Captain’s log
Stardate 2024.03.18
Day 29
Including weekends, it has been over a month since we started homeschooling.  I do not regret it.  I’m healthier; my boys are healthier.  We’ve learned a lot and had fun doing it.  I finished reading another book this weekend: Entreleadership by Dave Ramsey.  I can’t say that I agree with him entirely, but I appreciate his candor and drive to be both successful and principled.
Our homeschooling friends get back at the end of the week.  I think everyone will be happier then.
Both boys are rather whiny this morning.  Simon is in his I-can’t-do-it-I’m-going-to-quit mode.  He’s doing art, and he’s frustrated because his project won’t stand up like it’s supposed to because the paper is too thin.  It irritates me because he doesn't want to fix it; he just wants it to work regardless of little things like physics. I told him to go take a break, then he argued with me about that.  It escalated to the point that I screamed, “GO TAKE A BREAK!” “Fine!  So annoying!”
Sigh.  I swear this kid was born a teenager.
Isaac’s computer is having VPN issues and keeps freezing on him. “The computer is stuck agaaaaaaain.”  I get it—it’s frustrating, but I can only take so many problems before my coffee kicks in.  He was much more agreeable when I suggested break time.
So here I am writing while the room is quiet.  I need to go fix the computer and get my coffee before break time is over.

Podcast Valley: 7 Podcasts to Help Grow Your Silicon Valley Business
Are you a fan of podcasts However, not everyone is. You might like reading. For those who listen to music, it could be music or bust. Whatever the genre of choice podcasts are gaining popularity.
This month, Spotify has paid nearly $500m for 2 podcasts that has led their CEO to the idea about 20% the listening on Spotify will be non-musical content in the near future.
As per Musicoomph the amount of active podcasts is greater than 700,000. that's up from 550,000 the year prior to. For Silicon Valley it is home to numerous podcasts devoted to the world of startups and technology. From interviews with unicorn CEOs and discussions about whether or not it's best to be kind to your smart Siri personal assistants (sorry for all the times I've cursed Siri.) The topics covered cover the entire spectrum of Silicon Valley alone.
What can you do to make use of this form of media to help improve your business or increase your reach to your company's mission? I've included some of my top picks below that can keep you in the know about of who, what's on the table and methods of the world's most extensive technology corridor.
youtube
1. Stanford Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders
"Who you are defines how you build." The Stanford eCorner motto provides the basis of the entrepreneur-focused Thought Leadership podcast. Each week throughout the academic year The Thought Leaders speaker series offers podcasts of each lecture, with thought leaders and entrepreneurs of Silicon Valley and beyond.
They share lessons learned and imparted to others in "developing, launching, and scaling disruptive ideas." A few of the questions include "what have you been working on?" "what does the history of your company look like?" "how did you take your initial idea and turn adopters into customers?" And "how do you gain traction in Silicon Valley?" Interviews from the most recent series of "The Silicon Valley Show" include executives from Google, Harvard Business School, 23andMe, Microsoft, MobileIron and many numerous others.
2. EntreLeadership
produced by Ken Coleman, EntreLeadership is an bi-weekly podcast which provides information, classes, interviews, and other aspects that aid in the growth of "you and your business".
Each episode will feature one particular lesson about advancement and includes topics such as "Are you in the right place for growth?" "3 ways to engage your team" and "4 steps to avoid hiring mistakes." Consider EntreLeadership as a self-help for the enterprise podcast with the added aspect of renowned guest speakers like Mark Cuban, Seth Godin and Daymond John. The podcast provides more than just advice about how to expand your company however, it also offers strategies to help you create the most effective possible, most productive and efficient environment for business.
3. Why'd You Push That Button?
Converge is a audio podcast that was created by The Verge as well as hosted by The Verge's Ashley Carman and Vox.com's Kaitlyn Tiffany. This podcast might be my favorite as it ponders the ways that technology has forced us to make strange, difficult and confusing choices. Think of Black Mirror, but in an easier, less scary and more realistic manner.
Each episode focuses on an issue, as well as guests who have questions and stories connected to the topic. The hosts are young, humorous and entertaining. The podcast may appear as a conversation between your friends. It's millennia driven, so if you're looking to establish a brand that appeals to younger generations in an uncluttered and progressive style you should give this a shot.
My absolute favorite episode has been "What can make a location Instagram-worthy? "
4. Exponent
I'm currently listening the show today on Exponent "Game of Phones," with hosts Ben Thompson and James Allworth discuss the WWDC keynote and explain why it was so crucial to Apple to get past their previous flagship device, the iPhone. These episodes typically cover recent announcements in the field of technology, with recent episodes talking about WWDC along with Slack's IPO, Disney+, and the US-China trade war.
What are these announcements implying for the tech universe? What do they mean for the average person? The businesses themselves? This is an issue that Exponent hopes to answer.
5. Valley Talks
Valley Talks has, sometimes the simplest episode of every show in this listing. The episodes range from 12 to 45 minutes. Each episode of Valley Talks aim to provide all the essential information necessary to build a Silicon Valley brand. Each season is devoted to a specific aspect of Silicon Valley startup life, the current season is specifically focused on branding and marketing for startups. The entire season is packed with segments on influencer marketing, pitching your company to journalists and the best way to utilize your brand's potential to its fullest.
6. Tech Crunch: Equity
Equity is the TechCrunch's podcast devoted to venture capital. It is hosted by Connie Loizos, Silicon Valley Editor at TechCrunch as well as Alex Wilhelm, Editor-in-Chief of Crunchbase News, Equity examines everything related to M&A as well as the most recent rounds of funding and Silicon Valley investing.
The podcast certainly goes deep in the VC sector, and could be super helpful for people at companies like PAN with clients nearing IPO and seeking new capital. Even if you're not even yet a step away from launching an exit strategy. It's vital to be aware of what the general consensus is on information like Uber's less-than optimal IPO the way VC's perceive cannabis as a business, and how a business can decide between M&A and IPO.
As a fervent Pros/Cons list creator, I don't find any cons in making use of podcasts today. In fact, as Craig T. Nelson said in the episode of Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert, podcasts are freeform radio. They host a wide range of people and cover a variety of topics My favorite podcast can be Ear Hustle. It's about the prison life in San Quentin prison, so it's apparent that there's the perfect podcast to everyone. The 6 mentioned above are such a small part of the totality, however they're the ones that offer valuable suggestions and provide interesting queries about the technology world that which we've given so much of our time to.
7. Silicon Valley Tech Talks
Silicon Valley Tech Talks is an Silicon Valley podcast platform dedicated to democratizing knowledge about innovation and technology particularly for young graduates and professionals. Founded by Faisal Wattoo, who has more than 20 years of working in the tech industry, including leadership positions at companies such as Qualcomm, Amazon, and Meta Platforms, the platform has a variety of engaging tech podcasts featuring industry leaders and innovative individuals.
The platform covers a wide spectrum of subjects, such as artificial intelligence cloud computing fintech healthcare and biotech as well as leadership best practices, semiconductors and hardware including wireless and connectivity, as well as different digital technology. These podcasts provide listeners with direct insights into the most recent advancements and trends in technology.
In addition, to lengthy-form radio shows, Silicon Valley Tech Talks gives short clips and targeted information, along with highlights from tech-related conferences, such as Open Silicon Valley 2023. It functions as a resource to connect tech enthusiasts and experts that help them gain a better understanding about the technological landscape.
For more information or to explore their content, you can visit their official website at siliconvalleytechtalks.com or their YouTube channel at Silicon Valley Tech Talks - YouTube.

Running a small business is both exhilarating and challenging. Whether you're just starting or looking to refine your strategy, books can be a treasure trove of wisdom. The best books for running a small business don’t just provide strategies; they offer stories, frameworks, and tools to help you navigate the entrepreneurial landscape. Here’s a curated list of must-read books that cover everything from leadership and finance to marketing and innovation.
Tumblr media
The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber Why It’s a Must-Read: Gerber tackles one of the biggest myths in entrepreneurship: that technical skill automatically translates to business success. This book guides you on how to work on your business, not just in it. Key Takeaway: Create systems and processes that allow your business to run smoothly without relying solely on you.
Profit First by Mike Michalowicz Why It’s a Game-Changer: Managing finances is a common challenge for small business owners. Michalowicz presents a simple yet revolutionary way to prioritize profit, ensuring your business remains financially healthy. Key Takeaway: Allocate profits before expenses to ensure your business is always in the green.
Good to Great by Jim Collins Why It’s Essential: This classic delves into what separates good companies from great ones. Though it’s often geared toward larger businesses, the principles can be adapted for small enterprises. Key Takeaway: Focus on disciplined people, thought, and action to create sustained success.
Start with Why by Simon Sinek Why It Resonates: Understanding your "why" is crucial for driving both personal motivation and team alignment. Sinek’s insights are invaluable for small business owners looking to build a purpose-driven brand. Key Takeaway: People buy why you do what you do, not just what you sell.
The Lean Startup by Eric Ries Why Entrepreneurs Love It: If you're launching a business or a new product, this book introduces the concept of building and iterating quickly. It emphasizes experimentation over elaborate planning. Key Takeaway: Test your ideas quickly and pivot based on feedback to avoid costly mistakes.
Atomic Habits by James Clear Why It’s Powerful: Success in business often hinges on small, consistent habits. This book provides actionable strategies to help you and your team build habits that compound into big results. Key Takeaway: Focus on incremental improvements to create significant change over time.
Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim & Renée Mauborgne Why It’s Revolutionary: Learn how to create uncontested market space and make competition irrelevant. This book is perfect for small business owners aiming to innovate and differentiate. Key Takeaway: Shift your focus from competing in crowded markets to creating new opportunities.
EntreLeadership by Dave Ramsey Why It’s Valuable: This book combines entrepreneurship with leadership, providing practical advice for managing teams and building a thriving culture. Key Takeaway: Strong leadership is the foundation of a successful small business.
Shoe Dog by Phil Knight Why It’s Inspiring: Phil Knight’s memoir chronicles the creation of Nike, offering insights into the grit, setbacks, and breakthroughs of building a global brand. Key Takeaway: Persistence and adaptability are key to overcoming entrepreneurial challenges.
Crushing It! by Gary Vaynerchuk Why It’s Relatable: Vaynerchuk shows how small business owners can harness the power of personal branding and social media to grow their ventures. Key Takeaway: Authenticity and storytelling can set your business apart in the digital age.

Final Thoughts Books are a powerful tool for personal and professional growth. The best books for running a small business equip you with strategies, inspiration, and practical tools. Thrive in All Weather—Think Like A Sailboat Captain
Thrive in All Weather—Think Like A Sailboat Captain
(HT to Seth Godin and the “EntreLeadership” Podcast) If you’re piloting a sailboat, you don’t care in which direction the wind blows. All that matters is that the wind is blowing. If you have wind, you can adjust your sails and steer the boat in the direction you wish to go. Only when there’s no wind are you actually stuck. If we adopt this same thinking in our work and personal lives, we’ll…

When It’s Time To Let Them Go
When It’s Time To Let Them Go
I believe a company shouldn’t have employees, they should have teammates. I also believe that leadership should invest time, money, and energy into their team. I believe leadership should focus on helping each team member see their value to the company or organization. I believe a successful company has a team that works toward common goals and is passionate about said goals. However, what…

Captain’s Log
Stardate 2024.03.06
Day 21
It’s a soggy day.  The humidity is 64% which means hanging clothes to dry is mission impossible.  I’m feeling somewhat scattered this morning, and the boys are as well.  Simon just said, “I’m sick of just looking at the screen.  I want to write something on paper or look at the board.”
I understand the complaint, but I’m not sure what to do about it.  I know that whenever I try to “teach” my children anything, it becomes a game to see who can exhaust my patience faster.  Aside from photography, lessons with daddy quickly catch fire and enter a tailspin of bad feelings for everyone.  Maybe we will try the art museum this afternoon and see how that goes.
No leads on my future direction and no photo sales yet, even at the discounted price.  Not sure if that means people don’t need art as much as they need a Big Mac or if I am just not good at marketing.  I’m trying to appeal to people’s desire to support something uplifting on social media, but it seems like that is not an effective motivator.  Hard to compete with videos of buxom young women testing the physics of amusement park rides.  Sigh.
I’m reading Entreleadership at the moment, and I love Dave Ramsey’s idea of a momentum theorem. His idea is that Focused integrity over Time, multiplied by God equals unstoppable Momentum.  I hope he’s right because I’m pushing, but right now my business is displaying inertia more than anything.

Good evening! Hope you’ve had a wonderful day! What do you like to do to wind down and relax? I love reading books! Right now I’m reading #retireinspired by @chrishogan360 and also #entreleadership by @daveramsey I also love reading fantasy books, like the inheritance series and the Lord of the rings. Always fun to exercise the imagination when relaxing. So what do you do to relax? What do you do to wind down? Read? Watch movies? Go on a walk? Have a bonfire? We all need to make sure to take time for ourselves to rest and relax and clear our mind. Be sure to set time aside to do this every week, if not every day. You need to take care of yourself to be able to take care of other people. You are awesome! God knows it, and so should you! . . . . . . . . . #tranquilitytuesday #affirmationscoffee #rest #relax #clearyourmind #clearyourhead #takecareofyourself #books #bookshelf #selflove #selfcare #entrepreneur #startup #smallbusiness #affirmations #affirmation #dailyaffirmations #dailyaffirmation #lifecoach #financialcoach #pashfam #passionplanner #author #writer #blog #blogger https://www.instagram.com/p/CEVMj1RJ5G0/?igshid=1588pk2icwpz4
