A aromantic prince has been turned into a frog

It's a curse only true love can break

So he spends months trying to fall in love, trying to stop being who he is because god dammit he's not a frog either!

After yet another unsuccessful date, he begins to despair for his future which is looking more amphibious by the minute.

A loud noise disturbs his brooding as something comes crashing through the undergrowth. He's barely gotten his little froggy feet underneath him before a tiny (but still quite big if you're a frog!) hand is scooping him into the air.

A little kid sees the frog on the grass.

They grab it before he has the chance to protest and kiss him square on his slimy little head.

He transforms back into a very confused human.

No, this is not a Renesme moment, gross. Not romantic love or even friendship, just the blind joy of a kid who thinks frogs are super cool. The child loves every amphibian she's ever set eyes on, but that doesn't make it any less real. And she grows up to be a biologist who studies frogs, because of course she does. The prince pays her tuition as thanks for returning him to his proper form. She was like 4 years old at the time and doesn't even remember the frog incident - there's just some random rich dude paying for her college because of something she doesn't remember, but she's not complaining because grad school is expensive as heck.

Here's my take on the wicked queen from the Brothers Grimm Snow White to accompany my Snow White design. It took forever to land on colours for the second outfit but I'm actually pretty happy with how these ended up. I gave her a hand mirror, just one out of many mirrors in her possession probably. I also gave her a name for my own headcanon of her.

I just clicked what my favorite adaptation/version of Cinderella is. I mean, I kind of knew back then, but I didn't realize it because at the time Cinderella wasn't a story I was really interested about, and I hadn't gone into the entire Cinderella rabbit hole. But if you ask me what my favorite Cinderella retelling is, it is definitively the story of Emberella as presented by Terry Pratchett in his "Witches Abroad" novel.

Yes it is kind of a parody and deconstruction of the Cinderella story (and a quite excellent one at that), but it also works very well as its own fairytale - plus it literaly predicted/foresaw Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" 18 YEARS before the movie was released.... and while slapping so hard the face of the Disney company.

Yeah, Emberella is my favorite version of Cinderella.

Quick Evil Note

To all my wicked darlings, I have now received rather a lot of messages asking me about the influences of Long Live Evil. And I wish to get messages about LLE and truly appreciate the ones I do get! And I wish to answer them. But answers about influences are tricky.

The book has been out in the US for a little over two weeks, and it’s going so well so far, I couldn’t be more delighted and appreciative about its reception.

But also I’ve been informed (not asked) that two of my characters are obviously somehow both Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy of Harry Potter, and Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji of Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. (Very puzzling as I don’t think these pairings - and one isn’t a pair - have much in common with each other or with mine. Vague hostility against a vaguely academic backdrop for a bit? For the record… in the book everyone is an adult and I don’t even have any academic backdrops to be vaguely hostile in front of…) This hasn’t happened to me in a long time, because I haven’t had an original novel out in a long time due to illness, and it is upsetting to always be discussed differently than writers who didn’t openly link their real names to their fan identity.

I have very different feelings and new appreciation for fandom than I once had. It’s been amazing to see and meet people who have stuck with me for decades. People are generally way more open and affectionate to and within fandom than they once were. Love matters to me a good deal more than hate. But getting death threats in your early 20s for excitedly telling your Internet friends you were going to publish a book does mark the psyche, and so does having your characters dismissed as other people’s characters.

And we can say there is nothing wrong with fanfiction or writing fanfiction and there isn’t! Fanfiction is great and can be genius. Terry Pratchett wrote Jane Austen fanfiction, and didn’t (and shouldn’t) have people saying Captain Wentworth = Captain Vimes. Still, when a TV show is discussed as ‘like fanfiction’ or when Diana Gabaldon said she didn’t like fanfiction and many said ‘YOU write fanfiction’ it isn’t intended in any kind spirit, even when it’s fannish folk saying it. And it’s just generally odd to have everyone call your apple a tomato, and has had professional consequences for me in the past.

However! All the asks I’ve received have been very kind, and I do want to answer them. I do want to talk about my influences because they are manifold and because I actually think it’s important to always talk about influences. I don’t believe stories exist in isolation - we tell tales in a rich tradition, and also a story doesn’t come alive to me all the way until it’s heard or read.

Long Live Evil is a love letter to fandom: it’s chock full of references to many many stories I’ve loved, to fairytales, myths and legend and Internet memes and epic fantasy and meta. My acknowledgements are endless partly for this reason. I do owe a great debt to many portal fantasies and archetypes and musicals and jokes about genre and plays through the ages, though I do think of my characters as themselves and nobody else.

I was frankly tempted to go ‘Yes I stole EVERYTHING! Bwhahaha!’ But while I am thoroughly enjoying and finding great freedom in my villain era, I do want to talk sincerely to you all as well, especially when asked sincerely interested questions.

But I’m a little scared to do so and have people say ‘AHA! Now we know what it’s fanfiction of’ (it’s happened before) or ignore me and go ‘we know the truth!’ (it’s happened before) and to feel like I’ve injured my book. Long Live Evil means more to me than any other and I really want to get talking about it right, and make sure it has the best reception I can give it.

So. Questions on all Evil topics very very welcome but answers to influence questions may come slowly. Bear with me. I am working on this!

Fairytale

Issy stared at her reflection in the cracked mirror above the sink. She sighed. Another day at her dead end job, another day of feeling like she was going nowhere. Her days were bad but at least her nights were better. At night, she had Fred.

Fred was her light in the darkness, a kind man who treated her with a gentleness she hadn’t known in years. They had met through a dating app of all things but regardless of how they met, she couldn't have been happier with Fred. His daughter was a different story.

Amber was an 18-year-old whirlwind of disdain, she seemed to make it her mission to torture Issy whenever Fred wasn’t around.

"You know he's never going to marry you, he'll eventually get tired of you and date someone else."

Issy just grinned and bared it, knowing that soon Amber would head off to college and wouldn’t be as much of an issue. Issy still tried periodically to connect with her, wanting to find some common ground but nothing seemed to work.

One night after slaving away making a nice dinner, Issy pushed open Amber’s bedroom door to tell her it was ready.

“Ugh don’t you knock?” Amber said with a roll of her eyes. Issy was about to leave when she spotted a stack of old books near the door. Picking one up she flipped to rough its worn pages.

“Did you used to read these? They were my favourite growing up.” Issy said trying to make yet another connection.

“Yeah I read them when I was like 5, that’s what I’m throwing them out. But by all means take them, they’re written for babies and losers like you.” Amber said with a sneer as she pushed past Issy and left the room.

Frustrated and hurt, Issy grabbed another book from the shelf. “I wish my life was like a fairytale.” She muttered to herself. Suddenly, the book flew open, and a burst of magic erupted from its pages, filling the room with a blinding light.

Issy watched in awe as their modest home transformed into a grand castle. The magic swirled around her, wrapping her in its embrace. She felt a rush of exhilaration as her clothes began to change.

“Oh my gosh! It’s coming true! I’m becoming a fairytale princess!” She said smiling to herself but her clothes weren’t becoming white, they were becoming black and tight. The years fell off of her as her features sharpened, her lips grew fuller, her tits larger, her waist thinner, and her hair turned jet black.

Realization dawned on her, she wasn’t becoming a princess, she was becoming an evil queen. The changes felt too good to resist, and she embraced the darkness, letting it corrupt her soul. As the transformation completed, she noticed the book had changed too. It was now a dark magic spellbook. Issy smirked, feeling a newfound power surging within her.

“Perfect. Just like me.” She mused coolly.

Taking the book in her hands she set off to find Amber, the tables were about to turned. After all, she had to play her role as an evil stepmother now.

Ok I know I'm heavily biased here but like I kinda love that Astarion's romance is one of the few in this type of video game where you basically end up canonically unmarried and childfree in his "good" ending? Just travelling the world??

More of Ever After High redraws. I always liked Raven as a kid it made sense because I always had a liking for the protagonists especially if they were girls as well as darker in story and color scheme. I always found her character and goals interesting and I still do to this day.
