Non-Human Skin Tone Characters in the AO3 Ship Stats
(The AO3 Ship Stats, if you're unfamiliar.)
When I expanded the race categories I use in the stats in 2021, I added the category of "N.H." to stand for "non-human" or "non-human skin tone".
This category was invented for characters like those from Undertale, Homestuck, and Steven Universe, who are visibly non-human creatures (aliens, monsters, etc.). However it was quickly extended to cover humanoid characters with unrealistic skin tones like blue or green, such as Liara T'Soni from Mass Effect or Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy.
The reason for this was that these characters are all visibly alien in a way that means they cannot serve as representation for any real race. Even if a non-human character is coded as a certain real race (e.g. Garnet from Steven Universe) they will not fully be seen by the audience as a member of that race.
(N.B. For most fictional characters, self-identification is not a useful metric for race, because it is frequently never discussed. Instead the AO3 Ship Stats aims to capture the level of representation for different races by trying to list how the character is racialised/assumed to identify by the audience.)
This is in contrast to humanoid characters who, although not human in species, are portrayed with a fully human appearance including a recognisable human race; e.g. the angels and demons from Good Omens and Supernatural, or aliens like Supergirl, Thor, and The Doctor. These characters are listed as the human ethnicity of their actor, because that is how they are portrayed to the audience.
However, as with all categories, there is a gray area at the edge of this definition. Specifically, I want to seek opinions on two categories:
Characters who used to be human, but have been transformed to have non-human skin tones. (Examples: Marceline from Adventure Time, Alastor from Hazbin Hotel, Poison Ivy from DC.)
Characters who are non-human and have a non-human "true" appearance which is shown, but have a canonical "human form" in which they frequently appear. (Examples: Vision from Marvel, Martian Manhunter from DC, Odo from Star Trek.)
Currently both of the above categories are listed as N.H.
I will not automatically be treating the results of this poll as binding, but I will take them into consideration. However I am more interested to hear detailed feedback and reasoning so please reblog with discussion if you have thoughts!

How Do I Make My Fictional Gypsies Not Racist?
(Or, "You can't, sorry, but…")
You want to include some Gypsies in your fantasy setting. Or, you need someone for your main characters to meet, who is an outsider in the eyes of the locals, but who already lives here. Or you need a culture in conflict with your settled people, or who have just arrived out of nowhere. Or, you just like the idea of campfires in the forest and voices raised in song. And you’re about to step straight into a muckpile of cliches and, accidentally, write something racist.
(In this, I am mostly using Gypsy as an endonym of Romany people, who are a subset of the Romani people, alongside Roma, Sinti, Gitano, Romanisael, Kale, etc, but also in the theory of "Gypsying" as proposed by Lex and Percy H, where Romani people are treated with a particular mix of orientalism, criminalisation, racialisation, and othering, that creates "The Gypsy" out of both nomadic peoples as a whole and people with Romani heritage and racialised physical features, languages, and cultural markers)
Enough of my friends play TTRPGs or write fantasy stories that this question comes up a lot - They mention Dungeons and Dragons’ Curse Of Strahd, World Of Darkness’s Gypsies, World Of Darkness’s Ravnos, World of Darkness’s Silent Striders… And they roll their eyes and say “These are all terrible! But how can I do it, you know, without it being racist?”
And their eyes are big and sad and ever so hopeful that I will tell them the secret of how to take the Roma of the real world and place them in a fictional one, whilst both appealing to gorjer stereotypes of Gypsies and not adding to the weight of stereotyping that already crushes us. So, disappointingly, there is no secret.
Gypsies, like every other real-world culture, exist as we do today because of interactions with cultures and geography around us: The living waggon, probably the archetypal thing which gorjer writers want to include in their portrayals of nomads, is a relatively modern invention - Most likely French, and adopted from French Showmen by Romanies, who brought it to Britain. So already, that’s a tradition that only spans a small amount of the time that Gypsies have existed, and only a small number of the full breadth of Romani ways of living. But the reasons that the waggon is what it is are based on the real world - The wheels are tall and iron-rimmed, because although you expect to travel on cobbled, tarmac, or packed-earth roads and for comparatively short distances, it wasn’t rare to have to ford a river in Britain in the late nineteenth century, on country roads. They were drawn by a single horse, and the shape of that horse was determined by a mixture of local breeds - Welsh cobs, fell ponies, various draft breeds - as well as by the aesthetic tastes of the breeders. The stove inside is on the left, so that as you move down a British road, the chimney sticks up into the part where there will be the least overhanging branches, to reduce the chance of hitting it.
So taking a fictional setting that looks like (for example) thirteenth century China (with dragons), and placing a nineteenth century Romanichal family in it will inevitably result in some racist assumptions being made, as the answer to “Why does this culture do this?” becomes “They just do it because I want them to” rather than having a consistent internal logic.
Some stereotypes will always follow nomads - They appear in different forms in different cultures, but they always arise from the settled people's same fears: That the nomads don't share their values, and are fundamentally strangers. Common ones are that we have a secret language to fool outsiders with, that we steal children and disguise them as our own, that our sexual morals are shocking (This one has flipped in the last half century - From the Gypsy Lore Society's talk of the lascivious Romni seductress who will lie with a strange man for a night after a 'gypsy wedding', to today's frenzied talk of 'grabbing' and sexually-conservative early marriages to ensure virginity), that we are supernatural in some way, and that we are more like animals than humans. These are tropes where if you want to address them, you will have to address them as libels - there is no way to casually write a baby-stealing, magical succubus nomad without it backfiring onto real life Roma. (The kind of person who has the skills to write these tropes well, is not the kind of person who is reading this guide.)
It’s too easy to say a list of prescriptive “Do nots”, which might stop you from making the most common pitfalls, but which can end up with your nomads being slightly flat as you dance around the topics that you’re trying to avoid, rather than being a rich culture that feels real in your world.
So, here are some questions to ask, to create your nomadic people, so that they will have a distinctive culture of their own that may (or may not) look anything like real-world Romani people: These aren't the only questions, but they're good starting points to think about before you make anything concrete, and they will hopefully inspire you to ask MORE questions.
First - Why are they nomadic? Nobody moves just to feel the wind in their hair and see a new horizon every morning, no matter what the inspirational poster says. Are they transhumant herders who pay a small rent to graze their flock on the local lord’s land? Are they following migratory herds across common land, being moved on by the cycle of the seasons and the movement of their animals? Are they seasonal workers who follow man-made cycles of labour: Harvests, fairs, religious festivals? Are they refugees fleeing a recent conflict, who will pass through this area and never return? Are they on a regular pilgrimage? Do they travel within the same area predictably, or is their movement governed by something that is hard to predict? How do they see their own movements - Do they think of themselves as being pushed along by some external force, or as choosing to travel? Will they work for and with outsiders, either as employees or as partners, or do they aim to be fully self-sufficient? What other jobs do they do - Their whole society won’t all be involved in one industry, what do their children, elderly, disabled people do with their time, and is it “work”?
If they are totally isolationist - How do they produce the things which need a complex supply chain or large facilities to make? How do they view artefacts from outsiders which come into their possession - Things which have been made with technology that they can’t produce for themselves? (This doesn’t need to be anything about quality of goods, only about complexity - A violin can be made by one artisan working with hand tools, wood, gut and shellac, but an accordion needs presses to make reeds, metal lathes to make screws, complex organic chemistry to make celluloid lacquer, vulcanised rubber, and a thousand other components)
How do they feel about outsiders? How do they buy and sell to outsiders? If it’s seen as taboo, do they do it anyway? Do they speak the same language as the nearby settled people (With what kind of fluency, or bilingualism, or dialect)? Do they intermarry, and how is that viewed when it happens? What stories does this culture tell about why they are a separate people to the nearby settled people? Are those stories true? Do they have a notional “homeland” and do they intend to go there? If so, is it a real place?
What gorjers think of as classic "Gipsy music" is a product of our real-world situation. Guitar from Spain, accordions from the Soviet Union (Which needed modern machining and factories to produce and make accessible to people who weren't rich- and which were in turn encouraged by Soviet authorities preferring the standardised and modern accordion to the folk traditions of the indigenous peoples within the bloc), brass from Western classical traditions, via Balkan folk music, influences from klezmer and jazz and bhangra and polka and our own music traditions (And we influence them too). What are your people's musical influences? Do they make their own instruments or buy them from settled people? How many musical traditions do they have, and what are they all for (Weddings, funerals, storytelling, campfire songs, entertainment...)? Do they have professional musicians, and if so, how do those musicians earn money? Are instrument makers professionals, or do they use improvised and easy-to-make instruments like willow whistles, spoons, washtubs, etc? (Of course the answer can be "A bit of both")
If you're thinking about jobs - How do they work? Are they employed by settled people (How do they feel about them?) Are they self employed but providing services/goods to the settled people? Are they mostly avoidant of settled people other than to buy things that they can't produce themselves? Are they totally isolationist? Is their work mostly subsistence, or do they create a surplus to sell to outsiders? How do they interact with other workers nearby? Who works, and how- Are there 'family businesses', apprentices, children with part time work? Is it considered 'a job' or just part of their way of life? How do they educate their children, and is that considered 'work'? How old are children when they are considered adult, and what markers confer adulthood? What is considered a rite of passage?
When they travel, how do they do it? Do they share ownership of beasts of burden, or each individually have "their horse"? Do families stick together or try to spread out? How does a child begin to live apart from their family, or start their own family? Are their dwellings something that they take with them, or do they find places to stay or build temporary shelter with disposable material? Who shares a dwelling and why? What do they do for privacy, and what do they think privacy is for?
If you're thinking about food - Do they hunt? Herd? Forage? Buy or trade from settled people? Do they travel between places where they've sown crops or managed wildstock in previous years, so that when they arrive there is food already seeded in the landscape? How do they feel about buying food from settled people, and is that common? If it's frowned upon - How much do people do it anyway? How do they preserve food for winter? How much food do they carry with them, compared to how much they plan to buy or forage at their destinations? How is food shared- Communal stores, personal ownership?
Why are they a "separate people" to the settled people? What is their creation myth? Why do they believe that they are nomadic and the other people are settled, and is it correct? Do they look different? Are there legal restrictions on them settling? Are there legal restrictions on them intermixing? Are there cultural reasons why they are a separate people? Where did those reasons come from? How long have they been travelling? How long do they think they've been travelling? Where did they come from? Do they travel mostly within one area and return to the same sites predictably, or are they going to move on again soon and never come back?
And then within that - What about the members of their society who are "unusual" in some way: How does their society treat disabled people? (are they considered disabled, do they have that distinction and how is it applied?) How does their society treat LGBT+ people? What happens to someone who doesn't get married and has no children? What happens to someone who 'leaves'? What happens to young widows and widowers? What happens if someone just 'can't fit in'? What happens to someone who is adopted or married in? What happens to people who are mixed race, and in a fantasy setting to people who are mixed species? What is taboo to them and what will they find shocking if they leave? What is society's attitude to 'difference' of various kinds?
Basically, if you build your nomads from the ground-up, rather than starting from the idea of "I want Gypsies/Buryats/Berbers/Minceiri but with the numbers filed off and not offensive" you can end up with a rich, unique nomadic culture who make sense in your world and don't end up making a rod for the back of real-world cultures.

Lando was sitting on the couch, barefoot, in a hoodie and a pair of gray sweatpants that hung just right. His curls were an absolute mess, and he had a slight scruff on his jaw, making him look even more annoyingly good. He was laughing at something on the TV, completely unaware of the fact that you hadn’t absorbed a single word of the show because your focus was entirely on him.
Every little thing about him was driving you wild tonight—the way his arm rested along the back of the couch, his stupid little dimples when he smiled, the faint scent of his cologne mixed with the warmth of his skin. You could feel the heat pooling low in your belly, your cheeks flushed, and the ache growing impossible to ignore.
You shifted in your spot next to him, trying to sit still, but your legs brushed against his, and it sent a jolt through your body.
“You alright there, love?” Lando asked, turning to look at you with that boyish grin of his.
“Yeah,” you said, maybe too quickly, as you crossed your legs and tried to look normal. “I’m fine.”
He raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. “You sure? You’ve been fidgeting all night.”
You swallowed hard, biting your lip as you glanced at him, your resolve crumbling. “I’m just… distracted.”
“Distracted?” His grin widened, and he leaned closer, his face now only inches from yours. “By what?”
“By you,” you admitted, your voice barely above a whisper.
He blinked, caught off guard, but the smirk quickly returned. “Me? What did I do?”
“Exactly,” you huffed. “You’re just sitting there looking… like that.”
“Like what?” he teased, leaning even closer now, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
“Like—ugh, you’re impossible.” You grabbed a throw pillow and smacked him with it, trying to distract yourself from the way his proximity was making you feel.
But Lando wasn’t about to let it go. He caught the pillow, laughing as he tossed it aside. “You’re horny, aren’t you?”
Your eyes widened, your face heating instantly. “Lando!”
“What?” he said, feigning innocence as he leaned back, looking all too pleased with himself. “I’m just stating facts. You can’t even sit still, and now you’re blushing.”
You groaned, covering your face with your hands. “Shut up.”
“Why should I? This is great.” He scooted closer, his voice dropping slightly as he added, “You know, if you wanted me to do something about it, you could’ve just said so.”
His tone sent a shiver down your spine, and you peeked at him through your fingers. “And what are you going to do about it?”
Lando’s grin softened into something a little more serious, his hand brushing against your thigh. “Oh, I’ve got a few ideas,” he murmured, his voice low and teasing.
Your heart skipped a beat as his hand trailed upward, his touch sending sparks through your skin. Whatever was on Netflix was long forgotten as Lando shifted, pulling you closer until you were straddling his lap.
“I knew you couldn’t resist me,” he teased, his hands settling on your waist.
“Shut up and kiss me,” you shot back, grabbing his hoodie and pulling him in.
And for once, he did exactly what you asked.

Humans sometimes wonder what separates them from other races like elves and dwarves and orcs, like what makes them unique. Some people say humans are generalists, some people say we're the most adaptable. But actually there is something that stands out about us that all the other races find super weird. Humans are the only sentient creature to reproduce sexually like animals do, and because of that we're the only species with romantic or sexual attraction, and ideas like sex and gender.
Elves and dwarves create new members of their races slowly and methodically, like works of art. Harpies, angels, demons and dragons are all individually and personally created by their gods. Orcs and goblins are spawned from spawning pits on mass. Merfolk come close with how they lay and fertilize eggs, but even then any individual merfolk can both lay eggs and fertilize, and they don't meet when they do it. Vampires and other undead are spawned from other races. Fae just sort of show up.
So the idea of having sexes, and genders constructed around them, and sexual and romantic relationships is all incredibly weird for other races. Most humans don't notice it because they just naturally assign members of other races genders when they meet them.
Diffrent races have diffrent ideas around these constructs. But most of them find it some level of confusing. A lot of them just ignore it. But it's really disturbing for some, romantic relationships seem like weird bonds that can't be explained, like some sort of unexplainable and volatile connection. Sexual attraction seems like some dark animalistic instinct. Gender is incomprehensible, and also seems wrong and immoral to most races. And sex itself seem like the darkest of any reproductive ritual or magic. Because of all of this humans who don't experience some or any of these things often have an easier time connecting with other races.
This has also lead scholars to belive that humans are the only sentient race to evolve naturally. Something often thought impossible before studies on humans occurred.

The moment Oscar walks through the door of your shared flat in Monaco after a week of being gone at a race weekend, you immediately run to him and squeal, "Oscar!"
Right away, starts laughing, dropping all his bags on the floor so he can throw his arms around you in a tight embrace, saying, "Hey, Y/n."
You smile, leaning your head onto his shoulder. You stand there, hugging each other for a few minutes, before you finally murmur, "Wanna do something?"
He chuckles, kissing you cheek before finally leaning away again and murmurs, "Oh, angel, I just got home, and it's. Could you just give me a second to put down my bags and change first? I'm just a bit knackered; it's been a long last twenty-four hours."
"Oh- yeah, of course, Osc," you say right away. "You're just in a relaxing mood then?"
He smiles, nodding, and yawns, as if on cue. "Yeah, that'd be great. You wanna wait for me on the couch? Maybe you could put on a show, if you want."
You nod back and let him go off to do whatever he needs to do, getting his favorite series set up for when he's back and ready.
It's only a few minutes until he walks back into the living room in more comfy clothes, and flops down on the couch next to you. When he sees what show you've pulled up on the television, he says with a little smile, "Oh, my favorite."
You grin, responding, "I know," before getting the show started.
As you watch, Oscar pulls you closer and closer to himself, and once the show is finished and silence fills the room, he leans in and murmurs, "I'm so lucky to have a woman like you to come home to."
You smile softly at him, looking at him with nothing but pure affection in your eyes, and murmur, "I'm so lucky to have a man like you coming home to me."
He grins and kisses your nose, before whispering, "Come closer."
You chuckle softly and move closer.
"No, no, closer..." Oscar whispers again.
You giggle a bit more and say with a smile, "Honey, this is as close as I can get."
But his eyes seem to soften even further before he says with a little glimmer in his eyes, "No it's not. You can sit on my lap."
You know how sweet and loving it's all suppose to be, but in that moment, as soon as he says that, you seem to feel a terrible squeezing in your chest, and all you want to do is close your eyes and leave this situation altogether as you feel that sinking feeling drop in your stomach.
I can't sit on his lap. Why would he even say that?
Doesn't... doesn't he see?
"N- No..." you murmur. "That's fine. I don't really want to."
He frowns, thinking for a few seconds, before asking gently, "Y/n... why not?"
"Because- I just don't want to." You look away from him.
But he takes your hand gently. "Angel, you can tell me."
You swallow, looking down at his hands holding yours. Sigh shakily. "It's just..." you trail off, but he waits. You swallow again, before finishing with a soft crack in your voice, "I just feel like I'd crush you."
He stares. Sighs softly, before wrapping his arms tightly around you in a hug, so you cheek leans against his chest. "Honey. You won't crush me..." he says gently, near your ear.
"Yes I will..."
"Y/n," he lifts your chin, looking you earnestly in your sad eyes. "You will not crush me." He smiles softly, wiping the singular tear that slipped from your eye away. "You don't have to worry about that, angel."
"But, I..." you sigh, trailing off, looking away.
He sighs as well, but nods, saying softly, "But if you don't want to sit on my lap, I understand. You don't have to if you don't want to." He tilts your chin towards him again, just very gently, before adding, "But just remember, I'll always be ready to hold you in my lap. And you don't have to worry about crushing me either, okay?"
You just sigh, your damp eyelashes fluttering, but don't respond.
Oscar just gently pecks your lips before pulling you back close to his chest, holding you in his arms until the both of you fall asleep for the night.
The next morning, you wake up on the couch right where you fell asleep last night, the scents of Oscar presumably making up some sort of breakfast in the next room wafting in. You sit up, stretching with a big yawn, and are about to head to the kitchen, when Oscar peeks his head in and says, "You awake?"
"Does it look like I am?" you say with a teasing tone in your voice.
He smiles, entering the room fully and walking over to sink down on the couch next to you. He leans in, gently kissing the tip of your tone, saying, "I guess we both must've fallen asleep on the couch last night. But anyway, I just want to let you know... I felt so... blessed last night to come home after a long week to you. To be able to snuggle with you, and hold you in my arms..." He smiles softly. "It just really means a lot to me."
You smile softly back at him, your eyes flicking over him, before you murmur, "Aw, Oscar... that's so sweet..."
He smiles, and says with a little hum, "Not as sweet as you..." before leaning in for a kiss.
Once he pulls away, you say with a little teasing giggle, "So somebody's in the mood, I see...?"
He rolls his eyes before saying simply, "Well, after I got to rest up with you last night and get my hugs, isn't it fair for me to get my kisses, now, too?"
You smile, shrugging, and saying, "Alright. Point made. I won't complain." As you both lean in for another kiss, Oscar draws you closer to him, his hand cradling the back of your neck while the other rests possessively on your waist. He hums softly into the kiss, both of you feeling needy for each other. Connected. He fervently kisses you, his tongue dancing with yours, teasing and tantalizing. Making you feel completely lost in the most found way. As he deepens the kiss further, you feel his hand gently stroke down your body, painfully slow, before both hands grip your waist and he gently pulls you even closer to him, onto his lap. He doesn't want you to pull away from him, not even for a second, completely gone, addicted to you, but you do anyway, panting softly, and stare at him. "You-"
He smiles softly, leaning into to press his lips against your neck, before murmuring, "I know, I know, honey. But don't you see, Y/n?" He peppers a few more tender kisses on your neck. "You're not crushing me..."
You sigh shakily as he continues gently kisses your neck, before leaning back again to smile into your eyes. "Oscar..." you breathe, feeling a weight slowly being lifted off your chest as he gazes at you.
"Yes?" his eyebrows softly raise.
You throw your arms around him, causing him to chuckle softly, pulling you in, his arms wrapping around your back. "What?" he chuckles, kissing your cheeks.
"You know exactly what."
His eyes soften with pure affection as he gently rubs your lower back. And he holds you there, on his lap, a blanket of acceptance and calm and peace covering the two of you.
He kisses you on your scalp, murmuring, "I love you, gorgeous."
"I love you too, Oscar. In fact, I adore you."
He smiles, tilting your chin up to gently, slowly kiss you once more, in beautiful synergy with one another, before he pulls away to softly whisper, his eyes gazing intensely into yours, "I bet I adore you more."

It's so funny to me how determined the series is to pretend Hiccup hasn't killed people/isn't capable of killing people when necessary.
They act like he wasn't out there every day of the week burning and sinking dragon hunter ships with his friends in rtte. He just seems to be very stuck in the mindset of: 'if I don't see the bodies, then who's to say I've done something as morally reprehensible as murder?'
Like he literally caused multiple of Krogan's henchmen to be electrocuted at once and fall off their dragons but he didn't actually see their bodies hit the water so it's fine.
But he can't directly kill someone. He struggles when it's not some faceless soldier, and he has to look at or speak to them knowing he needs to take their life.
Unless Toothless or Astrid are in immediate danger. Then all reservations about killing and violence disappear (rightfully so).
