Things that I SWEAR I'm not making up about the Star Trek franchise:
A shifty alien bartender, his brother, and his nephew were what happened at Roswell
There are three mutually contradictory canonical explanations for what exists at the centre of the Galaxy, none of which are "A fuck-off gigantic black hole"
Two of these things are, respectively, God and the Devil
(The crew got along well enough with the Devil, but Spock had to blow-up God with a torpedo)
One of the most compelling and sympathetic characters in the franchise is a hologram of Professor Moriarty who gained enough self-awareness to realise that he didn't need to be evil just because he was written that way
If you fly too fast, you turn into a salamander
(Said salamanders are actually the inevitable endpoint of human evolution)
The universe is balanced on the back of a giant koala (why is it smiling? What does it know!?)
There have been three separate groups of Space Nazis (not just aliens with a fascist government; literal Nazis with armbands and swastikas)
There are also: two (2) cowboy planets, two (2) planets that are just post-apocalyptic versions of Cold War-era Earth, one (1) planet ruled by Chicago mobsters from the 1920s, and one (1) version of Earth where the Roman Empire never fell
The Roman planet has its own Jesus
There is an anthropological law governing parallel planetary development that holds that planets are likely to recapitulate eras from Earth history
Because of the intervention of an ancient race of ur-humanoids, most sentient races in the galaxy look like human actors with rubber prostheses glued to their foreheads
There are so many planets centred around sex and hedonism that people in the fandom use the term "Roddenberry Sex Planet" to describe them
Jack the Ripper was an alien ghost
Amelia Earhart was abducted by aliens
If you have a high ESP score, you turn into a god when you try to fly outside of the Galaxy
The major antagonists are: Space Vikings/Samurai, Space Romans (not the Romans mentioned earlier), Space Fascists (not any of the nazi groups mentioned earlier), the Space British Empire (ruled by goo people), and Space Bees (except you'll turn into one if they sting you)
Klingons have two dicks
Borg assimilation can be catalyzed by eating car batteries

theres a concerning pattern that i am sure im not the only one who has noticed
the "punch a nazi" people are comparing the magen david to the swastika. does this not seem like blatant lead up to more violent antisemitic hate crimes?
like if literally any behavior is accepted towards the people they view as evil i wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing people straight up bragging about committing hate crimes

Before and during the Second World War, the Third Reich made an absolute fuckload of the Nazi flag. You know, the infamously iconic red flag with a white circle and black swastika in the middle.
It was both the national icon and, being the symbol of fascism, extremely important to churn out millions of the things.
The allies who fucked the Third Reich’s shit and made a Thousand-Year Reich fail to survive the decade employed millions of young men who all knew they were making history, and wanted a little souvenir to bring home. A Nazi flag made for a great one. They’d torn down the world’s greatest evil, captured the flag, a potent symbol that people have died for. Why not take it?
Eighty years later, when the youngest man to have fought in the war is 97 and they’re all dying out, families the world over are going through great-grandpa’s stuff and finding whole ass Nazi flags. They know he served in the War, they know he wasn’t a Nazi, he killed Nazis! But they don’t want a Nazi flag in their home in Chicago, or wherever they are. But it’s a genuine historical artefact. People fought to defend that flag, or to destroy the evil that flew it. You can’t just throw it away, it’s got an educational value to it. Oh, I know!
Send it to a museum!
The result of this?
Every military history museum refuses to take Nazi flags from people, because every day they get three or four offers to take ol great-grandpa’s nazi flag and put it on display to Warn The Next Generation.
Today I and a couple others from my museum opened a storage unit that hasn’t been catalogued since 2014. I joked before we entered, “I bet we’ll find a Nazi flag!” We found two.

I love the approach that the David Star (Symbol) and the David Star from the Israeli flag are not the same symbol and inches do not look the same
Tumblr media
The David Star is usually depicted this way (Occasionally, it is less negative, but blue has negative connotations)
Tumblr media
The color of the wood is no longer associated with the Israeli flag
Tumblr media
This does not change the fact that we still have the same problem, the connotations it will have in the future and how the symbol will be perceived by the victims of Israel.
An example would be the manji symbol
Tumblr media
Even though it is different from the Nazi swastika, it was still associated with it
Tumblr media
So logically, the manji should not be attacked so much when it appears, but as you can imagine, the way the Asian media portrayed it caused quite a lot of outrage in the Jewish community, even though the two symbols are different (Compared to the David Star and the flag Israel)
And here the question begins: won't David's star suffer the same fate as Manja? The symbol was used by genociders and lost its peaceful meaning?
Manji was a symbol of happiness, unfortunately, because of the madman who stole it, it lost its meaning and is constantly confused with its Nazi equivalent…
Saying that the David Star and the flag of Israel are different sounds irrational considering the history of the symbol which was also different and yet was considered evil by an evil man (And both symbols were more different than the David Star and the flag of Israel)
If Israel had not placed the David Star on its flag, no one would have combined the two. Unfortunately, the symbol was used here and has a high risk of becoming Manji 2.0
So yes, you can only blame Israel (or rather the Zionists) for using this symbol in their flag
Because who, when seeing a manji today, does not see a swastika? (Same in the previous century)
Here you can only blame bad people for using this symbol, not people who associate it with genocide
Unfortunately, bad people kill beautiful symbols and well, all we can do is accept the day that we will have to abandon or change something, because bad people destroyed this symbol, and once it is destroyed, it is difficult to get it back, especially when it is fresh. thing…
Although it is slightly ironic that those who associated the manja symbol with the swastika are now struggling with the fact that David Star is associated with Israel… I know, trivial, but still a bit interesting
But okay, I'll leave you with this ironic paradox :V

They really expect us to be fucking stupid don't they. I still remember Charleston! I still remember all the fucking Neo Nazi gatherings! The people who chanted awful antisemitic slogans. The swastikas being flown proudly. The way people wrung their hands about punching Richard Spencer.
Where were the cops with their tear gas and non-lethals? Where were they? Where were they when a neo nazi shot and killed protestors? When one run over people with his car? Where was the gratuitous violence?
Why must we accept that violence against college students is necessary?
Stupid. Abolish police. No more tears cried for fucking dead cops. Evil, all of them. I know we're not supposed to describe a group of people as monsters.
But cops are monsters. They serve no use, and should be annihilated.

This is not normal! White supremacists didn’t have boat parades for Bush! They didn’t have racist parading for Reagan. They certainly didn’t have Nazis marching for McCain! As a nation this heavy lean towards fascism needs put down in its beginnings. What was taken from you rarely is easily retained. Steps in that direction have imprinted the treads of fascist workings in our republic.
1. Undermine the legitimacy of the core foundations of a government. Make elections out to be shams or rigged.
2. Remove, replace or discredit a free press.
3. Delegitimize, the judiciary. Install your own.
4. Find a collective enemy to focus the nations problems upon ie. Immigrants, religious factions, race
5. Make this enemy seem less than human, disgusting and a threat to your way of life.
6. Insert a leader who boasts that he will save the nation, that him and him alone can solve these problems.
7. Create an atmosphere of fear. That if this leader isn’t implanted the nation won’t survive.
8. Create an us vs them mentality with your followers, framing it as good vs evil, right vs wrong. Placate to religious beliefs if possible.
9. Create minoritarian rule through extreme gerrymandering and electoral processes that increase the influence of the minority party. One where the numbers of votes cast doesn’t reflect the representation given.
10. Install family members in your administration, supplanting experts and professionals.

Guys, do you wanna see the worst of the worst of the mainstream media?
Newsweek sucks so bad. Check out this headline:
Tumblr media
The implication of this headline? Trump supporters are all Nazis and Nazi sympathizers, of course. The evil Nazi Republicans are totally cool being associated with Swastikas and Hitler.
That's what they mean when they say that Nazis were part of the boat parade.
Here are all of the posts that Newsweek shared throughout the article while equating Trump voters (and boaters) to Nazis.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1.3 million views on this X post, by the way.
And this video from the Nazi boat.
100k+ views on this tweet saying that Republicans are Nazis and "not even hiding it." Pushed by Newsweek.
But buried deep within the story, among all of the videos and photos of the Nazi Trump supporters, we do get this sidenote.
The user then posted a video of Trump supporters on a different boat using its engine to splash the boat bearing the swastikas with water. The people on the boat with the swastika flags can be heard saying 'Sieg heil, heil Trump.'
Tumblr media
Trump supporters actually got close to the boat and SOAKED them because they're a bunch of Nazi losers.
The user who posted the video said that they were probably Antifa infiltrators. Which, given the fact that half of the supposed Nazis in the country seem to be feds entrapping people, Lincoln Project plants, or Antifa posers seems like a decent guess.
Trump and MAGA have nothing to do with these losers.
But that won't stop Newsweek from their slandering.
Newsweek has contacted the Trump campaign via email for comment.
Yeah, because Trump has to individually condemn each and every loser Nazi who shows his face. You know, like how Kamala has to condemn by name each Hamas supporter who campaigns for her ... right? _______________________ __________________________
Not like false flagging is anything new.
Problem is legit nazis actually hate Trump, he's too friendly with Israel and Jewish people in general, including his daughter and son in law, for their liking.
Real question now is did those goons already have those flags and if so why.

I've really been around quite a lot this summer. Last Friday me and a friend went to Ornässtugan ("the Ornäs house") in Dalarna. It was built by a wealthy mine owner in the early 16th century and its loft served as a guesthouse. 1758 it was turned into a museum, which makes it the second oldest museum in Sweden. The exhibition centers around king Gustav Vasa and the stories of how he as a young nobleman came to Ornässtugan in 1520 when he was on the run from the Danish king Kristian II. The visit ended with Gustav fleeing through Ornässtugan’s outhouse with the help of Barbro Stigsdotter, the wife of the owner. Or so the story was told by the people, anyway.
What interested me, though, was all the magic and folklore that had been carved into the walls to protect the building. This was supposedly done because it lacked a fireplace, and fire is usually a good protection against evil spirits. On one door you could see that the wood had been burnt around the lock, to symbolize fire. There was also a sun cross, or swastika, carved beside the door (too bad the Nazis ruined this symbol forever).

An Open Letter Regarding the Holocaust Inversion & Blood Libel of the “Average Pace” Meme:
The person who shared the screenshotted post deleted it after I sent the following message. I truly believe they shared it out of ignorance & not malice; I cannot say the same of OP who created the graphic. I am sharing my deconstruction of its rhetoric & imagery here as a learning opportunity:
Nothing justifies the injustices Palestinians have faced, and what Netanyahu is doing is vile. No country should be above criticism, nor its leaders above condemnation, but this is not that.
What people like OP are doing is weaponizing legitimate atrocities to spread the antisemitic narratives of Holocaust Inversion (an offshoot of Holocaust Revision & Denial that claims “The new Nazis are Jews”) and Blood Libel.
And no, the fact that these libels are made in criticism of Israel does not absolve them of being antisemitic narratives that predate the existence of the State of Israel. As if to hammer in that point, that is not the flag of Israel that the creator of this agitprop decided to equate to the Swastika—that is the Magen David. That’s just the symbol for Judaism.
Worse, to impose the Magen David over images of blood (especially what is implicitly the blood of children) is a direct invocation of Blood Libel, the antisemitic accusation that Jewish leaders thirst for the blood of children. This libel has incited the mass slaughter of Jews since long before the Shoah, and is still being used to this day to incite violence against Jews through Qanon & accusations that Israelis drink & bathe in Palestinian blood.
And if it truly weren’t about the Jewishness of Israel, why would OP pick the Shoah specifically? There have been countless other mass killings in the world, many with much greater resemblance to Israel/Palestine than Jews in Nazi Germany (see: ethnic cleansings in Liberia & India/Pakistan for instance). Meanwhile, the only things The Shoah/WWII and Israel-Palestine have in common is people dying and Jews being present. So why specifically invoke the slaughter of Jews to criticize Israel if it is not about invoking the Jewishness of Israel?
That doesn’t even get into how cherrypicked those numbers are to the point the exact same “average pace” metric could easily be used (and in fact is, by the German far-right) to present the Bombing of Dresden by the Allies—a campaign that killed more than 25,000 German civilians in 72 hours in an area much bigger & less densely populated than Gaza with a fraction of the bombs that Israel has used—as comparable to the death camps.
This rhetoric does not aid Palestinians in any way. In fact it drags the movement down by providing ammunition that can be used to paint all criticism of Israel as antisemitic & give people who just hate Palestinians the casus belli they need to shut it down. The only thing it accomplishes is hurting Jews; it twists the knife in the wounds left in our community, it trivializes the Shoah by universalizing it or presenting it as “the lesser of two evils”, and it incites violence by equating Jews to Nazis.

I witnessed All One Thingism in the flesh in Atlanta while reporting on the “Stop Cop City” saga. What began as a very specific protest against the construction of an expensive new public safety facility in a Georgia forest by environmentalists, police, and prison abolitionists got subsumed into “Free Palestine.” After October 7, anarchists marching in the streets of Atlanta increasingly donned keffiyehs, waved Palestinian flags, and held signs that said: “From Atlanta to Palestine” (which I believe is a fairly big 6,400-mile line).
There’s no better embodiment of this trend than James “Fergie” Chambers, the wealthy tattooed Left-wing heir in Atlanta. Last summer, Chambers helped bankroll the Stop Cop City movement with millions from his Cox family fortune and attended protests in person. Then, in December, he announced he was converting to Islam. He’s currently living in Tunisia and directing his big bucks into anti-Zionism causes.
And lest you think it’s just blue-haired college baristas with these views, consider the author with the worst book title of all time who recently posted among the most despicable Tweets of all time. That would be courtesy of Malcolm Harris, the author of S--- Is F---ed Up and Bulls--- and veritable Napoleon Dynamite of communist writers.
Earlier this month on X, Harris responded to CNN’s Jake Tapper’s report that the Pennsylvania synagogue he had bar mitzphaed at had been vandalised with a swastika. Harris didn’t condemn the anti-Semitic graffiti but indirectly praised it. The meaning of the Nazi symbol had been reversed from bad to good, Harris said, “from a Nazi threat to a condemnation of genocide.”
America is evil, Hamas is good, and swastikas are now woke. This is your brain on All One Thingism.

The Old Man Logan comic is a lot weirder than I would’ve expected. It starts off how you’d imagine with Logan as like a jacked up Clint Eastwood type living with his family in quasi dust bowl poverty while the world is shit bc the Marvel villains managed to score a huge win and wipeout all the heroes and divided the US between themselves with Red Skull being the President of it all I guess but Logan and his family live in the territory of the villain known as Hulk as in Bruce Banner is evil and also his minions are the inbred offspring of himself and She-Hulk. Eventually Logan’s quest for rent money takes him to DC where he was presumed dead and brought into Red Skulls trophy room and it’s made very clear this is full Nazi Red Skull and not just evil genius Red Skull because he put up swastikas everywhere and his soldiers all have swastika armbands and while I’m saying this it should be mentioned that one of the villain lords in the setting is Magneto who not only cut a deal with -Red Skull whose soldiers have swastika armbands- but also killed Scarlet Witch so that Red Skull’s alliance would win and just tells Baron Zemo that it better be worth it or something

How the reptilian alien conspiracy theory is antisemitism, in a nutshell
Since ancient times, Jews have been falsely accused of cannibalistic crimes.
During WWII, antisemitic propaganda depicted Jews as snakes and dragons.
In the early 1950s, George Hunt Williamson (an author with ties to American fascist William Dudley Pelley) wrote a book claiming that the swastika was a symbol used by supposedly good aliens, and described evil reptilian aliens from Orion in ways that sounded very much like antisemitic Jewish stereotypes.
In the late 1990's, David Icke claimed that the antisemitic hoax The Protocols of the Elders of Zion was in fact true, only the evil conspirators were evil reptilian aliens. He claimed that Judaism was a lie created by the evil reptilians to create and manipulate the Jews, and falsely claimed that European Jews aren't even real Jews. (By way of the Khazar myth.) He claimed that these "fake" Jews are possessed and controlled by reptilian entities, who control and manipulate the world. (The Jewish banker myth with lizards.)
Depending on who you ask, these reptilians consume human blood, human flesh, adrenochrome, or human fear. These are all forms of blood libel.
There is a strong current of belief that these allegedly "fake" Jews must be rounded up and executed.
If those regarded as "real" Jews aren't considered inherently evil, they are expected to eventually convert to Christianity or New Age. (IE, stop being Jewish.)
There is a strong current of belief that anyone who refuses to convert to Christianity or New Age must be executed.
The conspiracy theory has strong overlap with QAnon (many reptilian believers are QAnons), which is also antisemitic and pushes toward a Christofascist government.

A part of me is terrified of what will it take for most of these "anti-zionists" to realize that there has been a large rise of antisemitism, specifically in the left.
Will it be another mass shooting at a synagogue, but this time done by an anti-zionist college student? Will it be another October 7th? Or even worse?
Idk what it will take for these people to realize they're being blatantly antisemitic, evidence won't work, and I doubt every single person here can get a check from reality.
Hi Nonnie!
I'm not sure there is anything that will make them recognize this left wing antisemitism, but more importantly, I don't think anything can make them care about it. Take the Holocaust, did the Nazis need its full scale to be published, to realize that Jew hatred was on the rise in Europe at the time? No, they knew. They just didn't care. It wasn't a problem. If anything, it was a good thing.
The anti-Israel crowd has cast Jews as the ultimate evil in their world view (powerful, rich, capitalist, white, colonizers, oppressors, representatives of the west), so at this point, antisemitism doesn't bother them (except they will still call it out when it comes from white supremacists, and they think this "proves" they're not antisemitic). It's not a problem to them, it's the "right stance" against oppressors. That's why they can look at Oct 7 and justify it, dismiss its horrors, or (when called out on the double standards they're employing to do the former) deny they even happened. And it makes them feel good, they think they're on the right side of history, and that this proves their moral superiority (just like the Nazis' antisemitism boosted their sense of racial superiority).
Oct 7 was... as extreme as I hope we'll ever see the Israeli-Arab conflict get. It was the single bloodiest day for Jews since the Holocaust, but also the single bloodiest day in the conflict. I went back and forth over every event in the conflict, and I can't find a single day that was as bloody as this, not on the Israeli side, and not on the other side. And the anti-Israeli crowd still don't care, showing it's not really about human life to them, or they would.
If Oct 7 didn't get to them, nothing done to the Jews ever would. Maybe if they'd end up being victimized by this same sort of hatred and violence, maybe that would change their POV, though I still wouldn't wish that on ANYONE, and I suspect some would be able even then to employ the kind of mental gymnastics that explain why what was done to the Jews was just, while what was done to them was wrong.
And in the context of the rise in antisemitism globally, outside of Israel, if they don't feel any symapthy upon seeing the vids of Jewish students having to barricade themselves inside a uni library for almost an hour, while an angry mob bangs on the doors, chants "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," and the Jewish kids have to wait for the police to get them out safely, or upon learning about the homicide of a 69 years old Jewish man just because he was out demonstrating, or care about the countless vids with testimonies from Jews the world over talking about how scared they are, or stop to wonder why are there swastikas at anti-Israel rallies, then these people are too far gone. They just don't care about Jews.
What I think matters is to relentlessly call them out on their antisemitism, to make sure they never forget they're vilifying Jews (and the Jewish state), and treating Jews with complete indifference when it comes to Jewish rights, safety and lives. I believe we need to make it socially unacceptable to treat Jews this way under the guise of being anti-Israeli, just like it is socially unacceptable to say they're gonna go "death con 3 on the Jews." And I think it matters that we keep talking to the people who aren't brainwashed, who do care about Palestinians lives, care about those for real (not just as a tool to attack Jews), and at the same time they care about human lives for real, so they're capable of feeling real empathy for Jews. It matters that we remind them, that true compassion takes both sides into account, and advocates for what is best for both in this conflict. And that this IS a complex conflict, one in which there are no clear cut villains, and no easy solutions, but we have to keep striving to make it better even when it's hard.
I'm doing my best. The more of us do this, the more hope there is.
Thank you for this ask, I hope my reply somewhat helps! Have a good day and take care! xoxox

For some reason I have abruptly returned to being insane about Cabaret. It's a musical about the rise of fascism and the tragedy that is pretending everything is fine until it's too late. It's also a heartwrenching doomed romance. It's unusually direct and neutral-to-positive about its depiction of sex work given how mainstream it is. It's about vice and desperation and fear and horrible, horrible coping mechanisms. It gets the audience invested in not one but two doomed romances AND a doomed friendship that are all about to be torn apart by the impending rise of Nazism. By the end of the play the majority of characters have had their lives torn apart by this one encroaching evil and we have to watch it happen. We have to watch them make all the bad decisions in which they might have been able to save themselves, but they didn't, because they were human and fallible. Because they didn't want to see what was happening around them, or take a risk, or they just couldn't quite bring themselves to believe that getting a happy ending was an option. We can see all the ways it might have gone differently.
I can't get over how incredible our university production of it was. I may be biased but I love it more than the Broadway version. For one thing, we had a nonbinary actor playing the Emcee, which meant that their romance with a Jewish woman came across as both Jewish and queer and like the biggest possible fuck you to the Nazis. But also, they were just such a good actor. The sad-and-terrified-but-forcing-themself-to-be-okay vibes in the final scene were so visceral and haunting. "Where are your troubles now? Forgotten? I told you so. We have no troubles here. Here, life is beautiful. The women are beautiful. Even the orchestra is beautiful." They sounded so broken in this scene. The juxtaposition between the words and the way they said them was like being punched in the gut. I wish I could tell them this but I do not even slightly know this person.
The depiction of the Nazis is also amazing because it shows them as people. Not in a "oh we should sympathize with them" way, but in a "oh fuck they could be ANYONE and you'd never know it" way. As Fräulein Schneider says, they are her friends and neighbors. She expects her friends and neighbors to support her when she decides to marry Herr Schultz, a Jewish man, but as it turns out, some of them are Nazis and make it very clear that if she doesn't break off the engagement, they'll turn on her.
We LIKE the Nazi character, right up until he takes off his coat and shows off the Swastika armband. We had no idea he was harboring such nastiness in his heart - he seemed nice! He was charming. He was kind. He was Clifford's and our introduction to Berlin, and he made a damn good first impression. He was very pleasant to Herr Schultz right up until the he realized he was a Jew, and it was chilling to watch that scene unfold. I remember sitting backstage every night and waiting to hear everyone go dead silent at the reveal. Chilling.
The other thing Caberet does so well is the "why should we care about politics? what does that have to do with us?" angle. Sally says it outright - she'd rather know nothing about what's happening, and even when confronted with it, she doesn't care. She doesn't understand why Cliff won't help Ernst anymore after finding out exactly what those smuggled goods were for - as far as she's concerned, they need the money and the politics are irrelevant. The politics being Nazism, of course. She has absolutely no malice towards the people the Nazis are hurting - she's just incredibly, horribly naive. Doesn't it just make your blood run cold?
It's extra creepy to watch this play in the political environment of the last year or so - the way things have been getting progressively more and more scary for queer people. There were definitely a few times when I read some particularly awful news coming out of Florida and felt very much like Cliff grappling with the horrible realization that he needed to get out of Berlin yesterday. And trying to explain that sheer terror to my straight relatives did feel reminiscent of Clint's failed attempts to make Sally see reason. But it didn't affect her directly, so she didn't care. She had her own life and her own priorities and why should she care about things that don't affect her? I hope things here and now never get that bad, but the exact reason it's so disturbing is that people in early-1930s Berlin never guessed it would get that bad either.
And this is a story based on true events. It's fictionalized, but it isn't made up. Cliff is more or less an author insert for the very real person who wrote the book the musical is based on: Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. And by the way, Christopher Isherwood was gay.
Tl;dr Go see Cabaret and have your heart broken in like fifteen different ways. But read the trigger warnings first.

The Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism
Antisemitism is discrimination, prejudice, hostility or violence against Jews as Jews (or Jewish institutions as Jewish).
It is racist to essentialize (treat a character trait as inherent) or to make sweeping negative generalizations about a given population. What is true of racism in general is true of antisemitism in particular.
What is particular in classic antisemitism is the idea that Jews are linked to the forces of evil. This stands at the core of many anti-Jewish fantasies, such as the idea of a Jewish conspiracy in which “the Jews” possess hidden power that they use to promote their own collective agenda at the expense of other people. This linkage between Jews and evil continues in the present: in the fantasy that “the Jews” control governments with a “hidden hand,” that they own the banks, control the media, act as “a state within a state,” and are responsible for spreading disease (such as Covid-19). All these features can be instrumentalized by different (and even antagonistic) political causes.
Antisemitism can be manifested in words, visual images, and deeds. Examples of antisemitic words include utterances that all Jews are wealthy, inherently stingy, or unpatriotic. In antisemitic caricatures, Jews are often depicted as grotesque, with big noses and associated with wealth. Examples of antisemitic deeds are: assaulting someone because she or he is Jewish, attacking a synagogue, daubing swastikas on Jewish graves, or refusing to hire or promote people because they are Jewish.
Antisemitism can be direct or indirect, explicit or coded. For example, “The Rothschilds control the world” is a coded statement about the alleged power of “the Jews” over banks and international fi- nance. Similarly, portraying Israel as the ultimate evil or grossly exaggerating its actual influence can be a coded way of racializing and stigmatizing Jews. In many cases, identifying coded speech is a matter of context and judgement, taking account of these guidelines.
Denying or minimizing the Holocaust by claiming that the deliberate Nazi genocide of the Jews did not take place, or that there were no extermination camps or gas chambers, or that the number of victims was a fraction of the actual total, is antisemitic.
Applying the symbols, images and negative stereotypes of classical antisemitism (see guidelines 2 and 3) to the State of Israel.
Holding Jews collectively responsible for Israel’s conduct or treating Jews, simply because they are Jewish, as agents of Israel.
Requiring people, because they are Jewish, publicly to condemn Israel or Zionism (for example, at a political meeting).
Assuming that non-Israeli Jews, simply because they are Jews, are necessarily more loyal to Israel than to their own countries.
Denying the right of Jews in the State of Israel to exist and flourish, collectively and individually, as Jews, in accordance with the principle of equality.
Israel and Palestine: examples that, on the face of it, are not antisemitic
(whether or not one approves of the view or action)
Supporting the Palestinian demand for justice and the full grant of their political, national, civil and human rights, as encapsulated in international law.
Criticizing or opposing Zionism as a form of nationalism, or arguing for a variety of constitutional arrangements for Jews and Palestinians in the area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean. It is not antisemitic to support arrangements that accord full equality to all inhabitants “between the river and the sea,” whether in two states, a binational state, unitary democratic state, federal state, or in whatever form.
Evidence-based criticism of Israel as a state. This includes its institutions and founding principles. It also includes its policies and practices, domestic and abroad, such as the conduct of Israel in the West Bank and Gaza, the role Israel plays in the region, or any other way in which, as a state, it influences events in the world. It is not antisemitic to point out systematic racial discrimination. In general, the same norms of debate that apply to other states and to other conflicts over national self-determina- tion apply in the case of Israel and Palestine. Thus, even if contentious, it is not antisemitic, in and of itself, to compare Israel with other historical cases, including settler-colonialism or apartheid.
Boycott, divestment and sanctions are commonplace, non-violent forms of political protest against states. In the Israeli case they are not, in and of themselves, antisemitic.
Political speech does not have to be measured, proportional, tempered, or reasonable to be protected under article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights or article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights and other human rights instruments. Criticism that some may see as excessive or contentious, or as reflecting a “double standard,” is not, in and of itself, antisemitic. In general, the line between antisemitic and non-antisemitic speech is different from the line between unreasonable and reasonable speech.
