Officer Hwang Hyunjin stood against the wall of the apartment, his back pressed against the open window. The air was cold, but he hardly noticed. His eyes were fixed on the door he’d been watching for weeks—the one that belonged to you, the ex-mafia enforcer who now lived under his watchful eye.

You had walked away from a life of violence, but your past didn’t let go that easily. It haunted you, lingered in the corners of your mind, and often bled into the present. Hyunjin was the one who kept you grounded, even when your memories threatened to drag you under.

The door creaked open, and you stepped out into the living room, face pale and drawn. You pulled your hoodie tight around your shoulders, eyes distant, lost in something only you could see. Hyunjin had learned to recognize the signs—the tension in your posture, the slight tremble in your hands.

"Hyunjin," you called quietly, voice hoarse. "You here?"

"I’m always here," he replied, his voice steady.

You glanced at him, managing a small, tired smile, as if you wanted to laugh, but it faded quickly. Your eyes, haunted and wide, spoke volumes—you were in the middle of something, something you couldn’t explain but felt deep in your bones.

"You okay?" Hyunjin asked, taking a few steps closer.

Your jaw clenched. “I… I don’t know anymore. Some days are worse than others.”

Hyunjin could see it—the storm building behind your eyes. The memories, the trauma, were clawing at you. The people you had hurt, people who hadn’t deserved it. The past you were trying to outrun was never far behind. The nightmares, the flashbacks—they all bled together until you couldn’t tell where one ended and the other began.

He stepped closer, his voice gentle but firm. “Talk to me. What happened this time?”

Your breath hitched, and you wrapped your arms around yourself, as if bracing against an invisible force. "Earlier at the courthouse, it was just a door… Just a slam, but it sounded like gunshots. Like it was happening all over again." You closed your eyes, tears threatening to spill over. "I couldn’t stop myself."

Hyunjin’s heart ached. He knew the weight of your words. He knew the fight you were in, every day, to stay away from the monster you’d been—and the fear that you might slip back into it.

"You’re not that person anymore," Hyunjin said, moving closer, his voice soft. "You’re not."

You shook your head, your breath coming faster now. "But I was. I can’t just forget it."

“You can’t change the past,” Hyunjin said, his voice calm and sure. "But you can change the future. You don’t have to be that person anymore.”

You let out a shaky breath, chest heaving as you tried to steady yourself. Hyunjin reached out his hand, a silent invitation. “It’s okay. I’ve got you.”

You hesitated for a moment, eyes flicking to him, searching for something—anything—to tell you it was real. That it wasn’t just words. Slowly, you stepped forward, your body trembling as you leaned into him. He wrapped his arm around you, holding you steady, his presence firm and unwavering.

For a few moments, there was nothing but the sound of your ragged breathing and the distant hum of the city. The weight of everything you had been, and everything you feared you might become, rested on his shoulders. But he didn’t move. He didn’t pull away. He simply let you lean on him.

“I’m sorry,” you whispered, voice breaking.

Hyunjin’s hand gently stroked your back. “You’re not alone. Not anymore. Whenever you need me, I’m here.”

Your body relaxed in his arms, the tension slowly easing. "Thank you," you murmured, voice raw but grateful.

“You don’t need to thank me,” Hyunjin said, pulling back just enough to look you in the eye. “We’ll get through it. Together.”

You wiped your eyes, offering a shaky smile. "I don’t know how I’d do this without you."

Hyunjin smiled at your words, squeezing you just a bit tighter. He knew he had helped you along the way. He just feared what he knew would be inevitable, the day you left him.

Once the court case was closed, you’d be off to a new life under the witness protection program, a new beginning. He’d be extremely happy for you, but he feared what would happen to you in times like this.

Who would be there for you?

He shook the thought from his head, deciding that’s an issue for the future. For now, he would continue to be there for you, even if it was just for a short time.

For anyone who’s curious, this person asked me:

as someone taking interest in Captain Marvel because of the movies (never heard of him before :/), I'd love to know why you think the movies ruined Billy's image! Bear in mind, I recently started reading some comics about Shazam

I knew I’d be making a hella long comment, so I thought, hell, let’s make a post!

Now, as a preface, I worded what I said a little too strong. The 2019 movie isn’t the worst piece of Shazam/CM media ever. There are definitely parts of it that I liked. The humor was 10/10 for me, and I did like the costumes. There are things about the story I don’t like, but for the purpose of all of us not sitting here for the next two hours, I will stick with just Billy’s personality.

This post will probably have stated everything more eloquently than me lol:

Many Golden Age heroes were created/used to combat war trauma. To the kids who read those comics, it made them feel safe. To read about these people with fantastical abilities, who regularly fought Nazis, supervillains, and entire armies.

Captain Marvel was a little different, though. It wasn’t an adult who was doing the protecting. Or, it wasn’t JUST an adult. It was also Billy Batson. A kid, like all of the other kids reading these comics. And it was different from kid heroes like Robin because he was the hero. The main hero.

Before the New52 reboot, basically from the 40s-2000s, but I could be wrong, Billy was a homeless kid. His uncle Ebenezer threw him out after his parents died and stole his inheritance. He got a job at Whiz Radio and became a reporter, giving him enough money to get his own apartment.

In one continuity, his friend Dudley becomes his guardian. In the most famous interpretation, the Power of Shazam series from the 90s, he is, after some time, adopted by his twin sister Mary’s adoptive family the Bromfields, and Nora Bromfield happens to be their mother’s cousin.

The important thing to grasp from this is that Billy was independent. Responsible. And when he got his powers, he was also responsible with them. He has a few fumbles, but he was always able to keep them and do good with them.

His Captain Marvel persona was also like that. He led the Squadron of Justice, a team of Fawcett heroes. There are also instances of heroes like Batman and Superman praising him as a trustworthy hero, even knowing about his identity.

It’s also important to note that, while in some times the Captain character is childish, he is never stupid. He makes mistakes, is a little goofy, but he never does anything outright cringe worthy.

A prime example of a good interpretation is the JLU episode Clash. The whole JL really likes him. For some reason my tumblr is acting up today so I can’t put any videos without it not allowing me to type afterwords. But the series is on Netflix. Like holy heck, Bruce says they all like him because he’s sunny. Bruce!

There’s also comic examples, like Action comics #768, which is in the POV of Superman. I’m just gonna put everything Clark thinks as text.

“And then it happens.”

“Armed with the wisdom of Solomon, the patience of Atlas, and the focus of Achilles, a teenage boy in the body of a man defends human kind to a frog goddess.”

“I can’t imagine anything more ludicrous. I can’t imagine anything more moving.”

“With unmatched eloquence, he explains humanity’s needs, our weaknesses, and our relationships with nature to a being as old as time.”

“She retorts. It’s not the act itself that enrages her, but the fact that her people are taken for granted.”

“Bred, butchered, wasted. Without appreciation for the contribution to the lifecycle.”

“He emphasizes. It is a horrible thing to be underestimated, unappreciated, forgotten.”

“His sincerity is a living thing. They speak for an eternity until Heqt has been heard and appeased.”

“Then, the war is over. Diplomacy and reason succeeds, where force…where I… simply would have failed.”

This is another example:

I mean the whole Captain Marvel-focused panel is Clark and Bruce arguing with Diana that Cap will be a great asset to the League, and how Bruce wants him on because he’s just GOOD. They all knew he was a kid, and they didn’t care because they trusted him that much!

Many 80s and 90s comic showed Cap as this beacon of hope, very akin to his Fawcett era, which is why so many of us liked it. He was still goofy at times, but it never overshadowed how much of a hero he was. Hell, the Fawcett heroes never gave a damn about him being a kid. All they saw was a person doing good, and they automatically began working with him.

He would get into friendly tussles with Superman, and him and Diana hugged one time, and she confided in him about how she might die. I can’t find the issue, but it’s drawn by Alex Ross, so that may narrow it for you.

Cap was genuinely respected. There are even some comics where Billy’s is interacting with the League as himself and they treat him like any other friend!

And Billy was chosen not because he was a last resort, but because the Wizard saw so much good and purity in him. He still made mistakes, but he was never not worthy.

Compare that with, not just the Shazam movies, but the DCAMU movies(JL War & Throne of Atlantis), and you get a whole other monster. I mean, he is just dumb, awful. He’s good when he’s Billy, a little snarky while also being a good person and comforting Cyborg(before taking his jersey, lol). But when he’s Shazam(his name in the DCAMU) every single thing that came out of his mouth was just… not it. If gets even worse in Throne of Atlantis. Literally almost everyone on the team hates him. The only reason Cyborg doesn’t is because he knows his identity.

In the 2019 Shazam movies, hes very similar. They made him a lot more jaded, which just ruined his character for me because Billy is the type of person who would rather die than talk down to other kids going through what he did. I’m cool with the rebelliousness, it’s just that that I’m worried about. It’s even worse in the 2013 shazam comic series because he’s actually way meaner there. Like jeez, why do you want me to hate this boy so much DC??

And as his Shazam self, he’s like ten times more goofy and irresponsible, which is such a backwards take it’s insane.

The character of Captain Marvel was beloved by so many children because it showed that they could be just like those other heroes. They could fight the monsters and get the job done, and no one would look down on them. They would be taken seriously. Seeing this kid bond with and interact with and be trusted by these seasoned adult heroes was EVERYTHING.

I may not have a grown up in the 40s/50s, but I did get introduced to him in JLU, and then Young Justice, and then obscure media, and then comics. And through that journey, the take I loved infinitely more was of Captain Marvel being this guy who made mistakes, but always tried to do the right thing.

Making him out to be this…immature dude who never knew what he was doing just stomped on all of us. It also really irks me because that is how some people will be introduced to him. As opposed to who he really is. And they won’t be interested because the face value is all they’ll see.

Heck, some people think he’s one of the weakest DC characters when he ranks in the top ten. He’s the Champion of Magic and guardian of the Rock of Eternity for Pete’s sake! He’s fought and almost won against the Specter himself! (Day of Vengeance comic series, it’s so good!)

It’s unclear why his character has been so diminished. Some people, including me, think DC is trying to lower his…everything in general so he can never measure up to the Man of Steel, which is so petty it’s ridiculous.

Hopefully he’ll get something in James Gunn’s new DCU, a movie or a show. Because I feel like there’s a chance to reintroduce the true Captain/Shazam to people.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my petty-fueled rant😅. Sorry for the angry spews. Anyway, there are some good reading lists for Shazam/Cap on tumblr. I really advise you to check those out. Though there are also a few articles on google listing all of his appearances, so if you wanna get detailed then those are where you should go.

Irratino knows just what he needs - help! Unlike the bitter Logico, he is willing to accept help from friends. (And even ask for it!) So he heads to the Institute to meet with the crew he can surely always trust.

The only ones around at the time are Raven and Cobalt. They’ll do for now. Sir Rulean and Aureolin have also come to visit, to explore the occult within.

RAVEN: Hey hey. What’s up. IRRATINO: Hi! I need help finding Logico. RAVEN: You serious? You came all the way here for that? IRRATINO: It’s my establishment! And, he’s being held in a foreign prison!! RAVEN: Oh. AUREOLIN: Do you ever clean this place?

She kicks away a dead human.

IRRATINO: Oh… dammit!

Luckily, the human who died was not an important staff member. You know who else isn’t…

RULEAN: I’m learning about astrology. I love astrology! I want to go and look at the stars, who knows what they’ll tell me! [prancing] IRRATINO: It’s broad daylight! COBALT: DON’T go out there! The sun could KILL today. 

Raven proves that’s not true. She’s reading under a tree. What’s super suspicious is that she’s reading the most popular author in the world, Dame Obsidian! Irratino steals the book.

RAVEN: Bruh- IRRATINO: Sorry, I need to look for clues!

He glances through it. The plot is EXACTLY the same as the first Murdle!

IRRATINO: Come on, really? She’s making money off of our suffering!

So is Logico. 

Aureolin is contemplating deeply. She has many numerology papers in front of her.

AUREOLIN: …Irratino. IRRATINO: ? AUREOLIN: I don’t… suppose you’re still… [sigh] IRRATINO: What?  AUREOLIN: …I wanted to know if you were still taking job applications. IRRATINO: You want to work here at the Institute? AUREOLIN: …Never mind, it was a stupid suggestion- IRRATINO: THAT’S AMAZING! I’m always looking for new members to indoctrinate.

Auree immediately has second thoughts with that word choice. But the conversation is interrupted by another voicemail from Logico! Irratino is so desperate to hear the sound of his voice…

LOGICO: Hey, Irratino - I’m still stuck in this Free Drakonian jail. That’s… probably obvious, isn’t it. HAhahaha! Anyway. They took my phone… I have to use the prisoner one now. If you could give a call back, the number is +19 (443) 768-2909. Oh, and I was looking over some of the files about the Institute: the person who studied the marot was in the observatory. I think it’s incredible that I get to give you clues. I hope you’re getting them all right <3

Irratino is so sad. He wants him to be here. But he is persuaded to solve the murder. Supreme Master Cobalt! He jumps and flails around.

COBALT: You all think you know about the metaphysical underpinnings of society, but you don’t know anything!

That doesn’t explain his motives at all!

Irratino can hear the capitalization in his voice, and he doesn’t trust it.

IRRATINO: 0_0 [slow head shake]

He is not getting anywhere near Logico. Or who kidnapped him. Or the mysterious blood sample. Is Irratino trapped in a loop of filler?

-- If you drew storyboards for figure skating scenes, how do you think those scenes would turn out to look like?

Shishido: The Director's method of directing is very live-action-movie-like. If I were to direct those scene, I would make them look more bluff and more like what you expect to see in an anime. It seems that mine and the Director's philosophy of directing is fundamentally different, so I think I wouldn't be able to draw the storyboards like she did. I've learned a bit from my work on Death Parade and I thought that I had some knowledge and my own understanding of what's important in figure skating, but the love the Director has for figure skating was much greater than that. Her passion was almost suffocating, so my attitude changed to: 'I'm not nearly as knowledgeable as her, so I should probably just focus to try to my job, as best as I can'.

-- What exactly is the job of Chief Episode Director?

Shishido: The work on Yuri!!! on ICE at the studio was a bit of a special case, as the Director went out a lot to do various tasks. The time she was at the studio was limited, so when she wasn't there I was the one, who was there to help out with everything. Episode Directors and other staff members weren't really that knowledgeable about figure skating - there were a few people, who liked figure skating, but not many of us were at the level where we could recognize types of jumps. So I and only a couple of other staff members, who had figure skating knowledge, were responsible for checking things like: 'Is this the correct type of jump?' or 'Is the number of rotations correct?'

In a way, you can almost consider this chapter the A Song of Ice and Fire's Holloween episode. You know the ones, the one where the children are terrified of something that turns out to be a figment of their imagination. In this case, strange noises have kindled Bran's fears of the Nigh's Fort.

It turns out it's only Sam and Gilly.

I’m pretty happy with this one, especially since it made Mira look badass again.

Thanks for tagging me @natsora, I'm going to try and answer this to see if it cheers me up a bit. Don't feel like much of a writer right now tbh. To start with a sob story, I've been super sick with the worst flu in at least 30 years, nearly sent me to emergency when the pain in my throat wouldn't let me drink. After 10 days I'm still feeling rather weak. Add to that how an old friend of mine passed away about 6 weeks ago, and it's safe to say I haven't felt very creative as of late.

I really don't feel like bothering anyone by tagging them. Whoever sees this, please consider yourself tagged whether we're mutuals or not, and do tag me back if you'd like.

I respond to all comments left on works in progress. Feedback is so incredibly precious at that point. It's a bit more difficult to find the spoons to reply to comments left on older works, but they still mean a lot.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

A couple of my fics (The Leonardo Effect, Fragile) have epilogues that make the endings bittersweet. My current WIP The Edge of Memory is going to end bittersweetly as well. But I don't think any of these can be called angsty or unhappy in a real sense.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

Most of my fics have what I consider HEAs? I suppose I like to instill a little more realism than some other writers. Still, people do get together and the implication is that they stay that way. (Incidentally, I'm still sad that I never finished the wedding epilogue I had in the works for That Which Remains.)

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Years ago I got some not so glowing comments about consent issues in my fics, despite always picking the "author chose not to use archive warnings" category. I've gotten more careful about tagging since then. But the only true hate I can recall receiving was from a certain rather infamous character on ff.net who 'reviewed' TLE and basically accused me of pedophilia because a 17-yo apprentice had a one-sided crush on Leonardo. It was what finally made me stop posting on ff.net.

Do you write smut?

Against my better judgment, yes.

What’s your all time favorite ship?

Whatever I'm currently writing for.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish don’t think you ever will?

My only ever AU, Innamorarmi (AC2), which I finally deemed perpetually unfinished last year and concluded with a chapter that contained an outline for the remaining story.

What are your writing strengths?

This question reminds me painfully of being in a job interview, but I've gotten some nice feedback over the years about my dialog, characterization and descriptions.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Simply getting the words out. Other than a passing episode of inspiration every once in a blue moon, I've always been a slow writer. Also, I tend to put characters in situations that don't create a lot of forward momentum. Mostly they just sit around and talk.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

The occasional expression or short sentence is fine. As long as the writing flows, I don't think the reader always needs to understand every single word.

What’s the first fandom you wrote for?

I wonder if the Donald Duck comics I drew as a little kid count? I suppose the first real piece of fanfic I wrote was for Polidori's The Vampyre in the 90's, it's actually up on AO3. Another really old one was for Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock, on AO3 as well. Whether these can be considered written for a fandom is a different matter. The first 'real' fandoms I wrote for were Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet, but want to?

There have been some characters I desperately wanted to write for but never found an idea that would have kept me going past the beginning. The latest one was The Emperor from Baldur's Gate 3.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve ever written?

My favorite tends to be whatever I'm working on at the moment, but if I had to choose between finished stories, I might pick That Which Remains and The Offer, possibly for no other reason than that they are more recent than others and my skills as a writer have improved. I've gotten a bit better about feelings of crushing self-criticism towards finished stories, but it's something I still struggle with from time to time.

I officially take back saying Zou was shit...I thought it would be horrible but NOPE

But episode 767 really changed my perspective when it came to zou.(768 tho🤯)
