With the news just of JKs series, which seems to be the film split from the trailer, just with extras, am I wrong to pray that we donât get a documentary for Muse?
I just have this really bad feeling that Jimin would say something more unhinged than he did during the Bangtan bombs we got and the interviews with p dogg, when he said he couldnât remember the last time he had a crush, that he was alone, and he couldnât relate to the love songs. That telling the producers what he wanted for Who was like them reading his diary, basically that whole segment is sus, and technically debunked Jikook. I can imagine him saying heâs never been in love etc. I just know he would do that. Weâve got Jimin choosing Who, about not having love, and JK chooses all songs about being with the one you love, so I wasnât worried about him saying anything, just Jimin.
I am wrong to feel this way? I pray every night for it not to happen
Hi Anon!
First I need to tell you this before I go further on explaining why MUSE, the album as a whole does nothing to debunk Jikook:
As much as I love celebrating Jikook's bond and relationship I'm not someone who has any kind of expectations from both Jimin and Jungkook. I won't demand them to behave a certain way so that I get the confirmation my ship needs. Having such kind of expectations is not ony wrong but also unfair to them.
Anon, I hope I don't sound condescending which is not my intention at all. I'm just saying this in your best interest. I hope you'll take it in the right spirit.
Now I'll share my views on why MUSE does not debunk Jikook.
MUSE is a conceptual album as opposed to FACE which was autobiographical. As stated by Jimin and the producers they were following a storyline for MUSE. Also, when it came to MUSE Jimin had so much to share, ideas to give and discuss while for FACE we didnt get that, did we? Since FACE was about his own life and the struggles he went through, he was hesitant and holding back not letting us know much about it. Which was not surprising knowing how serious he is about his personal life.
And something which I think you're forgetting is that Jimin is an artist. An artist who will experiment with his work and explore diverse genres in order to bring to the table different stories for the fans. Stories which fans also can relate to. Stories which aren't about his personal life and experiences. His work is not always going to be solely focused on his personal life. So, try to separate his work life from his personal life.
Also, taking into consideration his situation (his country, the industry he works in) its highly unlikely for him to say "Hey! Jungkook is my bf. We have been in love for a long time now". That's not gonna happen anytime in the near future. So, what we will be getting instead is "I'm single for as long as I can remember. I don't even know how having a crush feels like".
This is the exact reason why "Letter" gets passed off as a fan song in the general fandom. Cause Jimin is not in a position to say "Letter" is for Jungkook. That's a sad reality. But its for their own safety and well being. Which provides them a cover, a protection. The same cover cause of which they were able to enlist together. Which in my opinion is the most important for them, I mean being able to stay together rather than risk everything and expose themselves.
However Jimin did provide a few hints here and there for those who are willing to listen.
And an even BIGGER HINT with this one here:
The billboard falling at the same time Jimin goes "Who's my heart waiting for". Someone whose facial structure is not that of a woman but of a man. A man with doe eyes. A man who stole his heart all those years ago. A man with whom he's happy and very obviously in love.
Have a nice day Anon!

Todays rip: 29/04/2024
slider dank version
Season 8 Featured on: The Joke-Explainer 7000âą's Highest Quality Rips: Sunrise
Ripped by Mitchell
youtube
So, it's been more than a week since it happened: the glorious 4/20 event of SiIvaGunner Season 8. Are we all in agreement that it was fucking amazing?
Look, I love the olden internet days and all what Unregistered Hypercam 2 brought as much as anyone else, those anthems of YouTube's earliest beginnings as heard in rips like Unregistered CyberSpace 4-5: Arrow of 2009 are well worth remembering - but the truth is, that I was just a bit too young to get to experience it all in a way that I can tangibly recall. My age was still in the single digits during the Dreamscape's reign - but in contrast, I remember every little bit of how MLG and Montage Parodies rose in popularity, and how they eventually fell out of style. And like I said back in we are number one but with outdated memes over it, it was as if they died out right as SiIvaGunner itself was taking off, like the torch was being passed from one to the other. All these years later, I presume even the SiIvaGunner team themselves were getting nostalgic for the sheer chaos of it all - and so, the age of MLG was celebrated for a day straight on the 20th of April, 2024.
It was a fantastic day across the board, and it was really hard to pick just one rip from it to feature on here. It featured everything from the typical Snoop Dogg rips a la Ganja Man 9: Hash Blunt Hash (Shorty's Stage), to genuinely excellent melodyswaps using songs featured in MLG parodies, to rips not even prominently featuring music, spoofing MLG edits more directly in a genuinely super nostalgic way. In the end, I had to go with slider dank version, just for it being the most whollistic rip choice possible - a cacophany of noise using all corners of MLG, and in said noisiness perfectly encapsulating the ""appeal"" montage parodies had back during their prime. That, and just like with slideless, I feel like there's just something special about Slider rips in particular - they've been around for so long, posted with both such frequency and such enduring quality, that a meme getting Slider'd feels as if its being inaugurated into the SiIvaGunner Hall of Fame. Seeing my beloved MLG get that very same treatment felt like a prophecy come true, a story in the making since the very beginning of SiIvaGunner, realized at last.
But, okay - what exactly IS slider dank version? It was maybe a bit wrong of me to describe it as just noise, because it does have a throughline carrying its melody from start to finish - Smoke Weed Everyday, that is. This isn't a meme medley that changes sources with every half measure of the song a la Memey Hell - rather, other MLG-related sources instead play like accents onto the base melody, little flourishes that make the rip feel more complete. The rip would've been a great listen with JUST the main melody edits, the pitchshifting on Snoop's vocals are fantastic as-is, but each little flourish just adds more than the last. I think a big reason why it works so well is because of how Slider as a track is composed of a lot of call-and-response segments: The melody plays one segment of four or five notes in a steady rhythm followed by a pause, and within said pause the music leaves just enough room for a different melody cue to "respond" to the lead melody. My favorite example of how that's used in slider dank version in particular has to be the airhorns at 0:25 - Snoop's pitch-shifted vocals are met with the infamous airhorn sample which is ALSO pitch-shifted into the aforementioned response melody, and the two sources keep playing off one another for the rest of the segment.
All your other, uh, "MLG Favorites" are here and accounted for as well, I love the hitmarker sounds as the melody starts up at the very beginning, and how the responses before the airhorn segment are just small audio clips like "NICE MEME", "Mom get the camera" and more - it lets the rip add in just about every part of MLG possible incredibly seamlessly. Perhaps most seamlessly is when Slider's melody changes midway through to a slightly less upbeat segment, as it does in the original track, only here being paired with Enya's Only Time - a song you may not recognize by name, but one that was used CONSTANTLY for shitposts about characters dying in MLG compilations, the theme song of all "RIP in Pepperonis" and "liek if u cri evrytim :(" comments all over the internet. And hey, Semi-Charmed All Star - All Star itself even makes it into the rip, taking over Snoop's lead melody duty toward the end of the rip before it loops, along with everyone's favorite Darude Sandstorm. The list goes on - you're surely getting how much fun of a listen this rip is by this point, right?
And like, I know MLG stuff isn't for everyone - there's a reason it all died out, and I'm sure many viewed this event as to be taken purely ironically. But shit, I dunno, sometimes loud DOES equal funny - and though my perspective may be tinted by nostalgia, Montage Parodies are undeniably a part of internet history, a brief but nonetheless HUGE part of online culture, and one that we need to acknowledge happened no matter its obnoxiousness. They weren't all funny, sure - but rips like slider dank version don't feel like they're made to remind us of how terrible things were, but rather how much fun they all COULD be when done right. Not that SiIvaGunner is spearheading an MLG revival per se - but the entire event gave me a ton of nostalgia for something I only recently realized that I was missing. Nice meme indeed, Mitchell - and I suppose that with THIS. IS. SOLEANNA., we've now come full circle on your rips, in paying tribute to all corners of the internet's shitposting history.

Eminem's Houdini
Eminem's newest track Houdini, the first from his new and highly speculated LAST album "The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grùce)" has made waves in both the rap scene and his personal career. The song has landed iTunes No. 1 in over 17 countries, debuted at #3 on Global Spotify Charts with 7.85 M streams and at #4 on US Charts with over 2.97 M streams. This is Eminem's biggest success in one-day streams and certaintly left listeners anxious for the album in its entirety set to release this summer.
However, as with most Eminem songs since his return from hiatus in 2009, there is of course a deeper meaning. Music videos are often overlooked in the days of streaming services both by listeners and artists themselves - but the Houdini music video currently sitting at 22 million views is vital to understanding the real message.
Of course, it's no secret that the Eminem we know of today has had several transformations over the past 30 years with some even identifying these changes as his "eras". Still, whether you think of him as Slim Shady, Eminem, or simply Marshall Mathers, you know that he has always taken his music game to the next level - and Houdini is certainly NOT an outlier.
The music video opens with Eminem in a very Batman-esque bedroom receiving a video call from none other than Dr. Dre himself (dressed as a rather convincing Professor X) while a sample of Without Me plays in the background. A portal from 2002 has been opened and Slim Shady, blond buzzcut intact, has stepped into the ultra-modern - and hypersensitive - world of 2024. Eminem (operating as the superhero Rap Boy) immediately springs into action. The video then cuts to the rapid-fire spread of the news, comic book-style text bubbles appearing over faces both unrecognizable and VERY familiar with Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, and even the Pope all asking the very same question. "Guess who's back?"
We then see both Eminem and Slim Shady next to each other and while it's nice to see that Eminem has aged well (seriously the blond buzzcut is all he needed. Who is his plastic surgeon??) it's very clear this is not a welcome reunion. This video has it all - the sampling of many nostalgic songs of his own and of course Steve Miller Band's Abracadabra, Dre and Eminem cruising in a yellow Lambo (still donning their superhero garb), and 2002 Eminem wreaking havoc in 2024 in an attempt to cancel the modern Eminem. It's well known that Eminem, both past and present, takes delight in a little shock factor and has always thought that society was too sensitive. However, throughout both battles (one in the superhero universe on a city rooftop and one taking place in a liminal space) one thing is very clear - Eminem has changed.
The video climaxes when Eminem (2024) and Slim Shady (2002) both land a punch and seemingly fuse and create a new monster. Eminem returns to the Lambo with his facial hair well intact and a new blond cut as well. We see a cameo from Pete Davidson when the merged Eminems get too out of hand for Dre to handle and even from his very own kids. While this video holds the level of cinematography required to make a splash in 2024 and the Eminem brand humor we've grown to love, it also contemplates a deeper question - How do you deal with problematic behaviors from your past? There's a lot to be said for the behavior of Marshall Mathers throughout his career and I truly think the media has done its due diligence. Still, this video makes it clear you can't outrun your past. There will always be someone (or in Eminem's case, thousands) waiting in the wings to bring it back to light. In an age where no one is safe from their past actions, no matter how much time has passed, there is no escaping - there is only reconciliation. At the end of the video, we see the visualization of what every person who has a toxic past has to go through to heal. You can't destroy who you used to be. You have to learn acceptance and build upon your past. Eminem is no stranger to this, having recently celebrated 16 years of sobriety, and he's certainly no stranger to having his past thrown in his face. He does what he's always done - says "Fuck you" to anyone and anything who stands in his way. At the end of the day, Eminem's existence is still widely controversial but trust me when I say that whether this is his last album or not he has already broken his own records and will continue to do so because of his faith in himself and what he's built. There's nothing harder than letting go of the past (except for maybe watching 2024 Eminem try to keep up with 2002 Slim Shady's moves - turns out not even Eminem is excluded from aging knees).
Love him or hate him, Eminem has proven that he's not playing games. His use of modern technology mixed with his never-ending lyrical genius will leave a significant portion of the world begging for more every time. All I can hope for is a farewell tour when it finally does come to a halt.

Another thing I'd like to clear up concerning Dutch. Clearing up the identity of his style of attire.
Understanding his appearance. Now people have described Dutch as having drip and yes indeed he does have drip. LOL
The but the thing about that is that they have Associated his attire with that of the upper Entourage of the society that we all know he's against. And that's the thing I need to correct people on. It's because they associate his look with being up there with the type of people of Leviticus Cornwall that's what I got out of what they said. Or somebody of higher stature. Like Angelo Bronte we see what his attire look like.
But that isn't the case at all Dutch dress like a bad boy with swag. When you look at Dutch think of the bad boys who are in the hood that know how to dress and put on an impressive look.
What is the one thing about bad boys that good girls like about them? Its the way they dress! They dress with swag. When you look at them they look like they smell like Cool Waters or old spice. Or some other fancy Cologne that bad boys like to rock.
Rather it be good boy or bad boy not every man knows how to put on a good look . Not every man is colorful and creative when it comes to his appearance. Look at all the money Angelo Bronte have and there was nothing appealing about him. Look at Leviticus Cornwall one of the richest man but couldn't put on a look. Dutch is an outlaw but has the look that could make a woman that probably usually isn't attracted to his type he could probably talk her out of her panties. That's what we call bad boy swag.
Dutch don't dress like the higher ups that he's against they wouldn't be caught dead in the attire he wears because they think it's beneath them. But yet he looks well put together than they do.
The other two pictures I have posted next to Dutch was to use as an example. And you know I'm definitely going to have to put Tupac up there as a comparison. Simply because Tupac was in fact a modern day outlaw.
Dutch dress like the bad boy he is he's a bad boy with Style no different than the modern day Outlaws we see walking around.
Which I always started was funny how people tried to associate his attire with the higher ups.
Men like Angelo Bronte and Leviticus Cornwall got all that money but when you look at their attire comparison to Dutch you can't compare their attire to his. But you can compare it to bill gates. You see where I'm going? That's my point some of the richest men in the world don't have no real fashion sense and don't have flavor. The only thing that get women calling is their money. But men like Tupac men like Snoop Dogg and men like Dutch who can put a look together we'll have a woman sniffing LOL. As much crap people give about Jay Z's face he can pull women because of how he carries himself. And he got money. And before he was making it big he was still getting women because it was the way he carried himself. No one is checking for a Leviticus Cornwall over a Dutch van der Linde.
Look at how Dutch was able to pull Molly o'shea. And she was from high society. My point proven LOL đ đ

Coachella has entered its flop era, are influencers really to blame? (msn.com)
Coachella, the music festival that has gone viral every year for the past decade, may have just entered its flop era as tickets to the two-weekend event experienced a decline in demand this year. According to SFGate, the festival hasn't seen ticket sales this slow since 10 years ago.Â
The California-based music festival, which this year features artists such as Doja Cat, Ice Spice, Tyler, the Creator and Lana Del Ray, is famous for selling out tickets within minutes, hours, or at the maximum, a few days. Coachella tickets run for $499 to $599 for general admission and $1,069 to $1,269 for VIP.
The Lovers & Friends festival in Las Vegas, which is set to take place on May 4 this year, sold out within an hour after tickets first went on sale. The music festival has a line-up that features artists such as Janet Jackson, Usher, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg, Backstreet Boys, etc. The festivalâs tickets also started at around $325 for general admission and $695 for VIP.

David Bowie - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars
This was the dawning of a new age of glam rock. It's spacey like much of the glam scene, but it brought a rock n roll edge that would go on to be a major influence in the development of punk. Ziggy Stardust is supposedly a concept album about a bisexual alien rock star sent to earth to avert an energy crisis, but let's be real that concept only exists in like four songs on the album and even then only loosely. No this is really just an album about creating a moody and weird rock and roll drama filled with jangly guitars, dissonant chords, and a weird sense of desperation that is hard to put my finger on.
Talking Heads - Remain In Light
Remain In Light is a complex labyrinth of looping polyrhythmic grooves equally inspired by punk and new wave as it was from Fela Kuti. This is the album that truly brings the strengths of every member of the band to the forefront. Chris Frantz's funk/punk hybrid drumming is challenged to incorporate complex rhythmic elements from African drumming. Tina Weymouth's looping bass lines wind up holding the entire album together. Jerry Harrison on keys and guitar wind up filling in all the empty spaces in the soundscape. And singer David Byrne delivers cryptic stream of consciousness lyrics. Remain In Light, like their last couple albums, was produced by Brian Eno, and Eno's touch is definitely felt. The production is tight, but well textured. Odd noises are brought further into the foreground and vocals are allowed to sit further back than most bands would allow. Remain In Light is a must listen album.
Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde
It must be said, Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 is a bad and stupid song. Yes I 'get it' haha see he says stoned like weed but he means like biblically đ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł. Oh it's so fucking clever kill me. The second that song is over this instantly becomes one of the best Dylan albums by a huge margin. The stretch of songs from Visions Of Johanna to Most Likely You'll Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine) is an amazing run of 10/10 songs. And the closer, Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands is probably my second favorite Dylan closer after Desolation Row. The tightrope act of balancing the folk and rock sides of his style is performed incredibly.
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
The Chrinic is not a Dre solo album, it's a sampler of all the talent he has collected for his new record label. In fact Snoop probably shares as many verses as Dre does on here. It's an incredibly confident move and all the original Death Row inmates are here. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Lady Of Rage, Warren G, RBX, Kurupt, Nate Dogg, it's an incredible cast. And it's all topped off with new and innovative production that utilizes fewer samples, but deploys then with precision. The gratuitous Parliament-Funkadelic sampling would become standard for hip hop going forward, with The Chronic G-Funk was officially established.
Michael Jackson - Off The Wall
This was Michael Jackson's fifth album, but it really was his debut as an adult musician. The cutesy baby faced member of the Jackson Five was now a certified pop star who could compete on his own merits. The disco hits Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough and Rock With Me as well as the ballad She's Out Of My Life lay the groundwork for Jackson's most fertile creative period. Other than that the album is quite good but does pale in comparison to his 80s output.
The Beatles - Rubber Soul
This was the first Beatles album where it felt like they actually wanted to be taken seriously as artists. Rubber Soul leans into a more folk rock sound that strongly distinguishes this album from its rock and roll predecessors. The expanded instrumentation, including their first use of sitar on Norwegian Wood, is a welcome inclusion. The fab four have fully embraced fuzzy guitars. Also of note is the very surreal attitude towards women on here. Like what the fuck is going on in Norwegian Wood and Run For Your Life? Rock music isn't kind to women, but this is just some psycho shit. I love it.
Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
Innervisions is the real start to a more introspective, witty, and socially conscious Stevie Wonder. There are no more sappy love songs and instead politically minded songs like Living For The City or spiritually hopeful songs like Higher Ground are the bread and butter of this record. What Innervisions does do is take the synth bass that was used on Talking Book and ramp it's usage up. The Moog bass gets more usage as the the clarinet and electric piano. Wonder's energy is extremely infectious, it's no surprise that Innervisions spawned four massive hits that all still see play on classic rock radio.
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
It is very clear that Amy Winehouse could have gone all the way for period accurate recreation of early 60s Doo wop and girl groups had she wanted to. Thankfully she was better than that. The way she blends those classic styles with their modern equivalents beautifully illuminates the evolutionary path of soul and R&B music. Winehouse is backed up by the legendary Dap-Kings which adds to the authentic retro feel, but the lyricism absolutely trends more towards a modern style (I don't think Rehab would have flown in the early 60s). All in all Back To Black is a shockingly unique yet recognizable album that can only be the result of a unique musical vision.
Beyoncé - Lemonade
This album made a huge splash when it came out. It was dropped without any warning and overnight white girls were writing think pieces about the state of black America. The album's main topic is how her husband Jay-Z had been cheating on her, but she takes the simple theme os heartbreak and betrayal and evaluates it through the lens of how the legacy of American slavery has had ripple effects on black masculinity, femininity and relationships. I'll stop there lest this becomes another white girl think piece about Lemonade. Underneath the themes and stuff is one of Beyoncé's most dynamic albums. It is not at all contained to just R&B and delves into rock frequently and Daddy Lessons is straight up a country rock song. I'm not even close to the first person to sing the praises of this album but you're gonna have to hear it again because Lemonade is perfect.
Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
In many ways Kind Of Blue resembles other post bop albums. But under the surface something incredibly innovative is happening. You see rather than a chord progression to set the key and then a bunch of solos there is... Wait do you guys know about musical modes? Oh. Uh. This is gonna be hard to explain then. Just trust me that the underlying structure of these songs provides the performers with much more tonal freedom than in other forms of jazz without losing the sense of harmonic center. If you are intrigued Google modal jazz at your own risk. Now the performers themselves are some of the best of the best. Miles himself on trumpet, Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane on alto and tenor sax respectively, Bill Evans on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Each one of these performers is a legend, each one likely to be the biggest name in any other band. And they explore the freedom that the moral form allows them to craft some of the finest solos in the history of jazz. And it's kinda catchy too. I already have the refrain from So What stuck in my head. Somehow one of the most experimental albums also became one of the best selling jazz albums of all time.

Day 278: Thursday October 5, 2023 - "Mornings with William"
Now that we've made the adjustment from weekends to weekday Daddy duty, I have a special responsibility of getting this guy up and to school. After whatever the chaos of September was, William is back to a really good sleep routine again, regularly sleeping in now until about 630-7am. Oh what a difference those 60-90 minutes more of sleep in the morning make, at least on the psyche. But he still wakes up rearing to go, and has lots of opinions on how he wants to start his morning with the first 90 minutes of the day. I've been starting my work day at 7am too, so there is the occassional work call that he has to take care of himself for but I know the tricks for what will keep him entertained for at least 15-20 miniutes. I make the coffee, I make his lunch, I make his breakfast. We're building routines for the morning to go as smoothly as the night and I am figuring out those best steps, settling into this knowing this is going to be long term now. I enjoy it all best I can, and find gratitude when hes let me stay in bed until I am ready. He takes care of potty all by himself, no accidents and does everything he needs to do so that at 8:20am when I am throwing his clothes on and brushing his hair, he is on board. I try to start his day off well - positive, easy, helpful, nurturing. Set him up for success and a good day. The real champ in all of this effort, is him. He lets this thing work with mama being gone, and working with me and trusting me. I love him for it. Being the morning parent- the school parent, is the next role I am growing into and I know that how this feels and works will set a tone for so many years, just like bedtime. It will be a routine he remembers. Important, oh so important to get it right. And its something I am working on each and every morning on our own.
Song: Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa - Young, Wild and Free ft. Bruno Mars
Quote: "Either peace or happiness, let it enfold you. When I was a young man I felt these things were dumb, unsophisticated. I had bad blood, a twisted mind, a precarious upbringing. I was hard as granite, I leered at the sun. I trusted no man and especially no woman... I challenged everything, was continually being evicted, jailed, in and out of fights, in and out of my mind... Peace and happiness to me were signs of inferiority, tenants of the weak, an addled mind. But as I went on...it gradually began to occur to me that I wasn't different from the others, I was the same... Everybody was nudging, inching, cheating for some insignificant advantage, the lie was the weapon and the plot was empty... Cautiously, I allowed myself to feel good at times. I found moments of peace in cheap rooms just staring at the knobs of some dresser or listening to the rain in the dark. The less I needed the better I felt... I re-formulated. I don't know when, date, time, all that but the change occured. Something in me relaxed, smoothed out. I no longer had to prove that I was a man, I didnât have to prove anything. I began to see things: coffee cups lined up behind a counter in a cafe. Or a dog walking along a sidewalk. Or the way the mouse on my dresser top stopped there with its body, its ears, its nose, it was fixed, a bit of life caught within itself and its eyes looked at me and they were beautiful. Then...it was gone. I began to feel good, I began to feel good in the worst situations and there were plenty of those... I welcomed shots of peace, tattered shards of happiness... And finally I discovered real feelings of others, unheralded, like lately, like this morning, as I was leaving for the track, I saw my wife in bed, just the shape of her head there...so still, I ached for her life, just being there under the covers. I kissed her in the forehead, got down the stairway, got outside, got into my marvelous car, fixed the seatbelt, backed out the drive. Feeling warm to the fingertips, down to my foot on the gas pedal, I entered the world once more, drove down the hill past the houses full and empty of people, I saw the mailman, honked, he waved back at me." ~Charles Bukowski

Album Review of the Week: Katy Perry - Teenage Dream (2010; reissued 2012)
In 2010, Katy Perry entered the new decade ready to prove to the world that she was here to stay with the absolute opposite of a sophomore slump. Teenage Dream was a cultural reset, becoming one of the few albums in history to spawn multiple chart-topping hits.
The album's title track, opener, and one of those smash hits - Teenage Dream - almost sounds boring more than 10 years on but that is only because it set the standard for pop hits to come. It is one of those pop songs that sound simple but in that simplicity it becomes easy for more people to relate and enjoy, the recipe for a huge hit! I really enjoy the background electric guitars. They provide a really great base for all of the instrumentals going on and propels the track forward through its melodies in a satisfying way. It is also very easy for almost anyone to sing along with!
Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) allows Katy to bring out her quirky side with silly concepts and lyrics. This track has a scratchy synth all throughout the chorus that is really fun to listen closely in order to keep track of its travels. This is a great party song, very bouncy and fun to move along to!
California Gurls is my favorite song on the album! I remember when this came out, I had it loaded onto my blue iPod Nano and listened to it when walking into school every day that spring. I love how it is energetic without being in your face. The beats are there but there is still a summer chill about it. I don't listen to Snoop Dogg's discography, but I love when he is featured with my pop girlies! His voice pairs with a pop beat very well. This song always makes me think of the purple Polly Pocket Jeep that I had back in 2000. A fantastic lead single!
Out of all the smash singles, Firework is probably the most iconic. Name a better opening line than "do you ever feel like a plastic bag?" This one reminds me of driving to college when I freshly bought it off of iTunes. That's the thing about this album, it was so significant that I remember where I was when I first heard each single! Every pop superstar needs that signature anthem and Katy definitely found it in this song - it is so much fun to sing along to and even if the lyrics are extremely cheesy, it will still pump you up!
After a jam packed start, we get some non-single tracks. Peacock is quite the curious choice to follow Firework, but here we are! For some reason, this one always makes me think of Chat Roulette - I never used it enough to get any saucy surprises but you hear stories. I am not a huge fan of the lyrics, but it has fantastic energy regardless! If the tables turned and a man released a similar song, it would not go over so well and I don't think this would even fly for a woman to release today.
Circle the Drain is my favorite non-single track. It is such a departure from the sound we have had so far - much more dark. Not a subject you hear too much in mainstream pop music, which is always something that interests me. It is also well written, quite poetic yet blunt at the same time.
The One That Got Away is sonically and lyrically the sequel to Teenage Dream. It has that (now) standard pop melody again. I really enjoy this song, even though it is on the sadder side, it has a great sound and singability.
E.T. has some crazy lyrics, but I love the hard hitting beats and addictive melody! Her vocals have been amazing this entire album but they are especially fantastic here. Her vocal delivery (and effects) are absolutely perfect for this tune! Even though I am nowhere near a Kanye West fan, I do prefer the remix version featuring a rap from him. It does well to mix up the vibe.
Who Am I Living For? is the most forgettable song on the album for me. A lot of oversinging happening for my taste and not a lot of texture otherwise so it is quite boring to listen to in my opinion.
Pearl is another one that doesn't stick with me. It took me an embarrassing amount of years to actually listen to this album in full so maybe that is the problem with these later deep cuts! This one is much better than the last track but still quite boring.
Hummingbird Heartbeat wakes me up with an energetic, assertive intro (I suppose "You make me feel like I am losing my virginity" squares up to Firework when it comes to odd opening lines!). We get back to some natural instruments in this one which is really quite nice after many electronic tracks beforehand. Now, I am back to wanting to run around the room so all is right with the world.
Not Like the Movies closes out the standard tracklist with a snoozefest ballad.
I believe Teenage Dream is one of the last great eras in pop music. Nowadays, we are lucky to get more than one single leading up to the album then one single on album release date and the artist dips and all promo falls off a cliff. I miss when eras would have a slow burn for a couple of years! 2 years after its release, we get Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection with 7 more tracks - 3 of which are completely brand new! Extending this explosive era, giving it a proper send off and cementing Katy Perry as pop royalty.
Part of Me is another classic hit, I absolutely loved this track when it came out and jammed to it all the time! It is a great, energetic, empowering, perfectly pop song!
Wide Awake was considered a farewell to this era. "Falling from cloud nine" illustrates the bittersweet sentiment as well as many other lyrics. I think this was a great send off, it keeps true to the album's overall production while reaching out into the dark for what may come in the future.
Dressin' Up takes that darker production and twists it into something mysterious and intriguing with its slower intro which then blasts into massive beats for the chorus. This song definitely has the feel of a cold, foggy dance floor with thin strobes shooting in all directions.
While there are some skips, there is no denying that Teenage Dream is one of the most important pop albums of our time. This album alone scored five number one hits!!! That is a truly amazing achievement and she was the first woman to do so.

Album of the Week #71
Psy 9th
(2022)
by Psy
Overall Rating: 6/10
TL;DR: This album is just lacking the magic that his previous hits had, and heâs left hanging on to the magic of his guests.Â
(I have to say though, this is a pretty gnarly album cover, 9/10)
Overall Thoughts
Speaking of old kpop stars, have you ever wondered what happened to Psy? Man comes out with one of the greatest songs of the century, makes kpop a household name, releases a followup that does not do as well, then he isnât heard from again. That isnât from a lack of effort, since 2012 he has released three albums, and done songs with will.i.am (?),Snoop Dogg (??), and Ed Sheeran (??!!?) and tons with super big name kpop stars. In this album though he collabed with a member of BTS which means weâre now reminded he exists.Â
This album was a clear attempt to come back into the public consciousness and this time it worked. The big song (âThat Thatâ) with Suga from BTS shows the fun Psy that we know with great horns and a super infectious melody. The only thing its lacking for me is a super good chorus, this one is just too stagnant and simple, lacking something that would push it into being a song I would actually seek out.Â
He spends the rest of the album collabing with different big artists, many of which have recently joined the label he started as a kind of safe haven from the harshness of the big 3. The songs with Crush and Sung Si Kyung are pretty boring examples of what I call âChinese Supermarket Music,â a crawling ballad that seems to never end and is sung by someone that is giving a little too much. âSleeplessâ with Heize left a lot to be desired for me as I absolutely love her as an artist and was annoyed he used her (like almost every other guest artist in this album) as just someone to sing the chorus while he raps the verses. âGANJIâ featuring Jessi thankfully breaks this pattern, with a âscrew the hatersâ song thatâs kind of funny to imagine Psy singing. Especially when you add the fact that Jessi is the most stereotypically New Yorker you can imagine, with all of her English words in the song toting a New York accent. The song is a little abrasive but if thatâs your thing then itâs pretty good.Â
My favorite off of the album is âNowâ with Hwasa (one of my favorite kpop artists of all time) which I applauded for being so authentically 80s, with period perfect synths and a sense of drama that can only be possible in the early 80s. While it turns out it was TOO authentically 80s, as its a cover of âWhen the Rain Begins to Fallâ by Jermaine Jackson, and the only thing they changed was the language of the lyrics. I mean Iâm glad they introduced me to the better original version, but thatâs the thing, the original is better! Câmon Psy!
Now there are Psy solo works on this album obviously, but honestly none of them are that good. All of them seem to call back to a 2010s era of pop that weâve all moved on from, with âHello Mondayâ just sounding like a 2015 hit that everyone moved on from a week later, and âEverdayâ being a song that would be playing over a lasertag game from my 12th birthday. The only song that is memorable is âCelebâ but its too simple and is just lacking the substance to be a single.
Listen, I write this all as a Psy lover. Someone who measures their time as BGS and AGS (Before and After Gangnam Style) and listened to this album the day it dropped. This album is just lacking the magic that his previous hits had, and heâs left hanging on to the magic of his guests.Â
