I don't get why we're pretending that (DC/superhero) comics are any different in that regard than literally any other form of media, though.

When I recommend "Bojack Horseman" to people, I tell them the first season kinda drags and that the whole "talking animals thing" might get a second to get used to if they don't usually watch cartoons but that it's worth it because it's a genuinely amazing show.

A lot of "9-1-1" fans don't like the first season of that show, either.

Half of the things coming out of "Star Wars" in my lifetime have apparently sucked but people still like and recommend Star Wars, even the parts other people hate.

There's lots of books people tell you will "get better" as the series goes on.

This isn't a uniquely comics problem and I don't understand why we're talking about this like it is.

You will like some comics that other people hate and you'll hate some comics that other people love and that's just. Normal.

That's how media consumption works.

That's why I can hate "The Legend of Korra", and I do hate that show, while it has a thriving fandom who love and appreciate it for what it is.

As for the gatekeeping ... yeah?

How is "If you want to participate in the DC Comics fandom, you should probably read DC Comics" somehow a controversial statement?

When I was active in the ATLA fandom, I kind of expected you* to have watched ATLA, y'know, the original cartoon, not the movie that doesn't exist, not just fanfiction, the show.

When I was active in the Twilight fandom, tons of people fucking hated the source material, at least in retrospect, but they had still read it.

It's fine if you've just watched "Teen Titans" or "Gotham" or "My Adventures with Superman" but they're adaptations of a thing that should be treated as such and the problem comes in when people who have only engaged with those adaptations come into spaces that explictly discuss and engage with the comics, feeling like they're experts on something they've never even looked at.

The point of my original post was not about people who think stuff like "I'm not in the right headspace to find a comic I enjoy" or "I enjoy *insert adaptation* and that's enough for me", it's explicitly about people who talk about comics like they're any more difficult to open than literally any other book or a TV show or a movie. Or worse, the people who talk about reading 100k fanfics with shaky at best characaterisation and plot like it's easier or takes less effort than just picking up a comic book.

If you don't like or aren't interested in DC Comics, you don't like or are interested DC Comics. That's whatever.

But if you then choose to still engage in discussions and the creation of fanworks of explicitly the comics and get indignant at people who do like those comics being annoyed at your bad representation or disparagement of their favourite characters and stories, if you'd rather read a bunch of mid fanfics than one mid comic while ragging on comics in general despite the fact that you've only ever opened, like, one, if that, then yes, I think you're a little bit of a loser.

people who say it's difficult to get into comics are weak and won't survive the winter. you pick a random comic, google "read online free" and then you read a hundred issues of a run you'll like well enough but realize really sucks like two years later.

While I find “if not friend why friend-shaped” about cute but dangerous animals to be a fun meme, I increasingly react with knee-jerk negativity to “if evil why hot” because while it’s not that serious when applied to fiction there is an extremely worrying real trend of people who think of themselves as progressive and enlightened who equate physical appearance to morality.

i’m just gonna say it i love how kaos handled orpheus and eurydice. i really did, im a huge greek mythology nerd and that story has always been about the refusal to give someone up even when you should, its not a love story its a story about grief. and i just- ah they did something really cool there didn’t they? i’m gonna rewatch the season and like properly form my opinions but i really like it.
