First of all, I freaking love that part with John Smith getting shot and her seeing him off and he's in pain and got bandages wrapped around his chest. So good. Great first whumperfly moment for you!

Okay mine was, I think, the episode of Cardcaptor Sakura titled "Double Take". I was like 8 years old and I got whumperflies when Toya (called Tori in the American dubbed version I saw as a kid) fell off a cliff and broke his leg. That was the first time I remember liking something specifically because of whump. This was my first experience with anime, my defining whump loving moment, and I was obsessed with the show as a kid. Obsessed.

I’d have to say Tangled at age 9, only cause I can put an age and date to that lmao. Specifically the scene where Flynn goes to rescue Rapunzel, climbs up her hair and jumps into the tower only to see Gothel has her bound and gagged against a back column

Runner up would be the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe movie, when Edmund’s tied to a tree and gagged awaiting the White Witch’s execution of him :). Runner up cause I can’t put a specific age or date to this, so I have literally no idea if this was before or after the first scene

Curious about how other people’s moods affect their whump enjoyment. I’m not someone who wants light and fluffy media when I’m feeling bad—I want dark and whumpy stuff regardless of how I’m feeling—but the whumperflies definitely come more easily when I’m feeling good. It’s similar to creativity that way: the happier I feel, the easier it is for me to be creative (and the more I enjoy seeing characters suffer).

So when I was a child I had an Xbox 360. One of the games I had was Fable II. One of the main quests was called The Spire, where the hero would go to some palace thing.

Once the hero woke up they had a shock collar and if you disobeyed orders you'd get zapped, among other things. I had no idea why I liked that quest so much and I chalked it down to "omg lore"

Needless to say I now know why I liked that quest so much.
