Norm is absolutely one of my favourite characters in the Fallout universe. The fact he loves his family and wants what's best for them being what drives him to look for the truth of what has happened to them and why is fantastic. The ultimate difference between him and Chet, too, is a great show of his character. It began with him choosing to help his sister find their father and ends with him coming to the same realisation as she has – their father was not the man he said he was and much of their life has been a lie. Watching him decide to take the hunt for the truth into his own hands, even when it could be the end of him, is incredibly compelling.
What makes Norm so enjoyable to watch, too, is just how human he is. All of the characters in the show are that way, which is part of what makes it great (yes, even the ghouls as they were at one time human). The distress he feels at seeing what happened to Vault 32 being swept under the rug, and the anger he feels towards Betty and the others for doing it seemingly out of a desire for control and power more than anything else is tangible. The fact it drives him to take the risk of sneaking into Vault 31 shows his bold and couregous side, and also that it's driven by not only his own curiosities but his desire for the truth. It’s a great parallel trait he shares with Lucy and, as she comes to find out, their mother. The anger he feels towards his father and also the desperation he feels to survive are a great contrast of his truth seeking and his baser humanity.
All things considered, Norm's competing feelings of a desire for truth, a desire for safety, curiosity, and a love for his family are what make him a great character. The fact he shares those traits with Lucy but expresses them in different ways creates a strong parallel narrative for their characters, and also does a great job showing the two sides of courage. The fact neither he or Lucy are impervious or shy away from moments of weakness and subsiming emotion latch onto the naivety from their upbringing and also their humanity. With them both now having to reckon with the truth about their father, a reunion between them will I'm sure be great and also remind them that not all of their family members are bad. Reckoning with the truth about their mother and Lucy's love for her being what compelled her to end her suffering before breaking down at the gravity of it is another layer of complexity to their family dynamics that both of them will need time to sit with. The contrasting feelings of how they knew their father versus what they've come to learn about him serve well to separate them from others like Chet; where he, their cousin, chooses to remain wilfully ignorant, they chose to put aside their fears and look for a truth they knew was out there.
Chet is a coward because he chooses to ignore the truth he has seen with his own eyes.
Lucy is brave because she is willing to go to any and all lengths to find her father and is then willing to end the suffering her mother is under because of him; she is openly emotional and driven by that and the love she feels for her family and is horrified and shattered by her father being a different man than the one she had always known.
Norm is brave because he is willing to do anything for his sister and father and, when faced with the choice to stay in blissful ignorance, because he chooses to seek out the truth even when it could hurt him; he, too, doesn't shy away from the pain the truth about his father causes him and, like Lucy, has to learn to live with the competing memories of their father and the reality of who and what he is.
Hank is a coward because, while he goes to the extremes to attempt to preserve himself and his family, he refuses to accept the fact his actions have consequences for the way his children (and, previously, their mother) had seen him and instead tries to force things to go back to the way they were before his children could learn of his ability to be selfish.
And Rose was brave because she loved her children so much that she would and did do everything for them, even when she had to put her love for their father aside and risk herself so that she and her children could have a chance to live in truth rather than lies. Her children share that with her, even though they didn't know it, just as much as they share her love, empathy, and desire for the truth even when living in wilful ignorance could have been easier.
Tl;dr – the entire MacLean family being driven by love for each other but expressing it in different ways that ultimately drive them apart is not only great at showcasing the different sides of courage and cowardice but showing the way Lucy and Norm are so similar and are driven by their love for their family just as much as their desire for the truth and that neither Lucy or Norm shy away from their emotional and impulsive reactions to it presents them as not only fully human but two sides of the same coin; they are both couregous even though they take two different paths to the truth.

Songs and bands that I think belong in Fallout
Most of these are heavy metal or rock! So be prepared :)
*"Let's Hang Together" - by Twin Temple. (This band is described as Satanic doo wop and their tune and vibe matches Fallout perfectly. Older sounding music but with a darker vibe.)
*The album called "Hail the Apocalypse" - by the band Avatar. This album has a couple of apocalypse related songs. This album (And the band) really reminds me of the perk Wild Wasteland. The apocalypse is a dangerous and brooding place, but there's a certain level of wackiness and uneasiness to it all. Kind of like a Freak Show.
Smells Like a Freak Show is actually the name of a song on another Avatar album. It also makes me think of Fallout, mainly raiders. The album is called the Black Waltz. The song "Smells Like a Freakshow" Makes me think of The Pack in Nuka World lol
*Every single one of Bon Jovi's songs. Every single one, especially the album "Slippery When Wet."
*Iron Maiden. I really enjoy how they sing about history, war, folklore, stories, etc. All of their songs are incredible, but some of them really fit the Fallout vibes. The song "When The Wild Wind Blows" Is a very emotional and moving song about the end of the world. The world ends in that song by nukes, just like in fallout. Even if you don't like metal I still suggest reading the lyrics, Iron maiden has some incredible story telling.
*Megadeth! They have numerous songs about the apocalypse, how much war sucks, and how the government is terrible. Perfectly fitting for Fallout. Just prepare yourself for the lead singers voice lol
*Black Sabbath - One of the founding fathers of rock. A lot of their songs protest war and the government. Their song "War Pigs" is fitting for fallout's world, along with many others.
*The rest of the "Unholy Trinity" and founding fathers of heavy metal. Led Zepplin and Deep purple.
*Maybe other classic rock bands and singers, like Kansas, Aeorsmith, Heart, Rolling stones, Cheap Trick, and Motley Crue. But these bands are getting awfully close to the divorced dad rock category so always keep that in mind.
*Dangerous Toys (A lot of the rock bands/hairbands that took a more humorous turn really remind me of Fallout. A few Dangerous Toys songs remind me of the radio host "Redeye" from Nuka World's raider radio. Mainly the songs "Gimme' No Lip" and "Teas'n Pleas'n"
*I really want to say Slipknot and Nu metal as a whole. I know Slipknot, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Deftones and System of A Down don't fit Fallout as well as some of the other bands and songs. But the idea of hearing "Break Stuff" While out in the wastes is very entertaining to me.
*Metallica (Just their vibes and sound feel so right for the universe of fallout. Their songs are often about struggles and intense emotions like despair and grief.
*Maybe bands that are nuclear apocalypse and similar themed. Like Nuclear Assault, Municipal Waste, and many more.
*This is more of a headcanon: I love the idea of Pre-bombs Fallout having a large punk/hardcore scene, and lots and lots of Hippies. Just so many people out there doing drugs/chems, living life, protesting war and writing music.
These are just some of the bands that I think would fit into Fallout! If you think I left something out then comment the band/singer! If you have any thoughts/headcanons please share those as well!!

Cooper Howard and Lucy MacLean's rare and wonderful dynamic (and how it's ultimately alright if they don't become "endgame" or whatever)
First off... I'm saying this as a HUGE ghoulcy shipper btw. I don't wanna hear about some bullshit about how "you just don't like the ship" or something dumb like that (have you SEEN the state of my blog??). I ADORE this ship. These are also ultimately my own thoughts. Do not be affronted if this somehow doesn't apply to your hcs. At the end of the day, this is fiction, nothing more.
Something I have to note on about the wonderful dynamic between Cooper and Lucy. Even if ghoulcy stays platonic, I'm fine with it because this is the closest dynamic to Jack/Liz from 30 Rock that l've seen, and if anyone's seen that show, you KNOW what I'm talking about. Let me explain.
Jack/Liz were two v complex characters that had so much chemistry but the way their "relationship" worked was so unique in that they were never romantic but they're WAY more than just colleagues/ friends, etc. There was literally an article titled like "why you'll never see this kind of relationship in television again" and ghoulcy has the potential to be that again which is still GREAT! It even goes on to talk about how they're COMPLETE AND POLAR OPPOSITES but the dynamic still works and how they feed off of each other in the only way no other characters can. The "dynamic" is THEIRS and theirs only. Seem familiar?
From what we're getting not just in the Fallout show but from interviews with the actors and creatives involved, we're already getting that special dynamic. However, I must stress that many of the comments and those interviews (imo) are sometimes taken TOO literally. The existing text and subtext of the ship is already abundant and ripe so I feel like not EVERYTHING has to be referred to the ship and the ship only. I know it's mostly funsies but I legit wonder if some of this is taken too seriously to the point of misconstruing an actor's words and getting tunnel vision JUST for the sake of the ship and ship only, in turn cheapening what is already there. Kinda like what I've seen with people having to vilify Barb further with unnecessary inferences to scenes that give her more layers (like questioning her genuine love for Janey and Cooper. She can be loving AND a villain y'all. Both things don't have to be mutually exclusive) EVEN THOUGH SHE IS CLEARLY VILIFIED BY THE SHOW BY THE REVEAL SO WHY MAKE UP STUFF? To "punish" her more?? Apologies but this kinda reads as "I need to prop up my ship further so I MUST degrade the other ship" even though it's again... SUPER UNNECESSARY (I must stress I've seen this on ALL sides of shipping/character stanning. Both sides suck when you engage in this behaviour). Have fun and faith in the strength of your ships (ESPECIALLY if they're not "canon" adjacent)!
Anyway, as I was saying...
Going back to 30 Rock, there's literally a scene in the show where they get married due to shenanigans, they get in a big fight the whole episode and in the end sit down and have the most revealing discussion with a councilor about why they're so much more complex than typical relationship. And another scene where they sleep in the same bed together and addressed why they never hooked up with each other and why that's okay. By the way, I was also a HUGE shipper of these two... But I was fine with how they ended up with because the story of their special relationship that makes them uniquely THEM was clear and concise. This did not stop me from reading fics where they make kissy faces. It is possible to do both and I think some ppl tend to forget this.
I'm not saying this for the antis (don't like what you don't like, but if you harass shippers then you can suck eggs and leave. This applies to shippers to non shippers too btw. Be. Nice.), I'm saying all this because I want shippers to not "despair" if the ship that they've become so invested in doesn't come to fruition (and not go overboard into thinking that writers should listen to whatever audiences want all the time, we've been down this road SO many times, it's terrible. Do we REALLY need to talk about how The Rise of Skywalker turned out the way it did due to unnecessary pressure from the loudest antis/asshats in fandom? I think not). Maybe this is also more towards the younger audience members as a cautionary tale because we old ass millenials have seen and been through this but didn't have the immediacy of social media at our finger tips, so it was kinda easier to not be as reactionary. I don't like playing the "you youngins don't know what it was like" card, but at some points it is just a statement of reality. Some of you are/were LITERALLY too young to have experienced this.
Ultimately, what I'm saying is even if ghoulcy doesn't become "romantic", I'm fine with it as long as they stay within the "something more/beyond definition" dynamic which is ALWAYS refreshing to see. Give us more "what are we"! Give us more "it's complicated"! Give us more "we can't be summarized in neat little boxes"!
As long as they don't end up in the pit of "one dimensional interpretation of the Found Family trope which is somehow only just Familial and in this instance Father-Daughter". Please, I BEG. Nothing wrong for people to like this dynamic, but to immediately categorize this into that box is just... Tiresome. You can make the same arguments about "shipping two living beings together on screen all the time" too for sure... But again it leads to my point of if we're going the platonic route how about we NOT just shove it in the same boring dynamic of Father-Daughter that if you want, can find in multitudes of other forms of existing fictional media.
Tldr; have fun but always remember this is all fictional media in the end where we play with dolls in a sandbox. Just remember to BE. NORMAL. and not forget this and start shitting in it and flinging poo at each other. That goes with relationships with creators of said media too. Do NOT become parasocial and expect everything to be catered to you. The creators want to tell a story THEY came up with in the first place.
LET THEM.

Can we talk about my boy Norm for a sec? (a quick sec, i'm short on english vocab) Norm in ep 1 is your average shy, "coward", uninterested, and wary boy. Hell he says that himself.
Tumblr media
But for the rest of the season he can't seem to shake off the feeling that something is wrong with the management of the vault, and in spite of his fear or cowardice, he goes on and investigates, and dares just as much as lucy but in a different way, since they both get to the same conclution about the overseers, their father and such, only lucy does on the surface and norm underground
Tumblr media
So yeah I love Norm (more than his father at least) and I really really hope he doesn't die down there :P

food in the wasteland
this post is inspired by @newvegascowboy 's post on food in the wasteland (go check it out if you haven't read it, its wonderful), and it got me thinking, much of the world in fallout has one characteristic, in one way or another, there is always some group grasping onto the past, and i wondered how that could affect food
lots of folks hold recipes and family tradition close, and at the end of the world that's all some folks have, and with that thought i started wondering how culture would affect food and food would affect culture
a couple notes first, if yall will humour me
i wont be covering fallout 76 or prime (for now) as i have next to no knowledge of them
the Nuka world dlc will get its own post because of unique circumstance within the setting
this wont be all encompassing, it is a collection of thoughts and notes (which yall can use as a basis for any ideas)
yall are wonderful and enjoy

hardy food, mostly local with a lot of proteins and carbs, stuff that lasts, especially through the winter. diamond city and goodneighbour have more high end food, good cuts of beef, venison and even deathclaw are found in the markets, takashi toils over hardy broths and succulent mirelurk paired with glowing fungus, fresh breads and high end cooking, down south and along the coast, theres lots of fish and mirelurk on the menu, small house gardens, while to the north there are many orchards, and fields, small by prewar status but mind blowing to folks who come from dc way, central boston is home to more merging of the local diets, but much more pre-war food, folks scrounge for food more than grow it. the food is almost reminiscent of the colonial days, lots of dried or canned goods

food vibes very hearty but humble, lots of seafood, meat heavy meals are meant for special occasions, salted foods are common, lots of preserved foods, very dense foods, very filling, typical of a town where you have to worry about fish people and ancient sea gods, it is the food of people who think that an easy week is half a day off after a full 50 hour work week, imported foods like mutfruit jam is saved for the guests kinda food

food vibes desperate and despair, most soil is unfarmable due to all the bombs, people eat what they catch, brahmin are sickly and produce precious little food, its inventive in a sad way, even with cleaned up rivers the fish are still unfit to eat, and will be for a while, the soil will take lots of tlc and hydroponics can only do so much, its a wasteland
the mojave
go to meats/egg

tamales
grilled maize
fried fish (near lake mead)
cactus fries
nopales
jalapeno poppers
sopapillas
homemade bread
homemade rolls
food vibes western-new mexico, the strip has more high end food but most of the mojave has more rural staples, very flavourful, kinda ranch food, keeps you going all day and makes you glad to come home, really homecooked vibes, lots of variations, like never ask for a recipe in a crowded room cause it will start a fight over whose grandma had the better recipe, lots of meat and vegetables, very little fish, not a lot of "pickyness" over food
zion canyon traditional
meat
perch
rainbow trout
yao guai
gecko
mantis
bighorner

roasted pinyon nuts
food vibes not highly intricate but somehow nostalgic, very traditional indigenous, simple in an uncomplicated way not a bad way, some of the best quality ingredients around, clean food and clean water, smoky flavors, food isn't meant to be showy or fancy, its meant to leave you full and happy as you spend time with family, its meant to be honored and not wasted
new California republic
meat
brahmin
deathclaw
deathclaw egg
gecko
gecko egg
fish
various wild game
crops
potato
onion
cabbage
maize
green mutfruit
fava bean
apple
rice
tomato
carrot
foraged
seaweed
recipes
shi rice: cooked rice served with a side of seaweed or fish
brahmin, any cut of meat grilled or fried
cornbread
grits
tortillas
cabbage soup
chile
cabbage salad
mashed potatos
baked potato
sauerkraut-coleslaw
pickled veg
jerky
mashed potato
baked potato
stews
soups
food vibes very diverse, lots of regional staples, San Francisco has lots of seafood while towns like Modoc have mostly brahmin meat and veg, Klamath has gecko, its very locale dependent ¨(out of character, fallout 1-2 is super bleak and sparse) food is often a matter of survival more than fancy, with the exemption of larger settlements and cities where imports are available and you can afford to experiment with food

Ten thoughts about Fallout Season 2:
1. The Ghoul and Lucy's journey, and further development of their relationship. Looking forward to seeing how the Ghoul and Lucy's dynamic will play out.
2. Curious of Norm's fate. And learning more about the experiment connecting Vaults 31, 32 and 33.
3. Maximus dealing with becoming a true knight within the Brotherhood
4. Further backstory of the Ghoul and his experience straight after fleeing with Janey from the nuclear fallout
5. More variety in the Wasteland fauna - i.e. Deathclaws, super mutants, mirelurks, radscorpions, cazadors etc
6. The realisation of the New Vegas strip to screen. (Perhaps a mention of the Courier too?)
7. Introduction of Synths into the series
8. References to other factions such as the Institute and the Enclave
9. Following Hank and his narrative unfolding in New Vegas
10. More of the Ghoul

What are your thoughts on common hcs for ghoul dicks?
Thanks for the ask!
I’m gonna keep my ask box open for things like this now so feel free to ask me fallout related questions!
CW: fallout 18+ head-canon discussion
Very prominent ghoul fuckers in this community, no shame.
I’ve always thought about how the nose falls off right? The tissue of the external part of the nose organ falls off, the nasal muscles right, those help work as dilators and defibrillators.
So if a ghouls nose falls off, the nerves and the connective tissue on it? Gone. Why wouldn’t a penis?
A penis, the external part of it at least. Is also partially made up of nerves, muscles, fascia and connective tissue!!!
At most, a lot of it would be gone, leaving the Urethra, the dorsal arteries, nerves, and veins protected by just muscle, would cause the penis to look frail, possibly not get hard or raise, look like fallout 3/nv ghouls muscle tissue revealed, so it’s just thin muscle and cartilage keeping that shit up. (See: ghoul ears being only cartilage and muscle)
Common side effects from chemotherapy are erectile dysfunction, shortening or curving, dry/prolonged/no orgasm, retrograde ejaculation, and low libido.
Older, pre war ghouls probably have limp shriveled dicks.
Younger ghouls probably have a harder time dealing with it or keeping it up.
Plus side? Since the derma layer is gone those nerves don’t hurt!!!
Ghouls, canonically have penis’s according to random combat lines so we can take that (mildly)
This an absolute amalgamation of text I apologize but these are my thoughts on that!
Thank you medical terminology and anatomy classes!

I’ve been thinking of something crazy about the enclave and I want to hear what y’all think about it: SO, we know the enclave considers everyone who lives in the wasteland and/or has been in contact with radiation (muties, putting it in enclave terms) as beings who need to be eradicated. They’re literally trying to get rid of everyone, even themselves. Right?! Hear me out, they are practically in the SAME position as everyone else since they go out and about in the wasteland numerous times, and even if they found themselves in a safe and radiation less place they would still find themselves in contact with other members who have gone out exploring. So wouldn’t that make them part of what they’re trying to get rid of too?!
Anyways, I’d love to hear what everyone thinks of this! :)

So we haven't seen the fallout series yet but we are big fans of the games and love hearing lore. Gonna work on a verse and thinking maybe having the band tour round Nuka World or the raider encampments to cause hell and feed off the chaos.

Mutated NCR Cabbages & Kimchi
I remember reading on Reddit that the Fallout cookbook had notes mentioning the NCR has giant mutated cabbages and it makes me of the Korean-Americans in the NCR and in Deadwood just taking a large knife or machete to those cabbages and making kimchi out of it. I have no idea if red pepper plants are still common post-war in fallout. But white kimchi is always an option.

Thinking about Starfield and how Matt Mercer's involvement was as hush as FO4's Next-Gen update...🤔🤔🤔
I mean, it's not as if they would do a whole:
Bethany Esda: Hey Matt. So, um 👉👈 since you're here—
Matt: Roll for persuasion!
*They roll a nat 20 and hand Mr. M a page of dialogue*
Cut to scene:
MacCready: Hey, Mungo...get your frickin' coat! It's time to go get my damn kid!" SoSu: About time. It's only taken you 7 years, 9 months, and 29 fuggin days! *Danse appears in a Vertibird with Deeks, Hancock, and Nick V.* Danse: Time to clean up the Capital Wasteland, General. Deeks: Aww, he's all grown up. I still can't believe my first assignment with the RR ended up becoming a Paladin for the BOS...we need to talk about your life choices M7-97 Danse: 👁👄👁
Nick and Hancock: We're just here for the ride...
Could you imagine...Ugh, a girl can dream.🤣🤣🤣
But also:
Skyrim's Special edition included new CC...
We already have FO3 CC content that takes us to the Capital via Vertibird...
But have you seen all the FO3 mods for FO4... CC is mostly made by modders anyway...
FO76 gave us the Pitt...
Great chance for end-game content...we know the Brotherhood, the Railroad, and the Institute have connections to the Capital...
Death Shroud showed how much the VAs love their characters.

Re: Fallout Equines
This might be a bit out there, but do you think there's a similar place for Zebras in the Fallout world? Both in terms of serving those in South-East Africa but also we know from Nuka World's Gazelles and Ghoulrillas that the survival of captive zoo animals is absolutely in play. I imagine the big challenge there is that they aren't really domesticated, but I'm sure over 200 years it could work out?
I have actually thought about this a lot!!! Like a lot, lol
Thank you so so much for your ask!! I love questions like this!! :)
I love the thought of zebras as vicious mounts for the people of the wastelands, but sadly zebras do not have the build to carry weight. They simply are not built for riding, despite what some may say. Why is that? Well! Their bone structure is quite different from horses.
They are incredible equines but they cannot be ridden, nor are they the friendliest or easiest to train. We actually had one come through our rescue a while back and I don't think I've met a more mean and fierce equine. Strongest bite i've ever felt too!! (Luckily I didn't have to experience the kicks) And I've met some real fiery and pissed off equines. So I bet Zebra's would not work out the best for a form of mount or labor, but hybrids? I could see how they would work out well!!
Zorses, a mix between a horse and a zebra, still have some fierce and feral tendencies and can be difficult to train, but they do have the structural build to carry weight and haul. Zonkeys, a mix between a zebra and a donkey would maybe be alright for some forms of labor but their build would not be very good for much carrying. So Zorses would be the best option. Almost all mules are sadly sterile, since they are also a hybrid. So Zorses, I believe, are as well. So it would require a permeant breeder of a horse and a zebra somewhere out there in the wasteland. They'd be harder to find naturally running in herds like horses and zebras do.
I have actually thought about the use of zorses in Nuka World extensively. Like I have written multiple ideas and even a large portion of a fanfiction about these animals. I love to picture zebras and horses, along with donkeys, surviving in and around Nuka World. Just like the Gazelles, Ghoulrillas, and Brahmiluff(mutated buffalo)
I also love to picture the raiders of Nuka World using equines for multiple reasons, especially as mounts.
I have a work in progress fic about my OC overboss of Nuka World, Lilly. And her relationship with Porter Gage and their story of turning Nuka World into a raider empire. In this story they manage to keep all three gangs alive by spreading their territory to the river valley surrounding Nuka World. Taking over the old farmlands and town of Bradberton. In my little fallout world The Pack uses their animals for many many crucial things, like their dogs for hunting and their equines for many different things like mounts and haulers. and I like to think their main mount/riding horses are actually hybrids. Some form of mutated Zorse, maybe they even have mutated enough to breed on their own and have more abilities that Zorses would lack, like extra carrying strength and thicker fur for the appalcian winters. Zorses would already have an incredible advantage over horses, they would be incredibly powerful and vicious animals. They'd have the build of a horse but the viciousness of a zebra, with incredibly strong hooves and teeth that were made for murder. They'd be extra surefooted and muscular, with the ability to survive on little water and limited grass. They'd be harder to train, but in my Au the Pack has a few horse trainers, including an old world horse trainer who is a ghoul OC of mine. They train their zorses not just in bravery, but they are absolutely trained to bite and trample enemies. Their powerful bites, kicks and stomps are taken advantage of by the raiders of Nuka World. I also see The Pack painting the Zorses colorful patterns involving their equine striped patterning.

Deathclaws are babies. Very terrifying and murderous babies, but still babies.

Yk how in movies and tv you get taht one disaster like a bomb or a disease or smth and every screen everywhere gets this mass announcement? I have this rabid thought of like-
What if someone was playing fallout and suddenly they open their pip boy to chug a nuka cola and check their mini map when “ALERT ALERT NATURAL DISASTER RADIATION ATOM BOMB ZOMBIES EVERYONE GET UNDERGROUND NOW” and the player can’t tell if it’s real or just 210 years late 💀💀💀💀
