i know you posted your thoughts on the big arguing scene in “we need to talk about pete” but i was wondering if you were going to post a full breakdown? that episode was a lot and i love hearing your thoughts on eps. ignore this if you have done a breakdown and i’m dumb and just missed it lol
**spoilers for the war of bugs and rats and we need to talk about pete**
What’s up denizens of Magic NYC? Now, I unfortunately live in normal NYC where I have to pay bills and stuff so I’ve been MIA with recaps for the past few eps but, no sweat. We’re gonna do a double feature of the above two eps and then I’ll group in the last battle episode with the upcoming episode. So lets catch up on what’s been going on in The Unsleeping City There’s a LOT to get through so vámanos y'all.
First up, we have our big bug fight in Queens, which Sophie enters with a camelback full of box wine because Emily is Emily.
“I’ve heard of gentrification but this is crazy!”
Brennan enjoys making those gross, chittering, bug noises way too much.
Have we talked about Pete’s cowboy hat? Because, for real, what is up with Pete’s cowboy hat? It seems absolutely apropos of nothing. Was he just like, “Sick,” and he decided to wear it everywhere? That seems to be how he makes all of his decisions.
“Butthole 2: Electric Boogaloo.”
Emily clocks the cat *immediately*. Like to the point where I’m almost thinking, “Did this cat exist before Emily mentioned looking for one?” And I want to say yes because La Gran Gata seems very fleshed out, specific, and intentional. But folks, we are living in a post-Avanash world so idk what to think. (Edit: The cat does have a mini now that I’ve gotten to that but idk, that insert shot could have been shot post ep so like, who knows?)
Anyway, Emily’s entire mission objective immediately becomes saving this cat she’s vaguely aware of.
“5E you crazy.”
The Cast, Knowing Emily just rolled a 25 and still has a 1d8 Bless in Her Back Pocket if She Needs It: Brennan, Just Ask.
The horror on Emily’s face when she realizes that she just called an attack on the cat cocoon.
So Emily goes off on a very Emily side quest to rescue a random cat but happens to unlock a very cool NPC–La Gran Gata–who is like the spirit of all the bodega cats out there. Sophie immediately calls upon the entirety of her limited Spanish skills to try and make friends with the cat, and succeeds.
The, “To arms, to arms my brothers!” thing kills me every time. Are all rats just Like That? Is that what they’re like when they’re out and about too?
Kingston rolling a nat 20 to literally walk across the store is wild.
Oh also, Pete failed a wild magic surge roll which just lets him fly. So far, those wild magic surges have really been working out for him.
Anyway, Bug Boss Becky turns Ricky into a “buff-ass” dog.
Zac playing dog-Ricky with almost exactly the same self-awareness (or lack thereof) as normal-Ricky is so funny. He’s an Akita and I was expecting Dalmatian but that makes sense too. Ricky, the very good boy, attacks Becky and–as a Sentinel–stops her in her tracks.
Emily does a ton of damage and Brennan, about to describe her attack, is like, “Are you still drunk?” Emily shuts down the opportunity to look cooler and is like, “I am a messy, drunk bitch. Describe that.” Emily isn’t here to be cool. Emily is here to roleplay.
I had never heard the word brindled before now and Brennan uses it to describe two separate animals in this ep.
Siobhan rolls a nat 20 to dispel magic on Ricky which is objectively good but also I would have loved for him to be a dog a little longer. Also, this moment makes me really, really want to get some backstory on Misty. Like, clearly there are some serious Fae Shenanigans going on with her and I need specifics yesterday.
Also, Ricky comes back with pointier ears and wolfier senses and I’m just picturing Channing Tatum in Jupiter Ascending.
Before I forget, Sophie, Pete, and Misty yoink magical items from the magic bodega within the bodega La Gran Gata opened up. Sophie’s is a magic ring that amps up her punches. Misty took a mirror and Pete took a grill (like for your teeth). Not sure what those do yet.
The fact that this whole fight wasn’t under the Umbral Arcana and there are people out there that remember is a little concerning for me. I can’t quite tell if it’s the sort of thing that will come back or more of a warning of what can happen if the U.A. goes down again.
Post-fight, Sophie asks La Gran Gata for mismatched David Bowie eyes like the cat has. Siobahn goes, “That’s what you’re gonna ask? You drunk bitch.” But Sophie has her wish granted. I’m sure that won’t raise any questions with people who have known her her entire life.
“She’s gonna fuck that cat.”
So the fight’s over and they realize that the Key to the City is missing which I can’t imagine is a good thing.
This brings us to the RP ep, We Need to Talk About Pete, which picks up directly where the previous ep ended.
Ally and Emily go for the exact same joke of getting Guinness’s post-fight. Kingston–as a medical professional, Vox Populi, and sanest adult of this troupe–loudly objects (smacking the beers out of Pete’s hands multiple times) and wants to know what the hell is going on with the bugs they just fought.
Sidenote: Sophie took a level in Warlock with La Gran Gata as her patron because of *course* she did. I wonder if this was the plan from the beginning or if Emily was watching all her friends spellcasting and started getting the jitters from magic user withdrawal.
Murph’s “What?” face when Emily says, “I’ll be waiting, but not in an impatient, desperate way,” is gold.
They search the bodega and find a thing of 1000 Hour Energy and Kugrash gives it to Ricky over Pete’s objections. They also find Holy Grail Laundry Detergent (Kingston pays for it), The Grill I mentioned earlier (Kingston hates this), and this bagel.
All the magic users show up. Alejandro wants an explanation pronto and everyone points a finger at Pete who explains everything in his typical, nonchalant, vague, kinda spaced out way which Alejandro is not digging at all. He starts to go off on the enormity of the situation and Pete starts dropping acid.
I’m gonna stop here for a sec to talk about how Ally is playing Pete. There are moments when I feel like Ally is doing something as a comedian for a bit. And there’s kind of a sense of, is this funny? Obviously. But what are the in game implications of this move? Like the running joke of Pete constantly being high on something is funny, out of game. But, in game, it’s massively concerning. And I’m really curious about where Ally is choosing to draw the line between doing the funny thing and doing the prudent thing. I almost said the in-character thing but Ally made a character so consistently bonkers that whatever he does could plausibly be the in-character thing. Pete is kind of a massive disaster.
Anyway, Alejandro drives home the point that Pete’s actions have consequences and have caused actual deaths at this point. Pete’s magic is internally going wonky as he gets more distressed (I really wanted to see a wild magic surge fail here but alas). But he’s still outwardly like a 4 on the giving a damn scale when the situation is a 13 out of 10. Pete is only half listening to this because he’s halfway out the door, smoking. Alejandro plans with Kingston to discuss Pete later.
Misty, always sowing seeds of chaos, suggests Alejandro stock up on Juul pods before they stop selling them completely. Kingston hates this (this is basically his mood for the episode).
Outside, Pete gets a text from Priya which ends with them planning a meet up for later after leaving her on read for a while. Pete dips without saying anything to anyone but Kingston who ignores him (and also Sophie who Emily hilariously guilts Ally into including out of character). Dipping on the conversation about how to fix YOUR mess isn’t the wisest move but Pete isn’t the wisest guy.
In the meantime, Ricky does the Twilight Bark to summon a dalmatian (yes!) to help him find the stolen key to the city. Kugrash turns into a busted ass dalmatian who has trouble keeping up.
Ricky doesn’t have the plate mail armor that usually makes a Paladin so unstealthy but he is so hot as to have the same lack of stealthiness which is one of my favorite adaptations of the game for this setting. Anyway, Ricky does the superhero thing of running through the city, helping everyone with a problem along the way, and loses the key in the Financial District which smells like death (feels about right).
Siobahn playing Misty as, “Oh, I can’t believe I didn’t realize it was Emma Lazarus,” when, in reality, she was the first person who made the connection was great. S/o to ppl who separate player and character knowledge. Misty partied w/ Emma of course because she partied with every historical figure that’s passed through NYC since she showed up.
Post adventure, people need to go to their day jobs. Misty has a +10 to performance but rolling a 3 is rolling a 3. It’s not her best work. Later, her assistant brings her holly, silver, and assorted other stuff which sounds like Fae BS if I’ve ever heard it. Misty cuts her off before she can elaborate more. I know we’re getting a secret spilling episode next time so I’m really hoping we get some Misty lore because she is being frustratingly cagey. She talks so much but says so little that means anything.
Kugrash sneaks into his son David’s house (while Emily learns a rat fact she clearly didn’t want to know) and Murph and Brennan tag team go for the proverbial emotional jugular.
Murph rolls a nat 20 on his investigate and so he gets a lot of his old files and puts together that Robert is Robert Moses–a famous historical figure in NY who I actually heard about for the first time very recently. Or maybe I should say infamous. He did a lot with NY infrastructure–especially highways–(Emily connects this to the Highway Hex immediately) and he wasn’t exactly the warm and fuzzy type. His bread and butter was working the system. There’s a Pulitzer winning book called The Power Broker about how he was able to amass power and influence. I don’t know enough about NY history to run my mouth off about the guy but the little I do know is in character with his T.U.S. incarnation. Also, just FYI, irl this dude died in the 80s. So, you know. That’s interesting.
Brennan, I guess: Why invent new bad guys when history is full of terrible people I just have to give magic to?
Brennan, continuing his tradition of letting people get emotionally destroyed by nat 20s, has Murph find a crushing letter from David to Kug which was never mailed.
Note: So, as I was writing this, my video timed out right at the line, “I don’t expect this letter to find you before my funeral,” which is kinda good bc idk if this is what I need at 1 AM. Anyway, back to the pain.
The letter reveals that David has devoted his life to stopping crooks like him (Kug) and that he’s mostly upset about how his leaving has affected the younger, more fragile Wally.
“I leave the letter because I’ll remember it.” Yeah I bet you will.
It looks like Kug is gonna confront Wally next ep which I am now even more excited to see.
So let’s move onto the SECOND big gut-punch of the episode. Kingston goes down to the station to give a statement about the Santa Incident. He sees a shit elemental in a lineup which isn’t super relevant to the main events but I can’t not mention something like that.
Anyway, guess what? Kingston’s ex (Liz) isn’t dead! She’s an attorney for the justice system of The Unsleeping City and she’s pissed the hell off. During their interview, he stops the tape recorder to cuss out Kingston for going on a “date” with Misty and for getting her involved in all the magical junk which means she has to do things like fingerprint shit elementals instead of being on track to be D.A. like she originally was. The way she described it made it sound like she was press ganged into it which seems like it shouldn’t be how this works, you know? Is there no blue pill option here? Also, not to be all grass is greener but I actually am a lawyer in NY (closer to Kug’s job, minus the crime) and I would swap with Liz in a heartbeat.
The fact that anything Kingston says as Vox is per se admissible is a cool detail.
Sophie fights an old man (Jackson) in a CVS and joins a monastery which sounds like a shitpost but it isn’t. With La Gran Gata’s blessing she is now a member of the Order of the Concrete Fist.
I saw the Staten Island joke coming the second Brennan started talking but it was still hysterical when it landed.
At the same time, Pete is getting knuckle tats because, sure. And he also goes to see Priya who I am baffled was with him for any length of time. Maybe it’s the artist thing?
Also, Sophie keeps postponing her meeting with Mario which is concerning to me. The story is still happening when you’re not interacting with it. Brennan specifically said when she texted him that she got no response which doesn’t make me feel good about what’s going on with him.
Ricky has three super jacked, fratty firefighter bros, all named John who are like woke as hell. I wish I could follow the dude around for a day because every single facet of his life is wild.
Well, this episode promised we were gonna talk about Pete so let’s talk about Pete.
The gang, sans Pete, meet up with the magical powers that be to discus the destruction the newest Vox his leaving in his wake.
Sidenote, wild that Sophie has been magic for like 15 minutes and got to go to this meeting.
Alejandro wants to know what the plan is for if Pete’s powers go off the rails again. Kingston, who has clearly seen Old Yeller, offers the most drastic solution immediately: if it comes to it, we take him out. (Cut to Ally’s “Yikes” face). Kug, Sophie, and Ricky push back on that.
Misty, hilariously (and also suspiciously), is mainly concerned about NY because she needs theater to keep happening. This woman is chaotic something and I’m not convinced it’s chaotic good yet.
Anyway, I already did my big write-up on this part of the episode, but I’ll say it again: Kingston is right. He’s harsh but he’s right. This is some Phoenix Force BS that’s happening and do you know how that arc ends (the OG one, not the million other Phoenix Sagas that have happened since)? It ends with Jean Grey killing herself so she doesn’t lose control and eat another planet. Ricky is too dangerous for his own good and he doesn’t seem to have the emotional maturity to care (or at least to care at the correct level). Like, he was a drug dealer when this started which is already not ideal. He caused a huge mess and then just bounced without trying to help fix it. He thought that a week was enough time for human casualties to be water under the bridge. Frankly, not considering the nuclear option and just having to figure out if killing him is something the group is willing to do on the fly would be the more irresponsible option.
And not including Pete in the discussion would bother me more if he hadn’t openly blown off every serious discussion people have tried to have with him so far. If he’s not going to take things seriously, it makes sense they don’t invite him to the serious discussions.
The version of this story where Pete accidentally gets a bunch of people killed, finds out what he did, cries about it for a full day, and then finds out they’re talking about possibly killing him is a story where Pete is more sympathetic imo. But still, finding out that people talked about killing you under any circumstances has got to be rough.
IMO, the order of things that should be done right now are (1) putting magical training wheels on Pete, (2a) getting Pete trained or his powers transferred if it’s possible/he wants out, (2b) either way, getting Pete into therapy (like, he needed therapy before he got magic. now it’s just a matter of life and death–besides just his own), (3) talking to Pete again about the stakes and telling him point blank but not in while heated that there’s the possibility of a scenario where his powers go out of control and you have to understand that at that point it’s a matter of saving as many lives as possible. Like, Kingston can say, with conviction, “If I go rogue, you should do the same to me.” They’re in the same boat. Kingston’s just been rowing longer. Well, similar boats anyway. I imagine the Vox Populi powers are less inherently chaotic. And maybe the knowledge that a nuclear option is on the table would make Pete not want the job or want him to have his powers muted or something. Cool. Then you have that discussion at that point. Just, these are the conversations that need to happen. And maybe his own mortality will be the thing that helps get Pete’s head in the game.
What jewel did Ale take out of his pocket during this conversation? Taking note of that. (Juul, not jewel. Duh. Thx thethief )
Pete gets in touch w/ Alejandro’s granddaughters who tell him that Alejandro’s still pretty pissed (which is surprising to Pete but like, bro. People died). Then, Robert shows up to sweet talk Pete and show him the video (that he somehow has) of Kingston talking at the Pete Meeting. When I was watching this the first time I was like, “How long before this blows up in their face–oh, almost immediately. Cool.”
He takes Pete to his vampire nightclub and hits him with Pete’s own “I didn’t create the demand” line that you just know Brennan put a pin in to hit Pete with that Uno Reverse card.
Robert tries to get Pete to summon Nod and then just does it forcibly with some kind of blood magic when Pete is hesitant. Pete wild magic surges, kills a bunch of vamps, and Nod (super injured by being in the waking world) teleports them both to the subway.
The group (including Alejandro) meets them there so they can catch the L train to Nod but Epona shows up. And you already know from Fantasy High that Brennan is on the ACAB train (or is that AFCAB?). Epona is now wearing a crooked badge–crooked badge for a crooked cop. She wants Nod. No can do. The gang gets ready to–to quote Mr. Cubby-make some bacon while Alejandro tries to cast a spell to summon a train to Nod (the place not the person).
So I’ll see y’all next time (whenever that is) for some subway fighting and some backstory unlocking!

Between him and the world.
Excerpt from: Lingering by @distant-rose (She left a whumpy detail undescribed so ... obviously I had to write the backstory thing.) Starts as an angsty chat, turns into fanficing in @pirate-owl‘s inbox....as I do. Complete with occasional conversational detours for @distant-rose‘s entertainment :P
She finds a particularly jagged scar cutting across the left side of abdomen, cleverly hidden by the dark body of a vicious looking shark. She runs her fingers along it, studying it with a small frown.“Where did you get this guy?”
“The shark? Ages ago. Was drunk and thought it would look menacing.”
“I wasn’t talking about the shark,” Emma replies, deliberating tracing the old wound and looking up at him with raised eyebrows. “I’m talking about the scar.”
Killian is silent for a long moment, to the point that Emma is certain that he’s never going to answer her. However, he opens his mouth and lets out a shaky breath before speaking in a low voice just above a whisper. “When I was boy…There was a captain of a ship who…he…he wasn’t a good man and he threatened my brother with a knife when he thought we were knicking his rum…I got in between them.”
“How old were you?”
“Ten.”
@gusenitsaa : I mean that’s an @icecubelotr44 level tempting tidbit
@pirate-owl : wow Liam would have been pissed. Not at the man threatening him, he is used to threats, but at his idiot little brother who got in the way. And Liam is better at defusing a potentially violent situation than Killian is. No one might have been stabbed if Killian hadn't gotten involved. Or Liam might have, but since when has that mattered to Liam?
Gusenitsaa: Also, ironically I suspect Liam was actually nicking his rum. How else does he usually manage to have a bit on hand for when Killian gets himself hurt?
Pirate-Owl: Ugh! That just makes it worse! :’( :’( :’( Ooooh! Do you that is what gives Liam his insanely protective complex?
Gusenitsaa: I dunno. Killian is what, 10. How long has brennan been gone at that point in your head canon?
Pirate-Owl: Killian was nine or ten when Brennan sold them. At least in my headcanon.
Gusenitsaa: Right.... the actors age thing is screwing me up again because lil' liam is definitely not 16-17
Pirate-Owl: It can go as low as maybe seven or eight if I really want an age gap. But yeah, Liam I usually headcanon as maybe five years older than Killian, and that is at the upper limit of the age gap.
Gusenitsaa: Well I guess it depends on that. If brennan had been gone for three years before this happened I kinda doubt liam managed to avoid a complex for so long. But if this is fairly soon after brennan left its definitely the kind of mess that could traumatize him into the obsessed-with-protecting-the-little-one mess we know and love
Pirate-Owl: Yeah. If this is soon, then it could totally be where Liam got his complex. But I think he managed to avoid a complex for like a week before he was that lovable traumatized mess.
Gusenitsaa: And we know I do love the head canon that it wasn't just a gradual transition. I do love the idea of " Something " happening that triggered him to suddenly realign every priority the way he does
Pirate-Owl: Yeah. I think it makes more sense. I mean you could make a convincing argument for Brennan selling them being the Something, but honestly it's more interesting fun in line with what little we know about him before and after if there was some other specific catalyst that prompted it
Gusenitsaa: yeah almost watching your 10 year old brother die because you weren't careful covering your tracks knicking the supplies you need
Pirate-Owl: That does seem like a fairly extreme Something.
Gusenitsaa: course its worse if it wasn't actually about rum as a disinfectant and it was a teenaged liam's half a second of being a normal teenage boy.....
Pirate-Owl: :’( Which is why he never lets himself be a normal teenage boy ever again. :’( :’( :’(
Gusenitsaa: Like 15 yo Liam: does something that like 90% of teenagers have done at some point *almost gets his little brother killed * Well.... I guess I'll just never ever be a kid ever again. cool. cool.
Pirate-Owl: Yeah. Sounds exactly like Liam.
Gusenitsaa:
It hadn’t even been enough to get him tipsy.
It was a feeble protest and one that he was smart enough to keep locked behind his lips when the captain confronted him about the swallow of rum that he shouldn’t have possibly been able to notice was missing from the captain’s bottle and maybe he didn’t know -maybe he just guessed- Liam’s mind was scrambling. It was a stupid, foolish impulse. A reckless and useless act of rebellion against a situation he couldn’t escape and he’d regretted it practically as soon as the liquid burned its way passed his lips. That was two days ago now and he’d thought it had gone unnoticed.
Until now.
The captain looked like he’d had more than a swallow or two by the time he confronted Liam, cornering him below where he’d been helping Killian to stack crates. He thought at first he was going to be yelled at for assisting his little brother… again… but it was nonsense. Killian, all of ten years old last week he shoved the bitterness down further and closed that trunk hard He was too little to lift the crates, and couldn’t reach high enough to tie them securely in place. Liam had wondered more than once if giving this job to a nine ten year old was more about giving him an excuse to ‘correct’ the boy later than it was about actually wanting the hold ‘organized.’
Pirate-Owl: :’( :’( :’(
Gusenitsaa:
Regardless, the captain seemed not even to notice Killian, who shrank back behind a crate instinctively when he came bellowing down. Liam shot his brother a look that he hoped communicated do. not. move. and glanced into the enraged and drunken eyes of their owner captain.
If he admitted it, he was dead.
Stealing from the captain didn't have degrees on this ship so Liam adopted an apologetic submissive expression... then lied through his teeth. "I never would, captain, I swear it.'
The captain was unimpressed, pressing closer until Liam could smell the rum. It smelled far fouler now on his captain’s breath than it had tasted.
“You’re worthless-“ the captain sneered. “Don’t know why I keep either of you brats.”
Liam shoved the indignation down and kept his tone calm and deferring. “We work hard, Cap’n.”
“Just another damned mouth to feed. It’s no wonder your father left you behind. I should have kept the boat.”
Yes, you should have.
He kept his eyes locked in the captain’s direction, trying to suppress the urge to glance at Killian to see his reaction. Even at barely ten years old he gave Liam's temper a run for its money. Twice the fire and half the will to keep it reigned in, all in a tiny package barely tall enough to reach the top of one of these crates .
Apologize first. Avert the captain’s rage first. Hate him later. Survive first, think later.
“I’m sorry you think so, cap’n-“
The captain sneered and didn’t let him finish, charging forward before Liam had time to blink. He sees a flash of silver and he froze, unable to think, unable to decide… can’t fight back, it’ll get them killed, can’t run away there’s no where to run.
And then every alarm bell in his 15 year old brain went off at once because his little spitfire-of-a-brother had darted out from behind the crate faster than lightening.
“No, K-“ It was too late. Killian barreled between Liam and his captain. A quiet hiss of breath and the captain stumbled back. Rage and confusion balanced precariously for a moment that something had come between him and his target. Then the man grinned and Liam’s stomach sank. He reached for Killian, tugging him behind him an eternity too late as the captain laughed.
There was blood on his hands. It took Liam a moment to realize that it was on his own hands too.
Pirate-Owl: :’( :’( :’(
Gusenitsaa:
He took his eyes off his laughing captain to where he held Killian pressed to his side with one arm. Killian looked a little sick and his hands were pressed tight to his stomach, bright red blood seeping between his fingers.
No.
Liam turned fully to Killian as he sagged, the words of the captain entirely irrelevant now. He thought he’d heard something about ‘a lesson’ but he just didn’t care enough to turn back. Apparently the captain decided that he’d done enough because a blade didn’t slide between his ribs while he sank to the ground with Killian.
“Killian what the devil were you thinking?” he hissed. Killian grinned up at him. It was more grimace than grin, admittedly, but Liam saw the defiant spark in his little brother’s eye and shook his head, hands hesitating for only a moment before pulling off his tunic to press it against the wound. He wished he had something better, something cleaner, but there was nothing in this room save boxes and ropes and Killian’s smirk had fallen, replaced with a groan as Liam pressed down on it.
“That’s what you get, you-” He trailed off, Some poorly thought through chastisement on the tip of his tongue but his mouth dried up on the word ‘bloody.’ “Killian, look at me.”Killian’s eyes slanted open and Liam nodded. “Good. It’s not bad, all right? You’re going to fine. I’m going to take care of you.”
Pirate-Owl: (Do at least try to remember that Killian has to survive to tell the story of the scar later)
Gusenitsaa: plot twist, it wasn't liam's first deal with a devil. except even I'm not awful enough to kill a fictional ten year old
Pirate-Owl: It's always good to know what your limit is. Stabbing a fictional ten year old is acceptable but killing one isn't.
Gusenitsaa: technically distant rose stabbed him
Pirate-Owl : She didn't run with it!
Gusenitsaa: I'm just leveraging it to break a 15 year old utterly...
Pirate-Owl: *sideeyes*
Gusenitsaa:
“Killian, look at me.” Killian’s eyes slanted open and Liam nodded. “Good. It’s not bad, all right? You’re going to fine. I’m going to take care of you.”
“I know,” came the breathy response. The words hurt. Gods they hurt more than anything Killian could have said in that moment. Killian trusted him. Trusted him completely and this was all his fault…(though I suspect later brennan will get his share of the blame)
Pirate-Owl: :’( :’( :’(
Gusenitsaa:
He thought that quiet assurance had hurt more than anything else could. He was wrong. One moment Killian's gaze had been steady and assured then something in Liam's face must have faltered and Killian's face fell with it, a hint of a scared ten year old peaking through the cracks.
"It's alright," Liam reassured quietly, fighting to keep the uncertainty from his voice and his hands steady. He desperately wanted to lift the fabric slightly, but he was afraid to remove the makeshift bandage which already seemed to be doing so little to slow the flow of blood. He pulled a small knife in a leather sheath from his pocket. It didn't belong to him, was just granted to him for the job of cutting the ropes."Bite down on this," Liam said quietly, and Killian obliged, all too familiar with this dance. Liam folded the messy layers of his now scarlet tunic on top of each other to thicken the bandage and pressed down hard. "Sorry, little brother," he muttered under his breath when Killian went stiff, a small whimper all the noise he permitted himself. He was too young. Too young to know how to do that.
Liam cursed Brennan again.
The blood chilled on Liam's hands and Killian shivered. He was pale and looked a little glassy eyed but he held Liam's gaze for a moment. Liam tugged him closer, risking taking one hand from the wound to pull Killian into his lap. Killian rested his head against Liam, looking sleepy and befuddled, as though he'd just woken up from a long nap. He should be in a warm bed with a doctor to care for him. He shouldn't be here at all.
Pirate-Owl: :’(
Gusenitsaa:
The sheath fell from Killian's mouth as his head dropped heavier against his brother, dragged under by a tide of exhaustion and blood loss. The blade landed with a thump on the wood next to them, and Liam's rising panic was calmed slightly by Killian meeting his eyes. "Just resting" Killian said weakly. Liam's eyes slipped to the knife next to them. It was a little thing, barely long enough for the job he was expected to do with it.
Long enough to rip out the captain's throat.
The thought came to him in a surprising calmness. It wasn't threat or despair. He just knew, in that moment, that if Killian didn't survive neither would the captain. It was little comfort.
(It is a truth universally acknowledged that in every universe... liam is one bad day away from murder. Apparently even at 15)
Pirate-Owl: (Does it really count as murder if he is killing the man who owns him?)
Gusenitsaa: justifiable homicide is probably not a thing that exists in this contexts though it probably should
Pirate-Owl: Yeah. I don't think the crew would care why.
Gusenitsaa:
Killian's shivering was growing worse by the moment, and Liam tugged him closer, wondering if he dared move Killian yet. There wasn't much in terms of blankets aboard, but this time of year there was little competition for them, the room felt warm to Liam even as Killian trembled. Killian had always been the little one, and now, fighting for every crust, Liam supposed he always would be. He could move Killian, yes, but it would mean taking the pressure off his wound. Was it a good trade for the chance to get him wrapped up in some blankets and ease the trembling? He took Killian's hand and his little brother opened one eye. "Can you hold it?" he asked quietly.
Killian nodded instantly, agreeing probably before he’d had the chance to think about it. Liam waited a moment to see if he would change his mind. Killian’s hand replaced Liam’s and Liam scooped Killian up quickly, making for the crews quarters.
It was a risk. There were some among the crew who would use this weakness to their advantage, but Liam had a blade in his pocket and he couldn’t hide Killian in the hold forever. He needed water and blankets and a real doctor.
Pirate-Owl: :’( :’(
Gusenitsaa:
This crew had no real doctor. They had a surgeon. A man who was more accurately described as a butcher than a doctor. Good for little more than wrapping up wounds and chopping off limbs. Liam shuddered slightly at the thought. He could find the blankets and water at least.
He settled Killian in the bunk they shared. It was a tiny thing, though that rarely bothered them. It was unusual for them to share a shift off, in fact it only ever happened when one of them was injured badly enough that the captain was forced to give them a few hours of unscheduled relief or risk the loss of a pair of working hands and then it was a relief to have the other close enough to watch their back. Today was no exception. Liam hesitated, once Killian was settled, the prospect of leaving him alone unnerving. He fished the tiny knife from his pocket and pressed it into Killian's grip.
"I'll be back as soon as I can." Killian had done well, jaw tight, but letting no sound of weakness escape him as Liam carried him into the crew's quarters. Now he whimpered slightly and Liam tousled his hair. "Count to 100 little brother, and I'll be back."
Killian nodded and Liam could see his lips moving, the count beginning under his breath. Liam did the same, moving from the side of the cot in search of water and blankets. 4...5...6...
The warmth of the season meant sheets were available, fortunately, though stashed in various nooks and crannies. When he found them they were musty from the hold but thankfully dry. 40... 41... 42... He shook them out and threw several over a shoulder. Water was both easier and harder, depending on who watched the barrel today. 56... 57... 58... Liam was relieved to see one of the younger crewman there. He had no taste for generosity or for malace, which was about as good as he could hope for. Liam offered both Killian's flask and his own to the man for their daily water ration and he filled it without objection. It was very nearly the only thing that had gone right today.
He returned to Killian's side before he reached 90 and Killian gave him a relieved smile. Liam helped him sit up and Liam cut a strip from one of the cleaner sheets to serve as a bandage. Liam tied it overtop of his now scarlet tunic, still too afraid to risk moving it yet. He pulled out Killian's flask and offered it to him. "Slowly," he warned. They were not becalmed and water rations were reasonable at the moment but they didn't have enough to risk Killian being sick even with Liam’s own flask full as well. Killian sipped at the flask and Liam helped him lay down again with a grimace, tucking the sheets in around Killian tightly. His motions were quick and efficient and he barely realized how little he'd spoken to Killian since this all started until Killian's small voice jerked him out of his head.
"Are you angry with me, Liam?"
"No." Liam replied instantly, without thinking, and then he glanced sideways at Killian. Sod it. "Yes. Yes, I am you idiot you could have been killed."
"He was going to hurt you. You'd have done it for me."
"That's different," Liam snapped, not bothering to explain. "Promise me you'll never do that again."
Killian shook his head and Liam stared bewildered.
"I mean it Killian, promise" Pirate-Owl: I feel like sobbing emojis are redundant... and yet...
Gusenitsaa:
Killian shook his head again and Liam cursed his stupid stubborn git-of-a-brother who was so determined to drive him mad. He was ten. Ten years old and already more stubborn than a mule. He was just a kid, and yet somehow inexplicably felt it was a reasonable thing to refuse to promise not to step in front of a knife again.
Liam wanted to shake him. To order him, to beg him to make that promise but he could see the futility of it in Killian's eyes. He sighed instead. Killian was still trembling and Liam shifted, helping Killian to move a bit towards the wall so he could lay along the edge of the cot, between Killian and the rest of the crew's quarters.
Between Killian and the world.

Emily Deschanel On Season 4 Of Animal Kingdom and the Legacy of Bones
Bones star Emily Deschanel tracked down criminals as forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan on the Fox series. Now Deschanel, 42, plays Angela, a drug addict who cozies up to the Cody family in season four of TNT’s crime drama Animal Kingdom (May 28).
You spent 12 seasons upholding the law on Bones. What’s it like now to be on the other side?
It’s a lot of fun. I have two sons [Henry, 7, and Calvin, 3] and they love playing bad guys a lot of times. There’s something about human nature that makes you enjoy doing it. But the fun part about it is to see it from the character’s perspective, like, why are they doing these things?
I don’t think anyone sets out to be evil or do bad things. Maybe a few people do, but they have reasons why they do what they do and they probably think that they’re doing something for a good reason. So, that’s what’s been really fun, to see from this character’s perspective why she’s doing certain things. It’s been unclear as we’ve been working how bad she is, what she’s up to, and what is she scheming?
Who is Angela?
She’s basically a family friend. She’s a recovering heroin addict who just got out of prison. She said she went to prison for breaking and entering, but you never know what to believe exactly.
What are scenes like with Ellen Barkin, the head of the Cody family?
I’m a huge fan. What an amazingly talented actor and strong female. We get to battle. It’s fun to do rehearsals with her. We’re at odds, so there are times where her character [Smurf] is throwing things to get me out of the room.
When Bones wrapped, what was it that you wanted most to do?
At the end of 12 seasons, I was just run ragged. I wanted to sleep for months and spend time with my kids. I was able to calm down, get healthy, get better. I’m on my road to being healthy and finding balance in my life.
You and your sister, Zooey, acted together on Bones. Any future plans to work together?
We talk about it all the time. I don’t know about acting together, but we are talking about working together in different ways. So that’s definitely on the table.
How much of Angela’s plan do you know?
I’ve come back in to infiltrate. I want to get in there but it’s unclear exactly what I’m after. Angela was the best friend of Ellen Barkin’s character’s dead daughter, so she plays a family friend, essentially. She’s been around the family since they were really young. She was the drug buddy of the daughter who died of a heroin overdose. So she is not met with open arms at the Cody house.
She decides to seduce one of the brothers to get in there. She has a lot of affection for J, because he was Angela’s best friend’s son and, in her mind, she helped raise him. It probably means that she would have him shoot her up and then they’d watch cartoons together. But in her mind, she helped raise him. She was his auntie, so to speak, because his mother had been estranged from the family for many years when she died.
You had your own TV family for 12 years. What was it like to slide into a new show, where the cast had already been together for three seasons?
It’s a totally different thing, but they’ve been very welcoming. I, obviously, love working with Ellen, and every other actor’s been so warm, sweet and very inclusive. I mostly have worked with Shawn Hatosy, who’s just lovely, and I work with Finn Cole, who plays J. They’ve all been so great. I’ve also done quick scenes with some of the other characters, too, and they’re really lovely. I feel very welcome there.
It’s a totally different thing. It feels weird to come in but this is exactly the kind of job that I wanted to find, where I’m not working every day, because I did that for 12 years and I didn’t get to see my kids very much. Hence, I took two years off, so I could spend time with them.
But it’s a funny job. I worked yesterday and I don’t come back until next week, and then I’ll probably have more in the next episode. Each episode is different. Also, it’s weird because I’m used to seeing the crew every day and being around the same people, where you have a sure hand. So it’s different, but I love new experiences and new situations, so it’s been a lot of fun.
You said you took two years off to spend time with your kids, so were you looking to come back or was it just this role that appealed to you?
I just had mentioned to my representative, who was very patient with me—because I’ve not been interested in jobs and I’ve been saying no for a long time. I said, “Get me a four-episode arc on a show. That’s what I want to do. I don’t want to move to Romania for nine months.”
So pretty soon after I said that, this came up. It’s more than four episodes. I come in in the second episode and I’m in most of the season for the rest of the 13 episodes. So it’s definitely more than I initially wanted to do. These are the things I wanted: I didn’t want to go far away. I wanted to be coming into something. I wanted to be a guest star. I didn’t want to sign a contract and have to show up all the time. And I wanted to play a completely different character on something totally different, and that’s exactly what this was. It’s almost like I manifested it to happen. Not to get all The Secret on you—I’m not even somebody who believes in that stuff, but it was kind of amazing that it just happened.
Like you said, I was on the “right” side of the law and now I’m on the other side of the law and it’s a lot of fun. I played a character; literally her name was Temperance, which means sobriety, essentially. And now I’m playing a heroin addict. I’m having a real fun time diving into the character and figuring out what makes her tick and where she’s coming from. I love human behavior and, of course, I have compassion for any character I play, so I love coming in with that perspective.
When you look back at Bones, what do you hope its legacy will be?
I think that there’s been lots of shows that came before Bones that certainly inspired our show and certainly have their place in television: from The X-Files to Moonlighting. I think that Bones is unique for its tone. I think at that time, crime shows took themselves pretty seriously and we had a lighter tone. The creator of the show, Hart Hanson, liked to call it a “crime-edy.”
I think that it was uniquely balanced with drama and comedy. Within one scene, we would go from dramatic to comedic. I think that it also had such a strong group of characters played by strong actors, who were like a family, with Booth [David Boreanaz] and Brennan being at the core of that and their relationship.
I always look at things from a feminist perspective, and I love that we never shied away from the fact that my character made more money than Booth and I had a bigger office than him. All the women had bigger, nicer offices than the men on that show, and my character was a strong, smart woman who was not shying away from that. She would be the first to tell you that she was a genius, and I just loved that.
I don’t know where it falls and what thing will be the main thing that it will be remembered for, but I think that those are the things that made it unique in the landscape of television at that time.
One thing that I know is you’re always very involved in is animal rights. What are you currently working on?
I’m very involved with Farm Sanctuary, which is the largest farm animal sanctuary in the country. The organization not only houses animals that have been saved from factory farming, but it educates people about factory farming; the realities of it. It also works to advocate for those animals through laws and different campaigns, and it provides people with experiences with these animals.
Right now they have two places where you can come and visit animals. One’s outside of Los Angeles in Acton, California, which is like 45 minutes outside of Los Angeles. And then we have Watkins Glen, which is absolutely stunning, outside of New York City in the Finger Lakes area.

Chapter 2:
The road so far... Alice gives up her life as a hunter because of love. She is killed protecting her baby. Brennan takes his boys from town to town unable to get over his broken heart which leads to a life of crime. In the end, he leaves his sons behind to a life of servitude to save himself.
...
Liam and Killian had endured years of servitude under Captain Silver. The abandonment of their father had broken Killian. Liam, on the other hand, had to grow up fast and attempt to be the father they both should have had.
Eventually, they had become deckhands on the ship and started earning wages for their work. "Killian with our wages we can enlist in the king's navy. We can become men of honor. I know mother would have wanted that for us."
"I don't remember mum. I wish I did."
"I barely remember her too but I know she loved us and would have never left us given the choice."
"You mean unlike father," Killian responds with a raised eyebrow.
"I never want him to be mentioned. He doesn't deserve it."
"Liam, about the Navy - I know you will be a fine sailor. I'm afraid I'm not like you, brother."
"Killian, you are a good man and we will both join the Navy and become Captains of our own ship someday."
Killian finally relented and they shared a hug.
"All we need to do is buy our freedom and then we will be able to enlist in the King's Navy."
It sounded so simple when his brother said the words. He would gladly follow in his brother's steps.
Only a few more months at sea serving the dishonorable Captain Silver and they would reach their goal. He had taken advantage of the young boys for far too long. Once Liam was able to keep track of the debt, Captain Silver knew their time would run out and with it, the crew's entertainment.
Liam had to keep an eye on Killian because they enjoyed getting him drunk and having their laughs at his expense.
"Killian, one more day, brother and we will be joining the Navy," Liam reminded him as Killian finished up his chores for the day.
"I know brother, I'm finished here, I just need to throw away the dirty water and we can leave."
Killian was about to reach for the bucket when Captain Silver kicked it.
Killian was ready to take a swing at the Captain, and the crew had gathered around to watch the show. Liam grabbed Killian's arm before he could make contact.
"Killian, please don't do this. Don't let him get to you. You are better than this."
Captain Silver laughed and mocked Killian. "Listen to your brother, boy, and soon you will be in the King's Navy. Be men of honor." The crew joined in as the Captain continued laughing.
Killian's lip pursed as he looked at his brother's pleading face and picked up the bucket and the rag to clean the spilled water on the deck. "I'll take care of this and I'll be here waiting for your return. Now go, brother."
"Killian, I will be back soon. I will go collect our wages and I'll return with the documents needed to enlist." Liam locked eyes with his brother in an attempt to ensure he could convince his brother to not let the crew torment him.
Killian watched his brother leave and he could feel all eyes on him as he went back to finish his task.
Captain Silver took out his flask from the pocket as he approached Killian and raised his hands up in surrender once the younger man saw the Captain getting closer. "How would you like a swig of my rum to celebrate your upcoming freedom?"
Killian raised his brow questioning his Captain's honesty.
"Killian we will soon be parting ways, and the crew and I would love to enjoy some libations with you. It is not often one of my crew joins the Royal Navy."
Killian threw the rag into the bucket and considered the offer. "I don't think it's a good idea. I don't drink."
"Ah, I see. Liam is not here to tell you what to do or not to do. Come have one drink to say goodbye to your old crew."
Killian finally accepted and joined the crew as they all gathered on deck to share some rum. Soon Killian was falling to the floor as he reached for the rum to take another sip.
Captain Silver quickly moved the bottle away and taunted Killian, swishing the amber liquid in the bottle. "Oh my, do you really think you have what it takes to be in the Royal Navy? You are nothing but an orphan. Why would the Navy want you? Your father didn't. To him, you weren't worth more than half a rowboat." The crew cheered the Captain on as Killian got on his knees trying to find balance and rise to his feet.
"What's going on here?" Liam asked, seeing his brother struggle to get on his feet. He approached and helped him up. "Brother, I have the papers here." He showed them to Killian.
"I'm afraid your brother enjoyed his drink a bit and gambled away his money. He'll be staying exactly where he is. But you can leave. Why do you insist on coddling him? He is only dead weight."
"He is my brother and I will never leave him behind." Liam folded the documents and grabbed Killian, walking him to their bunk.
After he left Killian, allowing him to sleep off the rum, he headed to the Captain's cabin and knocked when he arrived.
"Enter."
"Captain, I've come to make a deal with you."
"A deal? Is this about your worthless brother's extended stay?"
"My brother is not worthless, Sir. I have some information that may ease his debt. I heard that The Eye of the Storm is within the Southern Isles. The officers are on route to meet up with the Royal ship that recovered from the wreckage and was transporting the rare jewel. I know the name of that ship and I will provide it to you in exchange for our freedom."
"Interesting information you've come into. How do I know I can trust you?"
"I, unlike you, am a man of honor and my word is true." Liam stood tall in front of his longtime tormentor.
The other man stared at him incredulously and agreed. He knew Liam was a self-righteous man and his heart's desire was simple - freedom for him and his brother. The Eye of the Storm would fetch him a good bounty. It was worth more than keeping the Jones' brothers on board.
"You have a deal, Jones. I will expect your silence. You will not rat us out to the Crown or grow a conscience. Liam, what is the name of the ship?"
"The name of the ship is Poseidon's Trident."
"You should go fetch your brother and get off my ship. We are to set sail and be richly rewarded for our efforts."
"I will do so gladly." Liam left the Captain's cabin. He hated that he'd sold that information to his former Captain. Silver was ruthless, but his loyalty was with his brother.
He entered their bunk and woke a very drunk Killian. "Brother, wake up. We need to get off the ship; they are about to set sail and we still have to fill out the paperwork to join the Navy."
Killian slowly opened his eyes. "Liam, my head hurts."
"How much rum did you have, Killian? You know it's bad form to drink. I thought I had raised you better than that."
"Brother I'm sorry. I don't know it was so easy losing track. I swear brother I will never take a sip again," he swore with bloodshot eyes and wobbly steps.
"Alright, hurry up and we can finally go enlist." Killian and Liam gathered their possessions and finally parted ways with Captain Silver and his crew.
They walked to an Inn for lodging in silence. Liam was deep in thought, hoping his brother would never find out what cost they had paid to gain their freedom from the dastardly Captain Silver.
Killian felt shame for his part - for his weak behavior. He knew how Liam felt about drinking, especially considering their father's actions.
The following morning they enlisted in the Kings Navy and went through comprehensive training alongside thirty recruits. They had an advantage over them, having lived on a ship for half of their life.
After two years of training at the Royal Navy Academy, both the brothers Jones graduated at the top of their class.
Killian can still remember the moment his life went to hell. At Graduation, King Fergus had made a speech, saying he would change Killian's life and brother's.
It was simple. The King was looking for someone to Captain and expedition. Not one of his decorated Captains had volunteered. According to the whispers being told, the mission was a death sentence.
"Brother, I have volunteered for the special mission."
"Liam, are you daft? Didn't you hear the murmurs? No one wanted to undertake it because everyone who has gone has failed to return. Shipwrecks are all that is left," Killian pointed out, pacing back and forth.
"Killian, this could be good for us. The Admiral said if I succeed we could serve together and have the King's most prized ship, The Jewel of the Realm."
"Liam, I just want us to stay together. You are the only family I have left. I don't want to lose you because of some Royal's greed."
"You heard the King. He is looking for this Island because they have waters that can heal anything. We would be heroes."
Defeated, Killian agreed, "When do we leave?"
"Little brother, I'm going alone. You will be assigned to a different ship, The Siren Song for the time being. Once I return, you will be sent for and we can be together again."
"You are leaving alone? I thought this would make us heroes? Liam, I have a bad feeling. Please don't go. I think there is more to this."
"I'm going alone because that was the arrangement, and we will both be heroes because once we sail the Jewel, we will have his Majesty's favor. Killian, the King wouldn't lie to us. And don't let anyone hear you question him."
"I know you don't believe me brother, but I'm more perceptive than you give me credit for."
"Don't worry little brother, I will see you soon. I set sail tomorrow morning." Liam pulled Killian into a hug and clapped his back affectionately.

“I know you don’t believe me brother, but I’m more perceptive than you give me credit for.”
“Don’t worry little brother, I will see you soon. I set sail tomorrow morning.” Liam pulled Killian into a hug and clapped his back affectionately.
