History of World Coconut Day
Coconuts are a food that humans have found sustenance in for at least 2,000 years. Probably native to Indonesia, the name coconut translates to “walnut from India”. While coconuts would have traveled throughout the Indian subcontinent and even to Africa in the early years, they didn’t make it to Europe until some time around the 16th century.
It is likely that coconuts were introduced to Europeans through the Maritime Silk Road, which connected the East with the West. Marco Polo may have been one of the many travelers and explorers who would have brought coconuts back with them.
When the Asia Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) was founded in 1969, it was created in an attempt to help support and promote the tropical countries that are high in growing, producing, selling and exporting coconuts. Located in Jakarta, Indonesia, this group stays connected with the production and export of coconuts. Sharing scientific expertise and coordinating activities within the industry, the members of the APCC are responsible for the growth of more than 90% of the coconuts produced and sold all over the globe.
Founded in 2009, World Coconut Day was started by the Asia and Pacific Coconut Community to promote the activities of coconut growers while raising awareness about the fruit for those outside of the growing community.

Enjoy Eating a Coconut
Some people who haven’t grown up around this delicious fruit might be intimidated by its brown, hairy shell. But once it is broken into and the creamy white flesh is exposed, it is a fragrant delight to behold.
First, start by poking a hole in the coconut at the end near the ‘eye’, where the shell is the thinnest. Use a screwdriver or hammer with a clean nail to make the hole. This will allow for the water of the coconut to be drained.
Pro Tip: Strain the coconut water through a cheesecloth and into a cup, and then drink it up!
Once the juice has been drained out of the coconut, one of the easiest ways to break open the fruit is by using a handsaw to cut it in half. Other people might want to simply put it into a sturdy bag and bang it against a stone or concrete until it breaks. This method is a bit messy, but it works.

Coconut Cream Pie. This classic pie contains coconut flakes or chips, coconut milk, heavy cream and eggs, and is topped with mounds of sweet whipped cream.
Coconut Ice Cream. This refreshing dessert is so simple, all it needs is 6 ingredients: whipping cream, sugar, vanilla, milk, salt and, of course, shredded coconut.

If you ever had pastries at breakfast, drank soy milk, used soaps at home, or built yourself a nice flat-pack piece of furniture, you may have contributed to deforestation and climate change.
Every item has a price—but the cost isn’t felt only in our pockets. Hidden in that price is a complex chain of production, encompassing economic, social, and environmental relations that sustain livelihoods and, unfortunately, contribute to habitat destruction, deforestation, and the warming of our planet.
Approximately 4 billion hectares of forest around the world act as a carbon sink which, over the past two decades, has annually absorbed a net 7.6 billion metric tons of CO2. That’s the equivalent of 1.5 times the annual emissions of the US.
Conversely, a cleared forest becomes a carbon source. Many factors lead to forest clearing, but the root cause is economic. Farmers cut down the forest to expand their farms, support cattle grazing, harvest timber, mine minerals, and build infrastructure such as roads. Until that economic pressure goes away, the clearing may continue.
In 2024, however, we are going to see a big boost to global efforts to fight deforestation. New EU legislation will make it illegal to sell or export a range of commodities if they have been produced on deforested land. Sellers will need to identify exactly where their product originates, down to the geolocation of the plot. Penalties are harsh, including bans and fines of up to 4 percent of the offender's annual EU-wide turnover. As such, industry pushback has been strong, claiming that the costs are too high or the requirements are too onerous. Like many global frameworks, this initiative is being led by the EU, with other countries sure to follow, as the so-called Brussels Effect pressures ever more jurisdictions to adopt its methods.
The impact of these measures will only be as strong as the enforcement and, in 2024, we will see new ways of doing that digitally. At Farmerline (which I cofounded), for instance, we have been working on supply chain traceability for over a decade. We incentivize rule-following by making it beneficial.
When we digitize farmers and allow them and other stakeholders to track their products from soil to shelf, they also gain access to a suite of other products: the latest, most sustainable farming practices in their own language, access to flexible financing to fund climate-smart products such as drought-resistant seeds, solar irrigation systems and organic fertilizers, and the ability to earn more through international commodity markets.
Digitization helps build resilience and lasting wealth for the smallholders and helps save the environment. Another example is the World Economic Forum’s OneMap—an open-source privacy-preserving digital tool which helps governments use geospatial and farmer data to improve planning and decision making in agriculture and land. In India, the Data Empowerment Protection Architecture also provides a secure consent-based data-sharing framework to accelerate global financial inclusion.
In 2024 we will also see more food companies and food certification bodies leverage digital payment tools, like mobile money, to ensure farmers’ pay is not only direct and transparent, but also better if they comply with deforestation regulations.
The fight against deforestation will also be made easier by developments in hardware technology. New, lightweight drones from startups such as AirSeed can plant seeds, while further up, mini-satellites, such as those from Planet Labs, are taking millions of images per week, allowing governments and NGOs to track areas being deforested in near-real time. In Rwanda, researchers are using AI and the aerial footage captured by Planet Labs to calculate, monitor, and estimate the carbon stock of the entire country.
With these advances in software and hard-tech, in 2024, the global fight against deforestation will finally start to grow new shoots.

Addressing the State Level Cooperative Conference in Bhopal as the Chief Guest, Shah emphasized that the cooperative movement had long stagnated due to outdated laws and lack of central initiative. However, the creation of the Ministry of Cooperation by PM Modi in 2021 marked a historic turning point. “Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the cooperative sector is now moving rapidly toward prosperity. The opposition left the sector in ruins, but this is a golden opportunity to revive and rebuild it in Madhya Pradesh,” Shah asserted. He announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the Madhya Pradesh Cooperative Dairy Federation (MPCDF), which aims to increase the participation of cooperative dairy societies in milk production and expand their footprint to every village. Currently, only 2.5% of Madhya Pradesh’s surplus milk reaches cooperative dairies, and just 17% of villages have a milk collection system. The MoU envisions coverage of 83% of villages, enhancing processing capacity and ensuring higher returns for farmers. “Cooperatives are no longer limited to short-term credit. Today, PACS are offering over 20 services—ranging from Jan Aushadhi Kendras to gas distribution and common service centers,” he said. “Computerization of PACS across India has brought transparency and accessibility.” He further highlighted that Madhya Pradesh leads the country in PACS computerization, with services now available in 13 languages. India becomes top importer of Brazilian bovine genetics
Asian country originated zebu breed popular in Brazil, but now jumped to top buyer of cattle semen and embryos from only sixteenth in 2023

The zebu breed foundational to Brazil’s cattle industry is finding its way back to India through rising exports of Brazilian genetic material. Last year, Alta Genetics Brasil exported 40,000 doses of semen aimed at enhancing the milk productivity of cattle in India, the world’s leading dairy producer. This year, Geneal Genética e Biologia Animal is set to make its first embryo exports to India.
“Indians acknowledged the remarkable genetic improvements achieved with zebu in Brazil and now want to enhance their dairy herd’s productivity,” stated Raquel Dal Secco Borges, head of international relations at the Brazilian Association of Zebu Breeders (ABCZ).
Raquel Borges is part of Brazilian Cattle, an initiative by ApexBrasil (the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency) in partnership with ABCZ. The project aims to secure new markets and strengthen existing ones for increased exports of Brazilian livestock products. The project encompasses 113 associated companies, including Alta, which holds a third of Brazil’s cattle genetic material market, and Geneal.
Brazil’s exports of bovine semen and embryos yielded $6.11 million last year, from $4.7 million the previous year, according to Agriculture Ministry data system Agrostat. Embryo sales saw the highest revenue growth percentage, rising to $1.41 million last year from $818,900, up 73.3%. In weight, genetic material exports totaled 1,450 kilograms, up from 942 kilograms in 2023.
