You try to believe it.

(An old woman puts a rosary in your hands. You accept it without question.)

You are a guest in a castle you have never been in before (you recognize every hallway and know without trying that every door is locked). Your host is a man you have never met before (you killed him you killed him you killed him he had turned to dust and there was blood on the snow).

One morning you cut yourself while shaving.

There is nobody behind you in the pocket mirror’s reflection.

you could feel him slipping away. he no longer looked at you with the same love in his gaze, or the way he would laugh at your jokes.

he just turned…cold.

everyday, you felt your heart break more and more.

the jake that once loved you and the jake you once loved was gone. now, there was some cold, distant person who was most definitely not your boyfriend.

every time you tried to talk with him, he would respond with a small nod and if you were lucky, you would get one word.

“jaeyun? what do you want for dinner?” you had asked one evening. jake didn’t even respond or look you in the eye. he never did anymore.

instead, you only got a shrug.

“hey babe? come look at these photos of layla i took!” jake smiled, his puppy smile really showing.

you missed the way he would get excited over small things or just smile.

his smile.

that’s what you missed so much.

but whenever you asked him if he was okay, he would shrug you off, going back to his video game.

were you that much a burden? when you started dating jake, he promised that he would never break you heart.

“it’s not our fate,” he said cheekily, a goofy smile adorning his face.

and you were a fool to believe him at the time, too blinded by what you thought would be an everlasting love.

as you lay in bed, you realized that he was gone. it wasn’t something you wanted to accept, but you had to.

he was gone and there was nothing you could to fix it.

before you knew it, heavy tears were rolling down your face—the salty tears collecting onto your pillow case.

you cried yourself to sleep that night.

so the next morning, you packed up a small amount of stuff into a bag, just needing to get out of the same space as him.

“baby? where are you going?” oh so now he cared.

you didn’t even spare him a glance and slipped on your shoes, annoyed that he only cared once you were halfway out the door.

“away. away from you,” you said, afraid that if you said more, your shaky voice would give your tears away.

“w-what? w-why?” for the first time, jake actually looked up at you. his expression shocked and his eyes brows scrunched together.

“why? jesus jake! have you ever noticed how awful you’ve been treating me lately? all i get is a nod or a shrug! i’m lucky if you even look at me!” you cry, letting the tears fall. “i-i just need time. away from you.” you whisper, not knowing if that was gonna be the full truth.

“fuck, baby i-”

“don’t call me that! i know that you don’t mean it cause if you really did, i wouldn’t be here, halfway out the fucking door!” you shouted, your vision now blurred from the tears.

jake looked like he was about to defend himself but then shut his mouth, knowing that you were right.

you opened the door, adjusting the bag on your shoulder and stepping out.

“goodbye sim jaeyun. call me when you realize how much you fucked up.” and with that, you walked out, your heart in so many pieces.

hundreds of broken pieces of your heart, scattered around you.

your heart was left broken, the fate of so many others.

after reading this post by @randomfoggytiger and a whole mess of @carefulfears words forever rattling around my brain — i just need to talk about unruhe.

i tweeted a simple thought, that isn't really so simple at all. unruhe, to me, is about scully learning a lesson mulder intrinsically knows.

i think scully lays it out in her final voiceover as she writes her report after being kidnapped and nearly lobotomized. she spent her time with gerry trying to keep him talking. she has to take the time to understand this man to have a chance of escaping with all her faculties. scully asks him about his sister and his father, who mulder had questioned him about earlier. as mulder was putting together a profile, he said the man was either really tall or wanted to be — and this little piece of information let scully connect the dots that she was speaking to their suspect. gerry, on stilts. (in the interrogation, scully is angry & forceful — as a doctor and as a woman. mulder is more curious.)

so in her report, she's recording her musings about her experience. and it's something she dismissed earlier:

(unrelated to this post, but this scene always reminds me of their final scene in leonard betts. the disconnect between them, mulder's confusion but acquiescence.)

scully's voiceover:

in the end, scully knows that understanding gerry saved her life. it gave her the time so mulder could get there and intervene. and not just understand, but empathize. something mulder is able to do with just about everyone. even the worst criminals. in beyond the sea, it makes him stubbornly disbelieve boggs. here, mulder ends up shooting & killing gerry. he understood gerry believed he was helping these women, because he couldn't accept what happened to his sister. mulder doesn't over-identify this time. but i think scully's intimate insight into mulder allowed her to look into gerry. (edit: and i don't really mean samantha, though it's part of it. mainly mean the way his mind works. she hates gerry but she tucked away everything mulder said about him & his analysis.)

one of my favorite things about scully is the way she values mulder's mind & empathy. something i think she believes she isn't capable of. she tends to talk about relying on his strength, but she also depends on his empathy so much. when she was in this situation, that's what she drew on. scully rarely has empathy for men committing violent crimes against women. she knows the world is full of predators, as she once told karen kosseff in irresistible. it's a comfort to her to have a hand in bringing these men to justice.

after mulder kills gerry & releases her, scully takes one moment to look back at him before leaving. after this near death incident, scully takes the time to read gerry's diary. like she wants to understand him more. "for truly to pursue monsters, we must understand them. we must venture into their minds." lesson learned, and new fear unlocked: "only in doing so, do we risk letting them venture into ours?"

i actually think this was a silent fear lurking in irresistible. scully's horror at the case was layered. yes, it was the violence against women & the haunting of her own abduction, but also that donnie pfaster would kill women to "scavenge from the dead." she's a pathologist, she understands the curiosity. but she does it to bring victims' justice, to put away predators, to try to make the world a safer place.

over time, i think scully adopts mulder's desire to believe in people. a lot of the series is about scully being radicalized, more and more. to the point of paranoia and immediate distrust of anyone who isn't mulder. but she still goes off with csm in en ami, needing to take the chance he's telling the truth despite knowing he is a liar and responsible for the most reprehensible crimes. she still leans on skinner, doggett, reyes, the lone gunmen. she tries desperately to save cassandra spender. she goes to diana fowley when there's no other option, hoping there's a shred of decency in her, believing the woman really does love mulder. so many moments. the ways mulder changes her, helps her, gives her strength & courage to face her fears. (something about scully killing donnie pfaster feels like a culmination of this — and in the reverse, mulder doesn't kill donnie pfaster. the flip side of scully's lessons?)

kae pointed out to me the reverse here is true too. mulder learns a lesson scully already knew intrinsically. but a post for another night maybe.

all of this, in my mind, deeply intertwined with this post (aka required reading <3)

Flashback

Seven years earlier

New York

"You can not marry him - Elijah is a vampire and you are a witch. And even if the Coven allows it, he is a nobody. Quite unconnected. Oh, so very below your station. You are a Gilbert. Your family line goes back to the beginning of time." Lady Rose Salvatore said to Elena. "Also, you are leaving to the Academy in two days. Florence is waiting for you. The Salvatore Foundation paid for it. It would be very disrespectful to the Foundation if you gave it up."

Elena breathed in deep, and put her book she held in her hand aside and looked outside the window into the night. She knew that this love was impossible.

As she walked to meet him  in the park, an hour later, her heart clenched with pain.

"Elena" Elijah said as he came up to her from the shadows.

"Elijah" Elena gulped, inhaling inwardly, feeling her stomach flip.

Elijah's pleasent and yet nervous posture made her heart clump. And then, there it was. The moment. Her words like dagger, cold, sharp hit him.

"I cannot marry you. I'm sorry"

"Are you ready? The wedding is in half an hour. The carriage is here" Bonnie Bennett said to her dear friend, breaking her thoughts.

"I'm ready" Elena closed her diary and took her hat that was sitting on the  chair.

"I'm happy you accepted Andrea's wedding invitation." Bonnie said as they got  in the carriage.

"I've always wanted to visit France. This was a wonderful excuse." Elena said adjusting her glove.

"You must stay at least a fortnight. Kol and I have plans to go to Cassis. It's a charming small fishing town. We'd love for you to come along with us." Bonnie said.

"I'd love to come. Thank you." Elena smiled appreciatively.

It was good to be with friends again. Seven long years had passed since she has last seen them. She had only exchanged letters with them. And so many things had happened since she had left her home town of Mystic Falls. She had finished her studies, becoming a doctor, opening a small practice with Stefan Salvatore in Florence, Italy.

She had dedicated herself and all her spare time to her patients, and Charity work.

Many have thought that she and Dr Salvatote would form an attachment and marry. But her heart was destroyed. It was of course self-inflicted as she couldn't forgive herself for having so cruely shut Elijah down by refusing him. The sadness in his eyes haunted her to this very day. And it would go for as long as she could hold her breath.

Watching, one of her friends, Andrea Lebonair exchange vows with her beloved Jackson, made her heart flutter achingly for the love lost.

Flashback

Two years ago

Florence, Italy

"I'm in love" Bonnie declared as she sat down on the bench at the Uffizzi  Gallery next to Elena."I think he'll propose."

"What?Who?" Elena looked at her friend astonished. She had no idea her friend had a suitor.

"I'll tell you everything, but not here. Let's go for a walk." Bonnie urged her friend to get up.

"All right." Elena said and followed her friend out of the Gallery.

"His name is Kol. We met in Amsterdam. He is a witch-vampire." Bonnie said un a hush voice.

"Oh my God - how can that be? I mean -a witch and a vampire?"

"He is a hybrid. An abomination, I know. His family is from Norway. His father is the Earl of Rosendal. But that's the least important thing, as they lost the seat, the land and the title. They were persecuted as they were found out that they were hybrids. His father and mother were killed and him and his siblings were scattered around the world. His middle brother has a house in Aix-en-Provence. Klaus Mikaelson."

"Mikaelson," Elena said, remembering seeing the name in her great-uncles diary, "Nobles. Wiccans?"

"Yes. Well, their mother was an Original witch." Bonnie said. "They've been through Hell these past decade. They had to hide. One of their brother had his memory erased. Kol is working on it to restore it."

Elena had heard a little after that, as she had met Kol that the brother who had his memory erased was Elijah - her Elijah.

imo we dont talk enough about how Betty was (indirectly?) s.a'd by Mario (or at least she def felt like that) -a man other than who she thought was her bf knew too much abt her body, her sexual life and her "performance" WITHOUT HER CONSENT. While we know that Armando prob didnt give Calderon the most detailed descriptions of their two times together, Betty def seemed v sickened whenever she saw Calderon after reading the letter, and even dreamed about beating him up after Cartagena. Thoughts?

Betty was not indirectly or directly sexually assaulted by Mario. Her privacy however, was violated. I wanna make that clear, first. She does however feel disgust at what she thought were private moments between two people, were shared with a third party. She very much believes her privacy was violated. (It was). But to have one's privacy violated is not the same thing as your actual person being violated.

Now, the scene you're describing when she says she 'at least it felt like it' is true. She does say\think that. But there's a context to it.

The fantasy happens during her first official meeting as President, when Mario, in a too familiar and bro like manner, touches her shoulder in greeting.

She wants to say, 'don't touch me. don't ever touch me again. Ya tengo suficiente con las caricias sucias de Este (armando) como para seguir soportando las suyas!' and Mario says 'Pero yo no la he tocado!' to which she says, 'Pues yo si siento como si me hubiera tocado! De hecho, lo hizo cuando le entrego nuestra intimidad y usted se delito escribiendole en sus asqueorsas cartas. Siento que me manoseo cuando se recreo describiendo cada cosa que pasaba entre el y yo. No vuelva a tocarme. Me produce nauseas. Me de asco!'

'Manoseo' or to 'Manosear' is to touch\grope someone inappropriately. At least that is the context in which Betty is saying that in. Yes, very much a form of harassment.

This fantasy gives us insight into Betty's mind post Cartagena--that despite forgiving Armando before she left, she still has a lot of anger. She's not seeking revenge anymore but Betty's hurt and anger is still fresh. The way Mario is treating her now, now that she's been made over, now that she's president--is infuriating.

Betty's has two fantasies within Ybslf where she causes Mario physical harm. The first one is after she reads the letter and he gets back fm Palm Beach. She enters the office and he completely ignores her and she dreams of kicking him in the balls. In that fantasy she doesn't say anything, she just kicks him in the balls and smiles. In the fantasy I described above (when she's president), she grabs him by the suit jacket lapels and pushes him onto the table to threaten him. What triggers that fantasy is that he suddenly doesn't ignore her, he acknowledges her and acts like they're all buddies. He shows Betty in that moment that he lacks shame at the part he played in her tragedy.

(note: this is the very thing Armando and Mario fight over when he catches Mario reading Betty's diary--Mario's complete lack of shame.)

Betty believed her (clandestine) relationship with Armando was private because he promised her it would be. He said Mario would never find out. About anything. Betty's anger and disgust towards Mario is not just about her sex life--it's about the entirety of her relationship with Armando that she thought was sacred (and just as special to Armando as to her). The letter that Mario wrote, taints everything she thought about Armando and what she thought about herself.

....'con las caricias sucias de este'...Every caress she accepted from Armando, tainted. Every word, every action that she thought came from Armando with love, tainted.

We, the audience, know how much Armando told Mario and how much he actually kept to himself. This doesn't justify him. Trust was broken from the moment the plan started. But Armando didn't give details about the two nights he and Betty shared. IIRC the letter even says 'You don't tell me things anymore' but it doesn't matter bc it implies that Armando was telling him things before. (And you know, he was).

And that is the horrifying knowledge that Betty has to live with Post Letter.

It is violating to have intimate moments of your life in the mouth of anyone, not just your supposed boyfriend's best friend. But in this case it's worse because it was the one person Armando specifically promised would never find out about their relationship.

Betty's disgust towards Mario is very real. I mentioned above that he shows no shame as he goes on about Ecomoda like everything is fine. (Except for one scene where he's worried about Betty taking things away from him bc of the reduced office space). Armando is the one who feels ashamed and seeks her out to explain. Mario never does anything for anyone that isn't for himself.

His lack of shame, his inability to admit his part in Betty's tragedy to Ecomoda's financial fumbled state (the panama contraband), and how he never once apologizes to Betty; make him an irredeemable character.

Après avoir terminé leur repas, tout le monde déposa leurs plateaux sur le comptoir de la cafétéria. Louis, Harry et Liam emboîtèrent le pas d’Enid, bien décidés à prolonger la journée ensemble.

« Bon, qu’est-ce qu’on fait maintenant ? » demanda Liam, les mains dans les poches, un sourire aux lèvres.

Harry, toujours le plus spontané, tapota doucement l’épaule d’Enid. « Et si on t’invitait à sortir ? C’est vendredi après tout. » Il lui lança un regard malicieux avant d’ajouter : « Tu veux faire un tour en ville, faire un peu de shopping avec nous ? Zayn et Niall vont nous rejoindre. »

Enid hésita, grimaçant légèrement. « Oh… c’est gentil, mais j’avais prévu de rentrer, de m’installer avec un plaid et de me plonger dans The Vampire Diaries. Retrouver Damon Salvatore, tu vois », répondit-elle avec un petit rire.

Liam hocha la tête, soutenant l’idée de Harry. « Ce serait sympa, Enid. C’est une bonne occasion de mieux te connaître, non ? »

Après un instant de réflexion, Enid finit par céder, un sourire éclairant son visage. « Mhh… d’accord. Mais à une condition : si je viens, on parle de The Vampire Diaries. »

Les garçons éclatèrent de rire, ravis qu’Enid accepte leur invitation. Louis, toujours prompt à donner son avis, lança avec enthousiasme : « Personnellement, je suis totalement fou de Katherine Pierce ! Cette fille est juste fascinante. »

« Katherine ? Sérieusement ? » s’étonna Harry en secouant la tête, un sourire amusé aux lèvres. « Tu n’as donc aucun goût, Louis. »

« D’ailleurs, Harry, je ne te permets pas de parler mal de Katherine Pierce », lança Enid avec un sourire malicieux. « Nina Dobrev est tellement incroyable qu’elle me ferait presque douter de ma sexualité ! » ajouta-t-elle en éclatant de rire.

Les garçons restèrent un instant interloqués avant de se joindre à son rire. Louis leva les mains en signe de victoire. « Bien envoyé, Enid ! Je savais que tu avais du goût ! » s’exclama-t-il avec enthousiasme.

Harry croisa les bras, feignant d’être vexé. « D’accord, d’accord. J’avoue que Nina Dobrev est impressionnante. Mais ça ne change rien : Katherine est bien trop manipulatrice pour être une favorite. »

« Oh, mais c’est ce qui la rend fascinante ! » rétorqua Enid, le regard pétillant. « Elle est complexe, imprévisible... une vraie anti-héroïne. »

Une demi-heure plus tard, ils arrivèrent au centre commercial, un lieu animé où les lumières brillantes et la foule donnaient une ambiance électrique. Louis, Harry, Liam et Enid s’arrêtèrent près de l’entrée principale, juste à côté d’un café, en attendant l’arrivée de Zayn et Niall.

« Bon, on parie combien que Niall va encore arriver en retard ? » lança Louis, les bras croisés et un sourire moqueur sur le visage.

Harry rit en secouant la tête. « Je mise sur quinze minutes de retard. Il doit probablement chercher un moyen d’attacher son vélo à la voiture de Zayn. »

Enid esquissa un sourire, amusée par leur complicité. « Vous êtes vraiment terribles avec lui. Peut-être qu’il est juste perfectionniste et qu’il prend son temps, qui sait ? »

« Perfectionniste ? » répéta Liam en riant. « Non, ça, c’est Zayn. Niall, c’est plutôt l’expert du ‘je suis distrait et je perds la notion du temps’. »

Niall et Zayn arrivèrent enfin, Niall sautant presque hors de la voiture de Zayn, son sac en bandoulière et un grand sourire sur le visage. « Désolé pour le retard ! » lança-t-il, légèrement essoufflé. « On a eu une petite galère avec mon vélo, mais tout est réglé maintenant. »

Zayn descendit à son tour, impeccable comme toujours, ses lunettes de soleil encore sur le nez, une aura de calme autour de lui. Mais derrière ce calme apparent, une idée occupait son esprit : séduire Enid. Depuis son arrivée, elle ne quittait pas ses pensées. Il s'était juré de trouver une façon de se démarquer des autres, et il savait déjà par où commencer. Aujourd’hui, il comptait lui offrir quelque chose d’inoubliable, un cadeau qui montrerait son attention et son intérêt.

Cependant, ce que Zayn ignorait encore, c’était qu’il n’était pas le seul à nourrir ce genre de pensées. Alors qu’ils s’engouffraient tous dans les allées lumineuses du centre commercial, il remarqua les regards furtifs que Liam, Louis et Harry lançaient à Enid. Chacun semblait chercher une excuse pour marcher à ses côtés, lui parler ou lui arracher un sourire. Même Niall, habituellement plus réservé, semblait plus attentif qu’à l’accoutumée.

Martha Wells really didn't think anything through for her version of The Imperial Radch. (Aka The Murderbot Diaries)

Ancillaries from The Imperial Radch are all different looking because they literally used to be real people who were kidnapped, murdered, and their brains taken over.

Martha Wells tells us that Constructs (anthroids, but she wanted to be special and make up new terms to confuse everyone) are made from cloned human tissue, but then...it's never brought up that they'd all be exactly identical to eachother because they're all clones from the original source? It's implied that they all look different, even though they also apparently all have the exact same proportions.

If they didn't all look different, then we would have gotten comments from characters about confusing Murderbot for another construct, or thinking it has a twin.

So, we're supposed to casually accept that all constructs are physically unique except for their proportions, which are all exactly the same.

And yes that's already extremely contradictory for no good reason. Gawaine giving away the horse and finding it dead five seconds later, yada yada yada. It's a game of telephone but for writing.

But even if we accept this contradictory statement as true, that each individual construct was cloned from a different source that's...not how capitalism works.

Modern day capitalism doesn't' care about genetic diversity even when it's crucial for species we eat not going extinct.

There's absolutely no way capitalists would suddenly care about preserving "genetic diversity" when it's literally not needed in any way. Constructs don't reproduce. Genetic diversity is not even remotely a consideration.

There is no in-universe justification we’re ever given, and considering Martha Wells’ loathing for doing world building for this series, we’re just never gonna get one.

They all look different because, despite the fact that she’s never bothered to describe it, Murderbot has to be Unique and Special™.

Even though it makes no fucking sense. The point of cloning en masse is that it’s supposed to be cheap and easy and can be done over and over and over again without end.

No capitalist is going to go out of their way to collect so many samples of genetic material to create a supposedly unlimited supply of completely unique anthroids who don’t even reproduce.

It’s a small detail, yes, but it’s just another inconsistancy upon piles of inconsistancies, born out of her insistance that her protagonists must be the most special characters ever to exist, while also trying to mimic better writing that...doesn’t prioritize creating Mary Sues.

She wants the cool vibe of The Imperial Radch, but doesn’t want any of the nuance or actual depth for characters and backstories and worldbuilding.

Murderbot is simultaneously super expensive and worth investing constant repairs in, but also cheap and easy to replace and not worth repairing. And you’re just supposed to believe both of these things at once, and who cares if they’re completely contradictory.

Murderbot is a disposable plastic cup, because Ancillaries are disposable and Martha Wells wants Murderbot to be as cool as them.

Murderbot is expensive and worth investing endless repairs in, because Martha Wells is ableist and lazy and would rather die than write a character who becomes physically disabled over the course of the story, even though Murderbot’s literally based on a character who -- *gasp* -- became physically disabled over the course of her story! Multiple times! And none of them were ever magically healed like they never happened!

Murderbot is made of cloned human material, because that sounds cool and scifi-y, but isn’t actually a direct clone of anyone, or one clone among many, because Martha Wells’ protags have to be the most unique and special and best characters in the setting ever, and she thinks that specializes would be diminished if Murderbot had a few thousand clone-siblings running around.

So we just end up with another completely contradictory set of ideas on top of the rest that we’re already supposed to accept in the series.

The plot of "Hell Screen" centers on the artist Yoshihide. Yoshihide is considered “the greatest painter in the land”, and is often commissioned to create works for the Lord of Horikawa, who also employs Yoshihide's daughter in his mansion, and is rumoured to be taking her as his mistress. When Yoshihide is instructed to create a folding screen depicting the Buddhist hell, he proceeds to inflict tortures upon his apprentices, so he can see what he is trying to paint. Supernatural forces seem to be present; one time, Yoshihide speaks in a devilish voice. Throughout the story Yoshihide seeks to get his daughter back from his employer, but is refused. One night the servant is dragged by the monkey into a room where he finds the daughter recovering from what appears to be an attempted rape. The monkey thanks him for saving her with a servile gesture. She refuses to name her abuser. The story climaxes when Yoshihide asks the lord to burn a beautiful lady in a carriage so he can finish the screen, as he claims he can only paint what he has seen. The lord concedes, but, in a macabre twist, Yoshihide must watch as his daughter Yūzuki and her monkey who rushes to be with her are the ones who burn. The story ends with the magnificently horrible screen completed, and Yoshihide's suicide by hanging. Yoshihide believes he can take control of Hell, or the Desolation, and abuses his apprentices in pursuit of his art, but is instead tortured with the destruction of what he holds dear.

Okay, well, it's mainly only the first section that qualifies, but the descriptions of the torments of Hell certainly qualify.

Andersen, Hans Christian: The Little Matchgirl

The story of a match-seller who lights her own matches to keep warm in the icy cold -- and in her matches sees images of warmth and plenty that she can never attain, that make the cold of winter all the more bitter.

Andersen, Hans Christian: The Steadfast Tin Soldier

This one isn't the most well-known of Andersen's tales, but it is one of the most depressing! The ending where the soldier and the ballerina are cast into the flames and turned to ash and a heart-shaped lump of tin is just tragic.

Basye, Dale E.: Heck

"WHEN MILTON AND Marlo Fauster die in a marshmallow bear explosion, they get sent straight to Heck, an otherworldly reform school. Milton can understand why his kleptomaniac sister is here, but Milton is—or was—a model citizen. Has a mistake been made? Not according to Bea 'Elsa' Bubb, the Principal of Darkness. Fahrenheit 451 tells the story of Guy Montag and his transformation from a book-burning fireman to a book-reading rebel. Montag lives in an oppressive society that attempts to eliminate all sources of complexity, contradiction, and confusion to ensure uncomplicated happiness for all its citizens

The book opens with, "It was a pleasure to burn." The story follows a man whose job is to enforce the mandates of a shallow, fascistic society by burning books.

Bradbury, Ray: Something Wicked This Way Comes

The carnival and its devilish master make promises of youth and freedom, but their only goal is to cause as much pain and suffering as possible.

Butler, Blake: Scorch Atlas

Scorch Atlas is a short story anthology concerning a number of grisly happenings in a world where mold and bugs crawl out of everything, children are parasites, houses spontaneously catch fire, and the sky rains glass, gravel, blood, manure, teeth, ink, glitter, TV static, and light.

But the most Desolation-y part of the book is the central gimmick— this book is meant to be destroyed. Being printed by Featherproof Books necessitates an unconventional design, and Scorch Atlas delivers in pre-blackened pages already marked by the rains of the world. People could order pre-destroyed copies, and there was a contest on who could best destroy their book— axe it, douse it in alcohol, light it on fire, play cricket, drop it in the bathtub, whatever— and the prize, awarded to only one person, is simply another fresh copy.

Castle, E.G.: The One Who Started Fires

The title character, a pyrokinetic young girl, sets hundreds of fires around town, apparently just for the enjoyment of it. The main character nearly burns alive, but the girl apparently was not immune to her own powers and immolated herself first.

Colgan, Jenny T.:  Dark Horizons

Synopsis: "Now, you may or may not have noticed, but we appear to be on fire..."

On a windswept Northern shore, at the very tip of what will one day become Scotland, the islanders believe the worst they have to fear is a Viking attack. Then the burning comes. They cannot run from it. Water will not stop it. It consumes everything in its path — yet the burned still speak.

The Doctor is just looking for a game on the famous Lewis chess set. Instead he encounters a people under attack from a power they cannot possibly understand. They have no weapons, no strategy and no protection against a fire sent to engulf them all.

Add in some marauding Vikings with very bad timing, a kidnapped princess with a secret of her own and a TARDIS that seems to have developed an inexplicable fear of water, and they all have a battle on their hands. The islanders must take on a ruthless alien force in a world without technology; without communications; without tea that isn't made out of bark. Still at least they have the Doctor on their side... Don't they?"

Why it's Desolation: Living fire that kills people to turn them into fire zombies! Illusions of their dead loved ones to lure them into the fire's embrace! PAIN!

Darnielle, John: Universal Harvester

Universal Harvester is perhaps best described as a thriller, a slow-burn manifestation of the Desolation. Jeremy (who has a dead mother) works at the local Video Hut when a customer comes in with the odd complaint, “There’s another movie on this tape.” Watching it later at home, he discovers a short clip on the film of a dark warehouse, with the sound of harsh breathing.

Eventually, after a nasty car crash, the culprit is revealed to be a half-orphan herself, who interviews Jeremy about his own loss.

Universal Harvester is a Desolation-Eye smoothie about the stories we construct out of trauma.

Dickens, Charles: Great Expectations

Mainly this concerns Miss Havisham, who works to build Pip's hopes and confidence enough that when her daughter breaks his heart, the pain will be all the keener. It's also about how Pip, in his rise to fortune, loses the bonds of family and friendship with those closest to him. It's also about the literal very large fire at the end.

Dumas, Alexandre: The Count of Monte Cristo

A man who has been betrayed and imprisoned under false pretenses escapes his prison to take his revenge on those who wronged him, slowly destroying everything they love and everything they are -- but he risks losing himself in the process.

Everything’s going great for Edmond Dantès! He’s getting a big promotion, he’s marrying the woman of his dreams, his whole life is ahead of him.

And then all of that gets ripped away from him in an instant. He is thrown into prison for years, and when he returns, he finds that his enemies who conspired to put him there are thriving.

So, he dedicates himself to getting even. Carefully and methodically, the Count of Monte Cristo goes about destroying the lives of those who took everything from him.

Ellison, Harlan: I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream

For the past 109 years, sadistic supercomputer AM has been torturing the last five humans on Earth in the depths of his complex. It is brilliantly intelligent and wields unimaginable power, but because from its very core it was designed as a tool for war and destruction, it is unable to use its enormous potential for anything constructive. AM is painfully aware of this, and it is an endless source of frustration, self-loathing and hatred towards humans for making him this way; he outright states that his utterly ballistic hatred for all human life is what allowed him to thrive in tormenting the protagonists for over a century, and the only thing he seems to enjoy is torture. All of AM's games are unwinnable by design, either because he's ensured that the scenario is tailored to the player's fatal flaw, or because he's given them almost nothing to work with. It lets them travel for thousands of miles to get to the ice caverns to obtain cans of food because AM keeps them at starvation point and only feeds them disgusting food…and it turns out there really are cans, but nothing to open them with, and the whole thing was just to fuck with them. After Ted kills the other humans, he becomes the sole target of AM’s torture; he is turned into an amorphous creature unable to harm itself, without a mouth, and has his perception of time continuously accelerated and decelerated, with his only hope for escape being when AM finally stops functioning, potentially thousands of years later.

Short story in which, to protest a viral form of domestic violence, a group of women set themselves on fire."

Based on a supposed true story about the titular 13-year-old boy, the son of the admiral, who kept his post at the Battle of the Nile after his ship caught fire and all other survivors had fled. Casabianca died when the ship exploded.

Hill, Joe: The Fireman

A mysterious fungus has begun to infect the world's population, causing a condition popularly known as "Dragonscale." The illness manifests as a pattern of black and gold markings on an afflicted person's skin, eventually causing them to burst into flame and die. There is no known cure, and the fungal spores easily become airborne from the victims' ashes.

Hughes, Langston: A Dream Deferred/Harlem

The speaker is suggesting that this dream is already delayed and frustrated and that time is of the essence—this dream has to be fulfilled or else. The repeated food metaphors suggest that the dream is sustaining, but has diminished after so long waiting.

* I feel that this strongly overlaps with The Lonely, but the home-destroying fire in the climax has me leaning towards The Desolation.

Mary Katherine "Merricat" Blackwood lives with her older sister Constance and their ailing Uncle Julian in a large house on extensive grounds, in isolation from the nearby village. Constance has not left their home in six years, going no farther than her large garden. Uncle Julian, who uses a wheelchair, obsessively writes and re-writes notes for his memoirs, while Constance takes care of him.

Six years prior, Constance and Merricat's parents John and Ellen, their aunt Dorothy, and their younger brother Thomas died after being poisoned with arsenic, which was mixed into the family's sugar bowl and sprinkled onto blackberries at dinner. Julian was also poisoned, but survived; Merricat was not present at the time, as she had been sent to bed without dinner as punishment. Constance, the only person at the table who didn't put sugar on her berries, was arrested and charged with murder, but was acquitted. The people of the village believe that Constance got away with murder, leading them to ostracize the family.

The three remaining Blackwoods have since grown accustomed to their isolation, leading a quiet, happy existence. Merricat is the family's sole contact with the outside world. She walks into the village twice a week and carries home groceries and library books; on these trips, she is faced directly with the hostility of the villagers, and often taunted by groups of children with an accusing rhyme about the poisoned sugar. Merricat is protective of her sister and practices sympathetic magic that maintains borders around the house.

Merricat feels that a dangerous change is approaching, but before she can warn Constance, their estranged cousin Charles appears for a visit and is welcomed into the home. Charles quickly begins to have a close relationship with Constance and gains her confidence. Charles is aware of Merricat's hostility and is increasingly rude to her and impatient of Julian's weaknesses. He makes many references to the money the sisters keep locked in their father's safe, and gradually forms something of an alliance with Constance, encouraging her to leave her home. Merricat perceives Charles as a threat and tries various magical and otherwise disruptive means to drive him from the house. Uncle Julian is increasingly disgusted by Charles and suspects that Charles came there for the Blackwoods' fortune.

One night before dinner, when Constance sends Merricat upstairs to wash her hands, Merricat, in a fit of anger, pushes Charles' smoking pipe into a wastebasket filled with newspapers. This soon causes a massive fire that consumes the family home. The villagers arrive and help put out the fire, but then finally unleash their long-repressed hostility toward the Blackwoods by vandalizing and ransacking the house. Driven outdoors, Merricat and Constance flee into the woods after being threatened by the villagers, while Julian dies of apparent heart failure during the fire and Charles attempts to take the family safe. While Merricat and Constance shelter for the night under a tree that Merricat has made into a hideaway, Constance confesses that she always knew that Merricat was the one who poisoned the family. Merricat readily admits to the deed, saying that she put the poison in the sugar bowl because she knew that Constance would not take sugar.

Upon returning to their ruined home, Constance and Merricat proceed to salvage what is left of their belongings, close off the rooms too damaged to use, and start their lives anew in the little space left to them. The house, now without a roof, resembles a castle "turreted and open to the sky." Constance and Merricat spend much of their time watching the outside world through peepholes hidden by vines that grow to cover the house. The villagers, feeling remorse at their actions, begin to leave food on their doorstep, while developing stories about the house akin to folklore. Charles returns once to try to renew his acquaintance with Constance, but she ignores him. The sisters choose to remain alone and unseen by the rest of the world.

SPOILERS: In this book, the main character uses the powers of Phoenix which are activated by hate( a very Desolation emotion imo) to genocide the enemy nation. Phoenix who grants the Rin and another character (who is fueled by hate in his daily life) is a Desolation entity both capable of great destruction, which he loves, as well as fire-related.

London, Jack: To Build a Fire

This story is a mere 16 pages. It tells the story of a man freezing to death in the Yukon.

(check out Jacob Geller's "Fear of Cold" video essay on it or Google it, the entire story is online) While the Magnus Archives mainly associated the Desolation with fire, the pain and suffering is very appropriate for the Fear of the Cold.

Morrell, David: Orange Is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity

it is a short story about a man who watches his friend destroy his health, relationships and life in an attempt to uncover a secret contained in paintings of Van Dorn, a famous 19th century artist. the search leads him to a small village in france, where he suffers a breakdown and dies from suicide, like all the researchers before him. the protagonist flies to france to help orginise the return of his friend's body to usa, but becomes obsessed with the secret himself. he stays in the village and starts researching Van Dorn's paintings, depleting his savings and postponing his wedding. locals warn him to stop the research, but he ignores them and delves deeper into the mystery. it doesn't end well for him. he uncovers the secret, but becomes affected by terrible migraines, that caused every other researcher to blind themselves and ultimately commit suicide. the only thing that alleviates the pain is painting, and the protagonist intends to use up every sliver of this newfound drive to create art before he meets the fate of every researcher before him.

the paintings at the center of the narrative almost function like a leitner, consuming the victim and driving them to destroy their lives in pursuit of the secret.

Palahniuk, Chuck: Fight Club

The way Tyler acts and is very Desolation in my opinion just fights and destroys stuff. Also, the strong theme of capitalism and capitalism also has ties to Desolation.

Spark, Muriel: The Only Problem

So, in this novel, the main character, Harvey Gotham is a scholar focused on the titular Only Problem which is the problem of suffering. He studies the biblical story of Job to whom terrible needless suffering happened and in the course of the novel, Harvey's own life goes to shit. He becomes a Job-like figure to whom needless and pointless suffering is happening. To me, this sounds like Desolation's work needles suffering and pointless destruction of his peaceful life and people he loves separated from him and all this while he analyses the life of a different man who himself seems like a Desolation victim like a curse which is a Leitner's theme if I saw one.

Takami, Koushun: Battle Royale

Koushun Takami's notorious high-octane thriller is based on an irresistible premise: a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill one another until only one survivor is left standing. Could be seen as Slaughter, but personally I think this pointless destruction of life involved in the plot works for Desolation as well.

Wells, H.G.: The War of the Worlds

earth is attacked by martians, who use highly advanced weapons - heat rays. here is a quote from the book:

"Then it was as if an invisible yet intensely heated finger were drawn through the heather between me and the Martians, and all along a curving line beyond the sand pits the dark ground smoked and crackled". and another one: "[the heat ray is] a generator of intense heat in a chamber of practically absolute non-conductivity. This intense heat they project in a parallel beam against any object they choose, by means of a polished parabolic mirror of unknown composition, much as the parabolic mirror of a lighthouse projects a beam of light."

Normalize disabled Elias.

As much as I stated Elias knows how to handle a gun and maybe mentioned him doing certain physical acts

I am looking through online for a Disability that I believe best suit Elias in canon terms what sticking with modern times, The closest I can find is Multiple Sclerosis and I am still doing research, If you have any ideas please share because I need to know and understand so I can properly write about Elias better

All I can know so far 20% of people with MS have been bedridden [and some are in wheelchairs or use canes, I headcannon Elias as a cane user]. The Common symptoms of MS very from person but the most common ones are fatigue, weakness and poor coordination [which is why I want to say Elias needs pure unbothered focus if trying to aim]

MS also has treatments that atleast controls and eases the symptoms.

The course of his MS, which wasn't diagnosed during his lifetime, is known from the diaries and records he kept from 1822 until shortly before his death.

Yeah, Elias' disability is stated to be MS, which is why it's so insane to me that he's buff!! Because MS often affects muscles, including things like spasms and weakness. I actually made a whole post a couple days ago about some of the MS symptoms I think Elias would have. Feel free to look through that for some ideas if you'd like! And definitely look up resources by and for people with MS, that's always the best place to start when doing disability research. And don't worry too much about being perfectly accurate all the time, just be open to learning more and accepting criticism if it ends up not being well done. It's sometimes hard to remember that it's okay to be wrong, but it really is!! Trying is more important than being too scared to address it at all.
