Though I’m only a handful of hours into Metaphor Refantazio, I’m compelled to express how wild it is that the game thus far has been keenly keyed in on the pulse of the current political climate (primarily from my perspective as a US citizen)
Vague Spoilers for the game’s premise & foundational worldbuilding elements established early in the first ~5-7 hours…
In Metaphor, the primary antagonist is a haughty elitist with zero regard for others who commits a multitude of reprehensible & violent crimes to gain a kingship & thus access to immense (unchecked) power. He’s protected by a private militarized force which, inbetween bouts of infighting & fracturing, expressly uses force to oppress citizens & aid in the explicit slaughter of citizens to sow fear and desperation in the populace & cut down dissenters. And yet despite all of that vile behavior & a literal admission of aiming to gain power by killing the former king, the antagonist still appeals to a majority of the populace leveraging their fears & zealous worship to become the frontrunner for earning the crown via mystical election.
Those who support him either: believe there is no better alternative, buy into the antagonist’s philosophy that “might makes right” and/or outright salivate over his blatant lack of morals or compassion as well as his rhetoric of wielding iron-fisted violence to crush any who might even have a chance of opposing his ideals or actions.
All of this occurs within a societal climate thick with hate, bigotry & discrimination (a lot of which is explicitly born from & reinforced by the narrow-minded tenets of the country’s major religion), where those who are considered “lesser” due to race are victims of poverty, exploitation, social stigmatization, limited or non-existent access to medical care, verbal & physical abuse by those from races who consider themselves to be fundamentally (& even divinely) “superior”, and farcical justice where one’s race could increase the likelihood of not only being unjustly arrested but also outright executed (privately & publicly) with zero avenues for proving their innocence beforehand.
On reflection, I’m certain that 8-10 years ago, many would have considered these aspects of Metaphor’s story & setting to be: “unsubtle”, “exaggerated”, “heavy-handed” or “over the top” etc. with little relationship to the realities of our contemporary society. Yet now the major differing factors seem to only be that, unlike real life, the world of Metaphor simply happens to have magic & monsters.

The thing with games like Baldur's Gate and Skyrim and all these other fantasy games with your various fantasy races who for some reason are all racist against one another is that, like, have you ever noticed that none of them are ever just casually racist? Like, there aren't any "Oh, well I just think we need more support for our fine police officers" or "I just think people should come here through the right channels" types in fantasy games. The least racist fantasy video game world person has the same beliefs as real-world Nazi.

There may be a time when I walked into the forest and came back. When the trees whispered to me that it was not my time nor was it my place. The moss did not accept me. The ground itself forbade me from laying in its cold comfort.
But there I was. Moss, bone, and something else.

I am realizing that Baldur's Gate 3 is way better then any other game that falls within the same concept. Dragon Age was close but even that game had the issue of replayability where I would very quickly get sick of the entire first part of the game that I would not want to go through it to get to any of the actually interesting stuff. Like even now years later I can't replay it because I immediately get bored of the static first act quests.
I am not having that problem with BG3 because the differences between play options and choices happen right away. So there simply isn't that long drawn out wait of sameness at the beginning.
Like...getting bored? Just do act 1 quests in a different order...it'll matter and you have that option, so you can.
Hell how often you long rest will impact the first act pretty significantly.
I have almost 500 hours in the game and I am still not even slightly bored of any of it.

So watching The Legend of Vox Machina has me wanting to play a fantasy RPG game. Unfortunately, your boy is on the struggle bus, so I have yet to buy myself a PS5, meaning I don't have access to the three fantasy games I know would scratch that itch, Baldurs Gate 3, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and Dragon's Dogma 2. Boo for me. But! My ps4 is still up and running, thankfully, so I'm thinking of replaying one of the fantasy RPGs I already own! And I'm stuck between either replaying The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt or Dragon Age: Inquisition. So, nerds of Tumblr, which one should I replay? Or, secret third option, I buy a game with my next paycheck that would be a better choice! What say you?

What Do I Know About Reviews? Glory to the High One (Shadow of the Weird Wizard)
As this year draws to a close, about to be murdered by Baby New Year so 2025 can replace 2024 like a sinister changeling subverting our connection to this year, I'm looking at Glory to the High One, a supplement for Shadow of the Weird Wizard. #TTRPGs
Unless a fantasy setting is doing a very specific thing, I prefer the setting to be clever with its real-world analogies. What I mean by that is, if you’re going to have a fantasy nation that looks like 1300 CE France, I don’t want it to be the same size as 1300s France. I don’t want all of the cities of 1300s France with different names, and I don’t like the nation to be the same age as 1300s…

I do enjoy that EUREKA: Investigative Urban Fantasy has a skill on its character sheet that's literally named ██████████, whose description basically just says "you're not allowed to know what this skill is called or what it does, but putting points in it will benefit the kind of person who would put points into a skill whose name they're not allowed to know", and it's actually telling the truth.

Terrible love triangles, barely established characters following far better established ones, grueling gameplay that's 10% RNG so you don't stun locked to death, and an NPC that carries you to the final boss.... why was this regarded so well again? #lotr #gamecube #rpg #retro
