The Politics Of Dave Portnoy

I don't like Dave Portnoy, and honestly I prefer to pretend he doesn't exist.

The only thing that makes this worth writing is that the levels of FAFO have absolutely peaked, as owner of Barstool Sports, Dave Portnoy took to social media to reveal that Donald Trump's latest tariffs were going to cost him 7 million dollars.

My thing is whatever happened to keeping politics out of sports?

The old trusted adage "go woke, go broke" is typically only used when your politics are too left leaning, but if you're on the other side of that spectrum, it's less likely to be said.

That's the political environment that allows a guy like Dave Portnoy to build a whole platform without ever breaking stride with the pro-MAGA, right leaning stances he espouses.

According to his wikipedia, this all started way back in 2015 when Portnoy wrote a blog about his support for Donald Trump and stated that he would vote for him purely because of how much everyone hates him and how he makes everyone "squirm".

Portnoy's Trumps love campaign didn't end there.

He interviewed Trump back in 2020 and the shift in Barstool's content is probably older than that. While Dave himself would begin making appearances on Republican platforms ranging from Fox News to the Rubin Report.

Despite his platform being very pro-Trump over the last 7 years or so, Dave Portnoy has not been spared by the recent tariffs and it appears that Barstool sports will be another of Trump's sacrificial lambs as he "restructures" the American economy.

This by the way, is less than a fortnight after taking to socials to complain about Signalgate, prompting the first instance in which he identifies Trump's economic policies as problematic

I have to insist that this is the most enjoyable, most karmic thing I have seen in at least about a week or so, and yes, "schadenfreude" is the most fitting term.

It's karmic to watch Dave Portnoy reap what he sows after pushing a political candidate based on how it made people "feel", which to me may be the silliest use of a grown adult's right to vote that I can imagine.

It's karmic to watch Dave suffer as a result of infusing politics with sports, and then have his politics be a direct contributor to why his sports platform faces serious jeopardy.

It's karmic schadenfreude to know that this idiot, insulted every Democratic candidate Trump ever when up against, and then had the guy he did voted for actively do things to make his life worse.

Portnoy is the worst example of sports integrating with politics, and it's really because he strives to be, and he goes out of his way to make it like that

He is a reflection of the culture right now where there is an acknowledgement among the right-wing globally, that are actively looking to make the world a worse place and they are purposely and knowingly identifying and siding with nazism, xenophobia, racism and generally anything that tries to "other" people. It's Elon Musk except his playing out the same scenario in sports media.

Time will tell how much Barstool will be affected by this, and I won't bother to keep up with it either.

Instead, I'll just enjoy the brief rays of sunshine and the subtle ways in which God reminds me that he exists.
