For the purposes of this poll, "while living in my home" can also mean "until they're an adult." The implied difference between that and "I'd have them wait" is that the latter means you'd allow it at, say, age 13, 16, etc/after they're old enough to think critically about things.

The Kitchen with Two Doors
Kristina Kasparian celebrates a beloved childhood comfort food and considers the meaning of home and family in her new essay, ā€œThe Kitchen with Two Doors.ā€ This is one to savor!Ā
Dishes of the diaspora are strange in how they take on an identity of their own. In the school yard, I learned from my peers that their mothers and grandmothers made mulukhiyah differently than we did just a few neighborhoods away, using beef stock or rabbit stock instead of chicken, and adding tomato to the palette to interrupt the green. These variations on truth made me feel even more anchored to my family, though shaky about the veracity of our culture. Were we the ones doing it wrong? It hadnā€™t yet occurred to me at that age that the pride I felt for my familyā€™s customs could be muddied by the shame of being inauthentic.
The same disquietude stirred in my chest when my sister once pointed out that we eat Egyptian mulukhiyah far more often than any traditional Armenian foods. Our family traditions had become impregnated with where we had been, not where we were from. Home is not homeland.

ā€œThat may be your parent, but that is my spouseā€

The soft golden hues of the setting sun filtered through the grand windows of the Luofu, casting a gentle glow over the spacious room. Jing Yuan, as usual, had positioned himself at the balcony, gazing out over the vastness of the Xianzhou, but his eyes werenā€™t as focused as they usually were. His attention had subtly shifted, and there was a trace of amusement in his gaze as he watched you and your child in the middle of a lighthearted confrontation.
"Don't you dare try to sneak out again, little one." you said firmly, your voice calm but with an undeniable authority that only a parent could master. You stood with your arms crossed, watching as your child huffed in defiance.
"But I wanted to go to the garden!" the child protested, their small face scrunching up in frustration. "It's boring here!"
"You can go to the garden after finishing your lessons. Now, come on, letā€™s be reasonable."
Jing Yuan smiled faintly, his sharp eyes flicking to the scene in front of him as he leaned against the railing. From his vantage point, he could see the way your patience was slowly running thin. But it was clear you weren't losing your cool. You never did.
However, his smile faded as he saw the little oneā€™s growing agitation. Their defiance was turning into something moreā€”something less playful. With a sudden outburst, the child scowled, pointing a finger at you in irritation.
"I hate you! Youā€™re so mean!" they shouted, their tiny fist shaking.
Before you could respond, your child made an impulsive move. In a burst of anger, they swung their arm toward you, trying to smack your arm in protest. It was a childish actionā€”undoubtedly a sign of frustrationā€”but the intent, even from such a young one, still struck a nerve. You blinked, surprised at the sudden aggression, but before you could react, a low voice interrupted the tense moment.
"That may be your parent, but that is my spouse. And you will not be disrespecting them like that."
Jing Yuanā€™s voice rang out, clear and firm, cutting through the tense air. His tone was not one of anger but of authorityā€”an unwavering reminder of the respect that was due to you, no matter how young or headstrong the child might be.
The child froze, the smack they had intended to deliver now hanging awkwardly in the air. Jing Yuan stepped forward with the effortless grace that came from centuries of experience. His tall figure loomed with quiet command, his gaze soft yet piercing as he knelt down to meet their eyes.
"You know better than that, donā€™t you?" he asked, his tone still gentle, though the weight of it carried deep, fatherly disappointment. "Respect is something that should come naturally, not just when itā€™s convenient. Now apologize."
The child, clearly overwhelmed by the sudden shift in the atmosphere, lowered their head, guilt washing over their face. "Sorry, Mom/Dadā€¦ I didnā€™t mean itā€¦" they mumbled, eyes downcast.
Jing Yuan nodded, his expression softening. He reached out, placing a hand gently on your shoulder in a rare display of affection, the gesture tender as if to reassure you. You met his gaze, the quiet understanding between you both palpable in the moment.
"Donā€™t worry," Jing Yuan murmured, his voice barely above a whisper, "Iā€™ll handle this. You donā€™t need to bear the brunt of their frustration."
You gave a soft smile, nodding in appreciation. "Thank you, Jing Yuan," you replied, your heart swelling with affection for both him and the little one. "But you know, theyā€™re just learning."
Jing Yuan chuckled softly, a warm sound that lingered in the room. "Yes, they are. But that doesn't mean we let them forget their manners."
With a final look at your child, who was now quietly contemplating their actions, Jing Yuan stood up straight and turned his attention back to you, the occasional glimmer of weariness in his golden eyes. Despite the aura of wisdom and authority he wore like a second skin, you could still see the parent beneath it allā€”a person who was willing to move mountains to protect their family.
And with that, everything felt in its proper place.

Definitely check out Cuba's updated family code. It was a massive, successful effort from a political/legislative perspective at least. There's still gaps in practice, as patriarchy dies hard, but it definitely sets the bar.
can you explain family abolition in a few words?
sure. there is no one unitary 'family abolitionist' perspective so be aware that i'm explaining this as a marxist and not as an anarchist or a radical feminist.
basically, "the family" is a social construct rather than a fixed self-evident truth. the family has been created and can be shaped, altered, or--indeed--abolished. this is evinced by the broad anthropological and historical record of radical transformations in what constitutes 'the family' (cf. clans, the extended family, the nuclear family). viewing the family as such opens it up to critique and also to the concept that it could be replaced with something better (in much the same way that, for communist and anarchist, refusing to accept the timelessness / naturalization of the bourgeois state opens up new horizons of political thought outside of engagement with electoral politics.)
among these critiques of the family are:
that it is a tool of patriarchal control over women and children by creating an economic dependence upon spouses / parents
ergo, that it enables and causes 'abuse' -- that child abuse, spousal abuse, and intimate partner violence are not abberations of 'the family' but in fact a natural consequence of its base premises re: power and control
that it serves as a site of invisiblised economic labour (e.g. housework)
that it is a tool of the capitalist (formerly the feudal) economy's reproduction of inequality via e.g. inheritance laws
that it serves as a site of normalization and reproduction of hegemonic ideology--i.e. that it is the site where heteronormativity, cisnormativity, gender roles, class positionality, & more are ingrained in children
among solutions family abolitionists propose to remedy it are:
the total dissolution of any legal privilege conferred by romantic or blood relationship in favour of total freedom for any group of people to form a household and cohabitate
the recognition of housework, the work of childrearing, & the general tasks of social reproduction as 'real' labour to be distributed fairly and not according to formal or informal (feminized) hierarchies
the economic and legal freedom of children--(i.e., allowing children unconditional access to food and shelter outside 'the family', allowing children the legal right to informed consent and self-determination)
similarly, the emancipation of women from economic dependence on their partners--both of these can only really be achieved via socialism (as marx put it, 'women in the workplace' only trade patriarchal dependence upon a husband for patriarchal dependence upon an employer)
communal caretaking of children, the sick, & the elderly
yeah. i know. this is a lot of words. its not few words. sorry. it's a complex topic innit. this is a few words For Me consideri ng that i've got a long-ass google doc open where i'm writing up a whole damn essay on this exact topic.
tldr: the family is not inevitable, it is constructed & can be replaced with something better. full economic freedom from dependence on interpersonal familial relationships for everybody now. check out cuba's 2022 family code for an idea of what this could look like as practical legislation.

We were displaced from Gaza to Rafah at the beginning of the war, and we survived the genocide that occurred, We somewhat found some peace there as it was a safe area, but unfortunately, after Rafah was attacked, we left under bombing, destruction, and gunfire.
My children and I saw death, and we were displaced again. To Nuseirat, as it is somewhat a safe area, but there is no safety after the attack on Nuseirat a month ago.
