August 2018.
It was the beginning of a new intern year. One of Ethan’s least favourite weeks. He was requested to be at the opening address for the year. He was not a department head but he agreed, reluctantly. He did not have patience for rookie errors at the best of times but with Naveen as unwell as he is, he’d much rather be putting his effort into that.
He came through a waiting room and a patient collapsed.
“Rookie, get in here” he screamed, pointing at a young woman.
They conducted the assessment together and the young doctor noted a bruise that was forming quickly. Against his better judgment he encouraged her as he could see that she was on the right track. She correctly diagnosed the issue. They needed to do an emergency thoracotomy. He could see her right hand shaking. Instead of yelling at her to make the incision he placed his hand over hers. A tingly feeling that he was not expecting went up his arm. She made the incision and the patient was going to live. He knew he should have congratulated the young doctor but the sensation he felt caught him off guard so he ripped her a new one about how superficial and amateur her skills were. He looked at her name badge. Dr Casey Valentine. He stormed off and was angry at himself. He had matched Dr Valentine to here and despite his outburst he did see some of what he saw in the application but what was striking him was how attractive she was and the tingly sensation when their hands touched. He shook his head, she was an intern, nothing was going to happen. The day went on and Dr Valentine had a patient code but she figured it out eventually. He was expecting a chewing out from her but she was appreciative for the chance. I told her that listening to her patient was the best thing she did and that would make her a good diagnostician. Later that night I was at Donahue’s. I should have gone home as I knew I was not going to have a quiet drink tonight but she was there. If I thought she looked attractive this morning, well the thoughts I had now were beyond sinful. She eventually comes over and orders me a scotch, neat. I then order two specials and she enjoys it. She then goes back to her friends. I finish my drink and head off. The events of the day going around in my head, the thoracotomy, the signing of her book, solving what was wrong with her patient, then they turn sinful. I tell myself she is here to learn, the reason I am having these thoughts is because I am comparing her to an application and the stress of the day. The tingly sensation was real though and so was the enjoyment. My mind goes to our roles, I am there to teach, not get involved in any other way. I do not need that type of relationship. “She is my intern, nothing can or will happen” I keep telling myself as I have a shower but the cold does not kill my erection and the thoughts stray again to that outfit she wore and I pleasure myself. It was just a release I tell myself but I knew it was her that was driving it. “Fuck Ramsey, what have you gotten yourself into” I say to myself as I fall asleep.
A week later I am shook. Naveen’s illness is getting too hard to disguise now and he wants to quit. I am ropable and not because it will leave the team in disarray but he also refuses to let me continue treating him. I do not know how but I convince him to let me treat him in secret in one of the more completed areas of the new wing. I am still at a loss, however. There are so many symptoms that contradict.
The year went on. There is an emergency, an office building fire. I go down to assist and I see her. She tells me that Delores Hudson is not going to treat herself. I accompany her. At that moment I felt like a bad friend. I had not seen Delores for a few months now. We arrive at her room and I am surprised to see her pregnant.
“What trouble have you gotten yourself into this time Delores?”
She said she was filing but was too long in getting to the stairs and the lift was out but one of our paramedics rescued her.
Casey does the examination asking her how she knew me. I state that she was my first patient when I was an intern. Casey then asked if I was always so handsome and I was taken aback. It was not a word I had heard used to describe me very often, especially in these walls. Delores stated apparently I have improved with age. Casey was concerned about the high blood pressure. Delores then is concerned about a frog she had brought for her baby. Casey said she would track it down with me. After we get a sample.
We make our way to the scene of a fire and we park near where the emergency vehicles would have parked. We look around and she spots a stuffed frog in the drain. I hold her as she reaches and grabs it. We arrive back at the hospital and we get the frog sterilised. I retrieve the frog and take it to Delores. We have a lovely chat. Due to me being busy I never got around to rescheduling our last meet up. I ask her why she never said about her pregnancy and Delores said she did not want me reading about it in an email. I applaud her for keeping the child, given the circumstances of the father not being involved and she said it was a hard decision but Delores reminded me she has always wanted a child and felt this was her last chance and that is what swayed her. I assure her she would be a great mum and Delores was appreciative of that.
Casey comes back and she has the results. High levels of protein indicative of Preeclampsia. We go in and Casey tells her what is happening. Delores is upset and angry as she says she feels fine and the baby is moving. Casey states that there is a chance it will survive if delivered now. Delores wants more time, even if it is just a week but I tell her I will give her the night. We both leave. I can see Delores is distressed but feel giving her some time alone will help her come to her senses. I take Casey off the case. I tell her that she is not ready for the worse, I know it is a lie but it is the best I have. I tell her to go home. I make my way to the office. All of a sudden my world is off its axis. I scream in frustration. It was bad enough that I am potentially going to lose Naveen if I do not find out what is happening, it is bad enough that Harper wants the interns to compete for a spot on his team but now Delores. Delores is the friendship I didn't know I needed. It was uncomplicated, yet caring, something I knew I always needed but never felt I deserved until I had it. I plan the speech I do not want to give them my pager goes off. Delores has been whisked away for an emergency c-section. I make my way to the OR deck. I use the intercom and I was advised that Delores had started to seize and that she reached full eclampsia. Delores does not make it but the baby does. I make my way to the waiting room. Delores did not deserve to go that way. I was also dreading telling her sister Alma. I am wallowing when Casey appears. She states she missed a page. I tell her what happened. I can see that she is distressed and then she goes. I stay for a few minutes to collect myself. I then make my way to the nursery. I overhear the nurse tell Casey that Delores had requested the baby be named. I then made my way over. I am told that she had named the baby after me. A lump forms in my throat. I need to grieve but now is not the moment. We watch over baby Hudson, Casey refusing to leave. I share about when I lost my first patient. I go and get us some coffee. She is appreciative and I marvel at how I am sharing coffee from my private machine with an intern but she is not just any intern. She is someone who cares deeply about her patients and outcomes and I know I should not be having feelings for her, she is a subordinate after all but I do. She seems like someone I can trust and a team player. My mind wonders to the announcement that I have to make the next morning. The fellowship competition. I know a majority of those who will enter will only be doing it for the sake of doing so but I know if Casey enters she will be genuine in wanting to enter. Casey falls asleep on my shoulder and it takes all of my willpower not to move and make the position comfortable for the both of us. Eventually she wakes and baby Ethan is getting stronger for which I am glad, he already is a fighter like his mum.
I make the announcement and prepare for the barrage of interns wanting in. My mind is in two places today. Naveen and contacting Alma. That was harrowing. I had broken the news to family members before but when it is one of your closest friends it is harrowing, especially when you add in that your nephew was born prematurely. Alma gets on the next flight to Boston and she comes straight to Edenbrook. She meets her nephew. She stated that if anything was to happen to Delores that Delores wanted Alma to have custody of the child. Alma asks me to be Ethan’s Godfather. I humbly accept. I make arrangements to assist with any medical bills and look at transport options for Ethan to Illinois when he is strong enough. We have coffee in my office.
“Thank you for being a friend to Delores all this time Ethan. I know I jested you both in the beginning about being together romantically, but I could see that the friendship you had was something you both needed and that in itself was beautiful.”
“When I met Delores I still had scars from a close friendship and a relationship that went south and badly. When I moved here I was not looking for friendships but the coffee recommendation for our first meeting outside of hospital swayed me and I am glad that I decided to go that day. I have had issues trusting people since I was eleven and Delores helped me realize not everyone wants to be close to me for nefarious reasons. I am going to miss her.” Alma gives me a hug. She thanks me for all I did for Delores and she asked that I thank Dr Valentine also for keeping watch over her nephew. I state that I will.
I head home. I pour myself one of my more expensive scotches and drink it in one gulp. I finally let go of the emotions that I have been ignoring all day. Two people who I have cared about the most in my life outside of my family gone or going. Neither deserve what they went or going through and there was nothing more that I can or could do about it. Right now it was clear that I was not in control and that terrified me. I was starting to feel the anger I felt when I was a boy who had been walked out on by his own mother. And sad. Delores was a friendship that I was not looking for but one I clearly needed and it was snuffed out in the cruelest of ways. And the friendship I had with Naveen was heading the same way if I could not find out what was wrong with him. I had not felt more alone in that moment. I scream and I cry some more, the line of grief and anger blurred beyond all comprehension. I finally fall into a troubled sleep.
It is the final day of entries for the fellowship competition. I had hoped to get some work done today but I am requested at the Banner Box with Harper. I am clueless as to why she wanted me there. I have been suspecting for the last two months that she wishes we had our arrangement but I was not going to relent. She is my boss now. I head down to the bar downstairs and I bump into Casey. I invite her up and we watch some of the game whilst I endure some of the insipidness of the Banner representatives. I ask her why she has not entered the competition. She asks if I was hoping she would, for which I did not answer. Eventually she heads back to her friends. As much as my Id is hoping she does not enter, I hope she does. I can see already she will be an asset to the team. There is a delay in play when a pitcher collapses. I see a group of people head out and I can not help but notice it is Casey involved. The chopper comes and I head back to the hospital. I check on the patient that was lifted in first and I look at the chart and I am impressed with the diagnosis and I hope that Casey did it. I return to my office to research some more for Naveen. At 12.01 my door opens and it is Casey stating she wanted in. She realizes that we are stronger together and today helped her realize that. Even though it is after the deadline I add her name to the list. I am again conflicted but I wish her well.
Authors note: well that fot emotional. I was literally writing, hop on here read some fluff, write some more, check something else and write some more. The next few chapters follow canon and at the later chapters set in book 2 I will veer off into Tashland. Thank you all who have read this series this far

Comfort
(Ethan Ramsey x F!MC) in a Choices Open Heart One Shot
As requested by
@hopelessromantic1352 with the prompt "You can't keep doing this."
A/N Here you go my sweet friend. Thank you for sending these requests to me to help with inspiration. I know you specifically wanted this one with both Ethan and Chris, so I'm going back to book 1 for you so that Tobias won't steal her away
I was also inspired by the Dr. Who gifs below for this one. For those who don't know, Karen Gillian is my FC for Chris Valentine. Don't worry, I'm not making Matt Smith my FC for Ethan 😂 This interaction though reminded me of something Ethan and Chris would have done and it fit my idea for the above prompt.
Masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was too much. All of it was more than Chris could take. Tears blurred her vision as she finally had a chance to react to the mayhem she'd just finished being a part of.
Ripping off the surgical scrubs covered in Rafael's blood, she dashed blindly down the corridor. Her breaths hitched as sobs threatened to spill out. All she could think of was running away from the absolute hell of the subway accident. She needed to get as far as she could before losing her strained hold on her emotions.
Ignoring the alarm of the exhausted nurses and doctors, she ran past them without saying a word.
She stumbled out of one of the side doors of the hospital and barreled into a familiar solid form.
Ethan grunted on impact. He grasped her arms once he recognized her.
"Chris?" He leaned down closer to see her more clearly in the darkness. "What happened?"
Tears began to spill down her cheeks. Of all the people in the world she could possibly bump into at this moment, it would be him.
"I have to go." She choked out, wrenching herself from his grasp.
He grabbed her once more to stop her escape.
"Are you all right?" He demanded in a harsh voice while giving her a slight shake.
There were few things in this world he could not tolerate and seeing Chris in this emotional state topped that list.
"No!" She cried out, her voice echoing across the parking lot.
In a jumble or words and sobs, she managed to tell him about the rush of patients they had in the emergency room.
Once her ability to speak became impossible, he gripped her hand and took her back into the hospital.
"No. I don't want to go back inside!" she struggled against his hold.
She stilled as he led her up the emergency stairwell towards the roof.
He chose a spot overlooking Boston and sat down.
Ethan glanced up and saw she was immobile once again with tears falling in steady streams down her cheeks. Taking her hand, he tugged her down.
She collapsed beside him and buried her head against her knees, her body wracked with silent cries.
He'd seen her like this before. When Delores died, she'd been unable to stop her tears. He'd found her alone in the locker room, silently crying at the unfairness of it all.
Setting his hand on her shoulder, he gently pulled her closer to his side.
"You can't keep doing this, Chris." He told her. "If you keep taking death to heart like this, then being a doctor will destroy you."
She wiped her eyes, and settled her chin on her knees.
"I know that." She said in a voice cracking with emotion. "But it was so much, Ethan. Everywhere I turned there was someone in the midst of dying or who was screaming in pain. I wanted to fix it all but I couldn't."
"Did you help them?" He asked.
"If you can call it that." She said bitterly. "I assessed, tagged, and moved on like Zaid told me to."
He squeezed her in a side hug. "I never doubted for a moment that you did the right thing."
His comforting touch and praise tore at her heart.
"Don't." She pleaded. "Don't be nice to me right now."
Chris could feel the tears rising once more. After all they felt for one another, his quitting, and now showing up when she needed him most; she thought she would truly break if he was kind to her.
She rested her head on his shoulder, nuzzling close to him once his arm dropped. "Please sit here with me, but don't be nice."
Ethan leaned his head against hers and snorted. "Everyone complains when I'm not nice and yet here you are demanding the opposite."
Chris bit back a tearful smile. "I think this is one request of mine you're willing to give in."
"I think we both know I always give in to what you want."
"If that were true, you wouldn't have left Edenbrook." She mumbled. "And you wouldn't have left me."
He cursed. "Chris, you know why I left Edenbrook. And as for you..."
He trailed off.
She looked up at him.
"As for me?"
He met her red rimmed eyes and felt his will falter. He'd once had such plans to protect and guide her career forward. He was going to not only show her how to be a doctor but watch as she became a great one. He'd ended up doing nothing but letting her down in the end. He'd failed to keep his unexpected feelings for her in check and he'd failed her as a mentor.
Seeing the quiet anguish he was under, she nestled her head back on his shoulder, leaving the issue alone for once.
He swallowed the words that were demanding to come out. He wanted to tell her he'd never leave her. He would always want her.
He loved her.
I'm not worthy to tell her anything like that, he thought to himself. Not now, possibly not ever.
"What are you doing here?" She asked after a long stretch of silence.
"Marlene left me a message saying that the hospital needed all the help they could get." He answered, grateful she wasn't pushing him into revealing more of what he wasn't ready for.
"What took you so long?" She playfully nudged him with her elbow.
A hint of smile appeared on her face when she heard his exasperated groan.
"I was out of town, Rookie." He grumbled.
"Having a good time?" She asked.
"I wouldn't say that." He muttered. "I went to see my dad and then I went on to--"
He bit his tongue. He couldn't get her hopes up that his visits to Mrs. Martinez's family would come to any good.
"To where?" She asked.
"Nowhere in particular." He lied. "I needed to drive and clear my head."
"I think I need a vacation like that." She mumbled. "I wish I could forget and leave everything behind for a while."
He wrapped his arm around her once more. "It's a pipe dream. There's no way you can fully leave everything behind, no matter how badly you want to."
"How badly did you want to?"
"More than anything."
She slipped her arms around his waist and hugged him.
He held her, taking every bit of comfort she was willing to give him. It's ironic, he thought. He'd brought her up here to comfort her. He had no intentions of letting her know his own struggles.
Ethan should have known that out of everyone he knew, Chris would know what he was feeling. Not only that, she would also give him exactly what he needed from her in this moment.
Neither was sure how long they sat there, holding one another. The soothing hum of the city below them and the stars above were all they needed as they sat together in companionable silence.
When the first blush of dawn began to light the sky, Ethan whispered that he'd take her home.
He got up first and offered his hand to Chris.
She lifted her tear stained face up to smile softly at him.
Taking his hand, she stood up and was pulled into his embrace. He pressed a tender kiss to her forehead when she slipped her arms around him again.
"You're going to be okay." He said, lips brushing hers with each word.
She nodded, her eyes meeting his after one last sweet kiss.
"We both will." She vowed.
Together, hand in hand, they went off to face another day.

Re8 Au person here and oh my goodness Delores, Felix and Julieta look amazing I love your art style so much! I hated finals in school hang in there and try not to get too stressed out!
Yeah Miranda has way too much time on her hands and she spends all of that time obsessing over random things that she thinks are important honestly she's pretty crazy 🤣
The Guzmáns are there! They're one of the few families that had every member taken most families only had one or two people taken. Miranda just kind of went through the village and picked random people from random families but she picked them purposely because she knew how close they were to the family.
Also I was thinking Mirabel in this AU is an adult when Ethan gets there and was an adult before he got there having stopped aging in her 20s what if she had her own child/children (triplets run in the family) that Miranda forced her to have? Or maybe not forced her to have but that she just had in general because I can't not see Mirabel as a mother when she gets fully grown. She's the type of person that has a vibe about them that you know that when they get older they're going to have kids. I don't know it was just a thought and I would love to have your feedback on it
As always any and all artwork would be appreciated!
YAYYYYAYAYAYY I'm so glad you liked the art, gonna do more of the others as soon as I get some more design ideas (pintrest is my best friend rn fr)
And. So cool. At least she took the whole family, most sane thing Miranda did (but honestly it doesn't make a difference. Let's be real 😭😭) Dolores can have her man ig <\\\\33
AS FOR KIDS ERM...idk maybe??? She met a nice guy, beats me tbh. Or maybe it's similar to Lady D, but. Not as weird?? I'm not sure about the whole making them from literal bugs or whatever, but adoption/saving them from Moranda's wrath or she just met a guy at some point would be rad 🤓🤓🤓
Also question. That I don't know if you answered before but?? Do the other family members age or do they stop as well? I mean they are infected with mold, just not as badly as Mirabel or the others ig. So maybe they do age, just a lot slower. I mean the other lords have been infected for years and barely aged, same with Alcina's daughters having stopped in about their mid 20s. So would the Madrigals be affected in the same way?? Just a question <\\33

Irresistible Force Paradox: Chapter Five - An Open Heart fic
Chapter One
Chapter Two
Chapter Three
Chapter Four
After a tragedy, Rory and Ethan call a temporary ceasefire.
Tumblr media
I sprint into the waiting room at Edenbrook, frantically looking around for anyone who may have answers about Delores.  I spot Ramsey sitting alone, staring down at his hands, and I rush over to him.
“Dr. Ramsey?  What happened? Where’s Delores?” I pant, bending in half and sucking in air, my hands on my knees.
He doesn’t answer me for several long moments, making me fidget impatiently.  I’m opening my mouth to repeat myself when he finally meets my eyes.
“Delores had a seizure,” he says hollowly, his eyes distant and unfocused.  “Full eclampsia.  We had no choice but to deliver the baby.  It’s 50/50 he’ll survive the night.”
“No…” I breathe out.  My knees buckles but I mange to catch myself on the arm of the chair Ramsey is sitting in.  “Where’s Delores?”
“She died.”
My blood roars in my ears, drowning out all of the other mundane hospital sounds surrounding us.  My eyes burn as small tendrils of grief take root in my chest, quickly stamped out by the heavier, more intense feeling of anger.  Anger at the randomness, the unfairness of it all.  Anger at myself for not having done more, not fighting Ramsey harder, not making Delores understand just how serious her condition was.
NO.
“Dr. Ramsey, - ”
“I’m fine.”  He stands and quickly strides away without looking back.
A while later I tiptoe into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, clutching that stupid stuffed frog, and silently begin searching the incubators for Delores’s son.  I allow myself a tiny smile when I finally find him and read his name tag.
Ethan Hudson.  How about that…
“Can I help you?”
I whirl around in surprise to face the attending on duty.  “His mother was my patient.  She got to name him?” I ask, vaguely gesturing towards the incubator.
“She told me just as she was rushed to the O.R.  The poor thing.  We’ll know more in the morning,” she answers, casting a sad look towards the baby.
“Do you mind if I sit with him tonight?”
“Feel free.”
“Do you mind if he has this?”  I hold up the frog.  “His mother wanted him to have it.  It’s been sterilized.”
“Go ahead,” she says, shrugging as she walks away.
I pull on a pair of sterile gloves and place the stuffed animal into the incubator, tucking it close to the baby.  He snuggles weakly against it, and tears prick my eyes.  “That’s it, tadpole.  That’s the way.”
I sit down on the couch next to the incubator and put my hand back inside, allowing the baby to grasp one of my gloves fingers.  I relax into the couch, preparing for a long, sleepless night.
********************************************** Ethan rounds the corner to enter the N.I.C.U. and draws up short as the sound of a now irritatingly familiar voice floats out to meet him.
“Can you believe some people actually think Black Jack Randall is attractive?  Like the book version, not the actor in the series?”
Ethan peers around on the doorjamb to see O’Shea seated next to the incubator housing Delores’s son, having a very enthusiastic one-side conversation with the infant.
“I know!  After everything he did to Jamie… I can’t believe it either.  How do you feel about Lord John as a character?”  Rory pauses as if listening to the baby’s reply.  “Well obviously… clearly you’re a gentleman of taste.  Can I talk about my gripe with Roger for a second?  Because honestly - ”
“Ahem.”  Ethan clears his throat and Rory glances over at him, eyes wide and cheeks pink with embarrassment.  “What are you still doing here?”
“I’m staying here tonight.”  O’Shea turns his attention back to the incubator.  “I hate the idea of him fighting for his life alone.”
“There are plenty of doctors working overnight.  If something happens, they’ll be here.”
“I know.”
The whisper is so soft Ethan can barely hear it.  “Would you mind if I joined you?”
O’Shea’s wide green eyes betray his surprise and it takes him a moment to answer.  “Not at all,” he finally says, shaking his head and scooting over to make room on the couch.
***************************************************
Ethan settles down on the couch next to me and for a while the soft, rhythmic whoosh of the ventilator is the only sound in the room.  He catches sight of the stuffed frog and breaks out into a rare smile.
“You gave him the frog.  Delores would have been…”  His face falls and his falls silent at the reminder of the loss of his friend.  “She would have been pleased.”
I bite the inside of my cheek and blink quickly in an effort to hold off the tears that have been threatening to fall all night.
“The first patient I lost… I was in my fourth week,” Ethan says, his voice more gentle than I thought him capable of.  “I didn’t make any mistakes.  He had stage four metastatic melanoma.  He just… fought like hell and lost.  I liked him.  He wasn’t much older than I am now.  I knew he didn’t have long to live, but it still hit me hard.”
I take a shallow, shuddering breath.  “I can’t let this get to me,” I mumble.
“Grieving a lost patient isn’t a weakness.  Good doctors should value life.  For itself.  I’d be more concerned if you weren’t upset.  Just know this wasn’t your fault.  Or mine.  Or Delores’s.  We all made the best decisions we could with the information we had.”
The argument that we could have done things differently is at the tip of my tongue, but I bite it back.  “I could have done more,” I say bitterly.  “I failed her.”
Ethan sighs.  “It’s important to push yourself, Rookie, but you will take a lot of losses.  We all do.  What matters is that you come back stronger.”
I glance at him suspiciously from the corner of my eye.  “Why are you being so nice to me?  Usually you’re…”
“Demanding?” he helpfully supplies.
“An asshole,” I mumble.
Other than a slight raise of his eyebrows Ethan doesn’t comment on my assessment of his character.  He stares off into space, sorting his thoughts.  “There are doctors with unlimited patience,” he says eventually.  “I am not one of them.  Energy I could use socializing, or making someone’s day better, I put towards my patience.  They’re who I’m here for.”
“Well that explains why you and Dr. Emery broke up,” I mutter under my breath.
“Rookie…”  Ethan’s tone is warning.
“You’re a teacher too,” I point out, attempting to backtrack.
“One of many, and you shouldn’t model yourself after any of us.  Idolatry among physicians is absurd.  We’re here to teach you practical medicine.  You need to find your own way of being a doctor.”
“And… how do I do that?” I ask, twisting on the couch to fully face him, ready to absorb whatever Yoda-like knowledge he’s preparing to hand down.
The corner’s of Ethan’s lips tip up into a gentle smile.  “You already are.”
What the fuck does that mean?
The baby stretches and wiggles, and Ethan scoots closer to the incubator, offering him a gloved finger.  A soft, absent looks washes over Ethan’s face as the baby tightly clutches his finger.
“She named him after you,” I murmur.
His eyes widen in surprise as he looks down at the nametag.  His jaw tightens and his throat works as he swallows.  “I… see she did.”
“Did you know Delores a long time?” I venture.
“Over ten years.  When I first emailed her I only meant to check in.  But she was recently divorced, feeling alone, so she insisted on coffee.  And then it turned into more emails and meeting once every couple months for Sunday roast.
“She sounds like a good friend.”
“I didn’t make friends easily when I started here, so I was always grateful to her for that.”  Ethan swallows hard and falls silent, gazing intently at Delores’s baby.  His eyes are red.
Unconsciously I reach out and place my hand over his.  “I’m so sorry this happened,” I whisper, my voice cracking slightly.
Ethan glances up at me, surprise at first, and then something I can’t decipher in his shining blue eyes.  He holds my gaze, his hand broad and warm beneath my own.
“Me too.”  He roughly clears his throat.  “I think we need coffee.”
“I can get some,” I offer, not having the heart to tell him I don’t like coffee.
“No.  I’ll go.”
Several minutes tick by as I watch baby Ethan sleep, counting each shallow rise and fall of his chest.  I start to drift off, the ambient hospital sounds soothing me.
“Here you go, Rookie.”
I shake my head, trying to clear away the cobwebs, and gingerly take the steaming mug Ethan’s hand me.  I wrinkle my nose as the bitter smell of coffee assaults my senses and steel myself to take a sip.  I fight the urge to gag, rather valiantly I think, and force down the drink.
Ethan attempts to hide a smirk behind his mug.  “You could have said you weren’t a fan of coffee, Rookie.”
Apparently I’m not as subtle as I thought.
I sheepishly set the mug on the small table next to the couch.  “Sorry.  I do appreciate the thought though.”
************************************************
Ethan gazes down at the sleeping O’Shea, who’s currently curled up against Ethan’s side.  The two had talked long into the night, seamlessly bouncing from subject to subject.  Ethan had found himself truly enjoying the conversation; Rory had proven to be well-versed in many subjects, and his quick, caustic sense of humor had Ethan laughing more than he had in months.  Several strands of inky dark hair have fallen over Rory’s face, and his glasses are slightly askew.  Ethan’s lips quirk up at the endearing sight, his breath catching as Rory’s nuzzles against his arm.
“Rookie,” he murmurs, gently brushing the loose hair back away from Rory’s face.  “Come on Rookie, time to wake up.”
Rory sits up slowly, yawning and stretching his arms over his head.  He adjusts his glasses and turns to the incubator.  Baby Ethan rests soundly, still snuggled against the stuffed frog.
“He made it!”  Rory flashes Ethan a beaming smile, unable to contain his joy.
“And he’s getting stronger.”
Rory takes out his hair tie, shaking the unruly strands loose, unable to stop smiling.  He runs a hand through his now unbound hair and checks his phone, his smile falling a little as he notes the time.
“Damn,” he sighs.  I have rounds in twenty minutes.  I need to go shower.”
Ethan sucks in a shallow breath, fighting to think about anything other than a naked, soapy Rory, hands trailing over lithe muscles…  “I’ll stay a little longer,” he quickly offers.
Rory stands, smiling at the baby one last time.  “Catch you later, tadpole.”
“Rory,” Ethan calls out as the other man is halfway out the door.
Rory skids to a halt and looks back over his shoulder.  “Hm?”
“Thank you.”

Random bonus question because I know this couldn’t be possible with your MC but: What if, instead of Aurora, she was Harper’s niece? (they never met before) Would that be a completely “hell no” from the beginning, feelings be damn?
The POWER of this idea. I've taken so long to answer this ask because, frankly, I'm obsessed with this idea, and I think Open Heart missed a huge opportunity here (almost as big as not making Aurora a love interest). Seriously, I would love to see an AU like this.
If MC was Harper's niece, it would make things all the more forbidden, but despite his self-hatred, it wouldn't stop Ethan.
When Ethan heard Harper's niece was coming to work at Edenbrook, he had big plans for her. He knew she was intelligent -- he'd been the one to fight for her admission, despite the conflict of interest. He wanted to be Charlie's mentor. He and Harper were still fighting, but he saw her as family. Charlie could be like his niece, too, and the idea of a family was appealing to Ethan. Of course, he fully intended to make her life hell. He knew she needed to earn respect at Edenbrook through her sweat and tears, not her aunt's name.
Then he met Charlie in the waiting room -- and part of him fell in love right there.
When he found out she was Harper's niece, he knew he was headed for trouble. So, instead of being her kind mentor, he was hard on her. Subconsciously, he thought that, if Charlie hated him, there would be no risk of becoming more. But Charlie rose to every occasion. She challenged his unreasonableness and had the audacity to be right when he was wrong. And damn it, she was wonderful. She was fiery and intelligent and kind and warm, and the night they lost Delores, Ethan was irrevocably tied to Charlie.
He knew better.
She was the niece of his ex! Was he crazy?!
He hated himself every time they crossed a line, but he crossed it anyway. He didn't know how to stay away.
They kept it a secret, but when Harper found out, she nearly burned the hospital to the ground. She threatened to report Ethan to the board, and Ethan wrote up a resignation letter before Charlie screamed at them both to calm down.
A few years later, when Charlie and Ethan got married, Harper gave a speech where she said that she hated Ethan for falling for her niece but she counted herself lucky that her niece was so loved.

If Ethan would’ve kept her relationship/deal with Harper in book 1, and then he meets MC, do you think he would have called things off with Harper when he realized he was developing feelings (?) or whatever for MC or would he have kept the deal just to forced himself to not cross any lines? Do you think knowing they’re together (by gossip because I don’t see them showing it at EB) would’ve impacted when and if MC started to have feelings for him?
I think he would have called it off with Harper. It was bound to happen eventually anyway, but MC was the catalyst. Plus if he was developing feelings (even though he wouldn’t want to admit to them) he could never use someone else as a distraction/cover up because that would only end up hurting both Harper and MC.
I think MC would feel a little stung knowing they’re together because it doesn’t take long for her to realise that she has feelings for Ethan. It’s as early as chapter 4 when they treat Delores in my hc. But Harper or not, you can’t fight feelings. She would still fall for him anyway, and she did.
It was put across that Ethan and Harper had unfinished business at the start of bk 1 and MC couldn’t resist eavesdropping due to what she initially thought was curiosity but now she knows it was because she had feelings for Ethan and wanted to know where she stood.
Thanks for the ask 💕

This was beautiful Alice.
Lily was so sweet and cute apologising to young Ethan. It would be a shock to him but I am glad that more abs more will be revelEd in time, some of what Delores went through would be hard to make age appropriate for really young kids.

Pairings: Ethan Ramsey x Victoria Clarke
Word Count: 1.5k
Summary: Luke and Lily get to know Ethan Hudson
Rating: Teen

Ethan was grateful for the large trolley as he lifted the Ramsey’s suitcases onto it. He had always managed to travel light whenever he went away but now he had a wife and two kids, it was like they packed for the entire world.
Ethan and Victoria were sharing a suitcase although Victoria’s had packed more for her whereas Ethan was able to keep his belongings to a respectable size.
“How far away do they live Daddy?” Luke asked as they made their way to the rental car.
“About half an hour. Are you excited to see Ethan?” Ethan smiled as he lifted Luke into the car and put his seatbelt on.
“Yeah! But I don’t really remember him.” Luke replied.
“You won’t unfortunately. But hopefully you’ll remember this visit more. Ethan is very excited to see you.” Victoria smiled climbing into the car.
“How does Daddy know him?” Lily asked.
“Daddy was friends with Ethan’s Mom. She used to live in Boston.” Victoria said.
“So does she live out here now?” Lily asked.
Victoria and Ethan shared a look. They were definitely too young to know the full truth.
“It’s a little bit more complicated than that. One day you will learn about it.” Ethan said.
“Why is Ethan named after you Daddy?” Luke asked.
“Ethan’s Mom decided on that.” Victoria replied.
“She sounds like a good friend.” Lily smiled.
“Yeah.” Ethan smiled sadly although the twins didn’t really notice.
The car pulled out of the airport car park and onto the main road.
“Are you excited to be back?” Victoria turned to Ethan.
“Yeah. It was a shame we couldn’t see him last year so we have some making up to do.” Ethan said.
“I still can’t believe the twins came down with a cold. We had such bad luck that week. What are your plans with him?”
“Alma tells me he wants to go see a movie so I thought I’d do that with him tomorrow.”
“That sounds good. Luke and Lily are excited to get to know him more.”
“I remember how fascinated he was with them as babies. Dolores would be so proud of him.”
Victoria took his hand and squeezed it affectionately. “She would. He’s happy and enjoying life. That’s all she could ever want for him. And you’re a part of making sure he’s growing up knowing who his Mom was.”
“You’re right.” Ethan smiled.
“Look Lily! That cloud looks like a giraffe!” Luke pointed out the window.
“Mommy told me that Daddy is a giraffe because he’s so tall!” Lily giggled.
“I can hear you, you know.” Ethan said.
“Oops.” Lily covered her mouth giggling.
“They’ve been listening to you too much.” Ethan pretended to glare at Victoria.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Victoria laughed.
They arrived at Alma’s house in no time, pulling onto the drive and stopping the car. The front door opened and little Ethan came running out, a big grin on his face.
“Uncle Ethan!” Little Ethan grinned as he ran towards Ethan’s outstretched arms.
“Hello little man! You’ve gotten so big since I last saw you!” Ethan smiled as he hugged his little namesake. “How have you been?”
“Good! School is out for the summer and the weather is great! I’m so happy you’re here!” Little Ethan smiled.
“Me too buddy. Guess who else is here?”
“Auntie Vicky!” Little Ethan smiled giving Victoria a hug.
“Hello Ethan! It’s so good to see you!” Victoria smiled. She gestured to Luke and Lily who were stood behind her legs, shy smiles on her face. “You remember Luke and Lily? They’re a bit shy.”
“Hi Luke. Hi Lily.” Little Ethan smiled. He held out a hand and they high fived him giggling.
“Hi Ethan.” Luke smiled.
“You’re really tall!” Lily said.
“My Aunt Alma says I get it from my Mom. I have loads of cool toys in the living room! Do you want to play with them?” Little Ethan asked.
Luke and Lily looked up at Victoria and Ethan who nodded and they grinned as they ran into the house following little Ethan into the living room.
“He’s been waiting all day for someone to share those toys with.” Alma laughed as she stepped out onto the driveway.
“Luke and Lily couldn’t wait to come here. How are things Alma?” Ethan replied giving her a hug.
“They’re good. Daniela and her family will be coming over later too. The kids can’t wait to meet Luke and Lily.” Alma smiled.
“That sounds great. Luke and Lily have been looking forward to this trip.” Victoria said.
“So have we. Although I do have one thing to share.” Alma said as they entered the house and she lowered her voice. “Daniela and I decided to tell Ethan about Dolores. He noticed the pictures of her around the house and kept asking who she was. We felt that now was the right time.”
Ethan’s eyes widened as he looked at Victoria. “How did he react?”
“He was confused, naturally. He always thought I was his Mom and I can’t blame him for that. He never really understood what we meant when we said ‘your Mom would be so proud of you.’ But since telling him he wants to know all about her. We haven’t told her how she died. If it’s not too much trouble, I thought if he started asking you questions, you might be able to provide some answers? He knows that you know her.”
Ethan looked at Victoria unsure. She nodded her head, giving him a small smile and a gentle squeeze of the hand.
“Of course. And he couldn’t have asked a better person.” Ethan smiled.
Alma smiled back. “Thank you. It means a lot.”
They walked into the living room and sat down on the sofas. Alma went into the kitchen to make a drink.
“Ethan has a lot of cool toys Mommy!” Luke said looking at Victoria.
“He does.” Victoria laughed.
“And books too! My Mom bought some for when I was older.” Little Ethan grabbed one off the shelf.
“Your Mom seems really nice.” Lily said.
Little Ethan looked up in shock, his eyes wide. “She’s not my Mom! My Mom’s dead!” He dropped the book, stood up and ran out of the room.
Ethan headed after him whilst Victoria moved to sat on the floor.
“Did I upset him?” Lily asked, tears threatening to spill from her eyes.
Victoria pulled Lily into a tight hug, pressing kisses to the top of her head. “Little Ethan learnt something about his Mom recently that he didn’t know before. It’s not your fault Lil.”
“What happened to his Mom?” Luke asked.
Victoria wrapped an arm around Luke and pulled him closer. “She went to heaven. And little Ethan has been looked after by Alma, his aunt.”
“Is that why he ran off?” Lily asked.
“It’s still new to him so he’s trying to take it all in.” Victoria replied.
In the kitchen, Alma was comforting little Ethan as he ran into her arms.
“Lily doesn’t know anything Ethan. Neither does Luke, they’re too young.” Alma said.
“Like I was?” Little Ethan looked up at Alma.
“Exactly.” Big Ethan smiled as he walked into the kitchen and laid a gentle hand on little Ethan’s shoulder.
“What was my Mom like?” Little Ethan asked sitting at the kitchen table.
“Your Mom was a lovely person. She always knew how to make people laugh. I met her at the hospital. She was my first patient as an intern.” Ethan smiled.
“Really?”
“Yes. And I know she is watching over you with a big smile on her face. She would adore you to pieces.”
“I can show you some home videos of your Mom Ethan if you’d like that?” Alma suggested taking a seat opposite little Ethan.
Little Ethan nodded. “Yes please. I just wish she was really here.”
“I promise that we’ll make sure you know all about her. You can ask any time. Myself, your aunt, even Ethan. We’ll do our best to answer all the questions you have.” Alma said.
“And you know you can talk to me or Auntie Vicky anytime.” Ethan smiled.
“That’s right.” Victoria smiled as she walked into the kitchen with Luke and Lily.
“I didn’t know about your Mom Ethan. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you sad.” Lily said in a quiet voice, holding onto Victoria’s hand.
“It’s okay. I’m sorry too. I didn’t mean to scare you.” Little Ethan smiled. He stood up and held his arms out, Lily walked over and hugged him.
“Can I get a hug too? I didn’t do anything wrong!” Luke said trying to wade his way in.
“Luke…” Victoria said in a stern voice.
“Of course.” Little Ethan laughed and wrapped an arm around Luke.
“Well I’m glad that’s sorted.” Alma laughed.
“Indeed. I hope you know those todays aren’t going to play with themselves.” Ethan said out loud.
The kids broke apart and ran back into the living room laughing.
“I’m glad he knows the truth. It was best for him.” Alma smiled.
“And he’ll learn much more as he gets older.” Ethan replied.
“Exactly. We’ll all make sure of that.” Victoria said.
Little Ethan would learn just how important his Mom was to everyone. And they would make sure her memory lived on.

Summary: Ethan starts at Edenbrook, with the emotional scars from Hopkins still fresh. This chapter will span residency and look at the beginnings of three relationships that Ethan finds himself in
Disclaimer: Characters belong to Pixelberry
🩺🩺🩺🩺🩺🩺🩺🩺🩺🩺🩺
Ethan was stoic but excited. He graduated top of his class and got accepted into his first pick for residency at Edenbrook. The final summer dragged ceaselessly but finally he was in Boston ready to embark on his career.
There were new interns from all over, he was the only medical resident that was accepted from Hopkins. Ethan was not there to make friends though. The betrayal by Tobias still stung and he was not eager to relive that. He knew these people would be his colleagues, however outside of work he was not going to get involved.
His first patient was a female, she was not much older than he. He had diagnosed her with appendicitis. He was waiting to get her temperature down before she went into surgery and that appeared to be working. Rounds came. Ethan already disliked this doctor that he had been saddled up to. Now they were at his patient and this doctor had the nerve to disagree with his diagnosis. The patient was becoming distressed and cried out in pain. Then Dr Banerji came in to find out what was happening. Dr Banerji did a physical exam and agreed with Ethan’s diagnosis. The patient was then taken to surgery. Ethan was asked to see Dr Banerji later in the shift. Ethan became nervous. He knew he was being insubordinate but for the patient to be disregarded like that, he was angry. She was now in recovery thankfully and was going to see her after his meeting with Dr Banerji.
Ethan knocked on the door and was surprised to be greeted warmly.
“Firstly, good job on standing up for your patient, I see too many interns second guess themselves when an attending comes up with something different but Ms Hudson got the care she needed all because you stood up and stood firm.”
Ethan did not know what to say as Thank you that did leave his mouth seemed inadequate. Dr Banerji continued,
“ I read your application, it showed me a young doctor with great potential and who genuinely cares about the patients. I do like it when what I read in an application matches up to reality.”
Ethan was stunned.
“So does this mean I am not kicked off the program?”questioned Ethan.
Naveen smiled warmly.
“On the contrary my dear boy, the medical profession needs more people like you. Keep doing what you are doing and you will be fine.” Ethan breathed a sigh of relief. He then went back to the hospital. He stopped by his patients room to see how she was.
“Hello Ms Hudson, how are you after surgery?”
“Please, call me Delores. I am fine. And I am glad you stopped by.”
“You are?”
“Yes, thank you for standing up for me with that other doctor, truly, I shudder to think what would have happened to me if you had not.”
“Well I am glad too that you came through that ordeal, no one deserves to be dismissed like that.”
They chat some more and they exchange email addresses.
A few days later Ethan is catching a break in one of the on call rooms. Delores had gone home a few days prior and he thought that he would send her an email. He was in 2 minds about it. One on hand it seemed rude but he was not looking for any type of relationship and he was sure that reaching out would open a door he was adamant he did not want opened. He sent her an email asking how her recovery is going. Later that day he received the following;
To Ethan,
Thank you for checking in. I am recovering well. I would like to meet up. There is a coffee shop near the hospital called Derry Roasters. From what you told me I think you will like the coffee there.
Regards
Delores Hudson
Ethan was torn but the coffee recommendation swayed him. They met the following Sunday. Delores arrived first and ordered a Vienna for them both. Ethan arrived, surprised that Delores had ordered for them. He was bemused with his order.
“It is called a Vienna,” she explained. “I have not come across anywhere that makes Vienna like they do here. It is creamy but how they layer it means you get more coffee.”
Ethan sipped it slowly, he had been drinking espresso for years so milk or cream to him was an abomination but he found himself genuinely enjoying it. They got to know each other. Delores is a legal secretary who recently divorced and moved from Illinois to New Bedford but got a position in Boston after the divorce. Ethan did not go into great detail about his life but Delores could sense he was holding something back. They then proceeded to walk through Boston Common.
“I have enjoyed today, Delores, I am glad I decided to come.”
“Me too, Ethan. We all need friends when we are starting fresh in a new city.”
Ethan winced at that but agreed. Making friends was something that he had not seen himself doing, especially with how spectacularly the last and closest friendship he had ended. Despite the nagging feeling that something would go wrong he wanted to believe that it could work. They agreed to meet again in a few weeks for brunch.
A few weeks later he met Delores for brunch and enjoyed it. Ethan even admitting to Delores that he was enjoying the friendship that was developing between them. Delores was glad. She too was looking for friends having recently moved and it felt good to have made one outside of her office.
Professionally Ethan was flourishing under the mentorship of Naveen. He was still not overly friendly with the medical interns, this did not perturb Ethan in any way. He did surprise himself by becoming friendly with one of the top surgical interns. Her name, Harper Emery. They started off as being friendly, then they became friends. Ethan found her very attractive, not just physically but the scars from Estelle had him gun shy about wanting to pursue anything more. Harper, too found Ethan attractive and wondered if she could handle a romantic relationship.
One evening , on one of their dinner dates at a local restaurant, Harper decided to bite the bullet and state that she had feelings of more than friendship. Ethan said he had similar feelings. It was when he told her about Estelle, Tobias and the betrayal. Harper was shocked but understood his reluctance. Harper stated she had not had a good history either. They decided to give it ago but decided to take things slowly.
The budding romance did not detract from their work in any way in fact it helped them both become better at their jobs, especially when understanding the differing perspectives that surgical and internal medicine provided. Naveen was also getting Ethan to think about a fellowship with diagnostics and rare infectious diseases. Naveen could tell that Ethan was very good at figuring out what was wrong with the patients and he wanted him on a specialist team that offered an avenue of hope for those who had nowhere else to go. Ethan was intrigued by this and this was the change he wished would happen elsewhere within the health system.
Intern year ended and then started the second year of residency. Ethan enjoyed the more challenging cases that he was allocated, much to the annoyance of the other residents, even some attendings. Ethan took some time to reflect on the relationship he had with Naveen, how it was very different from the relationship he had with his dad. Naveen pushed him in ways that Alan never did and then he started to wonder if it was normal to resent how you had been parented. He knew his dad worked long hours out of sheer necessity but he did wonder how things would have been different. It was at this point that Ethan started having thoughts about diagnostics and the principles involved and when he told Naveen, he was encouraged to write a book and the formulae for Diagnostic Principles was born.
His friendship with Delores went from strength to strength also. They met up monthly, even having dinner at her house occasionally. Ethan also met her sister Alma. Alma liked Ethan a lot, to the point of not so subtly suggesting that Delores should consider dating Ethan. Both Ethan and Delores were mortified, given that Ethan was still with Harper but Delores stood strong. Ethan is a friend and that is what we both want. Over time Alma came to accept this.
Things were going good with Harper, so Ethan thought. They met for dinner and he could tell that Harper seemed nervous. He asked her what was the matter.
“Ethan, I think that I am on the road to being in love with you.”
Ethan was surprised but also breathed a sigh of relief. Harper continued,
“I am surprised that I got here.”
“I understand what you mean Harper. I have considered myself unworthy of love even well before the events of Estelle. I do like you a lot, do not get me wrong, however I know I am not where you are emotionally.”
Harper was saddened to here that.
“I appreciate your honesty Harper. I know what I just said hurt you.”
“No, Ethan, thank you for being honest. I know how hard it was for both of us to entertain the thought of entering into a romantic relationship.”
“True, but if we continue, it will be messy. I would very much like to still remain friends with you, if it is not too awkward.”
“I would like that too Ethan, when we started, I had hopes of still maintaining our friendship as it means alot to me.”
Ethan was shocked to hear that his friendship had meant something to Harper. He suspected it did but hearing it mid break up was disconcerting to say the least.
“I enjoy our friendship too.”
Both were glad that they were able to end the romantic relationship amicably but it took some time before they reached regular programming with their friendship which both were happy about.
Second year ended and Ethan was onto his final year of residency. Naveen suffered with grief when his sister died of Cancer. Ethan was gravely concerned. He knew Naveen and his sister were close but Naveen took the loss hard. So hard that he started a patient on a new treatment that conflicted badly with the NSAID’s that she was still on. A tracheotomy was performed but Naveen nicked the larynx. Despite the action being unethical, Ethan signed off on the treatment and procedure and ensured that the patient had access to speech therapy. This shook Naveen. It made him realize just how badly he was not coping. He gave up
Alcohol for a time and processed his grief in more healthier ways.
Outside of work, Ethan was studying hard and writing Diagnostic Principles. The completed and published and he passed his boards with top marks.
At his book launch, Ethan did feel supported, Harper was there, as well as Naveen, some old lecturers from Hopkins and other universities. But he could not help but feel a nagging emptiness. He ignored it for the party but when he was home his thoughts went to freshman year and the saccharine event he had to endure and the comment that was made by one Tobias Theodore Carrick. “Celebrating the victories alone will feel empty.”
Ethan was shocked that these words were still ringing true. Before he changed his mind he rang him. They decided to meet the following Sunday. They met at Derry Roasters. They exchanged pleasantries and discussed how Tobias was right all those years ago. Tobias commented that it seemed that being a loner seems to be working. Ethan stated he did have the support as well as the friendship of Naveen and Harper but there was someone missing. Then they came to the topic that they knew they could not avoid. Estelle and the events of that night. Despite allowing three people to varying degrees, Ethan could not help but feel he could not trust Tobias again. Tobias was hurt but he understood. He still felt horrible for the way things ended but if there was no trust and if neither were sure how to regain that trust then they could not continue. He was sad but in a way there was closure. He hoped they could be friends again one day but he knew that if it did happen there would be no forcing.
Residency ended, Ethan was looking forward to commencing his fellowship and taking up a position on Naveen’s diagnostics team. If he was asked at the beginning go residency if he would be where he was, his answer would have been professionally yes but the friendships with Harper, Delores and Naveen surprised him and he was deep down glad about that.
Authors note: Next chapter will be attending days leading upto just before book 1 so a less angsty chapter but we will get a glimpse of the relationship between Alan and Ethan and a check in if you will of Louise. Then I will do a chapter 13 of DTI. That will be heartbreaking as we will be in book 1 territory. Reminder this series is primarily from the perspective of Ethan so it will be from his perspective so the pain is real.

LUGAR: CENTRAL PARK EE.UU

Book: Open Heart
Warnings: Implied sex
Rating: Teen
Pairing: Ethan x F!MC
Word count: 1900+
Author’s Note: I’ve kind of written a sequel for this fic and you can find it here! Check out my masterlist while you’re here too!
He knew she was special from the moment he met her. He could see the determination in her eyes, the hope that there was still some good left in the world. She was the only slither of light left in his world, the star guiding him through the darkness.
He was hesitant. He thought that if he told her it would ruin their relationship, or whatever it was that they were, but most importantly it would risk their lives. He had a good career, nobody would bat an eye about him, but he knew that if they came out to the world there’d be whispers about her, and he couldn’t be the one who ruined her career.
But one day, he was watching her. He watched her give her all to save a patient's life and he thought to himself, “I can’t be the one to throw away the love of my life either.”
So he told her. Sure, he was a blubbering mess but he told her what he really felt, how much he cared for her, how much he loved her. That was all it took. Just like that, they were together. They were happy.
She doesn’t think about the times she looked at him and knew right then and there he was the love of her life
“Of course you’re great with kids too,” she rolled her eyes.
He let go of the now 3-year-old little Ethan Hudson’s hand. The two of them had taken their rare day off from work to spend some time with little Ethan, or as she liked to call him, Tad, short for tadpole, the nickname Delores used to call him.
“And that’s a problem?” He raised an eyebrow at her as little Ethan ran off towards the playground in the middle of the park.
“Yeah, now I can’t find anything you aren’t good at,” Ethan’s lips curled up into a small but visible smirk, “do you know exactly how frustrating that is?”
“Oh, I know all about it,” he wrapped his arms around her waist, “I have to deal with that every second I’m around you.”
She threw her head back and laughed, “that was very smooth.”
“I learned from the very best,” he replied as his smirk widened into a grin.
They sat down on a bench in peaceful silence as they watched little Ethan play on the playground with the other kids. He had gotten into some sort of argument with another toddler around his age. They’d been fighting over a sandcastle mould which was really one of them using it and the other snatching it up when no one was watching.
The sun was shining directly over them and it was starting to feel warmer by the second.
“We should take little Ethan to go get ice cream,” she said to him as they watched him wipe sweat off his forehead. She started to get up when he pulled her back down.
“I can’t let you tell him. He already likes you better than me and I refuse to end up just being ‘Ethan’s aunt’s boyfriend,’” he said with playful disgust lacing the last few words.
She teased, “can you really blame him?”
“No, I suppose I can’t,” he said as he stood up and took her hand, leading her to where little Ethan was, “you’re just too perfect like that, Rookie.”
She didn’t think of him anymore
If it weren’t for the cool air or the streams of morning light passing through the ever so slightly opened window, she would have thought of the situation as less of a fairytale dream and more of what it really was—a slow-moving nightmare that would haunt her endlessly
Her heart beat in sync with his breathing as she stared aimlessly at the wall to her side while he slept. Afraid that he’ll leave all too soon, she closed her eyes and slowed her breathing when she felt him stir in bed, meaning that he’d be waking up any second now.
She felt him peel his arm off her side as he sat up in bed, probably looking around at the mess they’d made last night. Her brain told her over and over again to open her eyes, do something, say something, anything to him, but she decided that maybe it was best if he just left right then and there. She didn’t want to put herself through any more pain than she had already been through and knew she’d undoubtedly face soon enough.
Light kisses were trailed down her neck as she felt his weight shift. Why did he do that? Why did he decide to remind her of their anger-fuelled relapse last night that ended with her in his arms, not wanting to be there but not willing to let go?
She felt warm drops of his tears fall onto the base of her neck as he left the last pepper of kisses. It was like he wanted to leave her with something to accompany the scars on her heart that he had caused.
She felt the weight being lifted off her as she felt him leave the bed. She tried to keep her eyes shut as she heard his feet shuffle across the hardwood floor of her bedroom.
But alas, her breaking point was when she heard his belt being picked up off the floor, along with his tie and the rest of his clothes that were strewn across the room, long forgotten in the haze that was the night before.
“Don’t leave me,” she croaked out just as he finished tying the laces of his shoes, “please, Ethan. I’m begging you,” she pleaded desperately.
He looked at her sadly, maybe contemplating whether he wanted to stay or not, if he could bring himself to ruin her, if he wanted to be remembered in her eyes as the man who crushed her heart without a sense of guilt.
He stepped closer to her, standing at the edge of the bed. She looked up at him expectantly but he simply shook his head lightly. Cupping her face with his hands, he leaned down, bringing his lips to meet hers as he kissed her with all the emotions he could muster.
He stepped away, giving her one final longing look, “I’m sorry,” he looked down to his feet, “you have no idea how sorry I am,” his hoarse voice made tears well up at the sides of her eyes, threatening to fall at any given moment.
She couldn’t pull her eyes off him as he walked away no matter how much she wanted to. As the sound of the front door closing echoed through the silent hallway of her apartment, she stared ahead emotionlessly. She looked to her empty bed, the open wound that would never quite heal fully, if at all.
She didn’t cry. She would have welcomed the tears with open arms right then but they just refused to fall, to roll down her face and stain the blankets that once wrapped around the man she thought she’d spend the rest of her life with.
At that point, anything would be better than the dreadful feeling of emptiness that was stuck at the back of her throat, clawing at her emotions that left when he did.
There was no longer even the slightest trace of Ethan in the entirety of her apartment, no memories of last night's events present except the one that replayed in her mind over and over again.
She doesn’t think about the words she wished could be taken back.
“We’ve all made mistakes, Rookie,” the enchanting nickname she used to love was being twisted against her, and she hated it.
“Don’t compare us, Ethan. I’m nothing like you,” she spat the words out as if they were venom.
“It takes two people to destroy a relationship,” his volume raised a few levels.
“Well, when things get hard I don’t run off to the Amazon for the second time!”
The words struck Ethan like a knife. How did she know he applied to go back? He laughed at himself internally, of course she knew. Everyone was in awe of her, someone would’ve let it slip eventually.
Everything finally made sense, the guilt that had been building up for weeks now finally reached a breaking point when he saw the hurt look on her face.
Any anger he previously had disappeared as she turned away from him, not wanting him to see just how broken she was, how broken he made her. Something in her wanted him to yell at her, to tell her that she was wrong. She knew the truth, but she wanted him to lie to her one last time. It could’ve been good, it would’ve been better.
The denial she wished so hard for never came.
“Will you ever forgive me?” He asked nervously.
She scoffed at his words, “Of course I want to forgive you, you have no idea how much I want to forgive you,” her voice softened, “but I’m scared that if I forgive you, you’ll come back and hurt me deeper than you already have,” she told the truth, then decided that she absolutely hated telling the truth.
He let out a defeated and shaky sigh, “so we’re over then,” he leaned against the counter. She didn’t know it, but if he hadn’t leaned against the counter, he wasn’t sure that he wouldn’t have collapsed.
“Yeah. Yeah, we are,” she tried to hide the tears that slipped down her cheeks but he noticed them, he always did. It broke him inside to know that he was the cause of her pain and her tears, and it hurt more to know that there wasn’t anything he could do about it.
“Then I suppose this is goodbye.”
She doesn’t love him, not anymore.
If she had a dollar every time she repeated that same stupid lie to herself, maybe she’d be able to move out of the apartment that, even after so many nights, still felt like him. Maybe she’d even have enough money to move out of the godforsaken city that reminded her of him at every turn,
Even with him being thousands of miles away from her, she still couldn’t escape him. Occasionally, she’d hear the interns admiring everything about Ethan Freaking Ramsey. Just like that, all the tape, glue, and bandages that she tried to patch her heart together with fell apart and she was left to dwell on all the good times they once had.
She told herself that she’d get better. That one day she wouldn’t fall apart at the mere mention of his name. Who knows, maybe one day when he gets back she’d actually be able to hold an entire conversation with him.
Ethan wasn’t a mess like she was, even though she hoped he would be. From what she’d heard, he seemed to be handling the break-up well. The knowledge that he was fine when she wasn’t was another stab in the heart.
Maybe it was all a ruse, she’d hoped that he was putting up a front and was keeping his true feelings at bay with them, just like he had done to her.
But maybe those same friends told him that she was doing fine as well. On all accounts, she looked like she was doing fine. It was only when she locked herself away in her Ethan-free apartment that she could really be honest with herself.
If tissues filled her room, who would know? She was the only one who had to face the unmade bedsheets and piles of unfolded laundry. If anyone asked, she kept her room spotless.
And if she really asked herself, she didn’t love him anymore, she had gotten over him and was ready to go on and venture into the next chapter of her life.
But even she knew those were all lies.

What was your MC’s reasoning to not hate Ethan at the beginning? Was she like “He’s an asshole but I really want to learn from him” or more of a “I know he must have a nice side”, or maybe she did hate him a little? Lol I just wat to know, based on your MC’s personality what allow her to become close to him.
Charlie hated Ethan. From the moment he insulted her on her first day, that was her sworn enemy. Was it unfortunate that he happened to be her idol? Yes, but she wasn't going to let that stop her from forming a rivalry. Going through residency, she needed an enemy to give her an outlet for her frustration.
But hating him wouldn't stop Charlie from learning from him. Asshole or not, he was the best in the field, and she could benefit from his instruction. So, she forced herself to tolerate him, if just for his impeccable knowledge. To her chagrin, his snide comments made her a better doctor. He was a jerk, but he knew what he was talking about.
Still, she could settle into her booth at the bar and complain about his incessant corrections and poor attitude. A few beers in, she could even whine that it was a waste that a man that handsome had to be such a horrible boss.
Things changed slowly. She appreciated his advice more, and he took a liking to her. Moments of vulnerability cut through their animosity. Losing Delores changed everything. That trauma bonded them together, and from then on, it lingered in the periphery of every heated exchange. They didn't acknowledge it, but they became friends. She was his star resident, and he was her valued mentor. That's why it cut so deep when he quit and disappeared in Book 1 -- thus prompting A Weekend with Dr. Ramsey.

cool, thats one of the ones ive been rotating in my mind the most lately, even before i started the poll!
not as much as the post-funeral & delores dying but bc ive been rotating those in my head more than any others, it means that Baxter and Ethan r fresh on the brain & hopefully i can characterize them properly. especially since i havent really written them much
if u voted for any of these and want to be tagged when i post either a specific one or any of them, just let me know
Wes & Ezra becoming a couple
takes place a few years after graduation. Ezra is well on track to becoming a famous musician & Wes is doing Dubiously Legal Wes Things. they run into each other in vegas & get married as an alibi for Wes. they slowly realize they actually do have feelings for each other
Dubiously Legal Wes Things being something that's illegal, but tbh shouldn't be. i haven't decided on what it is specifically, but Wes is the kind of guy to help people in tricky situations w the law. specifically shitty laws that hurt people more than they help/are just an excuse to get more people in prision
prime specifically -- tbh im ignoring choices hss w my hss fics. at least for the prime cast
Simon, Wes, & Ezra becoming a throuple
Payton hosts a post-college-grad meetup party for the prime squad. in a good-natured attempt to get Simon and Nishan back together (they dated briefly in high school, & it fell apart bc they were dumb, immature teens who couldnt communicate) she suggests a game of Truth Or Dare Or Drink. the plan backfires and instead of Si kissing Nish and getting back together w him, he kisses Ezra, then Wes bc he feels bad for kissing a married man and wants to even it out, and then ends up in a throuple w them
oph chap1 rewrite from Ethan's perspective, Baxter as mc
exactly what it says on the tin. ive been interested in writing this for a while bc Baxter is considerably more prickly than the canon mc, and would have the final word in Ethan berating them for "almost fucking up" w that patient right at the beginning
Baxter's emotional response to losing a patient for the first time
Baxter is really.... Not Great at regulating their emotions in a healthy way and tend to Repress Everything. losing Dolores is the first time since like childhood that they Properly Experience Emotions. so basically this one'll b a big ole emotional hurt/comfort
post book2 funeral scene w E/B
listen. Baxter and Ethan would Not fuck in a car right after a funeral. Baxter would invite him inside & they would cuddle and talk.
followup to the pregnancy fic i posted a few months ago
Thomas miscarried a week after it takes place (i dont think ill write that specific bit, depends on how i feel), but this fic takes place a few months after that. RCD MC (named Macy) and Matt announce their own pregnancy shortly after returning from their honeymoon. Thomas gets jealous, Avalon gets sad, and they talk about where they want to go next vis-a-vis The Whole Having Kids Thing. (whoops i think thats the title there lmao that was unintentional when i wrote that). transguy mpreg if it wasnt obvious
Avalon Birthday Fic (doubles as a valensday fic)
I Am Going To Be Real With You, I Don't Have A Plan For This One. but its almost Ava's bday/valensday so. eh. maybe ill figure something out
hi for the love of god hello finish the fcking 1st chapter of the rcd rewrite
i swear to GOD its almost done. i just wanna add another scene. for context.
