Nord Jarl for Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings
My girlfriend wanted to get into this game, so I grabbed the Nords and she grabbed the Spires. I'm still building most of the kits, but I wanted to get this guy painted up

Also, a group photo of the whole party. I think they ended up pretty neat.

Just how many hit points does God have, anyway? This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we chat with Michael Monaco about his new book excavating the history of Fantasy Wargaming called The Highest Level of All. The game is a very idiosyncratic RPG created in the late ‘70s in the UK. I’ve talked about this game before, both in a previous episode of the podcast and in a post a million years ago — this is one of the RPGs from the early days that’s interested in “realistic” simulation. It has a reputation for being unplayable (which Mike dispels) and for having silly things like stat blocks for the Virgin Mary. But it is also a deeply intriguing game, partly because it was one of the first to hit shelves in mainstream bookstores, partly because it’s primary creator Bruce Galloway died not long after its publication. We try to get to the bottom of Fantasy Wargaming’s unusual, but enduring appeal!

tbh I don't think I've seen a fantasy miniature range (for wargaming) that's more than a step or so away from sorta classic fantasy, elves, dwarves, vaguely, medieval to renaissance humans, some sort of green-skinned something or other (ork/c goblin, ogres, trolls), undead, you might get a couple of more original factions and each of the classic factions might have a bit of original flavour
I mean other than like Pirates with fantasy elements, or wild west with fantasy elements, or ww1/2 with fantasy elements, or fantasy east asia with fantasy elements
there's very little to nothing out there that's just weird interesting original fantasy, like in wargaming Fantasy generally means will have elves, dwarves, orks, and dragons
and I think it's because it's all semi-compatible, there's a whole host of mini agnostic wargames, plus people will use them for grid combat dnd, doesn't matter where you get your fantasy miniatures, you can use them in anything classic fantasy more or less, they'll sell, probably, at least for a bit
something more original, eh that's maybe only good for your wargame
(edit: there might be some stuff out there, but does any of it last long or get popular)

Painted up an old Garden of Morr/Sigmarite Mausoleum set that I managed to pick up for cheap second hand!!! This is an awesome terrain set - everything you could possibly imagine being modular is modular - every fence can be removed, every building can come off its base, every base can be played on its own as a separate piece because they have coffins/detailing underneath the mausoleums... it is such a shame these kits aren't produced anymore, I'd buy like 3 more of them for a giant graveyard board.

we're making an indie tcg boys
and we're looking for playtesters
<wip title> Project Card Souls is a TCG with an emphasis on tactics, positioning, resource management, and BLOOD. Summon forth an army of horrendous dark fantasy creatures, mind-destroying outer gods, or rag-tag peasants simply doing what they can to survive. destroy your enemies with a thousand wild boar attacks.
once it's done i will release it for free probably on itch.io since i don't really have the infrastructure to, like, make booster packs.

While I much prefer to make brighter minis, I’ve always wanted a go at trying todo a Turnip28 mini. While it’s still brighter than most lol, I’m really happy with it’s style and basing.
Turnip28 is a grimdark setting where root-vegetable people fight each other in muddy lands, he’s a carrot man!

I hit a big milestone this week.
For the first time in almost ten months, I picked up a paintbrush and painted some miniatures.
I’ve had no time or motivation to do any Hobbying for most of this year for a number of reasons but I’m now at a point where I can carve out a few minutes here and there to get painting.
A big part of this was clearing out the hobby room which had been used as a storage room and was piled high with boxes and other stuff, so it was not the kind of place I wanted to be in.
I got the room cleared and reorganised my painting setup so it’s all fresh and ready to go.
I’m hoping to get more time to paint going forward, as I’ve really missed it. Building and painting scale miniatures has always been a primary source of calm for me, helping to take my mind off things and de-stress. So it’s kinda ironic that stress and all of the things that come with it, has been the reason I’ve not been able to paint, and it created a sort of spiral which I was finding it very difficult to escape from.
Hopefully 2025 will be a smoother ride.
Glad to be back and hopefully I’ll have some stuff to share soon!
Happy Hobbying
Dave
