You're being targeted by disinformation networks that are vastly more effective than you realize. And they're making you more hateful and depressed.
(This essay was originally by u/walkandtalkk and posted to r/GenZ on Reddit two months ago, and I've crossposted here on Tumblr for convenience because it's relevant and well-written.)
TL;DR: You know that Russia and other governments try to manipulate people online. But you almost certainly don't how just how effectively orchestrated influence networks are using social media platforms to make you -- individually-- angry, depressed, and hateful toward each other. Those networks' goal is simple: to cause Americans and other Westerners -- especially young ones -- to give up on social cohesion and to give up on learning the truth, so that Western countries lack the will to stand up to authoritarians and extremists.
And you probably don't realize how well it's working on you.
This is a long post, but I wrote it because this problem is real, and it's much scarier than you think.
How Russian networks fuel racial and gender wars to make Americans fight one another
In September 2018, a video went viral after being posted by In the Now, a social media news channel. It featured a feminist activist pouring bleach on a male subway passenger for manspreading. It got instant attention, with millions of views and wide social media outrage. Reddit users wrote that it had turned them against feminism.
There was one problem: The video was staged. And In the Now, which publicized it, is a subsidiary of RT, formerly Russia Today, the Kremlin TV channel aimed at foreign, English-speaking audiences.
As an MIT study found in 2019, Russia's online influence networks reached 140 million Americans every month -- the majority of U.S. social media users.
Russia began using troll farms a decade ago to incite gender and racial divisions in the United States
In 2013, Yevgeny Prigozhin, a confidante of Vladimir Putin, founded the Internet Research Agency (the IRA) in St. Petersburg. It was the Russian government's first coordinated facility to disrupt U.S. society and politics through social media.
Here's what Prigozhin had to say about the IRA's efforts to disrupt the 2022 election:
"Gentlemen, we interfered, we interfere and we will interfere. Carefully, precisely, surgically and in our own way, as we know how. During our pinpoint operations, we will remove both kidneys and the liver at once."
In 2014, the IRA and other Russian networks began establishing fake U.S. activist groups on social media. By 2015, hundreds of English-speaking young Russians worked at the IRA. Their assignment was to use those false social-media accounts, especially on Facebook and Twitter -- but also on Reddit, Tumblr, 9gag, and other platforms -- to aggressively spread conspiracy theories and mocking, ad hominem arguments that incite American users.
In 2017, U.S. intelligence found that Blacktivist, a Facebook and Twitter group with more followers than the official Black Lives Matter movement, was operated by Russia. Blacktivist regularly attacked America as racist and urged black users to rejected major candidates. On November 2, 2016, just before the 2016 election, Blacktivist's Twitter urged Black Americans: "Choose peace and vote for Jill Stein. Trust me, it's not a wasted vote."
Russia plays both sides -- on gender, race, and religion
The brilliance of the Russian influence campaign is that it convinces Americans to attack each other, worsening both misandry and misogyny, mutual racial hatred, and extreme antisemitism and Islamophobia. In short, it's not just an effort to boost the right wing; it's an effort to radicalize everybody.
Russia uses its trolling networks to aggressively attack men. According to MIT, in 2019, the most popular Black-oriented Facebook page was the charmingly named "My Baby Daddy Aint Shit." It regularly posts memes attacking Black men and government welfare workers. It serves two purposes: Make poor black women hate men, and goad black men into flame wars.
MIT found that My Baby Daddy is run by a large troll network in Eastern Europe likely financed by Russia.
But Russian influence networks are also also aggressively misogynistic and aggressively anti-LGBT.
On January 23, 2017, just after the first Women's March, the New York Times found that the Internet Research Agency began a coordinated attack on the movement. Per the Times:
More than 4,000 miles away, organizations linked to the Russian government had assigned teams to the Women’s March. At desks in bland offices in St. Petersburg, using models derived from advertising and public relations, copywriters were testing out social media messages critical of the Women’s March movement, adopting the personas of fictional Americans.
They posted as Black women critical of white feminism, conservative women who felt excluded, and men who mocked participants as hairy-legged whiners.
But the Russian PR teams realized that one attack worked better than the rest: They accused its co-founder, Arab American Linda Sarsour, of being an antisemite. Over the next 18 months, at least 152 Russian accounts regularly attacked Sarsour. That may not seem like many accounts, but it worked: They drove the Women's March movement into disarray and eventually crippled the organization.
Russia doesn't need a million accounts, or even that many likes or upvotes. It just needs to get enough attention that actual Western users begin amplifying its content.
A former federal prosecutor who investigated the Russian disinformation effort summarized it like this:
It wasn’t exclusively about Trump and Clinton anymore. It was deeper and more sinister and more diffuse in its focus on exploiting divisions within society on any number of different levels.
As the New York Times reported in 2022,
There was a routine: Arriving for a shift, [Russian disinformation] workers would scan news outlets on the ideological fringes, far left and far right, mining for extreme content that they could publish and amplify on the platforms, feeding extreme views into mainstream conversations.
China is joining in with AI
[A couple months ago], the New York Times reported on a new disinformation campaign. "Spamouflage" is an effort by China to divide Americans by combining AI with real images of the United States to exacerbate political and social tensions in the U.S. The goal appears to be to cause Americans to lose hope, by promoting exaggerated stories with fabricated photos about homeless violence and the risk of civil war.
As Ladislav Bittman, a former Czechoslovakian secret police operative, explained about Soviet disinformation, the strategy is not to invent something totally fake. Rather, it is to act like an evil doctor who expertly diagnoses the patient’s vulnerabilities and exploits them, “prolongs his illness and speeds him to an early grave instead of curing him.”
The influence networks are vastly more effective than platforms admit
Russia now runs its most sophisticated online influence efforts through a network called Fabrika. Fabrika's operators have bragged that social media platforms catch only 1% of their fake accounts across YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, and Telegram, and other platforms.
But how effective are these efforts? By 2020, Facebook's most popular pages for Christian and Black American content were run by Eastern European troll farms tied to the Kremlin. And Russia doesn't just target angry Boomers on Facebook. Russian trolls are enormously active on Twitter. And, even, on Reddit.
It's not just false facts
The term "disinformation" undersells the problem. Because much of Russia's social media activity is not trying to spread fake news. Instead, the goal is to divide and conquer by making Western audiences depressed and extreme.
Sometimes, through brigading and trolling. Other times, by posting hyper-negative or extremist posts or opinions about the U.S. the West over and over, until readers assume that's how most people feel. And sometimes, by using trolls to disrupt threads that advance Western unity.
As the RAND think tank explained, the Russian strategy is volume and repetition, from numerous accounts, to overwhelm real social media users and create the appearance that everyone disagrees with, or even hates, them. And it's not just low-quality bots. Per RAND,
Russian propaganda is produced in incredibly large volumes and is broadcast or otherwise distributed via a large number of channels. ... According to a former paid Russian Internet troll, the trolls are on duty 24 hours a day, in 12-hour shifts, and each has a daily quota of 135 posted comments of at least 200 characters.
What this means for you
You are being targeted by a sophisticated PR campaign meant to make you more resentful, bitter, and depressed. It's not just disinformation; it's also real-life human writers and advanced bot networks working hard to shift the conversation to the most negative and divisive topics and opinions.
It's why some topics seem to go from non-issues to constant controversy and discussion, with no clear reason, across social media platforms. And a lot of those trolls are actual, "professional" writers whose job is to sound real.
So what can you do? To quote WarGames: The only winning move is not to play. The reality is that you cannot distinguish disinformation accounts from real social media users. Unless you know whom you're talking to, there is a genuine chance that the post, tweet, or comment you are reading is an attempt to manipulate you -- politically or emotionally.
Here are some thoughts:
Don't accept facts from social media accounts you don't know. Russian, Chinese, and other manipulation efforts are not uniform. Some will make deranged claims, but others will tell half-truths. Or they'll spin facts about a complicated subject, be it the war in Ukraine or loneliness in young men, to give you a warped view of reality and spread division in the West.
Resist groupthink. A key element of manipulate networks is volume. People are naturally inclined to believe statements that have broad support. When a post gets 5,000 upvotes, it's easy to think the crowd is right. But "the crowd" could be fake accounts, and even if they're not, the brilliance of government manipulation campaigns is that they say things people are already predisposed to think. They'll tell conservative audiences something misleading about a Democrat, or make up a lie about Republicans that catches fire on a liberal server or subreddit.
Don't let social media warp your view of society. This is harder than it seems, but you need to accept that the facts -- and the opinions -- you see across social media are not reliable. If you want the news, do what everyone online says not to: look at serious, mainstream media. It is not always right. Sometimes, it screws up. But social media narratives are heavily manipulated by networks whose job is to ensure you are deceived, angry, and divided.
Edited for typos and clarity. (Tumblr-edited for formatting and to note a sourced article is now older than mentioned in the original post. -LV)
P.S. Apparently, this post was removed several hours ago due to a flood of reports. Thank you to the r/GenZ moderators for re-approving it.
Second edit:
This post is not meant to suggest that r/GenZ is uniquely or especially vulnerable, or to suggest that a lot of challenges people discuss here are not real. It's entirely the opposite: Growing loneliness, political polarization, and increasing social division along gender lines is real. The problem is that disinformation and influence networks expertly, and effectively, hijack those conversations and use those real, serious issues to poison the conversation. This post is not about left or right: Everyone is targeted.
(Further Tumblr notes: since this was posted, there have been several more articles detailing recent discoveries of active disinformation/influence and hacking campaigns by Russia and their allies against several countries and their respective elections, and barely touches on the numerous Tumblr blogs discovered to be troll farms/bad faith actors from pre-2016 through today. This is an ongoing and very real problem, and it's nowhere near over.
A quote from NPR article linked above from 2018 that you might find familiar today: "[A] particular hype and hatred for Trump is misleading the people and forcing Blacks to vote Killary. We cannot resort to the lesser of two devils. Then we'd surely be better off without voting AT ALL," a post from the account said.")
#propaganda#psyops#disinformation#US politics#election 2024#us elections#YES we have legitimate criticisms of our politicians and systems#but that makes us EVEN MORE susceptible to radicalization. not immune#no not everyone sharing specific opinions are psyops. but some of them are#and we're more likely to eat it up on all sides if it aligns with our beliefs#the division is the point#sound familiar?#voting#rambles#long post

I am not going to talk about "low morale" because I really don't care, but the tags are extremely wrong.
Source: I spent the last two years in a city in 45 kilometres away from the frontlines (Zaporizhzhia). Air strikes and air defense sound different. While I can't say for sure that there was no time Ukrainian air defense misfired into a residential building ever anywhere, I can guarantee that the most notorious destructions of residential buildings here were all air strikes.
This is what I am direct witness of, but what I saw from destruction of Kharkiw doesn't resemble air defense misfire either. I didn't pay close attention to other cities, but I can believe in situation there being the same.
#it's really funny how i can't voice my opinions irl because they are considered so unpatriotic that are (borderline) illegal#but only is no better either#if you want to be anticommunist on my post - my understanding of the world politics is mostly communist and people irl more or less agree#and the people who have the most nuanced takes are also communists while everyone else tells some fantasy story#there are just clowns in every movement who but into propaganda of any major power#(though it's a little surprising to see such a take from a russian queer - they are usually uncritically pro-ukrainian#(okay i may allow anarchists i am not 100% decided on theoretical foundations)#politics#ukraine#txt

I do think a good chunk of the 'cringey atheist' stereotype did come from the fact that, especially americans, regardless of their actual religious status are just casually christian and refer to things through a religious filter and that isn't seen for how overwhelming/obnoxious/frustrating it is. Its absense, such as when writing a story and things like "oh god" or other casual references are remove or replaced, is seen as notable the same way people find the cast being all women or queer being 'abnormal'.
And I think more people, especially here on tumblr, should take a moment from ragging on some kid being "cringey" saying god doesn't exist or making atheist jump around like dancing monkeys to establish they're one of the good respectful ones before they ever even begin to talk about their own thoughts, and examine why so much content just inserts god into a conversation that had nothing to do with religion like it's the expected norm, the same way they examine the invasiveness of casual heteronormativity.
#this is just cause an ex christian youtuber i otherwise like refers to any extreme emotional experience as a 'religious experience'#as if everyone can agree on it being so#and theres more than a few posts on here that make me wonder why#so many people are incapable of making something 'poetic' or 'great' without invoking religious imagery#even where it had no relevance#atheism#anyways#ive seen uncomfortably similar treatment that aces in particular have received for pointing out amatonormativity in a post#its rare these days though because atheists have long since been thuroughly shamed in american society as being edgy#which like wooow a christian nation that shames every other religion in some way found a way to shame nonreligious too? shocking#actually i get kinda annoyed when i think about it its one of those propaganda that people casually buy into#without examining it at all#youll see atheists acting like dancing monkeys trying to establish theyre not cringe guys its okay#just to talk about how they feel and think#i remember being a young adult and when someone started talking to me with the assumption of god being in the picture#and id get an eye roll like i was being childish not going along with it nevermind they inserted god into the convo in the first place#without question or comment#and i know it wasnt forceful the same way some ex religious folks can get a bit zealous the same way they were about religion#which theres something to eb said for that zealousness being acceptable when christian but not when atheist or another religion#but ive never gone through such a phase my family has been atheist for several generations now and we were taught to respect beliefs#anyways sorry idk why this is on my brain this afternoon i think i saw a post or smth and it reminded me of that youtuber

I sort of like the thought that Zuko and Aang take the Sun Warriors' warning not to tell anyone about the dragons a little more seriously… and they keep it between them. Of course, they trust Sokka, Toph and Katara. Of course they know they wouldn’t tell anyone, but now three people (including Iroh) know the truth about Ran and Shaw. And that’s three too many when you’re trying to keep a secret.
(and there are other people at the temple as well - like Haru, Teo and The Duke - who, while trustworthy, aren’t as close to them as the others, and when it comes to secrets with as much consequence as this one, you can’t afford to take any chances.)
Furthermore, the culture within the Fire Nation since Sozin’s rein has been warped. The culture is not to respect the dragons as the original firebenders, it’s to conquer and kill them. It’s the ultimate proof of your strength as a firebender. All it takes is one mistake before rumour spreads, and people go looking for the ultimate hunt. It’s not something Zuko or Aang can risk.
Whether Katara, Toph and Sokka (and Suki) ever find out the truth is up to you. But post-war, after Zuko returns from a strange, poorly explained trip with a dragon, and eventually develops the ability to use rainbow fire, either the others have some questions about Aang’s knowing look, or they are finally let in on a monumental secret.
#it’s a kids show so i think for that reason it was played for laughs about keeping the dragons a secret is not necessarily a bad choice...#the show does that sometimes where it says something off hand and then leaves me lying face down contemplating ✨the consequences✨ of that#but there are some… implications there about being too loose lipped with the truth in leading up to the end of and immediately post#war fire nation. just because zuko understands the spiritual significance of a dragon it does not mean the rest of his people will. actuall#its more likely that they'd reject zuko's opinion considering that he's basically coming into power and then telling everyone that#they've been lied to their whole lives. the fire nation is drowning in propaganda. for a lot of people this opinion of dragons and#firebending's true nature being violence and destruction is all they know. fire is LIFE but to most people that's an alien concept#and in terms of keeping secrets - it’s not even a matter of trust it’s a matter of too many people knowing#you might not even realised you’ve revealed some incredible information to someone who has the means to spread it or pursue it#so… i think zuko would be hyper aware of this. since he grew up hearing stories about the 'glory' of dragon hunting#and since iroh has also made a concerted effort to keep this information hidden i think it makes sense he’d be very hesitant to let it#get out to the public#aang would agree i think esp if zuko explained the importance of hiding them even from loved ones#ALSO random but it also makes me wonder what the fire nation said about roku in wake of the war#he had a dragon but he didn’t kill it. he didn’t ’conquer’ it#sozin would have had to work his ASS off to reframe history as him being the more… loyal(?) patriotic (?) of the two#did he frame it as roku didn’t have the courage to kill a dragon??? that he lacked the strength of a true firebender?#the avatar works hard but sozin's propaganda machine works harder 🧍♀️#ch: zuko#ch: aang#avatar the last airbender#zuko & aang#jack talks#sun warriors#book 3#what is it with me having a whole separate post in the tags 👁️👄👁️

If you're new to the platform, you may not remember that the year Trump was elected, there were a ton of Russian bots here on Tumblr specifically working to get him elected that were, to quote Tumblr, "engaged in state-sponsored disinformation and propaganda campaigns" and pushing a variety of fake ads and disinformation to help Trump win.
You also may not remember that these Russian sockpuppet accounts specifically encouraged people not to vote or to vote for Jill Stein or another third party because they knew it would lead to a Trump victory.
But, of course, for some mysterious (😒) reason Tumblr couldn't tell anyone they were following or had reblogged one of these disinformation accounts until after the election, when they sent a notice to each person individually letting them know they'd fallen for propaganda. So people didn't realize they'd been duped or that their "friend" was a Russian asset until it was too late.
And no one likes to admit they've been tricked. I get it. Sunk costs are a real jerk.
But when you notice how many of the people pushing a message not to vote or to vote third party are blue checks or how the algorithm on pro-Trump Twitter is favoring them by showing them even when you block the users. How these accounts are always using the same phrases every time. How quickly certain accounts pop up to comment the same things on every post with election keywords. Or how sometimes they don't even bother to switch between their pro-Trump account or their "leftist" account... please just take a moment to remember that this has all happened before and be critical about who, on these platforms owned by conservatives, it benefits most to convince you to vote third party or not vote.
In the words of super grainy Garfield...

#i never really post about politics but I genuinely think some on here forgot or missed this whole scandal#and I have been thinking about it a lot this election for... obvious reasons#the craziest part about this bot thing was Tumblr would send you a message that told you you'd fallen for russian propaganda#and then just NOT tell you which post or account it was#so it was just like someone running by and screaming 'btw you fell for a scam but we're not gonna tell you which one lol'#good times#and by that I mean terrible dystopian times#i'm torn between tagging with all the us election tags so everyone can watch the swarm in real time as an example#and enjoying the peace of not having bots and their marks commenting the same variations of their pre-set expressions over and over#tumblr

taking a film course my final semester just for fun and i get to write my final paper on literally ANYTHING, essentially, and i was going to do it on something insightful, but instead i am going to do it on how music is sex in The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) because i am OBSESSED with it and it makes me happier every time i watch it.
#showed it to a friend last night who ALSO loved it#best response i have gotten to it so far which made me very happy#he was literally CACKLING at the end#it’s just soooooooo good#i recommend it to everyone who’s willing to just have the wildest time for 90 minutes#i’ve been wanting to make an edit of the goofiest parts of it out of context for over a year now… i need to actually do that#i NEED to spread my propaganda the people NEED to see this shit#but yeah - my professor’s about to think i’m fucking insane lmaooooo#i have legitimate points to make - i actually think i can make a really good paper out of this#but it’s still just REALLY funny to me#yes i AM a STEM major taking this course because i’m obsessed with some random 30s films#and want to rave about them for college credit#AND WHAT OF IT???????#this isn’t happening until May… i’m getting ahead of myself#but i just decided on that paper topic last night and i’m like :)))))))))))

Being able to say "this is fucking stupid" and move on from something on the internet has been instrumental, but oh my god it's still such a pain in the ass to think about it nonstop for the next 20 minutes
#Vent tw#I kind of don't want to say what this was about because It's A Show That People Get Death Threats Over#And frankly I already feel guilty about liking it even though I'm highly critical (HIGHLY CRITICAL.) of it#But like oh my actual fucking god#YES some shows should not be watched in the first place. Some of them undeniably suck!! What the creators have done is bad!!#Shit like AoT is propaganda and South Park and Family Guy reduce your capacity for kindness. So do similar things.#But we also A) can't judge everyone who watches them because there ARE good apples#And B) FICTIVES FROM DOGSHIT SOURCES ARE FINE PEOPLE 90% OF THE TIME!!!!!! **SHUT UP!!!!!!!**#One side of this argument needs to get some fucking media literacy and criticality#And the other side need to stop sucking Viv's dick and get their proshipper heads out of their proshipper asses.

being a pretentious fuck is embarassing sometimes. bc if someone asks me what video games i play im like "yeah i only play story based indie games about depression and guilt" like omfg shut UP
#i should play a game involving shooting or cars#having a great taste in story based indie games is so hard actually. im so sexy and everyone wants me#i do think a lot of it is my pretentious english double major tendencies like a lot of these games ARE just literature u can interact with#something like omori is actually such a well written narrative like some of the lines and scenes execution scenes still get me#LIKE THE THEMES AND MOTIFS GOT TO ME#also undertale is kinda ugly. but god is the writing so tight... asriel boss battle literally is my favorite final boss in any game IDC!!!!#like i rly think undertale is so brilliant bc the visuals aren't SPECTACULAR and that's not temmie's fault that's toby's for rejecting#the good designs because they'd be 'too good' but so many hard hitting scenes are just. dialogue. and descriptions. and music.#it's actually insane how well written it is that you don't see anything happening but someone talks about it and you cry#rn im playing isat... deserves a place on this list#im also playing mother 3 which is suprirsingly like... the most radical game i've played? i mean that it's genuinely anticapitalist?#love to see communist propaganda and drag queens in video games

Give me the strength to not get into a fight with my unis jewish society over instagram.
#full of zionists. not even worth arguing with cos so many of them refuse to believe the country theyre from might suck#and the others are british but just either baked in the propaganda or willing to sit with what everyone else says and not argue#if u were gonna have a 'dont argue about israel' policy it should go both ways.#i havent been to any of their events in months and ngl i may just not even get membership next year#but they keep posting shit on their insta and they exclusively just run the ujs party line (which is zionist)#the one today wasnt even so bad but im still. ugh. why is the fucking society for Jewish students a political entity istg.#maybe I'll get more involved in palestine solidarity soc at some point.

I always found Captain America: Civil War very side-eye worthy because the plot is kicked off by a non-government-affiliated-but-still-American-based militarized organization going into a foreign country and recklessly getting civilians killed trying to obtain a weapon of mass destruction, and then when foreign countries/ the UN demand accountability Steve just says "the safest hands are still our own" and the movie + fandom treats him like he's correct for this. Idk, knowing that the MCU collaborates with the US military industrial complex just makes the entire Team Cap side seem like deliberate propaganda than just an unintended implication.
#this isnt what i usually post but im at a family reunion and theyre playing Civil War in the background and i have thoughts to rant#a lot of people try to argue that “oh its because of Steve's experience with HYDRA infiltrating the government”#but even that was a decision the US military approved of bc it made some other entity the problem rather than them#idk the MCU's politics are just all over the place#and i wish people would realize how much Team Cap is light propaganda even if they agree with him within the context of the movie#sorry Filipino Perspective™ here but the fact that everyone is so dismissive of those third world countries' concerns grinds my gears#not the first time this has happened mind you (and Wanda was once again at the forefront of the disaster but if i criticized how messy her#character was written then we will be here all day. thats another post entirely)#marvel#mcu#my post
