It’s our last day in Edinburgh, and we visited the two known film locations for S3, if anyone was curious - thought I’d add some photos below the cut - if you’re avoiding spoilers for S3, look away now!

Sending love to the fandom. It’s been a rough time, but I see hope on the horizon. I hope you do, too.

Nothing is better than a unexpected "crossover".
I was just innocently watching Jeeves & wooster for the first time when THIS majestic building popped up.

Suddenly, I was PAYING ATTENTION!!
here: the stairway in direct comparison

and here: the library: pay special attention to the wonderful picture of the little girl

and here also the folly

so amazing - I did NOT expect that!

A true Englishman doesn't joke when he is talking about so serious a thing as a wager.
Jules Verne, Around the World in Eighty Days (1872)
Michael Todd’s adventure comedy film ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ was released in 1956. The film starred David Niven as Phileas Fogg. It also starred Mario Fortino Alfonso Moreno Reyes (known as Cantinflas) as Passepartout, Robert Newton as Detective Fix, and Shirley MacLaine as Princess Aouda.
The rare picture of David Niven as Phileas Fogg in the Reform Club’s Card Room was part of a set just for publicity purposes and is held in the Reform Club archives. When it came to actually filming the scenes in the Reform Club they shot in the studios with a life-like set. The Reform Club refused to let any filming done on its premises for fear it might disturb its members.
As a current female member looking back, I might have voted otherwise just to let some daylight in to this once stuffy place.
Times have changed and a few private members clubs are quite partial for a big budget film to shoot some scenes in their iconic premises. This includes the Reform Club which has appeared in many popular films such as the James Bond films ‘Die Another Day’ and 'Quantum of Solace', 'The Avengers', 'Sherlock Holmes', 'Tenet', and others. I know there are now grumblings from current members that things have swung too far and the Reform Club is not a film set but a private haven for its members. So perhaps the Reform Club should close its doors on the principle less is more.
Anyone want to take me up on a wager that it will?

idk there’s something a little insidious to me about buying a house that you know was used in a popular movie/tv show knowing that people will naturally want to take pictures there and then being hostile and venomous when people take the time to reach out and actually ask permission to take pictures there rather than just showing up…. like i understand wanting privacy, but if you’re that hellbent on it then don’t buy a house that has a history of being used as a film set and expect people to leave it alone
like yeah, obviously people shouldn’t just walk up to your yard and take pictures of your house, but if someone takes the time to write you a letter asking for permission and being polite and respectful of you as the owner of the house, why are you going to be rude and condescending to that person who’s being more considerate than the average fan???
like i understand wanting privacy, that’s why i don’t use my real name on here and why i don’t give a lot of personal details about myself, but to be an asshole about it when someone is trying to be respectful of the property by HANDWRITING A LETTER ASKING TO VISIT you automatically lose my interest in respecting that 💀💀💀 like a simple “no, we aren’t allowing visitors at this time, sorry” would have sufficed
(for context i saw an instagram reel about a girl wanting to visit the dawson’s creek dock, and she wrote a letter to the owners of the house- WHO HAVE PUBLICLY LISTED THE ADDRESS AND LET PEOPLE TAKE PICTURES THERE BEFORE- asking if they would be alright with her going to the dock to take a photo and they replied to her letter via email w this rude, hateful reply about how people like her have no respect for others and are selfish to expect to just be let onto their private property- private property where the address is public information- and “mess around” as if her taking the time to write a letter isn’t more respectful than most people who just show up)

The Stanley Hotel — Estes Park, Colorado
Although The Timberline Lodge is the hotel fans most closely relate to The Shining, it was actually used in only a few establishing shots; all interior scenes were shot at Elstree Studios in England using a mock-up of the Timberline’s exteriors. King, as it turns out, ended up hating Kubrick’s film so much that he supported a 1997 remake filmed at The Stanley Hotel, the historic resort that inspired King to write The Shining in the first place. Before and since, the grand hotel at the entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park became known as one of the most haunted places in the US. In room 407, the pipe smoke of The Earl of Dunraven can still be smelled. Guests of room 217 (including King) sometimes experience extra housekeeping services—bags unpacked, blankets folded—possibly because of a deadly bone-breaking accident experienced there in 1911 by the chief housekeeper. But room 418 is the hotel’s most-haunted room, says the staff, who insist they’ve seen the ghosts of children and even their impressions left behind in mattresses. King himself reported that he saw a ghost of a small child on the second floor.
Every year The Stanley celebrates the presence of the hotel’s supernatural, non-paying guests, as well as the literary work of Stephen King, with its annual Shining Ball, Halloween Masquerade Party, murder mystery dinners and a Ghost Adventure Package including a room on the haunted 4th floor, a paranormal activity K2 Meter, a glow-in-the-dark Stanley Hotel squishy ghost and a REDRUM mug. “We expect it will bring together people from around the world for something to remember forever,” says general Manager, Frank Wetenkamp. For your own eerie Shining experience, grab a stool at the Cascades Whiskey Bar, just like Jack Torrance did, and order a Corpse Reviver from the bartender…who might or might not be a figment of your twisted imagination. But one thing’s for sure: he’s sick of customers doing Jack Nicolson impressions.
