have u ever seen a male character be called a slut, bitch, whore, etc for having a crush on one of the female characters?? do you often see people say they want to slit his throat or beat him with a bat because hes so annoying for having a crush on her? have you ever read a lesbian ship fic where the male protagonist from the source material calls the two main girls the f slur, stomps his feet, and screams that the other girl is stealing his crush away, because hes so jealous and apparently extremely openly homophobic ??? is he ever made into a literal villain, with every bit of his actual personality disregarded in favor of keeping him away from the girl? and then the fic ends with everyone in the vicinity realizing he was just a bitch all along, his only value being his looks, everyone giggles at him, and he gets shunned and is now universally hated?

Her final moments tore at me; the stone-cold terror and certainty underlying the hysteria in her ramblings about Barnabas, followed by the sinking despair and yawning regret about Cid—her two most important people, who both failed her, as she in her way failed herself.

All her pride and self-deception giving way right before the end.

She knew. She knew. The instant she stopped lying to herself it was obvious she always saw Barnabas and Cid clearly. That one would discard her immediately upon her loss of value she did not doubt, that the other only ever wanted good things for her, in spite of her perception of being abandoned by him, was the final truth she admitted only upon losing everything.

Benna is the character Cid and I most wanted to save. The game never even gave us the opportunity, Benna herself didn't give us the opportunity, but I refuse to believe she is slave to her fate. She's wounded and difficult but so clever and stubborn and her spirit remains mad fierce through it all. There must be an AU where she can be saved; there must be an AU where she decides to save herself, where she consents to be saved. Because I love her, I cannot help but think this, with more foolish hope than rational belief; and that makes me wonder how many years Cid thought this too.

Maybe he, like me, could never truly fully give up on saving her—I say, enraged and possessed, to the damned word document that will make it happen.

i think the reason oliver is such a compelling character - or at least to me, he is - is because in the end…he wins! he gets what he wants and comes out on top.

in this modern world everyone is a bit of an oliver. crippling social anxiety, awkward, booksmart, and later in the film mostly queer audiences STILL find themselves relating to oliver’s struggle of how to express a desire that is so unconventional, so disturbing, so queer. normally in shows like this - shows with stunning rich people and their stunning social skills - the social outcast remains a social outcast. the queercoded character does not get their happy ending and remains the perpetual butt of the joke.

but in saltburn? saltburn almost has a gone girl sort of ending in the way the supposed villain gets what they want in the end, and we’re rooting for them! we see a mostly unexplored perspective in cinema - the perspective of the outsider, of the freak, and we see just how awful these people - beautiful shiny upper class folk - are, and then this outsider, who has been patronised and placed on a pedestal and humiliated, gets his revenge and gets everything he desired in the end. and in a world where queer, different characters are killed off or side lined or made fun off for whom or what they desire, oliver stands out, because he gets what he desires and he makes the audience root for him while he’s doing it.
