soap's whole deal being sniper and demolitions gets me going bc on the surface they sound so different but when you get into it, you realise it's bc soap's smart
sniping is all math; calculating distances and wind interference and bullet drop. something i think people overlook is he was listed as a sniper first so it can be implied that he's better at it than demolitions. he does more sniping in both campaigns than demolitions work; in capture or kill, ghost specifically calls on him to take down the aq snipers
and demolitions is math with a hit of chemistry; knowing what mixes with what, knowing how much to use, recognising environmental factors and adjusting accordingly. it's not just about the boom; so much work goes into contained/ planned explosions. especially when having enough power for a breacher charge and not bringing down the whole building is the difference between mission success and failure
the chemical bombs he makes in alone can't just be any old cleaners, they have to have the correct reaction to each other; he just knew off the top of his head what would mix with what to create what reaction. he would also potentially have to recognise them by sight/smell bc they would’ve been written in spanish
soap would also have to know architecture; recognising structural integrity and weak points so he knows exactly where to plant a charge to bring it down and how it'll come down
he has an incredible soldier's mind people just forget that bc he's sociable which itself is a skill
we know he tends to buck against orders he doesn't agree with like when he pushes back against ghost in capture or kill and shepherd when he tells them to release hassan
he gets closer to people and sees if he can trust them and that's when he follows them without question. really think about how he talks to alejandro and rudy; he asks about their home and alejandro's family and rudy's relationship with him. those aren't questions you ask a stranger after a few hours of knowing them. that's not even touching on his relationship with ghost
he also deliberately brings people of higher ranks down to his level; talking informally with ghost and giving him a shoulder punch, addressing alejandro (a colonel!!) by his first name and rudy by his nickname despite literally just meeting them. he personalises all of them and it’s in direct opposition to the reason most characters do that; it’s not due to insubordination or lack of respect, the more he respects and trusts someone, the more casual he is with them
he digs into people; he wants to know what makes them tick and that determines if he can one, trust them and two, follow their orders. once he decides that, he's the ultimate soldier; he bleeds loyalty which makes him vicious when that loyalty is taken for granted
he isn't naive or bubbly or insecure; he's an incredibly smart and aware soldier. he's aggressive and bloodthirsty and loyal and intuitive and i love him so much

Hey remember when I said that this was the most frustrating thing about being a Helluva Boss enjoyer?
Yeah I was wrong.
The most frustrating thing about being a Helluva Boss enjoyer is explicitly stating multiple times that I like show and then get called an anti and homophobic and media illiterate when I complain about the direction it has taken.
I LIKE the comedy
I LIKE the animation and artstyle
I LIKE the more serious plotlines like the government agents plot and the Cherubs plot
I LIKE the themes of friendship and found family
I even like most of the songs!
And ofc the voice cast slays every time
But just because your show has angst and tears and drama and sad music doesn't automatically make it "good".
Just because your characters are queer doesn't automatically make them good or well written characters
This fandom is so frustrating to deal with when you want to express your more nuanced takes of it
This is probably gonna be the last post I make about this subject and about Helluva Boss in general, this shit is too stupid to deal with

Fête des Pères (TF2 SpyDad Thing)
————————————————————
Scout sat on his bed, clutching the card he had made. He had always been an artist by nature. He looked at it with a weird feeling well in his chest. What was he thinking? He hated Spy. He was sure of it. The arrogant bastard. Who cares if he "apologized?" It was fake. It had to be. There was nothing about that man that could be real.
So it didn't matter. The apologies, the attempts to reconcile, even the rare moments where forgiveness felt like a tangible thing. Scout crumpled the card. Swallowing the feelings, the anger, the sadness, all of it. He let out a shaky breath, rising to his feet. He needed to take a walk. He just needed to clear his mind, and throw away this damn card.
But even as he walked the halls of the base, anger bubbling inside him, he found himself in front of the one place he knew Spy would be. He had half a mind to start another screaming match with him. Not that it would be productive, but surely it would quell the resentment. He stared at the door, holding up his hand to pound at the door.
Spy sat in his smoking room as was common for most moments of downtime he had on the base. Cigarette in one hand, a scribbled crayon drawing of a family tightly clutched in the other. As if holding onto it would keep his latch on a distant memory would keep it from fading away. It was fuzzy in his mind, but he could still recall it.
It was early fall. The weather still cooling down from the blistering heat of summer. Spy leaned back in his armchair, watching as the young boy in front of him drawing with a purpose. His entire being focused on making the drawing perfect. Spy chuckled to himself, amused at the antics. The young boy suddenly shot up, triumphantly exclaiming its perfection with a look of unyielding pride. Half the words were spelled wrong, and the drawing was nonsensical. But Spy smiled none the less, ruffling the boys hair as he praised him for his effort.
He leaned back, tucking the drawing away and putting out the cigarette before rubbing his temple. The bittersweet feeling of nostalgia and regret settled inside him. He couldn't sit in here anymore. The room suddenly felt too small. Everything was too much. He stood up quickly and opened the door.
Scout was there. Crouched down, about to just slip something under the door, and just for a split second, Spy saw the little boy he left. Scout stood up quickly, chuckling nervously. He uncrumpled the card a bit more, trying to make it at least look slightly neater. Without looking at the man in front of him, he handed over the card.
"Hey, uh..." he scratched the back of his neck, "I guess it's Father's Day or whatever, so you know, happy that, I guess." He said quietly, not looking him in the eye.
Spy accepted the card with a polite thank you. Before stepping back, opening the door to the room, ignoring his previous attempts to leave. Scout was here, and he was sure that would make the room a little less small. Scout was here, and it was Father's Day, and Spy wasn't going to miss spending it with him.

Happy Father's Day, Spy!

Qrow’s Semblance is Fortune! 🐦⬛
I talked about this briefly before, having speculated that Clover’s pin carries on his good luck after death or that Qrow has just done a lot of training mentally and/or physically. @benevolentslut had some amazing additions as well & I want to sum up this theory for you as best as I can as we reached similar conclusions even before I had read her reblog.
Qrow has only been in the negative all his life, mentally and emotionally.
This man has had barely any positivity in his life.
"His whole life he's been the epitome of cynicism and pessimism." - @benevolentslut
Qrow grew up under constant stress & threat of those around him.
Needless to say, but I don't think he could trust anyone he grew up around except maybe Raven.
Then he has to constantly worry about being found out by the other huntsmen! Also growing up with the threat of huntsmen and Grimm the entire time!
Then Oz drops the whole Salem problem on him & I'm sure that didn't help his mental health in the slightest!
"His sister leaves him and their team, and then summer disappears." - @benevolentslut Yeahhhh he is losing everyone close to him in one way or another! That cannot be a fun experience!
This look like the face of a guy that's doing okay?
I'm just going to copy paste this here as I hadn't noticed it & it feels worth noting that the intensity of his misfortune seems to increase with the increasing mental strain.
While we don't know for sure that all of these things are a byproduct of Qrow's misfortune semblance, it certainly isn't out of the realm of possibility. Notice the worsening of his mental health resulting in potentially more disastrous outcomes. 😰
"we see him blaming himself constantly for everything that goes wrong, and it only causes that to become more true." - @benevolentslut
She lists a lot more examples of where Qrow's semblance has potentially worked this way in the original post. Clover comes along & starts lifting him up, giving him actual hope. He now has a little seed of hope planted in him. 🍀
Wow, Qrow is doing so good for himself lately! I sure hope nothing-
Oh... oh no. From his perspective Ruby & Yang could literally be dead. He is stricken with grief as he watches it all unfold & probably sunk back down into a negative spot mentally. He may even blame himself in some way.
When you're this low, there's a saying that goes "nowhere to go but up."
I firmly believe that Qrow would see things that way, especially after reaching his lowest point. He can only do his best to help those around him. Though he's the most alone he's ever been, he's becoming a part of a new community where people help one another. In that sense, it's impossible to be alone. In spite of it all, he slowly finds his mental health improving! Ruby's message to the world is bringing people together! 🌹
"and we see him take up clover's role, both in terms of how he's helping out around shade, and more literally, in the unmissable parallel where he catches the guy who trips." - @benevolentslut
Ruby & Clover have both filled him with hope & he's more optimistic than he's ever been, which results in bursts good fortune! ✨
There's also already a premise for shifts in mental health and trauma resulting in semblance evolution.
Cinder betrayed Neo & so she winds up in the Ever After & through her form changes is showing us that she now has negative feelings towards Cinder.
She's so upset that her semblance starts to make multiple clones of her which it has never been able to do before. Her Overactive Imagination semblance has evolved due to the state of her mental health.
Her semblance begins to evolve so much to where she can create entire architectural structures and buildings out of it!
She can even use it to talk through the people she recreates, something she's not physically capable of herself.
While we do have to take into account that the Ever After plays by rules that are a little bit different at times; this absolutely confirms that semblances, much like people, can change & grow! 💪
My conclusion: Volume 10 & beyond will show Qrow's personal semblance evolution as he finds out that his power is actually Fortune itself & the ability to control it, good and the bad.
