One of the fascinating things about addiction (intellectually, not to experience, obviously) is that the pathways involved in addiction (famously dopamine but others too) are also the pathways involved in connecting to each other. Feeling good is connected to feeling a sense of safety and belonging.
Humans are mostly social creatures. Broadly speaking, most of us want to be around other people, and rejection hurts. Bad. If we get rejected, those dopamine pathways make us crave belonging, and that pain motivates us to do whatever we can to get back in the social circle, to belong again and feel safe. Sound familiar?
It's no coincidence that people who are lonely and rejected are more at risk for addiction. Dopamine-mimicking drugs can briefly give us that sense of safety and belonging when we don't have it. At their best, drugs provide us a brief respite, a feeling of safety that can carry us through when we can't get it (with abusive families or pandemics, for example). At their worst, drugs are a distraction from facing the ways we've hurt other people and doing the hard work to actually belong with people again. Often with addiction, it's both at the same time.
(There is lots of evidence out there about the connection between addiction and belonging. A great entry point is Johann Hari's TED talk called Everything You Know About Addiction is Wrong.)
Moash is particularly vulnerable to wanting to keep Odium's gift for both reasons - he's isolated and lonely, and he wants to avoid thinking about the people he's hurt. He misses the camaraderie of Bridge Four back in Oathbringer, even before his new 'family' of Graves and co are all killed by the Fused. Moash needs to belong, and Odium sucks him in. He's given jobs and gifts and even a new name to show how he is welcomed there. But he's not safe there like he was with Bridge Four, and deep down he knows it. Odium's gift of 'peace' is enough to distract him - to quiet his doubts, and squash any motivation he might have to escape from a very bad situation.
One of the the things that I've noticed is how addicting Odium's powers/boons are. Obviously, we have the Thrill, where people get addicted off the high of killing people. We have the Heart of Revel, where it entices you to indulge.
But I haven't seen much of Moash's addiction to Odium's "peace." Like, I've read it as Moash is drugged. Odium's boon is literally him taking away guilt and hurt and pain. I've never had alcohol or drugs, and a big plan of mine is to never have any, but from the way i've heard and understood it, that's what drugs do. They take away emotions that you don't want to have and artificially create "happy" ones. And then once they wear off, emotions crash in, and you body craves the high from that substance, they don't want to be feeling these "bad emotions."
That's literally what happened to Moash.

So if every object has a soul, an intention of what they are, or the way they are seen by someone in the physical realm.
Would an let's say an addicted Radiant. Likely an elsecaller or a Light Weaver, those who are closest to the cognitive realm, listen to their addiction talking back to them? Does a bottle of wine wish to be consumed? And a piece of Firemoss? Does the effect of abstinence make them unconsciously hear it plead to be used ?

honestly im glad humans are the main target for erotica because elves have been sexualized for far too long
🍯treebarkhookhandwagondoor
part of the halfling sexual liberation movement was to embrace sexualizsation because we were treated as undesirables under the Valief'taur Period that now its weird to see elves suddenly turn face and claim that sexualizing anyone is bad

Stormlight Archive: Wind and Truth Thoughts and Theories
Lots of spoilers below.
Kaladin - I love the herald thing. I think it retroactively makes @nevertheless-moving's AU of Kaladin being time traveler mistaken for a herald even funnier, and it was already hilarious. I am dying to see fic where Kaladin-as-herald DOES time travel, someone DOES assume this, and they are actually correct, but not in the way they think. They start guessing historical names, and Kaladin has to go, "Well, I guess Jezrien is closest, but it's not quite like - " and everyone runs with it.
I am hoping for SO MANY reveals/interactions when he returns in the next series. I want him to go flying in to save Adolin from something in an 11th hour rescue and Adolin to have that "You're ALIVE?" moment. I want him to reconnect with his baby brother. I want Szeth to try to murder Ishar to avenge Kaladin's death only for Kaladin to have to intervene.
I love it.
Adolin - I love his arc in this book, and I love how his habit of talking to his weapons/armor has paid off such huge dividends. Slightly concerned about the firemoss; having seen what addiction did to his father, I hope he'll resist that path, but it does worry me a little.
Shallan - I'm assuming she won't manage to return in the interim between series, so this is looking like a long separation. At least she can talk to Adolin?
. . . her nausea/hand to her stomach thing is entirely understandable from emotional context, but given *tropes,* I'm kind of thinking she might be pregnant.
Szeth - I enjoyed his arc, and I loved learning he got married; I'm hoping he's very happy.
Gavinor - I'm betting his storyline and Lift's are going to be heavily entertwined in the next series since Lift feels partially responsible for him going through the rift in the first place. I'm also betting his storyline will ultimately end positively, as a counterpart to his father's tragedy.
Odium: You know that cut Hamilton song? "You have invented a new kind of stupid/a let all the animals out of the zoo kind of stupid/a you really did not think this through kind of stupid/Listen?"
Yeah, that's how I feel about his decision to recruit the Blackthorn and I am delighted.
It is 100% in character, given what he tries to do with Dalinar and Jasnah throughout the book. It is also, I think, a fatal mistake.
He has recruited the Blackthorn. A being with all the memories of his other self. A being with all the potential of his other self.
All of it. Including the bits that grew to fight Odium.
Navani is still alive. His sons are still alive. Does Odium really think they'll let this last remainder of Dalinar just . . . trot merrily off to war without trying to stop him?
Retribution ACKNOWLEDGES that the perception of Dalinar is what shapes the Blackthorn. Public perception that largely paints him as Retribution wants, sure . . . but Dalinar, prior to his death, become a tragic hero known for fighting Odium and RELEASED A BOOK WITH HIS WHOLE LIFE STORY.
Does Retribution really think he can keep that public perception pointed in the right direction forever?
The Blackthorn doesn't even make him any promises. He just says that fighting is "what I do."
He is 100% going to turn on Retribution eventually, and it is going to be glorious.
Other thoughts:
Dova is going to be a problem eventually.
I like the time bubble aspect; that'll let the events of Mistborn trilogy three play out before we catch up with Roshar.
I think the next Roshar series is going to be a massive crossover event for the cosmere.
I adored the musical chairs aspect of the final fight in Azir.
Loved the reprise of "Honor is dead, but I'll see what I can do."
(I also love the wind's little "Please don't hate me" to Kaladin.)
Definitely convinced that the overall plot of the cosmere is going to be "So we shouldn't have killed Adonalsium, now we need to put the pieces back together. This is exactly what I wanted, so I'm thrilled!
Oh! And given the emphasis in the book on the dangers of Shards turning their backs on planets and their people for too long, I think Retribution is going to find his distraction is going to cost him. He made a lot of promises in this book . . . and then did huge damage to the ecosystem and the landscape, massive psychological damage by hiding the sun, and vanished, utterly failing to enforce whatever social plans he had.
People are going to be TICKED.
Which of course provides opportunities.
Especially when the two territories NOT affected by Retribution are right there, enjoying the sun.
(Jasnah, returning for round two of debate for Fen: I can guarantee you that neither I nor any of my descendants are going to block out the sun.
Fen: Will you just let us sign the paper already?)

Me: Sometimes the fantasy naming feels a little silly, like how am I supposed to take it seriously when this character is addicted to a drug called firemoss
My friend (who does not read Stormlight): I mean would you rather this fantasy character was just snorting cocaine?
Me: … you’re right. Firemoss it is then

The Stillness Before
Words of Radiance re-read
Mmmm, I may have conflated some Tyn/Shallan conversations in the last chapter for ones that happen here. But that’s mostly immaterial.
(I listen as I’m winding down for bed/falling asleep, so sometimes I have to repeat sections and forget exactly where chapter breaks happen)
Starting back at the beginning of this chapter, there are some curious parallel details between Kaladin’s bit and Shallan’s.
Bridge 4 notes that Teft is missing —> Tyn is doing firemoss
An ardent shows up, wanting to draw Bridge Four —> Shallan talks about her sketchbook.
Speaking of that mystery ardent—what was that all about? It seems way too specific to be an inconsequential throwaway, but I can’t imagine who that was or why they were there. I considered both Kabsal, the pretend ardent, and all the corrupted ones back in Kholinar, but there’s no supporting evidence for either theory. I can’t even think of other notable artist characters.

Dear Tracy,
Imagine, if you will, a world of stone and storms. A world threatened by an ancient hateful evil that brings only Void and Desolation. Thunderous creatures that hew themselves from stone to break civilisation into rubble. Shadowy creations, black as midnight, that infiltrate and kill. Beings that pulse with a violet energy that draws light in rather than emitting it. What stands between this force of Odium and humanity, ha?
Knights that can walk on walls and run with the wind; Knights that can sketch an army into existence by weaving light; Knights that can call other possibilities into existence, that can make stone into steel or smoke. Ten Orders of Knights that burn with a Radiant light like the Storm’s own lightning. Knights Radiant.
I can already see you putting them on a pedestal. But the truth is, they’re not more than human because of their abilities. Each Knight Radiant’s… knighthood… begins with the Bond. The Nahel. A person and a sentient, Greater Spren. A person and a Splinter of the power of larger Shards—a little splinter of gods, of divinity—that embodies certain concepts, such as Honor or the Patterns that underlie reality.
The Bond requires a willing person and a willing Spren. But it also requires something else: cracks in the soul for the Nahel to fit into. Trauma. Every Knight Radiant has been through some form of Damnation, some form of… of Distortion, hell. Whatever concept translates most easily. The loss of a brother, a crippling addiction to firemoss… abusive parents… They did not earn the bond because of this trauma. As far as I know, it was mostly happenstance, being at the right places at the right times.
The trauma did not make them better people, either, contrary to some people’s perceptions about pain and strife. Ten spears go to battle and nine shatter; the last remaining has not been forged by the strife and the chaos and the pain, it is just the one that survived. That lone spear may have survived with scratches on its haft, or with a blunted head. It may well have survived by a hair. It was not made stronger, it just survived. So it is for us all, Radiant or not.
I am a Knight Radiant. I am of the Sixth Order, the Lightweavers, whose patron Herald is Shalash. I am one of those who can write an illusory army into existence and convince cold stone to become flame. I have been broken as you have.
The cracks in the soul anchor the Nahel, but it is their—our—willingness to heal that maintains it. We want to become better people, and our bond with our Spren and the Oaths we swear facilitate that. But we’re still dealing with what hurt us, even then. The wind-running sergeant who fell into addiction still deals with his cravings. The light-weaving artist still deals with the pain of her childhood.
I am still dealing with the pain of forcing myself into silence and isolation, still dealing with the irrational feeling that I deserve to be hurt. I do not deserve this pain. It did not forge me; I just survived it. Neither do you deserve yours.
My point is: even your heroes in shimmering armour have dealt with terrible things that have hurt them. And while they may shine with Radiance, they have dealt with and are still dealing with the pain that they were put through, just like you. While that Radiance—however you define that—may feel far off, someday, others may look at you and see it wreath you in its blue-white mist.
Remember: You do not deserve your pain. You do not deserve your wretched mother’s voice ringing in your skull long after she’s gone from your life. Have faith in yourself. Have faith in your friends. Friends help, trust me. Don’t listen to the mean anons. If you need anything, advice, help, whatever—just ask.
Life Before Death,
-Shallahi

i… … … don’t know what to say…. … .. .
but i do understand…..
thank you.
