Hmmm just gonna spit this headcanon out in text post form since A. I don't think I could exposit it well enough in image form and B. It's not actually textually/thematically substantiated and I don't like actually staking my stuff on just vibes alone*

But anyway. I'd say it's pretty evident that all the islanders forgot their names, right? King obviously. Because why the hell else would he do that, but also Siffrin No Middle Names No Last Name.

They're 'pretty sure' they've 'always' been 'Just Siffrin' 'as long as they can remember'. It's a pretty cruel twist of the knife to say that they don't even get to keep their birth name as a memento, which is why I'm saying as such.

My utterly unsubstantiated claim is I think it'd be cute to say that Sisyphus *is* the name Siffrin initially picked, assuming the myth of King Sisyphus is recontextualised as idk, just a play or something in the setting. But I like the idea of Siffrin going 'oh shit 🫵 he's just like me fr' at a tortured fictional character long before the irony kicks in.

As for how Sisyphus -> Siffrin. I think that chronic mumbler and emotional doormat Sif just did not correct people who misheard the name during their time travelling, and went through enough places with incompatible phonologies (pronounceable sounds in the language) without ever really writing it down that it just got kinda. Changed until it was unrecognisable, and Siffrin just went with it until the earlier pronunciations slipped out of their swiss-cheese brain. And they just kinda don't remember any of that.

Also, something something the horrid realisation that Siffrin also named themselves after a King. Just not as blatantly.

*(though I think there's something here about Siffrin, a guy from a belief system that seems to thoroughly disincentivise autonomy and self-motivated choice continuously having their hand forced to make changes/choices they don't want but have no choice but to... It's not solid enough to really back this up tbh, but it informs it.)

Anyway.

#theres also something one of my french-speaker friends said about siffrin's official pronounciation being the feminine way to pronounce -in?#which i dont know enough about to really corroborate and theyre busyyyy and havent started the game yet so i cant really ask #im sure someone else has already voiced this easy-to-come-up-with headcanon anyway but just in case nobody has i decided to post it #isat #isat spoilers #in stars and time #isat siffrin #isat loop #i also personally picture sif (and loop especially) being more hostile to the concept of changing themselves after The Encounter #both of them being big grudge-holders and that 'want' to control your own destiny being clearly against how they interpret the universe #as for whether they should be so hostile? probably not! but they appear to be anxious in fear of some kind of divine retribution should #they like. ever even dare to Want. and uh. well. that certainly went well for Loop. not sure they'd be gung-ho to do it again #so Loop being able to go 'oh well it wasn't my REAL name' as a salve for having to make a new identity AGAIN....#while sif is explicitly clinging to it as an anchor for Who They Are If Nothing Else.. they can upset each other and also mirabelle i think #lucabytetalks

Frankly, if you like classic literature and/or fairy tales (and speak well enough French), then this book is a Must. It collects four stories written by Henriette-Julie de Castelnau de Murat, one of the 17th century noble ladies who were writing fairy tales in France. They used those stories to engage with their lived realities, for example, speaking up against arrange marriages was a recurring theme.

Anyway, one of them was a lesbian. That is Madame de Murat. The stories in this book are not explicitly queer, for the obvious reason of being written in the 17TH CENTURY, but the subtext is definitely there, plus you get a biography of the author.

It is a short book, interesting read, and I love it SO MUCH to see one of the conteuses get some recognition. It is beyond time that we start reprinting the stories of these women.

#like I see that the Internet Archive has her works #but Project Gutenberg only has some English translation and probably not all her stories either #I honestly wish that we'd had an option to buy a complete editition #but this is a VERY VERY GOOD START #especially because it saves people the trouble to comb through entire books worth of fairy tales looking for ones that can be read as queer #classic literature #french literature #fairy tales #books #queer books #Madame de Murat

#sas rogue heroes #sasrh:canonau #turns out augustin cannot for the life of him figure the irish lieutenant out #and he makes him oh so very curious #actually both irishmen kinda do #especially when they're together #but whereas paddy remains pretty set in letting augustin see just one side of him #(and maybe just a glimpse of something else when he lets his guard down with eoin and doesn't realise the french is looking)#eoin seems to do the opposite and it's like he enjoys showing he contains multitudes every single time both lieutenants have an interaction #and just when jordan thinks he's finally understood who's this young talented soldier #BAM something else pops up #he's not just paddy's number one defender #he's also pretty good at leading a drill and training??#he's joyful and kind to others (english and french - he makes no difference)#he's a talented pianist ?? certainly catching augustin's attention when he gives paddy lessons in the mess hall #(lessons which he tries not to stare at for they feel a bit private)#he's skilled not just with weapons and strategy but also with the pen ?? with words ??#if the letters he's seen him ghost write are anything to go by #but oh then he starts making off handed comments about poetry #about books #about books augustin is reading in those small moments of quiet in between the raids and the battles #and he's *stubborn* - augustin figures out when comments turn into conversations turn into exchanges and into debates #and he *likes* debating - they have that in common #tbh neither of them back down from their own stances and augustin would say theres never someone who comes on top #until one time when augustin is quite sure he's got this one #but then eoin mcgonigal just delivers one final blow in perfect french that leaves him just ?????¿¿¿¿¿???#and he's a bit speechless #and eoin just smiles his usual smile and stretches and leaves like it's nothing and MON DIEU does he make augustin OH so curious #and that's the only reason he stares #NYWAY this is super self indulgent id say more but tag limit POINT IS love em they shouldve met paddy has 2 hands (as do they)

i love it when i look up a french word i don't know in a french-english dictionary and the english equivalent given is. a different french word. for example:

diane = reveille (military wake-up call)

blanc-seing = carte blanche (free pass)

the relationship between french and the language that borrowed half of its vocabulary is something that can actually be so comical.

#i try to use logic when i don't know what a word means but that can only take you so far #you can't see a word you don't know and be like 'well diane can't mean reveille because surely they'd use réveille or réveil or whatever'#turns out you can have more than one word for the same thing. especially if one of them is old-fashioned or literary or formal #french #english #my posts #f
