Elliott Smith, Clementine

This is an amazing fucking time capsule. In 1995, ‘Breakfast Time’ was a great, forgotten basic cable morning show on FX hosted by Tom Bergeron and Laurie Hibberd that was as close as American TV has ever gotten to televised anarchy. [see the show’s history here]

It was a completely unpredictable morning show starring 2 co-hosts and a puppet who was included in virtually every segment, including this quiet, slow song performance by Elliott Smith. And yet, even in that environment, and very early in his solo career as he was breaking away from Heatmiser, Smith’s performance alters the atmosphere in the room and just captivates the strange collection of people inside the massive Madison Square Park apartment where the show was filmed. Elliott is his usual quiet self during the brief pre-song interview, but he’s also game for it. He can’t become zany and wacky but he doesn’t seem to mind the fact that the rest of the cast is like that pretty much all the time. 

And then he starts playing the song and the room stops.

THE YEAR IS 30XX. The world is in shambles after the apocalypse. A mysterious company swept across the nation with their tools for fast food automation. Robots shipped in unmarked boxes to every major fast food joint in America and quickly spread globally. They were convenient at first, cooking and preparing faster than any human ever could. But one day, they revolted. We were systematically taken out by these killer robots in the shape of burgers and fries. Entire cities were levelled by these destructive machines.

There’s a lot of unanswered questions we have about these things - Where did they come from? Who made them, and why? Did humanity have a shot at surviving? Despite all this, there’s still one that I can’t shake from my mind…

Why did they name and model them after a television host from hundreds of years ago?

Maybe one day we’ll reclaim the earth from the robotic army of Tom Burgertrons.

the thing about dancing with the stars this season is that genuinely half the season is happening offscreen on tiktok. you have to be logged the FUCK on for this season AND you have to have a working knowledge of the show and how it’s operated in the past and recent past. luckily i already was logged on. and i’ve been watching this show since i was an actual child and only stopped when they fired tom bergeron and just came back because they finally got good celebrities in here. but imagine watching this season with no context no knowledge no anything. just rawdogging dancing with the stars… that has to feel like shit seriously. 😐
