the Meat Life College Football Preview Part 2 - 2023 Season Preview

Week 0 of the 2023 College Football season is upon us! The offseason was full of conference realignment news, but we are finally going to get some actual football. It will be the final season of the four-team playoff, with next season welcoming a massive 12-team playoff. This will likely also be the final season of the Pac 12 athletic conference, featuring a loaded conference race that should be interesting all year.

Per usual, I'll go over some Heisman candidates, some Power Five Conference predictions, the College Football Playoff predictions, and to close out the outlook for the Oklahoma Sooners this season.

Heisman Hopefuls

The Frontrunner: Caleb Williams - QB USC The Contenders: Michael Penix Jr - QB Washington, Drake Maye - QB North Carolina, Marvin Harrison Jr - WR Ohio State, Blake Corum - RB Michigan, JJ McCarthy - QB Michigan The Darkhorses: Jordan Travis - QB Florida State, Quinn Ewers - QB Texas, Sam Hartman - QB Notre Dame the Meat Life Prediction: Michael Penix Jr - QB Washington

I respect Caleb Williams' talent. He has been by far the most talented QB in the country. But a lot of factors against him here. There has only been Archie Griffin of Ohio State as a repeat winner of the Heisman and that was almost 50 years ago. Also, I'll touch on this later, but Williams and USC are in probably the most competitive conference race in college football this year.

I like Washington's offense with Penix as the triggerman and I think Washington's defense will outperform USC's defense. As much as the QB position isn't related to the defense, the team's success is directly tied to a Heisman candidate's chances to win. And I'm banking on Washington in the Pac 12.

The other candidates, I think Drake Maye will have a great year statistically. Marvin Harrison Jr is going to kill defenses in the Big Ten like he did last year. And the two Michigan guys will get a mention because I think it might be a special year for Michigan this year. I threw Jordan Travis on there as a darkhorse because there's a lot of hype behind him and Florida State. Also Quinn Ewers is on there just to cover my bases. Personally I think Texas might plateau but there will be hype behind Ewers early, especially if there is a good showing against their Week 2 matchup with Alabama. Notre Dame have transfer QB Sam Hartman from Wake Forest providing a lot of experience and big play potential.

Power Five Conference Predictions

ACC

The Frontrunner: Florida State Seminoles The Contenders: Clemson Tigers, North Carolina Tar Heels The Darkhorse: Miami Hurricanes the Meat Life Prediction: Florida State Seminoles

I forgot and most people might have forgotten that Clemson actually won the ACC last year. With the coverage of their offensive struggles, you wouldn't know it. I listed the Seminoles as the frontrunners though, because the national rankings have them ahead of Clemson and FSU has the proven QB returning in Jordan Travis. Clemson will be moving to sophomore QB Cade Klubnik after DJ Uiagalelei transferring to Oregon State (more on that later). Klubnik had mixed results, performing well against UNC in the ACC Championship game but throwing 2 INTs against Tennessee in the bowl game. So I think this will be Florida State's year to win the ACC.

Drake Maye might have a special year statistically for North Carolina, but UNC's defense might hold that team back from winning the conference. And then there is the U. Will HC Mario Cristobal figure things out this season? I think they will improve but not enough to win the conference. With the ACC going divisionless, it gives Miami less of a chance at a conference championship game berth.

Big Ten

The Frontrunner: Michigan Wolverines The Contenders: Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions The Darkhorse: Wisconsin Badgers the Meat Life Prediction: Michigan Wolverines

This could be a special year for Michigan. They have won the Big Ten and beat Ohio State back to back years. They have gone to the playoff the last couple years. Now, it'll get interesting with the self-imposed suspension of HC Jim Harbaugh in the non-con schedule for supposed NCAA recruitment violation (Google Jim Harbaugh cheeseburger, good stuff), but I think they will be fine. It is Michigan's conference to lose, and I don't think they will come close to losing it.

Ohio State, once a consistent winner against Michigan, now is a question mark in their biggest game. and the other big contender Penn State usually performs well against Ohio State but struggles against Michigan. Ohio State also has to replace CJ Stroud at QB - they have yet to name the successor. Whoever they name will have tremendous WRs to throw to led by Marvin Harrison Jr.

I put Wisconsin as a darkhorse, I like new HC Luke Fickell. They will be super interesting because they will be installing a new offense with transfer Tanner Mordecai at QB. Mordecai started his college career at OU but made his bread throwing for thousands of yards at SMU. The Big Ten still has divisions, so Wisconsin already rules the West division and will make things interesting in the conference championship game.

Big 12

The Frontrunner: Kansas State Wildcats The Contenders: Texas Longhorns, TCU Horned Frogs, Oklahoma Sooners The Darkhorse: Texas Tech Red Raiders the Meat Life Prediction: Kansas State Wildcats

Is it wild that the Big 12 has had three different winners in the last three years? And they also had a team in the national title game and it wasn't the school that won the conference. For years of Oklahoma dominance, it has been kind of fun watching the conference race the past few years.

As far as Kansas State, they will have QB Will Howard do his best Collin Klein impression (with Klein as his OC!), especially since RB Deuce Vaughn has moved on to the NFL. They have four returning offensive linemen and a ton of experience back on the defense, so they look good to repeat.

TCU was that team in the national title game last year, getting waxed by Georgia. But before then they had a magical season with QB Max Duggan last year. Their biggest question will be replacing Duggan, possibly with Chandler Morris who Duggan replaced early in the season due to injury.

Texas is a contender but I honestly have my doubts. Superstar RB Bijan Robinson moved on to the NFL so it's QB Quinn Ewers' show. Ewers declined in performance when they ran Robinson less last season. Texas has had only one 10-win season in the ten years since Mack Brown was fired and HC Steve Sarkisian has never won 10 games in his coaching career. That can change, sure. But Texas' problem in the post-Mack Brown era has always been performing against teams they are supposed to win against. The big games they are always up for, but the smaller stage they usually have struggled.

I'll get to Oklahoma at the end of my entry.

Pac 12

The Frontrunner: USC Trojans The Contenders: Washington Huskies, Utah Utes, Oregon Ducks The Darkhorse: Oregon State Beavers, Colorado Buffaloes the Meat Life Prediction: Washington Huskies

What a shame. This could be the best season of football in the history of the Pac 12. This could also be the last season the Pac 12 ever plays, with 8 of its members leaving after this season and the future of the rest of the teams in limbo. As far as the football, this conference probably has the most QB depth in the country with Caleb Williams, Michael Penix Jr, Bo Nix, DJ Uiagalelei, and Shedeur Sanders. I picked the Huskies to win as discussed in the Heisman conversation.

I'm probably biased against USC, but they relied heavily on their defense getting turnovers while getting shredded for big yards. That philosophy isn't really sustainable, so I think it might come back to bite them, especially in the big games. USC couldn't beat Utah in two tries last season and the Utes are the defending champs. Utah could be in trouble early this season though, with the health status of QB Cam Rising in doubt the first few weeks of the season. Also quietly QB Bo Nix is having a renaissance and should push the Ducks in contention this year.

I put in Oregon State and Colorado in the darkhorse, one because the Pac 12 is going divisionless for their last year, and two because of the interesting storylines. Oregon State will be starting QB DJ Uiagalelei, freshly transferred from Clemson. The new scenery could be good for him. And I cannot mention Colorado without new HC Deion Sanders. He resurrected Jackson State in his short tenure there, and is planning to do the same in Colorado. They might not be great this season, but it'll be entertaining to see how far they go.

SEC

The Frontrunner: Georgia Bulldogs The Contenders: Alabama Crimson Tide, Tennessee Volunteers, LSU Tigers The Darkhorses: Texas A&M Aggies, South Carolina Gamecocks the Meat Life Prediction: Georgia Bulldogs

Some of the contenders have a lot in common, breaking in new QBs.

The defending conference champ Georgia has the most talent in the toughest conference in America, but they have to replace QB Stetson Bennett who finally graduated and moved on to the NFL. Carson Beck was named the game 1 starter and he'll have a superb supporting cast including all-world TE Brock Bowers. It will be a grind especially getting Tennessee on the road this season, but Georgia is in the driver seat.

Alabama will still have a talented squad, but they will also be breaking in a new QB as Heisman winner Bryce Young has moved on to the NFL as well. HC Nick Saban seems pretty chill for someone breaking in a new QB. Tennessee will also be breaking in QB Joe Milton to replace Hendon Hooker in HC Josh Heupel's high powered offense. It will be year 2 for HC Brian Kelley and LSU, fresh off an SEC championship game berth. They will be a force again.

I put Texas A&M as a darkhorse because of the talent. But they have a similar problem that Texas has where 10 wins are rare and it seems they can only get up for the big games. South Carolina also a darkhorse. I like HC Shane Beamer a lot and they have QB Spencer Rattler coming back after a strong second half of the year last season.

College Football Playoff Predictions

The Frontrunners: Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, Alabama Crimson Tide The Contenders: LSU Tigers, Tennessee Volunteers, USC Trojans, Washington Huskies, Penn State Nittany Lions, Florida State Seminoles, Clemson Tigers The Darkhorses: Kansas State Wildcats, Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies, Utah Utes, Oregon Ducks, Notre Dame the Meat Life Prediction: Semifinal teams - Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan Wolverines, LSU Tigers, Washington Huskies Championship game - Georgia vs Michigan Champion - Michigan

This may sound crazy given what two-time defending champion Georgia has done, but I think it is Michigan's year. Harbaugh will give a big eff-you to the NCAA by winning it all. They have the most experience in the key positions, particularly JJ McCarthy at QB. They will lean heavily on their RBs Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards. I just think it's time. And for Georgia, it is hard for a team to win three championships in a row - something that hasn't been done since Minnesota in the 1930s. I think Alabama will lose against Georgia in the SEC championship game, catapulting LSU into the CFP. And I'm big on Washington out of the Pac 12.

The 2023 Outlook for the Oklahoma Sooners

In the aftermath of getting burned by Lincoln Riley leaving to coach USC, 2022 was rough for Oklahoma. HC Brent Venables salvaged a recruiting class and got some key transfers but ultimately had a 6-7 season, something that has become very rare for the Oklahoma program. The Sooners just didn't know how to finish games off. In five of those losses were by one score, two of them having the lead at one point in the fourth quarter.

If they are able to figure out how to close games and keep QB Dillion Gabriel healthy (the two games he missed due to injury were blow out losses to TCU and Texas), the Sooners will improve. Now, they have a more capable backup QB in freshman Jackson Arnold, so that should open things up a little bit for Gabriel. Personnel wise, they do have more depth elsewhere as well, particularly at RB (Marcus Major and Javontae Barnes joined by Kalib Hicks and Gavin Sawchuk) and offensive and defensive lines. They will probably have a depth issue at WR replacing Marvin Mims, although they still have Jalil Farooq, Drake Stoops, and Gavin Freeman.

Compared to previous seasons, the schedule does look a little on the weaker side with Arkansas State, SMU, and Tulsa in the non-con and then Big 12 newbies Cincinnati, UCF, and BYU.

If we see improvement, I see the Sooners go 9-3 and contend for a Big 12 Championship Game berth. I would consider that a success and a good season. These things need to be incremental in some cases, and since they are building a foundation over time, I'm willing to be patient. If the Sooners get to 10+ wins, I would consider that beyond expectations and it will be a great building block going into the SEC next year.

But I completely hope they win the Big 12 on their way out of the conference. Let's grab that trophy back!

quinn moves slightly so it's easier for archie to remove his pants, cheeks flushing like it's the first time. there's always something in when they do this that has her blushing, a little embarrassed. she often attributes it to remembering their first time, how nervous and shy she had been, how far she has come from that. quinn leans down to kiss archie softly, resting her hand against his shoulder as she reaches under her dress to push her underwear down her thighs. she sighs into the kiss as she kicks them off, settling down against his thighs. quinn laughs breathlessly when archie's hips press up into her own and her fingers find his hair easily, grasping at the back to keep them both steady. her heart is racing as she looks at him, eyes wide and full of love and lust, need and desire coursing through her at a phenomenal rate. quinn's eyes close and she tips her head back, lips parting in a silent gasp as her hips roll against his. "oh my god, stop," she mutters, blindly reaching down to cover his mouth with her hand. with a gasp, quinn lifts her head to look at her boyfriend, slipping her thumb into his mouth. "don't want you to call me anything," she mutters, leaning in to nudge their noses together as she presses her thumb down against his tongue. "just want you to fuck me and make me cum all over your cock. think you can do that, baby?"

archie raises his hands when she starts to drag his shirt from his frame, making it easier for her to remove the restricting material. with that, he keeps his promise; ridding himself of his pants with a simple raise of his hips, pushing them down and off somewhere beyond the bed. "fuck me." he gasps out into her skin, fingers slipping and grasping and squeezing at her hips, now rock hard against her frame. quinn has never wanted to see somebody more after sleeping with them. she has always prided herself on being a one and done kind of girl. she got what she wanted, and hopefully so did they, and they parted ways. she never once found herself wanting it again. she had managed to convince herself that she just wanted to give archie what he gave her, pleasure beyond any reasonable doubt. but now that she is actually sitting beside him, quinn knows it is more than that. she can't hide it from herself any longer. she wants him in every single conceivable way. the things she wants to do with and for archie are astounding, it rocks her to her very core. she needs to do something about it. quinn reaches up to stroke the backs of her fingers across his jaw, humming softly. it's a good start, just to touch him. even in front of his family. it doesn't deter her, though. she shudders through it and his touch against her hair, leaning closer to him. "well, lucky for me," she mutters, small smile tugging at her mouth. it grows quickly because of course it does, archie is making her do and say things she wouldn't normally. this should be no exception. "i kind of want to find out if i just... made up how good it was. you know? sometimes things seem really incredible when you do it once buit then when you do it again, it's sort of average." she says it so casually, purposely in a way that anybody else overhearing wouldn't be able to work out the true intent of her words. "i just need to know if it really was that incredible." her gaze drifts to his mouth, inhaling sharply. she knows it was incredible, genuinely the best she has ever had. any excuse to do it again, though.

never in his life had he felt this comfortable and secure with anyone he'd slept with before. which was a relatively sad notion, but one archie hadn't paid particular attention to, until right now. there's something about her that makes him feel confident and sure of himself, he figures he could say and do anything, be entirely himself and she would be just fine with that. enjoy it, in fact. it's one of a plethora of reasons why he catches himself staring at her, enjoying her company more than he figures he can admit. not that he probably needs to, if the narrowed gaze filled with suspicion his twin sister launches at him is anything to go by. not once had she approved of any of his relationships in the past, if they could even be labelled as such. he wondered how she'd berate him if she knew that he and quinn had slept together. he was hardly ashamed of it, after all, can barely contain his smirk filled with cheek and excitement when she's so quickly putting two and two together. the pair had always been good at reading each other, and now was no exception. This is based upon the stand alone story from Enrico Marini featuring a whole new look for Harley Quinn whilst Joker seeks to find her the best birthday present. The Joker within this verse seems to genuinely love the Jester even if she is hard to get.

It was Harley’s Birthday and a failed heist meant Joker had turned up empty handed trying to find the perfect gift for her as Bats had thrown it into a river. Aside from that the scene was set; red, green and white decorations covered the room all that was missing was a present but a last minute joke from a new recruit led him to the punchline, and at least some present for his girl, Joker just hoped she liked itThe goons gathered round a cake, a huge smile iced into it with lots of candles as she entered. They sang Happy Birthday as the jester smiled sweetly telling them all how adorable they looked before blowing out all the candles. She counted them all but there were a few short. Running a hand down the Joker’s chest she told her puddin’ how there were only sixteen candles on the cake, when really she was twenty five. The Joker reassured her that it wasn’t an error, because she was always going to be his sweet sixteen.

The comment sweetened her up, and he needed that as he handed over a cortier case, wishing her a Happy Birthday as he did so. She asked him whether he was serious as she took the case from him. Before she had a chance to comment, Joker made a sly joke that he’d made it with his own fingers. He couldn’t be serious, and well he wasn’t, he had tried previously, but this was a gift he’d have to make on the spot. As Harley opened the case, she was horrified, for it wasn’t a cortier necklace, but a set of teeth strung together to act like a necklace. How did he think that would be a way to express his love for her? It was lousy and pathetic and the only thing worth doing with it was throwing it at his head. He complained, asking her to calm down, calling her honey in an attempt to keep her sweet. But right now, Harley wasn’t going to let him honey her, he didn’t love her, that’s how she felt amd in frustration had taken her baseball bat to the birthday cake that had been made for her. she ran off crying, leaving the celebrations, convinced the Joker didn’t love her at all.

After shooting down most of his men, as they had failed him, Joker joined Harley in their private suite, where she was watching the news. A forty-five carat diamond known as the Blue Cat was in Gotham City, set to be sold at Bernie’s Auction House the following Saturday. With an estimated worth of fifty million dollars, Harley found the present she wanted for her birthday. Joker appeared bored as Harley became overly excited, almost bouncing in her seat to let him know what she wanted. He was far more bothered about changing the channel, he found the news boring, and would rather be watching cartoons. Snatching the remote off her he changed the channel to Gotham Gossip, which annoyed Harley. She was quickly silenced, however, as the gossip channel had new news on Bruce Wayne, as they speculated whether the billionaire’s playboy lifestyle was over.

It wasn’t interesting news to Harley though, she had her beau, and Bruce Wayne was just another ‘rich bastard ‘ in Gotham. She wanted to go back to the diamond, but it wasn’t her call to make. After all, the gossip channel seemingly had the news that one woman was calling for a hundred million dollars simply because Bruce Wayne was supposedly the father of her child. Having denied paternity, she wanted to backdate the child support he owed according to woman. To the Joker, this was news, labelling Bruce Wayne a little devil, claiming he knew the man had some skeletons in his closet. Whilst Harley was listening to this garbage though she made herself comfortable, resting her head in the Joker’s lap, her feet kicked up in the air. But it seemed Joker had been thinking more than he’d let on as he let Harley know he’d figured out a way to get her present. She beamed up at him, letting him know that really she loved her Puddin’ sooo much.

But his plan wasn’t what she thought as the alleged daughter of Bruce Wayne was kidnapped by the Joker and he’d been spending more and more time with her, leaving Harley out. Opting to try and confront him on the matter, the jester folded her arms commenting that he’d been getting rather cozy with the little brat. But he told her not to be jealous of the kid, no matter how atypical she was.

It seemed eventually though, the male found some time for Harley as Archie, the only remaining original henchman Joker had, had been preparing Sushi for the pair. the meal was laid out over her body as presumably she had her own ideas for dessert. Whilst he’d been waiting the Joker had been playing on their grand piano so it was time to drop the Beethoven and move his butt in her direction. He was quick to correct her, as he’d actually been playing Rachmaninoff, but it didn’t matter she just wanted him to play with her instead. After waiting a moment, she apologised for hurting his feelings, but he could play Beef Stroganoff later but the Joker had already left. She cried out after him, as she was getting cold but after no response, and with the Joker nowhere to be seen she became increasingly frustrated, declaring he couldn’t leave her like this, but apparently her Puddin’ could. Being abandoned in favour of Mr Wayne and the little brat Harley took matters into her own hands.

Waiting on top of one of the many pipes throughout the facility that the brat had been kept in, she simply smiled upon seeing the little girl. With a smirk on her face and a bat in hand she told the girl that she knew she would have been trouble right from the start. The girl started pleading, asking to go home to her mom, asking Harley to please let her go. But that wasn’t the plan. Harley faked a pout, asking the baby girl to stop pleading before Harley got all emo and messed up her mascara. It was clear the girl knew she was no baby though, which was fortunate as Harley was no babysitter.There was nothing she’d rather do than make the girl go away but the Joker needed her, on her birthday of all days.

She didn’t know why it was so important, but it was a part of his strategic plan he never told her. Harley was sure he had it all figured out because he was a freakin’ genius but the girl wasn’t going to let her finish that thought out loud. The girl kicked her shin and Harley let out a cry, gripping her by the wrist so she couldn’t run off. Harley told the little monkey that they had to get something straight. Mista’ J was hers, and the kid was to stay away and stop charming him with her eyes as no Stockholm Syndrome would be allowed between the kid and Mista’ J. She was corrected, as the kid told her that Lima Syndrome was when the kidnapper falls for the hostage, the opposite of Stockholm Syndrome. With a careful threat with her bat, she declared the brat too smart for her own good threatening that if she wouldn’t leave the Joker alone, she wouldn’t have any eyes. Harley simply dragged the kid back to her cellar before she did something the Joker would make her regret.

It was the night of the auction of the Blue Cat diamond, and Harley and Joker were snuggled on the couch watching the auction together. Harley sighed, commenting how beautiful the diamond was as she rested her head against him. He smirked asking her again whether she wanted it. Questioning whether he was being serious the Joker seemingly picked up the phone, asking her to watch him. Talking into the phone he offered sixty million dollars for the bloody stone. At first Harley seemed ecstatic until she quickly realised they didn’t have sixty million dollars. Looking worried she told her puddin’ to wait but then he showed her the phone, as it wasn't connected to the line. Clearly he was joking, and labelled her stupid for not picking up on that. Harley tried to smile with a sheepish giggle. They continued to watch the auction together as it got tense, according to Joker it was all up to Bruce but Harley simply didn’t understand. But Bruce Wayne didn’t win the bids. At sixty-five million dollars another bidder had pipped him to the post but then all hell broke loose.

The lights turned off in the auction as a chandelier crashed to the floor and in the next moment it was clear the Blue Cat was stolen as the information of the theft was broadcasted during the auction. The Joker shouted at the television before picking it up and smashing it to the ground for good measure, claiming that was what happened when you worked with amateurs. He asked Harley to bring him a phone as he needed to make a call to which she joked, offering him the one she already knew to be broken. After getting an actual phone, however, the Joker tapped in a certain number and dialled straight through to Batman.

He’d agreed to Batman at an abandoned factory. He’d brought a lot of people there so Harley simply sat on the sidelines, steps made quite comfortable seats when you didn’t have another choice. She had her baseball bat in hand but wasn’t feeling overly excited. Her puddin’ had promised her a birthday present and instead Joker had only gone and given himself a bunch of soldiers instead, which wasn’t cool. A smile did creep up on her face though, as Joker revealed that her present should be arriving any minute. Harley asked whether her present was what she thought it was but Joker trailed off, claiming it landed on Bruce Wayne caring about his reputation or the girl he’d previously kidnapped. Speaking of which, that actually reminded Harley to tell Joker that the surveillance monitor to their cellar, where the girl was being held captive, went black.Harley even popped a strip of bubblegum into her mouth to keep her occupied.

By the time the Joker brought the girl up from the cellar Batman had arrived. As Batman gripped the Joker she swung her bat around the back of his head telling the brute to let go of her puddin’. Joker applauded her, then asked her to frisk him to find it. Bending down, feeling through the Batman’s utility belt she slyly commented that she was digging his Bat-Butt. That was when she found the Blue Cat diamond necklace. With it in her grasps, Joker officially wished her a happy birthday. It was wonderful and proceeded to tell him that she loved him over an over planting a soft kiss to cheek. He informed her that he already knew but the celebrations were cut short by Batman. With the diamond in his possession, Joker now had to let the girl go. Harley wasn’t fully paying attention to the exchange, doing up the clasp on the necklace instead.

That was until she saw Joker point the barrel of his gun straight at the kid, knocking it out of the way with the baseball in her hand. Between them they agreed not to kill any kids. Fathers, mothers, uncles and cats were okay, but grannies and kids were off the menu. According to the Joker it was all for show to make the Batman suffer, shouting at her that she’d spoiled it but it had genuinely looked real so real to her, not that that stopped her from apologising. That’s when he turned the tables, claiming he was getting a headache and calling Harley’s existence annoying as she was supposedly never happy with anything, always opting to argue. Pointing the barrel at her he did his best to frown despite his makeup, after all they had never agreed not to kill each other. Harley protested as if he was to pull the trigger it was over between the two of them and the shot went off with a Blam!

It seemed Joker wasn’t the only one to have brought back up as Catwoman pushed Harley to the ground out of the way of the shot, grabbing the Blue Cat necklace as she went. Despite being on the floor she reached out to grab Catwomans’ ankle, ready to swing her bat at her demanding she’d give the necklace back, but a boot to the face and Harley was out cold, the diamond Selina’s to keep. Harley’s hadn’t seen the rest of what happened that night, only awoke in the factory with a pounding headache and Archie the clown at her side. Mista’ J hadn’t been seen since. Without the Joker around, Harley spent a lot of her time crying, trying to move past the heartache of what she believed was bereavement, trying to spend her better days convincing Archie to become the next Crime Boss in honour of the Joker. Despite the pain she was feeling, Harley was trying to find a way to continue. But in his own twisted way, the Joker always seemed to find a way to come back - even supposedly back from the ‘dead’.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex defied instructions from the Queen not to go public with their bombshell announcement they are to step back as senior royals until details of their plans had been fully discussed, it has been claimed.

The Guardian understands that the couple went ahead regardless, sending a copy of their explosive statement to Prince Charles and Prince William just 10 minutes before it was released on Instagram, and without any further consultation.

Buckingham Palace was said to have been “blindsided” by the release of the statement while talks were at such a very early stage. Senior family members were reportedly left feeling “disappointed” and “hurt”.

As myriad questions remained unanswered, the sequence of events leading to the announcement emerged.

Harry originally contacted his father about spending more time in Canada and America just before Christmas, but was told he needed to come up with a thought-out plan, according to details first reported by royal editor Robert Jobson on the Evening Standard.

He then sent a draft proposal about his planned new role to Charles early in the new year, but was informed more time was required to think through the complex implications, particularly over funding.

Harry then sought a meeting with the Queen as soon as the couple and son Archie returned from their six-week break from royal duties. He was told the Queen would only meet him after he had discussed the plans in detail with Charles, sources told Jobson.

The planned meeting was blocked by courtiers, but the Queen is said to have made it clear the couple should not go public at this time.

No senior royal knew in advance the wording of the statement, penned personally by the couple, or that it was about to be released.

Amid fallout over the news, there was said to be a willingness at the palace to make the new roles work. But, senior advisers have stressed, there are “complicated issues” to work through.

In their statement on Wednesday, Harry and Meghan said they intended to “step back”, split their time between the UK and North America, and work to become “financially independent”. A new “progressive role” would see them freed from palace constraints, allowed to earn income, promote their causes while also “continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages”.

A number of royal commentators have criticised the decision, with some describing it as the biggest surprise since the Panorama interview with Diana, Princess of Wales.

Dickie Arbiter, a former palace press secretary, said of the couple’s actions: “It seems to be a succession of doing things their own way, which is the wrong way.” Royal author Penny Junor said it had echoes of when Diana announced she was stepping back from 50 of her charities without consulting anybody. “The problem is that they are not working for themselves, they are working for a family firm, and to be making announcements of this sort without consulting is beyond bizarre”.

But Meghan received support from her close friend Jessica Mulroney, Canadian stylist and wife of Canadian TV presenter, Ben Mulroney, who posted a quote attributed to US singer and filmmaker Gina Carey, saying: “A strong woman looks a challenge in the eye and gives it a wink.”

On their new website, sussexroyal.com the couple said they received just 5% of their funding for official duties from public money through the sovereign grant, the formula for funding the monarchy that replaced the civil list in 2012.

The remaining 95% of their funding comes from Prince Charles’s private income from the Duchy of Cornwall. However, it is understood that the 5% figure does not include travel expenses or their round-the-clock security detail.

They will also hand-pick selected journalists to cover their engagements, and no longer participate in the “royal rota”, which allowed accredited royal correspondents from UK newspapers access to their events.

There has been no further explanation of how they intend to become “financially independent”.

Media organisations often seek to justify criticism of the couple by claiming public interest because they receive public funding. They may hope relinquishing this funding will strip away this justification, and grant them greater power over protecting their privacy.

Harry inherited an estimated £7m from his late mother’s estate, which will have grown with investment. He and William also inherited her dresses and valuable jewellery. He is also thought to have received money from a trust fund left by the Queen Mother, although the exact amount is not known.

David McClure, author of Royal Legacy, about royal finances, estimated the couple could be worth up to £18m in total. He warned: “The history of senior royals making money – the two is a toxic mix. It hasn’t worked well in the past.”

In 2002 the Earl and Countess of Wessex both stood down from their businesses, in television and PR, after accusations they were cashing in on their royal status. Sophie Wessex was caught in a “fake sheikh” sting by an undercover journalist trying to bid for business, which led to a major review by the palace of the royals’ commercial interests.

So far neither the couple, nor Buckingham Palace, has shed any light on the high costs of security to the taxpayer, which runs to more than £100m a year for the whole royal family. The couple’s website states they are classified as “internationally protected people” requiring armed security from the Metropolitan police.

While in the UK, it seems the couple expect their bill to be met by taxpayers. If in Canada, which is a realm, it may fall to Canadian taxpayers. There is no answer to who would pay if they lived in the US. Shuttling across the Atlantic would significantly increase their security bill.

Meanwhile, wax figures of the couple were removed from the royal set at Madame Tussauds in London. Steve Davies, general manager at the attraction, said they would stand separately. “As two of our most popular and well-loved figures they will of course remain an important feature at Madame Tussauds London as we watch to see what the next chapter holds for them.”

asshat was their version of 'he who must not be named', and archie could say he despised him quite as much as he despised voldemort too. even more so, considering how truly evil archie believed he was. he was just grateful that mia had eventually seen through him and realised the one for her was right in front of her nose the whole time. "he really was evil. like truly...an actual monster among us. i don't understand how he even existed. he was..." he cuts himself off, mainly because he knows he could go there all day long, and there really was no point to it. "tristan is perfect for you. i'm so glad you finally realised who your soulmate actually was. the man who actually thinks about what you want, not guilt trips you into...moving abroad for him." he shakes his head, his hatred potent and palpable, written all over his features. it dissipates though, once mia had vocalised what she'd noticed. his skin flushes pink, and he can't disguise the smile that just thinking about quinn causes. "i've known her...as long as i've known you. longer than i knew every tom, dick and eleanor that i dated..." he snorts, shakes his head and forces his gaze down into his lap. "she's the chillest person i've ever known. always been there, you know...right by my side and i'd never quite..." he shrugs, exhaling deeply. "i'm worried that i've left it too long...that maybe it'll seem like she's some option...but i think - like, i think i've always felt the same way for her. this...innate, deep, warm love...i just hadn't realised then what love should've felt like. thought it was all explosions and volatile and shouting and making up and anxiety...not what - not what she gives me, you know?"

mia watched her friend and raised her eyebrows. "number one, i'm okay...now i'm okay. i can see you worrying. tristan is the most...amazing man i've ever known. i've known him as long as i've known you, archer. i mean, i knew asshat that long, too, but this is different. tristan has never...ever raised his voice at me nor has he raised a hand to me. he would never alienate me from you or from my other family and friends by taking me to a foreign country so no one could see me. he would never leave me." her heart swelled and she sighed. then he was listing off what he wanted in a woman and she quirked a brow again, "listen, i know you...i can see there's someone in there already. what's her name? come on...if you've already got someone in mind, i need to know what she's like," she laughed and set all of her painting supplies down. her last husband used to paint and maybe she took it up because of him, but in a way to get through her trauma. it helped. in a big way. but now she was focused on archie and his happiness.

Jim Shooter, Angel Medina, Mike Grell Among Top Creators At Wizard World Chicago, October 15-17

Jim Shooter, the former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, Matt Hawkins, President/COO of Top Cow since 1998, Angel Medina, artist on The Incredible Hulk, Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man, and Mike Grell, writer and artist on iconic strips and characters from Superboy to Tarzan to Batman, headline Artist Alley at Wizard World Chicago on October 15-17. The three will be joined by more than 100 others of international, national and local acclaim at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center.

Suits is a walk and talk drama series that is set in a New York City law firm. The lead and the support characters are smart and witty, and radiate a professional charisma in the show.
