Sick days
Whumptober 2024, alt prompt: Shivering
Summary: Time has fallen sick and Twilight doesn’t have any other choice than to look after him. Not the easiest task for a youngster whom doesn’t trust easily. The situation’s even harder when the older male doesn’t want to stay in the bed while being bit delirious.
CW: Sickness (coughing, shivering, nausea, throwing up, fever, feeling weak, being delirious)
Notion: - Part of my Ranch Family AU, the modern Linked Universe stories. - Time has lost his right eye and has the scar over it but he does NOT have the markings. Won’t have for several years to come, in fact. - This happens between Twilight’s first and second nightmare.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
Time woke up harshly as he began to cough cruelly. He was shivering violently even though he knew the room wasn’t cold even one bit. He shook his head to try and force the nausea and coughing out of him but that only worsened his situation. He whined while resisting the urge of laying back down. “Don’t have the rights…” He reminded himself quietly before shakily standing up.
The one eyed male knew he was sick but it never had stopped the orphanage from putting him and the others to do the chores and whatnot. Wars had tried his best to look after him but he hadn’t been able to allow the older boy to get hurt because of him. Later on Malon had been much more forceful with keeping him to the bed. Yet, neither was there and he had the whole ranch to look after. Not to mention about the boy he had only about a month ago adopted.
Time took few deep breaths to try and stay calm. After that he started to stagger out of the room. He fought to keep the sickness down but he knew it would crash in every now and then. He just had to keep it bearable.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
Twilight woke up with a start when he heard the coughing. He moved quietly and bit uncertainly to the door before unlocking it and peeking out. He was quite shocked to see Time leaning heavily against the wall, coughing cruelly and moving almost swayingly towards the bathroom. He hesitated for a moment longer before going after the one eyed male. He flinched as he heard the older male throwing up. Yet, he soon frowned as he heard Time talk.
“Stupid, stupid, stupid! You don’t have rights to be sick!” Time growled while trying to ease out his nausea. He tried to stand back up only to gasp and crash back down. “Fuck… Wars and Malon would tell me to stay in the bed but neither is here. They never will be.” He half whispered before shaking his head. “Just force it down.” He nearly snarled and staggered back to his feet. “That’s what you were taught back then. If you’re sick, it’s your own fault and it doesn’t give you rights for day off.”
Twilight inwardly growled while wondering once again what Time had gone through in his past. It clearly wasn’t anything of good if he was taught something like this. He took once a deep breath and knocked on the door. “Time?” He called bit worriedly after having heard the startled gasp. “You okay?” He queried even though he knew that was the most idiotic question ever.
Time took a deep breath while leaning almost all of his weight on the sink. “Yeah… I’m okay!” He replied while inwardly cursing his hoarse and bit weak voice. “Just use the bathroom at downstairs. I’ll be down in a moment and we can start the day’s work. It’s bit earlier than normally but that’s fine.” He told before partly gasping and crashing to his knees as he began to cough again.
Twilight growled inwardly and shook his head. He knocked on the door again to catch Time’s notion. “Can I come in?” He inquired even though he was certain of the answer already.
“R-rather not. I don’t want you to catch whatever this is.” Time replied between the coughing. He was fighting to hold back the nausea but he was soon by the toilet again and throwing up.
“You’re sick.” Twilight called firmly from the other side of the door. “And when you’re sick, you should stay at the bed.” He half commanded.
Time gave a humorless chuckle and shook his head. “The ranch doesn’t look after itself.” He reminded while concentrating into his breathing to stay calm enough. “Just go and start the day already. I’ll follow in a moment. This is a fleeting thing, I’m sure.”
“Yeah, no.” Twilight stated out and just entered the room. “You’re going back to bed and you’ll stay there.” He quite well commanded while trying not to flinch at how weak Time was looking at the moment. “Come on.” The youngster coaxed gently and helped Time up while supporting him fully. “I’ll come back after few hours and do some soup for you to eat a bit.” He half offered while leading the way back to Time’s room.
Time wanted to argue back but he wasn’t having the strength for it. He just nodded and allowed the youngster to aid him down to the bed. “Just… Fetch me if you need my help in anything. Okay?” He requested and Twilight nodded.
“Of course. That is, if you keep staying in the bed and getting rest.” He countered and Time simply nodded. “Good. I’ll come to check on you after couple of hours or so.” Twilight stated out before leaving the room. He wasn’t too happy of leaving Time alone but he knew the rest was best cure at the moment. He had looked after enough of kids at the orphanage to know.
When Twilight came back to check on Time and woke him up enough to get something eaten, Time actually apologized for leaving the youngster to handle the ranch alone. Twilight kept on trying to convince that it was fine and he knew what he was doing. Yet, the Cuccos would be a problem. “Just… Hum this song and they’ll follow you. Malon calls it as Cucco March.” Time half whispered before humming the song but ending up coughing once finished. He cursed quietly before bit curling up on the bed. “Wars always said I got the sicknesses on hard way…” He mumbled before drifting off to sleep.
Twilight felt tad uncertain of the situation but he left Time to rest. Surprisingly that song worked even though the Cuccos still didn’t approve of him. Yet, he kept going to check on Time every now and then to make sure he was as all right as could be.
The boy Time had adopted felt bit grateful once he had the work around the ranch handled. He checked on the one eyed male before going to the downstairs to wash up. He didn’t want to bother his caretaker’s sleep by using the second floor’s bathroom.
Once ready, Twilight made another check on Time just to make sure he still was resting peacefully. He really hoped the sickness would pass and things could get back to normal by tomorrow. Yet, just to make sure the ranch’s owner would actually heal, he worked with simple soup for them both to eat before going to wake him up for the late meal. He stayed at Time’s room for both company and to make sure the other one actually got the plate empty without trouble. After that he took both of the empty plates, glasses and spoons back to kitchen. He cleaned them away before doing a drink of hot water with lemon and honey in hopes of it aiding Time’s sore throat and that he could rest through the night well enough.
The youngster wasn’t too happy of his own choice when he finally went to bed but he kept both Time’s door as well as his own door bit open. He just felt like wanting to hear how his caretaker was doing in case he needed help. He wasn’t really willing to let the older male into the stairs for as simple thing as needing a glass of water. Yet, he really hoped the one eyed male would be in much better condition by the morning with all the rest and food he had gained. Still, he couldn’t help but worry. Time’s own words of him getting the sickness in hard way made him bit fear that the next day would be even worse than what today had been. Part of him worried if he actually should’ve taken him to the hospital already but so far it had been just bit rougher case of cold and nothing worse.
At the next morning Twilight woke up into Time coughing cruelly before already crashing to the floor at the hallway. The youngster was up and out of the bed on that instant. “Time?” He called worriedly as he approached the older male.
The ranch’s keeper was shivering while keeping his eye tightly closed and one hand at his mouth. He was leaning against the wall as he tried to will the nausea down. The call of his name went right past his understanding. Yet, he soon doubled over as he began to cough again.
“Hey! Easy!” Twilight half shouted as he dashed that short distance and crouched down next to his caretaker. He tried his best to help the older male to calm down and get to breathe normally again.
“W-Wars…?” Time called weakly while raising his gaze up. Yet, before his adopted son could answer, he already shook his head. “No… He’s… No…. I’m not…” He mumbled before shaking his head again. “W-where…?” He growled and forced himself back to his feet while leaning against the wall. “No rights… The keepers of the place…” He shook his head again before whining and clamping his hand over his mouth.
“Time?” Twilight called again while carefully moving in front of the one eyed male. “Time, can you hear me?” He queried with rising worry.
“Who…?” The ranch’s owner half asked while frowning and not fully recognizing the youngster before him. “W-where… This isn’t…” He shook his head again before forcefully pushing himself off of the wall. “S-sorry… C-can’t… No rights…” He mumbled while going around the boy he had adopted.
Twilight was beyond worried as he turned around to keep eye on his caretaker. It was clear the older male’s mind was trapped somewhere between reality and past. He didn’t know what the one eyed male’s older brother had called him but he really doubted he would’ve had the rights to use such nickname no matter what the situation was. All he could do was to try his best to get Time back to bed and keep him there.
“Time.” The youngster called again and quickly moved in front of the ranch’s owner. “You need to go back to bed.” He stated out as firmly as he dared. “Wars’ order.” He tried while praying he wasn’t crossing an unseen line there.
“W-what…?” Time queried while frowning in confusion at the boy before him. Yet, he soon shook his head. “N-no… C-can’t…. They’ll hurt him…” He argued back sorrowfully before shaking his head again and frowning. He could feel there being something off in the situation but he couldn’t fully understand it.
Twilight gritted his teeth while praying he wasn’t going to ruin something by playing along with the situation. “Wars can look after himself. He asked me to make sure you’ll stay at the bed. Please? For him.”
The one eyed male hesitated for a moment before sighing heavily and bit slumping until nodding. Twilight sighed in relief and bit relaxed before he started to guide his caretaker back to bed. He felt his heart hurt as he watched the older male curl up and shiver beneath the blanket. Yet, there wasn’t much he could do at the moment so he went to get ready to start the day. It was early but he hoped it meant he could keep better check on his sick caretaker.
Twilight did his best to make sure Time had all he needed close by and that he was resting peacefully before he left the house. Luckily the weather was nice even though cold. He didn’t yet let any of the animals out as he began to work on the empty closures first. There was lot to do but he chose to work only on the most crucial ones so he could keep going to check on Time often enough.
Sadly, when he came back to the house, the ranch’s owner was at the bathroom changing clothes. Yet, the one eyed male was just staring into the sink while frowning. “Late… No… I… Where….? I gotta…” He mumbled while shaking his head now and then but not really grasping the situation other than him being sick.
“Time?” Twilight called in worry and felt slight relief when the older male’s ear twitched a bit to show he had heard him. “What are you doing? You should be at bed.” He told firmly while carefully approaching his caretaker.
“Yeah, I…. N-no… I should…” Time mumbled while frowning and shaking his head. The youngster he had brought to the ranch gently took hold of his arm and began to lead him out of the bathroom and back to the bedroom. “W-what… W-what’s going on…?”
“You’re sick. You need to rest. It’ll help.” Twilight whispered gently while having never dealt with something like this. He recalled his own fake memories and sightings from his past but it was different. Those had been caused by drugs. This was sickness. And he wasn’t certain if it was normal or not.
The youngster stayed until he was certain that Time had fallen asleep. Only after that he returned to work around the ranch. Next few checks were easy as the one eyed male was still sleeping. He once woke the ranch’s owner up for bit of food and drink. It was bit frightening to have his caretaker fight back against the situation but when he told it was Wars’ request, the older male gave in and accepted the food.
Yet, during one of the checks, Twilight found Time from the stairs. He was coughing and gripping the railing very tightly while having either crashed or sat down to the step. “W-where…? T-this isn’t…”  He mumbled while noticing the differences and yet not fully understanding.
“Not at the orphanage. You’re safe.” Twilight whispered while aiding his caretaker back to his feet. “Come on, you need to get back to bed. You’re sick. Getting some rest will help you to heal.” He coaxed gently and Time just numbly nodded while following the younger male back to the bedroom.
The youngster really hated the situation. His caretaker was clearly delirious and in need of being looked after. And yet, the ranch needed someone to work and make sure things were all right around there too. He wondered a bit if he should just get the older male into hospital but considering the ranch’s owner’s past, he was quite certain it wasn’t worth the trip. He just needed to keep better eye on the guy and come to check on him more frequently. Sure, that would slow down his work around the ranch but he was certain it would be worth it.
The animals, especially Epona, understood Twilight’s worry easily and did their best to aid him as well as they could. It mainly was by not being on his way and allowing him to do what was needed. Yet, they also made sure he went back to the main house to check on the ranch’s keeper as often as possible. With their aid, he adopted boy of Time’s was capable of keeping him to the bed and get something eaten while reassuring him over and over again that everything was just fine and he was safe and sound.
On that night Twilight actually slept on the floor of Time’s room. He was far from certain of his choice but he felt too worried for the one eyed male’s sake. Things just had felt like they were going for worse and he needed to be closer in case the next day was even more wrong. For once the luck was bit on the youngster’s side as he didn’t end up into any kind of nightmares while sleeping this close to the older male.
The next morning’s wakeup call came in the form of Time’s rough coughing. Twilight jolted awake and sat up straight before already snapping his startled gaze into the one eyed male.”S-sorry, Cub… D-didn’t mean to wake you up…” The ranch’s owner quite well fought the words out between the coughs.
Twilight sighed in relief and got up from the floor. “It’s fine.” He replied with a slight smile while coming to sit on the bed. Even though Time was quite well shivering, the youngster still carefully placed his hand over the older male’s forehead to check for fever. He gave a slight grin at the one eyed male’s scowl. “You’re sick.” He just stated out with a shrug. “It happens.”
Time sighed heavily after having gotten through the coughing fit. “I’ll manage. Don’t worry ‘bout me.” He told as firmly as he could while carefully sitting up.
“NO.” Twilight commanded and, as carefully as he could, he forced his caretaker back down. “Rest. Stay in the bed. I can handle things.”
The ranch’s keeper tried to fight back but he only ended up coughing. Twilight grimaced while feeling sorry for the older male. “I… It’s not right. You working alone. I should… I should do my part too.” He argued back while feeling hellish of leaving the youngster to care for the ranch on his own.
“Hate to say this, Time, but you’d only be on the way.” Twilight told sorrowfully but he felt like he needed to tell the truth out. “Honestly, Time, just get some rest and heal. That’s all I ask. Please?” He nearly requested with slight hopefulness in his voice. Time grimaced while trying to get his mind to work and find the right words. “It’s not your fault you’re sick. It just happens. And when you’re sick, you’re supposed to look after yourself first. You can’t care for this place or me if you’re not in the best condition.”
The one eyed male jerked a bit in start and he snapped his startled gaze into the youngster. The boy he had adopted just smiled reassuringly while wishing he’d accept the given words. “Wars and Malon kept saying the same thing…” He finally whispered while turning his gaze off.
“They were right.” Twilight confirmed calmly before getting up. “Just stay in the bed and recover. I’ll come to check on you once in a while.” He hesitated for a second before leaning down and kissing Time’s forehead. It took his caretaker off guard and he frowned in both surprise and slight worry before bit smiling and accepting it. “Just sleep. You’re safe.” The youngster promised gently while noticing the older male drifting off back to dreamland.
As Twilight left the room as quietly as he could to go change clothes and start the day’s works, his mind returned into the interview he had found from the Internet. Through that talk of questions and explanations, he was aware of his caretaker’s scars and the torture he had endured in the orphanage. Yet, there hadn’t been a word of the mental hell he had gone through. It was so very clear that the keepers of the orphanage had done far more than just physically hurt the kids.
The youngster kept coming to check on the older male as often as he could while looking after him by simple foods and drinks to aid his recovery. Still, most of the time as he came to check on him was used to reassure the one eyed male that everything was under control and that he should just stay in the bed to heal. Yet, what actually hurt him was the fact that Time kept apologizing for having fallen sick like it would’ve been his own fault. No to mention the time he needed to keep on telling that the ranch’s owner had all the rights to stay in the bed and rest so he could heal from the sickness.
Twilight wanted to ask and get answers but he didn’t dare. Time hadn’t forced or put him into situation where he needed to face his past. He wanted to give the older male the same courtesy to decide when and how he wanted to reveal the secrets and hurts of his childhood. And yet, he couldn’t help but wonder what really had been going on in that orphanage to leave the one eyed male like this.
Luckily Time stayed at the bed and made his boy’s working that one bit better by not needing to worry over him so much. Yet, he still bit feared to find the older male out of the bed and trying to get some chores done. It was quite a relief each time when he found his caretaker from the bed. Usually he was dozing off but few times he was wide awake and clearly thinking about something. He didn’t ask and the one eyed male didn’t tell a thing. Part of him wondered if he was doing the right thing but he kept reminding himself that he was only doing what the ranch’s keeper gave him: The rights to choose the right time and right situation to open up.
At the next day Time was in much better condition. He was still feeling bit weak after having had one really rough day in there. Yet, he refused to stay in the bed as he wasn’t feeling nauseous, wasn’t coughing nor was he shivering. Things seemed to be well enough. Still, Twilight refused to let him do any actual hard work but he allowed him to supervise on things and aid on smaller parts.
They were working at the stables when the one eyed male made his choice. He took once a deep breath to stay calm while leaning against the digging fork. “At the orphanage they said it was our own fault if we got sick and hence it didn’t give us the rights to take the day off to recover.” He told as calmly as he could while keeping his gaze off of his boy.
Twilight was startled of the given words. He straightened up and turned his gaze into the older male. “Time, you do realize—“ He started but his caretaker cut him short.
“I know but I feel like I owe it to you.” The ranch’s owner told swiftly. “I know you’re not comfortable with me and you ended up into a situation where you had to look after me. It’s not right. I’m sorry about that. I really am. But, for what it’s worth…” Time smiled a bit and looked fondly at the youngster. “Thank you.”
Twilight was fully taken off guard and he felt bit uncertain of the situation. He wanted to argue back but with those two last words, he blinked in slight start before slightly smiling. “You’re welcome.” He replied before deciding to go further with the actual topic. “I hope you do realize that it’s not your fault if you get sick. It just happens. The people at the orphanage were wrong and cruel.”
Time smiled slightly while turning his gaze away. “I know…” He whispered bit sorrowfully before shrugging and returning to look at the younger male. “It’s just that… Well….” He shrugged again with a sorrowful smile. “Old habits die hard and all that.”
The youngster sighed a bit and nodded. “I know.” He half whispered before returning to his work. He wasn’t certain of how to feel about the situation. Yet, he bit reluctantly admitted that Time wasn’t much of different from him. What they both had gone through was different but the end result was similar. They both had things to deal with that would haunt them for a long while. And still, he now had Time like Time had had his wife and her family. Even with this realization, the trust was still something he couldn’t establish just like that. Not after what he had gone through in his own past.
Nonetheless, as Twilight glanced at the older male, he couldn’t deny the fact that he already trusted the guy a bit. Not much but it was a start. And it was something he could work with little by little.
In fact, what was more shocking to the youngster than anything else, was the very fact that he was feeling much safer than for years. It was a feeling he had though he wouldn’t have ever again but here, at the Lon-Lon Ranch, he actually dared to entertain the idea of having a place where his past couldn’t get to him. Or, well, at least not physically as he was certain he’d be dealing with nightmares and whatnot for quite a while to come. Still, he felt like he was ready for them even if they’d take him off guard.
When Time checked on the boy he had adopted, he ended up frowning a bit. He could notice that something had changed even though he wasn’t certain of what. Yet, as he took in the difference compared to how things had been before he had fallen sick, he couldn’t deny the fact of liking the new demeanor of the youngster. The change of the situation was very slight but he had gotten quite sharp eyes back in the orphanage so realizing this kind of things wasn’t hard for him. It quite well just happened unconsciously.
Nonetheless, the slight freedom and bit more relaxed posture of Twilight’s was something the ranch’s keeper accepted willingly. He didn’t want to count on his own work as the boy had only been there for about a month. It was short time but clearly the change of place and different rules were what had been very much needed. And he would keep on doing whatever it took to aid the kid to heal.

My mom noticed and made me eat to the point i felt fine and i couldnt lie about it becuse she would have noticed and if i refused i would be back at the hospital so i guess it was worth it even tho i feel disgusted now and i just know im going to have to eat so much.

So I got really drunk at a party tonight. And walking myself home I end up falling and cut my knees. Now J.J is I'm my home cleaning all the blood taking care of me and I feel so special. I don't care if it hurts, he cares and take care of me. Plus my drunk brain only realizes now I'm in my underwear but he didn't say anything.

i think it’s a pretty common headcanon that whenever there is a spider, annabeth freaks the fuck out. which is super weird to most people, because she’s like… the bravest person ever. even if you don’t know she’s a demigod, she’s just a badass. but if there’s a spider, she’s screaming bloody murder and jumping up on tables and counters. and of course, percy always comes and kills it for her. no matter what he’s doing or where he is.
but i think what would be even weirder for people (who don’t know her extremely well) is how seriously percy takes it. i feel like girls being scared of spiders and having their male partners come kill it is such a basic ‘weak white girl’ stereotype. and it usually is funny, even to the one who’s scared. so when annabeth does this and starts screaming for percy, people would start laughing. naturally, right? haha it’s so funny that annabeth chase is so scared of bugs. and after percy runs in and takes care of it, they would expect him to be laughing too and poke fun at her.
except it’s the exact opposite. there’s nothing funny about his expression. his jaw is hard-set and his sea green eyes are full of nothing but concern. he does a thorough examination of the surrounding area, makes absolutely sure there aren’t others and gets rid of any webs, and then goes straight to her. and his first question, every single time, is “you okay?” nothing but concern and support. and if the legendary fearless annabeth chase needs her boyfriend/husband to carry her across the room, because she doesn’t want to step on the rug now, you know dam well he’s gonna carry her across the room without a second thought. and you’d better not laugh at her, or else percy’s gonna give you the most scolding glare you’ve ever received, and it’s gonna make your arm/neck hairs stick straight up and your blood turn to ice.
and it would take people off guard every single time. because he’s not laughing at her. he takes her fear completely seriously. and it’s because he knows about her past. he’s seen her face her worst horrors. he knows what happened with arachne.
he knows exactly why she’s so scared of spiders, and to him, there’s nothing funny about it.

“Scream if you have to,” is such a terrifying phrase to hear from Bruce. But I think the Batkids actually need to hear it — whether they’re getting a bad break reset, or having a wound cauterized, or something else extremely painful — it can be a relief to know you’re allowed to yell and make noise. Relieving to know that Bruce says it’s okay to scream.

Astarion is so funny if you’re good at using him in your party
Astarion: I’m so weak and need to be protected the only thing I’m good for is sex I’m so helpless
Also Astarion: one shot sniping half the enemies, single handedly taking out the bosses by doing 50 plus critical damage, barley takes any damage while the rest of the party is stumbling back to camp with 2 hp, has the best mobility to help pick everyone up when they’re downed, not to mention gutting everyone with duel wielded daggers and short swords, can take like 50 actions in a turn.

Super Mario is supposed to be this powerful figure to the Mushroom Kingdom, this beacon of hope with little to no weaknesses. With everything on his shoulders, he has to keep going.
Or else he'd let them all down.
