Not very fresh news but!! They’ve fully(?) switched over to the New Glasgow Subway trains… very sleek, round, almost like a sci-fi caterpillar :3c (with all those continuous segments)
Haven’t been on them yet but they look good at least. A minor shame they’re not so orange anymore; I liked the previous orange livery.
The third generation (the new white ones) have another carriage segment than the second gen (orange and grey) so they have 4 instead of 3 - to have more platform space I think? The gangway is also open, so you can look right down the train like a double bus. The whole loop is meant to switch over to a driverless system too at some point.
I’m so curious to see what they’ve done with the old carriages now that they’ve all been sold or scrapped by now. (One of em was put on display)

I do not understand your love for image genAI bc apart from the rampant theft from artists most of its uses are just. Not good like. Some people are capable of making interesting things with it but 90% of what it's being used for is like. Terrible anyways.
i don't really have any particular love for image gen AI. for starters, the styles its primarily designed to emulate are completely outside of my taste bracket and i find those types of work exactly as hollow and soulless when produced by human hands. there's a reason you don't see me going out there using gen ai for a bunch of stuff. i've never even touched midjourney. i like to draw! i dont want something to draw For me!
but here's the thing. if '90 percent of stuff made this way is crap' was a valid reason for something not existing we would have to get rid of every single art form on the planet. it's the same argument people make about booktok books - Stuff Used To Be Better But Now We Have This Sludge Factory Turning Out Fine-Tuned Consumer Slop With Reckless Abandon And It's a Threat To The Fabric Of Society
buddy ! that sludge factory is the Human Race! what you're witnessing is the lowering of barriers! the more people are capable of producing a specific type of creative work, the overall less quality there will be, because most people are not particularly skilled in creative work, or lack the taste you need to make something compelling when unskilled. that's a good thing. i would rather 99,999 people get the chance to make something i hate if it means 1 person gets the chance to make something i love that they wouldn't have otherwise been able to.
i think that the question of art theft as is done in the training of AI image generation models is a sticky one. i hate the fact that tech companies have made boatloads of money that wouldn't have been possible without a truly countless number of man hours by artists that will never see a penny of that wealth in their lifetime. but i also think the more time i spend sitting down and thinking about it and the more conversations i read on the subject, i can't view the output of these generative models as theft. at least, not without conceding a ton of ground to ideas about intellectual property that i think have been overall much more harmful to the health of the art world than AI image generation will be in the longterm.
gen AI models do not store images. they are not churning out recombination of images that have been fed into them. they were trained to analyze visual patterns in these images, associate those patterns with specific concepts, and produce new images following these patterns when prompted with the specific concept. it is fundamentally not dissimilar to how human artists learn and for me i can't in good faith view it as morally wrong on its own merits. i think where plagiarism/theft/fraud-adjacent concerns come in is 1. attempts to disguise how a piece was created and 2. attempting to create stuff that pass muster as a specific other artist's work.
but neither of these are problems unique to AI. people have been arguing about lying about how you make your art and copying other peoples styles for ages. what AI does is it VASTLY increase the scale this can happen at, because it's removing an insane skill barrier from the whole process. and yeah ultimately at the end of the day that's annoying. there are absolutely going to be repercussions on the art world the same way the digital camera impacted portraiture and the printing press impacted scribing. but ai image generation... isn't going to go away. it's just not. so i feel like developing standards for how we engage with this insane, objectively cutting edge and impressive tech, is going to make the art world much safer than starting what boils down to a fucking culture war about it.

I just finished watching Cold Mountain and re-reading “Yours Respectfully, Doegred.” We’re around 8 years from the start of the civil war (1861). What do you think would have happened to the Finweans if they had stayed in New York? Would some of them have joined up? Would they have paid someone to fight on their behalf? I don’t have solid opinions, except that if any of his brothers had gone off to war, then I have a sneaking suspicion Maedhros would’ve found a way to protect them. The average age of a Union soldier was 26, so I can see any of the boys signing up/getting drafted. Or maybe they make a business out of making firearms (aka Curufin gets rich off war). This is a “just for fun” question.
Hello again, friend! Sorry for the delay, we absolutely loved your question and—fun fact that will perhaps surprise you not at all—we have previously discussed how the Civil War will and/or would impact our Silmarillion AU characters. We have plotted out our adaptation’s timeline in its rough entirety, so I shan’t say if the American Civil War DOES feature at all but keep reading I guess to find out! ^_^
Without any spoilers, it is interesting to point out that our Fingon, blessed by his teaching from Dr. Olorin, practices medicine in a way very advanced for his time period (late 1840s-early 1850s, thus far). In fact, a lot of the rules of cleanliness, wound-care, etc that he implements developed in modern medicine as a result of the high casualty rate AND high amputation rate of the Civil War. That’s what a little extra Maia help will do for you, thanks Olorin 🙏🏻 As a rule, Fingon’s general approach to medicine is designed to be 10-15 years ahead of his time; no wonder folk like Celegorm are skeptical of his methods, at times.
(Tangentially related to this is that you may speculate—as we have—on how the sudden increase in limb amputations during the war will or would affect Maedhros’ own view of himself and his loss. Right now, he feels singled out and horribly conspicuous because of the missing hand. In ten years or more, during or after the War? The post-war new normal for the American general public might actually render him less notable. Furthermore, he would have had many years to adapt to his disability prior to the War, giving him a weird social edge—and that is even without any prosthetics Curufin might provide.)
Now, for the purely speculative part of your question: what if the Feanorians had stayed in the East? I think that Celegorm would be first to leap to enlist for the Union; once Celegorm went Curufin would go; once Curufin went Ambarussa would go. Maedhros would have instantly known how all of this would go down, and spurred by the need to protect his brothers as well as his own sense of right and wrong (inflamed by Feanor’s own abolitionist convictions) he would have enlisted also. Maglor, of course, would go only once Maedhros went.
The odd one out, actually, is Caranthir. I think that before he leaves for war, Maedhros would talk to Caranthir and impress upon him the importance of remaining at Formenos. Someone needs to stay out of the army to protect the family land, to manage the household accounts, and to be there for Nerdanel. Maedhros would have known Caranthir is best suited for this role, and it would have eased his mind greatly to know that even one of his brothers is “safe,” whatever that means in wartime.
(Once in the military, I do agree that Curufin would have, if given opportunity, set to work at the armories and improving the poor muskets and cannons that were available at the time. The big caveat is if he would have had the chance.)
As an aside, it is worth bringing up Finrod, who would be an interesting study during the War. Ten years or so more mature, he would perhaps be a little more settled into what contemporaries might call Wisdom. He would be intensely devoted to the Union’s cause on the basis of fighting for emancipation; being still distrustful of Government and Nationalism, however, he would not be overly fond of the popular idea of fighting for the Union itself. Political cause will never move our Finrod as deeply as moral cause, however he interprets moral right and wrong to be. In his mind (correctly, of course) slavery is a supreme evil, thus the South must be defeated. Any talk of Keeping the Union Whole, or of the pragmatic necessity of retaining the wealth of the South for the Country, would be distasteful to Finrod as a distraction from the True Goal. Perhaps he would have been a writer of Pamphlets, in his spare time, which Maedhros would read with great interest whenever he had opportunity to possess one out at the front.
One last note! Folk in California, although on the opposite side of the continent, were deeply involved with the Civil War, in a wide variety of ways. Some sent back funds to help with their respective side of the war effort. Some put together volunteer militias who journeyed back East to join the front line. Some traveled back independently to join already established units. There was even some fighting in California, as the abolitionist, pro-Union citizens of California coordinated to thwart any attempts by secessionists to either provide aid to the South or to seize control of state government outright. One can easily imagine how our various cast of characters would behave in such a crisis, for good or for ill!
Thanks for the question, keep them coming!

Magic as a TV Show
(CWs: Child Abuse, Cults) (Edit: Did some light editing, still a bit messy but should be fine now)
So, it's not a secret that I'm a big fan of Magic. It's my favorite T1 MV and one of my favorite Milgram MVs in general. Even before Purge March I'd re-watch it over and over again just because I liked it so much.
One of my favorite things about it is the way the visual language and symbolism develops over it's runtime, and with Purge March it's gotten ever better so lets talk about it!
Based on True Events
So, Magic is the very cheery TV Show that is based on the horrors going on backstage, and it's also aware of it's own fictional nature. It ends with the real Amane watching the show. It knows it's a world created by a 12 year old who wants to be Good.
This causes something interesting when viewing it's imagery. As Magic depiction of events can be both very literal and very metaphorical at the same time.
For example: Something that surprised most people (including myself) is the cat being real, and while it is representative of Something (which we will get to) it is very much an actual cat that was killed.
Magic plays with what is real and what is fictional very loosely, and while certain things Happen in the real world, you can't really separate the real from the fictional here. It's too interconnected with each other and the imagery would lose it's impact if you did separate them.
So with that established it's visual analysis time!
The Set
Tumblr media
So Magic is set in one place for the majority of it's runtime. This set! Which resembles a lot of educational kid's tv programs, usually ones for preschool and under.
Here's are sets from an early season of Hi-5 and Imagination Movers to compare.
Tumblr media
You can see the similarities, it's heavy on bright colors and wacky designs, the logo of the show is plastered Somewhere you can easily see, and only some of the props can actually be used!
These two examples are also very music based. Both of them being shows starring children's musical groups.
Tumblr media
The animals here (except for the Cat which is in a Complicated situation) are probably representative of the audience. The other people of the cult being taught along with Amane.
Audience Participation is a big thing for shows like this, you'll see them perform with a bunch of children on the side cheering and dancing. It's a fun time for everyone!
Going back to the set, while the main set only has the colorful stage we do see a few props in Magic. You can see a Choir book right here so the group can sing.
Tumblr media
A Whiteboard to teach.
Tumblr media
A Donation box to show your generosity.
And...
Tumblr media
A Game Show Stage to see if you understood the lesson.
Age Rating
I've talked...extensively before on how Pain is handled in Magic and while that post is outdated because I posted it right before Purge March a lot of it still stands to some extent.
Amane's pain in Magic is downplayed in Magic, it's nothing serious. Even though this pain is something Inflicted Onto Amane Physically by Gatacha.
Tumblr media
I was going to talk a bit about corporeal punishment in Japan before realizing that this isn't even something that is considered a punishment. It's just a finger flick. This is something your older brother does to you cause he thinks its funny. It's the lightest possible kind of "punishment" there is.
This makes Amane's reaction to it seem silly. An Overreaction to something that isn't even that bad. She has cartoonish swirls and falls over dramatically. It's...Immature of her to react like this.
Tumblr media
Even though we know these are injuries are much more serious than they are shown here. Magic doesn't portray them as serious, and also portrays Amane as Immature for acting like this.
Which points to something interesting, as I said this show resembles a preschool show and it's strange that twelve year old Amane Momose, almost a teenager Amane Momose, is existing in a world like this.
It gets even weirder when we consider that, while Amane most likely hasn't been exposed to much media her mind still conjures up a marching band in Purge March and she talks very "adult" in both her VDs and hates it when people treat her like a child.
Not only that, but Amane Momose in both Purge March And Magic is drawn visibly older than she actually is.
Tumblr media
It's not the easiest to see because I can't find a good picture but you can see it in just the face shape. Outside of Magic and Purge March Amane's face is more squishy, with less defined cheeks and bigger, rounder eyes. While Magic and Purge March have her face be more defined and her eyes smaller and sharper. Making her look more like a young teenager rather than the seven year old. She's even called Big Sister Amane in Magic's credits.
If Amane Momose's mind is depicting her as older than she actually is, and Amane Momose outside of it acts very "adult" and hates it when people treat her like a child. Why then does Magic portray her actions as immature? Why is she put in the spot of a preschooler learning from their teachers?
Why is Amane Momose, in her mind, stuck in a preschool show?
Well, there's two layers to this.
First of all, Good preschool shows are usually very empathetic to the kids watching them and good preschool shows don't patronize or talk down to the viewers.
Even if the problem is seemingly irrational or nonsensical.
Tumblr media
It's important to be empathetic with your viewers.
Tumblr media
And to treat it their problems and issues with respect and understanding.
Tumblr media
A concept that would be very appealing to Amane Momose, person who gets tortured for even showing a smidge of "impurity."
Second, why...wouldn't Amane Momose be portrayed as the preschooler learning here? She's the one constantly messing up, still not a good girl even though she should have learned by now. She's immature by the standards of her cult.
She's the perfect actor for this role, a girl that cannot be a good girl but wants to be.
Only if, only if, only if I could be a good girl I hope, I hope everyone can be happy and smile Forever, forever together would be a dream
The big sister that everyone can learn from, a character who has to learn from the older more experienced folk in the cast before becoming like them. The one who fails so that everyone else can learn.
This is the role Amane Momose has given herself.
Well...that and one other thing.
Cast
Tumblr media
Will I ever get over the cat parallels?
The answer is no, but ignoring that, Amane has gotten two acting roles! The cat here is both the actual Purge March cat but is representative of Amane. As seen by how the injuries on the cat are her injuries in Magic and Purge March and how the cat gets directly paralleled with her in shots. This cat is, for all intents and purposes, both The Cat and Amane.
This gives the scene where Amane helps the cat a neat double meaning. Amane is helping the cat but it's also symbolically her helping herself...and failing.
Because Your not supposed to escape your trial.
Amane: Both pain and illness are trials.
This is one of the worst things you can do.
Amane: According to our teachings, those who run from them are the worst evil there is. That’s one of the four great principles. No matter who you are, that cannot be forgiven.
Your especially not supposed to steal those trials away.
Amane: Oh – speaking of which, there is one among the prisoners right now. An evil existence that’s trying to steal people’s trials away from them.
The cat is Amane's sinful desires to escape pain and help people, because that's Bad Apparently. She is cast as both the sinner and the thing that tempts people to sin. The corruptive force and the one who falls for it.
If were talking TV: She's the one in those 90s PSA episodes who gets Wrapped up in a Bad Thing and also the person who's the gateway to the Bad Thing.
(Blueepink has a wonderful addition to one of my posts over here which elaborates on this and is what made me realize it in the first place. Go read it she talks about some fun animal symbolism in it!)
Amane does however redeem herself in the end. You can always learn to be better after all. Even if you are the Worst Girl.
Tumblr media
But you can't get rid of the devil that easily, she had some help!
(You can't get rid of the devil that easily in general, but it's nice to imagine you could-)
Let's talk about the mascots!
And Crew
Tumblr media
So as people have noted each mascot corresponds to one of the doctrines.
In Magic introduction order we have:
Gachata- ’Tis ordained, thou shall stay thine course, then perish Yuri- ’Tis ordained, thou shall deliver unto those thou believest in Gozake -’Tis ordained, thou shall discard vulgarity Riyone- ’Tis ordained, thou shall follow thine destiny
(Fun fact: The doctrines are introduced opposite to how the mascots are introduced in Purge March. I don't know what this means but it certainly is interesting)
Like a lot of children's tv show groups, each mascot seems to be focused on a specific task/idea.
Gachata is Teaching Yuri is Donations Gozake is Choir And Riyone is Complicated
Each design reflects this in one way or another. Gachata is a robot because robots are associated with being smart and logical. Yuri's clothes are patched up and he's wearing a bin making him look, well poor. Gozake is in priest's wear and has a Conductor's Baton and Riyone...
Well, she has bandage ears. But that's a weird design choice isn't it? Especially since the cult is so against medicine, or more accurately against escaping pain, that Wrapping a Handkerchief around a cat's leg is considered wrong.
Amane literally wants to kill Shidou Right Now for violating that rule...so why does Riyone have bandages?
The answer is she doesn't, this is Magic Exclusive Design Choice.
Tumblr media
Here is the best picture of Riyone I Could get in Purge March.
These are not the same ears, their rounder and smaller and don't have the bandage holes at the end.
Do you know what else is weird about Riyone?
Tumblr media
This sequence.
Because as Amane has stated in the T2 VD, your not supposed to run from pain.
So why is Riyone suggesting healing the cat's physical injury through prayer?
Especially since, presumably, the rule about pain is under her. She's the one representing it.
Well, this is Amane's fictional TV show. The one she's writing to bring herself comfort. Why Wouldn't she want Riyone to be a healer who could stop the pain?
You will note that this gives extra responsibility onto Amane for not following what is the obvious Good Action. Healing the Cat with Prayer would have Fixed everything but she had to go Too Far and needed to be taught a Lesson and now the cat is Gone.
Riyone is also paralleled with her mom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is probably due to the rule she's associated with, as that's the rule her mom punished Amane for breaking and the rule Amane punished her for breaking.
Amane has Not acknowledged that what was done to her was Wrong, she has just acknowledged the hypocrisy of the action. Riyone is portrayed as right for punishing her since it Is her doctrine she broke, while her mom is portrayed as wrong because she was not able to live up to her own standards.
This is probably why Riyone doesn't disappear in the end. As said above, Magic plays very fast and loose with what is real and what is metaphorical. Riyone represents her mom Yes but She's more representative of the rule, a rule that Amane still (wants to) believe in it.
For now at least.
Lighting
So I haven't mentioned the stage light yet even though it's a really important part of it, it's what sets off the chain of events that end in Winged Amane. It's the most real looking thing in this entire MV.
Tumblr media
In a move I will find funny forever, this is one of the few things in Magic that doesn't seem to be connected to any specific real world event, object, or person. This stage light is most likely, purely a metaphor.
The way it disguise its nature is really interesting to me. Magic is so obviously fictional and fantasized that the real looking stage light stands out, especially since it hurts The Cat. It's unexpected and concerning, it feels out of place in this cheery world.
Except, I've mentioned it multiple times now that Magic plays fast and loose with the boundaries of fiction and reality. Magic is a show and it knows it. This Stage light was always apart of it's visual identity as a show.
This Stage light is the most obvious Show element out of everything. It's the lighting AND the inciting incident. An important backstage element and an important story element all wrapped up into one light.
This is also probably a reference to an early scene in the Truman Show.
Tumblr media
The light falling is one of the first things that clues Truman to the nature of his world. It's the inciting incident because Truman starts noticing more strange things happening in his town, and an important backstage element, a star in the sky.
Plus, the stagelight was already breaking when we see it in Magic, we can see it flicker for a few seconds before falling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It wasn't sabotaged with the intent to hurt. The light of this world is Literally Breaking. This image of stable happiness was never going to last forever and has probably been broken multiple times in the past.
It just so happened that The Cat was the one it fell on-top of this time.
Audience
I would go into more costuming or the storybook sequences in Magic if this post wasn't already so long. I think Magic is a deeply interesting MV and honestly it doesn't even feel like I'm scratching its surface sometimes.
I sometimes call it Amane Momose's self-insert hurt/comfort fix-it-fic because that really is what Magic is. It's her fix-it fic. Her TV series. Her maladaptive daydream that makes her feel like she still Has Something to hold onto.
Even I can say "I'm sorry" Even I have hope I swear! I'm going to be a good girl now! That's it!
This is actually something she shares a bit with Fuuta but if we talked about those parallels we would be here forever and it's also very much out of the scope of this post.
But, as I mentioned, we see Amane watching it at the end. She's an audience member for her own show, detached from all the silly, empathetic, understanding, fun events going on in that world.
Amane Momose is Very Aware that the world she wants isn't real.
But even so, that Want for it to be real is going to bleed into everything.

Corporate Greed Is Trying To Crush The D&D Community
Alright Tumblr, listen up! The Dungeons & Dragons community is in grave danger right now and we need your help to defend ourselves!
It's no secret that for a good few years now, we've been living in a new golden age for Dungeons & Dragons. The game is more popular now than it's ever been before. It has a thriving community of homebrewers and content creators, and is even supported by third party publishers outside of Wizards of the Coast. It feels like every day someone in this community is creating something amazing.
And Wizards of the Coast, in a display of corporate greed that would make the Abyss itself blush with envy, is planning to take our awesome community and drive a stake through its heart.
They're doing this by changing (or more accurately eviscerating) the Open Game License, which the community depends on to publish homebrew content. Quick FAQ to bring you guys up to speed:
What is the Open Game License?
The Open Game License (or OGL) is the public license issued by Wizards of the Coast, that lays out the rules for publishing third-party content for D&D.
Basically, it allows us make and even sell our own content for the game without running afoul of copyright law. This is something we normally couldn't do with the copyright system being the way it is, but the OGL is designed to skirt around those thorny issues. In exchange for following the OGL's (very reasonable and permissive) rules, we're protected from any copyright demons the lawyers send our way.
And so the fandom gets to create its homebrew stuff without interference, while the actual publishers of the game itself get to maintain the copyright on it. A win-win... or so it was.
What's happening to the Open Game Licence?
Right now Wizards of the Coast is cooking a new version of the OGL, one that drastically alters the terms of the deal. The terms of the new OGL were leaked yesterday by a journalist from Gizmodo (the article is linked at the top of the post), who was tipped off by someone inside the company. And every change they're planning to make is a terrible one. Some highlights:
-There are much heavier restrictions on the content we're allowed to publish, and it's unknown how those restrictions will be enforced.
-If we want to publish anything under the new OGL, we have to register with Wizards of the Coast, give them personal information, report our income and potentially give them royalties if our income is too high for their liking.
-Wizards of the Coast retains all rights to our creations, and may use them however they see fit without our consent.
-Previous versions of the Open Game License are rendered void, forcing us to use the new predatory version if we want to publish anything new.
-Wizards of the Coast can change the terms of the new OGL at anytime, unilaterally, with only 30 days notice.
Who does this effect?
In short: just about everyone. Homebrewers, publishers, dicemakers, virtual tabletop software developers, actual play podcasters. I can't say for sure because I'm not a copyright lawyer, but if you create something related to this game and make money off of it, chances are high that you're going to be bound by some or all of these terms.
But that's not all. This can also impact games outside of D&D. Many of their competitors (like Pathfinder) use a modified version of the d20 system, which was up to this point protected by all previous versions of the OGL. The terms of the new OGL aren't just designed to exert control over their own community, but also demand royalties from their competitors.
The last time something like this happened (the dark, dark days of 4th Edition), the community survived by jumping ship to Pathfinder. Evidently they're taking steps to stop that from happening this time.
What can we do about it?
And here we reach the all-important question. Learning about the problem is the first and easiest step, but what we can we do stop it? This is where I can finally give you guys some good news: we can stop this from happening, if we band together and act quickly!
The new license hasn't been released yet, and depending on how big of a stink we make over the next few weeks, it may never be released. Wizards of the Coast is walking on shaky ground here... not just ethically, but also legally and financially. And in kicking the hornet's nest like this, they may have overreached.
So first thing's first: Make a big stink about this. Spread this news over social media, and let it be known that you're willing to stop buying Wizards of the Coast products if this goes through. Despite D&D's newfound popularity, tabletop gaming is still relatively niche. They lack the mass market appeal that's necessary to survive a sustained boycott.
If the new license is released, support third-party creators however you can, and don't touch the new license with a ten-foot poll. WotC is trying to revoke the previous OGLs, but there's good reason to believe they can't actually do that; those things were explicity designed to be irrevocable, and there's a really good chance this whole power grab crashes and burns in the courtroom. So stall for time. Avoid publishing anything under the new license for as long as you feasibly can.
This new "Open" Game License has the potential to devastate the tabletop gaming space. Don't allow it to happen without a fight. Please spread the word!

Note
Its years late for this nitpick and honestly the answer is probably just time constraints, but why didn't Ruby gather more attention when she was let in early to Beacon. Maybe not immediately but I imagine somebody would probably let it leak that a girl got in 2 years early to a prestigious combat school, there would probably be some journalists interested in getting that story. It would make Ruby's line about "normal knees" make sense too.
Yeah, even if the story didn't want to introduce a lot of outside conflict (via things like journalist), I would have loved to see this impacting Ruby's relationships more. We've got Weiss commenting that she looks too young to be at Beacon and... that's it. That's the extent of Ruby's age -- something that's initially presented as a Big Deal - having an influence on her time at school. Why not have Weiss specifically take issue with her as a leader because she's too young, rather than just the fact that it's not her getting what she 'deserves'? Why not have Pyrrha feel a kinship with Ruby, bonding over the fact that they've both been singled out as extraordinarily talented fighters at a young age? (Which would also go a long way towards creating an emotional impact when Ruby sees Pyrrha die. It's horrible for the audience, certainly, but fans have long pointed out that Ruby and Pyrrha barely knew one another.) Give me Jaune comparing Ruby to his little sisters, Blake shrugging at her age because outside the kingdoms no one cares how old you are, only that you can fight, a version of Yang who loves her sister, undoubtedly, but was also looking forward to striking out on her own and forming new friendships without a little sis tagging along (she does ditch Ruby for the shadow friends first chance she gets), more teachers like Glynda who are hesitant to bend the rules in such a manner, upper classmen who are jealous that this kid is landing assignments even they're not ready for, a Tai who lost his wife to grimm and is now seeing both his girls enter that profession at the same time, one of whom is still just a kid, and dear god he's not emotionally ready for an empty nest when what's outside the nest is so very, very dangerous.
It is a nitpick in the sense that we got a solid plot for Volumes 1-3 and the lack of all this (and similar ideas) certainly doesn't ruin the story, but it does reflect on how haphazardly RWBY has always been written. It's nothing new to say that RT didn't really know what they were doing with RWBY for a long time, resulting in a huge number of missed opportunities -- that first draft feel that's still influencing the story today. Often when we have broader criticisms, like Ruby's lack of character development post-Volume 4 (at least, that's when I personally think she stagnated), you can trace the problem back to traits that were introduced and then dropped. Ruby is a "most dangerous weapon ever designed" prodigy with a wealth of weapon knowledge and an ancient Silver Eyes power, getting into a prestigious school two years early after her mother mysteriously died in the same profession, but she lacks her mother's (implied) confidence and charisma, instead demonstrating a marked social awkwardness that, again, reflects back on her age. What a fascinating character packed with potential! Too bad Ruby's age was only a concern for the first few episodes, her love of weapons has disappeared, her social awkwardness was never an obstacle to making friends, her eyes were mastered in half a Volume, and her mother's death is mentioned once seven years into the series -- without her sister there to benefit from that emotional beat. It's nothing new to say, but it always bears repeating: RWBY is really good at introducing awesome concepts and really bad at doing anything satisfying with them. It's why the show thrives in fandom where others can play with those ideas and is struggling so badly in the canon itself. It functions best as a sandbox, not a show.

even though i think the fanon design of BEN is a bit goofy and unfortunately will perpetuate the odd behavior around his age, hes so fun??? Like fanon BEN is such a silly fuckin dude. And he has so much range in regards to his fanon interpretations, whereas you only get what u have in the ARG with the Event Network.
but with Ben, youre getting this wide range of a much more human behaving person and i think its really cool that such an impactful and important part of internet culture's history surrounding horror is seen in so many ways by so many different people.
like
just like he inspired people to make all the later gaming creepypastas, and how heavily his tropes have affected the internet, he stills inspires people to create now. Like can yall believe that? I know weve all got our grievances about Alex, but you cant deny the genius that came to BEN. Even if u only count the pre 2020 installments of the arg.
Ben's like, this unforgettable entity that even if we dont know him weve been influenced by him in some way if we engage in internet horror content. He was a baseline, one of the earliest game based creepypastas (p sure hes either the actual first or the second) and one of the most popular. And so early on in the rise of the next internet generation's development? He's infected every corner of the internet outside of horror too if you look close enough at it, to see how every action branched off. He really is like a little virus in our computers, i love him so much.

A Prologue to Amniotes
Part III - The “Age of Amphibians”
A long time has passed since my previous blog post. Two months, or around twenty million years, depending on how you count.
We are now in the middle of the Carboniferous (late Mississippian for the Americans out there). Stegocephalians are out of fashion, new models of amphibians have been released. They’re actually able to spend most of their time on land! (well, a few went back to the water, but still)
Unfortunately, there’s no real word for this faunal shift. An interesting concept that we can use, however, is the one of megadynasty. They’re basically evolutionary faunas but on land, an idea introduced by Brenchley and Harper in 1998. Basically, Megadynasty I corresponds to the amphibians and pelycosaurians, Megadynasty II is the therapsids, and Megadynasty III is the dinosaurs. You can quickly see how this is more than approximative, as I doubt Ichthyostega and Dimetrodon have much in common to justify this grouping. Oh, and they forgot the entire Cenozoic.
A better system would be to have a “Megadynasty 0″ corresponding to the stegocephalians (when the “going on land” functionality was still in beta), with I for the later amphibians and II for the pelycosaurians. Here’s a schema:
Tumblr media
Seven-megadynasty paradigm, by Quark-Nova (CC-SA 3.0)
Are the amphibians really the only ones to dominate the ecosystem? Certainly not - giant insects and arthropods would certainly like to have a word with them. And, quite honestly, a two-meter long Arthropleura or a 350 kilogram Hibbertopterus would probably win an argument against me on intimidation alone. But, unfortunately for them, I’m still alive and they aren’t - fact is, amphibians and their descendants ultimately did a better job at shaping the megafauna. Which is why the goal of this blog is to talk about synapsid evolution, rather than giant insect evolution.
But what was the Carboniferous like exactly? Popular conception pictures it as a mostly uniform “rainforest” of giant fern trees. And, while it’s not completely wrong, something is quite often left out of the picture. The Middle Carboniferous saw the beginning of the Karoo ice age, an icehouse world that would last until the Permian and see large ice sheets cover much of the planet. But the ice age wasn’t at its peak yet, and amphibians could comfortably chill in the rainforest. For now, at least.
So, what were they doing? Quite a lot, actually. A lot of them decided that becoming l o n g was the way to go, with adelospondyls, aistopods and various other groups ranging in body plans from reptilian ferret to actual snake.
Tumblr media
Rhynchonkos, a ferret microsaur, by Smokeybjb (CC-SA 3.0)
A lot of these groups were historically classified as “lepospondyls”, with everyone’s favourite boomerang-headed Diplocaulus, although early tetrapod classification is conspicuously inconsistent - Rhynchonkos up there might actually be an early reptile! Lepospondyls themselves might be more related to amniotes, to modern amphibians, or away from the branch leading to both entirely.
Another group that dominated the middle Carboniferous, temnospondyls, are more well-grounded - both phylogenetically and in terms of their terrestrial lifestyle. The likely ancestors of modern frogs and salamanders, a lot of them were ironically way less reliant on water, with scales allowing them to retain humidity more efficiently (modern amphibians are smooth). They also had way more game impact than their descendants, with even early forms like Capetus reaching a meter and a half, and being more crocodile-like in appearance.
Tumblr media
Capetus, an early temnospondyl, by Dmitry Bogdanov (CC-SA 3.0)
Unfortunately, a design flaw still remained, as their eggs and babies still needed water to develop in. Although some temnospondyls had an innovative solution: laying their eggs in humid crevices, allowing them to reproduce even far away from actual bodies of water!
Another group was on the rise, concurrently with temnospondyls. Reptiliomorphs are often discussed as major players in the middle Carboniferous fauna, although this word hides a lot of complexity under the hood. In fact, any creature closer to amniotes than to modern amphibians is classified as a “reptiliomorph” - even possibly lepospondyls. Really, the trend of gradual independence from water wasn’t a linear path, but several groups trying out innovations concurrently. Internal fertilization, direct development (skipping the problematic tadpole stage), and ultimately, one that would revolutionize life on land: the amniotic egg.

The Owl House Finale: my thoughts
! spoilers, obviously !
I thought it was alright.
Which is pretty sad considering how freaking good the show was.
Now it's difficult to make a list of things I liked and things I didn't like and you will see why.
But for tradition's sake:
things I liked
the overall idea of it with Belos taking over the titan's corpse and all that, pretty dang awesome
not making the Collector an actual villain and instead showing how they're really just a child lashing out because he doesn't know how to deal with these complex emotions
the amount of lore we got on the Collector and titan magic
the ending/post-credit scene, seeing everyone happy and healing without it being a super cliché "and suddenly everything's okay" thing was cool, the character designs were on fucking point and I especially liked the scene with Hunter and Willow at Flapjack's gravestone
Raine being an absolute BAMF, I love them and they fucking rule
Hunter and Darius reuniting, short but sweet
on that note: Darius and Alador in the credits?? hello, sassy middle-aged dads having a thing™??? love to see it
Raine and Eda reuniting, just these two, man
King's genderqueer/genderfucked/whatever parent? marvellous
Luz and Amity getting their happy ending without some random, annoying pseudo break-up plot point or something thrown in there
now, things I didn't like
The pacing was fucking atrocious and really dims all the other aspects I liked, just scene after scene after scene.
In a big character-driven finale like this it's vital to give the emotional impact time to develop, to let it breathe, let the audience sit with a hard-hitting scene like when Luz 'dies' going up against Belos.
And this obviously isn't Dana's or any of the team's fault, it's clearly because of the mouse and the way it disrespects and seems to straight up despise its own creators.
Especially for a show like this where we get the most amount of openly shown queer affection in the final minutes of the final episode of a show that was cut short for "not fitting the brand". Of course Owl House is revolutionary in its portrayal of queerness in a Disney show but the shadow of the mouse looms large and can be felt even here which is just, it's tragic, man, seriously.
The pacing is also what causes my other big problem with the finale: the hollow victory.
Well of course Luz has defeated Belos at the end, has liberated the BI, healing can take place, rebuilding can start.
But it feels hollow. Of course Luz epically destroys Coloniser McGoo and seeing Raine, Eda and King stomp on him was funny. But I feel there was a distinct lack of catharsis here.
Now this might be because from the beginning of this show I've been firmly in camp villain-enjoyer and was really excited about how they were gonna develop Belos as a villain but I didn't like the lack of "depth" regarding him we got in the finale.
Now I'm not talking about the Philip Wittebane sob story or the power of love, friendship and redemption or anything, puritan fascist man can rot in fucking hell forever, but it feels like Luz didn't actually defeat him.
Belos went from representing a larger system of beliefs about the world (human supremacy, colonisation, religious dogma, the absolutely batshit ideas underlying the concept of killing and then resurrecting your own brother "for his own good", etc.) to just like big kaiju slime wreaking havoc and spitting magic fire.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good epic fight against just a huge gross monster that wants to destroy the world (which yes, Belos ultimately is) but not when that happens at the cost of your villain's complexity.
Because now Luz has destroyed this huge evil slime thing, but that could've been any other villain or monster, it lacks that narrative oomph of defeating Belos as a character who represents bigotry, intense selfishness, abuse and ultimately a worldview in which some people are destined for annihilation due to their perceived inferiority.
This is because, at least in my opinion, Belos' strength as a villainous character isn't his magic or anything like that, it is his prowess in manipulation and the way he can make other characters believe that his depraved views are correct. I much rather would've liked that Luz and him had had a verbal standoff before actually fighting, him preying on her fears of being just like him and having those resolved together with his defeat instead of being seemingly resolved in that Collector dream sequence at the beginning.
Because it now seems like Luz' emotional arc is divorced from her fight against the main villain of this whole show which to me feels very unsatisfactory. A villain or obstacle is what drives the narrative, it's what provokes the protagonist(s) into action and especially Luz and Belos had this well-written dynamic with both being humans but extremely different from each other, yet Luz feeling terrible because she helped Philip discover the light glyph. That was cool, that was interesting and removing that element feels kind of boring to me.
It makes it feel like Belos and the system he represents were never really defeated, like Philip Wittebane is dead as he should be but the concept of "Belos" lives on, which could've been interesting if properly developed, but then again there wasn't enough time to do that.
Ultimately I feel it's on a surface level a pretty decent finale for a series like this, it hit all the right beats and tied this amazing show up as best as it could.
On the other hand I personally feel that it was hindered from being a finale this awesome show truly deserves by the mouse. Imagine how good it could've been if it had the time to develop the plot at a slower pace, if the show could've taken its time to develop the lore and the emotional beats of the story instead of giving last-minute exposition dumps and trying to fit all its eggs in one basket over the course of a measly 45 minutes.
It was good, but it could've been great, and that's just tragic.
I'm looking forward to any future projects by Dana Terrace because her and the team are truly brilliant artists and I hope their next projects will work out without all this corporate meddling.
Finally I want to say that obviously this was all just my opinion, I'm not pretending to speak the ultimate gospel truth and if you loved the finale that's cool, if you hated it that's also cool, you can have whatever opinion you like. This wasn't some sort of essay to convince anyone of my position, it was just me rambling about a show I like and maybe over time my opinions will change, this show is by no means a hill I'm willing to die on.
Don't take this post all too seriously and have a great day :)

Retro Gaming Consoles: Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis Back then, gaming changed big time thanks to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Sega Genesis. They moved things forward in cool ways we still see today. NES recovered gaming after the 1983 crash by doing cool new stuff. Its intelligent design choices were key. However, Sega Genesis was a formidable rival, with better graphics and sound than wowed players. Their console war shifted gaming standards in significant ways. Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) In 1985, NES brought arcade fun to living rooms nationwide. Games were played at home like never before! It became essential in culture, defining how a whole generation played games. It wasn't just another system – it was a genuine phenomenon. How Old Games Impact Modern Ones Retro gaming inspires modern games a lot, not just for nostalgic feelings. Developers today often borrow design ideas from classic titles, mixing old flavors into new games. They learn from vintage games, especially how simple, user-friendly designs worked well back then. Blending that into modern titles improves the gaming experience while connecting to the past. Game Design That Feels Old-School Pixel art graphics have made a comeback in indie games, as new titles draw heavily from retro styles. This revival comes from indie devs creatively mixing traditional elements into their projects. It's famous for PC gaming, appealing to different types of players. It shows that vintage-inspired games still have a significant influence. Look at Crossy Road – it breathes new life into an old concept like Frogger. Combining established ideas with fresh approaches can make distinct, engaging gameplay experiences. Classic Games' Lessons Easy gameplay principles and graphics are prioritized over complexity, old video games teach us. Today's titles still use these ideas, showing vintage games' lasting appeal. Even with limits, developers created clever 8-bit games. Online tournaments and events bring fans together.  Players swap tips, chat about favorite games, and work as teams. Elevate Your PC Revolution with GenAI Magic
Tumblr media
PC Revolution with GenAI
They discussed the PC Renaissance three years ago. Even while the PC has always facilitated communication and collaboration, in 2020, the heyday of remote employment and online education, we realized just how essential the PC is to every facet of our existence. At that time, he detailed our future goals, our investment strategy, and our predictions for the development of the PC Revolution-human interface.
They now have access to yet another crucial period in his life. This time, generative AI (GenAI) is used. The developments we’ll witness from GenAI will be comparable to the arrival of the PC Revolution , which brought previously unheard-of levels of productivity to the globe, forty years ago. What does this actually signify for the PC’s future, though? What impact will GenAI have on the PC Revolution-human interaction?
First, the present moment
Let’s first take a look at where they have been and where we are right now in order to comprehend the potential benefits of AI. Since AI and machine learning have been around for a while, there is a good chance that you have already used some form of AI in your daily life. They was an early adopter of AI who realized the potential for computers to boost productivity and made computers smarter, more self-aware, and more user-aware.
For instance, Dell Optimizer1 employs artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically set itself to make you more productive by, among other things, running programs more quickly, conserving battery life, and reducing background noise during conference calls. Because of this, we can confidently claim to have the most intelligent commercial PCs in the world.2
The potential of the PC Revolution to contribute to the development of GenAI grows as its power does. Our Dell Precision workstations enable CPU multi-threading, GPU and multi-GPU acceleration, and more. With the aid of all this processing power, app developers may design, build, prototype, and deploy GenAI models by training massive AI models with up to 500 million parameters directly on the device.
The Near-Term Opportunities of GenAI
GenAI will affect the way them work and live. AI-enabled PCs Revolution are increasingly being discussed, yet there is still plenty to envisage. They could see how the recent launch of Microsoft Copilot would enable GenAI to achieve new heights of efficiency. Demo after demo showed him how quickly he could gather and produce knowledge. This prioritizes ideas and frees up your time for invention, creativity, and problem-solving.
As Microsoft introduces the new Copilot in Windows, they are closely cooperating with them. Users of Windows 11 can already begin enjoying these advantages. They won’t stop there, though. You’ll notice that we’re committed to becoming the top PC Revolution supplier for the AI age, with added attention on and investments in intelligence, security, and being a dependable end-to-end AI adviser.
The user experience will then need to be improved by PCs Revolution with language modeling, language processing, and machine learning capabilities as he asks more of our gadgets. Many efficiencies are brought about by these experiences, including cost effectiveness, increased privacy and security, decreased latency, and sustainability advantages. A new architecture that doesn’t only rely on the CPU or GPU for processing will also be necessary. They is actively striving to make this new architecture a reality with partners in the industry. They are eager to share more with you.
The Long-Term Prospects of GenAI
In the years to come, they envisions your future PC Revolution as a genuine digital buddy. PCs will start enhancing human performance rather than just increasing productivity. You will need to rethink how you now operate with your laptop and desktop computer in order to do this.
For instance, there will be more non-text-based ways to guide technology to create a bi-directional encounter between humans and PC Revolution rather than largely command-and-control interactions driven by your typing on a keyboard. Visualize a future in which you can cooperate or co-create using speech, gestures, and visual commands. Imagine letting your computer read your emotions, expressions, tone of voice, or even changes in your typing style for a deeper experience that provides the outcome you want, exactly how you will benefit from it. Your computer experience will change from looking for information to providing it, from reading to comprehending it, and from editing to leading it.
It’s thrilling to consider what the future holds for PC Revolution as a whole, not just for individual devices. They draws inspiration from human experiences to propel human growth, and our wide range of goods, services, and solutions will be crucial in enabling this future.
They are at a turning point.
They has 30 years of experience in the IT sector. Although it has always been fast-paced and exhilarating, the possibility that lies ahead is unlike anything that has occurred since the advent of personal computers (PCs) 40 years ago. If we claimed to have all the solutions, he would be lying. The additional advantages alone are so great.
But they can assure you that growth will continue to revolve on people. They’re at a turning point thanks to recent advancements in software, upcoming changes in design, new service possibilities, and continuous research into human connection and experience. Better and more rapid changes will be made to end user experiences. They has been given the chance to transform the PC Revolution experience.

Sustainability: the Latest Trend in Furniture
Highly related with art and fashion, the furniture industry inherently has its trends. So, what are the latest trends in the industry? As a company that has been in this industry for 20 years and has always kept a close eye on what’s going on in it, we at Shanghai Yadan Office Furniture can give you a definite answer, that is sustainability.
Tumblr media
Why is sustainability such an important trend in the furniture industry today?
In this day and age, everyone has a strong awareness of environmental protection. In every industry we consume, including cuisine, fashion, travel, we want to do things as sustainably as possible. Therefore, it is even more crucial for furniture, an object that everyone places around themselves and needs to touch every day, to incorporate this concept.
What is sustainability and what does it include?
In general, sustainability is about us human-beings co-existing and living in a good way on this planet. In our everyday life, it is typically associated with countering major environmental problems. These include climate change and loss of biodiversity. They also include loss of ecosystem services, land degradation, and air and water pollution.
Sustainability is also the core value for us at Shanghai Yadan Office Furniture, as a company that produces high-quality steel furniture that has a positive impact on the environment. We pay great attention to sustainability and environment, and run the concepts through our production process and product designs.

How is sustainability reflected in furniture?
Sustainability in the furniture industry is reflected in the choice of materials and the measures taken in the production process, such as using materials that are less harmful to nature and making furniture recyclable at the end of its life cycle. In terms of production process, carbon emissions and sewage discharge are now receiving great attention by many manufacturers who focus on sustainability. There are related laws and policies regarding these issues in the industry as well.

And this is the area where we at Shanghai Yadan, as a steel furniture manufacturer that places sustainability as core value, excel at, as furniture made of steel is recyclable, does no more harm to the dwindling vegetation cover, and contains no harmful compositions. On the production front, although we do not directly produce steel, we will check whether the environmental indicators of our suppliers meet the standards. On the finished end, we have strict quality control on the powder coating tech, which checks carefully whether the coating has no harmful chemical components and other polluting substances to the environment.

Steel is such a wonderful material for making furniture, both outwardly and interiorly. In fact, steel and metal materials are themselves a fashionable trend in the furniture industry at a time when people have been living with wooden and synthetic materials for years and years.
The bigger picture
Sustainable development is not only the trend of furniture, but also the trend of nature, human beings, the great home we live at and so on. As we become more aware of the impact that our actions have on the environment and on each other, sustainability is becoming a guiding principle for all aspects of our lives. Shanghai Yadan firmly stands behind this idea and is dedicated to the fight for a more sustainable future, working alongside environmentalists and other advocates to create furniture that is beautiful, functional, and environmentally responsible.
