alright, this one's a little more silly
#this chapbook needs 15 poems#I have 11 finished #and they're in narrative order! so the first poem (this) comes before Belphie's birth#and then we go through him falling sick#and RECOVERING!!! 💃#I'm a little unsure if this one's as strong though.....I feel like the best ones are in the middle of the book#(which is bad if I'm trying to sell it to a publisher bc they might just stop reading)#belphegor

Do you like Dark Science Fantasy, unconventional protagonists, and the storytelling of games like Half-Life?
Well, I just published my first novella! If you can spare a few dollars, I'd be happy to read your thoughts!
It's about a dystopia, a fairy, and Monica, the emotionless girl tying them all together.

Hey everybody! I wrote a book! It comes out on September 17th 2024.
It’s a magical realism thriller anthology of four short stories and five poems! Each stand alone short story is set in a different season. Each story says something different about the human condition.
In “Dottie’s Final Day,” a reaper comes to Dottie Lyre in her garden. What does an elderly mother choose to do on her last day alive?
“The Door,” appears suddenly and disappears just as fast. What’s on the other side? Why won’t the door sit still? Jane’s going to find out.
Please share this with anyone you think might be interested! You can preorder the e-book on Amazon now for .99c and the paperback will be available SEPTEMBER 17th for $10.99! The price will go up a few dollars September 28th but I’ll also be getting a larger percentage of the sale.
I’ve been writing my entire life and this is my first published book so pleaseeee if you are reading this, this book is for anyone middle school to grave. It’s only like 142 pages and the cover is really pretty if you would rather just have a pretty trophy and leave me a review on Amazon like you read it and it was awesome then I also love you.

Top 5 obscure light vintage novels! (Not sure if my previous ask got eaten, but also curious about this one specifically)
The strictest definition of what I consider "obscure light vintage novels" requires a book to meet a lot of criteria:
Published before 1960
Not recommended to me by anyone I know personally (including on tumblr)
Doesn't have a fancy Oxford-Classics-type edition with an introduction. (And none of the author's other books are well-known enough to have one)
Has a realistic setting
Ideally written by a woman or centered around a female main character
Which means that very few books fit this list. But of those few, here are my top five.
Desire by Una Silberrad: Flawed but fascinating Edwardian novel about an eccentric heiress who meets a soulful author and eventually winds up working for him when she loses her money and he inherits his father's pottery business. Fascinating characters, amazing romance, lots of interesting themes. I'm also going to count the author's other novels in this category, because she's come to epitomize "obscure light classic" for me. The Good Comrade is a much frothier novel with some great characters, and Curayl is highly flawed, but its silver-tongued hero lives rent-free in my head.
The Ark by Margot Benary-Isbert: I finished this book less than twenty-four hours ago (so I could include it on this list). It's a 1953 German novel set in 1947, about a refugee family building a home after the end of the war. It reads like, if you can believe it, a cozy post-apocalyptic novel. These people are living through some terrible things, but they make the best of things and manage to find joy. It's chock-full of fascinating details about life in post-war Germany, and reminds you that the people on that side of the war were human too, losing people and places they loved, and doing their best to live in terrible times. There are some superstitious elements later on that I wasn't crazy about, but otherwise I adored this story.
The Romance of a Shop by Amy Levy: Novel from the 1880s about four sisters who open a photography studio to support themselves after their father's death. Extremely underwritten (one of the girls meets an old flame and marries him between chapters), but a very easy, pleasant read with interesting historical details, and some nice sisterly relationships that remind me just a bit of Little Women meets Oscar Wilde.
The Heir of Redclyffe and Countess Kate by Charlotte Mary Yonge: Books by one of the bestselling authors of the Victorian age who's completely forgotten today. Both get too preachy at times, but make up for it by having amazing characters. The first one is a family saga about cousins caught up in an old feud, and the second is like if Anne Shirley suddenly found out she was a countess.
The Rosary by Florence Barclay: The bestselling novel of, like, 1920. It gets very melodramatic, but I was also surprised at how grounded and witty the characters were. I remember very little about it, but I have fond memories of the reading experience, and it earns a place on this list because when I want to find an "obscure vintage light novel", on some level I'm thinking I want to find a book like this.
I know you didn't ask, but I find myself wanting to list five novels that don't quite meet the strict criteria above, but are close enough that I want to highlight them.
The Dean's Watch and The Rosemary Tree by Elizabeth Goudge: Goudge isn't exactly obscure in this section of tumblr (which is why I heard of her in the first place), but she's obscure enough that a lot of her books are out-of-print or otherwise hard to get, and these two in particular are among the best books I've ever read.
The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery: Montgomery is extremely well-known, and this book has an ever-growing and very devoted cult following, so it's not exactly obscure, but it's much less well-known than most of her other books. A deep cut, if you will. It fits perfectly within the light vintage novel category, and has long been one of my favorite novels of all time.
Lady Audley's Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon: It's got an Oxford Classics (or similar imprint) edition, and is well-known as one of the very first sensation novels, but it's not exactly known among people who don't deep-dive into Victorian literature. I read this last month and loved it. It's a cozy sensation novel with an amazing main character, great atmosphere, and a plot that manages to grip you even while not much happens.
Mrs. Miniver by Jan Struther: It's not exactly obscure if it has a movie adaptation, but from what I know, the movie basically ignores the book, which isn't that well-known today. Charming slice-of-life from the very early days of WWII England.
Helen by Maria Edgeworth: Not exactly beloved, and Edgeworth isn't exactly obscure, but this is a lesser-known novel that fits well within this category. The first half had some moments that were so dull I considered not finishing, but the second half was gripping enough that I can mention it as a nice, obscure surprise of a book.
#answered asks#books#it turns out there were several books i wanted to feature in the second list#that weren't old enough to feature under my very generous definition of 'classic'#the kitchen madonna is from 1967#i was *sure* the letzenstein chronicles were a mid-century series that had gone out of print and was republished by bethlehem books#only to find that they were *first* published in 1997#i considered mentioning 'daddy-long-legs' and 'dear enemy' as charming obscure light vintage novels despite their severe ick factors#but it turns out that i couldn't forgive the eugenics or the grooming

Azz will write his memoirs as the right hand of the Demon King Iruma, and the book will have to be sold with a huge warning about historical inaccuracies.
#Yes this book was written by Asmodeus Alice himself#And yes#he was the hand of the demon king Sullivan Iruma#one of his closest followers and companions#but it did NOT happen this way according to various sources of the time#“Why are they publishing Azz-Azz fanfic?” Clara Valac another of the 13 crowns and also a close friend of King Iruma#had said the first time this book was released#Though her version of the facts was not very reliable either#mairuma

we’re moving forward with a publisher 😤 just gotta get all the terms worked out, and then it can be signed & we’ll do the whole announcement thing
#they potentially want me to illustrate the chapter headings and the cover#which I am SO PSYCHED ABOUT#I will literally break my arms trying to make this art as good as possible#the delay on moving forward was that a few other publishers wanted time to consider the book and potentially make a counter-offer#but in the end nobody bid more than the first publisher to make a monetary offer#so we’re going with the first one#book

Dear Hair,
I cut you as punishment.
Force you to stare
As pieces of your body
Float to the ground
Where we are both bound
And you screech and screech
In agony
You dare ask me why
When you had spent
Most of your time
With your long tendrils
Coiled and knotted
Sometimes so tight
I found bits of you between my
My pearly whites
But you grow and grow
Even with a blade to your throat.

cw: Bakugou dies but comes back to life, “comes back wrong” trope, implied fighting, angst
When Bakugou died, you’re not sure how you went on living. Grief had taken over your life, sat you in the passenger side while it cruised off the highway into icy waters. And even then, you couldn’t find the energy to drown.
It’s why there’s a sudden uptick of energy when you’re promised to have him back. Some top scientists contact you months after his death, tell you to hurry down to the headquarters labs, come and rejoice for what you’re about to witness. And you’re horrified, to say the least.
“This isn’t my husband.” Are your first words when you walk in, watch the figure on the other side of the glass examine its own hands. It looks like your husband but—but his hair isn’t the right shade of blond all over. His nose bridge had a slight bump after a scuffle with a villain. He had a scar on his hand but—but it never looked like it was to sew a pinky beside the other fingers.
“Is that really my husband?” You ask next in disbelief, slowly entering the room. Bakugou’s head snaps up, his eyes a little brighter than you remember but—they hold so much emotion. So much memory, so much panic, so much guilt.
“I left you.” He mutters, his voice raspy and ragged, and you wonder if it’ll always be like this now. It makes you cry a little harder than it should, but you only embrace each other. He’s cold and his shoulders don’t hold the same mass and his back doesn’t carry the same scars. There’s one, jagged and rough, running down his back, and you think, you think that’s where they slipped a new spine in.
“Welcome back home.” You tell him, weeks after meeting him again, new and not totally—Katsuki. He’s stiff and he doesn’t immediately take off his boots when he enters, and it worries you. Makes you think if you’ve just let a stranger into your home, one that has stolen your dead husbands face. Makes you wonder if he’ll be as loving as Katsuki once was, or if he’ll become your monster looming over you with the guilt of not being able to rest anymore.
“I’ve missed you so much.” You whisper against his mouth one night, a little while after he’s moved back. You don’t know why you lay under him, why you let him nestle himself inside of you, why you let him hold you against his chest. Katsuki always ran his hands over your cheeks and neck whenever he held you like this, but this…man, only holds himself up with his hands resting beside your head. It’s alien, how he looks at you, how his hips are methodically measured with every thrust, how he kisses you every 8 seconds. You wonder if he’s more robot than Frankenstein monster.
“Why did you come back to me like this?” You ask him one night, barricaded in the bathroom away from him. You can hear his sobs on the other side, his pleading to be let in. He tells you he never wanted to come back if he had to be like this, that he’s sorry, please let him in, he misses the warmth of your skin, he’s never been so cold before, he’s never liked the cold.
“Is this considered cheating?” You ask yourself aloud one night, when Bakugou is forced back to the lab when he becomes too…un-Bakugou. To sleep with a man that is your husband in every way but? Your husband has been dead for a year now, and yet you stroke the chin of the man that tries so hard to be him everyday, but fails so miserably at it every time.
“I’ll come back to you right this time.” Bakugou promises to you when he’s strapped down to leave for the lab and before he’s sedated. But you don’t believe him—you never did. Your husband is dead, and this animated corpse has been nothing but a cheap mockery of everything you’ve lost and something you will never truly get back.
#I was writing this and then checked my dash and saw another post about this#and felt so guilty and almost didn’t post it aidjdkfj#but I love this trope too much to delete it!!!!!#I’ve written about this in my published book before and it’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever written#there’s just such a deep heartache about having to grieve someone#and then the grieving process being interrupted by the one you lost#and battling with their death even though you still look at them everyday again#but it’s just not right?? it’s not the same??#they have the same face (kinda) but it’s truly not hem#not them* heck#it reminds me of a convo I had in a psych class about making a new cloned version of yourself#where the question was ‘is the clone/new version still you? or are they an entirely new person now?’#and at first I said they’re still me you know? they have my face n body n memories#but my prof told me no!! after they have been cloned they are sentient and are now their own person making new memories apart from you#and I thought that was soooo interesting and it makes me fall in love w this trope every time#you’re my person but only a version. you’re who I love but a newer person. you’re not them. you’re everything I’ve missed about them#so heartbreaking I LOVE ITTTT#sorry I’m rapping it’s the sleep meds kicking in#okay bai#bakugou treats! 🍬#—new treat in the streets! 🍫
