I have a headcanon.

The term "borrower" was originated by humans, and as borrowers developed a symbiotic relationship with humans, they gave that name to themselves as well.

But what about the time before that? The times where borrowers didn't result to borrowing from humans yet?

Or what about what non-humans call borrowers?

What if there's a synonym for the term "borrower", like there's synonyms for the word human?

I'm talking Archaic terms that are only used by beings older than time and space.

I think, they would call them,

"Children of Issun"

And it's derivatives, like "Son of Issun" for example.

Just like humans are called "Son of Adam", after the first human, Borrowers are named after "Issunboshi", the first person of the borrower species to ever exist, at least according to local folklore.

There's other variations, depends on the region and the experience of the person who used the term, but "Issun" is used widely, and it is considered a default.

I like the idea of an immortal using this term instead of borrower, because he has been there before they started borrowing.

I was writing for a Kids on Bikes game I wanted to set in the suburbs recently. I was coming up with ideas for what sort of monsters would haunt there, and these are some of them:

The Ice Cream truck finally started showing up again! Something’s off about it though. The ice cream all tastes the same; and the ice cream man never really talks much. Sometimes the truck comes out at night, still playing that music. It's almost like it's not a real ice cream truck at all, just some kind of weird people-lure.

It started with some pets going missing. Always when they were out near the sidewalk and always at night. Now some kids are saying that they saw the shadow of a man behind them from the streetlights, but when they turned around, nothing was there. Recently one of the local dads never came back from his late night jog.

As far as you know, Mary and John Smith have always lived in this neighborhood. They're nice, normal people. Maybe a little too normal. They come to every BBQ and HOA meeting with those same placid smiles on their faces but you're not sure if you've ever actually heard them speak, or seen them eat anything. The only time you've ever seen them react to anything is at the HOA meetings when someone proposes changing anything. Those proposers always seem to move away.

On the other side of the county road there's a big field. Normally it's just filled with tall khaki grass, but recently some really bright flowers have shown up! They're a cool color that you've never seen before, a deep vibrant purple. Everyone was talking about them for a week, but then things sorta moved on. Now, you're pretty sure you just saw a racoon with that same striking violet color... on the petals sprouting where its eyes used to be.

Being a babysitter isn't the most interesting job in the world. Kids are always babbling about the crazy things they make up. Imaginary friends, outright lies about personal achievements, or the monster on the stairs. Actually, that's the third kid this week to talk about a monster on the stairs, and they're all sounding really similar. Maybe it's something they're learning from school?

I've had this killer idea for a story called "Battle of the Neighbourhood," where a family who's had enough goes up against their tyrannical HOA.

Now, I'm Australian and I live in Gov housing, so I have never had the pleasure of dealing with such a body, but what I've learned about HOAs make my forehead vein pop out.

Identifying as he/him and as homosexual, he shows a remarkable amount of organic traits and features for such an early prototype of automata. He currently resides with his ‘friend’ Ari.

Ari Carcinnen

Ari Carcinnen, better known as just Ari, is a crabhuman who currently resides within Sunhill City, well known for his activism for Automata rights. Being adopted by two lesbian mothers, he identifies as he/him, but often dresses in a more feminine or androgynous manner. He is also pansexual, and currently resides with his ‘friend’ DOUG.

Lilia Fwnspire

Lilia Fwnspire, often called Lilia or Lil, is a vampire residing within Sunhill City with her old friend Ari Carcinnen and his partner DOUG. A prominent figure in the various minority groups of the city, she runs an undercity bar named ‘Lilia’s’. Raised by her father, following her mother’s descent into insanity and subsequent transformation into a shadow monster, she identifies as she/her and as lesbian, but is not in a committed relationship.

So yeah, those are my (second set of) OC’s, I suppose, do whatever you like with them, should you be so inclined. I’ll probably post stuff about them occasionally, and I’ll make sure to tag them appropriately :)
