EMPEROR OF OCEAN PARK (2024): Hugely disappointing 10-part mystery/drama/thriller, adapted by Sherman Payne from Stephen L. Carter's 2002 novel, about the adult children of recently deceased former federal judge Oliver Garland (Forest Whitaker) — aging playboy Addison (Henry Simmons), conspiracy-minded ex-journalist Mariah (Tiffany Mack), and nebbish law professor Talcott (Grantham Coleman) — discovering a sinister conspiracy related to their father's friendship with one-time CIA stringer and mercenary Jack Ziegler (Torrey Hanson), who thinks Talcott can lead him to something known only as "the arrangements," and who may have had something to do with both the strange end of their father's judicial career and the elder Garland's death.
Initially quite intriguing, EMPEROR is well-acted and richly detailed; the characters' complicated feelings about their father (whom they still reflexively call "the judge") are well-drawn, as is Oliver Garland's descent from respectable if intransigent conservative judge to hotheaded Fox News crank. However, the show ultimately can't overcome its many flaws: It goes on for at least two episodes too long, the narrative wanders way more than it should, the ambivalent ending is borderline cowardly, and there's a certain sheepishness to its periodic segues into violent thriller territory that doesn't help the credibility of the plot's more far-fetched aspects. Moreover, the flashbacks with the elder Garland eventually overshadow the present-day story (and the weak-willed Talcott) so thoroughly as to make it unclear who the protagonist is supposed to be.
I also wasn't wild about the way the show tries to offload responsibility for Garland's mistakes onto his late wife (Ora Jones), or how the story positions Talcott's estranged wife (Paulina Lule) as an antagonist he must overcome in order to reclaim his manhood; it seems that even in a Black-written and -directed project, Black women just can't catch a fucking break lately. CONTAINS LESBIANS? Talcott's white work sidekick Dana (Kelli Simpkins) is a cute middle-aged Academic Butch, but her role is small. VERDICT: Worth a look, not least for Whitaker's outstanding performance, but the clumsily structured, muddled plot and weak ending are just not satisfying despite some strong moments along the way. A real letdown.

My redneck neighbor Doug's predictions for The Bad Batch: Season 3
Well, the poll's in, kids: looks like we're getting a whole bunch of Doug-isms for the next while!
I did take a request from @amalthiaph, because heck, it made me wonder, too!
I texted Doug while I was waiting at the airport. Sure enough, Winter Storm Doug arrived with a whole bunch of texts on the finale season of Daddy Warcrimes 'n Friends.
Here's what Doug thinks will happen in Season 3 of The Bad Batch:
Daddy Warcrimes will learn what happened to Ryan-from-Accounting and spend a whole episode sobbing about it.
Ryan-from-Accounting comes back as Space Gandalf. Don’t know what Space Gandalf will be, but it’ll be him.
Stepsister Beth and Little Orphan Blondie will team up and save everyone in Jimmy-the-Scientist's lava lamps.
We will find out what’s in the lava lamps.
Toaster Strudel, Daddy Rambo, and Julio will find Damn-It-Jared* and take turns beating him with a tire iron they found in the trunk of the HMS Search Warrant.
Houma-BBQ-Bitch will be killed by either Daddy Rambo or The Sons of Robocop**. Maybe Little Orphan Blondie, who knows.
The freaky aliens running the mall on the ocean will attempt to rise up. They’ll get shot.
Jimmy-the-Scientist will accidentally quote that robot cowboy show on HBO.
Church Lady will use voodoo magic to resurrect her boyfriend, Sassy Park Ranger.
Nevermind. Church Lady will run into Ryan-from-Accounting-Who-Is-Now-Space-Gandalf and it’ll be written as sweet but it’ll come across as awkward.
There will be mech suits. Maybe not, but I want mech suits, damn it!
Princess Leia’s dad will show up with the Sonic Special.
Sonic Special will get zapped by the Emperor.
The Emperor will show up and giggle. Why, hell if I know.
Darth Vader shows up and mopes around before killing a bunch of people.
The Sons of Robocop will start to be evil, but then be good, but then do evil things for good reasons. Daddy Warcrimes will follow suit.
*= Damn-It-Jared is Saw Guerrera. “We had this shitty new engineer that cost us half a million in bungled supplies and kept grabbing the CEO's executive assistant even when she told him to eff off. He was such a pain in the ass and this dope looks and talks just like him. Every time we saw his face we’d all say ‘DAMN IT, JARED!’ and that’s his name."

Hi~ Can I request child!reader with record of ragnarok anime, who have to write an essay about their family members? And how will they react to reading what the reader thought about them?
-For Family Day at school, everyone in your class had to write an essay about their family members and present them in front of everyone.
-You had 21 family members, all of them adopting you as their own. Everyone knew this, from teachers to other parents and your classmates, that you had so many family members to love you.
-Since you had so many, you were asked to go last, which you had no problem doing.
-You were nervous, walking out on stage in front of everyone, but you saw your family and you know that with them there, you were safe as you began, “My family is very big- I have a lot of papas and two mamas, and lots of big brothers-”
-Lu Bu- “Papa Lu Bu is what Papa Loki calls a scary dog, because he looks scary, but he’s not, he’s very nice and always carries me on his shoulders and tells me lots of stories!” Lu Bu sent a glare to Loki who just grinned, but he felt warm at your kind words.
-Thor- “Papa Thor is super tall and really strong, he’s the best at getting the cookie jar off the fridge!” everyone looked at Thor who froze as you unintentionally threw him under the bus.
-Adam- “Papa Adam is the best papa in the world! He tells me stories, takes me on long walks, and teaches me a lot about gardening!” Adam sent a smug grin to the others who glared lightly at him, as they did know that he was the most doting of the men.
-Zeus- “Grampy Zeus is super funny! He likes to make the others mad because he thinks its fun, he likes to dance!” there was no denying that Zeus was a gremlin as he laughed almost bashfully.
-Kojiro- “Papa Kojiro is teaching me kendo! It’s hard but it’s also a lot of fun! He also tells he best stories from when he was in Japan!” Kojiro beamed brightly at your praise, he had been teaching you the basics of kendo and he always loved telling you stories.
-Poseidon- “Papa Poseidon teaches me all about the ocean and he reads really hard books to me, even if I don’t understand it sometimes, but it makes him happy, I’ve seen him smile loads when we read together!” Poseidon flushed red at your praise, trying to ignore the grins from the others.
-Jack- “Papa Jack is super fancy! He reads Shakespeare to me and teaches me about different types of tea, and we always have tea parties together!” Jack felt like he had a feather in his cap, beaming at your praise that he was fancy.
-Hercules- “Big Brother Hercules is super strong! He can lift a car over his head! But he’s always gentle with me and we have slumber parties all the time!” Hercules smiled a bit bashfully but couldn’t help but beam.
-Raiden- “Papa Raiden is a rikishi- that’s a sumo wrestler, and he’s the best! He’s super strong and eats a lot of food! But he always shares with me.” Your words made Raiden clutch his chest in fondness over you.
-Shiva- “Papa Shiva has a big family himself, with three wives and big brother Ganesha too! He always makes up the most fun games to play and is really good at hide and seek!” Shiva smiled up at you, beaming at your kind words.
-Buddha- “Big Brother Buddha always shares his candy with me! He has so many and is super smart when it comes to snacks! He always knows the best ones to have!” Buddha chuckled warmly, enjoying his lollipop.
-Huang- “Big Brother Qin Shi Huang was the Emperor of China!! He lives with us now, but he always tells me stories and we always go on fun adventures to the park!” He beamed proudly, looking smug that you mentioned his title, but he was happy to hear how happy he made you.
-Hades- “Papa Hades has a super big doggy named Cerberus that I get to pet! And Hades always takes me on long walks and tells me stories of when Poseidon and Zeus were kids!” the two turned to their eldest brother who smirked at them, making them panic that he told you embarrassing stories about them!
-Tesla- “Big Brother Nikola is super smart! He’s always making inventions, some blow up but others don’t and are super neat to see! He helps me with my homework all the time!” Tesla beamed brightly at you, not at all embarrassed by you announcing his failures, as failing is the first step in learning.
-Beelzebub- “Big Brother Beelzebub reads a lot, and he reads to me too. We sometimes will pick a topic and then hunt around for information about it- like a treasure hunt!” He chuckled softly, fondness in his eyes as he thought about your ‘treasure hunts.’
-Odin- “Papa Odin is super smart! He tells me all sorts of stories and he teaches me lots of stuff too! He’s super tall too and can be scary, but he’s always nice to me!” Odin smiled gently at your praise, as he enjoys telling you stories.
-Hermes- “Big Brother Hermes knows how to play the violin! He’s super good at it and always plays the prettiest music! We have super fancy tea parties together!” Hermes chuckled warmly, his hand coming to his heart as he welcomed your praise with grace.
-Ares- “Papa Ares is super tall and strong, but he’s gentle with me, he sometimes cries a lot, but he gives the best hugs in the whole world!” A light from above shown down upon him as he fell to his knees, crying at your praise while the others all rolled their eyes at him.
-Loki- “Papa Loki is super fun! He takes me flying and always plays pranks on the others, which gets him yelled at a lot, but some of his pranks are funny!” to hear from you that his pranks were funny, he felt like he was on top of the world, beaming from ear to ear.
-Eve- “Mama Eve is the best mama, she braids my hair, kisses my boo-boos, and reads me stories, she’s always super nice and teaches me a lot of new things.” Eve beamed, cupping her cheeks as she cooed at your words.
-Brunnhilde- “Mama Brunnhilde is the boss of the house, no matter what Grampy Zeus says! She teaches me a lot of important lessons, like cleaning up after myself! She yells at those who don’t but she never yells at me!” She smiled fondly at you before sending a smirk to Zeus who was beside himself with rage.
-The audience clapped for you, hearing about your wide range of family members, with your family cheering the loudest, which made you beam brightly at them before you headed over to them, getting immediately grabbed up in a swarm of hugs and cuddles.

HIIIIII bestie Robin, are you ready?? After harvesting my Youtube subscription and liked video lists here is what I have compiled. I'm gonna put my current top 5 video recommendations and then the rest of the list, under the cut, is organized by creator.
Why Are There So Many Confederate Vampires
The art of religious interpretation (midnight mass vs god’s not dead)
Defunctland: Walt Disney's City of the Future, E.P.C.O.T.
Hogwarts Legacy, JK Rowling, and Trans Advocacy
Cultural Inspirations in Avatar: The Last Airbender Book 1 - Water

Goncharov (1973) video essay
The art of religious interpretation (midnight mass vs god’s not dead)
Xiran Jay Zhao - Author of one of my FAVE YA novels, “Iron Widow” (which is a MUST read). I always want more avatar content that focuses on cultural inspirations from trusted sources. Xiran taught me so much about the avatar universe I already loved as well as valuable critiques. They also do retellings of historical events such as- Bisexual Han Dynasty Emperors and Forgotten Warrior Queen - Fu Hao.
Cultural Inspirations in Avatar: The Last Airbender Book 1 - Water
Cultural Inspirations in Avatar: The Last Airbender Book 2 - Earth
Cultural Inspirations in Avatar: The Last Airbender Book 3 - Fire
Fundie Fridays - Jen, a leftist queer feminist, and her husband James examine different aspects of Christian fundamentalism, American conservative politics and pop culture. Vacation Bible School of Rock (3 part video series History of Contemporary Christian Music)
Ken Ham’s Creation Museum & Ark Encounter
Ask a Mortician - Caitlin Doughty!!! The adult Wednesday Addams we should have got. So compassionate, informed, and moving!! I love her work and she has taught me so much about what it means to have a relationship with death and grief. Her work deals with heavy topics and you can tell she does this work from a deeply respectful, informed place.
The Lake That Never Gives Up Her Dead
Let’s Visit the Churches Made of Human Skulls
Why are Black and White Funeral Homes STILL Separate? With Dr. Kami Fletcher
Iconic Corpse Series
Princess Weekes - Nuanced video essays on pop culture, race, feminism, and other social issues. Takes time to break down complex concepts, their origins and material consequences. The essay on confederate vampires and the connection later made to sci-fi media like Firefly were so paradigm shifting to me!

The Magical Negroes of Stephen King

Telling the Bees
[800ish words of hurty Huntlow drabble feat. Clover, set early in For the Future]
Hunter notices Willow the moment she opens the Owl House’s Hooty-less door. He keeps pacing, fists curled around an empty space saved for a staff that can’t fill it.
From far away, his eyebrows iron his expression into a scowl. Only when Willow gets close can she see his eyes are puffy and red around the edges. But this she could guess; his shoulders had been hitching between steps.
“Hi, Hunter, um, can I borrow Clover from you for a second?”
He looks insulted, interrupted, irate. “You can do whatever you want. I don't care! She’s your palisman. Borrow her for a second. Borrow her forever!”
Willow knows he’s hurting. She knows not to take it personally, even though it hurts her in return. She has her mission, which gives her an excuse to not try to comfort him. She gingerly scoops her palisman into her arms. Hunter’s gaze is on her like a sunburn, the seep of seething envy and misplaced anger, slow but inevitable as a lava flow.
“I’ll only be a second, promise.” She breathes out, counting in her head, except that reminds her of her dads, and that reminds her she hasn’t seen them in how many months? Not since before the sky was strangely pink and purple and star-spangled. And that’s nothing but unbearable.
She grits her teeth. Emptiness. She thinks of emptiness. It’s fitting for what she has to do.
“Ahem. Clover Daffodil Mellifera Milk-Baker Park,” she says with soft precision. Every name counts.
Clover sets back her wings and blinks innocently.
“No, You’re not in trouble. You have been a kind, loyal, and loving palisman.” Willow kisses between her bulging eyes. “This is about something else.” Willow glances at Hunter, who has returned to his fuming, further flattening the red grass into the dirt with each back and forth.
“Clover, I think you already know,” Willow’s words get sticky and her tongue gets thick, “Flapjack isn’t coming around to play anymore. But I need to tell you— officially tell you— that Flapjack is gone. And that Hunter was too, for several heartbeats that didn’t happen. Do you hear me?”
Clover nods, confused.
“So I don’t know what you need to do now, but I did what I’m supposed to.”
Hunter has stopped walking. He grips his wrist tight, as if his hand plots against him.
“Why would you do that, right in front of me? When you know—” He can’t finish the thought. He doesn’t need to. His whole body completes the sentence. When you know that I am raw from becoming this so recently. And underneath that, so deep he hasn’t excavated it yet, is Why would you hurt me?
Willow wants to scream at him. She wants to let her powers grow wild. It would feel awful. It would feel so good. She knows it would be for nothing. It would only hurt him even more. So she swallows it all and tenses her stomach.
“Because,” her voice is measured, with all the strain of a seawall holding back the ocean. “Of all the things in the Owl House for the Emperor’s Coven to leave behind, guess what? Luz found this stupid book from Eda’s most recent pile of trash that says if you don’t tell bees when someone close to you dies, the bees will die too.”
She blinks at Hunter, her breathing as shallow as his. He blinks back.
She remembers how she cornered him into silence when they first met. He had been stubborn and wrong about her then, just as he is now.
“And I don’t even know if that’s true, but I’m not taking that risk, because what kind of captain would I be if I let us lose anyone else?”
This is when she would hold him close in a back-cracking hug if it weren’t for the barbs and shards they had just scattered between themselves.
“Here.” She can hardly look at him. There’s too much happening on his face that neither of them want to see. “Clover can keep you company again.”
Clover buzzes as she changes hands, adding to the static as Willow and Hunter’s fingers almost brush.
It sounds like Hunter mumbles “I’m sorry,” but Willow might have imagined it. It’s too fantastic, too in line with what she wants to hear from him right now.
The bee has been told. Willow focuses her thoughts on other things. Camila and Gus are waiting for her to finish telling that story about her abominations homework. She goes back inside before Hunter can say anything else to break her heart.
—
I saw the phrase “telling the bees” and was like, I know a bee! Thanks @paopujuice for reading first! I mostly have drabbles in me nowadays but glad they still work.
Not pictured: Luz cracking open the beat-up copy of “Apiculture for the Befuddled” (now with CD-ROM!) and going “omigosh omititan, WILLOW!” as Amity is very confused.
Also not pictured: Willow throwing the same furiously orange book at Hunter’s cosplay-booted feet. (Just his luck, it opens to the page about common birds that are apivorous, such as house demons and cardinals.)

The EMPEROR OF OCEAN PARK show with Forest Whitaker is interesting enough that I'm going to be mad if it doesn't stick the landing.
LADY IN THE LAKE has some interesting pieces, but the story is hit and miss so far, I'm not loving the THE LOVELY BONES framing narration device, and the Black characters are more interesting than the Natalie Portman character or her awful husband and son, so I dunno.
SUNNY is so determined to be abrasive and insufferable that I don't think I care how it comes out. This is the thing: A story's protagonist doesn't have to be sympathetic or likable, but if they're not, you have to provide *SOMETHING* to make it worth watching. SUNNY is just not doing that at all, and the Rashida Jones character is just awful.
#hateration holleration#teevee#emperor of ocean park#lady in the lake#sunny#natalie portman#forest whitaker#rashida jones#i have not read any of the novels on which these shows are based#and i'm avoiding reading anything about emperor of ocean park#so as not to have it spoiled one way or another

ive been thinking of empires smp instead of south park for once and it made me realise something
this is season 1 btw. if we arent basing the empires off the facts that the current rulers built them and instead the current emperors are heirs, then what does that make lizzie and possibly even jimmy? i find it funny with thinking how lizzie just casually moved into the ocean and everyone just accepted it. like okay girl you can live on the ocean, no ones going to be there so we guess you can stay.
dunno about jimmy though, i feel like he might have been raised in the cod empire?? like wouldnt be exactly a heir or anything, but he was still was allowed to rule since there mightve been no heir and he was closest to a cod that the empire had??
i know none of this is canon, but i like to make the empires realistic in some sense
#empires smp#empires s1#the ocean empire#the cod empire#jimmy solidarity#ldshadowlady#i actually CANT stop thinking about empires#if anyone wants i Will send a long ass list of headcanons#they are gathering

Can you tell us more abt your ocs? What's the general lore? :O (I really love the designs and their shapes hahgzhchsvbd your art is amazing ❤️🐟)
ooh there is a lot of stuff i won't give any context to....
there actually are several concept of these guys i have
some of the more anthro guys are actually mascots for an ocean themed theme park (the ones with propper references, beluga cutout and punk dolphin)
other anthros are actual living being and everything else is too much to unpack
the crustacean lil fellas with almost no human features all have verb based names and that's all i'm gonna tell for now
the pawed sharks are also separated and are just like cartoon thingys for now
the goldfish are a family with the orange fish trying to take care of his dad who got dementia
the blue lobster was meant to be a character for vk stickers (they didn't accept him)
the orca with a basketball was designed as a mascot for my school's sports club (he didn't pass the contest)
the emperor shrimp and sea bunny are kinda separated from the other anthros and mostly go as just some funny fellas to laugh at
giving this tiny old animation test as a bonus for the pirate skeleton dude and the yellow thing is his underwater drone companion and there is a lot to unpack here

Legjobb koncertek 2023
Namármost. Idén ez lesz az egyetlen listám, ugyanis márciusban történt két dolog, ami meghatározta zeneileg az évemet, és nem álltam fel belőle. Egyrészt a Panda Bear & Sonic Boom koncert a Magyar Zene Házában eszméletlenül beütött, utána beszélgettem 10 percet Noah-val, ami szintén baromi jó volt. Imádom a lemezt, de élőben sokkal-sokkal jobb volt az egész, eszméletlenül örülök, hogy ilyen előadókra is ki lehet menni Budapesten koncertre (felkészül: Godspeed You! Black Emperor). Másrészt elkezdtem hallgatni Andrew Hickey: History of Rock Music in 500 Songs podcastjét, ami a Reset-hez hasonlóan az 50-es évektől indul.
50 - Sampa the Great @ Pohoda
49 - The Saxophones @ Porgy & Bess
48 - Carson Coma 2 @ Budapest Park
47 - Sainko Namtchylak @ Magyar Zene Háza
