Listing no racebending under DNW is fine. But also adding that you don't like Blorbo 1 as his canonical minority ethnicity? Gonna get you a side eye. (Even if canon didn't handle writing that ethnicity well.)

Listing no trans or ace/aro character headcanons can be fine, but when combined with the above?

Having fixed top/bottom preferences is fine. But reiterating it nine (9!) times throughout your list of prompts/likes/DNWs is...excessive.

Repasting your general DNWs at least 3 times and your fandom specific ones twice makes it so much harder to navigate your page (and puts way too much an emphasis on what you don't like vs what you do).

Including likes that don't apply to the event in question (sfw and fluff likes) is overwhelming and makes it harder to parse out what you're looking for from the event.

Having lists of likes and potential prompts that are longer than my computer screen, let alone my phone screen, is also extremely overwhelming.

Preferring fem!sub and male!dom as well as top!alpha and bottom!omega is fine. But not wanting to reference the fact that the person you want to sub/bottom/be raped is canonically larger than the person you want to top/dom is weird.

Like, one or two of these, I tried to defend. Until I read the whole list of what they wanted/didn't want. Way too many little, could be innocent, comments just adding up to a "huh, you're racist and transphobic, aren't you?" feeling.

(Also just rude in how extensive their lists of likes and DNWs are. Isn't it supposed to be just enough information to get someone going and ensure you don't hate the resulting fic?)

I love hugely long requests. If the letter is five thousand words, I will read every one and love it. My rule for myself is to try to write an exchange fic that's at least as long as my letter. I think my longest letter was about 7k, but they're usually more like 2-3k.

No, I don't think it's supposed to be just enough info to get you going. It can be that, or it can be detailed plotbunnies or anything else.

The thing it shouldn't be, though, is extremely negative or trying to railroad the author into one specific story. If there are detailed plotbunnies, there should be a few different ones and some ideas about alternate takes if that exact scenario doesn't appeal to the writer.

I'd definitely look askance at someone not liking the canon ethnicity of a character. Is it ambiguous in some way? That's odd and an annoying constraint on the author who might like canon.

Not wanting trans or ace/aro headcanons is a standard DNW and isn't any more meaningful than "No second person". For me, it's primarily that I don't want unrequested vag (and have in fact changed to just saying that instead of anything about transness), and I'm always asking for shippy stuff where I want the characters' romantic and sexual tastes to line up well by the end of the story. I wouldn't even bother saying any of this in an exchange signup if people weren't always going "Wharrgarbl! You like non-canon gay ships, so why not non-canon trans characters?!?!?!" and the like.

What it sounds like has happened here is that an exchange regular who does the whole annual rotation of exchanges has recycled a lot of their standard letter without updating it enough. The off-topic stuff is part of their default sign up. The repeated DNWs are pretty common from people who think you'll only be reading one section of the letter instead of the whole thing. They're supposed to be helpful instead of repetitive and a slog since you don't have to refer back to a different section. (Whether they actually are in practice is another story.)

This letter doesn't sound that out there other than disliking the canon identity. Reiterating top/bottom preferences in nonconathon makes perfect sense. The thing about character size sounds bad the way you've phrased it but might be meant as "Don't kink on them being bigger". I can see reasons why they'd list something like this for nonconathon.

I haven't read the letter, obviously, but it sounds like the main issues are that it's just not written that well and that you and your friend aren't very familiar with what letters from people in Exchanges Fandom™ sound like. Maybe the vibes are off, but I can't tell from a second hand account.

I also like to think she's the type to collect xenogenders / neopronouns like pokemon cards. ( she totally uses a bunch of cat-based pronouns) ◇ Shortly after the series I think she'd get a little less Boys-Crazy and focus more exploring who she is as a person / her self expression. Absolutely is gonna have a mall goth/emo/scene phase (she's smushing all three of those together into one thing for herself).

Mostly making comics of silly re-tellings of he and Ford's adventures out at Sea (he absolutely shows Dipper and Mabel these if he and Ford video calls them when they're on land) ◇ I'm a transfem Stanley truther. He doesn't really realize/come to terms with it until post-series. I think she'd just grow out her hair and throw it in a pony-tail + use she/he pronouns to transition. She'd still use the name Stanley and be fine with both masc/fem terms (ie fine be called a man or a woman). Like it or not, the vast majority of people are not aro, and romance is extremely important to most people. Which means that most people will want to write content about it.

And yeah, it's annoying to want something specific and have to make it yourself because no one else is interested, but what exactly do you want people to do? Like, genuinely, what do you think is going to happen by constantly complaining about it?

Like, okay, you want people to stop shipping characters and write more platonic stuff or stuff with aromantic characters. How are you going to make them do that?

This is fandom. This is a hobby. You cannot just force people to make things specifically for you.

And even if you could magically enforce that people had to write, Idk, 10 fics about platonic wholesome aro characters before they were allowed to ship, they would very likely give you back 10 short, unedited, half-assed drabbles and go "See? There. I made your 10 things. Now get off my ass and let me write what I actually want."

Listen, I know it sucks. On AO3 there are around 40,000 fics in my fandom. So there's quite a lot!

But I ship a rarepair. And when I say rarepair, I mean rarepair.

Do you know how many fics there are for that pairing?

AND I'M THE ONE THAT WROTE IT!

But I'm certainly not going around and demanding that other people write fics for that pair. Because that would be annoying as hell.

Some thoughts about popular Sanji pairings on the show? 😋

Let's discuss viola, nami, vivi, baby5, zoro, luffy, and pudding

Sanji/Viola : the original i support my girl's rights but more importantly, her wrongs. I love this pairing. I think their basis of connection is so pure and strong. Sanji risking it all for her at first meeting (and understanding her heart even when she was on the enemy side. Sanji didnt judge her for her obligation to act violently towards him at first) also she literally peeped inside sanji's mind AND still likes sanji, a connection can't get more intimate than this one, imho. I love the potential and the strong foundation of trust and loyalty from the very beginning of their relationship. If sanji gets any het pairing I'd want it to be with viola.

Sanji/Nami : the original Malewife/Girlboss pair. honestly, it's a bit hard for me to seriously ship the strawhats with one another because they give off heavy sibling energy T-T like sanji and nami are literally chaotic bestie duo (when they both get scared and jump at the sight of crawly crawly bugs omg). My favourite sanami moment gotta be when the first time sanji saw nami and got amazed was when nami was being loud boisterous and a thug. Also i love how genuinely sweet sanji is towards her but that's just regular sanji

Sanji/Zoro : Shonen so this pairing will never be canon anyway. I love their friendship. I could write endless essays on how sanji and zoro's connection is like a lifeline for both of them. It's not being mushy, it's just the truth. And i think Oda also wrote them like that because they are the wings of the pirate king so they have that fulfilling each other vibe going on for them. Of course i cant takk about zosan without mentioning thriller bark. But not just from sanji's side, i love zosan ESPECIALLY from zoro's side, seeing him being childish and nagging with sanji feels like a breath of fresh air and this bond shows zoro's silly side. I love it.

Sanji/Luffy : Luffy give heavy aro ace im ngl. But i love the Impact he's had on sanji and I've especially started seeing a potential in this pairing after wci and another Lusan dynamic here

Sanji/Baby5 : i know i know baby5 is married or whatever but i really would love to see some baby5 and sanji.

Sanji/Vivi : The power couple. This is really just me indulging and daydreaming about pairings tbh, vivi and sanji do not show that much of romantic chemistry. But Vivi is very very graceful, diplomatic and understanding. She's one of the few characters who can match sanji's charm and elegance (duh she's a princess). She's also caring selfless and a humanitarian. Hell she was willing to delay her own issues (reaching alabasta) to make a stop at winter island and find a doctor for nami - that's some selfless stuff that sanji would've done. Sanji and her values would align and they'd be good as a couple. I love the aesthetic, beauty and potential of this pairing.

Damian is Bruce’s blood son, Damian thinks of Dick, Jason, and Tim as his brothers.

Jason only thinks of Damian as his brother, maybe Dick but its history. Doesn’t consider Bruce his father, completely moved on from that part of his life. It’s unrealistic to me to write or imagine him playing happy big family with people he viewed as part of his dead life. Damian was there when he was reborn and he practically raised the squirt (in my hc).

Tim doesn’t think of Bruce as his dad but views him as a paternal figure since he was taken in. Thinks of Damian and Dick as his brothers, Jason was his idol and someone he looked up to. They barely interacted and it’s annoying when people act like he and Jason have the same dynamic like Jason and Dick did.

Dick considers Bruce his dad, Damian and Jason and Tim his brothers.

Sexualities/Gender HC

Bruce: Bisexual Man with a preference for women. Cis: He/Him

Dick: Unlabeled but has rizz with everyone. Doesn’t really give af about the gender thing so if you called him a woman he would just roll with it but personally just goes by He/Him or “any” if asked for a preference

Jason: Pansexual on the Aro spectrum. Probably due to a lot of his traumas, so outside of that probably also just panromantic. He’s a cis man but has definitely thought about identity stuff after the Lazarus pit. Goes by He/Him or They/Them. It/Its if he’s feeling funky.

Tim: Bisexual with a preference for men. Enby icon. Goes by He/They pronouns but sometimes just forgoes them altogether if possible. (Just use Tim in place of pronouns for entertainment).

Damian: In some aus he’s cis in a lot he’s transmasc (honestly if I don’t specify just assume Trans! Dami). Goes by He/Him. Aroace spectrum, really only falls for Jon (sometimes Billy or Colin). Unlike Jason, his isn’t due to traumas or emotional blocks. Maybe he’s born with it, maybe it’s maybelline.

Alfred: deffo has done drag at some point. Could see him with an ex bf on the battlefield before losing him tragically.

Shipping Wise

Literally none of the Batfam with each other with the explanations above because I do believe the others do have a familial relationship aside from JayTim- and even then I ship KonTim as well and BerTim or whatever the ship name is lol

Damian: Jon, Billy, and Colin (boy is not fucking straight LMFAO)

Bruce: Talia and Selina, they’re both goated ships I cannot pick which one is better (Joker only in the Lego universe and also the one joker from telltale’s Batman)

Dick: literally only Kori, I’m fixed shipped for life 🫶

Jason: Tim, Kori (sometimes the dynamic be dynamicing), Artemis- but also I like him single a lot of the time because I feel like he would avoid relationships and human connection bc he has issues

Tim: Connor, Bernard, and Jason (get Stephanie outta there let my girl live outside of their toxic ass mess 😭)

And that’s all, obviously no one has to share my headcanons and if you want to headcanon Jason and Tim being brothers because it’s just more fun for you then go right on ahead I ain’t discouraging anyone from that! Just wanted to write this so people understood I wasn’t shipping from a certain point of view and so they can be prepared if I do include jaytim in anything (which I may not considering how the fandom is nowadays).

Also I didn’t do the girlies or Duke Thomas because I only included the “inner circle” Batman and Robins Batfam to explain since the others don’t have the weird drama and stigma these ones do.

I don’t do many original posts here but I wanted to get initial Tomb of Dragons thoughts down because I rot13ed them as I was reading on bsky and want to be able to read them easily. Spoilers, obviously! a lot of ship stuff.

Good book overall - the continued worldbuilding was lovely (actual! dragons!!) and I found the overall witnessing/mystery plot more engaging than Grief - but I went in really loving Thara/Iäna and am feeling pretty sad and salty about that. from a character point of view I am delighted Thara has regained his sense of self enough to have an awkward crush. from a “having read half a million words of fic in the past 3-4 years” perspective I wish it was on his cute friend who would do anything for him.

It’s such a weird choice to plausibly set up a romantic relationship from Witness, then double back and introduce an eleventh-hour alternative low-key love interest with several shared characteristics to Iäna (hello, sweet tooth beloved by fic). I liked Hanu fine but all that did was underline how much less depth and interest there was in his interactions with Thara, aside from the sheer fact that Thara was attracted to him. Again: weird. I don’t know if she went in intending to shipbait or if she couldn’t get the story to work out the way she wanted with Thara having to leave Amalo, but the whole no-homo conversation honestly didn’t sit well with me (I did see some people got an aro read from it, which is interesting, though we don’t really know how the concept of marnis maps onto our queer identities. i can see it but personally it felt more like a bi homoromantic guy who hasn’t figured himself out yet) and felt like a massive rug-pull. It felt like the only way she thought she could write their dynamic not as romantic, when I would have been so much more interested in something more open like “sure, I’m marnis, but you’re still grieving and healing and I don’t think I’m the best person for a relationship in that situation”. I am fine having two gay men be very close and still platonic, it’s not something we see a ton of in fiction!

I will say one thing in addition to the usual “well, there’s always fic”. Unfortunately I don’t write fic but I do think there’s lots of tasty scenarios where they could still have a romance (if initially epistolary), when we all assumed Iäna would be the more experienced one/more comfortable being marnis and actually it’s the opposite. definitely rotating that in my mind.

The rest of the overall plot was very good, though! And I was thrilled to see Maia and co again, my beloveds - apart from ship stuff that was the thing I was desperately hoping to get. But unlike the others, with the finality of all I came out of it feeling pretty deflated, and I was hoping to not be immediately craving fix-its. I don’t know how I feel about Thara ending up on the run and separated from almost all his friends - I don’t see it as an unambiguously sad ending like I’ve seen some people read it, because he has managed a huge amount of healing over the series and we know from that final letter that he’s actually ready to reach out and keep in touch with people. And in terms of series plot/worldbuilding (even if KA has no plans to return to this world) it does open up a lot of interesting future plots.

UGH. i love him HOPELESSLY. i love the tragedy!!! the STORY the NARRATIVE is just so beautifully constructed it's unbelievable.... And They Became Monsters...</3 he just makes me really emotional bcs what if after losing your home and all your friends, you only had one (1) who remained who was also your best friend, and you became obsessed with controlling events and the universe so that nothing like that would ever happen again, what if you assigned yourself protector of Your People, what if you were so very desperate you made stupid mistakes and fucked up bad, what if you cared about your friends yet used them as pawns in your plan to acheive the happy ending, what if you viewed even your best friend your everything as a Possesion in order to protect her to protect them all better, what if you get her to play along with your plans subtly, though you know she hates being used, what if you get her to shoot you to draw out your watcher, what if in order to acheive your goal against the destructive forces of the ineviatble war in the universe you make a deal with your own personal devil, what if you're not living in the good universe anymore and it tears you apart, what if you decide to sacrifice one of your own for your plan though it will hurt whatever humanity you have left (which you've buried violently), what if your ghost came back desperate to apologise to the man you hurt the most, what if you were dead-set on your goal and saw Nothing Else, what if you sacrified your own daughter to get your best friend to See through hurting her, though it hurt you too you would never Say It, you would never Say ANYTHING, you fuck, what if you perpetuated the cycle of abuse one of your former-friends now-pawn (who offered you help and to get out which you refused) was in and manipulated it and it led to his end, what if you truly went off the deep end due to all the self-created pressure to right the universe and give your best friend the happy ending she deserves at the cost of anything, what if you hurt her horribly for your end goal, what if you hurt everyone around you yet you yourself are in the most pain suffering invisibly since back when they were naievely enjoying themselves, what if you became a horrifying figure of tyrrany to the ones you aim to protect, what if you view yourself similarly to how you view your pawns, what if you try to sacrifice her son to avoid her own sacrifice, what if you saw your tragedy out to its end and died...

hm. non-romantic bennybrax? refusal of non-nuanced view of him and acknowledging his deeply complicated and tragic nature? He Actually Cares For the benny cast and not just benny, he just doesn't show it and uses them for his plans anyway as he believes that's how he can keep them safe. self-made villain brax. deeply traumatized and exhibiting understandable and concerning reactions to it... just. lots of things. oughh.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

hm. for just One Thing, i really wish simon guerrier'd had a good grip on his character while writing the wake. i really like lots of the concept and bits but due to no undertsanding of brax it's just? weird? like Why Would He Do That. (v. dedicated benny analysts have analysed, and i agree w them... brax Could Have done those things for complex reasons but i would have really liked it being shown in the episode itself. love you benny analysists<3)

4. What fandoms do you write for?

Currently I've been very Supernatural brained, but I've written for A Series of Unfortunate Events in the past and will definitely again in the future. Whenever I stop writing about supernatural for 5 minutes. My Smosh RPF phase is decidedly done, but I just have the feeling I'll write one more fic in it one day? Don't ask me what. And then way back in high school I wrote To Kill a Mockingbird and Harry Potter (*vomits*)

5. Do you respond to comments?

When I remember that according to social conventions i really should, yes. I do have a tendency to be like "oh that's a short comment. It doesn't require a response" but I'm trying to be better about that and still thank people for one sentence comments.

6. Angstiest Ending?

Oh that's hard. That's really hard. Because that isn't the same thing as saddest ending. Angst is a bit more self centered and a bit less valid. I could answer saddest. But angstiest? I write too much angst to know the answer to that. And I don't know which type of angst is more angst. Right now I'll say "Like flies from your face" (Supernatural) but I don't love that answer.

Not on my fic. Got some on tumblr a while ago now, but never on AO3 or directed at my fic.

9. Do you write smut?

Hell yeah! Not a ton because smut is really another kind of action scene and writing actions is the thing I like the least, and also because a lot of my ideas are sexual but the flow would be ruined by in-depth sex scenes, but I have and I will again.

10. Do you write crossovers?

Nah. No shade to those who do, but that is not how my brain works. I predominantly write fic as a form of literary analysis, which means I don't have a ton of use for fully changing the setting of things these days.

11. Ever had a fic stolen?

Not like, completely stolen, but there was that time someone's fic had a very specific idea that mine also had, and they left kudos on my fic so i know they read it, and then when someone asked about it they denied ever having read it. Which, I would have been perfectly fine with all of that and taken it as a compliment if they credited me. It's the not even mentioning me, and then denying they'd even seen it, that I took issue with.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No. I mean if anyone wanted to I'd let them, but God I'd never ask anyone to do that much work.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic?

God no. I could never write with someone else. Absolutely not.

14. All time favourite ship?

I'm aro as all hell so the real answer to this is no ship. No ship is the best ship. Write more gen fic I'm begging you. Especially gen fic that isn't about friendship. Write character studies! Write about acquaintances! Write the weird liminal relationships that we don't have words for.

15. WIPs you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Oh my God so many. I'm a 20 WIPs at a time sort of person, which means I'm fully aware a decent chunk will never actually be finished. My real one that got away, at least at the moment, is this guy wrenching death fic I was writing for Smosh, and then life stuff happened so i was not in the emotional state to write a death fic, and then stuff changed so the ending no longer worked. Like, on the one hand it is very good that Smosh *finally* started giving Tommy Bowe his due and in real life I'm very happy about it. On my other, the bittersweet ending where he quit because he realized staying for friendship was bad when he could lose them at any moment and went somewhere that treated him better and had an entire career he never would have had if Spencer didn't die is ruined. And i apparently am incapable of thinking of a new ending, so it is doomed to be a forever WIP I guess.

16. Writing strengths?

I have a very consistent voice and style. Most things written by me take the same tone and shape. I have a good sense of what things come out well when written by me and how to pace and execute them. I have a unique style — you're going to recognize my writing most of the time. I think it's a style that sticks well in people's heads.

17. Writing Weaknesses?

Action. Good lord I hate writing any kind of action. And while I write actual dialogue well, I never like any of my dialogue tags or the other prose around it.

18. Thoughts on mixed language dialogue?

What a weirdly specific question. I honestly can't say I really see it done very often, except in the kinds of porn that I am not reading for the quality of their dialogue. But uh, go for it if you want?

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Is it exactly a fandom if there were only 4 of you writing it, all on fanfiction.net in 2018? Well, we count it. I read To Kill a Mockingbird in School, went "haha, I bet weirdos have written fanfic of this," immediately discovered it was in fact a goldmine for hurt and angst, and that was it for me. I've been a fic writer ever since.

Uh... You know what? Honestly? If I really think about it? One of my first ones for To Kill a Mockingbird. I don't think I've had the chance to write a death that good since. I just put it on AO3, since I'm talking about it now. Not Even a Nightmare

Hi! So you can call this a rant or a vent or whatever I don't rlly care - I just wanted to put some of my opinions out there bc it is eating me inside out to keep my opinions on Alastor's sexuality and all of the discourse about him being shipped to myself.

Also i'd like to state that I'm writing this as someone who is aroace but has no actual wish to be in a romantic relationship and actually struggles to so much as picture what that's be like for myself. I would also like to state how I'm not speaking for the whole community and others will have different opinions to myself.

Firstly - aroace is a spectrum (as someone who is on the aroace spectrum btw) and I completely agree with ppl who say that it is a spectrum and shipping has always existed and you can't rlly stop an entire fandom. My only problem is when ppl completely ignore that he is aroace while doing this, bc to me it seems like there's so much potential to having him have to go through those types of emotions and to write him off as if he's completely allo not only can make some people feel unseen but also just isn't as fun.

Also I kind of believe that he'd possibly date someone for the entertainment - like even if he didn't exactly feel romantic attraction maybe he'd be willing to be around someone closely bc he might like the reactions he'd be getting. (example: he might've stayed in a relationship with Vox maybe not out of pure attraction but if he found out that affection could make the TV short-circuit? He'd be interested)

Adding to that, I personally do not actually ship him with anyone romantically due to his character + the fact that I am projecting my own distaste for romance on him but you do you ig.

Also, on the note of nsfw around him - sometimes you cannot stop a fandom, rule 34 exists and some people who are asexual sometimes may want to have sex and all of that stuff. Personally I think he'd probably be sex-repulsed due to the fact that he canonically has issues with being touched.

ALSO, i personally think that way too many people are brushing over the idea of putting Alastor in a QPR - like that would literally be so awesome.

Alastor x Rosie? Cute af (to me Rosie gives of aro vibes too, but more romance - favourable) like they're already besties and honestly I think that Rosie would defo help him figure out about his identity considering that he's quite obviously not all that sure about slang and stuff.

Vox x Alastor - It has the potential to be SO FUCKING FUN like, you get to experiment with how they feel for each other, maybe what Alastor's got going on bc he died before being aroace was rlly a thing and he'd be confused about how he felt about Vox for sure.

Lucifer x Alastor - I quite like it, ik that Lucifer is supposed to be with Lillith but she did take an extremely long hiatus on her family up in heaven so i think it's okay. Plus the idea of them bonding and becoming close due to Charlie is wonderful.

Even angel and Alastor - maybe after Val Angel doesn't want a super sexual relationship - maybe he's not all that interested in something purely romantic either and though I love huskerdust this would still be pretty cool.

Really all I'm saying is; be considerate. Incorporate the fact that Alastor is Aroace, even if you do ship him - in or out of QPRs - and ofc sometimes writing someone who is part of a group ur not in is difficult (coming from someone who often struggles in writing especially when it comes to romance) but taking a crack at it might actually turn out to be rlly cool.

But please don't ignore his aroace-ness, there's not a huge amount of aroace characters out there and acting like someone isn't can be annoying for ppl who want to find rep around their identity, esp if they haven't seen much before (I can relate and he was one of the first aroace characters I was introduced to after I found out what it meant).

So yeah, that's my piece.

besides all the stuff that’s stated in my pinned, i’ve been writing since i was 10 (i am 18) and i’ve wanted to be a published author for the longest time, though as i grew older i realized there’s a lot of other ways i can get my stories out to the world, like screenwriting, animating (or being both the creator and writer of my own show AHEM totally not talking about hazbin) so i’m not really sure of things yet, but i will say i’ve learned a lot about writing since i first started and even though i know this is all for fun, i take the way i write things seriously, so any constructive feedback you might have will be valuable to me! anyway, i have A LOT of opinions on everything hazbin/helluva so you can ask about those or more about me! i’m a very open person so i like to give in depth responses. but yeah feel free to ask about my opinions on helluva/hazbin as well as my personal life too!

We didn't know if you were interested in hearing this, but we heavily related to Falin a lot, and not just because we always choose the healer/cleric in things ;^^ We're a system, and share souls with more that one being in the same body. We had already liked Falin, but when her shared soul plot with the red dragon kicked off we felt very deeply connected to her then. She really felt like someone we could heavily relate to and wanted to see her arc blossom in the story of Dungeon Meshi. But like you said in your Falin post she gets... essentially table scraps compared to every other important character? Which honestly shocked us considering so much of the narrative revolved around her. This is a bizarre statement, but it's the only way we could describe what we felt to a friend of ours:

I'm grateful for the post-canon content showing us how she rejected Shuro's proposal, and how Shuro takes it gracefully

it's an ending that shows people have finally seen Falin as a person instead of an object of affection, or at least Shuro does, and how much agency Falin has gained after losing her free will when turned into a chimera

There's something about how she has to be turned into a beast that can't speak her own mind for people to finally hear her voice

Oh, lmao yeah my bad I forgot to mention there were a lot of ships in there. I sincerely think everybody is paired is someone, but I opt to ignore the romance in favor of storytelling and character dynamics. I'm sitting there going "alright. make things worse. make relationships complicated, write ten different kinds of them and then write how they're mended." It's a study on writing to me but I forgot not everybody sees fics that way lol. Some of the things that stuck with me were the conversations adult characters have with each other, but if that content and (definitely more than one pregnancy) is a squick, that's so fair to avoid it. When I was a kid, I used to read those "spy AU" fics a lot LOL, I think my first Pokemon fic was one and it was a Pearlshipping one too. I'm not much of a shipper to begin with, so I'm very easily convinced by others. Ikari tho...Paul is too mean for that, I don't even know where the "troublesome" nickname came from and why it turned into a term of endearment XD It sure is hard to find fics without the main 4 pairing tho huh? Back to relationships tho, since you're on that anime rewatch, if there's any instance of say...oooh, like that episode with Lance and the Gyarados? Ash tried to use the friendship speech to talk Gyarados down, and Lance had to teach him that doesn't work all the time. I think a list of stuff Ash learns from others could be fun. You already got one with the Snowbelle City badge. I've seen a lot of good Ash fics that respect his personality for what it is, and good adults (like Kukui) coming to understand him. Brock and Misty too, I think this thing fics do when they touch upon their family situations and their personal growth is always fun. Hard to write, but really good. I've got one anime only thing you might like, and its this tribute video, type "Pokemon Bonjour Au Revoir" into youtube :3

Is not that I hate Ikari, is more that.. If I'm going to read Ikari then it should be from someone whose OTP is Ikari if that makes sense? Not the "this is a pokeshipping fanfic and I need Dawn to be with someone because of compulsory heteronormativeness" yknow? I think I've said it before but.. if you have no strong attachment for a ship, dont include it in your fics... It feels like following a checklist and it's irritating when characters personalities are twisted to make a ship work instead of idk just using those characters by themselves.

Main ikarishippers actually have very cool ideas from what I've seen in the wild (aka fanart). It just bothers me a LOT when every single living being is paired with someone in fanfics... BEING 👏 SINGLE 👏 IS 👏 NOT 👏 A 👏 SIN!

Ohh that's a cool idea! There's indeed lots of instances he learns something that he takes with him for the rest of the anime but is easy to miss. Not to mention the other way around (people learning from him) that some absolutely deserve to be remembered and talked about more (Gary's Electivire using his tail just like Bayleef uses her vines my beloved)

And yeah! Fanfics that explore platonic relationships really need more attention. Is one thing the anime rarely focused on but when it did it was really good (Mallow's relationship with both her father and mother is something small but so special to me. I would love more explorations of that family and how she feels having to take the role of mother so young and how she wanted to just have people around her appreciate how much she sacrificed when doing that)

Something you alluded to that's a real central probably is that when you have only one character who represents a group you can't represent everyone. From a writing standpoint the very act of rendering a single individual means that some aspects of experience have to chosen over others.

You see this with representation of other identities, if there's only one female character or only one black character--if the woman is feminine then it's imposing hyper-femininity, if she's average than it's against femininity because femininity is bad (of course TV never makes characters butch). Which is why writing advice is usually to have at least 2 so you can portray more duality. Female character A can be smart and Female character B can be less intelligent without saying your holding women to higher standards of "women are more grounded and wiser" but also not saying women are stupid.

With Riz: he's only one guy. He can't possibly represent all the facets of being ace or aro or the intersections of aroace.

But at the same time it's frustrating when major parts of aromanticism are ignored. Not because the other aspects aren't real and important, but because SOME aspects are ignored with fewer opportunities to explore. Like, are there other aro or ace characters on d20? Not really.

And especially because this isn't a criticism of the actors but of the general fandom thing to performatively only care about some topics, I think it's fair to call out people's unwillingness to engaged in certain ideas. If people are qpr shipping Riz with others, while frustrating, some people might just want to see themselves represented. It's often a difficult position to be in compared.

I agree with all your essential points here.

I will point out though that d20 does have other aro and/or ace characters. Liam is ace but not aro. Prince Andhera is ace and word of god arospec (although I haven't watched ACoFaF yet to know how much this informs his story). As nervous as I am about the execution of Riz's storyline, I think d20 deserves a lot of credit for the representation it has. Aro and ace are not terribly common identities on the scale of things and I don't need every story to feature someone like me. What bugs me more about the Riz stuff is the fandom culture aspect of it. Neither Liam nor Prince Andhera appear to be centered in fandom conversations the way Riz is. Plus, Liam is definitely not aro so even when he is centered it's still in a way that allows for fandom romance culture to go unchallenged and Andhera's ao3 tag seems to feature plenty of shipping.

But your core point stands, no aro character can be all things to all aro people. And absolutely it's fair that people from a wide spectrum of aro experiences want to lay claim to one of the few aro characters on offer. It's just hard for me personally to find empathy for that in the ship-centric culture of fandom.
