as a Sid Girlie™ it amuses me highly that my absolutely favorite penguins games I've ever attended have all been about geno. the 11-2 barn-burner against detroit in 2022 when he scored a hat trick; his 1001th game the very next season where I had friends in town and we lost our shit and roared with the crowd chanting geno geno geno as geno went out and won the whole damn thing in the shootout, and now this: getting to take one of my favorite relatives to her first hockey game and getting this ridiculous, topsy-turvey chaos game that resulted in two milestones and a cornucopia of fandom joy. I love this guy so so so much. he is the reason I get to watch the most entertaining hockey of my life. he IS the show.

You find out that you have a knack at playing piano at a very young age.

It’s an accident, really—you walk past a piano in a mall and feel a strange magnetism to it.

Your parents think it’s good that your soulmate is starting at a young age—they like to joke that they got you free piano lessons.

Evgeni feels his head crammed with stories from the moment he can think properly. He feels a constant urge to write and create characters and build worlds.

It’s an accident, too, when you find out that you can speak and understand Russian. You hear a couple in the grocery store discussing the difference between cucumbers and zucchini and you very politely explain the difference. You don’t even recognize that it was a different language until they thank you and your mother gives you a complete look of shock.

You’re much older when you start working at the biggest auction company in New York City and you meet a Russian security guard.

You’re eating lunch when you overhear him mention his heritage, and it makes you park up more than you should.

But then he mentions that he doesn’t actually speak Russian, and you don’t bother to ask if he plays piano.

And then a new security guard joins the team, and when he introduces himself as Evgeni in his adorable thick accent, you just know. You know in your heart that it’s him.

But what if it’s not? There’s so many crushing fears that accompany finding your soulmate.

So you plan a way to tell him without really telling him.

You wait until the building is cleared out and only the employees are left, and then you set yourself at the piano in the middle of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s showroom.

You play the song that always comes to mind first—the one that’s muscle memory for your soulmate and,subsequently, you.

Evgeni hears it instantly, and it takes him a moment to realize that it’s not him playing, but someone else.

Except no one else has ever played his song before because it’s his.

He fights the urge to sprint to the showroom, and when he sees it’s you playing his heart nearly bursts.

Coming home late from work always sucked. You were tired and ready to kick off your shoes and relax. But climbing the stairs to your apartment, you paused and breathed in deeply.

Evgeni was cooking.

Instantly feeling lighter, you climbed the rest of the steps and turned into the kitchen to see Evgeni at the stove. He hadn't even changed from work, his suit jacket thrown over one of the chairs at the table and his sleeves rolled up. As soon as you took this all in, he was turning to greet you with a quick peck on the lips.

"Go change, дорогой. You've had a long day, I've got this. Go." He gently and sweetly ushered you off to the bedroom and you couldn't keep the smile off your face at how sweet he was. Changing quickly, you stepped back into the kitchen. Sliding up behind Evgeni, you wrapped your arms around his waist and pressed soft kisses to his shoulders. hello.  i’m  blue!  may  i  introduce  you  to  my  olympic  gold  medalist  and  resident  hag,  ilya?  i  am  writing  a  full  bio  and  i  have  a  full  stat  page?

anyway.  the  gist  of  him  is.  he  was  a  very,  very  successful  skater  from  st.  petersburg,  one  of  the  greats,  i  view  his  career  as  a  mash-up  evgeni  plushenko,  daisuke  takahashi  &  yuzuru  hanyu.  which  is  a  lot,  ik.  please  forgive  me.  he  was  a  versatile  medal  and  record  earning  powerhouse  who  was  never  content  with  himself,  always  pushing  to  be  more,  to  do  more.  BUT  !  he  pretty  much  burned  himself  out,  he  developed  osteoarthritis  in  his  left  knee  and  hip  from  repetitive  strain  and  ignored  injuries…  that  pretty  much…  euthanised  his  career.  my  mans  can  barely  walk  some  days.

so.  he  retired  from  the  sport  completely,  though  bitter  and  unsatisfied  about  it.  bought  a  cute  little  apartment  in  manhattan  with  as  many  stairs  as  possible  to  punish  himself.  he  collects  antique  guitars  and  artisanal  coffee,  teaches  skating  to  kids  in  his  spare  time  though  he  is  open,  somewhat,  to  accepting  a  coaching  offer.

hmm.  connection  wise  ?

he  has  a  younger  half  sibling  who  used  to/does  skate  but  couldn’t  make  it  out  from  under  ilya’s  shadow  until  the  death  of  his  career  (half  korean,  half  white  or  just  white  if  they’re  a  step  sibling.)

ok, hear me out... an au where geno isnt a hockey player, maybe he’s like a student in pittsburgh or an intern at the zoo or something? and he sees this Really Hot Guy (spoiler: its Sid) at a coffee shop a few times and works up the courage to ask him out. he doesn’t realise that it’s Sidney Crosby, Captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins. sid is VERY blushy and accepts geno’s invitation, and they exchange numbers. so geno plans this super romantic first date and tells Really Hot Guy Named Sid (1/2)

that it’s a surprise. so the date comes around and geno tells Sidney to meet him at this park, and once he get there he realises that geno has planned for them to go skating at an out door rink. before sid can even say anything geno is like “is okay if you not know how to skate, sid. im best teacher” and winks at him and that’s how Sidney Crosby end up pretending like he has absolutely no idea how to skate just so that geno will hold onto him and keep him close. Oh my god I love this so much I want 10K….what if….zoo vet Geno who hasn’t watched a hockey game since leaving Russia and Easily flustered Sidney…it goes like:

Sidney panics when he sees the rink, but by the time he dares to meet Geno’s eyes, he’s met with not the smug ‘gotcha’ expression he’d expected, but polite nervousness.

“I haven’t skate in long time, but you know, is okay if you not know how to skate. I’m best, teach you how.” Then Geno offers his hand. “Let’s go?”

Sidney gapes, then shuts his mouth as his face begins to heat up. “Is this just an excuse to get me to hold your hand?”

Geno grins then, cheeky and handsome and oh, Sidney’s heart is going to beat right out of his chest at this rate. “Maybe. Is it work?”

Sidney laces his fingers into Geno’s, and he stamps down that flutter when he thinks of how well their hands fit together. “Yeah, you got me.”

They step on the ice, and Sidney thinks he does a fantastic job of stumbling around like a clown. He casually slips forward into Geno’s chest one to many times, just so Geno can right him with a “Woah, you okay?” and a steady hand on his bicep. 

“Baby step,” Geno laughs. “You like deer.”

“Maybe you’re not that great at teaching,” Sidney teases back.

“Not deer,” Geno corrects. “Moose. Baby moose lost in Canadian parking lot.” 

Geno doesn’t know who he is. It’s such a wonderful, wonderful feeling to be seen not as Sidney Crosby, but just–

“Sid,” Geno murmurs, guiding him into a smooth slide across the ice, his hand like an anchor. “Easy.”

It’s perfect when Geno kisses him, sweet and gentle like Sidney knows him to be. 

It’s not perfect when Sidney hears Jake and Tanger behind him.

“Sid!” Tanger crows, whereas Jake mainly looks embarrassed, like he’d caught his parents kissing. “Sid, you never told me you had a man.”

He skates over easily, and it’s only then he notices Jake holding Alex’s hands and leading him across the ice. 

“Babysitting,” Tanger says, like an explanation. Then, to Geno, “I’m Kris, Sidney’s best friend.”

The ego on this guy sometimes. But Geno extends his hand just as easily. “Nice to meet. I’m Evgeni. Call me Geno, easy for Americans.”

“I’m not, but I can do that,” Tanger says. “So. Skating on a date? I’ve always expected this from you, Sid.”

Sidney kind of wants to fold his hands over Tanger’s throat sometimes and just give him a few good shakes. Geno looks confused as his brows furrow together. “What you mean? This is Sidney’s first time skating.”

Tanger blinks. He looks at Geno. Then at Sidney trying to steady his features so it doesn’t look like his tailored jeans are on fire. 

“Uh.” Tanger nods. “Yes. That’s right–that’s what I meant. Because he always keeps telling us he wanted to try but he never did. Sorry that he roped you into it, buddy.”

It feels like Sidney’s entire body is deflating in relief. Geno chuckles, holding Sidney close by his waist. 

“I’m happy to teach him,” he says, then lowers his voice as if sharing a secret, “He really bad at skating. Like newborn giraffe.”

“Oh, is he?” Tanger has the Face–the one Sidney knows is the face he makes when he’s harvesting juicy gossip for the group chat and–oh God, he’s going to tell Flower and just laugh his entire ass off. “That’s too bad. Not gonna win any medals then, huh, Sid?”

“Geno’s working on it with me,” Sidney grits out.

“Well, I won’t keep you,” Tanger says happily, skating backwards. “I’ll text you later. Geno, I’m expecting you and Sidney to come over for dinner next time.”

“Bye, Sidney,” Jake calls out. “I’ll see you at pract–ow, what was that for?” He makes a hurt expression at Tanger, rubbing his arm. “Hey, wait, we’re leaving already? We just got here–”

“I’m sorry about him. Tanger is–Kris is–um–,” Sidney says hurriedly, but Geno’s looking at him no differently. 

“He seems fun,” Geno hums. “You really wait until now to skate? Can skate alone, you know.”

“I–” He swallows. “I didn’t want to do it alone.”

“Well, good thing you have me,” Geno grins, then kisses the corner of Sidney’s mouth again. “Come on, you gonna leave today skating like pro.”

Sidney forgets about the whole encounter until later tonight, when Geno is snoring next to him in bed and his phone flashes bright with a text from Flower that he has to squint a little to read: Sidney, stop catfishing people!!!!! Jk ily but seriously what are you doing. Call me

He goes to the bathroom and calls Flower.

“What’s going on,” Flower demands, in lieu of a hello. 

“I don’t know,” he says, sliding down on the floor. It’s the most honest he’s felt all week. “I really, really don’t know.”
