settled once again after her turn with diego, alethea knelt toward the center of the circle to spin the bottle. her eyes briefly glanced across the surprisingly large group as she gave it a spin. settled back on her heels, her gaze was focused solely on the way it spun, trying not to think of who she wanted it to be, or who it could be. almost as if she thought of a name the worst case scenario would happen - and then with a satisfying crinkle of the glass against the wood it paused. following its barrel she was surprised, and pleased, to see monty’s face on the other side of it. ignoring any glances from others, of which she knew there was a least a couple, alethea gave monty a wide smile and moved to standing, hands brushing over their dress and knees as they stepped away from the circle. instinctively, or maybe because they wanted to, their hand reached out for his. 

there wasn’t much that alethea could think to say except for a small ‘hey’, as they made their way toward the closet, feeling the eyes of everyone watching. slipping in, they moved to lean against the back of the closet as monty closed the door. “soo...” she drug out the word, unable to drop the silly little smile as they looked up at him. “havin’ a good night monty?”

hi<33 basically on vday 2021 we all planned to throw destiel a wedding at the roadhouse and like leading up it the spn actors who play ellen and ash started posting teasing tweets role playing as their characters and seeming to be on board with the planning of the wedding. saying stuff like they were setting up the roadhouse for a big celebration. then on vday we got deancas wedding trending over everything, it was huge event, and then suddenly the ellen and ash actors turned on us >:( and changed their tune and were like "wedding ? what wedding? we're just throwing a vday party at the roadhouse. what is destiel?" so we got queerbaited by spn again lmaoooo. but anyways fuck themmm. oh yea and the whole time the ash actor was using the hype and attention of the wedding to promote some crystal necklaces he made ?? idk it was weird. but anyways so, on tumblr, we were celebrating, having a grand ol' time. making edits, art, amvs, fics, y'know, as we do. and the day before we celebrated their joint bachelors party. and after we celebrated their honeymoon. and it was just so nice and what they deserve<3 and so now every year we celebrate their wedding anniversary<333

John was pretty militant (deliberate word choice there lol) about the boys' birthdays because that was something he got obsessed with acknowledging, like the four things that he marked off every year with: two birthdays, Mary's death, his wedding anniversary. He seemed fairly unanchored about everything else (he never mentions his own birthday unless it's about the boys) and it's not like he could properly even do anything to celebrate the boys' birthdays every year, but if he wrote it down in his journal that counted as something.

I don't think John was very good at offering praise (I don't think it was a big part of his own growing up so it never occurred to him that he should maybe ... do that) and he was under the misconception that since his boys were force-grown, they'd interpret his behaviour however he needed them to. As implied love and praise and support and attention. Which they could not, because they were children! Now and again when he had the energy/time/opportunity to make a fuss over Dean for his birthdays he'd do it (there was mention of a fairly normal Chuck E. Cheese party for Dean once), and he'd put his whole pussy into it, but I think John lost his capacity to hold onto or want to make happy memories, so it wouldn't mean much to him.

It would mean a lot to Dean, though, of course, because everything means a lot to Dean. Once again he served as the repository of Winchester Family Happiness, both as archivist and maker, so he'd do things like annual holidays. Birthdays and death dates and anniversaries, Dad had covered, so Dean's responsibility was doing Easter and Thanksgiving and Christmas (and probably once they started fucking, a tentative Valentines' Day that John was surprisingly receptive towards because Mary thought VDay was stupid and cheesy unless it came in horror movie form, but John always secretly thought it was nice).

BUT YEAH John wouldn't stop Dean from finding ways to do holiday celebrations, and if there was nothing immediately preoccupying him then he'd enjoy them too and Dean would be brimming with pleasure at having given them something they could revisit and feel good about. They don't have photo albums or family & friends to carry these memories, so it's all imprinted in Dean's mind to be hauled out later, whenever needed.

I think that kind of mentality also made celebrating stuff for Dean harder as Dean got older, because what he'd been desperate for as a child got more complicated. He wanted the love and attention, naturally, but attention that involved anybody other than Dad and Sammy started to become excruciating and borderline angering. Who are all these dopes telling him happy birthday? What the fuck do they know about him, or what makes him happy, or anything? Some people when they set themselves up as arbiter of making other people happy, and it becomes part of how they identify, start to get dissatisfied and resentful of other happy-makers and I feel that would be Dean with anyone who's not a Winchester. Mostly because Sam and John don't try to make him happy using the same tactics that Dean uses, so his role in the family is firmly cemented and singular. It all gets more haphazard and fraught as Sam and Dean get older.

The Valentine's Day stuff sticks, though. John gets Dean whatever candy he can find that's shaped like hearts, and Dean fluffs pillows and does over-the-top silly shit that's not too girly and toes the line of ridiculous, so neither of them feels too weird about it, like one time he puts red food colouring in their beer, and another time when he eats all the chocolate hearts he saves the pink-and-red foil and wraps up a bunch of bullets in it to give back to John, dumb things like that to get a chuckle and some smiley kisses out've the old man.

have you ever detailed the timeline of cmi before? like how long since the mysterious frat party to the beginning of their fake dating deal to now? i feel like you may have left some of these details in the story, but i've been having a hard time putting it all together in my head (their sweetness is distracting me😭)

LOL, their sweetness indeed 😭 yeah, there are hints scattered throughout the chapters, but it's all hard to remember.. good timing tbh, bc i even made a timeline just 2 days ago. so here goes!

last summer: frat party :)))

last fall: semester starts, they share a class. hook up at some point.

last december: new year's eve party. already fwb/"cmi: not enough"

this february: vday/"cmi: undying roses"

june: fake dating deal and graduation. "cmi1"—"cmi: layers"

july: jk is gone except for the last week of july. "cmi: lights", partly "cmi: the canvas"

first 1½ weeks of august: body painting, fight with her mom, frat party where they meet nara, confession, break up. "cmi: the canvas" + "cmi: silhouettes"

I loved your analysis of Terri Porter as a character and her relationship with Gina and potential relationship with Ricky. Just wanted to ask if you had any idea about the Valentine's Day chocolates. Because even if Terri and Ricky have not officially met before, the implication seems to be that they have had a conversation centred around Gina before 4×07. At a period of time that Terri now knows Gina was not very happy during because of this very boy. Do you think that interaction could have accounted for the obvious tension between them in Gina's bedroom? Apart from everything else.

So the only info we have regarding Ricky and Terri’s possible connection in the chocolates ordeal is:

The way I kinda see it? If we’re being technically technical, there isn’t actually explicit implication that she’s had a conversation with Ricky before, much less about getting Gina chocolates. All she mentions is what’s in the above screenshot text message, and though you could potentially connect the two given the timeline of events (and I know I and many others did back in the day), it’s still not confirmed. Could still be anything that allowed her to find a way to send it last minute. We have the screenshot of the old script idea which did confirm it, but the thing is, like the hoco car scene no-one-saw-it-coming smooch that got scrapped and Jennzara talking in the middle of LYF and I’m sure countless other early scripts, this Ricky confession was scrapped too. So for all intents and purposes, Ricky never canonically interacted with Gina’s mom until the Halloween party in s4.

If they’d ever had any kind of communication prior to s4 encounters, we wouldn’t have gotten this brutal ass scene:

Gina introduces him for the first time, and the name drop doesn’t spark any recognition on Terri’s face at all. Plus, Ricky nods after Gina says “I don’t think you two have ever met”. So I don’t think they’ve interacted at all before.

Do you think that interaction could have accounted for the obvious tension between them in Gina’s bedroom?

(As in… like most moms wouldn’t be, Terri wasn’t pleased that Ricky’s girlfriend having ass got her daughter chocolates on VDay the way a boyfriend would lmao?)

I have 3 overall thoughts:

1) I personally don’t think it was a factor. When Gina tells her mom about the last several months and what went down, at the time, she herself still doesn’t even know Ricky gave her the chocolates so Terri wouldn’t know that Ricky was involved. Ricky doesn’t show up with the new box until later that evening, so could she have learned that later? Sure, but I don’t think so. My general view is that this potential Ricky/Terri collab is a plot hole Tim just wants us to forget about and move on from lol, evidenced by Ricky just dropping the box of chocolates on the ground and it never being addressed directly. Seems like one of those things that were scrapped or changed in scripts, but previous occurrences/dialogue etc was not accounted for to corroborate this adjustment. (For example, Kourtney saying Ricky and Nini met in the 7th grade, a dialogue point that is then later confused by them being revealed as childhood friends from a young age at the end of the season).

2) They could still have collab’ed. In which case, the argument now becomes how to prove that she did recognise Ricky’s name which is a little harder. But in that case, if the collab is canon, I would choose as possible evidence the fact that Terri kind of goes from recoiling when Ricky taps her arm to addressing him with a "warm" smile (warm for Terri). That maybe she does remember the dear friend who got her daughter chocolates and so he gets “special treatment” with direct interaction instead of the borderline dismissive way she generally acts towards the theatre group. Because in this whole scene, she doesn't look at anyone else in the room at all until right before she leaves and even then it's just a quick glance and smile. But she looks at Ricky straight on lmao, hence "special treatment".

So in that case, yeah, the chocolates might be a factor in her disdain in e7, barring other issues she has with him. Knowing he did the nice gesture for her daughter could also explain why she seems kind of fond of him in that confrontation in Gina’s room despite having barely talked. A 'he may not meet her standards as a boyfriend for her daughter, but he exceeds every expectation for her daughter as a friend and she still is grateful for that' type of thing.

And 3) I headcanon with my sis that Terri actually did send Gina some fancy chocolate package or gift outside of Ricky through some delivery service, but her gift got delivered to the wrong address. It would explain why Terri texted so late at night: she'd checked tracking and seen the package was delivered, but didn't receive a confirmation text from Gina all day and evening that she’d gotten the gift that likely had a card attached. If it had been delivered to the right place, Gina would have gotten two chocolate gifts that night. And with this headcanon, it removes Ricky being involved with Terri’s plan in any capacity, it explains Terri’s last minute gift of chocolates to Gina, keeps Ricky as the sole giver of the box we did see, and keeps the chocolates drama from s2 (Gina thinking it was from her mom and Ricky’s stupid joking about something he really did do), and thus, solves the plot hole lol.

All this to say, that after s4, I do see some part of Terri’s reluctance to accept Ricky as overprotectiveness because he’s hurt Gina in the past, however unintentional, but I don’t think the chocolates play a role. The way everything went down, I don’t personally think we’re supposed to connect Ricky and Terri in the chocolate narrative point anymore, but I could obviously be wrong! Nothing was confirmed so sky’s the limit on whatever we want to imagine.
