every time i hear cotton eye joe i hearken back to the halcyon days of high school PE. specifically that one trimester we spent doing acrobatic gymnastics. because PE wasn't class-specific i had two friends from 10th grade there who took pity on me and decided to add me to their group for the final test. you had to do a whole choreographed routine with a theme and all with some mandatory figures and everyone had to do both the acrobatic figures (with two feet off the ground) and the carrying ones. which is incredibly stupid in retrospect (like??? obviously most people can't fill both roles???) which obviously i couldn't do so they both did most of the figures and i was there "pretending" to be climbing on top of them (insane thing to say i know) which was a disqualifying move. but even then there was only so many figures i could take part in (i would carry them but couldn't do the reverse). so the way we solved that problem was to lean hard on the choreographed storytelling part of the assignment. specifically we picked a "cowboys and indians" theme and i played the cowboy and was "killed" like two minutes into the whole thing. i have really fond memories of lying there on the gymnasium floor for what felt like years pretending to be dead. wearing an old leather hat i stole from my dad (not a cowboy hat) and a flannel i also stole from my dad (not even remotely close to a cowboy look) while an electro/dubstep remix of cotton eye joe was playing SO loud it was practically shaking the walls. my two friends were (literal) indians (from actual india. the asian country) and it was their idea originally so the way i justified it when the teachers called us out for not respecting the rules was to say that it was a postmodern ironic take on the cowboy and indians motif with a double twist. i bullshitted with SUCH conviction and purposefully used as many complicated words as possible to confuse them that it did work and they begrudgingly let it slide because they didn't know how to argue back. it was the only time in all of high school i got a passing grade in PE except for the trimester we were assigned DANCE classes (of anything in the world. hell on earth) and the way i also managed to get a passing grade was to overanalyze the others' dance routines in the most pretentious pseudointellectual way because this was like half the grade (the second half was the performance itself). great times. the teacher was visibly shaking trying to repress the urge to murder me here and there. work smarter not harder lean on your strengths instead of compensating for your weaknesses and all that

The world is so hostile to tweens.....

Like we joke about how our schools growing up would ban the latest toy trends, but that reality genuinely horrific when you think about it. Like maybe 1% of the bans were based on safety, but the rest cited reasoning like

-"kids were bartering for collectibles" (kids learning about economics and product value)

-"kids were wearing them and the colors were too flashy" (kids experimenting with self expression and fashion)

-"kids were playing with them during lunch and recess instead of using our rusted safety hazard playground" (kids utilizing their free time to do what helps *them* unwind).

Play areas specifically geared towards children and especially towards teens are constantly being shut down. "Oh kids today are always on their phones!" Maybe because

-there are barely any arcades left and even less arcades that aren't adult-oriented,

-public pools and gyms are underfunded and shut down,

-"no loitering" laws prevent kids and teens from just hanging out,

-movie theatres only play the latest films and ticket prices are only rising,

-parks and playgrounds are either neglected or replaced with gear only directed at toddlers and unsuitable for anyone older

-genuine children's and young teen media is being phased out in favour of media directed only at very small children or older teens and adults.

-suburbs and even cities are becoming more and more hostile to pedestrians, it's just not safe for kids to walk to or ride their bikes to their friends' houses or other play destinations

Children's agency is hardly ever respected. Kids between the ages of 9-13 are either treated as babies or as full-grown adults, with no in-between. When they ask to be given more independence, they are either scoffed at or given more responsibilities than are reasonable for a child their age.

This is even evident in the fashion scene.

Clothing stores and brands like Justice and Gap are either closing or rebranding to either exclusively adult clothing or young children's clothes, with no middle ground for tweens. Tweens have to choose between clothes designed for adults that are too large and/or too mature for their age and bodies, or more clothes they feel are far too childish. For tween girls especially it's either a frilly pinafore dress with pigtails or a woman's size dress with cleavage. No wonder tween girls these days dress like they're older, it's because their other option is little girl clothes and they don't want to feel childish.

And then when tweens go to school, the books they want to read aren't available because they cover "mature" topics (read: oh no two people kissed and they weren't straight or oh no menstruation was mentioned or oh no a religion other than Christianity is depicted), so kids are left with books for way below their reading level. No wonder kids today are struggling with literacy, it's because they can't exercise and expand their reading skills with age-appropriate books. Readers need to be challenged with new words and concepts in order to grow in their skills, only letting tween read Dr. Seuss and nursery rhymes doesn't let them learn.

Discussions about substance use, reproduction, and sexuality aren't taught at an age-appropriate level in school or even by children's parents, so they either grow up ignorant and more vulnerable to abuse, or they seek out information elsewhere that is delivered in a less-than-age-appropriate manner. It shouldn't be a coin-toss between "I didn't know what sex was until I was 18 and in college" or "my first exposure to sex as a tween was through porn" or "I didn't know what sex was so I didn't know I was being sexually abused as a kid."

Tweenhood is already such a volatile and confusing time for kids, their bodies are changing and they're transitioning from elementary to middle to high school. It's hard enough for them in this stage, but it's made worse by how society devalues and fails them.

We talk about the disappearance of teenagehood, and maybe that's gonna happen in the future, but the erasure of tweenhood is happing in real time, and it's having and going to have major consequences for next generation's adults.

- Liu Qingge starts avoiding Shen Qingqiu's demon spawn child who actually makes him feel bad because his words are very true but also make his sister laugh at him

- Shen Yuan doesn't like being avoided by his crush Shishu so starts pranking the peak lord in more and more elaborate ways

- Liu Qingge becomes incredibly paranoid about Shen Yuan who he believes hates him for some reason and is convinced he's going to wake up in the middle of the night with this evil child in his house reciting all his failures as a person and potentially murdering him

- Shen Yuan also thinks he hates Liu Qingge

- this misunderstanding is a relief to both Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu who can clearly see it's actually a crush on Shen Yuan's end no matter how much he denies it

This is an odd post but as someone who has been depressed and suicidal off and on since the age of 13, I don’t love the way people talk about Robin Williams’s suicide without acknowledging the fact he had an extremely aggressive form of dementia at the time he ended his life.

He fought depression and addiction for much of his adult life.

His suicide wasn’t because of the baseline depression he had battled, his brain was quite literally being destroyed at the time of his death. He was helplessly losing bits of himself, his memory, his physical abilities, he was aware, he could feel it and it frightened him. His death should make you angry, not because ‘suicide bad’ but because we are not doing enough to support people with degenerative neurological conditions, it should make you angry that he was misdiagnosed with Parkinson’s and therefore never knew what was happening to his mind.

Instead people make corny asinine posts on the anniversary of his death that say things like “The people that smile the most are often the saddest, check on your funny friends. 🥺” and go back to ignoring mental health for the rest of the year. Completely failing to acknowledge that his suicide wasn’t because he was ‘sad’ it was because he was experiencing one of the worst things a human can experience.

Help! I'm a Perfect Genius, but This Potential Employer Asked Me a Boring Interview Question!

I was rejected from a role for not answering an interview question. I had all the skills they asked for, and the recruiter and hiring manager loved me. I had a final round of interviews — a peer on the hiring team, a peer from another team that I would work closely with, the director of both teams (so my would-be grandboss, which I thought was weird), and then finally a technical test with the hiring manager I had already spoken to. (I don’t know if it matters but I’m male and everyone I interviewed with was female.) The interviews went great, except the grandboss. I asked why she was interviewing me since it was a technical position and she was clearly some kind of middle manager. She told me she had a technical background (although she had been in management 10 years so it’s not like her experience was even relevant), but that she was interviewing for things like communication, ability to prioritize, and soft skills. I still thought it was weird to interview with my boss’s boss. She asked pretty standard (and boring) questions, which I aced. But then she asked me to tell her about the biggest mistake I’ve made in my career and how I handled it. I told her I’m a professional and I don’t make mistakes, and she argued with me! She said everyone makes mistakes, but what matters is how you handle them and prevent the same mistake from happening in the future. I told her maybe she made mistakes as a developer but since I actually went to school for it, I didn’t have that problem. She seemed fine with it and we moved on with the interview. A couple days later, the recruiter emailed me to say they had decided to go with someone else. I asked for feedback on why I wasn’t chosen and she said there were other candidates who were stronger. I wrote back and asked if the grandboss had been the reason I didn’t get the job, and she just told me again that the hiring panel made the decision to hire someone else. I looked the grandboss up on LinkedIn after the rejection and she was a developer at two industry leaders and then an executive at a third. She was also connected to a number of well-known C-level people in our city and industry. I’m thinking of mailing her on LinkedIn to explain why her question was wrong and asking if she’ll consider me for future positions at her company but my wife says it’s a bad idea. What do you think about me mailing her to try to explain?

But I beg you to consider doing more. A single, private message to one incompetent bitch may not convey to the necessary parties the depth and breadth of the situation. Many, many people have important lessons to learn from your experience, and I encourage you to share it widely. Consider making a public LinkedIn post, and ensure that it is shareable across platforms.
