January 13th's Film-a-day was the 2006 anime movie "Tekkonkinkreet."
I saw this DVD in Dollar Tree back in 2014/2015 and I remember asking Facebook friends if they ever heard of it. My Facebook anime-loving people said it was an awesome movie and a great find, but at the time Angie was too young for it and told me it wouldn't be good for her. Well I put it on back then, but only made it through the first minutes before I dozed off.
So I finally got back to it with this project and Angie watched it with me since she's an adult now.
And it really was a good film. I highly recommend it. A good story with lots of symbolism.

January 12th's Film-a-day was the 1988 Studio Ghibli movie "Grave of The Fireflies."
I read the warnings about this movie being sad, but I was still not prepared. Between this one and the day before's film, the death, the callousness of some characters, it sure was a a downer of a weekend, film-wise. After this one, for the rest of Fun-A-Day 2025, if I happen to draw a title from the container that seem sad, I am just picking again.
This movie in particular, I could not sleep right, especially knowing that the book it is based on is partially biographical, meaning that many of the things actually happened to the author, though he changed what happened to his character. He lived with that guilt until he died at age 85. I still cannot fathom how people can be so cold toward literal children, especially after losing their mother. Just thinking about it makes me tear up.
I tried to imitate the view of the fireflies from the old bomb shelter, I also mixed in gold metallic paint with glow-in-the-dark paint, but unfortunately it did not give the effect I really wanted.

January 10th's Film-a-day was the 2010 movie "Alice in Wonderland."
I've been wanting to see this movie for quite some time. I like seeing that Alice is older and has a mind of her own. Overall I liked this movie a lot. Eventually I will get around to watching its 2016 sequel.
Instead of making a doodle or a painting, I made another prop: a rendition of Mad Hatter's hat, using materials I already have at home. I used a new years top hat from the dollar store and made it taller with black crafting foam. I covered it in black shiny fabric and used gold glitter fabric paint, adding more gold glitter to it to give it a shine. I had the pink fabric left over from another costume I made a while back for the sash, I chose an orange feather to acknowledge the ginger hair color of Depp's Hatter, and used pens from the dollar store with gems as well as ribbon wrapped around a chenille stick with a glitter foam flower for the hat pins and white foam and a sharpie for the 10/6 tag. It's not an exact replica, but I like how it turned out. It is not comfortable to wear at all though.

January 9th's Film-a-day was the 2016 stop animation movie "Kubo And The Two Strings."
I vaguely remember my daughter getting a happy meal toy from this movie when it was still in theaters. I purchased the DVD when it was released but never got around to watching it until last week. I also wasn't aware back when it was released that it was stop motion and it is front hr same studio that created "Coraline" (2009).
Kubo carries his mother's magical shamisen, which he also uses to animate origami figures in the film. Two of the strings represent his parents. I looked up shamisen and it is a twla Japanese instrument. I made my own model of one, using an empty wrapping paper tube, an empty paper towel tube, an Amazon prime box, an extra 8"x10" canvas, some elastic cord my daughter has from bracelet making, acrylic paint, and hot glue. It doesn't make music, but I like how it turned out.

Today's Film-A-Day is the 2022 shitshow known as "Grimcutty."
From start to finish this was just crap. From the shitty acting to the shitty take on the Momo creepypasta. It was fun to make fun of though lol
Here's my take on Grimcutty

Yesterday's Film-a-day was the 1987 movie "Who's That Girl."
I was still feeling the 80's Madonna nostalgia. I vaguely remember watching this movie when it first came out on HBO, but I was 6 years old, and all I remembered was something about Madonna, Madonna's platinum blonde look, jail, and a tiger. I remembered wrong of course, it was actually a cougar but it was 38 years ago almost so there's that. So while I've technically seen this movie before, I didn't remember much of any of it, so it was like watching it for the first time last night. Madonna's voice in this film irritated me a littlle, but overall it was a cute movie. I decided to draw the cougar Murray, or at least attempt to. I had to watch a few drawing tutorials on YouTube since I can't draw worth a fuck, which is what I said about my fun-a-day for "After Hours" which also starred Griffin Dunne. It doesn't really look exactly like Murray but way better than I normally draw anything. The second pic is my first attempt. It took up too much of the page and was giving Scar vibes.

Monday's Film-A-Day was the 1985 movie "Desperately Seeking Susan."
This movie hit me with a huge wave of nostalgia. I absolutely loved it, both Madonna and Rosanna Arquette were amazing, and still are as far as I'm concerned. 🥰🤩
I was compelled to make another sparkly painting, this time of Madonna's iconic jacket in the movie. I painted layers and mixed colors and glitter, and well, it took me a bit. The jacket itself is darker than what I intended, but I also didn't want the color to be uneven.

So I'm a little behind with Fun-A-Day. I've been watching movies, but the pieces I'm making for yesterday's and today's movies have gotten a little more complicated than I anticipated. But I am hoping they'll turn out good.
Here's a sliver of the piece from yesterday's film.

Today's Film-A-Day is the 2011 Studio Ghibli film "From Up on Poppy Hill."
This story takes place in 1963 Japan, about a girl named Umi whose father died on a ship during the Korean War, for whom she still raises maritime flag Signals, hoping someday he'll return home safely. A classmate of hers, Shun, had been responding to her flags from his father's ship, unbeknownst to her, as she could not see all of the ships from her point on Poppy Hill. This was a sweet and heartwarming and at times sad story.

Today's Film-A-Day is the 1985 Scorsese film "After Hours."
It is labeled a black comedy, which tells the story of all of Paul's misfortunes in a single wild evening. Some spoilers and a trigger warning ahead:
A jilted cocktail waitress who is a talented artist makes a detailed wanted posted of him toward the end of the movie. Instead of an actual sketch I chose to draw his "final form." Also, I can't draw worth a fuck, in case you couldn't already tell 🤭
If you watch this please note there is one element that can be triggering featured- un-aliving one self.

Today's Film-A-Day is the 2023 movie "Dear David."
This was based on an alleged true story per a Buzzfeed cartoonist who claimed the ghost of a dead child was haunting him and trying to kill him. In 2017 there was a whole Twitter thread detailing what occurred. This movie was fun to make fun of because the whole thing was just silly.

Today's Film-A-Day is the 1990 documentary "Paris Is Burning."
It is about the drag scene in NYC in 1987 and the Balls that were held.
I made an abstract interpretation of Pepper LaBeija, one of the drag queen mothers that led House of LaBeija. I made this on a 12" x 12" canvas and used metallic gold acrylic paint as well as gold glitter to give it an extra glow

For Fun-A-Day this year, I am watching a different movie everyday that I've never seen before, and I will subsequently make a piece of art inspired by the movie of the day.
I'm calling my Fun-A-Day 2025 project "Nutmeg's Film-A-Day"
For as many times as I've been to Coney Island, I never saw the movie "The Warriors" before this evening.
Though they are trying to get back to Coney Island and the movie focuses more on their journey and survival, I was inspired to make a collage of some of my better photos from Coney Island, and I threw a couple of Warriors symbols on the center picture.
I can't wait until my next Coney Island trip this upcoming summer. I love it there.

I've been having a creative itch.
Before I get caught up in holiday preparations, I started prepping for my Fun-A-Day 2025 project: Nutmeg's Film-A-Day 2025.
As you an see we have a fuckton of DVDs & Blu-rays. Some we purchased new or used from thrift stores, & many I have yet to watch. I also have some films downloaded on a USB drive which is connected to our smart TV already. & some titles are on my Tubi or Pluto watchlists.
So I typed out & cut up slips of paper with movie titles I haven't seen or don't remember watching. I will pick a random movie out of the cd spindle thing, & watch a film every day in January. After each movie, I'll make a little doodle interpretation & maybe even give it a rating or a short review.
There's a couple of titles I'm going to sit aside & have a couple of movie nights at the house in January because that would be fun.
Here's to hoping I stick with it this year.
