Fic Recs Vol. 2: TMA hasn't let me go!

So, we're here once again! Wanted to make another rec list as I made the last one quite a bit ago and thought I'd just spread the good writing I've been soaking up like a plant the past few weeks. Some of these are recent, others not, it's mostly just anything I really really enjoyed and had in the first few pages of my bookmarks on AO3.

Let's get started:

we'll embrace that much longer (make more of a mess) by SmallishWormMasterOfTheUniverse. A Jon and Tim centric fic centered around a pair of handcuffs that locks the duo together. Hijinks ensue.

hanging curtain rods in hopes of windows by epilobium. Safehouse fic (my personal favorite genre of jmart fic). Honestly, never read a safehouse fic that made me yearn more than this one. Something about it just hit all the right notes in my heart. Safehouse in general is amazing. Keep doing what you do, safehouse era writers!

so revival/so alone by heartshapedguy. Another safehouse fic (big surprise there) that is also focused on the sheer capacity for yearning that the safehouse era holds. Also a very good study in how hard it is for depression to allow love into your heart. How it makes it impossible to believe that anyone could be in love with you, truly. jmart lovers, your food has arrived!

I warn you, baby, each night, as sure as you're born (you'll hear me howling outside your door) by distortiondaisiras. A great, I mean, truly great fic about the Basira and Jon dynamic we could've had on tape. Jon, who loves Daisy in his familial "I have no one to take care of me" way, and Basira, who loves Daisy in a slightly more obvious "You are the only one who could understand why I do the things I do" but complicated way nonetheless.

Surprise, Gertie: We've Unionized (subheading) In More Ways Than One by dduucckk. An amazing polychives fic for all of my polychives lovers. Features Gertrude Robinson, a statement or two, in-field research that should not be done by archival assistants, and love finding a way, always.

dragon slayer by hueue. Alternate meeting for jmart where Jon is already in his full monstrous transformation. He attempts to take Martin Blackwood's statement. Martin Blackwood, being the stubborn man he is, says, firmly, no. Somehow, they end up behaving like a married couple by the end.

i will not ask you where you came from by flwergardens. This fic is amazing. Truly. Reads like a statement that you would find in the Archives. Alternate universe. Jon's husband comes back from the dead. It is his husband. Obviously. Why wouldn't it be? (Spoiler/Not Spoiler: That's not his husband!)

The Problem of Susan Fic Recs

For many reasons, The Last Battle is probably the most contentious addition to the Narnia canon. The standout, though, has to be the infamous Problem of Susan, wherein the Pevensie children are all killed in a train crash and brought to Narnia 2 Electric Boogaloo aka heaven, then declare that Susan is no longer a friend of Narnia because of her interest in “lipsticks and nylons”. Hardly any time is spent on this, but the implications have been the ground for a lot of argument and discussion. What exactly would happen to Susan, and should it have happened? Over the years, dozens of fic writers have thrown their hats in the ring and weighed in on the subject, making the Problem of Susan almost a prism for the fandom: everyone shines through it a bit differently, resulting in a wide spectrum. Here’s some of the highlights under the cut.

Starting with the fic that coined the term, written by Neil Gaiman himself, this fic is a reflection and deconstruction of the idea that Susan would be able to find Narnia again by delving into the trauma that the experience of losing all her family at once as well as the social injustices that a young woman of her time would’ve faced, something that the narrative of The Last Battle never really addresses. It took off for a reason, as it presents a lot of good food for thought, but it’s also got some pretty weird shit that can feel like it’s conflating adulthood with edginess. Well worth a read for all the points it raises, but if you’re fond of canon you probably won’t like the way it takes a hammer to it.

Now this one is exactly what you’d want to read if you wanted some feel-good time. This story is probably the closest to how C S Lewis would’ve written Susan’s return to Narnia, detailing her rediscovering all the things she put away as well as what led up to her rejecting Narnia in the first place. It falls more to the end of being almost uncritical of canon, with the focus on Susan basically having the same sort of religious rediscovery that C S Lewis himself had in his life. Because of how she was treated in canon, that can be pretty frustrating, but the ending feels nothing short of joyous.

Swinging back to the other end of the spectrum, this fic is very critical of the idea of The Last Battle being a pretty happy ending for everyone, unambiguously stating that life is always worth living for all the Pevensie kids. It explores what their lives could’ve been like if they didn’t die, being a rebuttal of C S Lewis’ themes rather than a continuation of them while feeling equally as happy as the fic directly above.

And this story feels like a midway point between the above two. It dives really deep into the emotional damage that Susan would’ve suffered before and after the train crash in some absolutely gorgeous prose, showing both her and Aslan with great sympathy while maintaining that what happened to her is not a punishment in any way. Bittersweet and very, very good.

Heading back towards the more critical end of the spectrum, this fic presents a Susan who is not interested in finding Narnia again, only her family. She is very much a character straight out of an ancient myth rather than a teen trying to make sense of a senseless situation here, filled with determination as much as desperation. It’s probably the closest fic on here to having something close to a plot as well as a character study, with the exception of The Queen’s Return and one other:

Being a crossover with what’s pretty much the antithesis of the Chronicles of Narnia, His Dark Materials, it’s probably easy for you to guess which side of the spectrum this story falls on. It’s more of a HDM story than a Narnia one, but the two worlds blend together surprisingly well, and it gives us a rare look into a Susan who’s lived decades of her life when the story picks up. She’s pretty much the Professor and it is fascinating, as is everything left to interpretation by this gem of a fic that is ambiguous yet deeply satisfying.

¡And here’s Susan as a Doctor Who companion! This isn’t directly a Narnia story so much as it is one about two people much older than they look mourning the loss of their worlds, with a Susan who is a queen wise beyond her years. Reading it is like taking an ice shower. It doesn’t hold back on the grief, and as a result it manages to feel honest as it reaches a warm ending.

Despite also being a crossover, this is in some ways the opposite of touch the sky with two arms. Susan is more of an everyday young woman than a queen, and [SLIGHT SPOILERS] Narnia itself does feature directly. But y’know, that’s part of what makes fandom so interesting. Not everyone is going to have the same take on everything, and the ending of this leans more happy than melancholy.

¿A shipping fic that’s also a crossover with Peter Pan that features neither Neverland or Narnia? Yes, this one probably has the least to do with Narnia or Aslan, but it tells a very compelling story about living life and growing up, something that isn’t perfect but can be good if you find someone you want to spend your life with. Susan Pevensie and Wendy Darling are a really good couple, pinky promise.

Technically more a series of ensemble oneshots, but Susan features very prominently in a lot of them, and they will make you feel every feeling that everything else on this list might’ve given you. Satisfaction, devastation, simple joy, just go give it a shot.

I have given the majority of the sequel sneak peaks I can afford to give yesterday, so we'll have to wait until KMKY is finished for more sequel goodness, I only caved yesterday bc it was my birthday and I love giving presents.

What I can do is link some old answers to various gravity falls writing prompts I've done before on my blog, and recommend some of my fanfics in other fandoms to tide you over.

I'm working as hard as I can to get the next chapter ready for you, so hopefully it will be ready after xmas or in early jan, and we literally have the roadside attraction chapter, Dipper and Mabel vs the Future and Weirdmageddon to go and then its the end of KMKY!

I'll be plotting and organising the timeline for ITBICD (It's The Best I Can Do or KMKY 2 electric boogaloo lmao) during this time too so hopefully I can launch straight into it after the final chapter of KMKY is posted!

For fanfic recommendations I haven't had the chance to read a lot of Billford fanfic since I tried not to read others fics while working on KMKY (there were a few notable exceptions, Theseus's Guide by @stump-not-found slaps (its fun, well paced and zany!) and I read Statement Abnegation (dark and gritty, not sure I was a fan of the ending since I like Ford to have more agency but for a dark fic it went places) since it was recommended to me. I also enjoyed A Postcard from New Mexico by roseverdict (an excellent concept and nice Stan brothers bonding) that I felt compelled to read)

If you don't mind other fandoms, I'll link my ao3 bookmarks of other stories I loved. There's a lot of batman, magnus archives, star trek, the locked tomb, miraculous ladybug, witcher, thor, rise of the guardians and homestuck (because we all had that phase, don't lie) and the list isn't very long, just some fics I like rereading there.

Weekly Fic Recs 55

This week's fic rec list is a little different because I received 3 (!!!) asks for fic recommendations this week! One ask was for Bruce & Jason fics and 2 (!!!) were for Superbat slow burn/pining/enemies to friends to lovers/angst/etc. So, you know, the good stuff :) Making those lists had me rereading fics that I really enjoyed when I first read them. It was fun! I highly encourage all of you to go into your bookmarks/history/subscriptions and reread a past beloved fic. It's nice going back and catching the little things that you missed before. It's like a special little treat for yourself :)

Boy on the Couch by Pure_Night_Fury - Batfam, complete. The newly formed Justice League get back to the Batcave and find some random guy passed out on the couch. For some reason, Batman knows him. WHO COULD HE BE??????

liquid courage by scarletazure - Superbat, complete. Another fic that's on one of the above lists! Featuring: A surprise birthday party for Clark, Clark getting drunk, and Clark drunkenly confessing his feelings for Bruce. Much feels and shenanigans ensue.

The Demon in the Details series by SalParadiseLost - Batfam, series incomplete but there are plenty of complete stories! Bruce, Alfred, and Dick are humans, but the rest of the family are demons! I really enjoyed the world building in this one, and the different species of demons. There is also a reverse vese of this series where Bruce and Dick are demons, but Jason and Damian are human. Very enjoyable to read, I lost sleep over these fics multiple nights when I lost track of time, lol.

DC x Marvel Fic Recs 2, Electric Boogaloo

Welcome back to another DC x Marvel fic rec list! It’s been about a year since I made the first one, and I thought it would be appropriate(and festive!) to share people's work again, and also as a sort of year recap of what I’ve read. The first one was over 1 and a half years of reading, and covers most of the fics that are still influencing how people write DC and Marvel crossovers today. 

Specifically, if you take only one thing away from it, it’s that reading Dark Matter can give you context for why writers make certain choices when writing their Peter Parker in DC fics. There are some, many even, where Peter has green eyes and a white streak in his hair by default, and it is never explained. DM has had such a huge influence on an entire crossover fandom, and I think because of that it’s worth a read, if not just for the context it’ll give for other works.

On a smaller side note, I’ve always wanted to say that the lack of synopses on the last few recs of my first list wasn’t because I thought they didn’t deserve as much attention, but because I was up late at night making it, and decided at some point that I was very tired and wanted to be done with it. And then I just never added them, and here we are a year later.

Set after No Way Home, Dick Grayson finds himself in a New York he doesn’t recognize, and being helped by a hero he’s never heard of. A hopeful story about legacy, choices, and trying your best even if it’s not enough.

Don't Let Go (but loosen your death grip) by @missquestion

Where DC and Marvel are the same world, Peter only has a mind for death after he and half the universe get snapped back into existence. This one feels like the start of a larger universe.

Friendly Interdimensional Neighborhood Spider-Man by @mysterycyclone

A super simple and not at all gutting fic about (Insomniac) Spider-Man helping Nightwing win a fight. That’s all.

A very cute crack fic about Bruce becoming Peter’s guardian, and Peter being unable to be anything but a little shit about it.

Working for Gotham’s DA Harvey Dent is one of the stranger job experiences Peter’s had… The fic hasn’t gotten to that yet, but the writing style has absolutely captivated me. Reminds me of your style, @songue85! It feels like the beginning of an adventure.

The Unsteady Retirement of One Mr Peter Benjamin Parker by aestorian

Beaten down by the hero life, 22 year old Peter retires to a civilian life of selling coffee. Arbitrary dimensional travel and Gotham vigilantes trailing him like ducklings be damned.

I think this is a great introduction to them, and could be your starting place to read Kat’s long moonbat fic, in labyrinths of reflections, which I recced in the first list. I absolutely adore labyrinths, and if you couldn’t tell, I’m really trying to get you to read it.

Clint Barton and Dick Grayson, growing up in the circus together. Full of love and loss and hope, this is another story that’s very dear to my heart.

When trying to steal the tires off his car, Jason instead finds himself eating pancakes with the car's owner Tony Stark, and being offered a job as his security.

Lois Lane interviewing Pepper Potts. Written in a journalistic first person style that I don’t think I’ve seen before in fanfiction– I’m still quite charmed by this one.

The Robin and the Panther by @mysterycyclone

After Robin War, Duke Thomas continues to protect his City from the rooftops. When he meets a girl who needs to get back to her dimension, it’s just another day in the life. A bittersweet little story with the prevalent theme of grief.

Playing with Shadows - part one of Dead Doesn't Mean Gone au

This was supposed to be a oneshot, but I quickly got really attached to this version of Mikey and Splinter and the fic ended up being six chapters long. By the time the first draft of this fic was done, it was the first part of a series and I started really thinking about what happened to both these characters and where to take them in the future.

2. Memento Mori (Remember That You Must Die) - part three of DDMG

DDMG Tang Shen is a lot of fun to write. Figuring out who she was when not someone's dead wife/mother was as entertaining as it was interesting, and the answer was apparently someone who's simultaneously filled with so much love and a desire to protect her daughter, as well as constantly cataclysmically enraged at all the people who have wronged her. If dropped into season 1 of the 12 universe, Shredder would be dead within a week.

Her relationship with DDMG Splinter now lives in my brain rent free - they were so close to moving to NYC, and being happy together, but everything went to hell instead. I am so excited for when we (eventually) get to her and Splinter meeting up again.

I will say there are parts in this fic that assign more blame to Shen than is fair regarding what happened + the arguments she and Yoshi had about moving. That isn't me blaming her for them having relationship issues because Splinter is my blorbo - her husband died horribly and was simultaneously blamed or a lot of stuff he didn't do + his name was dragged through the mud, so a combination of that and survivor's guilt has left Shen blaming herself a lot more than she should, because the idea of blaming him for anything, even the times he was a stubborn mule, makes her feel complicit.

3. The Whole Being Dead Thing - part one of Ghost Splinter 2 Electric Boogaloo

Splinter dies and keeps making awful (un)life choices, which all blow up in his face.

Also fun fact: the name for this au was supposed to be a jokey placeholder name until I thought of a better one, because saying "that au where splinter dies" also describes DDMG. But then I got attached to it

4. The Pied Piper of New York - part two of DDMG.

I know DDMG has taken up most of this list, but in my defence I've not written many fanfics. Also it's my comfort au and I enjoy shaking it like a dog. Actual picture of how I write this au below:

This is probably the first fic I wrote that really started to include horror elements, which are a lot of fun to write. Getting to write Mikey's brothers and how they bounce off one another and Splinter is also entertaining, cause I get to explore how they're different or similar from their 12 counterparts e.g. Leo gradually coming to see Splinter as one of them, but not liking the idea of Splinter being Mikey's dad because it a) interfers with Leo's own pre-existing plans and b) he doesn't want to think about their dad being replaced.

5. Lone Turtles and Cubs - part one of tmnt ageswap au/ dubiously canon for The Road to Hell.

I'm still proud of this fic - it was one of the first things I wrote after not being able to write for 5+ years, and is one of the first fics I managed to finish.

Basically the Turtles throwing a party to commemorate their rat nephew and sort of human nieces being given their first weapons, with flashbacks to shortly after they all got mutated.
