Most Common Questions about Cremation and Their Answers
The past two decades have seen an immense rise in the concept of services, so much so that funeral homes are also now highlighting this as a premium service they offer. People use this service more than burial or any other method of disposing of the body as it is less time-consuming and less harmful to the environment. There are different questions in mind related to cremation services that people have no idea of home to ask for answers.
Tumblr media
Cremation Faqs What Is a Cremation?
An essential part of funeral homes services, cremation is the process of reducing the human body using high heat and flame. However, it is not the final disposition, and in some countries, it is also not considered a type of funeral.
Tumblr media
Is A Casket Needed?
If funeral homes directors advocate the use of caskets, you should immediately look for other funeral homes because caskets are not needed at all for this service. However, you can use an alternative container that can be made of wood or cardboard, and also, there is an option of not using a container.
Is Embalming Required?
Strictly 'no', and it is the responsibility of funeral homes to guide you that it is against the law for them to use this process or advocate it for you.
Tumblr media
Can The Body Be Viewed Without Embalming?
Yes, funeral homes and crematories definitely allow family members to view the deceased for the final time prior to cremation.
What If The Family Wants To Witness The Cremation?
This request can be forwarded to funeral home directors, and they will have no other alternative than to allow the family to witness the process. They can be around the cremation chamber where the body is placed and see the process till the end.
Tumblr media
Can An Urn Brought Into The Church?
Protestant churches allow people to bring the urn during the memorial services, and also catholic churches allow the remains to be present during the memorial mass.
What Can Be Done With The Cremains?
The cremains of the body are pulverised after the cremation process, given a form of powder, and handed over to the family. They are responsible for what can be done, but state laws also come into play. You can bury the cremains in the garden or interred in a columbarium or kept at home or scattered in a field or some river nearby, of course, with the authority's permission.

DP + DC Writing Prompt
Prior to officially starting their research fully on ghosts, Jack and Maddie had to work elsewhere to get the funds needed (plus, they needed the money to take care of their six-year old daughter, Jazz). So, they went to the company that would pay them the most:
LexCorp.
It started off alright but over time, it became a bit more… insidious. They finally had enough shortly after being added to Lexcorp’s cloning research, when they were assigned to terminate a clone for failing to show signs of ‘Kryptonian physiology’. After documenting that the clone was terminated and cremated, they handed in their letters of resignation and left that night to disappear into an obscure town in Illinois called Amity Park…
Taking with them their daughter Jazz and their ‘four-year old’ son, Daniel.
Note: The idea behind this is ‘what if the reason Danny is so strong isn’t because he’s half ghost… what if it’s because he’s half alien?’

Creating vampire spawn involves some degree of planning really. The more I think about it the more I'm pretty sure Faerûn's funerary industries should be the battleground of a quiet espionage-based war as necromaners and undead try to insert their own servants into it without getting caught by the churches of the death gods. I'm also wondering what kind of anti-undead measures undertakers are trained in:
Doomguide: 'Well we normally keep the corpse for at least 48 hours to give it all its last rites.'
Definitely-Not-A-Vampire: 'I, uh, need it done faster.'
Doomguide: 'Oh? Like before next sundown...?' :)
Definitely-Not-A-Vampire-About-To-Get-Smote: '...uhhhh-'
-
• First you need to be able to murder your target without getting caught. If you don't take the body with you then you probably need to cover up the rather obvious cause of death, what with your victim now being a bloodless corpse with bite marks in their neck.
• Then you need to bury them in soil, and quickly because if they're not buried before next sundown then they'll just be dead, and you don't have all day to fuss over this as you're only active for the few hours of darkness. Hopefully you've got competent and loyal mortal servants to puck up the slack for you in daytime hours.
• You need to make sure they're not buried in consecrated ground, and if the graveyard is owned by a church you won't even be able to access the property (and several faiths - like Lathanderites and Kelemvorites - are liable to go out of their way to ensure gravesites are under their protection to keep your murdered victims have their final rests undisturbed; safe from enslavement at your hsnds).
This was probably easier prior to the 1350s, when Myrkul was Lord of the Dead, since he was fine with undeath. Vampires spawned post-1350s probably had a harder time.
• If they're getting a funeral you need to make sure the usual customs of laying protections on the coffin to prevent the occupant from being cursed with undeath don't happen. That's not suspicious at all, although I suppose you could just dominate everyone involved in the process, which may be a few or many people to hunt down and control in only a few hours. Assuming the business is open and works that fast. Also Kelemvorites are heavily involved with the funerary industries, so again, good luck post-1350s I hope your mortal pawns are competent.
• If you're in a city like Baldur's Gate you're either facing a long walk out of the city and back in to visit the graveyards outside the city walls - transporting a corpse - or you need to explain why you don't want them cremated. Priests at the Rose Portal shrine might like to know why.
• Basically, either own a private graveyard or just bury them in the back garden. It's infinitely easier.
• Unless you plan on making the spawn sleep in their graves where you buried them, don't forget to gather some of their grave dirt to make a bed for them in the house.

Death, dying and funerals in the Netherlands (pt 2)
The part in which we discuss options
My dad died this monday and as it turns out: funeral planning takes a lot of time. This part will go into more detail about your options of what can be done with your body. And also why one may want to subject their funeral director to police-level interrogation. My dad's final trips.
Part 1
So, same tw as part 1 on all of this: cancer, death, dying, corpses, handling corpses in various ways, funerals, undertakers, huge sums of money, insurance company (derogatory), religion
So where will the body go?
So, your loved one has died. You got to give them their final care and they are now "opgebaard" (ready for viewing). Now it is time to choose how to "dispose" of the body. There are several options you can choose. Before I continue with my dad's story, it's good to tell you a bit about what each involves:
Body donation
It is possible to choose to donate your body to science. If you go for this option, the body will be picked up within 24h of death to be taken to wherever donated bodies go. Before that, it is possible to spend time with the body and say your goodbye's. My grandma's sister opted for this. There was no final service.
Cremation
You can also have your body burnt. This happens at indoor crematoria. The funeral service is done prior to the cremation as Dutch law requires the ashes to stay at the crematorium for 30 days after cremation. My grandparents on my dad's side went for this. Both times we had a service at the crematorium. Songs were played, memories recounted and poems were read. The services were non-religious in this case. I remember my grandpa had a sea shanty play. After the service there was food either at the crematorium or at family. Coffee and a snack or some soup is common. The ashes can later be kept in an urn or scattered. You may also bury them in an "urn grave".
Burial
Burial is where some people may get surprised. In the Netherlands, "eternal rest" is not a given. In most cemeteries, you don't buy a plot, you lease one. After the initial period expires, the grave will be cleared so it can be used for someone else. There are two types of rental graves: algemeen (general) and particulier (private). With an "algemeen graf" the cemetery determines how long your loved one can stay in there. Often 20 or 30 years. Extending the lease is oftentimes not possible. When the lease passes, the grave will be cleared. Private graves also tend to start at 20 or 30 years but family can choose to keep extending the grave lease if they wish. Urn graves are the same in this.
Dig up that grave
When a grave gets cleared, there are several things that can be done with the remains: they could be reburied deeper (if possible). They can be cremated and the ashes given to family. They can be reburied in another grave chosen (and paid for) by family or they can be reburied in a common grave (aka: the big grave, some may call it a mass grave). Either way, exhuming a grave is not an ordeal legally speaking, it's just a part of life and death. The Netherlands is a small country with limited grave space and so we have to be efficient.
Eternal rest
Sometimes rental graves can be hard on people. Will you choose to renew the grave of your child or father who died way too young? It is not gonna bring them back and it is a big chunk of money, especially if your funds are low. Is it really worth it to extend the geave lease of people you never knew? Fortunately, nowadays there is a way to never have to worry about this: natural burial.
At a natural burial ground, you pick a grave in the middle of nature. The grave often gets a temporary wooden marker. Once it has decomposed, you might be able to get a new marker, but after that one's gone, the grave is unmarked and can only be found via GPS coordinates. After all the graves on the burial ground have been filled, it will get turned over to Natuurmonumenten (natural monuments) who will take care of the area and ensure that it stays pristine and undisturbed. This means that graves will not be dug up. The bodies are left to decompose naturally in the soil. Sometimes in a coffin, sometimes in a shroud and their relatives will never have to make a decision about the grave lease.
This is what my parents chose. They went to a natural burial ground and picked a plot where they can be buried together on top of one another. It is a good fit for my dad, who always loved to be out in nature. I'm glad they got to choose together. Though I do hope I won't have to bury my mom anytime soon.
But what's with this insurance stuff?
Oh, insurance, I could probably dedicate entire posts to how much of a pain dealing with our insurance/funeral director has been at times. Dutch funeral insurance often takes the form of a sum of money to spend on a funeral. You can use it to pay to buy or lease a grave, but since my parents already paid for theirs, the insurance fee is used for things like cards, transport, renting the ice plate, renting space to keep the body and catering. Yup, catering. It is also possible to get a package. Grave/cremation + all needed services or a combination thereof (grave/cremation + a sum of money to spend on other funeral stuff).
Between life and death: corpse hauling
So this is where my dad's story gets absurd. So far, my dad's body has been in basically all the places you can store a body (for viewing and just storage).
First, we kept him at home. We didn't want to keep him there for too long though, as we didn't think he would've appreciated it (he was never one to confront death). He died monday in the early morning and was picked up by the hearse tuesday late in the afternoon.
Them he was brought to the crematorium's cooling. We were not allowed to follow. We found that out just as he had left the house.
Those 90 FUCKING EUROS
Wait, the crematorium? Didn't you go for burial? Well yes, the reason we had him transferred there is that we thought that should we have him transferred there, we would have access to a so-called 24h room. Turns out that wasn't the case. The crematorium doesn't have a 24h room and we'd have to pay 90 FUCKING EUROS PER VISIT! We were not informed about this nor about that a "visit" is only 45 minutes, needs to be requested via the funeral director and that the crematorium apparently doesn't work with digital systems or something, because appointments may only be made during working hours as the people who put them in the agenda are not there later in the day!
I repeat: 90 FUCKING EUROS to be in a room with a corpse for 45 minutes. For that money I can buy a museum card, spend the entire year looking at corpses daily, bog body, mummy, skeleton, plenty of choice and still have enough money left to buy a sandwich.
Needless to say, we were Not Happy. She did fix it fairly quickly by getting him transferred to a 24h room the next day, but yeah, that's another car ride, another corpse transfer, more costs. My dad was being driven all over town I tell ya
But .. how?
Alright, the funeral director was set at the table and we were talking about planning the funeral (more about that next post), at some point she made an offhand comment about if we wanted to view the body. We said yes. So she was like"okay, so I'll add a mourning visit" and that was it.
She did not explain that it would be a 45 min visit and that if we wanted more visits it'd be more money. I get it costs money. After all the workers have to get the body in and out of the cooling, into the room for a viewing, keep that room clean, keep the refrigeration running etc, but it would have been nice to get informed before we made that uninformed choice we did.
We thought (based on my BIL's experiences with his family being viewed outside the house) that his body would be put in a room and we'd just get a key to access it basically whenever we like. This was not the case. It was never explained to us. And thus we were totally surprised when the hearse driver told us to make an appointment and (respectfully) drove off towards the crematorium with my dad.
So this is why you interrogate your funeral director, kids. If you're lucky, you get one who understands that not everyone is well-versed in funeral options and may be tired and will explain everything in explicit detail but if not, you may find your grieving process disturbed by having your access to the corpse limited without informed consent.
In the end, my dad spent a night at the coolig where his parents were also kept. We jokingly said he paid the place their bodies stayed at a visit. He is now at the 24h room.
The last home for the dead
A 24h room is a fantastic way to say goodbye. It is a dedicated room where the body is kept and the family can just come in and spend time with it whenever they want or need. The atmosphere is homey and calm. In this particular room, the corpse is off to the side and can be hidden by curtains. One can choose to view him or just spend time on the couch talking with the relatives, enjoying a cup of tea or playing a game. The dead person is there, but life can happen too. It's a space between regular life and the reality of death. I personally find I quite like it. My dad would not want to be kept at home until the funeral, that wouldn't fit him. But I think he'd be okay with this option. It's more expensive than a visit to the crematorium, but you have the freedom to come whenever you feel ready and that is worth its weight in gold. Here he will stay until it is time for his final trip: to church and then to his grave.

the facts were these (/pushing daisies narrator man i miss pushing daisies):
jedi facts: in this nebulous '5th quarter', a skirmish broke out on felucia, sifo was assigned to negotiate peace talks. peace talks ‘failed’, he was ‘killed’. there was a 2nd jedi present when he ‘died’. sifo’s body was cremated.
valorum’s facts: it was a senate committee working on the syndicate matter but shame shame drugs shame valorum himself contacted sifo to ‘stabilize’ things sifo AND silman were killed on felucia no bodies
pyke facts: we know nothing masters jedi sirs. honest. okay we saw him but we didn’t see anyone else. okay okay we saw him AND the advisor. we shot ‘em both down over our moon because we made an alliance with this guy calling himself tyranus. we retrieved the jedi’s body and snatched up the advisor, didn’t tell tyranus. u want him? u can have him.
silman’s facts: they TRICKED US precious the pykes killed sifo because tyranus wanted to use his identity
dooku's facts: sifo-dyas understood he saw the future that is why he helped me
the floating timeline of sifo goes like this:
tan divo & the coruscant police’s racist investigations (prior) unhelpful; investigations into hutts go slightly better (35BBY)
other syndicates threatening a full-out gang war in the coruscant underworld due to the pykes’ almost complete control over the production of raw spice (kessel, etc.)
senate committee goes uh-oh
valorum goes uh-oh, calls sifo for a meeting
sifo departs coruscant w/ silman, in a jedi t-6 shuttle
sifo & silman (the delegation) arrive on oba-diah
council messages with orders to attend to flare up on felucia
sifo leaves oba diah with silman, reaches distance of oba diah moon before being shot down by the pykes. silman is taken by the pykes.
dooku arrives at jedi temple (to delete kamino data), talks with jocasta, qui-gon, yaddle
battle of theed (45.04.19 hurrah an actual date)
at least one night passes; news of qui-gon’s death percolates.
dooku goes to confront sidious, has already ‘dealt’ with sifo-dyas, precise dates of 'dealing with' unknown.
what the fuck is a fifth quarter? it’s the time of year between black friday or christmas and the end of january in the us apparently. it’s a fiscal term. or, legally, the three full calendar months of the thirteenth calendar month from the final closing date. whatever the fuck THAT means in this gffa. HOWEVER we know there is calendric fuckery because this is star wars there is ALWAYS calendric fuckery. judicial uses the 10 month calendar. coruscant reckoning uses a (supposedly) 365 day calendar (i make this work by saying there are 3 uncounted days, the way the 10-month calendar is both 350 days AND 368 days).
possibilities: ‘the fifth quarter’ refers to those days in the 10-month calendar that aren’t counted; it’s the time between the festival of stars and new year (both one-week holidays). HOWEVER HOWEVER they also totally screwed up how the dates go by putting the battle of yavin too late in the coruscant reckoning year that it necessitates the phantom menace taking place in 33BBY so that’s what i think of THAT calendar (i did figure out the equalisation tho because i am like that. the crc has to start on 11.33 of the 10-month calendar). it can ALSO be the summer if you're talking in terms of school. ffs.
or, since the crc was done BASED ON VIBES we can go based on MY vibes (which are objectively correct) and place sifo-dyas's death date on 04.04 because:
four is death
it's before all of naboo, which puts it in line w/ tales of the jedi
it's recent enough that dooku's still doing to be a complete scribble over it
it works with disney AND legends in that it takes place post-perlemian gathering/kamino-informing and before naboo
the nitty-gritty (but not the nitty-nitty gritty) timeline (brackets are my own personal timeline, the / dates are how far through the year they are, counting down, so 32.9BBY is the 2nd month of 33BBY):
42.??.??, 35BBY: tan divo’s investigations into pyke spice trafficking begins. he fucks this up by giving into racism and believing all pykes are involved in this spice trafficking. 33BBY/32.8 (44.05.26): yinchorri attack on jedi temple; two killed; proposed point at which sifo leaves the council (final attempt at getting council to believe in his vision of the necessity of an army in the wake of the yinchorri incident, in the wake of the yam’rii incident) 32.5 (08.26): eriadu trade conference; assassination of trade fed. leadership 32.4 (09.23): passing of prop 31-814D, taxing free trade zones ???: trip to kwenn (unknown date, only that sifo is not on council) 32.4 (09.31): finis valorum under investigation for corruption 32.4: mas amedda appointed vice chancellor; valorum’s powers limited (10.01): valorum appears before court to answer corruption charges 32.3/10.05: election day, standard day each year; amidala elected queen 32BBY (45.03.23): chommell sector summit announcement 32 (03.35): gathering on perlemian orbital facility (plagueis drops the anvil about kamino to sifo-dyas) (04.02): valorum calls meeting with sifo, he and silman depart later that day (04.03): arrival on oba diah (04.04): message from council, re: felucia; departure from oba diah; shot down (04.05): blockade of naboo begins; 1 week since perlemian gathering
31.9BBY/04.14: the phantom menace begins.
04.18: arrival on coruscant; dooku & qui-gon speak during the day after the first high council meeting, before qui-gon goes to collect anakin from palpatine’s residence; departure for naboo that night; flight takes overnight. 04.19: v. early morning on coruscant is ~ mid-afternoon naboo time; occurrence of deaths: plagueis (early CR) > qui-gon (aft NB) > maul (aft NB); naboo is about 12+ hours ahead of coruscant in terms of time; result of no-confidence vote daytime on coruscant (evening naboo) 04.20: swearing-in of chancellor palpatine (coruscant day), jedi ready to leave for naboo in afternoon (early morning 21st naboo > arrival late 21st naboo). dooku confronts sidious at the limerge building in the works just before sunset. kills yaddle. there’s probably a sloppy attempt at sex here because dooku just wants out of his own head sorry not sorry 04.21: sidious departs for naboo, early coruscant morning 04.22 naboo: funeral of qui-gon jinn held 3 days post-battle of theed in naboo evening (coruscant morning)

Venture Bros Time Frame
Based on the Venture Brothers Wiki Timeline and what I could find in the show during my final rewatch before the movie. Like when I calculated Gary’s age, this is not an opinion piece. I pull straight from the source material.
I am not starting from a specific year because we know Venture Bros references current pop culture based on the year each season was released. Various dates documented in the show fail to provide a cohesive timeline. Hence, my focus is on the time frame. I'll be keeping track by noting "Venture Bros Year _" when the series moves into the next year and by referencing years as "000(number of year)" while using dates. I suggest following along with your calendar open like I had to do while organizing this lol.
S1e11 Past Tense - Orpheus predicts that The Action Man will have a stroke in "2 years, 17 days."
Tumblr media
We will start pretty late into the first year, Venture Bros Year 1
S1e13 Are You There God, It's Me, Dean - Takes place in late September 0001.
The episode features Monarch's birthday, which is around late September 0001 when, according to him, "the leaves would be orange enough..." to build his Monarch wings.
The Monarch butterfly migration and the leaves turning can begin around late September in New Jersey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Very Venture Christmas Special occurs on Christmas, December 25th, 0001, between season 1 and season 2.
While the entire episode was a dream, it was still revealed to be Christmas time. Sally is shown to be pregnant with Rocket. This is important because it solidifies that this episode specifically took place sometime between s1e7 Ice Station Impossible and s2e5 20 Years to Midnight.
Tumblr media
Venture Bros Year 2
S2e2 Hate Floats - The boys celebrate their 16th birthday.
Tumblr media
S2e5 20 Years to Midnight - This episode takes place May 4th, 0002, "...in Rusty's 44th year." In s1e8 Mid-life Chrysalis, he states his age is 43. Rusty must have turned 44 last month on April 30th, 0002. This means a little over 7 months have passed since s1e13. Rocket was born to Sally Impossible during that time.
This means the boys' birthday is between December 26th - May 3rd. I'm casting a wide net because, for all we know, the episodes in between could have happened just days apart from each other. They live chaotic lives.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
S2e11 ¡Viva los Muertos! - Rusty promises the boys will receive something better than their clones as Christmas gifts.
Tumblr media
S2e12&13 Showdown at Cremation Creek (Parts 1 and 2) - This episode spans a month between the Monarch's proposal and the wedding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
S3e4 Home Is Where the Hate Is - The boys state that they are still 16 years old "going on 17". That phrase usually indicates a birthday is approaching, but we can't assume anything definitive. What this does tell us is that a full year has not gone by since s2e2 Hate Floats, assuming the boys didn't die again off-screen.
Tumblr media
S3e5 The Buddy System - Billy says he is 35. Based on s2e12&13 Showdown at Cremation Creek (Parts 1 and 2), we know that he is 35 at least a month after May 4th, 0002.
Tumblr media
Here's where it gets tricky
S3e8 Tears of a Sea Cow - Dean's newspaper is dated May 23rd. I will explore two possibilities.
Possibility 1
Even though I don't feel like the date on Dean's paper is strong evidence as it could be a secondhand thought made up by the animators or a reference to how each season seems to occur in the year it airs, the month of May would line up as the boys had previously told Hatred they were about to turn 17 years old four episodes prior, indicating a birthday was near. If we say we are already in Venture Bros Year 3 and believe the date in the newspaper to be May 23rd, 0003, the boys would already be 17 during this episode because we know their birthday is before May 4th. However...
S3e13 The Family That Slays Together, Stays Together Part 2 - Hank says "...open my Christmas gifts early...." referring to the clones they discovered in s2e11 ¡Viva los Muertos!. Indicating that December 25th, 0002 has not occurred yet.
Tumblr media
Possibility 2
What this could mean, other than an oversight, is that it was May 23rd, 0002. This would make the boys still 16 years old. And everything between s2e5 20 Years to Midnight and s3e8 Tears of a Sea Cow takes place all in one month... but that also doesn't work because s2e12&13 Showdown at Cremation Creek (Parts 1 and 2) spans about a month by itself and we see the Monarchs multiple times in various stages of their relationship throughout season 2.
Because acknowledging the date in the newspaper would not work either way, I feel that it's safe to disregard it completely based on the current information we have. I feel more confident in trusting the writing that came directly from Doc and Jackson rather than the animation.
S4e1 Blood of the Father, Heart of Steel - The Nazis give Rusty "8 months" to clone Hitler. During this time Hank grew out his hair, Brock got out of shape and back in shape, and Gary got dieseled. Somewhere during those 8 months, we moved on to…
Tumblr media
Venture Bros Year 3
S4e2 Handsome Ransom - Billy says he is 37. If Billy wasn't lying or rounding up, this means at least a year and a day have passed since s3e5 The Buddy System. The boys must be 17 at this point.
Tumblr media
S4e5 The Revenge Society - Documenting where this episode takes place for a later reference.
S4e10 Pomp and Circuitry - Brock tells Hank "...you also have to be 18" to dissuade him from joining SPHINX. Confirming that two whole years have not passed since s2e2 Hate Floats.
Tumblr media
S4e12 Everybody Comes to Hank's - Hank asks Dean "How was your summer?" hinting that they are approaching the middle to end of summer.
Tumblr media
S4e15 The Silent Partners -JJ is in space building Gargantua II. This is information for later reference.
S4e16 Operation: P.R.O.M. - In the commentary, Doc and Jackson use prom to symbolize the boy's unofficial 18th birthday, more specifically their ascent into adulthood. I did not take this to mean it was literally their 18th birthday. The latest their birthday can be is May 3rd and at this point, they are nearing the fall.
S5e1 What Color Is Your Cleansuit? - Takes place the day after P.R.O.M. and spans 3 months. A Very Venture Halloween special takes place in the middle of it on October 31st, 0003. We see Gary raking leaves - Fall. Then the compound is covered in snow - Winter. The weather here is intentional to show the passage of time. It is unclear at this point if we have moved on to the next year. There is no mention of Christmas or New Year's. By the end of the episode, it could be as early as November 0003.
Tumblr media
At this point, we are over 2 years and at least 1 month into the series. We started in September 0001 in s1e13 Are You There God, It's Me, Dean and are now sometime past October 31st, 0003. I am keeping in mind Orpheus' prediction of "2 years and 17 days". In the commentary Doc and Jackson state that the Action Man could have considered his health since the prediction which resulted in delaying his stroke.
S5e3 SPHINX Rising - Gary says "Hank is an adult." I took this to mean he had turned 18 at some point. While their birthday may be at the end of December because we had cast a wide net for them earlier, I will assume we’ve moved on to…
Tumblr media
Venture Bros Year 4
Here’s where it gets tricky part 2
S5e4 Spanakopita! - This episode should take place in October. Team Venture attended the wedding of Aristotle Onassis and Jackie Kennedy which took place on October 20th, 1968. Another historical event mentioned was the Apollo 7 mission, which took place Oct 11, 1968 – Oct 22, 1968. In the flashback we see Spanakopita aligning with the Splashdown date, October 22, 1968. This is evidence that the dates are intentional.
In this episode we see Hank in his strength suit, confirming that Spanakopita takes place after s5e1 What Color Is Your Cleansuit? and A Very Venture Halloween special. I feel it's unlikely that they intended for a full year to have passed between s5e1 What Color Is Your Cleansuit? and s5e4 Spanakopita!. I want to make this as accurate as possible so I'm going to entertain two possibilities.
Possibility 1
If we say that s5e4 Spanakopita! was not intended to take place in October specifically and it was an oversight, then I feel safe to assume the warm weather we see after s5e1 What Color Is Your Cleansuit? indicates that we've moved onto spring or summer, still in Venture Bros Year 4.
S5e5 O.S.I. Love You - Hank’s limbs atrophied from wearing the strength suit he found in S5e3 SPHINX Rising for “weeks”.
Tumblr media
S5e6 Momma's Boys - Hank tells Dermott “Last year…” and references the events of s4e5 The Revenge Society which took place in Venture Bros Year 3.
Tumblr media
S5e7 Bot Seeks Bot - This episode takes place in July 0004. We see a flashback in S7e3 Arrears in Science which took place the night before Thanksgiving, November 0004.
Tumblr media
S5e8 The Devil's Grip - Dean says a third of his age is 6 - indicating he is probably 18.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All This and Gargantua-2 - Monarch says Rusty “hasn’t paid his electric bill since June.” We know we are in July or August because s5e7 Bot Seeks Bot takes place in July 0004.
Season 6 starts in Venture Bros Year 4, August or September 0004 because we know Dean had applied and enrolled in the Fall Semester. The boys would be 18 years old—3 years since s1e13 Are You There God, It's Me, Dean.
Tumblr media
S6e1 Hostile Makeover - Hatred says he's "been waiting to do that (hit Gary) for weeks”, assuming he is referring to the last time he saw Gary in either s5e8 The Devil's Grip.
S6e4 Rapacity in Blue - Takes place on October 7th, 0004. The timestamps are in the top right corner of the security camera videos.
Tumblr media
S6e5 Tanks for Nuthin’ - Takes place on October 8th, 0004 the morning after s6e4 Rapacity in Blue.
S7e1 The Venture Bros. & The Curse of the Haunted Problem - This episode takes place the in the days leading up to Thanksgiving, November 0004. We flashback 2 years ago to JJ discovering the Gargantua crash. This implies JJ made this discovery sometime in Venture Bros Year 2.
Tumblr media
According to The Art and Making of the Venture Bros. - Rocket is 3 or 4 years old now.
Tumblr media
Next, we have a clear time span thanks to s7e3 Arrears in Science. It's Thanksgiving, November 0004. 3 years and 2 months since s1e13 Are You There God, It's Me, Dean.
Tumblr media
Time jump to the start of the Spring Semester in s7e4 The High Cost of Loathing, which starts in Venture Bros Year 5, January 0005.
S7e4 High Cost of Loathing - There is a "two months later" time jump at the beginning of the episode.
We are still in Winter Venture Bros Year 5 as of the final episode. In total making the time span from s1e13 Are You There God, It's Me, Dean to s7e10 The Saphrax Protocol 3 years and at least 4 months.
Possibility 2
If we do say it has been another year and s5e4 Spanakopita! takes place in Venture Bros Year 4, October 0004, which means almost everything is pushed back a year. The boys would be 18 years old.
S5e5 O.S.I. Love You - Hank’s limbs atrophied from wearing the strength suit he found in S5e3 for “weeks”.
S5e6 Momma's Boys - Hank tells Dermott “Last year…” and references the events of s4e5 The Revenge Society which took place in Venture Bros Year 3. That would mean this episode would need to take place between October 23rd, 0004 and December 31st, 0004.
Venture Bros Year 5
S5e7 Bot Seeks Bot - This episode takes place in July 0005. We see a flashback in S7e3 Arrears in Science which took place the night before Thanksgiving, November 0005.
S5e8 The Devil's Grip - Dean says a third of his age is 6 - Dean must be 19 at this point and have rounded 6 years and 3 months down to just 6.
All This and Gargantua-2 - Monarch says Rusty “hasn’t paid his electric bill since June.” We know we are in July or August because s5e7 Bot Seeks Bot takes place in July 0005.
Season 6 starts in August or September 0005, because we know Dean had applied and enrolled in the Fall Semester. At this point, the boys would have to be 19 years old. - 4 years since s1e13 Are You There God, It's Me, Dean. Overshooting the 2 years and 17 days prediction by a lot.
S6e1 Hostile Makeover - Hatred says he's "been waiting to do that (hit Gary) for weeks”, assuming he is referring to the last time he saw Gary in either s5e8 The Devil's Grip.
S6e4 Rapacity in Blue - Takes place on October 7th, 0005.
S6e5 Tanks for Nuthin’ - Takes place on October 8th, 0005 the morning after s6e4 Rapacity in Blue.
S7e1 The Venture Bros. & The Curse of the Haunted Problem - This episode takes place the in the days leading up to Thanksgiving, November 0005. We flashback 2 years ago to JJ discovering the Gargantua crash. This implies JJ made the discovery sometime in Venture Bros Year 3 before S4e15 The Silent Partners.
According to The Art and Making of the Venture Bros. - Rocket is 3 or 4 years old now.
Again, we have a clear time span thanks to s7e3 Arrears in Science. It's Thanksgiving, November 0005. 4 years and 2 months since s1e13 Are You There God, It's Me, Dean.
Finally, we have the time jump to the start of the Spring Semester in s7e4 The High Cost of Loathing, which would start in Venture Bros Year 6, January 0006.
S7e4 High Cost of Loathing - There is a "two months later" time jump at the beginning of the episode.
We are still in Winter 0006 as of the final episode. Making the time span in this possibility, from s1e13 Are You There God, It's Me, Dean to s7e10 The Saphrax Protocol, 4 years and at least 4 months.
NOTES AND THOUGHTS
S1e1 Dia de los Dangerous - Presumably this episode takes place on Dia los Muertos, November 1st. Monarch states that he's in Mexico to find his foster parents. Butterflies arrive in Mexico around early November. Because this happened before Orpheus' prediction, it could be plausible that there is almost a year between the first episode and s1e13 Are You There God, It's Me, Dean. It is probably just as likely that Doc and Jackson were not considering keeping to a set time frame until much later in the series.
JJ did not appear in the season 1 Christmas Special. The boys are alive. Rusty was not on his journey running away from the boys' deaths. I wonder if this means s1e13 Return to Spider-Skull Island took place after Christmas. I am also not considering the weather as a determining factor here because I remember hearing about issues with animating different backgrounds in the earlier seasons.
If it helps, I placed the boy’s birthday on the Ides of March (March 15th) to help me keep track of things. It’s both a significant historical date and a 70’s rock band. Plus I wanted them to be Pisces :)
I also stuck the Monarch's birthday on September 30th because that's when Don became Venturion. I think it's poetic.
Tumblr media
Doc and Jackson are phenomenal writers and I’m sure if they were to address this in the show they would find a way for it to make sense that we would all enjoy. I had a lot of fun doing this. I love digging deep into my favorite show and piecing together what I find 💛 Go Team Venture!

Affordable and Convenient: Long Island Direct Cremation Services
Affordable and Convenient: Long Island Direct Cremation Services
In recent years, the popularity of cremation as an alternative to traditional burial has been steadily increasing. Long Island residents are no exception, seeking affordable and convenient options that align with their preferences. Direct cremation services on Long Island have emerged as a practical choice, offering an economical and straightforward way to handle the final arrangements for a loved one. Let’s explore direct cremation services, affordable options, and crematory services available on Long Island, New York.
Direct Cremation: A Practical Choice
Direct cremation is a simple and cost-effective alternative to traditional burial. It involves the cremation of the deceased without a prior funeral service or viewing. Many individuals and families are opting for direct cremation for various reasons, including cost savings and a desire for a more flexible memorialization process.
Tumblr media
Affordable Cremation Services
The affordability of direct cremation services is a significant factor in its growing popularity on Long Island. Traditional funerals can be expensive, often involving costs related to embalming, caskets, viewing, and ceremonies. Direct cremation, on the other hand, eliminates many of these expenses, making it a budget-friendly choice for families.
By choosing affordable cremation services, families can focus on the essentials and plan for a more personalized memorial or celebration of life at a later date. The reduced financial burden allows them to allocate resources for other aspects, such as creating a meaningful tribute to the departed.
Crematory Services
Crematory services are a crucial component of the direct cremation process. On Long Island, New York, several reputable crematories offer their services to families who have chosen direct cremation for their loved ones, including Jerusalem Memorial Chapels. These facilities are equipped with the necessary equipment and staffed by professionals trained in handling cremations with the utmost care and respect.
Choosing a local crematory service can offer families peace of mind, knowing that their loved one's remains will be treated with the dignity and reverence they deserve. Families can also inquire about the process, visit the facility, or participate in a brief service if they wish.
The Flexibility of Direct Cremation
One of the advantages of direct cremation is its flexibility. After the cremation is complete, families have the option to hold a memorial service at a time and place of their choosing. This flexibility allows for more personalized and meaningful tributes, from intimate gatherings with close family to larger commemorative events.
Direct cremation also provides the opportunity to scatter the ashes in a location of significance to the deceased or keep them in an urn at home. Families can take their time to decide on the most fitting way to remember their loved one.
Direct cremation services offer an affordable and practical solution for families seeking an alternative to traditional burial. With the option to plan a personalized memorial at their own pace, direct cremation aligns with the preferences of many Long Island residents.
Crematory services ensure that the process is carried out with care and respect. As the popularity of direct cremation continues to rise, these services remain a valuable choice for those looking for simplicity and affordability in their final arrangements.

Hello, prior anatomy assistant here. The article is horrifically disrespectful, describing the process as "unpleasant" and focusing solely on fat bodies. Those doctors should be removed from lab practice and not be fielding anatomical study if it grosses them out for any reason. Can't handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen. Those doctors blame the dead persons/patients for their personal struggle with gross anatomy and they are wrong to do so. It makes me furious that medicine is generally ableist, sexist, racist, and fatphobic among other phobias- many things to improve... Please advocate for yourself as well as seeking care from those Drs who respect YOU and your life and time.
Any of this information below is not in disregard of medical issues with fatphobia etc. I just have experience in a setting similar to the article which I hope helps.
I was working just two months ago at a medical school with cadaveric donor anatomy courses, taking care of the donors as well as making sure students/faculty have their needs/safety met. I became sensitive to the chemicals and have since gone on to work instead at a crematorium, but I did this for three years with faculty/students from Doctoral Osteopathy, Physician Assistance, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Dental, and Dual Enrollment (highschoolers learning from donors dissected by the med students). As the anatomy assistant it was part of my and faculty's job to make the point to students verbally and by action/behavior of treating all decedents as their first patient. We ask them to behave as if they were the doctor for their grandparents, to think what they would not want a doctor to do or say about their "grandmamapapa" to their face about their body and further to not discuss patients/donors beyond lab facilities for privacy and basic decency. Then we instruct them in dissecting donors with that respect in mind, that's grandmamapapa's final request after all.
I received donors of various heights, weights, ethnic background, and was often very impressed by the students and faculty alike as they found most all aspects of the course interesting/fulfilling as they showcased the variety of human anatomy. Frightened awe at enlarged organs, sadness at tumors clots and shriveled lungs, soft fascination with hip/knee implants valves and pacemakers.
Students study all aspects of anatomy including superficial structure throughout and within the fatty dermal layer, however most adipose (fat) tissue is removed to unveil the greater number of structures beneath/within. I am unsure how adipose tissue is covered in their courses beyond lab, it is a wonderfully unique cell type I would often point out as forming paquetes versus striated muscle tissue beneath to the new students seeing it the first time in such a way. All removed tissues were placed into identifying bags and stored until being replaced into the body bag of their identified donor once the donor retires to cremation so that as much of them that came into the program is then returned to loved ones receiving cremains.
Usually the largest removal of adipose tissue occurs during the first-second week of lab, not because it takes this much time but because students are having safety orientation day one, understanding the lab environment and being around a dead body for 2-4 hours at a time inspecting external structures day 2-3, and thats week one. Week two begins dissection with respect for the dead in mind and is often skinning and cleaning fat from the back muscles. This when removal of fats takes the most time due to many important questions: how to do perform dissection (loading scalpel, cutting depth, skinning angles/direction), what is this versus that, why is this a certain color etc as well as being the largest surface area. Legs and arms are skinned in stages, also while donors are prone, at the back, and continued once the donor is supine, front facing. Until complete removal the skin remains as flaps simply folded away from underlying structures. The next largest immediate removal of adipose is from the chest/pectoral region, further on in coursework and so most students have acclimated well and complete it quite quickly, an hour or less to get to the rest. Fat of the belly is left attatched for the duration of dissection as skin flaps to open/close protecting the organs from dessication/mold in much the same way as the metal donor table lids function. All exposed/skinned regions of the body are wet down with dilute embalming solution repeatedly during study/class hours and then kept under a similarly wetted sheet while not in use to practice privacy and prevent drying/decomp/mold. Faces and secondary sex characteristics are covered with separate barriers beneath the sheet also for privacy of donors (as well as for many persons faculty/student alike having mental struggles with faces).
Weight limits for the ADP (at least the one I was part of) are set 250lb before embalming (fluid weight brings some donors in at around 400lbs). The 250lb limit is set for embalming purposes. Since fats are hydrophobic they prevent absorption of embalming chemical, while muscles are hydrophilic in comparison. A higher ratio of fat:muscle can lead to more rapid decomposition due to poor embalming which then potentially leads to the donor becoming unviable for study or dissection. Despite curing for a month prior to dissection, further embalming procedures (such as on the glutes and skull cavity/brain) and decomp being "fought" continuously while in the care of the lab, preventing decomp is best done at the first embalming on pre-registered donors - ones received immediately at death into the program and not left waiting while decomposing as an unregistered or at-need donor may experience - onset of decomposition follows immediately after death. I maintained each donor fighting decomposition, mold, and drying for an average of two years of care/cost per individual donor.
Metal donor tables and tarp-adjacent body bags (where the donors lay and stay during dissection) are approx. 7ft×3ft. The tables have an inset/inlay of about 2.5 inches deep and 6.5ft x 2.75ft. There are hinged lids that when closed are pentagonal - the upright sides about 5 inches and the point where the lids meet in the middle about 7 inches from the table top, giving around 8 inches at the sides for arms mainly and 10 inches for high points like head/chest/feet. 3D objects such as human bodies must close into the bag (flat, but flexes around well due to material) and the table's lids to prevent environmental factors like spores (mold) or dessication (drying, mummification). There are other table types, such as downdraft, but I do not have experience working with them or their measurements.
Being fat is not a problem with body donation or medical study, some people are just not respectful, kind, or decent.
The reason fat cadavers are not accepted for medical programmes is that you need to cut through every layer of fat carefully. Which takes time, and lab sessions are inherentely limited in that. It's better for med students to spend that time looking at what organs actually look like in bodies. This isn't fatphobia, it's just .. the way dissecting bodies works? In the same way surgeries on fat people take longer because there's just physically more tissue. The alternative would be to force the med students who get fatter cadavers to do more lab sessions at weird times outside of the usual schedules. Or force them to stay over the holidays. Or not let them get enough time to do the lab work they need to. Which imo would be a bit fucked up especially when med school is already so difficult and time-consuming.
It’s fatphobia. Fat bodies absolutely need to be studied. To ignore an entire demographic of oppressed individuals in the medical field for the sake of convenience(?!) is violence. Did you even read the article? They called working on fat cadavers “unpleasant.” It’s fatphobia and it’s unacceptable.

curious as to what you have to say about the new lantern rite trailer .......
Tumblr media
(other thoughts which were not articulated in this screenshot were "hey remember how the speculated reason for why they had three character banners during 1.3 was bc they didn't want to release hu tao, a funeral director, during lunar new year bc it would be bad luck?" and "of COURSE they finally decide to explore hu tao a bit more during this patch cycle, since death is inescapable in natlan thanks to the ode of resurrection")
dumping the rest under a cut lol
obvs VERY excited to learn more abt the rituals surrounding death and the afterlife in genshin bc um i <3 themes grief and mourning in fiction, but also bc it makes me curious abt what this will reflect abt the lore in natlan, esp since lunar new year (n thus lantern rite, by extension) falling in the later half of the patch suggests to me that they expect players to complete the natlan aq finale before experiencing this year's lantern rite.
hu tao is a character whose arc has always been very clear to me by nature of, like, an interest in gore and morbid things maturing into an interest in grief and death (which was very much helped along by that one college english class i took which was themed around the death industry and the ask a mortician youtube channel (which i had already been watching for like a year prior to taking that class. btw)), so i'm very keen on the serious expansion of her character and showcasing the part of her who does understand the weight of death and mourning and the roles these things play in our sense of humanity.
i've also been holding for a while now that natlan's true ideal is likely closer to that of "hope" than of "war" (and that the writers just kind of painted themselves into a corner n had to run with what they said earlier on), but the immolation of the main lantern in the trailer (seemingly as part of this year's lantern lighting ceremony) does also remind me of the fact that funerals do often have flames bc of like, funeral pyres and cremation. like, hu tao's pyro vision felt like it fell a lot more into place once we started exploring natlan n death became a part of the major story
and i don't think this conflicts with my assertion of "hope" being at the core of natlan, bc i think a clearer way of articulating myself would actually be that natlan structures its nation and its culture around "war", which at its center holds "hope" as its purpose (similar to how fontaine is the nation of "justice", but held an exploration of "truth" at the core of its story) and in turn allows for the exploration of other facets of war and conflict
though at the same time, positing that natlan revolves around hope (which keeps the sacred flame, That Thing Which Revives Characters After Death, alive n stuff) when you're only revived after battle if your team wins is kind of interesting to think abt when mulling over this intersection of hope and war, bc isn't the point of hope that it's able to keep going, to continue to produce miracles, even beyond the point of rationality, which is why you should never give up on it (citation: every classical magical girl show ever)? but at the same time, it is true that you can put too much faith and stock into something that was doomed to fail, and the culmination of that failure can shock you into losing hope for a while, or lead you to never attempt that again, even if the next time you encounter a situation like that, you're much more capable and prepared...
anyway this isn't so much abt lantern rite itself anymore as it is just abt the 5.3 version trailer but i do like that the final boss of natlan is just this giant fuckoff dragon with not one, but TWO swords, and also is just an impersonation made of darkness of the pyro sovereign, which would otherwise be the embodiment of fire (and therefore unavoidably light, to at least some extent). i'll have to poke around and review the lore surrounding the pyro sovereign in-game to make any real claims here, but the fact that the trailer has him talking abt using "the power of darkness" to "prove [our] efforts futile" and that "you [mavuika] have destroyed this world's hope with your own hands" is very cool very much looking forward to the contrasts btwn light and darkness, hope and despair (or should i perhaps say futility?) next patch. speaking of light and darkness, i do also remember the version livestream for enkanomiya release when the devs talked abt how they designed the area with the intent of exploring the contrasts btwn light and darkness in mind, but that's really digressing now lol
returning to the lantern rite thing, i also think that xiao would make for a good choice for one of the core characters in the plotline because of the fact that he also deals in death, he's been having this thing abt allowing himself to remember his dead comrades alongside his arc where he learns how to live... it's very fun to see this question of, "who are you still living for? the dead? or the living?" perhaps reflect on the turning point he had back in the chasm in the version story
and anyway, if lantern rite doesn't expand on all that shit through at least the very easy connection to the new year --> symbol of renewal and fresh starts, then i will be sad and perhaps send dawei ge a strongly worded letter.

Meowllo!! Nippi's meowma here. Sorry we haven't been very active lately in our blog. A lot has been going on...
Since Nippi's birth, we've experienced her grandmeowma having to have life saving gallbladder surgery in May of 2023. Poor grandmeowma missed mother's day and her wedding anniversary.
We also lost three furbabies. Meowncle's tuxie Neos in 2023, his calico Bijou in 2024, and, just recently (23rd September 2024), Alice Louise. R.I.P. to you all, you are all loved and missed...
The hardest blow to all of in the Goode family occurred 25th September 2024. That night, approximately 9:45 pm central standard time, Nippi's grandmeowma, my adopted mother, Elizabeth Goode was pronounced dead at the hospital after having a sudden cardiac arrest` while at home. She was only 52, with no prior heart issues, including blood pressure, cholesterol, and sodium. She was type 2 diabetic, but her sugar levels had been consistently in the desired range. Proof of that, and her protein levels, was seen in how well the surgery sights from the operation done on her left foot were healing.
We are all grieving and mourning the loss of Elizabeth... loving, loyal, and devoted wife of 25 years... loving, caring, protective, and devoted mother of a beautiful, talented, and spirited daughter of almost 19 years old... as well as an adopted son (27) and adopted daughter (41). Elizabeth had fire in her soul, a heart full of love, and a strong fighter's spirit... she was a literal alpha wolf that was just as ready to love as she was ready to protect her "pack."
We are in the process of generating a gofundme account in order to raise money for her final expenses, including the $1,200.00 for her cremation. We, as a family, want it to be known that even in her death, Elizabeth still gave of herself to others, as her viable organs and stem cells were harvested for donation. May they help save lives.
Once the gofundme is fully setup, I'll post the link to the page on Nippi's blog. It will be a separate post.

What Happens At A Catholic Funeral Service?
Tumblr media
A Catholic funeral service is a deeply symbolic and ritualistic occasion that provides a solemn and respectful farewell to the deceased, while also offering support and comfort to the grieving family. The service follows a structured format that incorporates traditional elements, prayers, and hymns, reflecting the Catholic faith’s beliefs about life, death, and the afterlife.
Pre-Funeral Preparations
Prior to the funeral service, the family and close friends may gather for a wake or visitation, which is a time for mourners to pay their respects, offer condolences, and remember the deceased. This gathering often includes a prayer service or the recitation of the Rosary, a traditional set of prayers and meditations in the Catholic faith.
The Funeral Liturgy
The funeral service itself typically takes place at a church or a funeral home chapel. The service is called the “Funeral Liturgy” and consists of several key components:
Procession: The service begins with a solemn procession. The casket or urn is brought into the church, often accompanied by the priest, family members, and mourners. The procession may be led by a crucifer (someone carrying a cross) and followed by the clergy and other participants.
Opening Hymn and Greeting: Once the casket is placed in front of the altar, the priest opens the service with a hymn, and then greets the mourners. The priest may offer words of comfort and reflection on the hope of eternal life.
Liturgy of the Word: This part of the service includes readings from the Bible, often selected to reflect themes of comfort, resurrection, and eternal life. Common readings include passages from the New Testament, such as John 14:1-3, which speaks of Jesus preparing a place in Heaven, and the Psalms, which offer solace and hope. A homily, or sermon, follows, where the priest reflects on the readings and offers personal insights about the deceased's life and faith.
Eucharist (Optional): If the funeral Mass is celebrated, the Eucharist, or Holy Communion, is part of the service. The priest consecrates the bread and wine, which Catholics believe become the body and blood of Christ. Family members and attendees who are practicing Catholics may receive Communion, while others may choose to participate in a blessing.
Final Commendation: The priest offers prayers of commendation, entrusting the deceased to God’s care. This may include the Litany of Saints, asking for the intercession of saints to aid the deceased’s journey to Heaven.
Recessional: The service concludes with a final hymn and a recessional procession. The casket is carried out of the church, followed by the clergy and mourners. This symbolizes the final farewell and the transition to the next phase of the deceased's journey.
Burial or Cremation
After the church service, the body may be taken to a cemetery for burial, or to a crematorium if cremation is chosen. At the graveside, a short committal service is held, including final prayers and the blessing of the grave or urn. This serves as a final act of farewell and a commitment to the deceased’s eternal rest.
A Catholic funeral service is a meaningful and structured event designed to honor the deceased, support the bereaved, and affirm the Catholic belief in eternal life. Through prayers, hymns, scripture readings, and the Eucharist, the service provides a sacred space for mourning and reflection, celebrating the deceased's life and entrusting them to God's care.

Orthodox Funerals
Orthodox funerals are rich in tradition and focus on re-affirming faith. They believe the body and soul will meet again in eternity.
Cremation is not accepted by most Orthodox churches. Typically, an autopsy is performed before the funeral to determine the cause of death.
If the casket is open, guests usually bow before it and kiss an icon or cross that is placed near the head of the body.
Preparation and Washing of the Body
In orthodox funeral tradition, cremation is prohibited and the body must always be buried. It is customary to have an open casket and mourners are encouraged to pay their respects by viewing and touching the body as they say their last farewells. It is also a common practice to kiss the cross or icon on top of the casket.
Prior to the funeral service, a wake is often held and typically lasts three days. During this time, family members will remain by the bed of the deceased and read from Panikhidas or the Book of Psalms.
It is also common to have icons of Christ, the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary), or the deceased person on display at the funeral and they may be framed by flowers. Mourners are expected to stand throughout the entire funeral and church service, however, if this is not possible for some, there will be pews available. Mourners are also encouraged to greet one another at the conclusion of the funeral service, which is known as the Makaria.
Three-Day Wake
The body is typically kept in an open casket throughout the wake, viewing and funeral service. Mourners often greet the family, pause in front of the casket and kiss it or a cross or image placed on top. They may also bow as a sign of respect.
After the church services are complete and the Trisagion Hymn is sung, mourners will approach the coffin to say their final goodbyes. They will then close the casket and transport it to the grave site where a short service is conducted by the priest.
A Christian funeral is a time for family and friends to come together to grieve, support each other, and begin the healing process. It places a person’s death in the context of their faith and emphasizes the hope of resurrection. For this reason, it is important for people to attend all three services – the wake, the funeral and the repass. Mourners who are unable to attend the wake or the funeral can receive prayers and Communion elsewhere.
Funeral Service
Friends and family are welcome to call or visit the grieving family prior to the funeral to offer condolences. The church also holds a gathering called the “makaria” following the funeral service to comfort those in mourning and celebrate the life of the deceased. Food is served to the attendees at this fellowship meal. It is
customary for non-Orthodox Christians to attend this meal and are encouraged to participate in the prayer services.
Mourners will be given a candle on entering the church, which should be kept lit throughout the funeral and church service. They will approach the casket to pay their final respects as the Trisagion Hymn is sung.
It is not uncommon for families to choose to embalm the body in preparation for burial. However, the Orthodox Church does not require embalming and alternative means of slowing down decomposition are available (refrigeration and dry ice). An Orthodox Christian can be denied a funeral service in the church under some circumstances, such as suicide or marriage outside the faith.
Burial
Traditionally, mourners prepaid funerals nsw a lit candle upon entering the church and must hold it throughout the funeral service. The priest/bishop conducting the service will lead the participants through readings, prayers, and Orthodox funeral rites. During this time, they may also offer Holy Communion to mourners. Cremation is not permitted at an Orthodox funeral, and the church can refuse a religious funeral to families that have cremated their loved ones. However, embalming is allowed in preparation for burial.
After the funeral, family and friends usually approach the casket for their last goodbyes. Those who are in attendance can choose to kiss the icon or cross inside the casket. After the funeral, a Makaria luncheon is often hosted by the bereaved family or the congregation at a restaurant or home. During this time, members of the family can provide testimonials or eulogies. In addition, a memorial service is usually done in the Church one year following the death.

color
Her legs shake when she pulls herself from the mangle of satin-soft sheets and heavy comforter. Hand to the end-table for stability, other pressed to her forehead for…not stability. Because it hurts. Because she has such a headache. It’s right behind her eyes. Been there since last night. Been there all week, really.
But the pang has felt so welcome. The sharp, digging pain of it is grounding. It’s, she thinks, the only thing tacking her loosely to sanity. Just as the empty, vague misery had kept her tacked in bed for the last twenty-something hours.
When she manages to stumble into the bathroom, she doesn’t bother with the light. The sun’s been up for some time. It filters beautifully through the crystalline-patterned window. Casts vibrant, delicate rainbows across the marble floor and spotless sink.
Jack lifts her hand, head tilted as she watches the color fall over her knuckles. She considers it, the violet and emerald green and airy, fuzzy orange on her thumbnail.
The thumb that had, just two nights prior, wiped oily corpse paint off her firstborn’s cold cheek.
That’s not him, she’d said just as frigidly to the funeral director. That’s not Leo.
Not in an insane, dissociative way. Not as if she could deny that was her boy, lying on the slab, draped in a cloth that had more color to it than him. Golden hair around him like a halo, bloodless cheeks. Her boy, her angel. Drained of all his divinity.
That’s not him, she repeated when he’d been…painted again. I’ve changed my mind. Have him cremated. You fucking idiots won’t get it right.
It.
It right. Him.
Leo. Won’t get Leo right.
Jack pulls her hand away from the reflective hues, snatches it against her chest like it burns. And yet the tips still feel cold. Been that way since she laid her hand on his perfect face for the final time.
In the mirror, she raises a finger and pulls her right eyelid down. Beneath sits a red, muddy slash, cupped around her iris like a gentle hand.
She smiles for the first time in two weeks.
Because that’s beautiful. That’s good.
Grief has left a physical mark on her. That’s good. It’s correct, that she had cried so hard and for so long that her blood vessel had burst open. The capillary swelling with pressure so intense that it could do nothing but come apart.
The walls of her feel before-break weak, too. Fragile. Swelling swelling swelling, tear, splash.
She knows it will heal in time, but the mother part of her doesn’t want it to. Wants that crimson smudge there forever, tucked and invisible to anyone unless she shows it.
There’s a strange comfort in knowing that Leo’s departure from the world will have a lingering effect, no matter how temporary, on her body — just as his arrival had left marks.
She knows not everyone feels that way about motherhood. Doesn’t expect them to find beauty in it. But Jack does. Something poetic about being changed for love. Something melodramatic and lovely about it. Leo, silvery stripes on her thighs. Isaac, deep acne-scar pits in her cheeks. Matilda, new stress-curled pattern in her hair.
She imagines pulling that eyelid down. Flashing a permanent crimson blot.
See? This is Leo.
This is how you get him right.
