How to Get Started with Worldbuilding for Fantasy Writers
Hey fellow writers!
Worldbuilding can feel like a Herculean task, but it’s one of the most rewarding parts of creating a fantasy novel. If you're getting stuck, Here are some tips that have helped me, and I hope they’ll help you too!
Start with the Basics
Geography
- Map out the physical layout of your world. Think about continents, countries, cities, and natural features like mountains, rivers, and forests.
Climate and Ecosystems
- What are the climate zones and ecosystems like? How do they shape the lives of your inhabitants?
Create a History
Origins
- Dive into how your world came into existence. Are there creation myths or ancient civilizations that set the stage?
Major Events
- Outline key historical events. Wars, alliances, discoveries, and disasters can add so much depth.
Develop Cultures and Societies
Cultures
- Craft diverse cultures with unique customs, traditions, and values. What do they wear? What do they eat? How do they express themselves through art?
Social Structure
- Define the social hierarchy. Who holds power? What are the roles of different classes or groups?
Establish Magic and Technology
Magic System
- Set the rules and limitations of magic. Who can use it? How does it work? What are its costs and consequences?
Technology
- Decide on the level of technological advancement. Is your world medieval with swords and castles, or does it have steampunk elements?
Design Political and Economic Systems
Governments
- Create various forms of government. Are there kingdoms, republics, or empires? How do they interact?
Economy
- Define the economic systems. What are the main industries and trade routes? How do people earn a living?
Build Religions and Beliefs
Religions
- Develop religions and belief systems. Who are the gods or deities? What are the rituals and holy sites?
Myths and Legends
- Craft myths and legends that influence the culture and behavior of your characters.
Craft Unique Flora and Fauna
Creatures
- Invent unique creatures that inhabit your world. Consider their habitats, behaviors, and interactions with humans.
Plants
- Design plants with special properties. Are there magical herbs or dangerous plants?
Incorporate Conflict and Tension
Internal Conflicts
- Think about internal conflicts within societies, such as class struggles, political intrigue, or religious disputes.
External Conflicts
- Consider external threats like invading armies, natural disasters, or magical catastrophes.
Use Maps and Visual Aids
Maps
- Create maps to visualize your world. This helps you keep track of locations and distances.
Visual References
- Use images or sketches to inspire and flesh out your world.
Stay Consistent
Consistency
- Keep track of the details to maintain consistency. Use a worldbuilding bible or document to record important information.
Feedback
- Share your world with others and get feedback. Sometimes fresh eyes can spot inconsistencies or offer new ideas.
Let Your Characters Explore
Character Perspective
- Develop your world through the eyes of your characters. How do they interact with their environment? What do they know or believe about their world?
Be Flexible
Adapt and Evolve
- Be open to changing aspects of your world as your story develops. Sometimes the best ideas come during the writing process.

I was thinking something along the lines of explanation 1 or maybe something like irl economic neo-colonialism happening to Betrassus as it entered the intergalactic stage but explanation 3 intrigues me...
been thinking a LOT about the politics and economy of Betrassus (Princess Iolande’s planet) bc wdym they’ve achieved space travel but they’re still a medieval planet AND their main export is minerals and precious gemstones. how do u have the scientific advancements necessary for space travel without getting rid of feudalism AND ur main export is basically fossil fuels. wdym the Guardians thank the House of Betra for bringing peace to Betrassus for the past several centuries but the planet is still known for assassinations, like there’s no way the House of Betra got control of the planet without, um, waging war and conquering every other house? wdym Iolande’s brothers are chauvinistic as hell, implying a heavily patriarchal society, but Iolande gets to be queen of Betrassus without much fuss about her gender from literally anyone else?
#and totally not because of current events#anyway headcanon accepted#like i could totally see the evolution from mining/extraction export oriented economy -> capitalist elite class ->#cutthroat bloodthirsty nobility -> monarchy wherein one noble house rises above the rest -> back to...peace? stability at least?#i would LOOOOVE to see more alien worlds as case studies for how civilization can evolve differently. alas!!!!!

Headcanon: Working Closely with Dottore and Pantalone

Working with both Dottore and Pantalone is a constant balancing act. Dottore thrives in the realm of chaos, with his twisted experiments and disregard for ethical boundaries, while Pantalone is the epitome of control and calculated precision. Your role often involves navigating between these two extremes, ensuring that Dottore’s reckless endeavors don’t entirely destroy Pantalone’s well-constructed plans—or his profits.
When working with Dottore, you can never fully predict what kind of experiment or scheme he’ll drag you into. His workspace is full of dangerous contraptions and ominous, mysterious equipment. He treats everything like a puzzle he’s determined to solve, even if it means crossing lines others wouldn’t dare. He might request your assistance in something seemingly innocent, only for it to evolve into a disturbing and twisted experiment.
On the other hand, Pantalone runs things with the precision of a businessman. Every decision is meticulously calculated, and he expects nothing less from those who work closely with him. He’s always thinking several steps ahead, and his projects often revolve around securing wealth and influence for the Fatui. When working with him, you are exposed to high-stakes negotiations, economic manipulation, and subtle power plays.
You often find yourself playing the mediator between Dottore and Pantalone. Dottore’s mad scientist antics sometimes clash with Pantalone’s structured business endeavors. It’s not uncommon for Pantalone to become exasperated by Dottore’s unpredictable actions, and you’re the one who has to smooth things over, explaining Dottore’s reasoning—or lack thereof—while ensuring Pantalone’s operations aren’t compromised.
Joint meetings between the three of you can be tense. Dottore often speaks in vague, almost mocking tones about his experiments, while Pantalone raises a brow, always concerned about how much these ventures will cost the Fatui. You’ll feel the palpable tension as Pantalone tries to rein in Dottore’s more outlandish ideas, but Dottore never gives in easily.
While Dottore can be incredibly intimidating, there’s a certain thrill in working alongside someone as brilliant—and dangerous—as him. He occasionally lets you in on his more technical ideas, expecting you to keep up with his genius. He enjoys showing off his creations and theories, and if you’re able to contribute meaningfully, he’ll regard you with a mix of interest and amusement.
Pantalone, on the other hand, values your ability to manage things with poise. He expects you to understand the broader picture, the economy, and how to influence people subtly. He enjoys teaching you about the intricacies of wealth management and expects you to adopt his same level of attention to detail. If you manage to impress him, he might even offer you a more strategic role in the Fatui’s financial dealings.
Dottore has a twisted sense of humor, and you’ll often find yourself on the receiving end of it. He’ll make cryptic or morbid jokes about his experiments or the people involved, and you’ll need to keep your composure to avoid becoming another one of his “test subjects.” There’s a fine line between working with him and becoming part of his next experiment.
Pantalone, being a man of wealth, spoils those who earn his favor. If you manage to keep things running smoothly between him and Dottore, he will reward you handsomely—whether that’s through financial compensation, gifts, or special privileges. He values competence and loyalty, and he’s more than willing to show his appreciation through luxurious means.
Both Dottore and Pantalone hold significant power within the Fatui, but their power manifests in different ways. Dottore’s influence comes from fear and intellect, while Pantalone’s stems from wealth and control. You’ll need to navigate their distinct power dynamics carefully, knowing that they both have the ability to make or break you in the organization.
Earning trust from either Dottore or Pantalone isn’t easy. Dottore respects intellect and curiosity, while Pantalone values loyalty and efficiency. Over time, you may find yourself in a unique position where you’ve gained the trust of both men, becoming someone they rely on—Dottore for assistance with his experiments and Pantalone for managing the financial and strategic aspects of the Fatui.
Working with them can feel like being part of a dangerously effective machine. Pantalone’s resources fund Dottore’s more elaborate projects, and in return, Dottore’s inventions or discoveries can increase the Fatui’s power.
Working closely with Dottore and Pantalone is a challenging yet intriguing experience, requiring adaptability, wit, and a keen understanding of both chaos and order. It’s a delicate dance between madness and strategy, and if you manage to thrive in such an environment, you’ll earn the respect—and maybe even the protection—of two of the most powerful Harbingers in Teyvat.

How do you make your fantasy world feel lived-in?
Making a world feel lived-in requires more than just describing the landscape or architecture—it’s about creating the sense that the world has a history, a heartbeat, and its own rhythms of life. Here’s how I approach it:
Layered History: Every city, village, and ruin in my world has a past. I try to tie in subtle references to historical events, old conflicts, and forgotten legends that shape how people live today. By letting the remnants of the past—such as crumbling statues, faded murals, or cultural taboos—linger in the background, I create the impression that the world has been evolving long before the story begins.
Daily Life and Rituals: I focus on the small details of everyday life—what people eat, the music they listen to, how they celebrate and mourn. By showing the rhythm of daily activities, from bustling marketplaces to quiet moments in a temple, I give readers a glimpse into the culture and traditions of the world. These details make it feel like people are living their everyday lives outside the main plot, even if the protagonist isn’t there to see it.
Architecture and Geography: The physical layout of the world matters—how cities are built around rivers, mountains, or deserts, and how architecture reflects the culture and resources available. I like to create buildings and cities that tell stories themselves, with intricate designs, magical defenses, or decaying remnants of a once-glorious era. The way people interact with their environment adds depth to the world.
Senses: I try to engage all the senses when describing a setting—the smell of the sea, the taste of the air before a storm, the grit underfoot on a well-worn path. These sensory details make the world tangible, giving readers something they can feel, not just visualize.
The Mundane and the Magical: In a fantasy world, magic and the supernatural are often present, but I balance that by showing how the mundane aspects of life coexist with the extraordinary. Maybe magic is used casually, like enchanted brooms sweeping the streets, or it’s feared and tightly controlled. Either way, showing how the mystical fits into the everyday helps make the world feel more real.
Economy and Trade: Who trades with whom? What resources are valuable, and how do people get by in different regions? By grounding the world in economics—whether through thriving markets or resource scarcity—I give the setting a practical edge. These systems help define the way people interact, where power resides, and what drives the tensions in the world.
Flawed Systems: No world is perfect, and by including corrupt governments, failing infrastructures, or struggling populations, I show that this world isn’t static—it’s evolving, sometimes deteriorating. Conflict isn’t always about the grand battles; it’s also about the slow decay of a once-great city or the quiet resistance of a village against an oppressive regime.
By combining these elements, I make my worlds feel like places that exist beyond the plot—places with their own stories, lives, and rhythms that readers can immerse themselves in fully.

DAY 6274
Jalsa, Mumbai Aopr 20, 2025 Sun 11:17 pm
🪔 ,
April 21 .. birthday greetings and happiness to Ef Mousumi Biswas .. and Ef Arijit Bhattacharya from Kolkata .. 🙏🏽❤️🚩.. the wishes from the Ef family continue with warmth .. and love 🌺
The AI debate became the topic of discussion on the dining table ad there were many potent points raised - bith positive and a little indifferent ..
The young acknowledged it with reason and able argument .. some of the mid elders disagreed mildly .. and the end was kind of neutral ..
Blessed be they of the next GEN .. their minds are sorted out well in advance .. and why not .. we shall not be around till time in advance , but they and their progeny shall .. as has been the norm through generations ...
The IPL is now the greatest attraction throughout the day .. particularly on the Sunday, for the two on the day .. and there is never a debate on that ..
🤣
.. and I am most appreciative to read the comments from the Ef on the topic of the day - AI .. appreciative because some of the reactions and texts are valid and interesting to know .. the aspect expressed in all has a legitimate argument and that is most healthy ..
I am happy that we could all react to the Blog contents in the manner they have done .. my gratitude .. such a joy to get different views , valid and meaningful ..
And it is not the end of the day or the debate .. some impressions of the Gen X and some from the just passed Gen .. and some that were never ever the Gen are interesting as well :
The Printing Press (15th Century)
Fear: Scribes, monks, and elites thought it would destroy the value of knowledge, lead to mass misinformation, and eliminate jobs. Reality: It democratized knowledge, spurred the Renaissance and Reformation, and created entirely new industries—publishing, journalism, and education.
⸻
Industrial Revolution (18th–19th Century)
Fear: Machines would replace all human labor. The Luddites famously destroyed machinery in protest. Reality: Some manual labor jobs were displaced, but the economy exploded with new roles in manufacturing, logistics, engineering, and management. Overall employment and productivity soared.
⸻
Automobiles (Early 20th Century)
Fear: People feared job losses for carriage makers, stable hands, and horseshoe smiths. Cities worried about traffic, accidents, and social decay. Reality: The car industry became one of the largest employers in the world. It reshaped economies, enabled suburbia, and created new sectors like travel, road infrastructure, and auto repair.
⸻
Personal Computers (1980s)
Fear: Office workers would be replaced by machines; people worried about becoming obsolete. Reality: Computers made work faster and created entire industries: IT, software development, cybersecurity, and tech support. It transformed how we live and work.
⸻
The Internet (1990s)
Fear: It would destroy jobs in retail, publishing, and communication. Some thought it would unravel social order. Reality: E-commerce, digital marketing, remote work, and the creator economy now thrive. It connected the world and opened new opportunities.
⸻
ATMs (1970s–80s)
Fear: Bank tellers would lose their jobs en masse. Reality: ATMs handled routine tasks, but banks actually hired more tellers for customer service roles as they opened more branches thanks to reduced transaction costs.
⸻
Robotics & Automation (Factory work, 20th century–today)
Fear: Mass unemployment in factories. Reality: While some jobs shifted or ended, others evolved—robot maintenance, programming, design. Productivity gains created new jobs elsewhere.
The fear is not for losing jobs. It is the compromise of intellectual property and use without compensation. This case is slightly different.
I think AI will only make humans smarter. If we use it to our advantage.
That’s been happening for the last 10 years anyway
Not something new
You can’t control that in this day and age
YouTube & User-Generated Content (mid-2000s onward)
Initial Fear: When YouTube exploded, many in the entertainment industry panicked. The fear was that copyrighted material—music, TV clips, movies—would be shared freely without compensation. Creators and rights holders worried their content would be pirated, devalued, and that they’d lose control over distribution.
What Actually Happened: YouTube evolved to protect IP and monetize it through systems like Content ID, which allows rights holders to:
Automatically detect when their content is used
Choose to block, track, or monetize that usage
Earn revenue from ads run on videos using their IP (even when others post it)
Instead of wiping out creators or studios, it became a massive revenue stream—especially for musicians, media companies, and creators. Entire business models emerged around fair use, remixes, and reactions—with compensation built in.
Key Shift: The system went from “piracy risk” to “profit partner,” by embracing tech that recognized and enforced IP rights at scale.
This lead to higher profits and more money for owners and content btw
You just have to restructure the compensation laws and rewrite contracts
It’s only going to benefit artists in the long run
Yes
They can IP it
That is the hope
It’s the spread of your content and material without you putting a penny towards it
Cannot blindly sign off everything in contracts anymore. Has to be a lot more specific.
Yes that’s for sure
“Automation hasn’t erased jobs—it’s changed where human effort goes.”
Another good one is “hard work beats talent when talent stops working hard”
Which has absolutely nothing to with AI right now but 🤣
These ladies and Gentlemen of the Ef jury are various conversational opinions on AI .. I am merely pasting them for a view and an opinion ..
And among all the brouhaha about AI .. we simply forgot the Sunday well wishers .. and so ..

my love and the length be of immense .. pardon

Historically, Tariffs Have Almost Always Been Bad
The truly idiotic part of Conservatives'' message on the economy is that everything will be just fine once we move manufacturing back to the US.
Manufacturing in the US is the single most expensive enterprise for any business. All these companies didn't build entire factories and supply chains in 3rd world countries for kicks. Construction costs in the US are high. The labor costs in the US are outrageous, primarily due to the cost of healthcare. Universal healthcare would solve this, but conservatives insist that is impossible, even though the rest of the industrialized world does so just fine.
So now... American companies will be completely uncompetitive on a global market due to their labor costs. Will they sell more inside the US? Perhaps. But US consumers will pay far more than they do today for inferior products, since tariffs will make foreign competition impossible.
In most cases, tariffs benefit specific domestic industries or regions in the short term, but they generally result in higher prices for consumers. In certain cases, the growth of domestic industries due to tariff protection can lead to greater economic stability and more competition, which may bring down prices in the long term. However, consumers often suffer from higher prices on imported goods, which can offset those benefits.
The broader, long-term success of tariffs in benefiting U.S. consumers has generally been limited, especially in a globalized economy where the benefits of cheaper imports are substantial. When tariffs have been phased out or reduced in favor of free trade, consumers have typically seen lower prices and more variety in goods, leading to overall greater economic welfare.
So, while there have been cases where tariffs helped protect American jobs and industries, most instances of long-term benefits for consumers are less clear, as the global trade environment has evolved towards greater openness and lower barriers to trade.
Tell me how good products are in historically isolated countries like North Korea or the Soviet Union.. Now, I'm no stable genius like the Fanta Felon, however even I in my liberal idiocy can crack a book and learn from history.
I guess Conservatives can't read....

Every alien civilization has defining traits. All across known space you see species being referred to as having certain traits as part of their civilization. Warrior species, merchent species, scientific species. But almost none of those stereotypes predated their invention of hyperspace gates, almost every time a species gains such traits after its exposed to the rest of the galaxy and has to define itself based on how other species interact with it. Early in their development species have a balance of most traits, and usually end up only gaining a niche once they're part of the galactic economy.
For example, the Reneyth, the archtypical proud warrior species, weren't thought of as war like early in their history. Any physical adaptations people thought was originally evolved for war had much different purposes on their homeworld. But still, they are strong, and powerful. And because of that when they joined the galaxy's economy as a new race with few natrual recourses and little knowledge of the broader situation beyond their homeworld, they could only find work as mercenaries. It's all anyone wanted to hire them for. Some resisted at first but by now the business interests of the galactic megacorporations have made it so that mercenary work was the only real economy they could export to the rest of the galaxy. Now their culture surrounds war entirely, to the point where even their children are raised knowing that they will one day fight and likely meet a brutal end, and to the galaxy this is profitable.
Or take the Nimuryians. They're thought of as a race of peaceful clerics but it's really just because of how they made first contact. They were invaded, and though they weren't conquered most of their species died in that conflict. After finally being able to have peaceful contact with the rest of the galaxy the destruction to their economy left them in a state of constant poverty, unable to export themselves to do anything profitable. So they turned to their religion, and took an extremely conservative shift, killing off most of their planet's marginalized groups and letting their preists basically run their government. They now make what money they can selling their culture to tourists. And people just assume both their poverty and their conservativism is part of their blood, and that it would be wrong to try to change it.
Even the relatively well off Rexxins weren't originally a industrial race. They just happened to be on a planet with a lot of unique recourses, a large population, and a good place on hyperspace routes. Their planet becoming filled with factories and industry, with its many poor working in their constant industrial sites, and their many rich prospering well off of such things, is all due to the megacorporations being able to profit off of a society that was once no more industrial then any other planet of its scale. They never asked for their sky to be so rich with smog that no soul on their homeworld will ever see the star that they orbit. But it's better to have too much work then too little.
Even humans, as monstrous as they are, weren't always such an abnormal race. They might be an ancient race but we know what they are. Before they were nomadic cyborgs, raiding some, trading with others, and almost never touching down on planets, they were just a normal species. They were tricked into selling their homeworld to a startup upon first contact, in those ancient days. And they were forced to leave their homeworld very soon after. They only live exclusively in spaceships because they have no land of their own. They only modified their bodies in such horrifying ways, and turned to artificial reproduction, because that's what they had to do to survive. This may sound odd to some, because it happened so very long ago, but there were once humans who were born and died surrounded by nature, once lived alongside animals related to them, now only remembered in their art and mythology. There were once human lovers, who kissed under a golden sun. There was nothing about their species that made them what they are today before they lost their homeworld. But such is fate.
