January 20th's Film-a-day was the 2016 movie "Norm of The North."
Since it snowed the night before, and we were all off from school and work due to it being MLK Jr Day, what a perfect movie to watch together. It was a really cute movie about a polar bear named Norm who had the ability to speak to the human tourists, like his grandfather did as well. A company was trying to build condos in the Arctic and Norm tried to stop them. It was a heartwarming story with a happy ending. Apparently there are 3 more movies in the franchise that I will have to check out in the near future.
Originally I wanted to just go outside with my husband and take a picture of him in the snow, since his name happens to be Norm, there was snow on the ground, and we had fun that day. But he didn't want to be in any pictures which is okay. Consent is important after all. So I found some stuffed bears and put jackets on them and took their pictures instead.

January 17th's Film-a-day was the 2008 movie "Hellboy II: The Golden Army."
Since the first movie was pretty awesome I had to watch the sequel. This too did not disappoint.
Once again Hellboy and his team stopping the destruction of humanity. I went for a simple prop of the in-tact Crown of Bethmora using glitter foam and sealed with mod podge.

January 29th's Film-a-day was the 1974 rock musical "Phantom of The Paradise"
This rock musical has been on my to-watch list as well, ever since I've seen the trailer for it at the previews before Transylvania Nipple Productions' shadowcast performance of Rocky Horror.
This movie seemed more or less like a 70s version of Phantom of The Opera with some differences. I recognized Jessica Harper who played Phoenix in this. She also starred in Shock Treatment, the 1981 sequel to Rocky Horror, she played Janet Majors in that.
I felt bad for Winslow. He just wanted recognition for his music and Swan ruined his life. When Winslow began terrorizing the venue I hate that he signed a deal with that scumbag. I also felt bad for Beef. Yes he was a bit of an overdramatic diva, but he was just doing his job.
While I loved Rocky Horror and Hedwig instantly, it took me a bit to begin to love Shock Treatment. I don't think it will take me as long to love Phantom of The Paradise. I will be rewatching it a few more times so I can learn the songs.

January 27th's Film-a-day was the 2002 Studio Ghibli movie "The Cat Returns."
This story is about a teenage girl named Haru who saves a cat from getting hit by a truck. He stands up on hind legs and speaks to her, informing her that he is Prince Lune of the Cat Kingdom. Haru is then met with a barrage of unwanted gifts and attention from the Cat Kingdom, including a marriage proposal from the Cat King for her to marry Prince Lune. Her answer was taken as a yes though she didn't want that. She hears a female voice that tells her to seek out Muta and get taken to The Cat Bureau for help. Muta introduces Haru to Baron and Toto. Baron is a cat but from figurine that was given life by his artist; Toto is a stone raven who came to life like Baron. Before she can get help, Haru along with Muta, are whisked away to the Cat Kingdom, while Baron and Toto try to figure a way to rescue them.
This was a bizarre yet adorable movie. Then again, many Studio Ghibli movies are bizarre yet adorable (minus Grave of The Fireflies. That shit was just too fucking sad).
I wanted to draw Baron in his masquerade get-up, but as I was getting pressed for time and watching another drawing tutorial on YouTube wasn't in the cards, I went with a simpler drawing of Prince Lune shortly after Haru saved him instead.

I will post the last few pieces separately later this evening. I mention in the written description of my project how folks can come to my socials & read more about my thoughts, ideas etc. I will update that soon.
All of my Fun-A-Day Film-A-Day items shown here. I am happy I stuck with it this year. I've had an artistic itch for a while, & this was a great exercise in creativity & innovation, thinking up of things to make or do everyday.
Today I'll be lugging all it to Studio 34 Yoga Healing Arts for Fun-A-Day Philadelphia's Community Art Show.
The art show there this weekend is free to attend, and they will have a closing ceremony on March 30th.

January 26th's Film-a-day was the 1996 movie "Trees Lounge."
This was Steve Buscemi's directoral debut. He also wrote the script. This movie is about an alcoholic who was fired from his job as an auto mechanic and hangs out at the dive bar called Trees Lounge, of which he also lives in the apartment above. This movie was shot at a bar in NYC called Trees Lounge. Someday I'll go there and check it out.
This was a good movie. I love Steve Buscemi, he is a versatile actor and a good person. Before becoming an actor, he was a NYC firefighter and when 9/11 happened, he volunteered and did multiple 12-hour shifts to help people.
Eszter Balint is also in this film, she plays another barfly's estranged wife. Initially I thought of putting together a collage of photos of the 2 times I've seen Ms. Balint perform her music at a dive bar in Brooklyn, but I also wanted to just visit a local dive. I invited my husband to accompany me at the closest dive to our home, but since he has a work meeting at our local VFW coming up, he suggested we go there and get memberships. So that's what we did. And we learned the difference between VFWs and American Legions. Though neither of us were soldiers overseas, we can still be social members since we're township residents. I don't go to bars often but at least it's small and quiet and close by, so if I want to have a drink I can go there once our memberships are approved.

January 25th's Film-a-day was the 2018 documentary "Won't You Be My Neighbor?"
I bought this documentary when it first came out, before the Tom Hanks' movie when he played Fred Rogers. Mister Rogers was a true Christian and accepting of everyone. He gave kids the emotional support they needed.
This is me with my Bob Dog puppet and also Peter Cottontail puppet. Bob Dog was a character on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, but he was just a guy named Bob in a dog costume. My dad bought the puppet the day I was born and named him Bob Dog because his colors resembled those of the character on the show. As a kid and as a parent myself, I often used puppets to entertain my daughter, both my own growing up, as well as new ones we acquired.
I'm actually amazed that I still have both Bob and Peter. Their tags indicate they are from the same company (R. Dakin & Co). Bob was manufactured in 1976 (same year my husband was born) and Peter was manufactured in 1983.
I think I might've been like 5 or 6 when I got Peter Cottontail, but I literally had Bob Dog since my DOB. His red collar broke a long time ago but I took red ribbon and made him another one just a couple of years back. His mouth has been stitched up a little too. Also pictured are Moose and Penguin. I think my mother-in-law gave Moose to Angie when she was little, and I bought Penguin from Dollar Tree around Christmastime in 2006. I would put on little puppet shows for Angie when she was little and give them different voices.
I don't have a cardigan sweater but this leopard print jacket is more my style anyway. Perhaps someday when I get my YouTube channel up and running I'll film some puppet shenanigans.
I also threw in a pic of the actual Bob Dog character from the TV show. I learned there is a reddish dog named Bob Dog out nowadays, completely unrelated, but Mister Rogers' Bob Dog is the OG.

January 23rd's Film-a-day was the 1972 John Waters' movie "Pink Flamingos."
I have seen clips of this movie in my Instagram reels and have seen friends post about Divine, so I have been meaning to see what this was all about. This movie was so over-the-top with the acting and the nudity, especially for the early 70s. I loved it though because it is so chaotic and fun. I found myself laughing and saying "What the fuck?!" a lot 😂
This is my attempt at a closet cosplay of Divine. I used what I had at home already to throw this together. I know the make-up isn't on-point but I don't care. The point is to have fun so that's what I did.
I included pics of the homemade earrings and the red tutu being safety-pinned to the bottom of my red glitter dress. I also included photos of Divine from the movie for reference.

January 21st' s Film-a-day was the 1996 movie "The Craft."
Once again, many of those who have known me for a very long time are probably amazed that I've never seen this film before now as well.
As much as I appreciate alternative fashion and goth aesthetics, I do not believe in magic nor casting spells, nor gods nor devils for that matter. Toward the end of high school, because I often wore black on dress down days and crazy makeup and had black hair, other students mislabeled me as a "goth" and thought I was in the Trenchcoat Mafia. I graduated from high school in 1999, just about 6 weeks or so after the Columbine Massacre, so suddenly warnings about bullied kids and wearing dark aesthetics were "red flags." I wasn't bullied but other than a couple of friends (who are still friends to this day), I didn't talk to many people unless it was classwork related.
To be clear, goths aren't necessarily into witchcraft nor Satanism. Some might be, but it's not a requirement. In fact the fashion and aesthetics aren't required either. The only requirement to be a true goth is to listen to actual goth bands and goth be one's primary genre of music that they listen to. That's it.
Since the only true goth band I listened to back then was The Cure, I was never an actual goth. I was more of a metal head (still am) that also listened to classic rock and pop music as well (still do). I listen to way more traditionally goth bands now but it's still not my primary genre of music that I listen to.
It might sound gate-keepy, but I don't make the rules. Goth is a music-based subculture, and the fashion is secondary.
Despite not being a true goth though, I do love that alternative fashion that is associated with the goth subculture so I decided to get dressed up.
The spellbook Christmas ornament was a gift from a longtime friend and I cherish it. It made a nice prop for this photoshoot too ❤️
I also found my old ankh necklace I bought when I was 17 from Way Out at Roosevelt Mall.

January 18th's Film-a-day was the 2010 movie "Legend of The Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole."
I only vaguely remember trying to watch this with Angie many years ago. I'm not sure if we were successful but even after watching it this time none of it rang any bells, so I probably didn't watch it before.
This drawing of the main protagonist required me to watch another drawing tutorial. I don't think I did too bad.

January 16th's Film-a-day was the 2004 movie "Hellboy."
I am normally not one for comic book superhero action films, but I've always wanted to see this just because it has a devil-creature as its protagonist. Also, I think Ron Perlman is a pretty cool guy.
I began sketching the title character, but I wasn't thrilled with how it turned out. So instead I drew the emblem of the organization to which Hellboy belongs - Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.)

January 15th's Film-a-day was the 2006 movie "Aquamarine."
This movie was a bit campy, but I do believe it was geared toward teen girls. The characters were overall annoying. But the title character had very pretty fins. I picked this movie up from Goodwill for a $1.97, probably because of her fins. Otherwise I don't know why I bought it.

January 14th's Film-a-day was the 1990 movie "Edward Scissorhands."
If you've known me for a long time you might be asking, "Meg, of all people to have never seen Edward Scissorhands before, your Tim Burton-loving, goth-wannabe-back-in-the-day ass, really?!"
Yes, really.
I finally got around to it thanks to this Fun-A-Day project.
This was a sweet, yet sad movie. I hated how almost everyone in town turned on him, when he did nothing wrong, and those people were awful toward him. I was happy to see Kim cover for him toward the end, but sad that she never saw him again after that. It goes to show how quickly people go from loving someone to hating them, all over lies and misunderstanding.
Much like Edward, I'm not one for socializing much, especially the older I get. I actually like being a homebody and enjoy just being in the company of my husband and daughter, and I don't mind being alone either. Besides, I hardly trust anyone outside of them anymore.
Since I was on a prop-making kick, I decided to style an old black Halloween wig, and I even got a new wig head and did the make-up and scars to look like the character.
This one took me a bit, but I eventually got around to finishing it.
Meanwhile I've been watching movies and making art in the meantime. I wanted to post everything in chronological order.

January 13th's Film-a-day was the 2006 anime movie "Tekkonkinkreet."
I saw this DVD in Dollar Tree back in 2014/2015 and I remember asking Facebook friends if they ever heard of it. My Facebook anime-loving people said it was an awesome movie and a great find, but at the time Angie was too young for it and told me it wouldn't be good for her. Well I put it on back then, but only made it through the first minutes before I dozed off.
So I finally got back to it with this project and Angie watched it with me since she's an adult now.
And it really was a good film. I highly recommend it. A good story with lots of symbolism.
