"Inspired by an innovative Chilean forest restoration effort, the English town of Lewes is enlisting the help of dog walkers to rewild a local nature reserve.
Heavily degraded by foot traffic, the project co-opts dogs’ tendency to run about in the woods to spread wildflower seed from saddlebags strapped to a harness around the dog’s abdomen.
The idea mimics the function that wolves once played in that part of England, roaming over vast distances getting grass and flower seeds stuck in their coat, only to fall off and germinate somewhere else.
This helter-skelter seed-spreading is actually how many plants evolved to reproduce, and it’s key to maintaining a biodiverse and native ecosystem.
“We’re really interested in rewilding processes, but they often involve reintroducing big herbivores like bison or wild horses,” said manager Dylan Walker from the Railway Land Wildlife Trust who organized the project back in 2019.
“In a smaller urban nature reserve it’s really hard to do those things. So, to replicate the effect that those animals have on the ecosystem we aimed to utilize the vast number of dog walkers that are visiting the nature reserve daily.”
The saddlebags are filled with a variety of perennial plant seeds mixed together with sand. This allows the seed to be spread for longer across larger distances, while also providing a helpful tracking sign to inform the Trust’s employees where dogs are walking.

“I signed up because it sounded like such a good fit. I was asked to place a harness on my chocolate cocker spaniel called Bertie and he ran around spreading seeds like wolves used to do many years ago,” Cressida Murray, a dog walker who regularly uses the nature reserve, told The Guardian.
Wolves were persecuted to extinction in England as early as the reign of Henry VII, who reigned during the latter third of the 15th century.
“A community-based project like this not only helps engage and teach people about the ecological impacts of wildlife but also allows us to make our wildlife and environments richer in the process,” said Walker."

He is assertive, helpful and always eager to do a job. He has the saying: "You have to be sensible if you want to stay safe." and he easily forgives other for getting cheeky with him. Despite being very friendly and good-natured, a few people such as James find him quite unsetteling because he always has"that smile"...

Where Were You She Needed You
A scream rung through the air, along with the shriek or a horse. Farmer Woodrow Bailer ran from the corn field to see a chestnut stallion bucking wildly in wheat field. He knew that damned horse, it belonged to the next farm over. The damned thing had been breaking into their property. His thoughts about having words with his neighbor where, however, interrupted when he saw a small, crumpled figure on the ground while some of the hands were running around, trying to rope the wild horse and get him away from…
“Amber!” Woodrow dropped his sickle and ran to his daughter. The stud was bucking and kicking, too close to his child. He ran and scooped up his daughter into his arms and got out of the way of the horse.
“Amber, Amber?” His dirty, gloved hand cupped her cheek, and tilted her face to him, to see her face bleeding. “Divines above…”
"Pa...Papa?"
The voice, that whimper, Bailer's heart clenched as he held her close. “It’s alright, Amber-Lily. It’s going to be alright.”
He charged to the house, practically breaking down the door. “Heidi!”
The housekeeper, a neighbor’s sixteen year old daughter, veered around the corner, her eyes widening in shock! “Amber! Mr. Woodrow, what happened?!”
“Neighbor’s horse kicked her in the head,” he growled. “Go to the barn, saddle up Arrow and get the healer from town.”
Heidi ran out the door, leaving Woodrow alone as he pressed clean clothes against his daughter’s face as some of the farm hands came in to help him take care of her, cleaning the wound and bandaging it. Some started making some food, others tried to make Amber feel better, so she wouldn’t focus on the pain.
He felt… less frightened as he made sure the horse was tied to a post in the barn. Woodrow swore to himself, that he would beat this neighbor to a pulp for letting his stud get loose. And another thought crossed his mind… where was his wife? Amber had asked for her Mama as she fought back tears, and it felt like someone clenched a fist around his heart to hear his little girl ask for a woman who was never home.
It took an hour for Heidi to return with the healer, and thankfully Amber didn’t have to lose her eye. However, she would be partially blind in that eye, and he had to stitch the cuts on her face to heal. Heidi wept as she cradled Amber in her arms, stroking her tangled black hair, hair like his own.
“Amber, what were you doing by that stud?” Bertie, one of the hands asked. “You’re usually in the woods this time of day, why were you in the field?”
The ten-year-old sniffled as she played with her hands. “I… I saw him in the field when I was gonna go out looking for mushrooms.”
“Why didn’t you get one of us?” Arch, a seasonal work questioned softly as he sliced a loaf of bread to pair with the stew they made
Amber looked at her knees. “I… I wanted to get it myself. I’d caught Arrow before by myself, so I thought… I thought I could take him back to the neighbor’s house. I… I wanted to prove I could help.”
Woodrow felt a burn in the back of his throat. As he placed a hand on top of her head, gently rubbing her hair. “Amber, you don’t have to prove you can help us, you already do. If something like this happens again, come get us. Please?”
He made sure Amber was fed, and Heidi made sure she was bathed, and dressed in a comfortable night shirt. They brought her sleeping pallet out to the living room, making a little nest for her so she was comfortable. Later in the afternoon, while the healer prepared medicine, he and the hands took the horse back to the neighbor, blood in their eyes as they told him what happened to Little Amber, a girl all the boys were fond of, and that there would be more words in the morning.
The sun was nearly set, when Collie returned to the house. Heidi was asleep on the daybed instead of returning home to her family, a quarter mile down the road, and the hands returned to the bunkhouse. Woodrow was sitting on a chair, watching his daughter breathe, his fingers twitching as he whittled a piece of wood. He didn’t even lift his head as his wife entered the house.
“Amber got hurt,” he stated simply, his deep voice booming through the room, but not waking the sleeping girls.
“And you’re surprised by that?” Collie scoffed. “The wild little beast comes home with scrapes and scratches all the time, how is this any different?”
Woodrow’s fingers tightened around the handle of the blade, and he looked up at her, his hazel eyes blazing in the light of the fire. “It wasn’t just a scratch, or scrape this time, Collie. The neighbor’s stud got in the wheat field, and our daughter wanted to try and catch him herself so she could be helpful, and the damned thing kicked her in the face.”
Collie had the decency to look frightened at this news, glancing at the sleeping bundle in her nest by the fireplace.
“The healer said she was lucky, cracked some of the bones in her face, and she’s partially blinded in her left eye. And as Heidi was getting help, and the boys and I were trying to stop the bleeding, what was she doing? Asking for her Ma. She wanted her Mama, wanted her Mama to hold her and keep her safe. So, this will be the last time I will ever ask you this question in our life, Collie. Where were you when she needed you?”

Ok so presumably (???) Fallingford was near a village that it was 'in charge of' for lack of a better phrase, and all the farmers and shopkeepers would come to Lord Hastings about queries etc etc.
Daisy and Bertie would have been raised on little English village traditions like the Maypole and May Queen (Daisy had to have been it at least once) and mayday and corn dollies and gone to village fetes and all sorts
Anyway Bertie knows how to Morris dance
(and also Daisy but back then Morris sides didn't really allow women, though they are cases of them)

Non Rail Vehicle Headcanons Part 2
Bulstrode
He's a boat-man. He spends time underwater often, so he wears scuba-diving gear.
He's brutish and unhappy.
He got his comeuppance being used as a playground for children. One time SpongeBob and Patrick came to play on him and he was utterly humiliated xD

He's a humpback whale with mechanical boat parts in his animal form.
He met the Star Fleet from Tugs before and is familiar with them.
Trevor!
He works on the farm. He is allowed to try his farmer's produce and other goods. A good taste tester!

Bill and Ben make fun of his hair because it looks like a pumpkin.
He is a frog with traction wheels on his legs in his animal form.
He is sweet, tough, and amiable.
He likes to eat pumpkins and is always excited to pick them up for Halloween.
Bulgy
So you know how Mickey Mouse is rivals with Peg Leg Pete? Bulgy is Pete and Bertie is Mickey Mouse.
He is really annoying.
He is rabidly anti-rail and protested for the railroads to shut down. He's an analogy for people on the far ends of the political spectrum.
Shire horse (like Gordon) with double decker bus wheels on his legs in his animal form.
He turned into a chicken coop. The chickens pecked and layed eggs on him :)
He eats too much hamburgers.
Terence

He's a pony with tractor wheels on his legs in his animal form.
His favorite song is, "Old MacDonald had a farm".
He has a straightforward and logical personality.
Elizabeth
She's stuffy and self-righteous.
This is due to her being locked in a shed for a long time. She lacked her social skills.
However, she is sweet and adorable once you get to know her!
She likes to play with balloons and knows how to make them.
She's a golden retriever with lorry wheels on her legs in her animal form.
She likes to blow bubbles.
She uses a strong, cherry scent of perfume.

She likes to have picnics.

Multifandom fic recs!
I mentioned doing a fic recs list the other day, and since I couldn't work on my needlepoint for a while (in which I feel like Mr. Thorton's mother doing her linen embroidering in North & South), I actually did one.
This is a multifandom recs list because it was more fun to just skim through various fandom bookmarks than to do a concentrated list for one show or whatever. Also.. some of these are for fandoms I read in and some are just fics I stumbled across one day, so they could be representative of their fandoms or not I have no idea. {insert shrug emoji here}
These are also all m/m and I think.... fairly cis? I did consider doing some f/f and trans and Rules 63 stuff but uh my bookmarks are a mess. The only fandom where I set aside some genderfuckery aside in any sort of organized fashion is Les Mis with Rule 63 stuff which maybe should get its own post. ? If people wanted?
Anyway, read the tags for each story, etc
Recs across the starboard bow, captain!
Star Wars Rogue One
waaay before the movie. I've recced this before. Chirrut/Baze
A Monk in Good Standing (Must Be in Need of a Bro)
The Eagle
Marcus/Esca
What Big Hands You Have
modern au, Esca is a size queen
From the Depths of His Heart
Canon-era werewolf AU

Breaking and Entering
Jeeves and Wooster

Bertie has lost something
Voltron (the… whatever the new cartoon’s subtitle was. Legendary Defender?)
(I know that fandom is a hotbed of strife) but I am not/was not involved in any of that. Yikes.)
the electric synthesized pop ballad of why keith can’t have nice things
a/b/o au... but like... he just wants to be good
The Vorkosigan Saga
This is Ivan/Byerly because that is the only ship that matters
Twenty-Year Man
Ivan's getting older and having some realizations despite himself. Also... side note but... carefully and cynically yearning Byerly is a delight.
Original, historical
Darling and the Cinderella Club
Teen Wolf --HOWEVER! These are all Teen Wolf/SGA fusion
Why? Because the space marine vibes are impeccable
All Sterek

The Laurels of Doing is Enough
modern AU
True Love's Kiss
modern AU but with magic
Adequate
The first in a small Star Trek AU series that is cute
A Reversal of Celestial Mechanics
Canon-era, Enjolras takes Grantaire up on his offers… offers Grantaire didn’t realize he was making lol
There is one where Grantaire is fucking Courf while they both discuss/hint at his feelings for Enjolras but I cannot begin to express the chaos of my bookmarks so.... couldn't find it.
And finally...
Check, Please
Dex/Nursey
Bless This Mess and Call It a Home
Magic AU
The Most Room in Our Hearts
Dex sees Nursey holding some kids and gets Feelings about it
(there is a small nurseydex commentfic with sort of a similar bent but like so many things, it was posted to tumblr then deleted so is now lost forever.)
ok this one is uhhh read the notes and tags. It is known to me and @vashti-lives as the one we don’t talk about aka the 1950s coal miners AU
Strange Lovers
And to finish up, a Ransom/Holster kink/getting together fic that was actually the first thing I read for this fandom.

bertie my friend bertie what is your IDEAL date
>You find Bertie in his kitchen, wearing a Kiss The Cook apron and very carefully making macarons. He is delicate about it for a 7 foot tall hunk.
"IDEAL date? Hmm. It's probably cheating to say any date with Basil, isn't it?"
>He finishes assembling his sheet of cookies for baking and slides it into the oven.
"Well, I'd start at the farmer's market. Maybe during one of those little events they throw, pick up some stuff we can't usually get. Have a nice walk around. Then we go back hive and cook dinner together. Spend the rest of the night doing whatever they want."

I want some good Stewards and Land Agents
I am reading some 19th century Irish and Anglo-Irish literature and the steward or land agent being villain keeps popping up. The past few years I’ve been reading historical romance novels, which have an overpopulation of taller than average dukes and earls and the only time an agent is mentioned is when they’ve been swindling the main character’s father. I have watched Downton Abbey minimum 3 times and I like Tom Branson. However, Robert makes Tom the agent as a way to give him a job that is a step up from being a servant and keep Sybie around. So I’ve found one story where the agent a sympathetic character, but the set up for him and Sybil is “daughter of a lord and a servant,” not agent or steward as a MC. I also like Bertie Pelham for Edith on a character level, but the drama of their story steps up when he becomes a lord, not on living as an agent and a magazine owner.
I think it extremely unlikely that I’ll encounter any 19th century literature that focuses on the life of a land agent or steward, though it would be interesting to see.
In historical romance, we see lords and ladies paired, we see lords and servants paired, the very occasional young lady with stable boy / footman, fortune hunters and wealthy widows, occasionally a crime lord and lady etc. And as I said, lots and lots of dukes. But there is more to 18th and 19th century British society than servants and aristocrats, and I would like to see some middlemen in the mix. How about an ethical steward desperately trying to protect the farmers from his lord’s greedy rent raising? Maybe the lord’s family stays in their country house, and the young lordlings cause trouble. Maybe the lord and the big family isn’t one to cause trouble but are nosy and the agent just wants to spend time with the local doctor?
I see a lot of potential stories that could be dramatic and romantic without necessarily having one half of the couple being presented at court or being ridiculously rich.
Any recommendations for me? Or should I just start writing what I want to read?

Anthony's Stupid Daily Blog (541): Sat 9th Sep 2023
The whole city stank of shit today. This is because the fucking farmers chose today to start spreading all the manure over their fields despite it being one of the hottest days of the year. Even though I pledged not to post any of the jokes / observations I write as part of my “Don’t Break The Chain” challenge I’ve realized that there are going to be some days where fuck all happens to me and I’m forced to rely on the mad bollocks I’ve written in order to fill up a blog. Well today is one of those days. Horse shit smells unpleasant at the best of times but MELTING SHIT is a whole other story. The smell was the kind of thing you would expect a fly’s apartment to smell like after he returned from a hard days work and wanted to relax by lighting up some candles that would help the fly relax by filling the room with a soothing turd aroma. There must be a joke candle you can buy for someone you don’t like and tell them that it’ll will be a nice chocolatey flavour but when they light it up it actually smells like shit. Imagine if you had one of those candles in the house and you were planning on giving it to someone as a prank but then there was a power cut and you needed to light the candles so that you wouldn’t be spending the rest of the day in total darkness. What is really love to see would be a range of Bertie Bots Every Flavour Candles. Some nights your house will smell like lavender, some nights like sticky toffee pudding others like horse shit.

Marlins Rally Late To Beat Twins.
Twins 2 Marlins 5 W-Floro (1-0) L-Jax (0-1) SV-Puk (2)
The Twins were finally handed their first loss of the season behind a Sandy Alcantara shutout. The team looked for the series win in the finale in Miami today. The Marlins got the scoring starting in the first inning. Jorge Soler crushed a Pablo Lopez fastball out to left for a solo blast. Meanwhile, Pablo Lopez and Jesus Luzardo duked it out in a pitcher’s duel. The Twins finally figured out Luzardo in the seventh with a Ryan Jeffers one-out double to right. Trevor Larnach delivered a big two-out single to left, which plated Jeffers and tied the game at one. The Marlins offense woke up in the eighth with a Jean Segura infield single and a Jon Berti single to right. With two outs, Bryan De La Cruz delivered a run-scoring single to center to put Miami on top. Jorge Soler followed and crushed a Caleb Thielbar slider out to deep left field for a three-run home run. This put the Marlins up 5-1 after eight innings of play. The Twins would have one rally left in them in the ninth as Kyle Farmer lined a one-out single to right and Ryan Jeffers walked. A wild pitch from AJ Puk plated a run and the Twins were within three. Trevor Larnach was called out on strikes on a questionable pitch to end the game. The Marlins took two of three games from the Twins this week in Miami.
-Final Thoughts- Pablo Lopez looked good against his former team. He threw seven innings and allowed a run on three hits with eight strikeouts and a walk. Griffin Jax gave up two runs of 1/3 of an inning and Caleb Thielbar gave up two more in 2/3 of an inning. The Twins scattered six hits today and hit 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position. They left six men on base. The Twins couldn’t hit in the final two games of this series and it costed them. They have pitched well enough to win all six games. The Twins will return home and have an off day tomorrow. Jose Urquidy faces Sonny Gray in the home opener on Friday afternoon from Target Field.
