Something I miss from earlier eras of the creative side of the internet was things just being unabashedly low-budget. Just all unashamedly amateur, unprofessional, ‘I don’t own a good camera but I have a story to tell you’, ‘I can’t afford a good mic but I have a song to sing for you,’ ‘I don’t have any kind of background in editing or lighting and I only just picked up this guitar last Tuesday but here’s an entire musical me and my friends wrote about our favourite book, we filmed it on a potato and put it up on YouTube in ten minute segments because we thought it was pretty funny.’
#everything felt so much less like Content then#and as someone who wants to share creative stuff online#it’s now incredibly daunting thinking about doing that bc#especially as a disabled person who can’t work full time#it feels almost impossible to extricate art from being Content#like there’s this immense pressure to produce things that could pass as professionally produced by a team of educated people#and to make smart decisions so that somehow eventually you can profit off your art#and instead of it being a ‘hey look at my silly little song’ it becomes#competing in an over saturated market already dominated by the nepotism afforded by wealth and connections#and it feels like it would very difficult not to measure my personal satisfaction with how a certain piece of art turned out#by how much attention it got online#even though I genuinely have zero desire to be famous and it sounds like a complete nightmare#anyway I’m gonna have ice cream for dinner how about you guys#hmp42

what's so interesting is that agatha and nicky clearly had their cons well-oiled, and at the end it seems they even started turning their song into a part of it as well, like i don't think that was the first time nicky sang that song for an audience and they used it to lure witches (i do think it's the first time that it /technically/ didn't work), and how after nicky died it continued to gain popularity and be so well-known it became a legend, and along with that agatha being known as the only survivor of the road and people (like billy) seeking her out to walk it or just for knowledge of it. and i think that had been the idea when they first started using it as a con. making it so they no longer had to travel and scavenge, using it as a lure to bring the witches to them in order to keep nicky alive, but only one small misstep and rio got him anyway
and then thinking about how lorna, who had a generational curse placed upon her family that is going to kill both her and her daughter and who desperately wants to see her daughter survive, heard this song and created her own version to use as a protection spell for her daughter and, like agatha did before her, she made her version so well-known and so popular that years and years after death it's still protecting her daughter, until ultimately her daughter was finally able to use it to break the curse and save herself
idk just.. they're like two sides of the same coin, or distorted mirrors of each other
agathas love was so powerful and so strong that death gave nicky time
lornas love was so powerful and so strong that the ballad gave alice time and even freed her
if nicky hadnt been taken that night, could it have eventually freed him as well? rio said agatha used the dark magic of the darkhold to hide herself from rio, so was that the end goal? they'd continue to lure witches to both keep nicky alive and to have agatha become powerful enough to forever keep them hidden?
#agatha all along#aaa spoilers#agatha harkness#nicholas scratch#alice wu gulliver#lorna wu#txt#me before the finale: and i'll save this song to use the lyrics to make gifsets of agatha x rio since i'll finally have more scenes to use#me after the finale: lorna/alice and agatha/nicholas parallels let's goooo#and there's something so poetic about how alice died too#like the song worked for her in ways it could never have worked for nicky#the song saved her like it never could nicky and like it was supposed to for nicky#and ultimately she dies the same as all the witches who had been drained to keep nicky living#do you think instead of just a loss of control agathas grief and bitterness chose to take from alice#because why should what was meant to save nicky save her instead?#i wonder if that moment when she watches it fizzle does she think of lorna?#does hearing nicky's voice allow her to see the similarities from a different perspective instead of through her grief#through her love of her son and connect it to lorna's love of her daughter? their struggle was the same for as much as it was different#idk it's just... agatha was planning to drain them from the start#why was /this/ one different. why did she have that look on her face after#especially after being confronted with her own mother who would have seen her die

Randomly thinking about “tolerate it” (narrator voice: it was not random) and how under the cloak of fiction it is ostensibly inspired by works like “Rebecca” (which Taylor said she read during the 2020 lockdowns I believe?), with the line of “you’re so much older and wiser” indicating that the speaker is significantly younger and inexperienced compared to the person she’s speaking to and a pretty direct reference to the plot of the book.
But I saw something somewhere once that stuck with me about how it might not be referring to relative age between the characters but chronological age as in the passage of time in a relationship. And that made me think about how in a contemporary context, it might not necessarily be referencing an actual age gap between the two characters, but rather a sarcastic or cynical response to the man’s claims that he has matured (“you’re so much older and wiser [than you were before/than you were when we met/etc.]”), which then made me think about that line in relation to the woman. And that it could be taken like, “you act like you’ve matured so much in our time together and like you know everything, while I’m supposedly still stuck as the girl I was when we first met.”
Which then made me think of the “right where you left me” of it all and did you ever hear about the girl who got frozen time went on for everyone else she won’t know it and the bit in Miss Americana where she talks about how celebrities get frozen at the age at which they got famous, and how she’s had to play catch up in a lot of ways not just in her emotional growth but kind of in general. (Which also made me wonder if she’s ever been called out for immaturity/lack of curiosity/lack of education about things in her life…)
Which then made me think about the rest of the song, and @taylortruther’s posts yesterday about “seven” and “Daylight” and the way Taylor idealizes her youth yet contrasts it with an almost sinister reality in its wake, and the line, “I sit by the door like I’m just a kid,” because the discussion raised that her relationship let her recapture some of the childlike joy and wonder she’d lost. So this line is a double-edged sword: the speaker sits by the door with childlike hope that the person will come home and cherish her, but on the darker side, feels like the child dealing with the monsters she doesn’t have names for yet and the feelings of isolation she felt as she aged.
I’m not saying the song is necessarily autobiographical; like most of the songs on folkmore, it’s clearly a fictionalized story based on media she’d consumed and created, but we know a lot of the fictional songs were infused with her own feelings and experiences and… This idea swirling in my head picked up steam and now I kind of can’t stop thinking about it. Sorry but I’m a little obsessed now.
Like maybe it might start to shed light on why she identified so strongly with the novel in the first place…
#the third eye has been opened#😵💫#like tolerate it was always a difficult song#even when we learned it was based on Rebecca it obviously took on new meaning post-joever#and especially in light of ttpd#but the thought spiral i went on last night when i started thinking about all these connections#and the evermore of it all#I’m Charlie at the conspiracy board again#writing letters addressed to the fire#me thinking too hard about Taylor lyrics#evermore my beloved#tolerate it#i kinda gave myself the ick with all this 😵💫#because of the ttpd of it all coming up#and i feel like i remember interviews where Taylor said joe was so well-read especially about like world events and politics and stuff#and supported her when she wanted to start speaking up (not getting into that)#but just based on ~vibes now I wonder if that was like a sore point too at some point#which again i have no proof of but just like… experience with pretentious millennial art bros lol#oh man oh man oh man#this feels like some sort of huge revelation at 1:00 am#when i started writing this lol#eta: when I queued this in the middle of the night i didn't see all the excellent discussion about the seven/folklore posts#so all of you who have been posting about them this morning consider yourselves tagged too!

I think dragon crews (especially on heavyweight dragons) should have their own working songs as well.
Call them sky shanties
#especially cuz like#sea shanties are rhythmical to help the crew work at the same time at the same speed#sky shanties could help the same way especially in connection with the rhythm of the dragon's wing beats#temeraire#his majesty's dragon#also maybe pern kinda because imo songs would help with training the dragons with their short memory#songs are easy to remember

(spoilers for the marella short story)
i think we need to actually consider the importance of canon marellinh, if that truly is what shannon meant to do (this does have to be taken with a grain of salt, since shannon is known for accidental queercoding.) after all these years of joking about the seemingly implied queer shit between the characters, to actually get something canonical? especially when a lot of us on tumblr are lgbtq+ in some way? it means so much and I genuinley cannot describe my feelings on it. to be in this fandom for years and all of a sudden have this? holy shit. even more insane when you consider a large part of the fandom is christian, many of whom are or have parents who are homophobic. this is a big move from shannon, and I genuinley cannot wait to see if it was intentional.
#this has actually renewed a bit of my faith in the next book#idk. im judt having many thoughts..#the main one being. is it real.#is this really what shannon was going for?#its like. on one hand shes known for this shit and it feels like a trap#but on the other hand. im not sure even she could have that "pretty and italicized perfect' line#without seeing this#especially when connecting it to a lack of serious love interests for both characters#and marellas line about linh in legacy when sophie asked if she liked keefe#just. a lot to take in.#kotlc#marellinh#marella redek#linh song#marella short story spoilers

I spent something like six and a half hours in the hospital today so day 6 of my challenge is being further postponed but, in the lieu of not doing any drawing, I did end up rereading Ovid's Metamorphoses in between waiting and I just wanted to offer some of my favourite underrated bits.
Cadmus and Harmonia's twin transformations into snakes is so gentle? Cadmus goes first, transformed mid plea for his wife to caress him one last time before his face is completely covered in scales, then he rests gently between her boobs and wraps around her neck and shoulders like a big snake gorget. Harmonia follows him shortly and the two snakes intertwine with each other before gently slithering off into the bushes and I love that actually mwah mwah mwah (I also appreciate the sweet irony of Cadmus who slew a snake for his glory becoming a snake, toothless and gentle in the last of his days)
Everything about Perseus was hilarious. Like, I'm sorry - I've never done a lot of reading into Perseus but I did always remember the banquet massacre and the Andromeda rescuing and like, bro I know it's not meant to be funny but Perseus is funny. I think it's his politeness honestly? He goes up to Atlas and is like "hello kind sir, may I please stay a night in your lands? I've travelled an awful long way and I am weary and hungry. If you only accept noble guests, rest assured, I am of noblest birth and have completed the noblest of deeds. 🥺" and Atlas takes one look at him, has a That's So Raven vision about the one time Themis gave him a prophecy about a son of Jove stealing his apples and then told Perseus to kick rocks. So Perseus, like the well adjusted and noble individual that he is, turns Atlas into a mountain with Medusa's head. This is how a great many of Perseus' stories unfold. It is actually hysterical.
I am going to give a special shoutout to Athis and Lycabas who were two young lovers in attendance at Perseus and Andromeda's blood wedding. Athis died first - a skilled archer who never got to shoot and was burnt and bludgeoned across the face with a wedding brazier. When Lycabas saw that his dear friend's beauty was ruined, he picked up the fight against Perseus himself in Athis' name and was slashed to strips by Perseus' sword. Lycabas managed to drag himself over to Athis in his last moments and died beside him, so I thought that was a particularly touching bit of beauty in the otherwise extremely tragic blood wedding.
No one can ever make me feel bad for Niobe. In a lot of the Greek accounts I've read and heard, because they tend to be much shorter or references in a wider narrative, it's hard to really grasp how insanely disrespectful she was to Leto (not that her boasting she should be the goddess of motherhood to the actual goddess of motherhood isn't worthy of death and destruction enough) but Ovid really did go the extra mile to dig it home how far down her throat this lady put her foot because even at her sons' seven way funeral she did not stop boasting about how she was still glorious. I did find it interesting that the seemingly innocuous detail of Apollo killing off the boys first and then Artemis killing the girls was kept cross-culturally, I assume it's because boys were more auspicious than girls in both cultures.
The detail of Athena bonking Arachne constantly with a wooden box and her being transformed into a spider because she begged to not be bonked to death. Also very interestingly, in Ovid's account, it's not a clear victory for Athena against Arachne - she gets flustered at the depictions of her relatives' affairs and rips the tapestry up - the judges didn't actually get a chance to opine. This is in contrast to the contest the Muses sang about where their representative Calliope unilaterally won against the daughters of Pierus.
The account of Apollo and Marsyas was much shorter than I remember it being. I recall it being touted as one of the more vicious and visceral tales in Metamorphoses' collection but it included neither the details of Marsyas' contest against Apollo, nor Apollo's feelings (or even any dialogue from him!) throughout his peeling of Marsyas' skin. Instead it is wholly focused on Marsyas - on describing the physical gore of his exposed veins and contracting muscles and the grief of the rustic crowd as they mourned his loss - which is curious indeed since the entire theme of the poems of Book 6 is divine punishment and it is otherwise filled with rather full accounts of these contests and insults.
Byblis and Caunus made me want to reread Euripedes' Hippolytus for the twelve thousandth time. Caunus made the right call of course but I also very much hoped he would have a huge big speech about incest being bad instead of just smacking the messenger.
And lastly, for now, Jove's speech as Hercules lay burning atop his death pyre where he addresses the host of his gods and goes "Man, wasn't Hercules a great guy? Look, there goes all his mortal attributes burning away in the fire, now he is all my son and surely we are all in agreement that any divine son of mine deserves a place on Olympus :)" was very endearing. I always feel quite bad for Deianira because she truly didn't mean any harm by her gift and I've always wished for an account of Heracles/Hercules' death from her perspective. There could scarcely be a thing more awful, especially given how long and drawn out and incredibly painful Hercules' death was.
Lowkey, I want to take a day and compare Ovid and Euripedes' Medeas. They're both very different women and they both handle their situations very differently. Partially for my own vindication - I adore Medea and Jason equally and since popular fiction cannot speak about Medea without flattening her or making Jason completely monstrous, this is just one of those things I'll have to do myself sometime.
#ginger rambles#greek mythology#technically this is roman mythology and I am sorry but I'm not gonna tag it as such :(#ovid's metamorphoses#see if I wasn't on two diff types of medication rn I would make a statement about the way a lot of the earlier chapters of Metamorphoses use#deific figures as subtle mirrors of roman political figures#and how that connects to the pictures he sketches of especially Jove's boisterous speeches or Apollo's tenderness with his male lovers but#comparative carelessness with his female ones but that requires more braincells than I currently have to expend#I got kind of derailed chatting about Minerva bonking Arachne but the contest between the Muses and the Pierids was actually really cool and#I recommend people read it - I especially like that Calliope's response to the sisters' callous song about how Olympus lost to the Titans#was to sing songs of the Demeter - the earth from which life springs - losing her daughter to a period of darkness and eventually#getting her back after great tribulations#of course to me it's a no contest - I greatly prefer the Homhym to Demeter but Calliope's song of Ceres and Proserpina#was more pleasant than I recall#or maybe it's just because I have Rex Warner's awful Men and Gods version of the tale emblazoned in my brain from Lower 6 literature lmfao#ovid

nothing like a book on aromanticism to realise it’s my platonic relationships where I feel like everyone exhausts me and I can’t be myself with anyone
#except. for a few notable occasions#one of which has domino effected into demiromantic and demisexual attraction#a few that have kind of bordered on romantic attraction#cause I can go without romance and sex. but I can’t do well without this#and I don’t know how to work on doing better like I know any relationships take work but my hearts been beating this way for way too long#yes just like the keith urban song#personal mental health tag#like I’m sure I can get out of this but the first step is knowing what it is#probably doesn’t help that my body chooses people to feel attracted to that have really Vibe that I might really connect with them and I do#them and their entire families often#but when I don’t get that I often can’t do much as let someone in. connection between "the poets are just kids who didn't make it" -> "I went to sleep a poet and I woke up a fraud" -> "I'll check in tomorrow if I don't wake up dead"
also a branch off there that ties Hand of God with TMOTM but that's actually a lyric comp I'm planning to make soon more than an actual note
#lftos essay#I'm just posting notes now. apparently. I'm trying to write out an outline rn skfnskngsk#EDIT the connection between hand of god and tmotm is the fraud/liar bit#hand of god is very eh whatever about it. hand to my heart gun to my head swear to God I'm through with this - I'm the worst liar I know#tmotm is CONCISE and DIRECT and SPECIFIC. I went to sleep a poet and I woke up a fraud#which. idk when tmotm was written exactly. patrick wanted it on the album proper instead of dark alley and champagne#but the song released in march 2006. I'm just saying that in a lot of ways hand of god feels like a draft almost#and MUCH of what it says both literally and thematically is transfered into tmotm#the contrast of the 2nd verse of hand of god vs the clarity and precision of ''went to sleep a poet and woke up a fraud'' ?#um.... hm. I won't conjecture#especially not on main. but....... I do have An Emotion about this ngl#ok that was just for my own notes ignore me. pencil in hand I'm just trying to make this work#moving on.

To my knowledge, Heart isn't depicted playing any instruments in CCCC, but if he did, he'd play the drums. The beating is very therapeutic to him.
Headcanon #125
#chonny jash#submission#cj heart#i thiiiink hes connected to the drums actually?#that mightve been a theory post/doc but im not quite sure#tho i do love the idea that he plays the drums#something something heart beat = drum beat ya know?#also he just seems like a drummer#ignoring the fact that CJ himself is a drummer. Heart feels like he'd be one#especially slowish low songs if that makes sense#kinda like slow jazz? idk im bad at describing music despite doing music lol

i think it would be very funny if jeremy and nato (who are cousins for the uninformed) hadnt seen each other since they were young and they meet up after they both transitioned (jeremy heere trans girl fight me you wont) and theyre immediately like "YOURE A GIRL/BOY NOW??" in sync.
#im rambling man but i think theyre silly#jeremy (who does not know nato is a boy now) listening to the black suits songs online and being like:#“wow my cousins band is so good :) its so weird how i never hear her sing though!”#and when they meet up theyre both just so shocked.#IN ADDITION TO THAT:#jeremy dating michael and nato dating brandon#“its so cool youre trans! anyways here is my boyfriend he wears a lot of red and has a strong connection to music”#they say it at the same time#and theyre very weirded out#i enjoy their dynamic so much#especially when theyre both trans#the black suits#be more chill
