"Pops Lavelle"

"Get in the car now!"

Shouts Mrs Lavelle impatience clogging her throughts. Poppie (Pops) is taking one last look at herself in the mirror. She has auburn light curls and a singular sparkly gold nose stud, freckes kissing her nose and gold dangly earings in. She is giggling idely at her phone. Sexting this guy named Christian. A notification pings up its from Leyla. 'Hey girlie were in the same form again i'm excited to see you, i missed you this summer' Leyla smiled. A loud nock startles her at the door. It's Teddy her younger 4 foot brother whos just joined yr 7.

"Mums been waiting, hurry up!" he says sassily a big leather bag prodtruding comically behind him. Leyla gathers her red cheer bag and school bag and heads to the car. Thoughts of Christian blessing her thoughts. They had started seeing eachother that very summer beaches, house parties the whole shabang. And she rather selfishly negleted her best mates Leah (Aileah) and Ley (Leyla) to spend 'quality time with him' but we all know what that means.

Pops had to get her mind off her anxiety as she really struggled last year and it seemed that Christian was fixing her and truely cares for her at least. Pops bares a smile before sending another risky text and heads in the car her mother shooting daggers at her from the rear view mirror.

New School Day Adventure Shaina Tranquilino August 27, 2024

The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a soft, golden glow over the sleepy town as Annabelle stood in front of her new school. The building loomed large and unfamiliar, its red brick walls and tall windows holding the promise of the unknown. Her heart fluttered with a mix of nerves and excitement, the kind that comes with any fresh start. This was her first day at Oakwood High, and everything felt different from her old life in the city. The sounds of birds chirping and the distant hum of cars were a far cry from the bustling noise she was used to. Annabelle adjusted the straps of her backpack, took a deep breath, and stepped forward, her shoes crunching on the gravel path leading to the entrance.

Inside, the hallways were a maze of new faces and unfamiliar classrooms. Students clustered together in groups, laughing and chatting, while Annabelle felt like an outsider looking in. She gripped the map of the school tightly, scanning it for room 207—her homeroom.

As she walked, she caught snippets of conversations and caught glimpses of students decorating their lockers, slipping into their familiar roles and friendships. It felt as though everyone already belonged, except for her.

When she finally found room 207, the bell had just rung. She hesitated for a moment outside the door, then pushed it open. The classroom was filled with chatter, but it quieted as the teacher, a kind-looking woman with short, curly hair, welcomed everyone. Annabelle slipped into an empty seat at the back, trying to make herself as inconspicuous as possible.

"Welcome to a new year, everyone," the teacher began. "My name is Mrs. Hart, and I'm excited to get to know all of you. I know that starting a new school year can be nerve-wracking, especially if you're new here. But remember, this is a fresh start for all of us."

Annabelle felt a small sense of relief at Mrs. Hart's words. A fresh start. That's what she needed. She glanced around the room and noticed a girl with dark hair sitting next to her, doodling in the margins of her notebook. The girl looked up and caught Annabelle's eye, giving her a friendly smile.

"Hi, I'm Kelly," she whispered as Mrs. Hart continued talking.

"Annabelle," she replied, smiling back.

"First day here too?"

Annabelle nodded, feeling a little less alone.

As the day went on, Annabelle began to relax. In each class, she found herself speaking up more, asking questions, and even making a few more friends. She discovered that the other students were just as nervous as she was, and they were all looking for a place to belong.

By lunchtime, she and Kelly had found a group to sit with, and the laughter that filled the cafeteria was infectious. Annabelle realized that Oakwood High wasn't as intimidating as it had seemed that morning. The new beginning she had feared was actually full of possibilities, of friendships waiting to be made and stories yet to be written.

As the final bell rang, signaling the end of the first day, Annabelle walked out of the school with a lightness in her step. The golden light of the setting sun warmed her face, and she smiled to herself. She had taken the first step into her new life, and it felt like the beginning of something wonderful.

As the familiar tune of Billy Madison's iconic back-to-school song echoes in my mind, I'm transported to a time of innocence and excitement.

Back-to-school season has this magical ability to stir up emotions and take us down memory lane. The memories of those early school days, adorned in fresh outfits and a backpack full of untouched school supplies waiting to be used, remain etched in my heart. The simple joys of childhood!

Back then, each new school year felt like an opportunity for a clean slate, a chance to start new. It's fascinating how time has a way of creating stories that sometimes unravel into unexpected twists, pushing us towards unforeseen experiences.

My own journey, once marked by being labeled 'gifted' by the school board at the age of six, took turns I didn't anticipate. Hidden beneath the surface were the struggles I faced – battling ADHD and dealing with the aftermath of a traumatic experience that I'll get into in a future post. The school board saw potential to accelerate me a grade due to my intellect, but my attitude and behavior held me back. ADHD was something that wasn't often observed in the 90's. If it was, it was generally diagnosed in boys and then a prescription for Aderall was thrown at them. Instead of looking into the root cause of my "issues", I was labelled a "bad kid" and overlooked for the rest of my educational career.

Fast forward to the present, I stand at the intersection of the past and future, now a parent to a remarkable four year old who mirrors not only my looks but my own story of giftedness and ADHD. Thankfully, there has been a ton of research regarding ADHD over the years which has provided us with many different avenues to assist her with obtaining the tools she needs to achieve her goals. We were presented with a unique choice: to propel her ahead a grade or to embrace the world of French immersion. Why not seize the opportunity to nurture bilingualism? She spent the last 4 months of Kindergarten completing half days in a French immersion program and witnessing her courageously adapt to this challenge fills me with pride and hope for the journey ahead. French is her Father's first spoken language, and a language used by her family members on a daily basis. I am excited for her to learn more not only so she can understand the conversations her family has, but also for her to develop skills which will prove beneficial in her future endeavors.

Back-to-school isn't just about books and pencils; it is filled with a whirlwind of dance classes, gymnastics sessions, swim lessons, birthday bashes, and school festivities. The blend of excitement and stress in these moments places me in a whirlwind of emotions that reminds me how grateful I am for the life I live.

As the school bells ring in the rhythm of life's chaos, I find myself treasuring every moment of this existence. Motherhood has given the privilege of watching my daughter unfurl her wings, learning and growing with every sunrise. Motherhood, something I never thought I would be able to experience.

On the threshold of another school year, we're ready to embrace this new chapter……Wish us luck!

Iodine High School

"Cece obi"

Quiet gossips echo the school halways. Teenagers huddle in cliques emmiting an aura of judgment and pent up horn. Classic Iodine high. Cece opens her locker. Its filled with OCs shes drawn, photographs of her best mates Mavis and Aileah and in my opinion lameeee anime posters. She grabs a sketch book plus her pencil case.

A group of year 11 boys lollop down the bythe hallway towards her. Flownd is walking backwards explaing some rainbow six gameplay. (Blah blah blah). He's wearing a backwards red cap slightly placed on the side of his head to reveal his soft brown curls. Over his uniform hes got an oversized grey hoodie with the words blessed in large bubble writing on the back. He has on a long gold chain draping onto his tie and a single gold ring. A grin planted on his face. Cece is checking her hair in the circular mirror of her locker. Placing a disobedient twist back to its side part. She has on chunky gold hoops that compliment her thick black frames; and a golden star grill on her left canine.

CRASH!

Flownd turns around imensly looking at his victim on the ground. Cece's glasses has been whacked off her face and her head had whacked the locker on her way down. She sits there bewildered. What a start to the first day back at Iodine high am i right.

'I AM SOO SORRY!' Flownd pleads. His eyebrows borrow looking down at Cece who's rubbing her temples.

'Its fine,' Cece heads for her classes

'Please allow me' Flownd begs reaching her glasses and gathering her stuff in a neat pile. His friends miraculously disappereaing behind him.

'Thanks.' Cece utters unamused placing her glasses back on her nose

'Here,' Flownd takes a twist and places it where it belonged.

"Heh you looked a little funny,' Flownd laughs. Cece's eyes dart to the floor her chest feeling warm. Flownd and Cece seemed to talk all the time via socials but never in real life for some reason it was nice to see he wasnt ashamed of being seen with her or something.

'I got to get going.' She says quietly

'Bai have a good day!' Flownd exclaims down the hallway as she walks away to form.

'AYE CeCe LET ME HIT THAT!' shouts an athlete as she walks past. And, as she always does, choses not hear it. Her face hidden under her sketch book. Flownd scrunches his nose, his fist belt up in a ball.
