478. 93 things about 1993, part 4
(part 3)
(source)
18. ValuJet flies for the first time (October 26)
ValuJet's first flight was from Atlanta to Tampa on October 26, 1993. By 1994, the planes with their silly mascot on them had made 15 emergency landings! 1 On June 8, 1995 one of their ancient planes had an engine fire on the tarmac in Atlanta.
We all know what happened to ValuJet just 2 1/2 years later.
19. Kenneth Junior French kills 4 because of "gays in the military". (August 7th)
He got four life terms + an extra 35 years tacked onto his sentence.
Newsweek, February 8, 1993
20. Socks Mania
People went absolutely feral over Bill Clinton's cat, Socks. There was merch:
Such as this Socks cat food container (eBay seller passalong)
This Socks watch that I still remember seeing at my local Kmart in 1996. Yes, the battery was dead. (eBay seller ha-340226)
This socks doll I also remember seeing at Kmart on a family vacation in Ohio that I desperately wanted. (eBay seller 13navybeans)
I don't have the date on it, but here is a clip of kids petting Socks at Christmas.
21. Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett get married (June)
When Roberts returned to the set of The Pelican Brief following her wedding, the cast and crew (including co-star Denzel Washington) threw her a party in which they all wore shirts that read: "Heâs A Lovely Boy ⊠But You Really Must Do Something About His Hair" on the back. 2
They only lasted til 1995, but they were cute together.
22. Base Closings (March)
Growing up, I thought this was the first time bases closed in the U.S., ever. No, a whole bunch closed just a couple of years prior!
(source)
23. Florida tourists killed
The state government ordered that all company logos be removed from rental cars, and it abolished special license tags for such vehicles. Rental car agencies now give customers detailed safety brochures in English, Spanish, German and other languages, and they play tape recordings with similar messages over the public address systems in their rental offices every five minutes. 3
There was even a bit in the SNL episode (hosted by Shannen Doherty) where Phil Hartman played Disney's Michael Eisner, alerting tourists that you'll won't get murdered in northern Florida where Disney is:
Hi, Iâm Michael Eisner, speaking to you from the Magic Kingdom here in Orlando. You know, for the last few months, Florida has been victim to a terrible tragedy: the horrific murder of nine foreign tourists in Southern Florida. We here in Northern Florida express our sympathies.. to the families of those murdered hundreds of miles away.. in Miami, the capitol of Southern Florida.
8 tourists were killed in 1993. 4
24. Miller Clear
Faced with lackluster sales, the Miller Brewing Company has ended its market test of Miller Clear, the brewing industry's first clear beer. "We're not manufacturing it any longer for the near term," Eric Kraus, a spokesman for the Milwaukee-based brewer, said on Tuesday. "We had a tremendous initial trial, but repeat business was not necessarily as good." The beer that has been made will be sold, but no more will be brewed, Mr. Kraus said. In April, Miller began test-marketing its clear beer in Richmond, Minneapolis and Austin, Tex. 4
(there's some more about it on Weird Universe)
25. Tonya Harding's dress pops (January)
Earlier this year, a snap on her costume broke at the United States championships. At the 1992 Olympic trials, her blades were mounted slightly out of position, leaving her stranded with a broken axel. Skate problems also delayed her arrival at the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville, France, where she finished a disappointing fourth. By 1993, fourth was the best she could do at the United States championships. 5

The Organic Island, which serves as the Monarch Empireâs traveling trade post, ventures across the land and is always ready to take in the newest seller. So when the unlikely duo of washed up con artists, Ivy, and third to the throne, Monarch Austin, find themselves stranded on the island without a marketable talent between them, they have no choice but to team up and undertake the islandâs most unwanted job in order to earn their keep: customer relations. Alongside them are the islandâs keepers Arther and Eric, who maintain the areaâs chaos; the local antiquities shop owner Sylvia, who is known for her eccentric finds; and the socialite Serena, who captivates the island with a flair of drama.
A project concept I've had floating in the brain for a while! One day I'll turn this into a series....

NEW YORK (AP) â A global technology outage caused by a faulty software update grounded flights, knocked media outlets offline, and disrupted hospitals, small businesses and government offices on Friday, highlighting the fragility of a digitized world dependent on just a handful of providers.
The trouble with the update issued by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike affected customers running Microsoft Windows. It was not the result of hacking or a cyberattack, according to CrowdStrike, which apologized and said a fix was on the way.
Businesses and governments experienced hours-long disruptions and scrambled to deal with the fallout.
Thousands of flights were canceled and tens of thousands were delayed around the world, leading to long lines at airports in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Airlines lost access to check-in and booking services in the heart of the summer travel season.
Several local TV stations in the U.S. were prevented from airing the news early Friday, and some state and local governments reported problems at courts, motor vehicles departments, unemployment agencies and other offices.
Affected hospitals had problems with appointment systems, forcing them to suspend patient visits and cancel some surgeries.
Alison Baulos said her 73-year-old fatherâs emergency heart surgery in Paducah, Kentucky was canceled Friday morning because of the tech outage, leaving her family scared and worried.
âSo if anything happens, it would be as a result of not having the surgery this morning,â Baulos said in an interview. She said her father was waiting at Baptist Hospital to find out what will happen next. A phone message left with the hospital was not immediately returned.
Elsewhere, people experienced minor inconveniences, including trouble ordering ahead at Starbucks, causing long lines to form at some of the coffee chainâs stores.
A disturbing reminder of vulnerability
Cyber expert James Bore said real harm would be caused. âAll of these systems are running the same software,â Bore said. âWeâve made all of these tools so widespread that when things inevitably go wrong â and they will, as weâve seen â they go wrong at a huge scale.â
The head of Germanyâs IT security agency, Claudia Plattner, said âwe canât expect a very quick solution.â A forecast for when exactly all systems will be up and running is difficult, but âit wonât be hours,â she added.
CrowdStrike said in a recording on its customer service line that the problem was related to âthe Falcon sensor,â referring to one of its products used to block online attacks. The company says it has 29,000 customers.
In an interview on NBCâs âToday Show,â CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz apologized, saying the company was âdeeply sorry for the impact that weâve caused to customers, to travelers, to anyone affected by this, including our companies.â
âWe know what the issue isâ and are working to remediate it, Kurtz said.
Shares of the company, which is based in Austin, Texas, fell nearly 10% on Friday. Microsoftâs stock price fell more than 3%.
Though the outageâs impact could be felt far and wide, the forecasting firm Capital Economics said it was likely to have little impact on the world economy.
Cybersecurity experts said those affected by the outage also needed to be wary of bad actors reaching out claiming they can help. âAttackers will definitely prey on organizations as a result of this,â said Gartner analyst Eric Grenier.
Air travel delayed everywhere
Most airlines attributed the problems to their booking systems. Thousands of flights were affected in the U.S. alone, though by late morning on the East Coast airlines said they were beginning to mitigate problems and resume some service.
Airlines and railways in the U.K. experienced long wait times. And airports across Europe suspended landings or halted takeoffs for several hours due to difficulties in checking in passengers.
Saskia Oettinghaus, a member of the German Olympic diving team, was among those stuck at the Berlin Airport.
âWe are on our way to Paris for the Olympic Games and now we are at a standstill here for the time being,â Oettinghaus said.
Other athletes and spectators traveling to Paris were delayed, as were their uniforms and accreditations, but Games organizers said disruptions were limited and didnât affect ticketing or the torch relay.
Broadcasters go dark, surgeries delayed, âblue screens of deathâ
In Australia, national news outlets â including public broadcaster ABC and Sky News Australia â were unable to broadcast on their TV and radio channels for hours. Some news anchors went on air online from dark offices, in front of computers showing blue error screens. Internet and phone providers were also affected.
In the U.S., KSHB-TV in Kansas City, Missouri, aired Scripps News instead of local news until about 5:35 a.m., the stations said on its website. IT teams and engineers worked through the night to resolve the glitch, the station said. Other local stations owned by Scripps reported similar problems, though Scripps spokesman Michael Perry said in an email early Friday that 90% of stations were able to air local news.
Hospitals in different countries also reported problems.
Britainâs National Health Service said the outage caused problems at most doctorsâ offices across England. NHS England said in a statement said the glitch was affecting the appointment and patient record system used across the public health system.
At Mass General Brigham, the largest health care system in Massachusetts, all scheduled non-urgent surgeries, procedures, and medical visits were canceled Friday because of the outage, according to a spokesperson. Emergency departments remained open.
Shipping was disrupted too.
A major container hub in the Baltic port of Gdansk, Poland said it was battling problems. And at the twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, marine terminals were affected, although the outage didnât cause significant disruptions.
âBasically, itâs been minimal impact overnight and weâre going to have to wait and see how these terminals come up over the next several hours,â said Phillip Sanfield, a spokesperson for the Port of Los Angeles.
In Manhattan, a criminal court proceeding for Harvey Weinstein, who is charged with rape, started 90 minutes late because of disruptions to computer systems.

FOOLISH LANDSCAPE by AUSTIN KELLAR
This colorfully bustling Featured Deck was created at BoardPusher.com by Austin Kellar. Austin filled us in on how this custom skateboard graphic came to be, âThis design is heavily inspired by the work of Peter Max as well as the 1960s art collective âThe Fool,â who created artwork for the Beatles, Eric Clapton, and many others. It was intended to be a cool way to intersect the hippie and psychedelic 60s culture with modern day skate culture since both are so unique, rebellious, and revolutionary.â Find Austinâs portfolio at thomaskellar.com and follow him on Instagram @austinkellar.

Where The Green Grass Grows
Chapter 1
Summary: Life changes, nothing ever stays the same. With most change comes with some degree of pain, thatâs how we grow.
Jensen thought he had his whole life planned out, written for him in the bright lights of Hollywood. One failed marriage later, and a lifetime of lessons learned, lead him home to a place he thought heâd left behind him when he was only a teenager.
He thought his life was over. He felt like heâd lost everything, but who knew one little trip to the local diner that had just opened up outside of town would turn his whole world upside down. All because he met you. Maybe a little slower pace of life isnât such a bad idea after allâŠ
Warnings: Â Language, Angst, mention of past OC character death, mention of grief, dealing with a divorce. Drinking. I think that's about it for this chapter.

âMr. Ackles! Good morning!â Alex, Jensen's longtime agent, said as he took his seat at the big oak desk in front of Jensen. Â
âAlex,â Jensen said, giving the man a tight smile as he watched him shuffle through the pile of paperwork on his desk. Jensen had been in the entertainment industry since he was a young boy in one sense or another. He was no idiot, and he knew the reason he was called into his agents office for the first time in almost 15 years wasnât a good thing, and he knew just what it was about.Â
âIâm glad you could come in to see us on such short notice, Mr. Ackles. Iâm sure youâre a busy man, and Iâm not going to take up much of your time.â
Alex folded his hands in front of him, and Jensen couldnât help but feel like the kid that had been sent to the principal's office for doing something stupid in class. The only difference was this time he wasnât a kid, and this wasnât a school. He was in his fucking forties, and this was his job. He hadnât even done anything wrong!Â
âIâm sure you already suspect the reason I called you here Jensen,â Alex said, dropping all formality that was there just a moment ago. âYour recent divorce has affected you, and I donât mean that in an offensive way!â Alex said as Jensen rolled his eyes. He knew thatâs what this was all about.Â
His divorce with Danneel had been a very public one. There were children involved, and of course a substantial amount of property. What divorce has ever gone smoothly or quietly in Hollywood? None that heâd ever seen, and they were overall civil for the public eye? So what was the problem?
âCut the shit, Alex!â Jensen said, barely holding his temper in check. He could feel his blood pressure rising in his seat. Why did people have to be so damn judgemental? âWhat the fuck is this really all about?âÂ
Alex took a deep breath, and set back in defeat against his dark leather chair, and looked at Jensen almost as if he pitied him, and damn if that didnât just suck worse than the wishy-washy shit.Â
âLook, Jensen, since your divorce you havenât been as on your game as you were. Youâre showing up late to set. You have been drinking more, I can tell it by the color of your fucking skin man. Youâre exhausted. No one expected you to jump back to work before the ink even dried on the divorce papers, and the company thinks it might be time to take a little break, get yourself back together, and figure shit out before you try and take on another roll.â
Alex fell quiet as Jensen set there with his hands buried in his hair, no longer looking at him. Alex did not want to do this to Jensen, he really didnât. It was the guys that were higher up than he was.Â
Sure they werenât exactly wrong, he could see it in the actorâs eyes how tired he was, and how much strain he was under. He didnât want another nervous breakdown under his belt like Charlie Sheen that had almost turned into an incurable disaster. Jensen had a stable following, and a break wasnât going to hurt his career. If nothing else it may help it.Â
âGo back to Texas for a while Jensen, get away from all this shit here in California, go have a damn beer out in the country for fucks sake. Focus on you! Gigs will still be here. You need to take care of yourself man.â
Jensen nodded slowly before finally looking up to meet Alexâs now concerned gaze.Â
Jensen knew deep down heâd been slipping, but he didnât think it was bad enough to warrant a forced vacation. If it really was that bad, he knew he needed to take a step back from the public eye until he could get his shit together before it did hurt his career. Heâd seen much bigger actors than him fall because of shit they did while going through tough shit like this, and he didnât work all his life to lose everything.Â
âOkay⊠Fine⊠Iâll go home for a while,â Jensen said, huffing in defeat, rubbing his hand along the beard that was now covering his jawline as he focused on a random spot on the building just outside the window. Completely done with this conversation.Â
Alex breathed a visible sigh of relief and flopped back into his chair. His eyes still on the man in front of him. He couldnât imagine what was going on in Jensenâs head right now, but whatever it was, he knew he wasnât in the sharing mood.Â
âIâll let the big guys upstairs know, take as long as you need,â Alex said, getting up from his desk and extending his hand for Jensen to shake. Jensen looked at it like it personally offended his mother, but shook it all the same. He didnât want to piss people off to the point heâd need to find a new agency to represent him, but man, did he want to tell everyone in this building to go fuck themselves.Â
It really didnât sink in that he was going home until Jensen sat down at his computer at home with a glass of bourbon in his hand, looking at plane tickets back to Dallas. He hadnât told his dad he was coming, and he knew his family would welcome him back with open arms, but it was his own mental struggle that kept him from hitting the pay now button on the screen.
Sure, Alex said that he could come back whenever he was ready, but the truth was he didnât know when or if ever heâd be ready again.Â
He felt like going back to Texas was admitting defeat. When heâd shown up in California all those years ago, heâd struggled his way into Hollywood. No one had given him an exactly warm welcome, and it didnât come without some damn near misses and shit that almost sent him back before his time.Â
Now, after all that. Several decadeâs worths of struggling, and clawing his way to where he was today, he was going home. It left more than a little bitter taste in his mouth, and there was nothing he could do about it.Â
The agency wasnât going to get him another job until he took a break, and sure he needed one, but he didnât want to take one. On the other hand, if he didnât take one, then heâd surely destroy his career because he was in no shape to be in the public eye.Â
There was no going back to Austin. He couldnât live in the same town as her, thatâs why heâd run off to California. If he was going back to Texas it was going to have to be Dallas. No matter how much he didnât want to.Â
It wasnât that he was afraid someone would make fun of him, or the locals would talk about him. He was loaded, and successful. He wasnât concerned about their opinions. It was his own pride he was struggling with, not theirs. He had lost his wife and children, now he was losing his career, and he just didnât feel like this shitshow could get any worse.Â
âWho says you canât go home,â Jensen said with a dark chuckle as he booked his ticket, and stared at the departure time. 5:00 A.M. tomorrow. That only gave him a few hours to pack, but then again, he wasnât sure he wanted to even take any of this shit with him.
âOrder up!â you hear James call from the other side of the counter where the kitchen was separated from the bar by a large whole that took up most of the inner wall, much like a lot of older dinner kitchens did in the â50s and â60s.Â
You throw the rag youâd been wiping the bar down with in the laundry hamper that was hidden safely under the counter from the view of the customers and grabbed the tray of burgers and fries, bringing them over to the young couple that was sitting at the very back of the restaurant. They were the only customers left in the place, and it was obviously their first date.
You could tell it in the way the girl nervously played with the hem of her dress, while the young man did all he could to hold a conversation with her. It was evident that in the light blush that covered her cheeks she had feelings for the boy, and judging by the way he was gushing over her, his feelings went pretty deep too.Â
âHere you go guys, if you need anything else Iâll just be right over there,â you tell them with a smile. They thanked you, and you returned to your place behind the counter. You sighed deeply as you started to count down the register that was used earlier that day. Once this young couple was done, then it was time to get out of here. You were more than ready to get these shoes off your feet and sink neck-deep in a bath as hot as you could stand it in order to relieve some of the day's tension that was still evident in your back and legs from standing on your feet all day.
As you counted down the money in front of you, your eyes kept drifting over to the young couple sitting at the back table. You remember when Eric had taken you on your first date. It was at a restaurant much like this one. Then the night before you got married, he brought you back to the place where it all started. He was deployed to Iraq for another tour just three weeks after your wedding and returned in a flag-draped casket a year later.
It was one of the hardest paths you ever had to walk in your life. You were young, had little to no family, and Eric was your world, your whole life, and it seemed like so suddenly it was ripped violently away from you.
You swallowed hard and tried to remember to continue to count the money, crewing on your lower lip in concentration.Â
It had been three years since Ericâs funeral, and you still hadnât moved on. Sure, there had been prospects. You were still young, only 30, and you were single in a relatively small town outside of the greater city of Dallas. So it was no secret that you were not with anyone. You knew you should find someone and try to settle down again, but you just didnât feel the same way Eric made you feel about anyone that had approached you so far. He was your first love. There was a whole there now, that you didnât think would ever mend.
Seeing that young couple that looked so happy and so in love brought up a whole lot of feelings that you wished like hell you could bury because they still hurt.Â
âHey you, stop staring at the customers,â Jessica said, leaning against the counter with a smirk on her face.Â
You give her your best bitch face and go back to putting the money bag in the safe under the counter. âIâm just making sure the customers donât need anything.â
âLiar,â she said simply. âYou know itâs been three years, Y/N.â
You looked up at her and sighed deeply as your eyes trained back to the young couple that were laughing together.Â
âI know Jessica. Iâve thought about it. No one just⊠I donât know, makes me feel the way Eric did.â
Jessica gave you a sympathetic look and threw her arm around your shoulder. She was working here with you when this place opened up right after you and Eric got married. She had been your friend ever since, and she was there with you through the grieving process, and she still kept a close eye on you all these years later.
âYou know Iâm only telling you this because I love you as a friend right?â she asked you, and you just stared at her. Afraid of what was about to come out of her mouth. It wouldnât be the first time sheâd tried to play matchmaker, and you didnât know if you could go through that again.
âThe reason you canât find someone is because you're still holding on to him, Y/N. You have to let him go, let him rest!â
Your hand slipped up to the small silver locket that you kept around your neck. Eric had given it to you right before he left for your last deployment, and you never took it off. You knew she was right. You were still acting like you were a married woman. If you were ever going to move on, you were going to have to let him go.
âI know youâre right, but I donât know how,â you tell her in earnest, as the young couple throws some money down on the table, and gathers up their coats to leave, waving at the two of you as they went.Â
âIâll tell you what, tonight after we finish up, weâre going to head down to the graveyard, and you're gonna tell him goodbye for real, and bury that locket, and let him go. Then I want you to move on!! You're so young, you deserve to be happy, Eric would want you to be happy.â
âI he would,â you tell her. Letting go of the breath you didnât know you were holding, and wiping the stray tear away that fell down your face before you nod and agree to go.
It wasnât as hard as you thought it would be, but after you got off work, Jessica got in her car and followed you to the graveyard. You did just like she said to do. You told him goodbye and took the Locket with a spoon youâd grabbed from the diner that they were going to throw away, and dug a small hole, burying the locket, and a part of your heart forever.Â
When you got home to your small house and got in the shower to wash away the day, deciding to forgo the bath because it was so late, and you were exhausted, you felt a little more at peace than you had in years. Even though there would always be a part of you that missed Eric. You hoped this time that you could let him go enough to finally move on.
You wanted what that couple had tonight, you wanted a friend and a companion. Maybe now you could start to let yourself be happy again. At least the weight that you had been carrying for three years felt just a little lighter, and you closed your eyes that night in hopes that tomorrow was going to be the start of a better way of life for you.
You never know, maybe Mr. Right will just walk right in the diner tomorrow. Then again, would you ever be that lucky?

He gives her a large clearance, but she doesnât really feel that much ill will towards him.
Platonic Connections:
Eric Lasiter (Classmate): Simone actually feels the most comfortable with Eric in class. He doesnât try to make much small talk and keeps everything focused on the discussion in class. She was surprised to see him studying with Ashley especially since it appears they know each other well.
Ashley Malone (Classmate): There is something about Ashley that she finds off putting. They often pick opposite sides when it comes to discussion which has led to heated conversations. Sheâs always been fine to her in class, but since they are both competitive and know theyâre the top students in the class, Simone doesnât see them being very close anytime.
Anya Grace (Classmate): Anya is her only normal classmate. She has no time for BS and is a hard worker. She can see that Anya cares about her degree and has to work just as hard as she does for it.
Austin Semler (Classmate): Sheâs not sure how she continues to be partnered with Austin. Heâs still very much into the gossip and drama surrounding college life that she just is not into. Itâs led to some awkward conversations and tense study sessions. She thinks a part of it is that he doesnât appear to have a real job, while sheâs working as many shifts as she can to pay for everything.
Tom Mills (Student): Tom has been coming to Simone for tutoring and extra help with his social work class. As a T.A. sheâs been letting him stay after class to get his work done and avoid any 2 AM emails from the undergrad.
Duke Thornton (Boss): Duke was the person she initially interviewed with. Heâs got a very good poker face, so she was surprised at the call back. Duke does most of the scheduling and is always flexible with hours when she needs to study or work later at the university.
Peter Knox (Boss): While Peter and Duke are both at Anonymous frequently, Peter is on the floor more often during the rush. Heâs willing to serve and bartend, anything to make sure the restaurant runs smoothly.
Josie de la Rosa (Friend): They met at Anonymous and quickly discovered that they both enjoy being active. Theyâve gone swimming and kickboxing together, and sheâs hoping to have a free night to join Josie at a salsa dancing class.
Selene Andris (Coworker): Selene is her favorite bartender to work with that isnât Duke or Peter. She has a good attitude and doesnât get stressed at large orders. She also understands a lot of the struggles that Selene is going through as a returning student and they vent about it to one another.
Matthew William-Jones (Coworker): Matthew usually buses tables, but heâs been asking her to teach him how to carry multiple plates and take orders. During slow times sheâll have him help her carry out her food and practice.
Juliette Willott (Friend): Simone met Juliette at Anonymous during a shift. Initially she thought she may have been flirting with her, but as they talked it turned out she was just being friendly and they had a lot in common. Her hanging out with Juliette caused one of the biggest fights between her and Isaac and was a partial cause of their break up.
Marni Frazier (Friend): Simone met Marnie while doing field work for her masters. She was volunteering at the same clinic and they clicked. Interestingly enough, they didnât realize theyâd met at Anonymous before. Now they regularly hang out on and off shift.
Garrett Cleirigh (Coworker): Sometimes Simone shows up to her shift and Garrettâs behind the bar. Heâs never actually on the schedule, and Peter and Duke just look resigned when they see him. He makes the drinks, however, so she hasnât questioned it.
Hostile Connections:
Hanna Moore (Uncomfortable): Sheâs asked some weird questions about her bosses, and Simone steers clear from her. Simoneâs worked enough jobs to know not to say anything that isnât common knowledge to a customer.
Chris Shaw (Dislikes): It seems like Chris is constantly hitting on a new girl and constantly striking out. And then he wants to complain to her. She wishes the guy would get laid and leave her alone.

Powers: AquakinesisÂ
Birthday: March 14th
Zodiac Sign: Pisces
Religion: Norse PaganismÂ
Mark: Unknown
Generation: Presumed 2nd GenerationÂ
â His Personality
Most of the time Fenrin is like the sea on a calm summer's day. That is to say that he is easy going, warm and friendly, spending most of his time just going with the flow. Heâll invite you to join him for coffee, even if youâve never met before, and then insist you stay for cake two hours later when you say you should leave. His relaxed nature can also put people at ease when theyâre around him. This often means he makes a good teacher and a good sailing partner. He doesnât rattle easy, managing to stay calm even in the stormiest of waters when out sailing as well as in life.Â
On the flip side he can be quite impulsive. One minute its calm waters, the next a torrent of activity. When he decides to do something he doesnât give it much thought, he just does it. But whatever he does he tries to do well; putting his all into every detail. This goes for people too. He lets people in easily and once heâs decided you're a friend you can expect him to be there for you whenever you need him for the rest of your life.Â
â His Personal Facts
Occupation: Boat Builder and Sailing InstructorÂ
Scars: One of his right foot, One on his left arm, A few small ones on his hands
Tattoos: Old, slightly faded ones across his chest, arms and back
Two Likes: Being Outdoors and Lingonberry JuiceÂ
Two Dislikes: Electronics and Fastfood
Two Fears: The Desert and Bleeding Out
Two Hobbies: Sailing and Wood CarvingÂ
Three Positive Traits: Relaxed, Hospitable, Loving
Three Negative Traits: Impulsive, Flippant, MeticulousÂ
â His Connections
Parent Names:
Gustaf Henriksson (Father/deceased): he doesnât remember much of his father as he was killed when Fenrin was still just a boy, but he does remember he was caring but strict with his children.Â
Aslaug Ivarsdotter (Mother/deceased): Fenrin has fond memories of his mother. She was a gentle and kind woman. His twin sister reminds him a lot of her, which is likely why she is still so clear in his memory.
Sibling Names:
Jonna Gustafsdotter (Twin sister): As is often the case with twins, Fenrin and Jonna have always been close. Where he can be changeable like the sea, she is constant like the earth. She has often stopped him from making impulsive and reckless decisions.
Ingrid Gustasdotter (Sister): Ingrid was always more independent than the rest of the family but they still share a close bond.Â
Children Names:
None
Romantic Connections:
Birgitta Olafsdotter (wife/deceased): She was a human he met in his youth and instantly fell in love with. Though she aged whilst he did not, he stayed with her. Their relationship changed over the years, becoming less romantic but he cared for her till the end of her life.Â
Platonic Connections:
Judson Cleirigh (Friend): Judson and Fenrin first met whilst surfing years ago. When they bumped into each other again in Chicago a friendship formed between them. Judson is currently using Fenrin as a lab rat for potions to help battle dehydration. Fenrin is happy to help, both as a favour for a friend and because he wouldnât mind having such a potion.Â
Raul Santiago (Friend): They met last summer at the mariner one sunny day. Fenrin was preparing his boat for a trip and Raul came over to ask him about it. They got chatting and easily became friends from there.Â
Simon Lee Weyden (Friendly): Simon has recently reached out to Fenrin with regards to his interest in genetics and is now trying to connect Fenrinâs mark to that of others from the Norse countries. Whilst it started as Fenrin simply being a research project in Simonâs training as a Mark Keeper, they have found they get along quite well.
Simone Campbell (Friendly): Fenrin met Simone a few months ago at Anonymous where she works. They clicked pretty quickly, especially after he mentioned his love of the water and she expressed her love of swimming. After a few chats they exchanged information and have started to become friends.
Arianna Torres (Student/Friend): Ari is one of Fenrinâs sailing students but one he has come to think of as more of a friend than a student. He always looks forward to their lessons.
Vladimir Draga (Good Friend): Vlad and Fenrin have known each other for many years. They met not long after Fenrin arrived in Chicago. At first their shared histories on the high seas drew them together but a more solid friendship has grown out of that over the years.Â
Ezra Scultz (Friendly): Fenrin met Ezra at a local woodworkers group one of his students had told him about. As one of the only other supernaturals in the group heâd made a point of introducing himself and found that they get along quite well.
Mason Harley (Friendly): As with Ezra, Fenrin met Mason at a local group for woodworkers. As one of the only other supernaturals in the group heâd made a point of introducing himself and found that they get along quite well.
Eric Lasiter (Friend): At first Eric and Fenrin met because of business. With Eric being a master of craftsmanship and Fenrin being a master boat builder, they teamed up to make an unsinkable boat for a client. Theyâve worked together since then and have formed a friendship through their time together.Â
Hostile Connections:
Harry Reeves (Cautious Of): A few years ago Harry electrocuted Fenrin. Heâs sure it was an accident but heâs been wary of him since.Â
Pets:
None but heâs considering getting a dog Â
â History Fenrin was born a few minutes after his twin sister, Jonna, in the northern reaches of Sweden. Both his parents were elemental witches - his mother a viking from Norway and his father a slightly younger witch native to Sweden. When they found she was pregnant they decided to travel back to his village to raise their children. Sadly Fenrin didnât have the chance to truly get to know his father as he died shortly after Fenrinâs younger sister, Ingrid, was born. Like Fenrin, he had the gift of aquakinesis and was prone to dehydration. It was in this weakened state he was caught unaware by a bear and killed.Â
Growing up in their village they were always viewed as a slightly odd family, likely because his mother still hung onto many of the ways she had known in her own youth. She still took them to the small local church when the preacher visited so that they werenât completely ostracised from their community but at home it was different. They werenât raised to belief in one God or the Bible but instead to worship Odin, Thor, Freya and the rest of the Norse gods. It is something that Fenrin has never stopped believing in. Once they were of age she also encouraged them to get tattoos as was the custom for her people. Over the years that followed Fenrin built up a collection that spanned his arms, chest and back. The ink has faded a little over the centuries but they are still clearly visible today.
Their village was on a vast lake and before he died Fenrinâs father had been a boatbuilder. As Fenrin grew older one of his father's friends, a human, offered to teach the young witch the same trade. Wanting to be closer to the memory of his father Fenrin accepted the offer and began his training that spring. When he wasnât working or getting some fundamental magic training from his mother, young Fenrin could be found at the lake or falling in love with a girl who lived on the other side of it. His mother warned him against falling for a human but he couldnât help it. A few months into his courting of Birgitta an old enemy caught up with his mother. She was a powerful witch but he was stronger and she didnât survive the fight. Fenrin would have likely killed the man himself if it werenât for someone else getting the before him. The three siblings were naturally heart broken, the loss pulling them even closer together. They decided to leave their home in search of a mentor that might take them on and when they left Fenrin asked Birgitta to marry him, and come with them. She said yes far more quickly than heâd expected.Â
They married under the midnight sun on Midsummer and left for the south a week later. It was their thinking theyâd have a better chance of finding others like themselves in one of the bigger cities. They were right. Fenrin and Jonna found a witch who was willing to take them both on and Ingrid found a warlock to mentor her too. The four of them, the three siblings and Fenrinâs wife, lived very happily for many decades but then things started to change. Fenrin had stopped ageing in his twenties but of course Birgitta, being human, had not. Eventually a decision was made. Jonna and Ingrid would stay with their mentors in the city whilst Fenrin and Birgitta went back to their village. By that time their relationship had changed. They still loved each other very much but it had shifted from something passionately romantic to something more platonic. Given that no one in their village knew what Fenrin was they decided to lie and say that Fenrin was in fact not himself but their son. They village brought the lie easily and they were able to stay there in peace until Birgitta passed on of old age.Â
Fenrin spent another year up in the north grieving her loss before he moved back to be with his sisters and resume his training. They stayed there a long time before deciding it was time to seek new mentors. At first they stayed in Sweden, moving even further south, then to Norway, then onto Scotland. It was after a while here that the three siblings went their separate ways for a time. Jonna headed south into Wales, whilst Ingrid chose to stay in Scotland. As for Fenrin, he took to the place that had been tugging at his soul since he was born - the sea. He sailed for a while on a merchant ship before bumping into a rather eccentric old warlock whilst in port. This particular warlock shared Fenrinâs abilities and spent their life permanently sailing the seven seas on their own boat. They offered for Fenrin to come with them and to mentor him whilst they sailed around the world. Fenrin stayed with them for a little over two centuries, with a few breaks in between to visit his sisters. Over those centuries he started to learn to truly master his abilities and collected a treasure chest worth of stories from the places heâd been and the things heâd done.Â
If he could have, he would have stayed with them longer but in the interest of learning more it eventually came time for him to find a new mentor. This meant returning to land but he made sure that he was still on the coast. Here he mentored with a witch his twin had started mentoring with a few years before. Though he missed being at sea he truly loved getting to spend time with his twin again. Once their training was declared complete at the age of 500 the twins travelled to stay with their sister for a time. Where she was though, was somewhere landlocked and eventually the river that ran through it just wasnât enough for Fenrin. So he decided to move on but not too far, somewhere he could still easily visit his sisters. He settled on Chicago. With no training to do he set himself up as a boat builder and after a while took up teaching sailing lessons too.Â
â The Present Fenrin is hoping that with time he can convince his sisters to settle in Chicago as he has but for now heâs just happy he can see them regularly. Heâs started to let himself really put down roots in the city. Along with setting up his business, heâs also joined a local woodworking group and has been rekindling old friendships, as well as developing new ones. Now that heâs feeling settled heâs starting to think about becoming a mentor himself and taking on a student or two. On a slightly smaller scale heâs also considering getting a dog.Â
At present Fenrin lives on his boat and he doesnât much see any reason to change that. Heâs managed to make it very comfortable and knows plenty of tricks for keeping it cosy through the cold winters.

Leon Russell Au Naturel
When Les Blankâs A Poem is a Naked Person, his long-suppressed feature about Leon Russell, was finally exhumed some years back, I wrote about the film for the Night Flight web site. The story has since been scoured from the web. The film is airing Monday on TCM at the ungodly hour of 7:15 a.m. PT, as part of its Labor Day music movie marathon, so I decided to dig up my old piece and re-post it to supply some back story. Itâs quite a picture, but it is not for the impatient or the squeamish. ********** Virtually unseen for more than 40 years, A Poem is a Naked Person, Les Blankâs portrait of Leon Russell, receives a formal Los Angeles premiere on July 8 with a screening at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel; a week of showings at Cinefamily, under the auspices of Allison and Tiffany Andersâ Donât Knock the Rock Festival, commences on July 10. The reason for the pictureâs long suppression is simple: Russell and his Shelter Records partner Denny Cordell commissioned Blank to make a promotional movie, and he gave them an art film, and not a flattering one at that. Therein lies a very interesting rub.
Some slightly convoluted back story is necessary. By 1972, when Blank was hired to create his portrait of the musician, guitarist-keyboardist-songwriter Russell had risen to a position of commercial eminence after years as one of L.A.âs top studio guns. Graduating from work in the house band of the weekly TV rock showcase Shindig! and record dates with such diverse clients as Phil Spector, the Byrds, and Herb Alpert, the Tulsa-born musician moved into the spotlight as musical director for Delaney and Bonnie Bramlettâs stomping R&B- and gospel-infused group and Joe Cockerâs huge, circus-like Mad Dogs & Englishmen unit.
Dubbed âThe Master of Time and Space,â Russell began a fruitful label partnership with British producer Cordell with the inauguration of Shelter in 1970, a year before a high-profile appearance in the house band at George Harrisonâs Concert For Bangla Desh. He bumped into the U.S. top 20 with his second solo album in 1971, but the 1972 LP Carney soared to No. 2 and spawned the No. 11 single âTight Rope,â which was animated by Russellâs rolling keyboard work and rough yet affecting singing. The three-LP concert collection Leon Live would reach the top 10 and cement his position as a solo star in 1973.
Russell and Cordell doubtlessly envisioned a conventional feature surveying the musicianâs stage show and sessions for a forthcoming country album when, on the recommendation of the American Film Institute, they commissioned Blank. By then active in Northern California for a dozen years, the director had made his rep with earthy short features about a pair of Texas musicians, bluesman Lightninâ Hopkins (The Blues According to Lightninâ Hopkins, 1968) and songster Mance Lipscomb (A Well Spent Life, 1971).
For nearly two years, Blank and his collaborator Maureen Gosling set up shop at Russellâs home and studio complex on a lake outside Tulsa, where they filmed the performer at work and play, and also cut their footage of Louisiana zydeco musicians Clifton Chenier and Boisec Ardoin into the pungent short films Hot Pepper and Dry Wood. The filmmakers humped their gear to gigs in Anaheim, New Orleans, and Austin, and to studio rehearsals at Bradleyâs Barn in Nashville for the album Hank Wilsonâs Back, the sincere and soulful 1973 country project that bewildered his core fans, essentially marking the end of Russellâs tenure as a top-flight rock attraction.
After an abortive attempt to screen A Poem is a Naked Person at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival â the print wasnât ready â Russell and Cordell basically put the feature on semi-permanent ice, allowing it to be screened only by permission, with Blank in attendance. It remained an elusive commodity until the directorâs death in 2013. At the urging of Blankâs son Harrod, Russell reconsidered the matter of its availability; a screening at this yearâs South By Southwest Film Festival prefaced a national theatrical release, and a DVD from the Criterion Collection, distributor Janus Filmsâ home video line, is anticipated.
Russell has long been mum about his reasons for keeping the picture out of circulation; queried in recent interviews, he has glibly replied, âI donât know,â or âI donât remember.â But it seems obvious that the producersâ intentions and the filmmakersâ execution were widely divergent. If Russell and Cordell thought they were going to get a puffy documentary that would push their product, they were sorely disappointed.
A Poem is a Naked Person bears a striking resemblance, in style if not entirely in content, to a pair of quite radical contemporaneous films. The most obvious analog is Cocksucker Blues, Swiss-born photographer and indie filmmaker Robert Frankâs notorious backstage look at the Rolling Stonesâ 1972 U.S. tour; a jumpy saturnalia of sexual escapades, heroin abuse, and hotel-room boredom, with occasional concert footage, it scandalized the band, who have enforced restrictions similar to those imposed on Blankâs movie upon its exhibition. Photographer William Egglestonâs long-gestating Stranded in Canton, which features pianist Jim Dickinson and musician/bank robber Jerry McGill among its cast of Memphis and New Orleans weirdoes and eccentrics, was shot on portable video equipment ca. 1973 and finally cut into something resembling finished form by Bluff City writer-documentarian Robert Gordon in 2005. Itâs an incandescent rebel depiction of life on the distant fringes of art and music.
Frankâs and Egglestonâs highly personalized, jaggedly edited, impressionistic features, brimming with often appalling extra-musical incident, donât fit the description of what weâve come to call âmusic documentaries,â and neither do Blankâs pictures. The best-known films the director made before his encounter with Russell, though they boast musicians (Hopkins and Lipscomb) as their central figures, likewise operate well beyond the parameters of conventional music docs. Though there is a good deal of music-making and ass-shaking in them, they are at heart about the communities in which the music was made, with their indigenous landscapes, customs, cuisines, and spiritual concerns. An observer of folklife at heart, Blank was an unlikely, even incongruous, candidate to make a movie about a rock star â essentially, an industrial film for music consumers.
Like the subjects of Blankâs earlier films, Russell is witnessed at home a good deal, and the director slathers his film with super-saturated images of local color shot in and around the musicianâs Oklahoma base â a pow-wow of the Tulsa Indian Club, a tractor pull, a holiday parade, a literal wild-goose chase, the implosion demolition of Tulsaâs ancient (and perfectly named) Bliss Hotel. But Russell â prematurely gray, long-haired and bearded, always bearing a glazed, slightly stoned mien -- appears before us as a man without a country, almost an alien, dislocated from his roots, ferried to his far-flung gigs in long limousines as black as hearses.
As a protagonist, Russell most resembles the central figure in a later Blank production, 1982âs Burden of Dreams. That unsettling feature follows the chaotic production of German director Werner Herzogâs film Fitzcarraldo in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon. The reckless and megalomaniacal filmmaker is seen slowly coming apart as, cut off entirely from civilization, he single-mindedly pursues his quixotic and extremely hazardous project, which entails the climactic hauling of a 20-ton boat up a steep incline; by the filmâs end, Herzog appears as mad as the lunatic hero of his saga, who longs to build an opera house for Enrico Caruso in the middle of the jungle. Though Russell is never depicted in extremis, as Herzog is, Blank implies that, unlike the Southern musicians the director depicts so affectionately and respectfully, the Oklahoman is like Herzog also a man who has drifted too far from his native shore.
Music plainly is what brings Russell alive; it is at the heart of A Poem is a Naked Person, and it is often splendid, a saving grace. There are lovely cameos by George Jones (playing âTake Meâ solo in Russellâs home studio) and Willie Nelson (essaying âGood Hearted Womanâ at a gig in Austin, and accompanying fiddler âSweetâ Mary Egan on âOrange Blossom Specialâ). Several truncated yet forceful performances by Russellâs road band â augmented by a gospel-styled quartet, Blackgrass, led by Rev. Patrick Henderson â are on view. In one simple yet eloquent sequence, Russellâs deeply felt cover of Hank Williamsâ âIâm So Lonesome I Could Cryâ plays under footage of clouds drifting across the face of the moon, as they do in Williamsâ lyrics; itâs obvious, but nonetheless affecting.
One of the bleaker streaks in the film can be found in some of the sequences shot during the sessions for Hank Wilsonâs Back in Nashville. These scenes are not totally bereft of a certain joy: Russell takes obvious delight in the expertise of his A-Team accompanists. One delicious scene finds him in an awed duet with Charlie McCoy, a secret hero of Bob Dylanâs Nashville-based albums from Blonde On Blonde to Self Portrait; the bespectacled McCoy looks like an accountant on his way to a tee time, and he plays and sings his ass off. But some of the other Music City studio gunslingersâ envy of and contempt for their contractor â like themselves a session guy, but one who has hit the jackpot â is scarcely concealed. Hotshot pianist David Briggs â whose obscene rendition of the Beatlesâ âLady Madonnaâ was expurgated in later prints of the film at Russellâs insistence â says at one juncture, in a blatant dig at his session boss, âIâm the guy they call when you canât do your own fucking piano work.â
There is also an ugly confrontation in the Nashville studio with folk singer-songwriter Eric Andersen, who was apparently barred from entering the facility for his own session by Russellâs security staff. Russell belittles and insults Andersen with an arrogant rockerâs noblesse oblige, drily telling him, âYou write some very beautiful goddamn songs,â which prompts the reply, âYouâre jiving.â For his part, Andersen voices skepticism about the legitimacy of Russellâs onstage thunder: âI couldnât tell if youâre a revivalist man, trying to put something over, where it was coming from.â You find yourself asking if Blank may not harbor the same doubt.
Blank ladles further darkness, grotesquerie, and bile over the proceedings throughout. Using non-linear, densely layering techniques pioneered in the â60s by French New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard â whose ironic quote, âThe day of the director is dead,â is seen on the filmâs concluding title card, below Blankâs credit â the filmmaker atomizes the action, or comments on it, using a vocabulary of startling jump cuts, head-spinning juxtapositions, and dialog rendered as on-screen legends (âGET THOSE GOD DAMN CAMERAS OFF USâ).
Thus, in one extraordinary sequence, footage of a wasted concertgoer being ejected from one of Russellâs gigs is intercut with shocking shots of a boa constrictor killing and devouring a baby chick. (The snake is the âpetâ of artist Jim Franklin, who is seen elsewhere adorning the bottom of Russellâs swimming pool, after coolly collecting scorpions off its walls.) In another scene, a snippet of fiddler Johnny Gimble improvising a lively solo in the studio is abruptly interrupted by the screaming freakout of a bare-chested young man on a very bad acid trip in an unidentified hotel room.
Blank seems to imply that for all the tambourine shaking and Chautauqua-tent fervor of his sound, Russell makes music that only mimes the spiritual core of its sources. Nowhere is this more apparent than in a ragged jump cut from minister-musician Henderson playing at a Pentecostal church service to his group Blackgrass rocking the praise at one of Russellâs shows. The first performance, Blank suggests, is about true religion of the most devout order â the real thing, as it were -- while the second is no more than entertainment.
In the end, Blank says without a flinch, this music is about the dollars. At one point he trains his camera on a teenage hitchhiker outside one of Russellâs shows; with a guitar slung on his back and a cardboard sign reading, âOklahoma Cityâ in his hand, the deluded kid says, âI wanna make it in Hollywood like Leon does â make a million dollars playinâ gee-tah.â The most damning exchange in the entire picture comes when an acquaintance poses a question to Russell after his performance at a friendâs wedding. Russell repeats the question â âIf I didnât get paid for singing, wouldnât I sing?â â and leaves it hanging in the air, unanswered.
One can easily understand why Russell and Cordell were mortified, even horrified, by Blankâs film and sat on it for four decades. A Poem is a Naked Person used the language of cinema to subvert the filmâs intended purpose as a self-glorifying sales tool. Instead, it ended up being a probing and dialectical work that used Russellâs music much as Godard himself employed the Rolling Stonesâ music (far less effectively or coherently) in his Sympathy For the Devil. As it often has over the course of time, great art â and Blankâs movie definitely qualifies as such â operates at cross-purposes to a patronâs wishes. Â

Law Office of Willie & Dasherâs Eric M. Willie likes to use video and audio recordings of spouse as an evidence for divorce and childhood cases. He notes the state and federal laws that go along with these pieces of evidence. He explains that one of the parties vying for their childâs custody need to know that they are being recorded. He stresses that the problem here may only arise when a spouse attempts to record a conversation between the spouse and the third party.
Pflugerville Launches Wikimap For Residents' Feedback
PFLUGERVILLE, TEXAS â City officials have launched an interactive wikimap enabling residents to provide feedback on areas of congestion, increased intermodal options, maintenance and safety recommendations, officials said Friday. "The first step in that process is to get a lot of people to tell us about their experiences traveling around town," Interim Public Works Director Chad Wood said in a prepared statement. "This is the public's chance to tell us directly where they want us to focus our attention and let us know of the areas you drive and travel through every day that may need extra attention when it comes to traffic flow and safety. By logging in to the wiki tool, residents can provide feedback electronically to the city. The city is also planning a series of open houses to get additional one-on-one feedback from residents." To fully provide great service to its residents, Pflugerville introduces the Wikimap app for the feedback of customers. The mobile app is specifically designed to enable Pflugerville residents to provide their feedback in terms of the increased intermodal options, safety recommendations, congestion, and maintenance. This interactive map comes with a quick introductory survey providing residents with direction. Itâs noted that the survey will stay online and live until June. Itâs also awesome as it allows residents to put different icons on the app or just draw different lines in a variety of colors for the necessity of turn lanes, traffic signals, stop signs, widenings, roadway connections, and any other roadway improvements.
Barton Springs Municipal Pool in Austin, TX
Have a fantastic dip in an underground spring-fed Barton Spring Pool located in the central part of Austin. Get the most of the 68 degrees Fahrenheit temperature of the pool throughout the year. Though a bit chilly when you enter into the pool, you will be refreshed with its laid-back environment of the park. Just be extra careful on the massive algae accumulating the walkways around the pool as well as at its bottom. Currently, its bathhouse is being revitalized along with the reconfiguration of its parking space to better serve its guests.
