Leaving the meta bullshit aside, I think what I most appreciate about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is how – even more Remake, if that's possible – it manages to present a world that's just intensely weird simply by taking the casual absurdity that was completely normal for 1990s console RPGs and playing it straight in a tonal context that usually studiously avoids that sort of thing. Remake is like "okay, the original game has you fighting a killer house – what would that look like in a less cartoony milieu?", and then Rebirth is like "hold my beer".

The crew goes to fight for Midgar! Was definitely in a Final Fantasy 7 mood due to the recent release of FF VII Rebirth! But I still think fondly of the beginning dark grundy adventures in the Shinra Power plant!

8,000 other people have probably already made this joke but I can’t believe that both of Fig’s reality breaking confrontations with Ruben this episode culminated in the fact that she’s been here the whole time

One of the better examples of integrating video game conventions of play into the narrative is how the game mechanics tutorials in the opening stages of Final Fantasy VII (the original) flip the customary script and have Cloud, the player character, be the one explaining things to other characters, thereby establishing the unspoken expectation that his narrative function is to be the guy who knows what the fuck is going on and lending greater weight to the eventual revelation that he has no idea what the fuck is going on.
