Sydcarmy fake dating where everyone (mainly Richie) is convinced they are dating and won’t shut the fuck up about it. So they start pretending their dating just to get everyone off their backs plus they think it would be hilarious to fool everyone. Arguably Kim/Harry works out only bc Kim is a centrist bino and he'll never try to change Harry as a person, he'll only keep him from dying every five seconds

the kids online safety act passed the u.s. senate.
long story short (for anyone who hadn't heard of this before) the kids online safety act, aka kosa, is a bill that will censor online content and resources for lgbtq+ matters, reproductive healthcare, activism (INCLUDING PALESTINE AND LIKELY OTHER CRISES GOING ON LIKE IN CONGO OR SUDAN), mental health, etc. everywhere--its effects likely won't be contained to just america.
today, july 30th, 2024, the senate passed it 91-3. it has officially moved to the house of representatives.
is this a pretty massive setback? yes. do you have every right to be scared, sad, angry, or whatever else about this happening? absolutely. but should you give up hope completely? NO!
even though kosa passed the senate, the house is on break/august recess at the moment. we have around an entire month to get emails, calls, and faxes in to house reps, maybe more depending on when they decide to vote on it.
should it pass the house and get signed into law, we still have a whole 18 months before it actually goes into effect. this is plenty of time for digital rights orgs (e.g. fight for the future, the electronic frontier foundation) and other groups that oppose it to file a lawsuit against it. even if, worst-case scenario, it flies through the house immediately after the recess ends, we can still fight this up to march 2026.
so, yes, remember what's at stake here, but also remember that it's not over yet. we lost a battle, not the war.
below are some resources to learn more about kosa and how to contact your reps (first link) + a page that lets you directly contact progressive house reps, sign an open letter opposing the bill, and view others' testimonies against it (second link):
FIGHT. FIGHT. FIGHT.

Sept 11 is such an eventful day. tbh. maybe I'll write some longer post abt Fujimori he's a complex figure for sure. imho a genius corrupt thief who applied the move fast break things at nation state level and he did for real break a lot of things that were still to this day paying for. i'm not sure we can fix them now without massive energy and power behind it. the forced sterilization scandal was also batshit crazy and it's insane they freed him recently. he should have died in prison. still, this is the end of an era for this country.

Aperçu of the Week
"The constant happiness is curiosity."
(Alice Munro, Canadian winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature and master of the short story, died last week)
Bad News of the Week
While the world's attention is increasingly focused on the war in Gaza, another drama continues - and is even getting worse: the war in Ukraine. More than two years ago, Vladimir Putin's Russia invaded the sovereign country in south-eastern Europe with an unprovoked war of aggression. Several hundred thousand people have died since then, the country lies in ruins, millions are on the run at home and abroad. While Ukraine was initially able to successfully defend itself against the seemingly overpowering enemy and even recapture territory, thanks in part to massive military aid from the West, the tide now seems to be turning.
As deliveries of weapons and ammunition from its biggest supporter, the USA, were cut off for months due to a ridiculous show of strength by Republican hardliners in the House of Representatives and are now only starting up again slowly, the Red Army is advancing again with its questionable strategy of wasting the seemingly unlimited resources of men and material. Accompanied by an endless hail of bombs and countless missile and drone attacks, which primarily target the infrastructure, but do not stop at hospitals and the like. Incidentally, this is called a war crime.
The fighting is particularly fierce around Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine (where a friend of ours comes from and where her parents still live). The Russian military is making up ground and evacuations are already taking place. This dampens my hopes that it might be enough of a "face-saving triumph" for Putin to keep the annexed Crimea and "liberate" his compatriots in Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson. I would just like to see an end to the murder, destruction and despair. Defending democracy and European values or not...
Good News of the Week
My good news this week is primarily bad news for the AfD (Alternative für Deutschland / Alternative for Germany). Just a few weeks ago, the right-wing populists were confident of making huge gains in the European Parliament elections at the beginning of June. In order to then weaken the EU from within. But since then, one scandal has followed another, each more disqualifying than the last. Which - at least I hope - should also have a deterrent effect on voters.
An overview: The Higher Administrative Court of North Rhine-Westphalia in Münster has rejected an appeal by the federal AfD. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution may continue to list them as a 'suspected case' and monitor them closely. This means nothing other than that this party officially poses a threat to Germany's constitution. That's a good thing. Incidentally, the same also applies to the "Junge Alternative", the AfD's youth organization, whose members regularly and openly interact with recognized right-wing radicals in a way that is simply forbidden for democrats who stand on the ground of the constitution.
Just like the party organization, individual "dignitaries" also provide material for negative news. For example, Petr Bystron, a member of the Bundestag, is under investigation by the public prosecutor as he is accused of bribery and money laundering on behalf of Russia. Thuringian party leader Björn Höcke is also under investigation for publicly using Nazi slogans. Then the Bundestag lifted the immunity of MP Hannes Gnauck due to disciplinary proceedings in the German armed forces. And the leading European candidate Maximilian Krah is now suspected of having been paid by the Chinese secret service. And in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica on Saturday, he made the remarkable statement "I will never say that anyone who wore an SS uniform was automatically a criminal."
Words fail you. And the voices asking whether a party ban procedure should not be initiated against such scum are getting louder and louder. When even the French right-wing populists of the Rassemblement National are considering throwing the AfD out of their group in the European Parliament because they are "too far to the right", it should send a shiver down the spine of every German. And make it impossible for them to put a cross next to the name of one of these right-wing extremists on an electoral list. There is still a little way to go until the next election day on June 9th. Just keep it up, more scandals please. Until the last person understands that democratic elections and the AfD are simply mutually exclusive.
Personal happy moment of the week
I love it when we get visitors from Québec. My wife is looking forward to seeing a friend from primary school again. And I look forward to a freshly cleaned apartment on this occasion. And we both enjoy a chat in Québecois over a cold beer in a Bavarian beer garden. Simply beautiful.
I couldn't care less...
...about the “merry month” of May. Unfortunately, this year it is just an extension of the uncomfortable April. Maybe with a few more rays of sunshine, but still pretty gray.
It's fine with me...
...that Julian Assange can appeal in the UK against his extradition to the USA. The High Court in London considers assurances from the US side to be insufficient for the WikiLeaks founder to receive a fair trial. For me - regardless of the fact that I don't like him - he should be seen as an investigative journalist rather than a spy and traitor.
As I write this...
...my mouth is watering. Because in just over a week, my wife and I will be on a short vacation for a few days. At a spa resort in Austria. Which has excellent cuisine. You can see which 5-course menu is available in the evening in the hotel app, what I do now every day. So I'm already looking forward to next week's culinary delights - while a frozen pizza bakes in the oven.
Post Scriptum
Who remembers the good old fax, which used to be the fastest way of sending documents back in the days? And then came the e-mail. Nevertheless, almost all companies and especially public authorities still have a fax number on their letterhead (and in every e-mail signature). This is now set to change at the very top. Because the German Bundestag also wants to do away with paper spitters: All remaining fax machines are to be decommissioned by June 30, 2024. However, it remains to be seen whether entries can still be submitted to the German legislature. According to a newspaper report, the application to abolish the fax machines was submitted by fax. Not a joke, but funny nonetheless.
