the worst parent poll made me realize just how many ppl in the fandom are willing to jump straight into abuse apologia. bc on one hand you have ppl dumbing down crow's abuse to "him just being mean" and on the other end you have ppl saying that curlfeather didnt abuse frostpaw because she sacrificed herself and frost + her siblings love her so she couldnt possibly be an abuser. truly mindboggling stuff take these serious topics away from the fandom asap.

Part of me feels like it's because many in this fandom have a feeling that if a character's actions are abusive, it means you're "not allowed" to like them. Like there's an impulse where if you liked a character, it MUST mean they weren't THAT bad, because you'd personally never like "an abuser."

As if it reflects poorly on your own morality, as a person, that you connected with An Abuser. Understood them, even. Even if it was just a character.

If it's immoral to Like Abusive Characters, of course your reaction is going to end up being abuse apologia. To enjoy something isn't logical, it's emotional, so you will get defensive about it when questioned. When you do, it's not going to be based on logic because you didn't reason yourself into that position in the first place. It's an attack on you as a person.

I feel like that's often the root of abuse apologia in this fandom, and sometimes the world at large; "If I admit that this character/person IS abusive, it means I was doing something bad by liking them, so I have to prove to everyone else that they weren't or it means I'm bad too."

And to that I say... That's a BAD impulse! Grow up and admit you resonated with a character that did a bad thing! If that's an uncomfortable thought, sit with it!

Sometimes abusers are likeable! They usually DO think they're justified in their actions, or doing it for "a good reason," or were just too preoccupied to care. MOST of the time, people who commit abusive actions are also hurt or traumatized in some way. You might even empathize with them. None of this means their actions have to be excused or downplayed.

"Abusers" aren't a type of goddamn yokai, they're people just like you and me. You don't help victims of abuse by putting the people who hurt us in an "untouchable" category.

In fact, all it does is make you less likely to recognize your own controlling behavior. You're capable of abuse. People you love are capable of it, too. People who love YOU can still hurt you.

In spite of how often people regurgitate "It's Ok To Like A Character As Long As You're Critical Of Their Actions," every day it is proven to me further and further that no one who says it actually understands what that means.

All that said; I think it's no contest which one's a worse parent, imo.

They both mistreated their children, but Curlfeather did it through manipulation without verbal or physical abuse. She politically groomed her into a position of power so that she could use her as a pawn. It can be argued if this counts as child abuse-- but it's firmly still under the broad category childhood maltreatment, which is damaging.

(though anon I'm with you 100% at seeing RED when "but she sacrificed herself" is used as an excuse. Curlfeather's death does NOT CHANGE what she did to Frostpaw in life. I think it's a valid point to bring up when comparing her to another terrible parent for judgement purposes, such as in the context of this poll, but I really hate the implication that redemption deaths "make up" for maltreatment.)

Crowfeather, meanwhile, is textually responsible for putting Breezepaw through verbal AND physical abuse, as well as child neglect. His motivations include embarrassment from a hurt ego, revenge on his ex, and being sad because of a dead girlfriend. This abuse drives Breezepelt towards radicalization in the Dark Forest.

You could argue Curlfeather is a worse person for Reedwhisker's murder, but as a parent? It's not even a question to me. Crowfeather's one of the worst dads in WC.

suzanne collins going back to first person for sotr is about to be my roman empire. the fact that she wrote thg from a first person perspective so we could get a very real and visceral experience of the world through katniss' eyes, then wrote tbosas from a third person perspective so we could judge snow's actions for ourselves whilst also getting to know lucy gray and understand her too. and now she's gone back to first person so that we can experience hatmitch's pain first-hand. i'm gonna be a wreck when it comes out. that excerpt alone has made my heart wrENCH.

i think we all don't put things down. It’s a funny part of the condition of being alive. To love is to live and to live is to look at things and linger as you never know when the last time you’ll see that person again, you may not remember those last words, and sometimes we get goodbye but we still have to grapple with it. we as writers also come back to similar stories, the same themes, an old friend, all artists do it. so rewrite that idea again and again, make as many beautiful pieces of art along the way, grapple and fight grief and transform it into something whole and good. don't stop writing those things, its okay to put the bad things down and okay to evolve past a point you thought you'd be ( congratulations on making it around the earth again. ). remember, play with it - find your voice, transform what you need, lose what you hate and revisit the rest. We all come back to the same theme of trying to be alive and love after all.

Lleu has been the incest baby all along! Morgause shaped Medraut's beliefs and made him loyal to her. It doesn't matter if he's of her blood or not because even if he is not her child biologically, he is her child idologically. A weapon of her own making. Artos' rejection drove him into Morgause's arms. If her plan came to fruition he would have slain her enemies for her and made her queen. It's brilliant, really. Medraut wouldn't even need to become a kinslayer, usurp and start a war. The throne would be rightfully his. All it would take is the revelation of Lleu's bastardy that would disqualify him as a successor.

The plan was never to make a child that could be her pawn as a king. The plan was to make a sacrifice. Morgause bore Lleu to give Artos a distraction while she was poisoning the mind of his real child. And in his shame Artos was playing right into her hands when he send away Medraut and neglected him. Medraut's hunger for parental love made him vulnerable to her manipulations and welcoming of her inappropiate advances.

Artos had no idea he was pampering his sister's bastard while he was treating his legitimate son like a stain on his family. If Medraut were to kill Lleu it wouldn't be regicide, it would be the execution of a pretender to the throne. He'd be treated like a hero instead of the villain he was. ooooh, this is so evil I like it. ^^

oh my god i just finished the dark forest finally. 7/10 i suppose, i went through the first half or so of the book being really annoyed by luo ji but also enjoying the chapters where he shows up because unfortunately he was entertaining. still don't understand the imaginary girlfriend thing, it just feels like he needs someone to protect from the world which like ??? ok sure i guess, it just rubs me the wrong way personally. for the second half and especially the end i became luo ji's number one defender it's fine. for the rest, holy crap—the droplet, the microcosm of the universe on those runaway ships, the wallfacer project, luo ji drawing from rey diaz's plan, the attitude of the world towards him, the entire theory... wow

He's doomed to walk the Earth eternally, lest he accept his actions as wrong and genuinely seek repentance for it, but how clearly do you think he remembers in Modern Nights? To my knowledge, I don't think it's ever explicitly implied or stated that he'd be exempt from the fact that memory is a fickle thing at the best of times, which is to say nothing for folks as long lived as the Cainites.

How much of what isn't muddied and blurred by emotion can he truly recall? Do you think he remembers the way Abel's face lit up when they'd joke around like brothers are want to do? The proud looks he must've gotten from Eve when he'd taken up gardening? The grief-stricken look Adam gave him before exiling him to the lands of Nod?

This is, of course, to say nothing of his time in Enoch and the squabbles his Grand-Childer got themselves into in the First City.

How can one truly, genuinely, repent if you can't even properly remember parse the events that have got you here in the first place after a certain amount of time has passed? A swirling miasma of emotions and trauma mudding the waters, diluting any chance at reconciliation.
