How do we get our kids to listen? I’ve found one of most effective ways is to create the space for dialogue in which it is a natural result of their environment and their parents’ affection. In the book Five Love Languages for Kids, author Gary Chapman articulates the main ways that human beings give and receive love; words of affirmation, physical touch, time, acts of service and gifts. We each have a primary language for receiving and giving love and, as parents it is our job to figure out what resonates with each of our kids and focus on delivering that every day.

The second part IMHO is boundaries and discipline. Balancing the discipline (weather that’s removal of a favorite video game or other privileges) with positive loving interactions is the key. We use a ratio of 4-6 positive interactions for every 1 corrective interaction. This enables us to keep our kids on track while growing their confidence, providing them a strong & resilient emotional foundation for the rest of their life.
