It has not been a productive day, but I did get my homework done before tomorrow's session and didn't lose my composure while writing it (not that there would have been anyone here to see but still), so there's that.
#random personal stuff#there's creative stuff I wanted to write but didn't#and analysis stuff I wanted to do but didn't#my boss says that presenting papers at conventions like the one I'm going to at the end of the month looks good on a resume#and basically implied that I should continue doing it#but I've run out of papers from my grad school days and would have to write new ones#but what would I even write about?#everything I have Thoughts on isn't very academic#I've already presented on something literally no one cares about and that was utterly thankless so probably not a good idea again#if I don't get an award at convention it will be deeply embarrassing#(since there are only four papers including mine in the alumni category)#self-evaluations at work need to be done this week and I'm dreading it#I feel like a barely adequate employee and I'm afraid my boss will criticize me and that I disappoint her#and I have so much to read for looming book groups that I somehow got roped into#I feel like I'm forgetting something somewhere#why did I use to want to be an academic? I'm not even in class and my brain can't keep up#but it's the closest to the only thing I can sort of do#do you ever just...not know what you want to do or be#like at all?#there is literally nothing I want out of life#least of all what I want to be when I grow up#of course a lot of us don't know that yet#but I feel like I should by now#anyway wow sounds like I should probably sleep or something#will I do that? ...eventually?

another super insulting part of the watcher situation i haven't rly seen ppl addressing much
ryan deadass saying smth like "nobody else on youtube has made tv quality content"
like... i really feel like it's important to highlight that bc not only do they obviously have no respect for their audience, but that statement shows they have no respect for their peers in the industry, either.
not to mention it is a shining example of bleeding arrogance to such a high degree, you will straight up fucking lie bc you're truly convinced you're that special when you're anything but.
there's been NUMEROUS online creators who were recognized by entertainment industry workers BECAUSE they made tv quality content & even full stop blockbuster quality content.
bo burnham started on youtube & is now one of the most wellknown & loved standup comedians of our generation, with numerous netflix specials & even a movie he wrote & directed under his belt.
the try guys, fellow ex-buzzfeed employees, had their own tv specials on food network (based off their youtube shows, btw) & a documentary made about them as well
rosanna pansino has also been on numerous food network shows both as a host & a judge
quinta brunsun, another fellow ex-buzzfeed employee, went on to create her own whole ass sitcom that has been highly praised
matpat cameo'd in the fnaf movie because of his theories & multiple other fnaf creators had small cameos through the employee of the month board easter egg
markiplier made multiple high-quality shows on youtube & is now working on a highly anticipated movie (he was also planned to cameo in the fnaf movie but couldn't due to conflicting schedules with his own movie)
hot ones got their own tv gameshow due to their popularity & they are still one of the most wellknown, beloved & respected internet shows
many short films made on youtube went on to premiere at film festivals & even in theaters
the hit horror film "talk to me" was created by youtubers rackaracka
webseries of actual fucking tv shows have also existed for literal decades
the list goes on.
to seriously think that overproduced bullshit is all you need to make "tv quality content" is not only tone-deaf, but shows they do not even know what they're talking about. many tv shows & huge blockbuster movies are made with absolutely microscopic budgets & small teams, & they still get praised & awarded for the passion, dedication, & creativity that shined brightly under those restrictions.
the blair witch project is probably the most wellknown & highly praised example of this, but it is far from the Only example
it is a whole other slap in the face, again ESPECIALLY when puppet history is one of their most popular shows, to spit in the face of internet history. to see the success of their predecessors, even ppl they fucking worked with at buzzfeed, & deny them of all their success & efforts to get where they ended up.
no, y'all are not the first people to make "tv quality content" on the internet. FAR from it. because your crap isn't even genuine "tv quality".
but you are the first ones to ever disrespect not only your audience, but your own fucking industry & your peers on this level.
& you are the first & i sorely hope the only fuckwads dumb enough to pull a stunt this fucking stupid, out of touch & utterly tone deaf.
#mine#watcher#sorry this is hopefully my last post but this pretention grated me#& im floored nobody has mentioned it#like sincerely how fucking dare you? what the fuck is wrong with you?#how far up your ass is that building long stick???#not to mention youtube is 18 fucking years old.#it is literally statistically impossible for a website as huge as youtube is to exist that long#& never have any 'tv quality' content on it. be mother fucking serious.#many ytbers were recognized by entertainment industry marvels BECAUSE they made content that was already tv quality#fuck off.

🐙‼️OCTO ALERT‼️🐙
After a long bit, I finally finished the rest of the Octonauts! Enjoy more of my interpretations of them, and if you haven't seen my previous post about them, click here for Peso, Kwazii and Captain Barnacles!
In a world where most of the population consists of animal shifters, the Octonauts are a group marine biologists and activists who help bring attention to both the curious beauty of the Earth's waters and the harms that threaten its incredible ecosystems.
Tweak is the Octonaut's engineer, and she was the only member apart from the Captain himself who had been a part of the Octopod's original, hired crew. She's seen members come and go and had gone through the worst alongside her captain, yet her loyalty hasn't wavered even in the years she had served by his side. In fact, her love for adventure and marine life only seemed to grow as time passes. Apart from Kwazii- who she didn't fully trust at first, and rightfully so at the time- Barnacles considers her as someone he can put 100% of his faith in, and even the rest of their crew knows that she's someone they can truly rely on with anything.
Shellington is the Octonaut's scientist and was hired as their marine specialist. His colleagues would consider him a considerate man who's knowledge is only second to their founder, which sometimes scares the crew with just how much information he knows of any given animal. As for the Vegimals... Well, Let's just say that Shellington wanted to produce some food for the crew to keep them from surfacing every few months, and so, decided to start a greenhouse within the Octopod. Disappointed at the rate of which their goods are growing, he decided to "lend them a little help", though he instead finds himself becoming a father of 5 the following morning. He is now a full carnivore. He can't look at certain vegetables the same way again.
Dashi is the Octonaut's IT specialist and photographer, and so, often works alongside Tweak and Shellington (who she had been hired alongside) both on-field and within the Octopod. Though her knowledge on marine life can't compare to some of the other members, as a photographer she documents their missions, the creatures they had helped and occasionally files or publishes any new findings or updates regarding certain species. Prior to her work as an Octonaut, she was actually a well-renowned journalist who had earned several awards.
And, of course, how could I forget
Professor Inkling is the Octonaut's renowned founder, and is one of the oldest shifters to date. He's a knowledeable octopus, and though most founders and CEOs would rather lounge comfortably for the remainder of their lives, Inkling enthusiastically works alongside his employees and even assists and advises them if ever needed.
Why is he the only member of the Octonauts who isn't part human? the artist thinks it was funny Well, some believe that he's from an older generation of shifters, raised in his animal form. It certainly has some merit to it, especially considering no one- not even the octonauts themselves- had even recognised his species.
Barnacles believes that Kwazii should show more respect towards Inkling and should stop muttering assumptions and theories with Dashi and Shellington.

Life-Changing Money Manifestation Tip 💰
This is not a technique I learned from books, or a principle my elders taught me. It is simply something I have observed to be unfailingly effective.
I know it might seem counterintuitive, impractical, and perhaps even downright foolish. But it has been consistently true for me and the people around me.
The tip is: Never ever be frugal with money.
Even when you're afraid you won't have enough, be open-handed with your spending. Spend on your needs, spend on your wants, spend on others who deserve your generosity. Just. Keep. Spending.
The fuck, right? What if you already don't have enough to begin with?
Well, you know how they say, "Love is infinite" or "There's enough love to go around" or "Love multiplies, it doesn't divide"?
The same is true for money.
Money is energy. It just happens to have physical manifestations like coins, bills or gold.
Love too is energy. It just happens to have physical manifestations like kisses, words or gifts.
And it is common knowledge that if we wish to be loved, we must first love ourselves, and give love freely to those who are worth it. We must let love flow through us.
Same with money. If we want to have it, we must first spend it on ourselves and give it freely to those we deem worth it. We must let money flow through us.
And flow it will.
Just as it is nearly impossible for a cold-hearted person to invite love, it is also very hard for a stingy person to invite money.
I have seen this first-hand many times.
This man owned a boutique advertising agency. He gave out bonuses and free international trips to his team the way corporations give out cheap pizzas to their employees. And back then, this man's business thrived. Some months, he made more than global agencies did. And the awards were pouring in too. He was on top of the world.
Suddenly, his elderly mother got terribly sick, and he panicked. He knew he had to spend a fortune on her medical bills, and his fear got the best of him. So he cancelled the free trips. He stopped giving bonuses. Eventually, he even cut down salaries and moved to a smaller office.
One year later, his business went bankrupt. Because all his talented employees left. And with that, the trust of his clients dried out. His business — which had the potential to become an empire — ended up becoming just a TikTok trend.
Because he held on to money too tightly... money felt suffocated and walked out on him entirely.
The opposite example is me. No, I do not also own an ad agency. But I have learned to never worry about money. And since then, money has never disappointed me.
Last year, someone dear to me had been praying for a MacBook, but her parents couldn't afford it. I too couldn't afford it. Not without digging into my savings. So I did. Because I know money will always come back to me. And it did.
Two days after I placed the order, I received an email from Shareworks that my stocks were ready to be withdrawn. The amount? Double what I paid for the Mac. These stocks are released yearly, so I tend to forget about them. But they came at the right time.
And it is like this every time.
I buy a Louis Vuitton bag with money meant for my holiday. Suddenly, a friend invites me to go with them on a fully paid trip to the same country I was planning to visit.
I buy a bunch of tarot decks with a week's worth of transportation costs, and my company announces we're working from home for a week while they repair some rain damage.
I buy a box of Patchi chocolates when I'm already short on my monthly budget, and my salary gets released early because it's the holidays, and the CEO is feeling friendly.
I know life is not always as sweet as I described it to be. Sometimes, it's not about Louis Vuittons and Patchis, but about diapers and cough medicine. I am perfectly aware some people are struggling — not about holidays and tarot splurges, but about keeping the electricity on and putting food on the table. I will not pretend to know the solution to their hardships.
What I do know is there are people who are considered poor in my community who are seriously way happier than me. And I know I have had bosses who made thrice as I did who were far more miserable than me.
And that tells me that despite our different stations in life, energy is energy. And it's always best to let it flow freely.
So I repeat... never ever be frugal with money.
When it knocks on your door, say, "Hey, nice to see you!" When it leaves your house, say, "See you again soon!" And when it finally seems to be making itself at home, do not lock it in the basement. Cook dinner with it. Invite your friends over. Watch a movie. Do karaoke. Look money in the eyes and say, "I'm glad you've decided to stay."

Best 23 of BL 2023 - Quirky Awards
SHOCK & AWE AWARDS
1. Biggest BL surprise of 2023:
The last 3 months of 2023 in general got my biggest WTF award.
GMMTV fielding OffGun AND TayNew in the same quarter while also airing Last Twilight (arguably one of their best BLs ever)
That they ALSO optioned 3 JBLs
That there's a high heat omegaverse BL staring Pavel
That there were 20 BLs airing and none of them Korean.
With 5 VAMPIRE BLs announced for next year
But my prize in this category goes to My Dear Gangster Oppa.
It's just crazy:
Thai talent, Korean money + IP (this is adapted from a manwha) airing on a Chinese channel (iQIYI). Plus it was GOOD and made smart reuse of a pair who richly deserved it. I'm delighted by the eclectic insanity of this production. And wonder if any other film genre could even do anything like this.
2. The “that country did WHAT?” award:
The 8th Sense from Korea?!
I mean, seriously?! Dealing with metal health, suicide, darkness, therapy, age gap, & first time love BUT FROM KOREA? And then openness and casual boyfriend physical affection? What's next? An actual hard fought coming out narrative with an HEA? Gay domesticity and families?
Careful Korea, you'll strain something. Possibly your own culture and film industry.
I should stop having expectations of Korea, they keep surprising me.
Runners up: Korea letting OnlyOneOf do Bump Up Business not to mention that OmegaX thing. AND Korea adapting Why R U? What are you up to, Korea? Qua? Is this a coded message? Should we send help? Do you need snacks?
3. Biggest casting whoa! where did you come from? award:
GeminiFourth in My School President.
Seriously? Babies what? How did GMMTV find you? How do you exist? How is BL this lucky?
4. That studio did WHAT now? award:
GMMTV putting EarthMix into Moonlight Chicken.
And then doubling down with G4 as the damn sides.
Fucking genius.
5. I’m sad you were ignored award:
Destiny Seeker.
It's just a really fun little Thai pulp, the pairs were good, silly dialogue, plus consent and other good rep. I enjoyed it. No one talked about it AT ALL.
6. 2023 BL That Actually Made Me Lose My Mind Award?
Laws of Attraction. -The casting, the crazy story, the soapy drama! But specifically: Film playing Charn - the range of his smiles alone. GLORIOUS
I mean I Feel You Linger in the Air also sparked something in me, but LoA drove me actually nuts.
NARRATIVE AWARDS
7. Best story 2023:
La Pluie
I know, you're surprised, right? At the time I didn't chat much about it but I really enjoyed the discourse others were having. I love anything that really examines the fated mates (soulmates) trope and the idea of "the one". What a clever way to do that. (This is one reason UWMA is my favorite Thai BL.)
This one reminded me of the way Color Rush approached allegory and that's no bad thing. Such an impressive little piece.
8. Best narrative structure 2023 award:
Unintentional Love Story.
I know this may seem a simplistic pick. But I love the tidiness of this no frills contemporary romance, how the culture of work and personal ethics and corruption fight against the main character's affection and integrity. Poor baby boy is driven into a corner and then punished for it. But it is punishment he feels he deserves, and so it is up to his (now) ex to figure out what went wrong and why.
It's just great. I love it when no one is stupid or wrong, it's just impossible circumstances and unintentional love deeply felt.
9. Best 2023 dialogue (script) award:
Jun & Jun
Never before has Korea laced a BL with that much perfectly executed innuendo. It was a master class. I didn't know you could be that lascivious in Korean, quite frankly. Plus the way the 2 Juns constantly seamlessly transition between formal register (work, public - where they are boss/employee) to informal register (when they are alone and age mates + childhood sweethearts).
Beautiful to hear and watch.
10. Favorite scene 2023:
The dub con scene in I Cannot Reach You because I AM TRASH for an out of control seme. I'm sorry I just AM.
I have said it before, I will say it again, NO ONE DOES THIRST like Japan. And when that thirst bubbles over, it is heart-clenching and very hot.
11. The most rewatchable BL of 2023 award:
Our Dating Sim
That scene where they lie on the floor + the stolen kiss + giggle? Come on, it should be on comfort repeat in war rooms. It could bring world peace.
ACTORS & CHARACTERS AWARDS
12. Best performance of a queer actor in a leading role, 2023:
Fluke in Make a Wish.
It was fun to see him as an irreverent immortal and while I love OhmFluke I also really enjoyed this new pairing. It was a genuine pleasure to watch.
13. Best pining 2023:
The moot pining in Tokyo in April is...
Boys, seriously? Japan must you destroy us like this? Hurts so good.
14. Best wingman 2023 (The Namgoong Award)
Tiw from My School President
I mean, come on, of course it's him!
(Also can you believe Mark went on from this to do fricking Only Friends!? To Last Twilight! Come on GMMTV GIVE HIM A LEAD!)
15. Biggest OMG I LOVE you boys together, YAY!
Dimpled McMafia & Feral Bunny Foo Foo from Kiseki Dear to Me.
They were feral for each other.
We were feral for them
It was a whole delightful THING.
16. Most unexpected return of a BL pair? award:
The Private Lessons pair showing up in Love Class 2.
I know it was only a cameo, but SERIOUSLY? Thank you SO MUCH Korea! A big studio picking up a Strongberry pairing? I love you.
Seriously tho between them, Taiwan & Korea tried for ALL THE CAMEOS this year.
17. Well aren't you two just the prettiest? award:
NetJames in Bed Friend.
Need I say more?
18. LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Bah Vinh in Vian & Mr Cinderella 2. I did like either show but I loved him in them. Especially the make outs.
Yes you have chemistry with all the boys in Vietnam and you kiss beautifully. But it's okay now honey, you have the crown. Relax, you're stressing us out.
RANDOM PICKS
19. Favorite Linguistic Moment of 2023:
Our Dating Sim
Caught in the act by the elevator scene. OMG it's so funny. They're being such boyfriend shits to each other, and to be caught in the act by THAT character, and try to manifest formal language whole cloth? Hilarious.
Honorable mention to War Peanuts in Destiny Seeker.
20. Biggest disappointment of 2023:
You Are Mine
Seriously Taiwan, AGAIN you disappoint me with an Office BL? You're Taiwan, land of offices and suits. This should be YOUR SETTING TO WIN. And yet... argh. I mean it wasn't bad. But it wasn't good either. Stop it Taiwan, do better.
Runners up? Between Us, Chains of Heart, Dangerous Romance - this was a HOTLY contested category.
+ 2 Winners in the sub-category of FUCK YOU FOR THAT ENDING award:
The Director who Buys Me Dinner - I mean this nicely but: you have your lane now Korea, stop hurting us, that's Japan's responsibility and they do it better.
I Feel You Linger In the Air - I'm just hugely disappointed. Thailand ALMOST got its second 10/10 from me, but that damn ending.
Argh.
21. Best Wardrobe/Prop Use 2023
The shower of packaged bedsheets in My Personal Weatherman
Amazing. Brilliant. No notes.
22. Best Queer Rep 2023
Chot in Step By Step
In fact, all the queer characters in this show were treated with great integrity.
AND props to this cast for refusing to do fan service. GOOD FOR YOU! Fuck those sasang wankers.
Runners up? The found family cast of Love in Translation and the Rainbow Rice Cakes in The New Employee.
23. Best Meta Trope call out
Tin Tem Jai
Come on, what a zinger, but at themselves (and Taiwan)
Final question: which of the 23 was the hardest for me to pick?
Honestly? Question #1 this year. But also question #20.
(Last year: 2022's Version)
Remember I only pull from shows that were completely finished by the end of 2023. Or The Sign probably would have taken multiple categories. But it will fall into 2024 offerings.

Oh So Reluctant - PJM (18+)
Pairing: Husband!Jimin X Wife!Reader
Theme: Angst, Arrange marriage au.
Summary: For the past eleven months that you have been married to Park Jimin, he has not looked at you the way he has been doing today. And there is sinister in his eyes.
Word count: 1819
Warnings: Angst, unhappy married life, Jimin is cold, reader is lonely, mentions of alcohol consumption, sexual tension but no smut for this part (yes there is a second part, it's a twoshot), brief Taehyung X Reader.
Minors are NOT welcomed in this blog!!
A/N: This story was requested by lovely @chimmy-licious.
As mentioned before, this is a twoshot, so there will be a second part, I just don't know when haha!
Part 2
****************
You check yourself out in the elevator mirror.
You look perfect tonight. Just as you always wanted to look for an event so important to you. Saving a month-worth of your paycheque, you customized this cherry red dress for yourself. The wrap pattern of the dress gives an alluring view of your collarbone and cleavage while the dangerous slit ends in the middle of your right thigh. You decided to let your hair loose and matched your lip shade with your dress.
You look sexy, you look hot, you look beautiful and you look lonely.
You know what’s waiting for you ahead. The worst part is not people bombarding you with questions about your husband’s absence, it is how pathetic you are gonna look while you accept the best employee award and there will be no one of your own to clap for you. The worst part is also how you are going to hopelessly stare at your colleagues as they dance with their partners tonight.
You braced yourself up for all of it in advance but somehow tonight you feel less confident than you thought you would. Not having someone to share your special night with, is certainly painful but having someone and not mattering enough to them, hits on a different level. You are a victim of the latter situation.
Your husband, Park Jimin, is always busy. Well, you can’t really expect anything else from the CEO of one of the leading entertainment companies of South Korea, making him the youngest person ever to gain that position. The responsibilities he has makes him even busier and you understand it all. You understand, that is why he is so reluctant towards your presence in his life. Even though you are his wife, it is still an arranged marriage, held against Jimin’s consent.
When you met him once before your marriage he clearly told you not to expect anything from him as he is marrying you only for his mother’s wish. There was no malice in his voice, it was just cold. And he has been cold to you ever since. Not that he has any business being any warm to you.
He didn’t marry you for any business-related convenience. He married you because his mother thought her golden son will end up marrying some girl from the industry and she read news on famous people getting divorced almost every other day. She met your mother at the church, they became friends and worked their ways on being relatives.
You, a perfectly contained human being with a stressful but nice job, had to cave in to your mother’s wishes because she was worried that her overly-independent daughter may just end up alone, which certainly wasn’t your plan.
You always wanted to settle down in your career first and then look for a partner, make a home and then kids etc etc. so, when your mother approached you about Jimin, you saw no reason to revolt. But you were disappointed when Jimin told you he wasn’t ready for this marriage and it’s only his mother's wish not his.
You tried to talk to your mother about it but it all went in vain.
Both of the ladies were too adamant to get you two married, they threatened to go for a hunger strike otherwise.
And now you are here. After exactly eleven months and two days of your marriage, you are unhappy and you feel alone more than ever. Jimin never pays you much attention. For the first couple of months you tried to be friends. You cooked dinner, planned dates, gave him gifts but never received anything more than a “thanks” with a tightlipped smile in return. Rather he appeared to be quite uncomfortable about it all, so you stopped trying and stayed away.
A week ago, you handed him the invitation card of your company’s annual day celebration. You told him it would be nice if he attends, since you are going to be awarded as the employee of the year. He only nodded and said, “I have a press conference that day. I don’t think I can make it. But…” a pause, “congratulations anyway.”
Your heart broke, tears threatened to spill but you gave him a smile.
For the first time in your married life, you realized that you like your husband and not having him beside you on your special day not only made you feel lonely but also destroyed you. But then again, you can’t make someone love you if they don’t.
The elevator dinged, signaling you have reached your floor and you prepare yourself for faking excuses and smiles.
***************
You take a sip of your red wine as you stare at the trophy, which has made itself quite comfortable on the bar-top.
You should have been on cloud-nine by now, you should have been drowning yourself in drinks, getting wasted and being happy but you are doing none of it. You are definitely happy but not as much as you should be, not as much as you thought you would be.
You take another sip and that is when someone places a hand on your shoulder,
“Congratulations, milady” says a voice right beside your right ear. It’s Taehyung.
“Hey. Thanks.” you whisper, without even caring if your voice is audible to him or not.
“Oh? What is it? Why do you look so down when you should be twerking in the middle of the dance floor?” Tae pouts. His remark makes you laugh.
“I am happy, Tae. Just a little tired.” you reply wearily.
“I don’t think so, draling. What is it? Is it your husband?” Tae asks, scooting closer.
You don’t say anything, choosing to stay silent.
“That’s why you should have accepted me when I asked you out for like five times in two years.” Taehyung warps a hand around your shoulder in an attempt to comfort you. You let yourself relax in his touch.
Taehyung is incredibly handsome, he is nice, funny, charming and rich. And he is very much interested in you. However, you never saw him as anything more than a friend and colleague. So, you kept on declining his advances. Moreover, you aren’t brave enough to date the CEO’s son and then let people talk behind your back saying that you slept your way up. But today you let your mind wander, today you give it a thought. Maybe if you chose him instead of giving into your mother’s wish, you would have been happy? Maybe you would fall in love with Taehyung eventually? Maybe Jimin would be with someone he actually liked, instead of getting stuck in this relationship with you? Maybe? Just maybe?
Your mouth runs before you could think it through, “will you accept me now? If I were to divorce my husband and come to you?”
You catch Taehyung off guard with your question but he quickly gains his sanity back and smiles, “I will.”
“Will you mind staying a bit away from my wife?” the voice comes from beside you. You know the voice, you know the owner. It’s your husband, it’s Jimin.
You twist your head at the speed of light and see him standing right beside your barstool. There he stands like the Greek God he is. His perfectly sculpted body is draped in a purple suit accompanied by a purple silk dress-shirt that has its first few buttons opened. His dark hair falls on his eyes, making him look much more appealing than he already is.
You catch him glaring at Tae’s arm, which is encircled around your shoulder. Is he jealous? But why?
You suppose Tae noticed that too, as he unwraps his hand from your form.
Jimin now looks directly into your eyes. There is a darkness in his eyes that you never perceived before. Something that makes chill run through your spine. You try to comprehend the situation. You try to think if you are hallucinating or not because there is no way Jimin would actually be here.
“Sure man. She’s all yours.” says Tae as he gets up from his bar stool and proceeds to leave you two alone. No, you are not hallucinating. Both you and Tae can’t hallucinate at the same time.
You part your lips to say something but you are immediately interrupted by your co-worker.
“Y/N! Why won’t you receive your calls? Mr. Park was looking for you like a lost puppy.” says Hyun Mi.
“Oh? I was… ah distracted.” You reply somehow, avoiding the ice-cold glare that your husband is giving you now. Thanks to your misery, you completely forgot you carried a purse and that had your phone inside it.
“Very sad. Mr. Park you could have watched your wife receiving her trophy if you came thirty minutes earlier. Anyway, enjoy.” she says again before getting lost into the crowd.
Jimin walks towards the seat Taehyung was sitting previously and sits down.
“Congratulations” he says, you nod. You don’t look at him even when he sits closer than he ever had.
“I thought you had a press conference to attend today?” You ask quietly.
“It ended early so I came.” Jimin says while waving to the bartender and placing his order.
“You didn’t have to.”
“Why? Are you annoyed that your plan of divorcing me got interrupted?” Jimin chuckles. It’s probably the third time in eleven months that you are hearing him chuckling. But this time it’s because of you, and it’s dark, filled with malice.
You don’t say anything.
“Who was that guy? Your ex?” he asks again.
“No. He can be my future though.” You reply calmly, as if you are suggesting something as casual as dinner menu.
“What makes you think I will let you go so easily?” Jimin places his next question.
“Your reluctance towards my existence?”
“I am not reluctant towrdas you, Y/N. I am rather very much aware.” Jimin raises his voice a bit.
“Aware of how much you don’t want me in your life?”
“No! Quite the opposite actually.”
That makes you take a look at him, finding him already staring at you. You cock your eyebrow as if to ask for an explanation.
If you expected him to say something then you are wrong because he changes the topic right away.
“You look very… beautiful tonight.” Jimin rakes his eyes through your body, which seem to come to a halt when they reach to your chest and then drop down to your exposed thigh. You cross your legs and expose more of your skin as you catch him staring shamelessly.
He smirks. One of his hands reaches to grab the supple flesh of your thigh harshly. You almost spit your drink out.
“Don’t tease me, Y/N. I have been having a tough time controlling myself for these eleven months already.” Jimin’s voice drops down a few octaves as his thumb draws invisible circles on your thigh.
Your eyes widen but you try to play innocent, “What do you mean?”
Jimin’s fingers glide higher on your smooth skin and it reaches where you have only imagined his fingers before.
His digits hover above your mound as he mouths, “Let me show you what I mean.”

Hello, I was wondering if you could write angst with Luca from the bear where Luca spends more time at the cafe than he does at home. And him and reader possible get into an argument about it? It can end however you see fit. - ✨
SITUATIONS — LUCA [Summer Requests]
A/N: angst you want? Say no more! I tweaked it just a bit so it ties in with s3, and it’s shorter than what I typically write but I hope you still like! ✨
WARNINGS: language & uncertainties in a relationship.
𓇼࿔*𝜗𝜚°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・ 𓇼࿔*𝜗𝜚°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・ 𓇼࿔*𝜗𝜚°❀⋆
“Do I need to be worried?” You spit out, feeling your heart hammer in your chest as you stand a great distance from the bonfire.
No matter how far you and Luca walked off, it was evident to your friends, old friends of his, and new friends that your conversation was anything but good.
You were beyond frustrated with Luca and that was rare. The both of you did pretty well at voicing exactly what may be going on with each other but ever since you chose to continue to follow him back to the states, back to Chicago, you gradually saw the change in your boyfriend of five years. It’s only been a week into month two. Some called you crazy for picking up your life yet again to be right beside Luca but love will make you do things others might not understand.
“What are you on about?” Luca’s brows curve in awards in confusion.
Folding your arms in defense you swallow, “Luca, you showed up almost two hours late here with her, with Sydney. I called you repeatedly after looking at the spaces nearly all day and it took your sister to show up to the new spot, to tell you to respond to me; that’s only because she lives on that side of town.”
Luca took a three month leave from Brimstone’s Gate and since your slowly growing e-commerce pottery business: Whimsy Glazes was mostly online, you were able to pick up and go as well, although the rental space you paid for in Copenhagen carried all of your supplies and equipment, you considered opening up a physical business once Luca voiced after a month being in Chicago, that he would contemplate moving to the states for a change and to be closer to his sister.
Again it felt like you were making the sacrifices to be here with him and not once did he ask you but it was started to feel like a given. Like you were expected to just follow and maybe that was your first mistake once you left New Zealand behind. That’s where the two of you met for the first time, you’ve been settled out there since after you graduated university but Luca showed you another piece of the world once he came into yours.
New Zealand was for you what Copenhagen was for him and now he wanted a change but did that also include a different path from you as well? You never had doubts about your relationship even making it this far and not to say that it was a spotless relationship but this situation was talking to your gut more than ever now.
Luca deeply inhales as he responds, “I truly apologize for that love. Time got the best of us and I’m bad with keeping my phone on silent…that sound’s like excuses I know and I’ll do better.”
Digging your fingers into your forearms you state, “see that’s the thing…I had a feeling you would say this to me but you’ve been at Shapiro’s spot constantly.”
Luca loved to give Chef Shapiro shit since he tended to be snarky, always observant along with being opinionated and pushy—or persistent according to him. Once his found his own space, got it inspected, made the changes, and started planning out the interiors, Shapiro was quick on looking for employees. He even considered Luca but it seemed like the now buzzed haired blond (for the season—his words, something else he recently changed as well) was also holding out much like Sydney.
So you heard.
Ultimately she made her decision.
“I alternate,” Luca interrupts, “between the bear and Smudges—I mean—The Blue-Chandelier Bistro—sheesh that’s still a fucking mouthfull isn’t it?” He attempts to lighten the tension but you’re not backing down which makes him sigh, “Babe, I’ve never given you a reason to be worried about us have I?”
Shaking your head you look away from his stare out into the darkest of the navy ocean, “No but it’s been five years and the way you’re around her reminds me of how you first approached me: Slightly awkward but talkative, curious, a glimmer in the left eye of yours.”
Luca’s shaking his head, reaching to grab your chin so that your focus is back on his, “No, don’t do that. I love you, only you. I feel like you’re looking for something that isn’t there. Syd and I are mates and I thought you two got on well too.”
“I like Sydney.”
That was not a lie. She was thoughtful, passionate, funny even, and you related to her on experiencing not being heard in spaces especially in art school. It’s what drove you to have your own business and be your own boss. You genuinely wanted to see her succeed and you wouldn’t be pointing the fingers at her. Call it insecurity or the purple devil (like you often did) but somewhere beneath it all the signs felt like they were becoming more clear.
“She brilliant.” Luca comments in admiration and you slowly nod your head, “I give credit where credit is due and over this short span of time, we’ve connected.”
“And spent a lot of time together.” You add, “Which you’re supposed to do with your kind of field, I get it. There’s a group chat that I’m not part of with you, Sydney, and Marcus and I just feel excluded majority of the time. I start to think: Is it because I’m not a chef so I wouldn’t get it?”
It couldn’t be because you still hung out with other chefs with and without Luca and although you understand that it was healthy to have separate moments from your partner…the pull was becoming evident and you weren’t sure how Luca didn’t see that.
Luca says, “No. I didn’t think you wanted to be in the chat honestly. I’m completely fine not being in yours with your friends.”
“Because you hate them but there’s not a single friend that you have that I hate. I tend to like who you have around because I trust your judgement.”
Luca scoffs, “but you don’t trust me when it comes to Sydney? Which I don’t appreciate by the way. I wouldn’t do that to you, to us. Not when we’ve been together for almost six years.”
Sometimes saying the amount of time spent together feels like a safety net, to remind yourselves that it’s been a good minute, that the love should still be there and it is. However it would be foolish to say that ever since the days flew by in Chicago that the changes were beginning to feel real. Luca had the opportunity to rebuild the gap in his relationship with his sister, consider a life here, view what the cooking atmosphere would be like in the Windy City permanently as he ran down the list of restaurants to tour, taste test, and cook in.
Life was a bit slower in Copenhagen and now this was starting to feel like a consequence and it shouldn’t be, not when you love someone this much.
“…if there’s something there, you need to tell me—
“But there’s not!” Luca finds himself yelling and that’s something he never wanted to do in a relationship. That was his rule, to talk things out and not to shout in order to be heard.
It was what reminded himself of his parents. The arguments would be so loud and long that he would knock on his older sister’s door to hide in there for the night. She would turn the tv up so loud and their night would turn into a whole slumber party of watching movies and playing games until their eyes called them to sleep. He always ended up crashing first while his sister, Georgina would sneak out to grab snacks because she knew Luca would wake up hungry once the house has gone quiet. They were once siblings that provided comfort while dealing with the loss of their parent’s union.
Luca rubs at his jaw in vexation, beginning to pace while your heart continues to pound inside of its cage. He clears his throat as he turns back to you, “I’m sorry for raising my voice and I’m sorry for making you think that there’s anybody else. I know being here means that we both have to find our footing again but I don’t have doubts.”
“That we’ll make it?” You quiz, wondering how the man you loved could be clueless.
Luca frowns, “We don’t need to make it, we just carry on like we always do.”
“I don’t think that’s working for me though, Lu. That’s what I’m trying to tell you.” You sigh, “there’s things going on for the both of us separately but what is there together?”
Luca goes silent at this. He wasn’t sure at first what you meant by this but as he starts to think, you only share moments at night in that cold stale hotel bed together and by then you’re both too tired to carry full on conversations. New information was only shared in passing before you’re both out the door again. There should be more than this like it once was but this can’t continue on if it feels like things are at a standstill.
“Then we’ll do whatever we need to do to get back where we should be.” Luca decides with determination in his eyes, “neither of us are quitters right? Don’t tell me you’ve given up?”
Your throat felt heavy with tears as you managed to get out, “…I’m scared Luca.”
“Good,” Luca exhales with a laugh as he pulls you into his arms, “that means you still give a shit about me and that’s a bit of a relief, I won’t lie.”
You sink into his arms, echoing his laughter you lock your arms behind his back squeezing your head against his chest, “I don’t think I can ever stop even if you don’t decide to stay.”
Luca feels his heart ache at your words because he didn’t believe that this was an end of an era for you two but now that it’s been brought to his attention, he realizes this situation is just as deep as you were experiencing it and he was willing to fight for it with you.
Saying goodbye didn’t sit right with Luca, since he tried to stay in long relationships and figured out what relationships entailed his time, energy, and heart. You were always worth it to him and he never wanted to imagine what life would be like without you.
So he kissed the top of your head mumbling, “I’m not going anywhere.”
That was a promise Luca intended to keep and you chose to believe him…unsure if this would be a mistake on your part underneath it all.

3 Days Left!!
Ding! The countdown letter has arrived as promised! It seems that we accidentally entered the employee evaluation meeting of the restaurant's key staff this time!
Wait a moment!
Worst employee of the month? Worst and best employee ever? This company's employee evaluation system is really as strange as the restaurant itself!
Oh! They also have the worst boss ever!
Okay, I'm not surprised at all. Although I do wonder about the history of the two security guards who attempted to murder their boss.
Well, it doesn't matter. Since the boss has awarded them the "prize", I believe they'v already "resolved their old feud"! Let's encounter them again at the end of the countdown!
What? What do you mean they haven't been applied for yet?
(I posted early today definitely not because I wanted to go to bed early(def not(?

Embarrassing Interviews of Famous Red Scenes
One: Red is a singer, Sans is the brother of the guy that Mettaton is platonically dating.
*AT AN AWARD VENUE, AFTER THE EVENT*
Interviewer: So, when are we going to hear a love song from the newest Golden Voice singer?
Red: *scowling* i don't fucking sing love songs, who do ya think i am?
Interviewer: Our audience will be disappointed, but as you've never sang a single love song, it does sound like you—
*Sans walks past as he talks to his brother, who is Mettaton's plus one*
*Red starts staring with wide sockets at somewhere off-camera.*
Red: *desperate expression* waitaminute, i didn't say i wasn't gonna change my mind, give me that fucking mic right now i'm gonna blast your ears with the best love songs ever okay wait—
———
Two: Red is a famous actor, and Sans is an actor who takes on small roles, like a shopkeeper, a janitor, a random employee, or a passerby. He's not well-known, but people keep seeing him, and he looks familiar, although they can't tell why.
*AT AN INTERVIEW EVENT*
Interviewer: We've seen you play as the main character and the true villain of the movie, but rumours have it that your next step is a rom-com show, is this true?
Red: *confused* who keeps saying stuff like that? i don't do rom-coms.
Interviewer: Does it relate to your previous interview with Mettaton, where you mentioned that you aren't in love, so you have no idea how to play those roles?
Red: yeah, i have no idea what love wou—
*Sans darts past while giggling, running away from his irrate manager and brother, Papyrus*
*Red's stunned.*
Red: *panicking, flustered, a whole mess* actually, never mind. i am so inspired to do rom-coms right the fuck now. where's my manager? hey, you! get that guy's name and – where does he work? hire a scriptwriter from the company to write our love story—i mean a rom-com story and while you're at it, grab him so i can ask him out—ask him about it and—
———
Three: Red is a superstar with lots of talent, Sans is also famous, but as a scientist. His brother is the manager of the famous Mettaton, who receives help from Sans if he needs repairs. Sans gets invited to places because Mettaton appreciates his help so much.
Interviewer: Is it true that you've never fallen in love before?
*AT A SUPERSTAR EVENT*
Red: why do you keep asking me stupid questions? why can't you ask me about how stupid my last movie was? i don't know where they hired the idiot who thought it was a good idea to write a quasar into the last scene, i mean do you even know how stupid it would be for a spaceship to be that close—
Interviewer: *almost crying, wants to keep the topic of love, understands nothing about science at all* So, you have never fallen in love before?
Red: dude, were you not listening at all? i haven't—
*Sans passes by with Mettaton. He recognises Red and stops to talk to him*
Sans: oh, hey. you're that monster captain guy, right? did you know that quasars produce so much light that your space alien team should have been blinded even if your spaceship was made of plot armour?
Red: *staring at the other skeleton with wide sockets* you science.
Sans: *blinks and notices the camera and interviewer* oh. oh, man, sorry, i just overheard—
Red: *sweating* nonono, it's okay. anyway, about quasars, did you see how they put a habitable planet next to a blue star?
Sans: *pained expression* don't remind me. i had to tell my brother it was impossible several times over the course of a month after that movie.
Red: hey, since you like space so much, how about you be a star and stay in mine? *dying expression*
Sans: *flustered* huh?
Red: what about being the center of my galaxy? *desperate and confused expression*
Sans: *sweating* u-um—
Red: i think that you're the core of my world because you make me warm inside. *horrified at the things he's saying*
Sans: *embarrassed* stars—
Red: speaking of stars, are you one? because you're lumino—mmpfff *Sans decides to block his mouth with his hands, blushing and staring at Red in flustered surprise.*
*Red's experiencing the sweet relief of being silenced after his embarrassing words*
Sans: buddy, enough—
Red: *muffled* but you're so pretty. *Red is dying inside, but he can’t stop his mouth*
Sans: *dying noise* ...okay, fine. i give up.
Interviewer: *whimpering, forgotten at the side* ...is that a no?

The Long Game
First, let's acknowledge some major mismanagement by BigHit. Then, let's talk about what I think *might possibly* be their long game.
These are just guesses I have right now--I'm not stating facts and my opinions are subject to change as new info becomes available. But come with me for a few minutes...
In early 2022, Jimin's mail was "omitted" four times by BigHit employees, which lead to late insurance premium payments, which led to an on-paper "seizure" of his apartment. The press sat on that news for three months until the day his With You OST dropped and the scandal overshadowed his release. Jimin went to ground, avoided all social media for months. At this time, Jimin's personal information was leaked on the internet, and that was the last time we saw Jikook hang out alone that we know of.
Now in 2023, since Jimin's album FACE dropped, we already know about the sabotaged sales and streams by Hanteo, Billboard, YouTube, and Spotify. There was the issue with his in-ears not working properly during an encore. On top of all that drama, BigHit didn't get all the physicals shipped in time, they didn't playlist his songs for several days, they never sent his songs to radio (that we can see), they made one tweet to acknowledge Jimin's #1 on Hot100 but nothing else--not even a cake like the other solo albums got, they didn't let him film more than two music videos when they did that for their new groups, the press releases about their stocks going up after Hot100 also credited their new groups, and Jimin only had 9 days of uninterrupted promo between other members' works.
Now I am not a conspiracy theorist. I well understand that the military enlistment compressed schedules, and that each member had say in their creative works and promotions. I'm not a manti. But none of the above is a good look. Add up all those fumbles together, and you could make a solid case for mismanagement.
And now today, we see PD Bang on the cover of Billboard (which, OF COURSE, mentioned Blackpink in the same breath).
JUST LOOK AT THE WAY THE STORY IS BEING SHAPED FOR AMERICAN READERS. You see what's happening here? You think SM is gonna get a cover story for their side of the corporate shakedown?
And then there's this little gem:
"If your question is about the possibility of creating an artist like BTS again, the answer is no. However, if you were to ask whether there would be a K-pop artist from HYBE that tops the Billboard Hot 100 chart, my answer would be yes. [Jimin became the first BTS member to achieve this as a solo act on April 3 when his single “Like Crazy” debuted at No. 1.] The experience of managing BTS and operating different labels gave us access to powerful networks, infrastructures and experiences. With these, HYBE can repeat its remarkable results with the help of talented artists.
Okay so before everyone starts rioting online, take a moment, pause, reflect, think about what all might be going on here, behind the scenes, in this very political world of the music business.
Do I think Bang PD screwed Jimin over to score points with Billboard? No, I do not. But neither do I think Jimin's solo effort is anyone's priority but Jimin's.
"HYBE is primarily focusing on leveraging its accumulated expertise in managing and producing acts that consist of multiple members, rather than solo artists or mixed-gender groups in K-pop."
I think no one ever expected Jimin to make it to #1 on Hot100 and industry insiders felt pretty sure the West wouldn't let him stay in the top 10 the next week. Why? Well, partially racism. But mostly it's bad for their bottom line.
If your entire business model is that people pay for radio play and that gets them on your private chart and the private chart leads to more advertisers and awards... and then someone comes along and DOESN'T pay to play and gets to the top of your chart? Nobody needs you. So you HAVE to sabotage them. You absolutely have to change your rules. (I'm just sitting here waiting for Jimin to release his other songs so that Billboard can change their rules to say you can't be on Hot100 if your name starts with J- and ends with -imin.)
Now, it might have been satisfying for us as fans to see BigHit come out swinging and put Billboard on blast for his sake and ours. But they have ZERO. LEGAL. RECOURSE.
Billboard is privately owned and they can make whatever rules they want. They are part of a larger media company that has connections to every media outlet; no one is gonna publish an exposé any time soon, I promise you. We got exactly ONE English-speaking website to write about it and that was it. Everyone in the industry knows what is going on, and no one has the power to do anything much about it.
So what does that mean for the future?
Well... Bang PD just recently paid a HUGE mark up of $26 million to buy Trevor Noah's home out in LA.
And now he's on the cover of Billboard. WHY? Neither of these things will result in any immediate payout for him.
It's a long game.
And frankly, a very old and honored way of doing business. It's how they went up against the big three and it's how they are gonna go up against the West, I feel it in my gut.
Bang PD is getting a home on US soil. He will be paying US taxes. He's making in-roads by being nice with Billboard folks. He's making contacts; he's already had phone calls with Pharrell and Bieber and Grande and Laroi. Some of those are already shaping into collabs. We already know Hybe has set up shop in the US with Scooter at the helm.
Meanwhile, BigHit is adjusting in real time to the new rules around the charts (culling is happening to Yoongi too, so they changed up the check-out process of the BTS US Store). Suddenly there's plenty of focus on promoting via TikTok and other viral social media. They are dipping their toe into AI. They are discussing their own in-house ticketing option. This company is looking toward the future and hedging its bets.
Do I know with any certainty what's up their sleeve?
Absolutely not.
Do I trust any corporation very much?
Nope.
Do I have faith in BTS?
Probably more than anything else in my life, at this point.
So while I have no insider info, I just feel like the company is making very intentional and methodic footholds into the West. They are not complaining or screaming or suing or threatening anyone. They are not badmouthing competitors or whining about unfair deals. They are laying ground on complicated, political in-roads, one step at a time.
The Expo is in 2030. I'd wager by that time, BTS will have conquered the West and have some radio play.
And I think the company believes that in order to do that, they have to make their new groups profitable while BTS serves. They have to survive for the next two years.
When BTS is back, and their dues have been paid, I think they will be unstoppable. I hope they get to work on solo projects AND group projects. I think they will take over every corner of the world, if managed properly.
They just need to do it in a way that also assuages the Western music industry. The American Powers That Be have a chokehold on music and they will demand their pound of flesh somehow.
I strongly suspect BTS will never pay to play. But they will build relationships and find a way to become so interwoven in the cultural fabric that to deny them a place in Western spaces is to be left behind. And they will do it politely, and gently, and come out smelling like a rose.
So before you go off on social media and scream the walls down about neglect (and there WAS some, in my opinion) and abuse (we don't really know that), just take a moment to consider--if they had no legal recourse against Billboard, how can they beat them at their own game?
The best way to defeat an enemy is to make them a friend.
I'm just guessing here, but I think if fans stay loyal, BTS just might have the last laugh, here. I think they got radio scared as hell.
It sucks that Jimin didn't get fair treatment at this time. He is my bias and I feel it like a knife to my own heart. But he DID make history with his #1 and they can never take it away.
So I say give it time. All the people sniggering at him and BTS right now are going to sing a different tune in the future.
My best guess is that this is a long game, and it will require sacrifices that are totally unfair, but in the end... well, as long as BTS has ARMY, they cannot be denied.
Apobangpo.

In an era of bloated AAA game projects 5-10 years in development, few have been quite as worrying to fans as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, Bioware’s next game in the fantasy series that has been worked on for quite literally nine years, has undergone loads of reworks, restarts and a few different project leaders.
Now, according to insider Jeff Grubb, after a reveal of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf that BioWare has already announced for this summer, the goal is to get the actual game out in 2024. This would be six years after December 2018 when it was announced at The Game Awards.
Surely after all these years it would be ready to release, right? But the project has been baffling where again, after nine years of development and six years since its announcement it has shown fans nothing but concept art and very short teasers. Yes, this actual reveal is planned for this summer, but even if they’re planning a hyper-short marketing cycle, it still feels unlikely. A general rule is that for AAA games especially, whatever release date is first announced will not stick, and a delay is likely for 3-18 months for “polish,” which is usually the given reason. In short, after Dreadwolf’s incredibly tumultuous development, its just a little hard to believe they’d pull off a reveal spun almost immediately into a proper release.
Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will also face serious headwinds from the comparisons it will no doubt evoke. If it comes out in 2024, that would be a year after Baldur’s Gate 3, one of the most acclaimed video games…ever, and an easy GOTY winner last year. Dreadwolf will no doubt have its storyline twists and turns and decisions to be made and party members to romance, but it will be endlessly stacked up against Baldur’s where there’s simply no way it can match it. And I doubt anyone is expecting it to even measure up to The Witcher 3, the must-play fantasy game released in 2015 when development for Dreadwolf began.
It's also unclear how EA’s second major round of layoffs last week may have impacted things. 50 BioWare employees were laid off last year, including a number working on Dreadwolf. BioWare has been in a major slump since the release and high profile failure of Anthem. A new Dragon Age and an upcoming Mass Effect game (again, only seen in nebulous teasers) feel like the studio is trying to return to its glory days but with few of the people who were present during those glory days, as the studio has been wholly transformed. And many would say not for the better.

Lil head cannons about my proxies! || Head Cannons || My AU.
Alright, before we dive in, just so you know, in my alternate universe, Kate is kind of like a proxy! I figured it fits since she's one of the OGs who got looked after by The Operator.
✦˚₊꒷︵︵︵︵︵︵︵︵୨♡୧︵︵︵︵︵︵︵꒷₊˚✦
✦˚₊꒷︵︵︵︵︵︵︵︵୨♡୧︵︵︵︵︵︵︵꒷₊˚✦
Proxies headcannons.
✦˚₊꒷︵︵︵︵︵︵︵︵୨♡୧︵︵︵︵︵︵︵꒷₊˚✦
Kate the Chaser is the OG proxy, I mean, she's the very first proxy in the gang.
Masky, he's the top dog proxy, and Hoody, well, he's like the second-in-command proxy. As for Kate and Toby, they're both part of the proxy crew too.
When it comes to Toby, let's just say the other proxies aren't big fans, especially Kate, who's kind of on the fence about him. Why, you ask? Well, Toby's a real wild one, and he's about as approachable as a cactus. He can be all smiles one moment, but if you give him any lip, he might just chuck a hatchet at your noggin.
Now, Kate is definitely the sweetest and most easygoing of the bunch.
Toby, on the other hand, isn't exactly winning any “Employee of the Month” awards. The others often scratch their heads, wondering why he's even a proxy. I can totally picture them shrugging when someone asks about it.
Masky is the strict enforcer around here, with Hoody following his lead.
And speaking of Masky, he's the one you don't want to mess with. Seriously, he can land one punch, and you might end up meeting your maker. The guy's built like a tank!
Hoody, on the other hand, is the brainiac of the group, no doubt about it.
Now, Kate, she's more of a “Please don’t fight or… I’ll… I’ll have to give you detention!” type of gal, and she says it all sweet and hushed. She's a real sweetheart, for sure.
When it comes to their feelings about The Operator, everyone but Toby despises the guy. They're all stuck in this situation against their will, and you can see the other proxies cringing at Toby, wondering how he can stand the guy. They're practically facepalming over it.
Oh, and Kate always has to drop “Masky" or “Hoody” in her writings because people tend to dismiss her as too soft-spoken.
In the end, Kate's the peacemaker. If you don't listen to her, she's got a secret weapon: “Masky…?” And you better believe that Masky will show up and make sure you start behaving, his own, uh, brutal way. Hoody's hardly ever seen in Jack's infirmary, probably because he's always on the lookout and careful. Toby, on the other hand, practically lives there. Masky doesn't show up much either. Kate's usually trailing behind Toby; she tends to get roughed up quite a bit on missions. Poor Kate, honestly.
When all four of them are out on a mission, they work together like a well-oiled machine. They're seriously impressive! But once the mission's done, it's like a middle-finger throwing contest between them.
Even though Toby is all in for The Operator, The Operator totally plays favorites with Masky and Hoody.

As those at Tread Tuning know, on the last Monday of every month I announce who wins the coveted “Employee of the Month” award. This one’s going online because I have something important to say and I think everyone should hear it.
@mitch-petrol, you are the Second Best mechanic at Tread’s Tuning. I need you to know that second place isn’t losing, and that I am not your rival. I am your boss and mentor, I have more than a decade of experience that you don’t have yet. Despite that, you’re Almost as good as I am at most things around the garage, you already act as a mentor to your fellow employees, and you are a loyal and dedicated member of our team. You’re also only 20 years old. When I was your age, I was wasting my time in college on a full ride scholarship with no idea what my future would look like beyond that. You’re still learning, but you have great promise and have already grown so much in the 3 years I’ve known you. And while I can’t say I’m thrilled with your off the clock conduct this month, it made me realize that I haven’t been showing you how much you are valued here. Mitch, there is no one else I would trust to watch the shop alone, and no one else I could think of ever replacing you.
So, even though I am hands down the Best employee at Tread’s Tuning... today I name Mitch Petrol as our June Employee of the Month!

Summary: A late night in the ministry after curfew let’s you meet & befriend the man your father consider his biggest threat…
Pairing: Cardinal Copia x (female) Reader
Warnings: Age gap (not really spoken about but mentioned), minor swearing, eventually will contain smut in future chapters, mentions of death, not proof-read! Will have more warnings in future chapters but as this is the first one, it won’t have a lot to worry about!
Words: ≈2k(?)
A/N: My first ever full length story! As it’s my first one (I post) I am asking to be nice as I’m a bit nervous lol! This story will be a kinda forbidden love / Romeo and Juliet-situation but it’s a bit different I suppose! Enjoy!
———————————————————————
Being the only child to one of the higher ups in ‘The United Clergy Of Ghost’ meant two things. One, you had a first-class ticket straight to enroll in the academy to become a prime member of the church from the day you were put on this Earth. Secondly, everyone knew your name and whom your parents were, living up to your name was more than stressful to you. All these expectations of what people assumed or wished from you were piling up and this meant a lot of jealousy as well where certain people in your class said you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth and had no actual talent other than your name to be giving you the status you had. You heard the whispers, despite people trying to hide it behind your back, and fuck… it hurt.
As you were growing up in the clergy, you had witnessed papas come and go, the Emeritus family name passing from son after son. You didn’t know the people themselves, perhaps a given smile or look every once in a while in the corridors of the ministry, but other than that? You were probably only seen as nothing but a child of Satan just like everyone else, one of the many in the crowd. Just like ants in a stack, a number instead of a face.
One day the news started to spread though, a new man joining the higher ups of the ministry, the Cardinal you had been hearing of. Your father had spoken nothing but highly of the man, claiming he had the second most employee of the month awards, with your father being the number one. You had seen Cardinal a few times and perhaps given a smile in the corridor just like you had with the Emeritus-family, so you couldn’t exactly say much words of your impression of yhe Cardinal, except perhaps the fact that he had been quite strange in people’s eyes. Words spreading like hay fire that Cardinal Copia was a strange man and some people, including your own father, wasn’t too fond of the man. So they weren’t too pleased when he was chosen by Sister Imperator to join them in the council. You knew the council would choose a new heir to the Papa role somewhat soon, as Papa Terzo was getting slowly down from his reign and Papa Nihil was out of progeny from way back. This meant for the first time in a very… very long time, the ministry were to choose a new family, one from the Council. This was a role your father was more than keen to have, actually, he craved it.
A new era would start weather or not you wished for it, you didn’t wanna become the heir to the throne, and yet your father was one of the most spoken of candidates to the job, along with Cardinal Copia.
One night, when the moonlight shined through the windows of the ministry and you were in only your nightgown as you tippy toed onto the stone cold floor, praying to Satan that no one would see you in this state, knowing damn well it was way past your bedtime. Despite being an adult, the rules were strict and no one was to leave their rooms after 11pm on any given workday. You knew if just one ghoul happened to pass you, you would be caught and you would be in big trouble, however you had woken up and you just needed some sort of air, feeling like the walls in your bedroom was suffocating you.
As you rounded the corner on your way to the kitchen, perhaps to find a snack or something to drink, you heard a squeaking sounds which made you instantly, look up, and there he was… that Cardinal.
Your heart began to pound, as he looked at you in shock just as much as you looked at him… you also noticed what that sound was, in his leather covered hands was a small tiny mouse, who was eating a tiny square of cheese that the Cardinal was feeding the little creature.
“My apologise, Sorella, please don’t tell Sister Imperator that I… Wait, why are you up at this hour?” Cardinal spoke up, looking surprised at you. “Don’t you know there is a curfew?”
“I am aware of the curfew, Cardinal, but I won’t tell a soul if you don’t” you answered, looking down at the mouse in his hand. “May I ask who that little guy is?” You asked with a slight smile, slowly taking a step closer as you wished to see the little creature a bit better, however when you did, Cardinal took a step back himself, as if he were to protect the little mouse from you.
“Don’t worry, Cardinal, I won’t harm him, I just wanna look” you said quickly, scared that you were to upset the man. You knew his power in the ministry, being the one Sister Imperator herself wished to become the next heir, despite all that, and despite the fact that he was probably twice your age, he seemed so… scared, probably worried something would happen to his little friend as you both knew there was a strict ‘no animals allowed at the ministry ground’-rule that could end in being kicked out from the clergy all together, and yet, this man in front of you who were supposed to be one of the people who held the ministry closest, were risking their career within the church for a rat…
Copia looked at you with suspicious eyes, slowly raising a brow as he reached his arms out and showed you the mouse in his hands. The grey coated rat was happily munching the piece of cheese that Copia had given him, having no troubles in the world. There was only one thing though, the poor guy was missing half his tail, only having a stump here it should have continued.
“This is Pascal, I found him trapped in one of the traps in the janitors closet. “I couldn’t just leave him, I knew if I left him he would have a certain death by the morning when someone found him and I could never do that to him” the Cardinal said as he looked down at his new friend. “Sadly he lost his tail but I gave him some cheese I found in the kitchen”
“That’s so kind of you, Cardinal, Pascal seems adorable” you said gently as you slowly reached out and petted the tiny creatures head. You couldn’t help yourself but to smile gently, and Copia noticed that. Your smile was genuine, not faked like those half-hearted smiled he had received from the other clergy members ever since he became a part of the council, and that made him smile too.
Cardinal wouldn’t lie, he didn’t know exactly who you were, he knew just as everyone else that the man running against him to become the next papa had a child who should be in their 20s by now, but he couldn’t possibly know that was you. He had seen you every once in a while in the corridor but nothing much else than that, he didn’t even know your name.
Perhaps if he did, he wouldn’t have done what he did next.
“Sorella, Pascal seems to be liking you, if you want, do you wish to hold him?” He asked, smiling a bit awkwardly to you. You gave him a quick nod and smiled even bigger as Copia carefully handed you the rat. When you held the little guy in your hand, your eyes were big with a big smile on your lips from ear to ear at that point.
“Oh Cardinal! He is the cutest, I adore him already!” You said, looking up at Copia.
“I know, isn’t he? But please, keep him a secret, just between us two, if someone finds out he would be thrown out to die on the streets” he said with a begging tone, carefully taking the rat from your hands again, holding his new pet close to his chest where his upside down cross was hanging.
“I swear on Satan himself, your secret is safe with me, Cardinal” you said gently, brushing your hands on your pyjama pants after you no longer held the rat. “I won’t tell a soul”
“Thank you, Sorella, but I must ask, what’s your name?”
“Oh, it’s (y/n), a pleasure to finally speak to you, Cardinal” you said and held out your hand for him to shake, you saw how the Cardinal hesitated before slowly grabbing your hand, giving it a firm shake.
“A pleasure to meet you, (y/n), I hope this is one of our many little chats together for the future”
“Indeed”

:D Ahhh, prompt prompt prompt - how about a mash up, vampires meet kastle?? :D
She found out about it purely by chance. Some part of her had been thinking of life in Vermont that day, the skies in New York the same sheet metal grey as the dreariest of days in Fagan Corners. Her thoughts drifted enough for her to battle with her phone in a losing effort that ended with her searching the surprisingly online tiny local paper. She’d trawled through the articles, smiling at the news of 4H Club awards and greased pig races. There was a comfort in these reminders of her small town history, and when she hit the obituaries section she continued out of morbid curiosity. Was old Mrs. Wilkie still alive? Stern in her housecoat, fuzzy slippers, and ever-present broom like some modern-aged witch? How about the bank president who had tried to buy coke from her? Sure, it was a college town, but it was also a small town and most people didn’t ever get out. She had certainly felt trapped.
“Former Penny’s Place owner Paxton Page…” The words crept into her brain slowly, as if reluctant to enter. She dropped her phone, her hand rising to stifle the sharp intake of breath.
Dad.
Things willfully ignored; things pushed back, hidden, and thought drowned rose to the surface, crested, and broke. She slid down to the floor, her hand shaking and still cupped over her mouth as if to hold it all in.
--------------
The drive was a long one and she went alone with her thoughts. She knew Foggy would have dropped everything to come along, and part of her still wished she’d asked, but…. this was better. She’d face this alone rather than explaining, though she owed Foggy the truth soon. She just wasn’t…she wanted a little more time, ok? From Kevin to Allied to almost dying in a prison to Fisk to now, Karen hadn’t had much good in her life, and Foggy and Matt, when he was tempered by apologies and guilt, were good.
Sometimes your heart makes judgments that aren’t logical, fueled by something just on the edge of your vision, just out of reach. In hindsight it’s why she latched on to them so quickly, something in her recognizing something in them. Enough to have her paying Matt’s bills when he’d vanished for months, enough to have her jumping right in as a strangely happy unpaid employee of Murdock and Nelson. Her heart panged at the memory of those first days, replete with casseroles and more flan than she could possibly eat in a week. Stretching the dollars to keep them afloat, the sound of Matt’s text to speech software and Foggy’s muffled curses whenever he tried to fill out forms on the ancient typewriter and failed miserably.
A flash of brake lights ahead jolted her out of her reverie and into the present, barrelling down the highway directly to a place she’d been forced to leave behind. Dad.
One hand gripped the wheel tighter, to prevent the shake, and the other hit the console in frustrated grief. Her phone jostled in its cubby from the motion and she wet her lips as she glanced at the screen, a picture of her and Foggy at Rosie’s, making bunny ears over what they’d thought was Matt’s oblivious face. Heh. She still loved it. If anything it made her realize that Matt had loved it too.
Damn it. “Call Foggy”
“Mmpf? Karen?” His voice sounded far away, muffled.
“Did i wake you?”
“Yes but it’s ok because apparently,” she heard the sheets rustle, “ I am lying in a puddle of my own drool and it’s clearly time to flip.”
Karen smiled, her cheeks stinging with the stretch of it. “Late night at Rosie’s?”
“I’ll have you know I also frequent high class establishments.” A pause. “But then I went to Rosie’s. We missed you there.” His voice was losing the grittiness of sleep and she could tell he must be upright now, imagined his hair stuck up in 10 different directions like it did after a face first desk nap.
“Yeah I uh, I went to bed early. I’m driving to Vermont.”
“What’s in Vermont?” Karen could hear the subtle eagerness in his voice and her heart panged with it. She really hadn’t told them much about her life, and she vowed to change it.
“Grew up there. Needed to take care of some family stuff.” She’d failed her first chance to open up, clearly, and tried to make it less obvious. “Dumb paperwork!” Even though she was driving she closed her eyes for a brief moment from the awkwardness of it.
Foggy was quiet for a moment, his voice soft when he spoke. “Well be safe, Karen. You back soon?”
“Yeah.” Her throat was closing up and she had to end the call soon. “Just, let’s hang out when I get back? Sunday maybe?”
“Of course.” Still soft, still accepting. Still more than she deserved.
----------------------------------------------
The town was bright with spring green as her old Cherokee rumbled onto Main Street. She passed the hardware store, sun-faded display from her childhood still advertising weedkiller, the old barrel she’d always tried to climb on top of anchoring the door open. Many shops were closed, and she saw that most of them had town curfew signs plastered in the windows. When had that started up, she wondered.
She wasn’t immune to nostalgia, obviously, or she’d never… her heart clenched with the reality of what she was here for, and she turned on Sycamore, right on Laurel, her blinker clacking loudly. There were a lot of church signs up, not something she remembered from last time she was here. Not…not signs saying “St Luke’s Lutheran Church” either, these were like that weird stretch of road Marcie had talked about on I-70 outside Kansas, where every other billboard was Hellfire and Brimstone.
THE DEVIL WILL TAKE YOU
FAGAN CORNERS IS DAMNED
She thought it strange, but when she crested the hill the diner was a shock piled on top of another. The sign was bright and clean, Sue’s Vittles, and she felt the rage rise up in her, an urge to tear it down, before she came to her senses. It wouldn’t just… have sat there forever. The town had to move on. She wondered when her dad had lost it, and how far in debt he’d taken Penny's Place. She wondered if she could have saved it.
She knew she could have, if he’d let her.
The return home tour continued on, her eyes rimmed with red now, wet with tears both shed and not. She had never felt so alone in her life. She drove three miles in the wrong direction to avoid the bridge and tried to think of what she was doing here even as she pulled into the town cemetery. She knew he’d be buried next to mom, and pulled a small bouquet of peonies out of the passenger seat as the engine settled, ticking.
There was a new stone next to her moms, and she knelt, tracing the letters with her fingers. Paxton Page. She remembered her and Kevin making fun, popping the syllables, “Paxton and Penny Page” before they’d dissolve into giggles. Everything she thought of made her heart ache.
She sat there for hours, talking to her mom, saying what she couldn’t say to her dad. That she’d thought herself beyond redemption until Father Lantom had gotten through to her, that she still did, sometimes. She told her mom about Foggy and Matt, and then she told her about Frank. God, she’d needed this. She knew her mom would understand, more than anyone, about seeing through to the heart of people. She wondered where Frank was, wished she knew, wished she had some way of contacting him. Despite their last meeting and her anger towards him, she would never let go, not really.
“Sometimes, just someone makes you feel safe, at least when you’re with them. And then when you’re not… I don’t know.” She shifted, sitting back on her haunches and idly rubbing a peony petal between her fingers.
“Me and Frank. Wrong place, wrong time, maybe that’s what it will always be for us.” She said, staring at her mother’s name, carved in stone.
The gravestone stared back, mute, as the light dimmed and she ached with the silence. Evening fell quick in this neck of the woods, without the conflagration of light that made up the city. She shivered in the fall of the spring evening, her throat aching with tears spent but feeling better in the spending of them.
She leaned over the gravestones one last time, peonies settled at the base, and said goodbye.
Gathering her things she startled at the sound of a footfall, the first time she’d heard any noise since she’d settled in. It was hard to see in the fading light, but the man standing at the hood of her car looked like no one she knew, though she waved anyway, small town and all. He didn’t wave back and she shrugged and rounded the back of her car, warily eyeing him as she slipped behind the wheel, the curfew signs flashing in her mind.
Was there some sort of crime ring? Her brain ticked as she started her engine and the man stepped away from the Jeep, a dark slick of a smile caught in the headlights. Karen felt a frisson of fear and pulled away back onto the gravel, eyes in the rearview as she turned down the lanes that led to -
A closed gate, though she remembered from illicit midnights with friends that it was like a fence gate, unbolted and something she could lift and swing out. Karen reached into her purse and felt the comforting weight of her gun slip into her palm. The man wasn’t in her rearview mirror, but it was too dark to tell where he was. She put the Jeep in park and left it running, sliding quickly out of the seat and lifting the gate latch, spinning around and slipping her other hand up to grip the gun two-handed. It was no use, the darkness was complete, no lights to break up the dim beyond the Jeep's headlights, and she rounded the vehicle, shoulders tense, her mind racing, her -
A hand across her mouth, an arm across her chest, pulling her arms down and pointing the gun at the ground. She screamed behind the clamped hand, stamped her foot where she thought the man’s instep would be, snaked a hand up and smashed her elbow backward, hearing a satisfying grunt as the blow landed. She spun away from the arm banded across her middle, trying to transfer the gun to her now free hand, but he was too fast. Her wrist wrenched back, pain shooting up it, the gun falling to the gravel below.
She could see him now, his hair dark, unkempt, his face attractive if it weren’t for the gleam of satisfaction in his gaze, if not for the - oh god oh god she’d known they were real Matt and Foggy had made fun of her but she’d known it and oh god she fought she kept fighting she had to escape, her arms thrashing, trying to duck and use his weight against him, but nothing shook that iron bar of an arm loose from her chest and the smile descended and with it those fangs, sharp and oh god she closed her eyes she let them slip closed because maybe this was redemption, this was closure, maybe this was…
----------------------------------------
ONE MONTH LATER
The city reeked of hot dogs. Hot dogs approaching rancid as the last of the summer sun baked the scent of an overturned delivery truck’s escapees into the street. Frank’s nose wrinkled with the stench as he ducked into an alleyway. The smell of piss here wasn’t much better, but Frank wasn’t here to avoid smells, knocking hard on an unmarked door. He waited, knocked again, heard an irritated voice shout back at him, accent thick even through the door.
“Don’t expect a delivery til -”
Frank lodged his foot in before the man could pull the door closed, stepping in and locking the man in a headlock with an athlete’s grace.
“Get the fuck off -”
“Shut the fuck up.” Frank squeezed tighter, feeling the trachea beneath his arm.
The man floundered feebly, choked gasps ragged as he lost the air to function. Frank maneuvered him into an office close to the door, pulling out some duct tape and lashing him to the chair, gagging him for good measure.
The warehouse would be empty this late in the day - Frank had been monitoring it for weeks. Still, he let the captive’s head loll as Frank pushed out of the office and scanned the warehouse, moving low to the ground in a room clearing pattern ingrained into his bones. Clear. He checked the warehouse door, ensuring it was locked, and placed a nearby bucket of loose hardware on the lip of the door’s bottom edge, advance warning should someone decide to open it.
He circled back through the warehouse, eyes still darting about, up to the loft, behind the stacked crates, his footsteps less than a whisper on the concrete as he circled back to the office, unfolding a chair and straddling it, arms propped on the headrest, waiting for the man to awaken.
He did with a start, his eyes bulging and curses muffled behind the tape.
“I’m just here for a few questions Aron,” Frank said, watching as the man’s eyes widened at the use of his name. “Word on the street is that your little Albanian enterprise here is bigger than Rudaj ever was,” Frank said. “Something about a secret weapon, huh?”
Aron’s eyes narrowed. You didn’t live long if you weren’t able to face a little questioning, and something in Frank’s demeanor told him that Aron held all the cards here. Frank needed to flip the program.
He looked up, spotted the beam he’d seen in blueprints, and rummaged through his bag for some rope, tossing it over the beam before knotting one end through a set of shelves and forming a noose in the other. He slipped it around Aron's neck, patting the man on the cheek with a smile, before hoisting the man up to his feet, looping the slack in the shelves.
He removed the tape at his mouth then, deftly avoiding the spit and rolling his eyes at Aaron’s Balkan curses. “So what can you tell me?”
Silence, and once again a discomfiting smile spread across Aron’s face. Frank hated when they were difficult. He pulled the rope, reknotted it. Aron's back was rigid now, spine stretched as far as it could to lessen the pressure, breath harsh in the closed space of the office.
“If you don’t already know,” Aron smiled despite his struggle to breathe, “There’s no harm in telling you. You’ll be dead within a matter of hours.”
“Yeh? Good to know.”
“Even if you are the Punisher.” A ragged breath. “Yes your reputation precedes you. It also means nothing.”
Aron’s idle threats were wearing thin. “Okay.” A tug at the rope.
“Superhumans.” Aron rattled out. “Stronger than you. Faster than you.” His eyes glittered. “They’ll drain you dry.” He coughed, and Frank caught what it was trying to cover. A shift in the eyes to a point over his shoulder. Frank ducked and rolled and heard the swish of air above his head, shot back with an elbow and caught air himself. A faint footfall, a flap of fabric, where the fuck was this guy?
Fast. Too fast. Impossibly fast, Frank thought as he was thrown out of the room, his head cracking on the wall outside. He shook it off even as he was moving, realizing he needed to put distance between him and the threat. He vaulted into the main warehouse, analyzing the terrain, potential weapons. Superhuman. Drain me dry, huh? He knew he had only seconds, ducked behind a crate and backed against a wall where pallets stood leaning. A flash of movement and Frank heard laughter as the heel of a hand smashed against his ribs. Broken, he had a moment to consider while the other hand closed around his throat.. Pain and rage clouded his vision and he knew he had one chance, one chance or it was all over.
In hindsight he’d probably wonder if it was worth the choice, but for now survival instincts kicked in and he cracked a plank off the pallet behind him and brought it up with all of his strength, trying not to breathe in to avoid the pain dulling the blow. His assailant’s grip on his throat proved his downfall, removing the advantage of speed. The plank hit its mark, the adrenaline and training allow the jagged edges to pierce through skin and muscle, through ribs. A high-pitched keening, terrible in its inhuman sound, issued from the assailant’s throat, and Frank watched features swim in and out of view. Pale skin, a jagged scar cutting across a pair of thinned lips. A mouth split in pain, and there, there - he couldn’t be sure but he also knew it couldn’t be anything else - incisors long and sharp.
The hand tightened on his throat briefly, muscles trying to continue past the ceasing of life, and the vampire in front of him dropped to the floor, wheedling noise still issuing from its throat, fading now with the dying of light in his eyes. The eyes, Frank thought, were the worst. Sclera shot through with red, but so human. Equal in death, the light gone. He fought his failing consciousness, he needed to get out of here before more showed up. He knew that face. Knew him from the papers, when he was human. The Albanians leg up on gang activities needed no more explanation than this, he thought as every inhale felt like ground glass in his bruised throat, his chest.
He stumbled back towards the office, lurched through the doorway to the shocked face of the mobster who still stood, throat noosed. Frank tugged at the rope anchored to the shelving and looped it a few more times with the rest of his strength, ignoring Aron’s choked breaths and gasps.
--------------------
Lana almost killed him when he returned. The pit bull / boxer mix hadn’t yet learned to not jump up, and her paws on his chest earned a pained grunt.
“Fuck. Down, Lana. I need you to be a good girl, please.” She tilted her head at him, boxer jowls flopping. He couldn’t help smiling through his pain. Pushing past her into the small kitchen, he grabbed a steak out of the freezer and some aspirin and eased himself down on the couch, steak pressed against his ribs.
This was as close to home as he’d had in a long while, this warehouse unit in Queens. Secure enough with Micro’s help - he still couldn’t call him David. David was for the married guy, with kids, that Frank shouldn’t be bothering. The separation helped. His chest panged again, but not from pain this time, as he thought of those he’d lost in his unceasing war. Curtis had let him go. David wanted nothing to do with him. Karen -
Karen had disappeared off the face of the earth a month ago and it was driving him crazy. If he knew where she was, if he just knew, then she was safe. He pulled his phone out of his pocket with a grimace as Lana’s tail thwacked against the couch cushions, her brows alternating as she looked up at Frank, face nestled in her paws.
He found her last byline - a little over a month ago - a report on the growing presence of Eastern European crime families, actually. It…didn’t seem enough of a report for her to be targeted but who knows what she had gotten into. He knew her, she was persistent beyond what was safe. Karen wouldn’t let go.
If he was being honest with himself, he didn’t want her to, despite his claims otherwise.
So where was she? He slid a palm down his face, frustrated.
He checked his sources, found nothing. Reaching over his shoulder with difficulty - you forget that the simplest of actions is immeasurably harder when you’ve got a broken rib - he flipped on the police scanner. He and Lana listened for news of vampires, caught no mentions, nothing unexplained. The warehouse he’d invaded was off the radar, so he had some time before that would be circling around the airwaves, at least police ones. The steak was partially thawed now, so he tossed it in the dog bowl where Lana inhaled it as if it were her only meal in weeks.
Where was she?
-----
TWO WEEKS LATER
The Albanians were still expanding their empire, despite the setback at the warehouse. Frank wondered how many vampires there were. It clearly wasn’t an epidemic, which he’d feared initially but understood now - hard to keep power when you’re just spreading the source of that power around. Frank was on the streets, ribs starting to heal but deep breaths still causing sharp twists. He knew he needed more time. He also knew he didn’t have it.
He had to find her, and so he was here in Hell’s Kitchen, eyeing the neon Rosie’s sign as he approached, it flickered Ro ie' tonight, the esses flickering in and out. He didn’t want Red catching him out here, instead hoping his friend would be the first to leave. It was a flip of the coin whether Murdock would find a way to turn him in, that high-and-mighty morality of his a ticking time bomb, Frank thought.
His eyes shifted from the flickering sign as a voice called out.
“Spare some change?”
That voice...he'd know it anywhere. “You’re alive, oh god I thought -”
Karen laughed, blanket wrapped over her telltale locks, ball cap pulled low over her brow. “Nice to see you too, Frank.” She reached out a hand, as if to take change from him, and pressed a folded paper into his grip. He held on a beat too long, her grip cold in his own, taking in the details of her face, what he could anyway. He ducked down to catch her eyes and her own darted away.
“Not now, ok?”
He nodded and walked away, waiting until he was back in the warehouse to open the paper. The smile spread unbidden across his face.
Grand Ferry Park. You know where. 1 hour.
She sure had a sense of drama, he thought, thinking of a time long past, jokes of hipsters and her hair a bright flag in the breeze off the water. He thought of the softness of her cheek, and when he took a deep breath this time he didn’t even notice the pain.
-----------------
Lana was losing her mind, and not in a good way. He’d brought her with him, knowing Karen loved dogs, but she was having none of this meeting. This sweetheart of a dog had her hackles raised, growl low and deep as Karen put up her hands and squeezed her eyes shut, as if pained.
“What is wrong with you, girl?” He knelt down beside Lana, hand tight at her collar and glancing up apologetically at Karen. “Sorry, she’s the calmest dog usually, I thought you might like to see her.”
Karen slowly lowered to the ground, her hand held out. “Do you have a treat I can give her? Maybe that will help.”
“Yeh, sure.” He tossed her a packet from his bag and she opened it, shaking out some near where she knelt. Lana licked her chops but still growled low in her throat, if a bit more of a confused growl.
“Here, what’s her name?” A glance up at Frank as he responded. He noticed her hand shaking. “Lana, sweet girl. Got a treat for you!”
Frank encouraged Lana when she looked up at him, her expression almost hilariously human and clearly saying “you trust this lady??” The dog edged forward, tentative, and snatched the treat from the ground where Karen had placed it, backing up but calming her growl.
“Well, progress at least.”
Her smile was just as he’d remembered.
“Where have you been, Karen?”
A flash in her eyes. “Didn’t know you kept tabs on me, Frank. You seemed pretty clear about me staying away.”
It hit him like a blow he deserved, and he fought for a response and lost. There was nothing he could say, he knew that, but he still wanted to try. It came to him in as he saw her eyes damp and hard, but still not hiding the hope behind them.
“I’ll always want you to be safe, Karen.”
She scoffed at that and stood up. “It’s a bit late for that.”
“What, what is it, what happened to you? Do I need to punch Red’s light’s out?”
Karen laughed at this, bitter and so unlike her it closed his throat. He did this.
“Just…stop, Frank. I need you to listen.” A barge horn sounded in the distance as if to punctuate her words and her brows eased, just a little, at the humor of it. “I’m…” She stepped closer, Lana alert at the motion, and cupped his face in a hand. “I know the Albanians are after you. The vampire you killed was one of their sires from the old country. I don’t even - Only you, Frank. Older vampires are so strong, you had a one in a million chance.” She shook her head at this, as if still disbelieving.
“How do you know?” he asked, leaning into her touch, cold yet still a comfort. He searched her eyes, gripped Lana’s collar a little tighter.
“I know, because I’m one of them.”
He tore away from her, the motion and the tension in him sending Lana into a fit of barking, her muzzle flecked with spittle. He couldn’t - he heard that high-pitched keen in his head, tried to reconcile it with the expression on Karen’s face. He pulled his Beretta out, trained it on Karen’s anguished face, looked around for bystanders. He backed away towards the railing bracketing the East River. If he needed to he’d escape in the water. But Lana…
He’d let down his guard, bringing her here. Letting himself dream and hope and wish and here was Karen and goddamn she looked beautiful, her eyes bright and hair streaming in the wind off the river and he could not reconcile the pieces.
His voice was a shadow of itself when it rasped from his mouth. “Explain, Karen. Tell me you’re not a monster. Tell me -” he stopped, unable to say more.
He saw her eyes close and the resoluteness stiffen her spine. Hope bloomed in his chest. She…she was still her. Her stubbornness, her implacable will.
“I’m not a monster, in the same way you aren’t.”
He worked his jaw, thinking, eyes casting about, settling on anything but her now. Her words were ones he’d normally deny in his heart, but it seemed the stakes had shifted, and his gut reactions fell flat in the face of the fact that Karen Page was here, and she was a vampire.
“Guess that’s why Lana’s losing her mind,” he said finally.
Karen laughed at that and goddamn if it still didn’t make his heart flip with the sound. What was wrong with him.
“Look I -” she started, uncertain. “I was bitten a month ago in Vermont.” She noticed his quizzical expression. “My Dad, he…I saw his obituary in the paper, so I drove up there. The town was riddled with vamps, some offshoot of the Albanians taking root in Fagan Corners of all places. They’ve locked it down since, but lucky for me!” She lifted her hands, her tone mocking. “Not my favorite trip ever. One star.” She joked, and cast her eyes down when it fell flat.
“Came back and have been feeding off criminals. Not like they're hard to find in this town. Frank -” She caught his gaze in her own. “I wanted to see you, wanted to see you and…I don't think anything can stop them, not anything human." She stopped, searched his eyes.
He wasn’t sure if she found what she was looking for but somehow knew what her next words would be all the same. Still, he let the pause linger. It was a moment, one to let go in. If there was anyone he trusted, it was her, goddamn, and maybe...maybe it was finally time to show that.
She inhaled then, and he idly wondered if that was force of habit or if vampires needed oxygen. He breathed a breath of his own, rib aching with the effort, and drew closer, sliding his hand into the silk of her hair, fingers sifting through it. He looked at her then, full on, not letting his gaze wander, not letting himself look away. He nodded then, an answer to the questions in her eyes, and bared his neck to her.
