Favourite Httyd book moments? Asking random people.

Thank god you said moments not moment. Despite my fav book being book 10 I think a lot of my highlights are actually in book 9.

1. The cliff side battle against Furious’ troops. This is a very unique action sequence for the series, where instead of Hiccup vaguely leading Cami, the dragons and Fishlegs through an action sequence, he’s instead commanding troops. I think this is the only time hiccup does so. It stands out as super unique compared to how action normally goes in the series, has some incredibly compelling visuals, and works as such a good part of the tone shift in 9 towards the concepts of war and leadership. It also really starts digging into the fact that the Vikings of the HTTYD world are a heavily militarized one, “a battle society”, as Cressida puts it. That militarisation has been kind of present throughout the entire series, but in a vague and not very accurate fashion. This part though really kind of engages in that concept in the context of like…organised military fighting for the first time in the series. Idk I think it’s just the perfect first major beat for the book and is incredibly well executed.

2. The sword competition, specially the fight between Hiccup and Stoick. The fucking PARALLELS of it all. The almost tongue in cheek awareness of it, the way this conflict and fight has been building and building and building this entire series, and it finally spills out into this emotionally devastating scene which is then followed by the extra hard gut punch of the runt reveal. I think this is maybe one of the best hiccup and stoick interactions in the entire series.

3. Stoick’s speech to hiccup in book 10. But more generally his character arc in this book. I LOVE what Cressida did with Stoick as the pro-status quo Liberal™️ and his conflict with his son, the revolutionary. Their ideological clash has always been a large part of their relationship but 9 and 10 really *go there*, delving into the political aspects of that clash and how Stoick is betrayed by his own trust in society. He’s a proud political leader being forced to view how he was wrong, how the world he was part of and engaged in was cruel and unjust, and is having to reckon with the bloody truth of how much needs to be destroyed and rebuilt to make it fair and just. It’s just UUUGHHHFHHGGG Stoick I love you Stoick.

These tentatively edge out like so many other scenes I love bc frankly this was so hard to decide.

As much as the "don't worry its not bl!" comments/post make me want to beat people with a bat we have to let them go. We have to let these people shake in fear and have some sort of moral attack by the chest scene. We have to let the weak die fast, only the strong will prevail and enjoy this show/anime like it was intended.

Also it may not have the bl tag anymore but it's still a queer story. The queerness and alienation are the literal spine of the story and you will deal with it

On a moshang kick but there's just something extremely compelling about the idea of Mobei Jun spending years expecting Shang Qinghua to betray him, getting impatient waiting for the axe to drop, deliberately creating opportunities for Shang Qinghua to betray him, still no betrayal happens, until eventually it gets to the point where Shang Qinghua has like, the fantastical demon king equivalent of Mobei Jun's credit card numbers and a joint account and free access to his bedroom and food and a great big cabinet full of poison and his detailed schedule and the exact time when he'll be bathing naked with no weapons under the moonlight at the one time every five years when all ice demons temporarily lose their powers for a full night and etc etc. Mobei Jun is doing trust falls (even though he doesn't know it) but Shang Qinghua just keeps catching him.

Until the whole lack of explicit communication and cultural differences thing explodes, and even then the big betrayal that finally happens is that Shang Qinghua saves Mobei Jun's life but then LEAVES HIM, he GOES AWAY, he doesn't even push Mobei into his own metaphorical abyss he just goes "this isn't worth putting up with anymore" and forces Mobei Jun to confront the fact that in his determination to be reassured he actually failed to prove himself to Shang Qinghua in return, which reduces Mobei Jun to a shattered wreck struggling to figure out how to fix it.

this fic has been a comfort read for me, i love the very entrenched POVs that is a signature of fahye's works, and wanted to do a bind that was just as classy as i find her fics to be. somehow you find a way to make my heart ache when i read all of your fics, fahye, and i fall for it every time. it's amazing. i hope you enjoy having this gift copy <3

This is not only my favourite ever fic, but my favourite ever book/story/wherever. I've come back to it so many times over the years and every time I absolutely adore it.

Tiny text is tiny because I wanted to make a text block that fit through my guillotine.

This was originally meant to be my "over the top/impractical cover design with rhinestones, but the more I thought about it the more I wanted something that wouldn't get damaged with use, and I didn't want to buy rhinestone application equipment for one project. I might still try it in the future though.

Chameleon vinyl is fun, edge painting with alcohol based metallic paint was a mistake but I was too impatient to go out and buy something non-alchohol based when this was already on my shelf. It's a little messy in places but not bad for a first attempt! I really want to learn proper edge gilding at some point.

"The Other Mountain" by nirejseki

I was thrilled to be able to bind this Wen Ruohan/Lan Qiren fic for @robininthelabyrinth. As you can see I stuck with Wen colors for the bind--Lan Qiren marries into the Wen sect, after all. I found this lovely red chiyogami paper that had a bit of a stylized cloud pattern going on and thought it would be perfect for the endpapers, and a bit of the cover decoration as well (it's also lining the inside of the slipcase). I carried that style of stylized cloud into the outside of the slipcase, and tried to echo it in the horizontal lines on the title page and chapter headers too.
