of the og books#like. they didn't even include the dragon furious???? or the dragon rebellion???#alvin the treacherous is some other guy entirely. as are fishlegs and snotlout and stoick and just about everyone else#also they completely replaced camicazi with astrid who (and i'm sorry for this is vastly inferior)#(tbf i guess camicazi's name might have been a bit of an issue. and if they were gonna pair her with hiccup i'm glad they just replaced her#they didn't even give hiccup the red hair and blue eyes#let me clarify my stance. the httyd movies are great but they really should've just changed some of the names#and done it as an original story#because it is basically an entire separate entity to the books#anyway ik doesn't share my opinions on the matter because she's just like 'cool dragons? sold'#though she would be a little upset about the lack of book toothless (who is tiny and green and also such a little shit)#i do however like to imagine that levi would share in my pain

been rewatching rtte
toothless is called T multiple times, but the letter T doesn't exist in the alphabet of this world
i think hiccup was also called H???
hiccup went to the wedding of the man who tried to kill him and his family multiple times. no wonder he thought he could change drago's mind
snotlout is canonically a theater kid
"you're so small and cuddly" "please never say that again"
the twins are really smart, but they're also just stupid
hiccup straight up disappears when he's working on something
heather had a super noticeable crush on astrid
fishlegs got a love interest!! a plus size main character actually has a cool, badass love interest!
it was super hetnormative but it was cute
there was an island full of flying women who were implied to regularly commit cannibalism
hiccup taught all the riders how to fly with toothless, that's so sweet
everyone is a flat earther except for the twins
hiccup almost directly killed a lot of people
and killed a LOT more when destroying their ships
“scalding– cal..ding--" "toothle, plama bla!" was pretty much the funniest part of the entire series
dagur was bullied as a kid by a guy 8 years older than him who literally tattooed an imagine of him beating up little dagur in his arm??? What was that all about
actually we need to talk about how messed up everything about dagur is and about how the things that could've/did happen(ed) to him may be the reasons why he's Like That
just why was he imprisoned by the outcasts??? he didn't do anything to them directly
oof my brain is spiraling. "he loved you" "ig now we'll never know" what do you mean he didn't know if his dad loved him
there's a technically musical episode
tuffnut became hiccup's defense attorney and immediately got him the death sentence
hiccup regularly jumps off cliffs
he also jumped off a boat, with his arms tied and without toothless. just where did he think he was going
snotlout's annoying attitude is actually because spitelout pressures him too much and he feels like he has to be perfect for his dad :((
THE 'HICCUP'S EVIL MIRROR' VILLAIN THEME DONE RIGHT YESS!!!
viggo is the best httyd villain change my mind (you can't, swords at sundown, you may bring backup but i will win on my own)
skrill comeback skrill comeback SKRILL COMEBACK!!!!
"COMEEE TO DADDY"
what is a boar pit???
oh my god i had missed this series so much. it has no right to be this funny
this was my childhood. it has forever shaped the way i am
berserker heather the unhinged >>>
actually good disability rep! yay
hiccup complains about his peg leg pinching him
he straight up cannot walk without it and it is shown many times
"well, there are the benefits of a metal leg" after it got caught in a bear trap
funny moments, like snotlout trying to steal it to use it as a weapon
the jokes!! toothless laughing at the jokes!!! hiccup being so fucking done with the twins, who are always making the jokes!
there's an episode where everyone is so sleep deprived they actually start spiraling
astrid becomes a happy go lucky girl, hugs snotlout and tells him he's handsome
the fucking mood swings snotlout got were insane
the twins were straight up just hallucinating
"i sent them to wash their dragons, how could they mess that up?" cut to heather falling on her face with a bucket full of water in her hands
fishlegs becomes so paranoid, he's yelling at everyone all the time
"don't you know the trapper's trap can trap the trapper?? ...oh gods, i must be losing it, i'm quoting dagur"
YOOOO VALKA!!!! it's so nice to see her
hiccup tried to murder dagur to stop him from getting to toothless, which is scary bc it shows just how far he's willing to go for his bff, but also funny because hiccup. that was not going to work
oh the hiccstrid slowburn, how i have missed you
the twins's made up language
there was a beach episode turned murder mystery and a musical episode held at gun point
hiccup has a whole little speech that he periodically gives astrid to remind her that the twins serve a purpose
#i'll make more of these later#i'm just very bored and i love rtte#race to the edge#rtte#how to train your dragon#httyd#httyd rtte#toothless#hiccup horrendous haddock iii#astrid hofferson#snotlout jorgenson#fishlegs ingerman#dagur the deranged#tuffnut thorston#ruffnut thorston#heather the unhinged#avis' post

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III x Fem!Reader Synopsis: four of the many times hiccup was oblivious to the fact he was in love with you and the time he finally realised. Word Count: 1.5K Tags: 4+1 fic, Fluff, Hiccups pov Note: started this ages ago and only just got inspired enough to finish it.
1. Searching for you in a crowd
Hiccup would never admit it, even now that he is respected as the heir to the hairy hooligan tribe and his father is proud of him. That he still feels like an outsider.
Maybe it’s because they see him as this dragon master and while he might be if he’s to listen to anything Fishlegs says- he feels like they don’t see anything else- he is still just the chief’s son, the future of the tribe or their saviour if any of his work on the edge was talked about. He was never just Hiccup to them, even to his friends they see him as this omnipotent being rather than just a teen like them- capable of making mistakes.
He suggests that this is why he prefers to have time alone- just him, toothless the ocean beneath them and the wind carrying them elsewhere, where he can be anything.
Annoyingly, this is not something he can do now: walking into the great hall at dinner time. He can already feel the beginnings of a headache wracking his brain as he imagines the awkward conversations he is going to have with villagers about his work on the edge as of late or the nagging of his father and Gobber to come back to Berk so he can learn the ways of chiefdom- something he is unsure that he even wants.
Entering the great hall after a large exhale, Hiccup looks around, searching for something lips pursing when he can’t find it immediately. It is only when he walks closer to where his father is sat, calling out pleasantries to those who greet him on the way that his eyes lock onto your figure, listening intently to what Ruffnut and Tuffnut are saying. Following the movements of their arms with your eyes as they spoke animatedly about who knows what. Hiccup finds a small smile appear on his face at the sight of you, only looking away when his father claps a hand behind his back making him aware of his surroundings, turning towards his father struggling to listen to whatever issue his father needs resolving around Berk this time, his thoughts still surrounding his best friend, knowing that as long as you are here he can be himself, just Hiccup. As that was always more than enough for you and that idea alone makes him feel less like an outsider.
2. Missing you when apart
He was starting to regret saying you couldn’t come with him. Not that he doesn’t enjoy Astrid and (sometimes) Snotlout’s company, but it clearly isn’t the same. While he usually enjoys scouting missions as they are a peaceful opposition to the dangerous missions they have had as of late, you typically come with him.
But he knows that you cannot leave the edge defenceless and Astrid was complaining about not getting out with Stormfly enough- so it all made sense logically for Astrid to come instead and for you to stay on land, protecting the dragon eye lenses the group had hidden.
He couldn’t trust anyone more which is why he was confused as to why he felt so anxious. Even Toothless could notice the angst radiating off his rider, making a noise of questioning at Hiccup when he was quieter than normal, not even going over the route the group were scouting- something he usually did a hundred times until the group got annoyed at him. Not even playfully joking with Snotlout about who was the better cousin until Astrid would make a comment that would set Snotlout off arguing with her.
Instead, the three riders sat in somewhat awkward silence with Astrid and Snotlout starting at each other trying to gauge if the other knew what was wrong with the boy and who was going to ask him as seemingly neither wanted to as usually you would look after Hiccup when he got like this but you were back on the edge and honestly Astrid was wishing she didn’t kick up such a fuss about her and Stormfly’s lack of action as even being bored back on the edge was better than being sat in this haunting silence.
It was only upon returning to the edge that the two saw his mood pick up, he nearly crashed Toothless into the ground at the speed he dismounted causing the other two to look around in panic until they saw him running towards you and then it all made sense. The two snickering slightly as they realised that he was only in a foul mood because you weren't around.
3. You looking after him when he gets sick
“It was only a matter of time” you muttered to him as you bundled him up in his blankets and he knew that you were right, you had been telling him for weeks to wear some warmer clothes during his flights with Toothless and his lack of listening has left him bedridden with a horrible cold, head pounding, nose blocked and red cheeks. He could only imagine the state of him somehow shaking and sweating all at the same time. He would’ve replied with something teasing if his throat didn’t feel so scratchy so he simply settled for a huff which made you laugh quietly in return.
“Okay, I will stop being mean, but only if you get some sleep” you reasoned with the boy as he whined at the idea thinking of everything he had to today
“I will get Astrid and Fishlegs to take your jobs for the day- can't have you getting any sicker what would your Father say?” you continued and at these words, the boy stopped fussing, the exhaustion finally catching up to him.
“Have a good sleep Hiccup, I will be here when you wake up,” you muttered as he dozed off.
For some reason, Hiccup couldn’t understand those words made him feel so much better.
4. When his dad mentions you
Small talk with his father even after all this time was still somewhat awkward, like the feeling of your skin being too big for your bones. But, it was much better than it used to be or at least Hiccup usually believed it was. Still, today he would give anything to be anywhere but sit with his dad in their family home as he couldn’t stop going on about you and possibly betrothals something Hiccup knew would annoy you.
“I heard a lot of the boys around here want to ask for her hand, so maybe you should get a move on” Stoick spoke trying to hint at the boy's clear feelings for you
“I- what?” Hiccup asked confused, when had he ever shown interest in that?
“Oh it's nothing” Stoick tried to cover his tracks feeling Hiccups in annoyance at his words ‘you two just remind me of myself and a special someone when I was younger”
“What are you and Gobber? I’m sure she will be very flattered by those words Dad” Hiccup laughed before quickly taking his leave before his father could sprout out any more nonsense.
“Me and your mother” Stoick muttered but Hiccup was already gone, probably halfway back to the edge due to how fast he bolted out the door.
5. The realisation
Watching you interact with Toothless was one of Hiccup's favourite things to do. Seeing his dragon take a shine to you just as much as he does makes a warmth spread all over his body in a comforting way.
“Hiccup, my brother! What’s happening?” Tuffnut called out as he made his way towards the boy Hiccup quickly looked away from you for some reason embarrassed to be nearly caught by the boy, his cheeks red and hot
“Not- not a lot” Hiccup tried to smile but it came off uneasy much like his words. To his luck, Tuffnut didn't seem to notice instead looking at where Hiccup had his eyes trained just moments before before looking back at the boy
“Don’t worry I see” Tuffnut nodded in understanding causing Hiccup to become confused
“See what?” he questioned the peculiar boy
“You were finally building up the courage to ask her out!” Tuffnut declared “I mean it’s about time everyone knows you have the biggest crush on her! Don’t let me stop you, in fact, I wasn't even here!” the boy quickly ran off as Hiccup's thoughts whirled around his brain about what on earth was Tuffnut on about he didn’t have a crush on you. No way. I mean sure you are the first person he looks for in a crowd of people, he gets irritable when you aren't with him on missions, you are the only one he would want looking after him and his father loves you but that doesn't mean he likes you right- your his best friend he couldn't possibly- could he?
Then it hit Hiccup, he did have the biggest crush on his best friend, more than a crush really. He was irrevocably in love with you and to make matters worse Tuffnut knew before he did.

Yesssss to these! Also do y’all wanna see the cane I designed for Fishlegs ?
Some HTTYD Book headcanons! (A few full-series spoilers ahead)
Hiccup is ambidextrous (because he learned he was left-handed when he was 10, he can now write with both hands! He favors his left of course but it's good to have a fall back)
The Deadly Shadow is hypoallergenic. I don't really know how it works but it definitely it makes Fishlegs's life a little easier
Hiccup says "oh dear" and "oh my goodness" a lot, so I like to think he also says other old lady phrases like "good gracious" "dearie me" and "as I live and breathe". He also calls his friends "my dear", ala "my dear Fishlegs, my dear Camicazi" and "my dear little Toothless" (I'm especially fond of 'my dear little Toothless')
Since Excellinor is a witch and has the ability to prophesy, Alvin and even Fishlegs also have inherited a mild ability to see into the future, maybe via dreams or a sense of deja vu. Fishlegs doesn't figure it out until he's older, in which he picks up soothsaying as a side hobby and gets really good at it.
Fishlegs and Hiccup make songs together and sing them at parties. Fishlegs is a wonderful singer and can hold a tune very well.
Bog-Burglars are some of the best dancers in the archipelago, having some crazy and impressive moves due to being escape artists with impeccable balance and flexibility.
Camicazi never gets taller than 5"4
The trio get more tattoos as they get older. Camicazi gets colorful designs all over her skin that are inked with special oils from Stormfly that allow the tattoos to change depending on her mood. Fishlegs gets a neat, stylized lobster in honor of his mother, as well as a stylized three-headed dragon. And Hiccup gets three seadragon designs; the Wodensfang tattooed on one arm, Furious on the other, and Toothless over his heart.
An idea from @orangeblob79 is that Fishlegs uses a cane for his limp! I love this headcanon and have since adopted it
Likewise, @mrsnaildood brought up that dragonmark/slavemark ink is a super-permanent ink made by mixing dragon and human blood, and therefore dragons and humans fighting in the war and getting blood on each other would create permanent tattoo-like marks, which is SO fascinating and something I definitely subscribe to.
Hiccup does eventually get married, but it's for strictly political reasons. He has one biological kid and then adopts two more! I just feel like he'd really like kids. I also feel like he'd make a pretty good dad, seeing how well he managed to parent Toothless
Mermaids are in fact real. This one's random but Hiccup canonically wrote a book about mermaids so I vehemently believe they do exist in the httyd universe and that Hiccup met and studied them. I also like to think they're distantly related to dragons!
Toothless cat gecko. He purrs like a motorcycle and gives Hiccup head butts and rubs up against his legs or against his face if he's on Hiccup's shoulder. He also gets the zoomies and does biscuits which is REALLY ANNOYING because his claws are really sharp and shreds everything to ribbons. He also responds to pspsps but would NEVER admit it.
#wicked ur mind#i love thessseee#al chatters#httyd#httyd books#my art#Fishlegs carved the ocean to represent the waves that took him to Berk#Camicazi carved fish scales because ‘haha fish scales. fish legs. same thing really’#and hiccup thought a while. and then carved a braid pattern to represent his and Fishlegs friendship. bc I imagine they braid eachothers#hair and have since they were little
